4* Mariner. Did annual TA on Nieuw Amsterdam. Ship was to have come out of dry dock. We embarked in Fort Lauderdale and quickly found out "dry dock" was to continue as we crossed the Atlantic. New carpet in dining areas laid, but didn't look vacuumed. Major Internet and TV upgrades led to outages and on board dry dock employees continuing their trade. We took a 26 Days Transatlantic Cruise after being on 14 Holland American Cruises - but this one was a real problem - it had just come out of dry-dock and not ready when we embarked in Ft. Let me preface my remarks by saying we have taken one to two cruises per year from 2006 to the present. We’ve been on at least a dozen different ships and NEVER experienced anything like this.
I booked fifty (50) nights on the Nieuw Amsterdam (April 8 thru May 28) based on the reputation they have enjoyed through the years.

There was a drill for the crew when we came aboard and all the elevators were unavailable. Neither of us handle stairs very well and if we had to climb more than two decks we wouldn't have been able to do it. The Greenhouse Spa was wonderful. Our first transatlantic cruise - greatly enjoyed the six days' crossing, which were relaxing and allowed us to get our body clocks on Europe time. Having sailed on the Nieuw Amsterdam before, I was so disappointed in the entertainment. One night there was no show at all! The music was mostly Motown, not my favorite. The HAL Cats were missing. The ballroom dancing was not available some nights and the band had never played together before this cruise so it took too long between songs and they did not play long enough.

We had a great time. There were amazingly calm seas. The dining room experience was good - they accommodated special (low sodium) diet issues and that was excellent. This was another good cruise...our first TA and our 15th HAL cruise. The "dry-dock" continued right up to the last day when we left the ship in Venice. It was more nuisance that inconvenience but it would have been nice if they had completed the work before selling tickets on the next cruise.

My wife and I did a 26 day cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam from Fort Lauderdale, Fl to Venice –- with 16 stops covering 7 countries. I have been on about 15 cruises covering many lines.

We took the TA on 4/8/15 after having been on 2 other HAL ships that definitely had staff issues and maintenance problems. We figured we'd give HAL one more chance and we are glad we did!
