Last year we cruised the Mediterranean on the MSC Opera- this time we chose the Costa neoRiviera. The ships are similar, although the MSC Opera was lengthened a few years ago. The Costa neoRiviera is leaving the fleet in November and will be transferred to their German division, AIDA Cruises, so this review won’t be relevant for much longer. The good points: it was a very affordable cruise in peak season for 11 nights. One of our party was travelling as a single passenger and Costa’s policy (in certain markets) is to only levy a 30% surcharge- this is another reason we chose this trip. Atmosphere: Costa neoRiviera is a smaller intimate ship and is easy to navigate- the only trick to remember was the middle elevators didn’t go past deck 9. The crew were fine and we encountered no constant upselling like on MSC. The only disappointments were a confusing 30 minute life boat drill and crew not always enforcing the pool age restrictions, although considering this voyage was mid August this was often an impossible task. Most of the passengers were Italian, the remainder French, German or Spanish. There were perhaps 20 native English speakers on board so if you were looking to expand your Anglo social circle, this wasn’t the ship for you- English speaking guests are targeted by sister company HAL. Since Costa and MSC are mass market cruise lines, the demographics of your fellow passengers come from a wide social spectrum; therefore, standard Anglo behavioural norms/etiquette are often lacking. Being in the minority, the only solution is to modify your own behaviour: “when in Rome…” Dining/Food: Hurray! After last year’s MSC disgusting culinary experience (straight from the microwave to your plate) and rude Maitre D’ attitude, it was great being on a ship where you could actually eat well and alter dining arrangements without any fuss. Except for one night featuring a brand new celebrity chef menu (resulting in many half consumed meals) which the dining staff observed, the quality and portions were very good in the main dining room and buffets. Cleanliness: The ship was clean (not MSC obsessive compulsive clean) and satisfactory although some open deck areas on level 12 required attention. As the ship is being refurbished soon, perhaps it was decided to wait until then to perform the necessary work. Having said that, there were sufficient deck chairs on board (an MSC Opera problem) and the ship never felt crowded. Entertainment: This is the only area that needs improvement compared to MSC which was exceptional. While the special guest acts were quite entertaining, if the night involved the neoRiviera singers the performances were too repetitive- I think we saw the same prancing/dancing moves a number of times- just in different costumes. There is also a design flaw in the Ravello theatre- rows are tiered, but there are two rows in every tier so the second row can’t see over the first so you need to arrive early to get a seat with a view. Overall verdict: yes we would cruise with Costa again. Our expectations were met and the overall experience far surpassed MSC. Read Less

We have chosen this cruise like most people because of the itinerary. 11 NIGHTS WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN - an amazing itinerary. We sailed on 11 July from Savona. Reading reviews I knew the cruise line is not perfect and did not expect much, but what we have experienced was so much worth! Starting from the drill - which took at least an hour or more. English speaking people were wondering around the decks asking where to go. Eventually we were put on one of the outside areas under the sun (no seating and no sun protection) where we had to stay for at least 30 mins prior the briefing which we cant hear due to noise. By that time older people were not able to stand longer and some were shouting at the staff who were saying that it was not their problem - go and talk to the management. That was a big waring flag of what would follow. - No good service (except our stuart) - Poor quality towels and bed sheets, poor quality of linen at the restaurant . - Food of low quality and variety - what was not eaten on breakfast was used for lunch and then for dinner. - I had twice food poisoning from the dinners' dishes - Horrible service during dinners, when we had to wait for one hour to be served. - Only 2 properly trained and knowledgeable staff at the excursion desk, the rest could not do the job and were asking them to book or change tours and it took really long time to rebook excursions which were cancelled. I can continue, but really don't want to as it makes me so upset. The reason of all that - poor management on this ship. I would never step again on any of the Costa ships or recommend this cruise line. Read Less

We were not sure what to expect as this was our 14th cruise but first with Costa. Previous cruises were with Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Holland America and Norwegian. We selected this cruise because of the itinerary and ports of call. I had read previous reports and fortunately did not base our decision on these reviews. The cabins were spacious (for a cruise ship) and spotlessly clean. We had the option of having the room made up once or twice a day and selected twice a day. Previous reports talked about the rudeness of other passengers and the pushing and shoving. We never experienced any of this. We did not encounter any other English passengers but all the crew spoke English. If you are English speaking and you are looking to socialize with other guests, this will not be the cruise for you. The crew were AMAZING! They went out of their way to help make our experience memorable. We ate in the dining room 4 out of the 7 nights. There was pasta on the menu each night, so even if we didn't like the featured choices, we could always get a good plate of spaghetti! Because of the late departure on 2 of the nights, we ate ashore. The entertainment was varied and there were multiple dancing venues. I can highly recommend the NeoRiviera. Read Less

We recently went on our first and last Costa Cruise, everything was good, until the evening before disembarking, they had added 15% to a prepaid drinks package, we bought the 20 beers and 20 soft drinks packages on board as we were told we couldn't buy it before boarding the ship but there wouldn't be any added costs because it was a package. Then we were told we would have to get off the ship at 8a.m on Friday morning for our transfer to Nice from Savona, our transfer was arranged for 10.30 a.m through Costa and the Cruise Company we booked with. There were at least 100 passengers this happened to, most of them booking through the same company as ourselves, amongst the passengers were disabled people, myself and my husband included. it seemed to be the British passengers this was happening to, or at the very least, people flying into the UK. This earlier transfer meant that many of us would have a 12 hour wait at Nice Airport. The Captain put it a short appearance and then disappeared, the Reception staff didn't really want to know what was going on, and weren't very helpful anyway, then when some passengers started to get really angry, they offered them an extra hour before they caught their transfer but would have to wait on the quayside. We found it all totally unacceptable as this had been known to the staff onboard at least two days earlier but passengers had not been informed. I can't understand why people with an evening flight were put off the ship first and others with an earlier afternoon flight were allowed to stay onboard longer, this, to me seems ridiculous, also, one of the ports we should have stopped at, Tunis had understandably been cancelled so they took us to Sicily which was closed because of a Bank Holiday, when questioned about this we were told "You can go on one of our trips which is will cost you €50-€69." This was not ideal, I don't know why we were taken somewhere where there was very little to do, it all seemed to be about making extra money. I have told all my friends about this, many of whom cruise a couple of times a year and none of them will sail with Costa. The staff and food were lovely though, this was the only good thing. We cruise a couple of times a year, but will definitely not cruise with Costa again Read Less

My wife and I sailed on the Costa NeoRiviera on November From Savona to Dubai. We flew from NY to Istambul and spent three glorious days before heading to Genoa to embark on our cruise. We arrived in Genoa went to the Best Western City Hotel checked in an took a taxi to Portofino for the afetrnnon.. Next day took a taxi to Savona for $120.00 Euros. Savona cruise terminal is about half hour from Genoa and check in was very quick. NeoRiviera is a new concept from Costa, longer stays on ports, better food, more intimate and oprn seating. This was our first Costa's cruise after more than 80 cruises taken on Celebrity, RCCL, Carnival, Princess, NCL, Cunard, Holland and Renaissance. Since this was a repositioning cruise the concept was not applicable, only the food was much better than other Costa cruise according to other Costa's passenger we asked. Food on the MDR is eatable but not much selection, food on the buffet is good but also limited, the pizza is bad. Costa will nickle and dime on everything, pizza is free from noon to 3 pm and small fee there after. Coffee and water is only available during dining hours, water and coffee in MDR is not free. Room service very limited and small fee is charge, in cabin breakfast is also very limited and also small fee is apply. We usually have breakfast in our cabin but only had it twice on this cruise. The itinerary was the best part of this cruise, we stopped in Rome we took Rome on your own since we been to Rome before, visited Reggio Calabria took a cruise tour and enjoyed it very much. Heraklion was a short stop, took an independent tour and visited Knossos Palace and had lunch in the city. Cruise line had to cancel visit to Haifa Israel due to security concerns, everybody was very dissapointed, stop in Port Said to visit Cairo was also cancelled for same reason, but we stopped Eillat, Israel and took a cruiseship tour to Masada and the Dead Sea. Luxor was a long ride from Port but we liked it. One of the highlights was Petra in Jordan, was everything we expected and more, amazing to see it in person, awesome. We stopped in three Oman' s ports and not much to see. Abu Dhabi was added to compensate for cancelled ports and we took and independent tour, visited the city and went to the Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque, very beautiful and interesting. Finally we got to Dubai, what a great city we arranged with Great Adventure Tours to pick us up for a city tour, a Desert Safari tour and we loved it. Dubai is a most city to visit, we stayed three extra days and had the time of our lives.. Costa's NeoRiviera had some good things but failed on many others, the shore excurtions desk was baddly run, we found out our excursion was cancelled night before and no one cared to let us know. Entertainment was mediocre at best and cruise director had to apoligized due to a noshow from a local act, the theater was packed with passengers. We know Costa is an Italian cruise line and is a little different than other cruise lines, we did not like it and we are more than sure if we have a choice we will not cruise with them again. The ship looks good and is very well kept, nice and clean. Cabin are on the small side.   Read Less

Just go back from a 12 night western med cruise on the NeoRviera. The ship is older (1999) but recently re-furbished. Great ship . . .had one of the best cabins in over 70 cruises on 8 different cruise lines. We had one if the few "mini-suites" . . .a balcony cabin with a walk in closet and both tub and shower! The Costa "slow cruise" concept has overnights and very late port departures . . . easing the pressure to "get back in time". The staff is typical Costa . . . attentive and efficient. The odd stuff? Well, imagine a dining room that serves 6 course meals but does not serve coffee (you can't beg or buy it). Bottled water in included, but coffee is not and nowhere to be found (except in coffee bars). Or how about a 6 course well done dinner menu with only one meat entre? Good and interesting options at every other course . . . but one meat main course. The odd thing US travelers need to really understand is that Costa will cancel scheduled tours if they don't get enough people for a language . . . or out you on a multi-language bus which MIGHT include your mother tongue. We gave up on ship tours a long time ago but this drives people nuts. Net-net? If you want a somewhat upscale and very Italian experience, go Costa. But remember it will be Italian and it will be a bit more formal and structured.   Read Less

Neo Rivera , A nice old ship, nothing flash mind you and in need of a tidy up in some areas, like the bathroom in our cabin 9039 floor area showing signs of age, still it was as I said nice but like any cruise you can always pick something, so lets have a look at the good points: Great meals , everything was well cooked and presented and not too repetitious. Nice staff, friendly and keen to help, although at times a hint of abruptness Good selection of ports Good arrival and departure times Good embarkation and disembarking procedures . Not so good: Expensive Cruise compared to others I have been on. I had an outside Premium cabin and I am still trying to work out the benefit of spending the extra money on this level of cabin, there was nothing to suggest I received anything more than the people in the standard outside cabin, and we certainly weren't told of anything. I would not waist my money on the EP category cabin. Difficult to get drinking water, could only find one dispenser and that was in the dining room and that closed when meal time finished. No water jug in Cabin Lack of decent information on visiting port, ie how to get into the city, distance etc.A map of the area around the port would have been helpful. Lack of English TV stations Pushy with alcohol / coffee purchases Expensive shore excursions Pathetic entertainment , amateurish an repetitive , best was the presentation by the staff. Would I cruise with Costa again, not sure about that , it may be better on one of their bigger ships but I an not going to spend money to find out Read Less

The ship is very clean, but nothing special decco wise, excellent staff, good stops in the main, artists in the lounges good, shows mixed but not bad. that ends the good points. Bad points are - no port info, at Livorno, no info regarding shuttle to the centre, on disembarking we found there was no shuttle, when enquiring on the dock we were met with a shrug. FOOD this is our worst experience in 19 cruises, indeed poorer than school dinners 50 years ago, evening meal in the dinning room consisted of 4 starters - 1 salad either 2 soups and 1 appetizer or 1 soup and 2 appetizers, 2 pasta's, main courses 1 meat, 1 fish and 1 veg dish, cheese and a choice of sweets, including ice cream which is the only time and place ice cream is available, all other cruises we have been on have also included a selection of dishes available every day !, on day 3 the fish course was sea bream which had the head and tail on, and not filleted which i didn't fancy so i asked if anything else was available, and was told beef, which wasn't recommended, thin and tough, or chicken, i picked chicken which was thin and tough, it was what is served at the hot dog station, came with french fries, no garnish, no tomatoe, no veg of any sort. Next night was Captains night, dress elegant. Evening meal 2 soups 1 of which was meat balls, 1 appetizer, Morrocan meat balls, meat course consisted of a dessert spoon of mashed potatoes 2 pork meat balls and tomatoe jus. Next evening mains consisted of i salmon which i'd had at lunch or lamb on white rice, the lamb was 6 small pieces on top of a mound of white rice, no jus, 1 st piece o k, 2 piece i took out of my mouth just gristle, 3 rd piece i managed to cut the gristle off, 4 th piece unable to cut, 5 th piece o k, 6 piece managed to cute the fat off. After this we decided to eat in the self service, something we had never done in previous cruises, Eat there a couple of times, and then found a menu started to appear outside the dinning room. One evening had rabbit on the menu, decided to try the dining room, expecting saddle of rabbit, or dear i small piece of potatoe, 3 rabbit bones, 1 st bone found approx 1 tea spoon of meat, 2 nd bone some vertebra with skin, no meat, 3 rd bone salvaged about a dessert spoon of meat, i can not ever remember a worst meal. We had a A I package, didn't really have any info what was on it, but on 2 nd night in the theatre i asked for a Gin and tonic ( Bombay ), which i was given, after the show we went into one of the lounges asked for the same, and was told it wasn't available on the all inclusive, i said but iv'e just had it, she said your card will not except it, check your card !, when your receipt arrives you can not see the price, just a place for your signature, your card is returned to you with you copy folded around the card with the price out of site, on checking i found i had been charged 9.8 euro's for the Bombay Gin & tonic. It was suggested i go to reception, which i did they said nothing they could do go to the theatre, i replied will there be anyone their - yes, no one at the theatre, but along comes the cruise director with another guy, explained the position, and was told he was the cruise director and didn't deal with bar issues but the bill was correct, accompanied by his finger waging in my face, i waged my finger back, and was told don't wag your finger at me !, i am the cruise director, at this the other guy asked him to step away while he called the bar manager , bar manager arrived, called the waiter, who said i asked for Bombay Gin ,which i had but i thought i should have been told it was not on the package, i was quite happy to pay the difference, but not the full wack, the whole time this cruise director trying to have his say, whilst waving his arms about, i just had to tell him to keep 2 yards away. Will i go back with Costa NO, Neo ships or any other Costa ships. By the way it is nothing to do with Italian Cruise lines, we already booked our 4th cruise with MSC, sailing in August 2014. hoppy5   Read Less
