The Cruise from Hell

Review for a Europe - All Cruise on Braemar

We had travelled on Balmoral and thought this was a good cruise company and we needed a break. The cabin was adequate but very tired. The bathroom facilities very basic, and this was a Superior Suite, £5k plus!!.. The food on board was adequate, buffets were varied but nothing out of the ordinary offered. Very little fresh fruit, lots of tinned, and very few vegetables with plated meals. The ...

Balmoral Blues

This was a really disappointing cruise. From a 7 hour delay in departure, 4 missed ports, 3 Captains and an ignominious homecoming with one of the lifeboats strapped to the bow deck like a bathtime duck, this was definitely not Fred Olsen’s finest hour. Storms in the North Sea resulted in the ship docking very late at Southampton with many passengers having several hours wait in the ...

Were we really on the same ship?

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Balmoral

I was brought up to say nothing, if I couldn't say something good about someone or something. So I will not have much to say about this ship. Built 28 years ago by the German builders Meyer Werft as one of the most luxurious ships of its day. It certainly is not that now.. It was very early in the year to travel north. Too early. The daylight hours are very limited. The weather is often very ...

Irish Markets

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Balmoral

Calling this cruise Irish Markets was a joke. First stop Falmouth which I must admit I enjoyed very much lovely day & very quaint shops. Next stop Dublin not a Christmas stall in sight oh yes one. Our last stop Cobh for Cork very disappointing Christmas market consisted of fruit & veg & meat stalls oh yes & one chocolate stall so how they can call this Irish Christmas market cruise beggars ...

Review for a Baltic Sea Cruise on Balmoral

The worst cruise of our lives. I became sick on the second night and was confined to cabin with my husband for 48 hours, it would seem that we came off lightly, some people had longer confinement, o e lady told us it was 4 days. the cabin was nice but the floor was never hoovered ,there was dirt on the inside of the wardrobe doors, there ware no handles just a groove to open the door. The ...

Balmoral problems

There was much that was good about this cruise, in particular the staff, entertainment and food. However from day 2 passengers were falling ill with gastrointestinal outbreaks. This affected the facilities available, for example closure of the jacuzzis, closure of the gaming tables, some of the toilets around the ship, no table top sales, temporary closure of the gym, no self service buffets, ...

Poor Value for Money

Review for a Norwegian Fjords Cruise on Balmoral

We have always wanted to cruise the fjords and have been looking forward to this holiday for several months. My partner has problems with his breathing and cannot walk long distances, for this reason we chose Fred Olsen because the ships are smaller than many of the other cruise lines. Embarkation at Newcastle proved to be a nightmare, we asked whether it would be far to walk and were told ...

Filthy Conditions and Poor Service

Review for a Norwegian Fjords Cruise on Balmoral

First Time Cruiser • Age 70s

Never again. The so called "Superior Balcony Cabin" was filthy. Furniture drawers had not been cleaned out for months with residual filth including a drawer which refused to close because of soiled underwear left behind. Response to complaint poor - was offered a move to a state cabin but it was little better in terms of cleanliness. Our cabin was never hoovered during the entire ...

Alas, Fred Olsen

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Balmoral

I must start by telling readers that I am usually pretty shirt if people start moaning about perceived trivial service faults while on holiday, especially on a cruise where so much can go wrong but is usually so right. On this occasion I am forced to change my position radically. I shan't bother Fred Olsen again and the following explains why. Friends, upon whose judgement previous experience ...

Awful, Dated; An All Round Unforgettable Experience, for All the Wrong Reasons

Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Balmoral

User Avatar

2-5 Cruises • Age 50s

This is an old, dated ship that is in dire need of updating. The décor is a mix between a 70's social club and a care home and the smell in some of the corridors is nauseating. We were only on board for 3 nights but had to move room each night due to cabin problems. The staff watched us move and didn't offer any help and indeed, for the last move, our old room was cleared before we had a chance to ...
