Have sailed several times with Fred Olsen on the Borealis, this will probably be my last cruise with them. The suite was tired looking, with two large patches of water damage stained black. Despite this, it had everything needed for a comfortable short cruise. The cabin stewardess was excellent, nothing felt like too much trouble, but this really is where the positives end. The ship has not aged ...
We've just returned from a trip on the Borealis to Norway and the Shetland Isles, The staff were amazing and very attentive.
The ship appeared clean, though I didn't see any anti virus sprays being used, just area's wiped down with the same cloth, that would of actually spread the virus. And we had lots of dust buddies under the beds.
However, the beds were super comfy and the pillows, we ...
we arrived today for our cruise on the Borealis, albeit it should have been the Blackwatch. The cruise has been booked for other 2 years and the only reason we booked it was that we had cruised on the Balmoral the sister ship to the Blackwatch and the balcony suite was exceptional, our friends had also cruised on the Blackwatch and they assured me the balcony suite on there was equally as good. ...
We choose this cruise for the destination and size of ship, it was a very special occasion for our friends, their golden wedding anniversary we are all fast approaching 70, young at heart and outgoing but this was like a care home for the eighties, and we were all treated likewise, in fact we felt like cargo.
The ammount of maintenance work going on was unbelievable the continuous smell of ...
Very dated ship. Mainly elderly passengers. Nothing on during the day except bridge bingo and handicrafts. More like a floating care home. Tour operator extremely unhelpful.. Don't book flam railway through olsen it's a lot cheaper to do yourself and there were plenty of seats. Guest service manager very helpful as had to move cabins as extremely noisy. Noticed a lot of cutbacks. Eg no conditioner ...
Here goes, firstly the good points…the food was very good and the waiting staff where on form and attentive. The room was as expected and overall the interior of the ship was good. The entertainment from the guest performers was excellent, Steve V King and Barnaby were fantastic.
And then the negatives…I thought the class system was fading out but how wrong, we wished to change our dining time ...
The prospect of seeing the Northern Lights was the main reason for choosing this cruise and, to be fair, we did see them. Unfortunately the experience was spoilt by poor itinerary planning (e.g. an afternoon call into Trondheim, where attractions are only open in the morning) and a general sense that Fred. is nowadays only out to extract as much money as possible from you. The tours were grossly ...
Once and Once Only
My wife and I have over the years taken many cruises with many different lines, but had never been with Fred Olsen before and won’t be going again. We had heard mixed reviews about Fred, with some friends liking it and others hating it. So we decided to try a short cruise to see for ourselves before booking anything longer. The conclusion was once and once only, there was ...
“Worse things happen at sea.” They did. BE WARNED. . . . .
We selected the Fred Olsen cruise to The Baltic 1) because it coincided with our 30th Wedding anniversary and 2) We would be in St Petersburg for 2 days the highlight of our trip. As a bonus there will be a gym, a library, self service coffee/tea bar. What more could you want?
Here is what we experienced:
THE SHIP - ...
We were on the same cruise as lynandjohn below and basically agree with all their comments, although not so keen on the entertainment apart from Chris Gee who did a couple of very good talks.
We also did the Alla Tours two-day excusion in St Petersburg which was really excellent with a superb guide.
The previous post has highlighted the limited time we had in Stockholm which meant we ...
