Suberb, clean, modern, well organized ship.Armin, room steward and Michael cruise director were charming helpful and kind.Great staff, meals and itinerary.ThanksCaptain Stamen for great leadership! The included on shore trips were great. HOWEVER, those with canes, or disabilities don't have equal access to sites which require extensive walking, climbing .However, staff at the sites eg Vienna private show helped with special access to elevators and seating. The music shoe in Viea was outstandin and worth every penny. Loved the Hungarian band and dancers on board the Sky Glad to have all tips included in price.Easy! The buses to and from sites were well organized . Luggage handled by staff boarding and debarking. Weathe was great for the end of August on the Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest except a bit tpp warm om Aug 30 to Aug 31. I would recommend this trip and itinerary. Just add more otions for those with disabilities and perhaps seat these people first on buses. Read Less

As travel agent, we wanted to try out the Emerald service, and we are convinced, that the service is fabulous and excellent. We sailed from Nuremberg to Amsterdam, in July 2019. After arriving from the airport we got on board in minutes. The staff is extremely polite, and nice at the reception, in the restaurant, in the bar etc.. The pool has a relaxing atmosphere. The city tours have been well organized with professional guides, comfortable couches. We had great opportunity to visit the most important places, monuments, castles and churches. During our free time we have been good advised to explore the cities in an independent way. Every evening we had various entertaining programs with a lot of fun and laughing moments. The whole crew made our trip enjoyable, comfortable and memorable. We enjoyed our breakfast buffet every morning and 4 courses dinner each evening as well as our lunch combining buffet and menu. Additionally we had joyful teatime and late night snack. All food was fresh and well prepared. Read Less

The Douro River was a cruise we had not yet taken. We have experienced a number of other River Cruises and Cruise lines. The Emerald Radiance is the best we have experienced. We particularly appreciated their all inclusive policy. We were traveling with a group of 14 all were pleased with the great service provided by a welcoming and knowledgeable staff. The meals were varied and delicious. I particularly want to thank HOTEL Manager Manuel for his excellent service .Emerald will be at the top of my cruising list. This is a fairly new boat on the river, equipped with Wi-Fi in every room. Instead of a balcony or a patio door there. Is a window the width of your room the top half of which folds down into the bottom half at their touch of a button to give you an open air view. The visits to wine Estates are extremely well done with experienced guides. Try it you'll like it. Read Less

This was our first river cruise. We boarded after 3 days in Amsterdam, which is a great city, by the way. It was well worth the extra time. We had a little trouble finding the ship as the one we were to board had been replaced by a sister ship. It was a twin, however, and offered a very similar venue and service. We were greeted with a nice drink, lunch and an easy check-in. The next couple hours were for unpacking and exploring the amenities. All was as advertised. The Emerald Sun is only about two years old, quite beautiful and offers all the modern amenities. My wife enjoyed the pool and exercise room, while I enjoyed the running track on the top deck and the sun chairs on sunny days. Over the next 15 days we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, especially Yana who was the coordinator for all things touristy. I don't think Yana slept and was exceptional in a minor crisis when we were not able to pass under a bridge. She organized our stay in Vienna in a 5 Plus star hotel and arranged transfers, tours, meals, etc. without incident. She was exceptional to the very end.... of our trip....not us. Robert, the ship coordinator, was also very organized and always there to wave goodbye upon our departures and greet us upon our return. All of the staff were exceptional. The food was very good in my estimation. There were smorgasbord style meals for breakfast and lunch, and a gourmet meal in the evening. The staff moved meal times to accommodate our various activities and were always generous with the wine that was regional with our approximate location. The tables were placed so that those who wished to socialize could do so, and the more isolated types could isolate. There was also a more limited meal in another area for breakfast and lunch that offered peace and quiet, albeit a limited selection. I, personally, enjoyed the peace and quiet. My one complaint about the meals would be that the gourmet dinner took about two hours. I enjoy such a meal about once a week, but every night is a bit much for me. The food was of very high quality throughout. Our cabins were bright and clean with our trusty cabin keeper, Widodo, always available at any hour with a ready smile and chocolates on our pillow before bed time. I don't think any of the staff slept. The full wall of windows in our room provided a great view of the world as it flowed by, and the open air feature was wonderful on warm and sunny days. Sometime we were just happy to sit in our room and view Europe pass by, as if we were watching a travelogue. There were tours almost daily and extra tours if you wanted to pay a bit more. These were well organized and interesting with knowledgable leaders in each port. One could also opt out of an organized tour and create your own. As I do not always play well with others, on a couple of occasions I used the provided bicycles and toured villages along the route by myself, stopping for a nice coffee or local brew, feeling like one of the locals. The bikes were probably expensive but not a style I would have chosen. They did do the job however. Yana was very knowledgeable about almost everything and provided lectures on various subjects such as: coffee, facts and history about certain regions, and her end of the evening jokes weren't too bad either. Several times local entertainment was brought in to give us a taste of the local culture, such as Hungarian dancers in Budapest and an amazing violinist in Vienna. Although there were many highlights of the trip, the two that remain most outstanding in our minds was the private evening concert in Vienna in a room where Beethoven had once conducted a symphony, and the visit to a Slovakian village and the home of a Slovakian family. I came away realizing that we are all part of a world family no matter where we live. Good people are everywhere. In summary, this was an excellent experience. I would chose Emerald anytime, and would promote Yana to CEO. Read Less

Had a great week with Emerald Sun- Our ship was changed right at the last minute from the the Emerald Sky, because of water levels in the Danube being low. After looking at Emeralds website the ships are the same ?? We were a group of six my mum and dad, who are in their 80's and not great on their pins, and dad is partially sighted. We hired two wheelchairs so they could be part of the holiday, otherwise they had intended to stay on board while my brother and his wife, and myself and my husband went of the excursions The boat is lovely lots of glass and mirrors and decorated throughout to a very high standard. The rooms are also lovely, with a great shower, comfy beds. Big picture windows that are floor to ceiling make the room feel spacious. The food is good, breakfast had the usual- hot, cold, cheese, cold meat, cereals, juice, porridge, pastries, bread and lots more. Lunch was buffet- always a joint/meat carved for you, selection of veg or salad, and desserts. Evening meal was waiter service- four course 5/6 on gala nights, not huge portions but is very beautifully served and if you want more just ask. It not like the sea cruises where its pile it high food. Would have been nice to have a small buffer in the late evening, just cheese and biscuits sort of thing. Evening entertainment is limited- The piano guy was very good, just a tad loud to hold a conversation in the lounge, but unfortunately there is no where else to go, other then the pool area, which has seating in the evening,, but is silent. Could do with an alternative lounge, or keep the piano down a bit until its later and dance time. The excursions where all good-and they accommodated the wheelchairs and always had a slower walking group. Lovely German Villages. Amsterdam was a treat, Cologne very interesting, and the villages full of cuckoo clock houses, some dating back to 1200's. My one disappointed was that after we had left Cologne, we had no sun deck, an area on the top of the boat with deck chairs etc. Such a shame, no where on the paper work does it say that this has to happen because of the low bridges on the Main river, it made the out side space very limited. And if you stayed on the boat you had to fight for an out side seat, or seat in your room, or by the pool. Sitting in the pool area was nice as it has glass on 3 sides so good panoramic views, but when its warm, out side would be better. They should tell you this is the case. The pool itself was a lovely little feature, small but with a jet to swim against if you wanted it, nice loungers, coffee machine, very pleasant after walking around on a hot day. Service was excellent- everyone was very attentive, nothing was to much trouble anywhere on the boat. We had a drinks package which was great, a coke otherwise is 3.40 euro's. I think Emerald are offering packages now as standard. We had assistance booked at both airports going out and back because of Mum and Dad, going out was very good, but very busy, having our own wheelchairs was a god send , otherwise we would have had to wait up to an hour for assistance! Coming home Munich Airport- no assistance was forthcoming as they said they had no record of it, but we could wait, again anything up to an hour and a half, .which time the flight should have been boarding, as we where stuck in a bit of traffic We went through using our wheelchairs instead but we were the very last people to check in, so we ended up seating all over the plan - not a big deal for four of us but my parents need help- any way as the BA flight only take card and my dad had them- we had made sure mum had cash to get a drink on the flight- but she didn't have a drink or anything- they are both diabetic- this is not a good thing. Any way they where fine just thirsty. All in all a great holiday with just a few niggles. Emerald cruise line is very good. I am 50 and felt it was for slightly older people, but never the less very enjoyable. Read Less

We were welcomed on board and we're treated like family from the start. Food not your usual "international cuisine" but included real Portuguese gems. Fish was so well cooked, as we're the meat dishes. One of our party was a veggie who confirmed the range of food available was fab for non meat eaters. Complementary wine, beer and soft drinks with meals was not stunted. All wine served was local to the region and was a real complement to the food. A drinks package was off set by on board credit and gave unlimited access to branded drinks. Discovery of the trip was chilled pink port. Ship was extremely clean and comfortable, and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Vessel was stable when moving and it was wonderful to watch the countryside go by. Locks were great fun especially as you could get really close to the walls. Sundeck was lovely with partly covered areas which helped prevented me from burning. Pool was only thigh deep and you could sit on the floor and keep your head above water. Would have been nice if a little deeper. Trips away from the ship were very interesting and the guides had a very good knowledge of their subjects. I'd recommend the evening event to the local vineyard as the wines, port and food excelled themselves. It could do with being a bit longer so you can soak up more of the atmosphere. Holiday not suitable for young children or young families as the average age of the fellow passengers was late 60 ' s at the youngest. We're all in our 50 ' s so managed to cope; any younger and you'll not have as much fun. Less able bodied people will enjoy the whole experience but you may struggle at times, although the crew will do their best to help. Overall a very comfortable enjoyable cruise with a very friendly crew, superb food and a great introduction to Portugal. Shout out to Luis, Carla, Elizabeta, Carlos, Francisco, Eduardo, Roberta, Bruno, Cornel and Captain Alphonso Rivera. X X X Read Less

AFter 4 river cruises, I figured that the companies were all great and did not matter too much. But, I was wrong. My first time on Emerald and I was dissatisfied with the service. Things did not start out too well for me when my airport transportation from Emerad did not show up, and despite there being someone there from the sister company Scenic, this representative told me she never heard of Emerald and would not help me. The driver was contacted by a random stranger and he apologized, but I got no apology from the cruise line or cruise director for the over 1 hour wait. The only other part I personally was affected by was when I inquired about an optional excursion, the cruise director basically talked me out of it and said it would not be that great, but everyone who went on the trip said it was really amazing. I think the cruise directors inexperience really showed in instances like this, and forgetting to tell us to bring our passports on certain excursions. I found my balcony cabin very nice, and roomy for 1 person, but I heard from others that for 2 people it was too cozy. I found that the cabin and the rest of the ship was very modern and stylish, though some of the chairs were too much on style and not enough on comfort (particularly difficult to get out of...). I personally loved that the balcony was just a window that dropped down, I loved sitting there, and loved the extra space that it affords. The food and wine was very good, I really enjoyed the quiet and smaller breakfast and lunch in the lounge. As a solo traveler, I enjoy eating with others but spending over an hour each meal for food and chatting gets tedious. I thought that the guides and excursions were excellent, and seeing Eastern Europe this was was less intimidating (because of language and alphabet barriers). I don't think it is a good intro to Eruope for beginners, and if you are going the whole distance, I would recommend starting East and going west- especially if you go further west than Budapst where the scenery is prettier. The local entertainment brought onboard was excellent, but the lounge was just too small to fit everyone comfortably. One word of caution for those with reduced abilities. There is an elevator on board, but you have to climb stairs to get on and off the ship (and muster). There were a few on the trip in scooters but this part of the world is not ready for this, I saw them always tailing behind and getting stuck with staircase. And, even though there is a slow walkers group, the amount of walking in some ports was a lot, and getting up and down in coaches is also tiring, so make sure your fitness is up before you attempt it. We chose this for its destinations, as it was along the lower reaches of the Danube, which we didn't know. Embarkation was very smooth, though it was a pity there wasn't more time in Budapest. The cruise was full of interesting trips, including visits to a school in Bulgaria, and a lunch with a local family in Croatia. All of the local guides were experienced, very knowledgeable, and spoke good English. The Cruise Director also gave us interesting daily talks on the countries we were visiting. On two evenings we had excellent local dancers/singers on board. Everybody I spoke to enjoyed the cruise very much; the ship is lovely, with good size cabins and lounge, and the food reflected the countries we were visiting. The service was excellent, and the staff (mainly East European) friendly, relaxed and efficient. There is an attractive indoor swimming pool, and a minute fitness room. WE did feel that during the one day with no port stop there could have been more activities arranged, especially as it rained solidly all day.We finished with 3 nights in the Sheraton in Bucharest, which is a stunning city. We mainly found our own meals in Bucharest, but we did feel that more could have been made of the final night's dinner, which was uninspiring and a big contrast to the excellent on-board meals. We certainly plan to travel again with this company, and would recommend this particular cruise as something a bit different. Read Less

This was our 2nd Emerald cruise, this time it was The Danube cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest. We arrived at Munich airport to a well organised transfer to the ship. Slight delay boarding so we were well looked after with refreshments at a local hotel. The cabins on board are excellent, with a high comfort factor, very nicely appointed with large flat screen TV, hairdryer, robes. We were on a lower deck, with no balcony. It was fine, the window allowed river views so we could see the weather conditions! No engine noise, just some shuddering when docking. The lounge bar is very comfortable, although a personal preference would be for the furnishings off its sister ship. The sofas are very deep, not the best for short people and those with mobility problems. Staff are superb, regardless of department. Some are absolutely outstanding. The cruise director was excellent, informative & helpful. The restaurant, wow, what can I say, except I'm now dieting! The cuisine was amazing, great choice at all mealtimes, whether it be a light bight in the lounge or a 5 course Gala dinner. No complaints, only compliments to the chef, his team and restaurant staff. Always delicious wines to compliment both lunch & dinner. The included excursions were well organised, informative and enjoyable. However there were occasions when a member of our party could not participate due to mobility problems. This was usually due to being docked alongside other vessels and having to cross over boats. If it meant crossing from the sun terrace onto another boat, then there is no elevator to the top deck. Also other boats may not have elevators at all. We've already booked our next river cruise with Emerald, exceptional holidays. Read Less

I like to just relax on holiday, so for that reason i like cruises. Unpack once, and meals and activities all become someone else's problem. We couldn't handle another open ocean cruise. No matter how big the ship is, there seems to always be a rolling motion. I don't normally get seasick, but when the person your are with does, it becomes contagious. So this time it was a river cruise. From start to finish, I have never traveled so smoothly. We chose the Paris before add on,and the Prague after. Honestly, book this independently. It was not worth the money Evergreen charged. I booked all my own tours in Paris over the internet and I was very happy with them. ( 2h segway tour of Versailles gardens, 3h segway tour through the center of Paris, 2h group of 6 with own guide through The Louvre) Evergreen chose to cancel the pre-booked Versailles Palace tour the day before it was due to happen. Due to the late notice, my options were reduced to walking up to the entrance through the queue and walking through the palace with a headset. Had I been given a reasonable notice, I could have had the opportunity to organise a private tour. Very unimpressed. Be aware that Evergreen reserves the right to cancel anything, anytime, and does so often. The good, Except by looking out the window, you don't even know if you are moving. Rooms were small but otherwise excellent. Bathrooms were a marvel of space conservation. Public areas were more than adequate. The bad, -The chairs in the cabin are too low. I am 6 foot, and when sitting in the chair at the railing, it is right in the middle of my view. I always found myself sitting high in the chair, or sitting on a pillow. If the chairs were 200mm higher, it would be a vastly improved experience. -The food was adequate but never rose above that. Think RSL fare. Do not expect to be wowed by the offerings. As I said, adequate. -Coffee..........what can I say. The machines were good. The beans were good, But what idiot thought UHT milk was suitable for a boat load of coffee drinking Australians. When the crew were questioned on this ludicrous preposition, I was told twice, that there was no room for the cows on board. Condescending. The boat stopped at a town every day. How hard is it to load fresh milk for coffee? -Tours..........every day we stopped in a quaint old town center. The tours marched off to show us exactly the same things day after day. Why not organise the tour guides to give slightly different talks, which the guests can then choose from? History, architecture. food, scenery, customs, gardens. One example, every day we passes countless vineyards, never a winery tour. - I am 49, I was the youngest guest on board. The average age is about 65 - 70. Expect canes, walkers, wheelchairs. The fastest pace the trip ever achieves is a slow walk. Think about organising your own side tours. The ugly - no ugly, just a bit average, which could be improved quite easily Would I do it again. Yes, but with the experience I have gained, very differently. Much more of my own itinerary. I would smuggle some fresh milk on board. Read Less

Honestly, we chose this cruise line because it was less expensive than some of the other luxury river cruise lines and because it had very good reviews overall. We were not disappointed all all and are very glad we chose Emerald Cruises and the Emerald Sun. The cruise was a great value and we didn't feel like we missed out on anything by paying a lower rate. The facilities and public rooms aboard the Emerald Sun a very nice and have an elegant look and feel. Our cabin was great...no complaints at all. They manage to squeeze a lot of room and amenities into a small space and still give us plenty of storage for our things. We really liked the cabin-wide picture window that lowered half-way down to let the outside in. We didn't miss a balcony at all and think this is a much better way to maximize space. The crew worked very hard to give us a good experience and almost all of them were very friendly. The food was basic, but was well presented. One thing to note...if you're looking for the typical big cruise line food extravaganza with midnight buffets and unlimited food all day, this may not be for you. Food was available only during breakfast, lunch and dinner, which was fine with us, but may not be for everyone. Of course there were bar, coffee, and soft drink services available throughout the day. Ports of call on this cruise were quite lovely. I love the walking tour concept...it's a great way to get a feel for a location. The headsets they have for the walking tours are great also, allowing you to hear the tour guide even if there's a lot of noise in the area. The only stop on our cruise I didn't care for was Bratislava, which feels like a place that wants to be a tourist destination, but doesn't know how to do it yet. I also enjoyed going through the locks, I think there were more than 20 of them on the portion of the Danube we travelled...very interesting thing to experience. Read Less

The Emerald Sun is a modern River vessel launched in August 2015. We started from Nuremberg flying into Munich unfortunately no time to explore area before departing. The Emerald Sun is laid out over 4 decks - 3 accessible by lift. (-1 0 1) Sundeck only accessible by stairs. After boarding transfer at Munich we didn't have to handle luggage until unpacking in cabin. The Cabin My cabin was a Panoramic Balcony room which meant a full glass window that opens often called a French Balcony, The room was a bit tight of space when set up as a twin rather than a double with a gap of about 18" between bed and bathroom door. As a double about 28" meaning if you have a mobility issue may be tight. The bathroom door is opposite main window so you need to think when coming out of shower, they do provide a robe (one size fits all. lol) so you need to make sure heavy blind down if you have a 200 number cabin as you are at ground level and can be overlooked. The mattress was a memory foam type and pillows very soft looked thick but compressed very quickly (Either fibre or foam crumb type) so you may need to use that extra one. Duvet was feather filled which may affect some guests. The wardrobe is a decent size 20 hangers and 2 large drawers. A mini-safe, hair drier and a chargeable minibar. The balcony area has two chairs and a table. No kettle in room however bottles of water are provided to drink. A large flat screen LG Tv with movies and info centre to help guests. The Emerald Sun do not have any cabins for Less Mobile. Instead of do not disturb signs the ship has a switch which turns on a Red light to advise do not disturb, however our cabin stewardess didn't take any notice of this. The cabin are very clean and uncluttered with very neutral colours, it would have been nice to have had a bit more colour. The Restaurant The restaurant is on the Ground Floor with a large mix of table from 2 to 12 with an open seating policy. Most meals are served here accept light meals, mid morning, afternoon tea and late night snacks which are served in bar. Breakfasts are buffet style with a selection of fruits, yoghurts, cereals, juices, cold meats and cheeses, pastries, salad and cold fish cuts, hot items including thin sausages, bacon streaky, beans, potato cakes, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, and an omelette bar which also cooks fried and poached eggs. Tea and coffee brought to table by waiters. Lunch is again buffet style offering starter, soup, salad, entree and dessert normally a selection of regional dishes included. Wine/beer or soft drinks included. Dinner is normally waiter serviced except on embarkation night and on concert nights etc, and is normally starter / soup / entree / dessert / tea or coffee. Wine/beer or soft drinks included. Extra course on Captains and Gala dinners. The menu changes daily. Always available for lunch dinner as back up - Rump Steak, Grilled chicken or salmon. Bar The bar offers a wide selection of both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks with waiter/waitress service accept for tea and coffee where a self service machine is found at the back of the lounge bar (you can get drinks here 24/7) - Hot chocolate and herbal teas also available as no tea/coffee facilities in cabins - some guests arrived in nightwear / robe . Bar closes when last person goes to bed. George plays piano and acts as DJ. Team are very friendly managed by Dragonara. Lectures and entertainment also put on here. Only other area is pool / night cinema . Small pool during day and gym with running track on sun deck Excursions Many of the excursions are walking so please make sure in correct pace as I found as cruise not so busy some where to fast with timings not adequate for older guests or those with some mobility issues. Cruise Director / Reception / Staff in General All main staff very helpful and friendly and speak English although room attendant had limited knowledge of English. Cruise director very good. My husband is disabled and we took a foldaway mobility scooter with dry lithium battery that is allowed on airplanes. All went smoothly at both Heathrow and Schiphol and was brought on board and stored in the reception area where staff charged it nightly. We had booked an Owner's suite in order to have extra space as my husband only has one leg. There was a lift for easy access to the restaurant and only a few steps up to the sun deck that he could manage OK. We talked over with the cruise director the various excursions and there were alternative easier walking routes for those who needed it. Both staff and guests were very helpful if we had to walk over another boat to access the shore or go up some steps so we were able to take the scooter on all the excursions or it was folded away in the coach. Some of the coaches were a little difficult to access due to the height of the steps. On most of the trips to museums, palaces, etc., there were lifts so that we able to access all parts of the buildings. There were quite a few cobbles so a stick would be helpful. I had recently undergone an operation and was having difficulty with my food but Leo ensured that we had advance copies of the menus to make our selection and gave us priority for dinner so I did not suffer any further problems. The range of food was very good and the standard of cleanliness was excellent. The evening entertainment was mainly Lucas playing music but there were some other entertaining events, particularly the night of the staff show where both guests and staff were obviously enjoying themselves. All the staff pulled their weight when needed to help, including the captain who also pulled cases up and gangplank and tested all the bikes for those going on a cycle ride along the bank. On our departure at Budapest airport, there were no porters or trolleys outside the terminal and we had a substantial amount of luggage, including a spare battery in a case and a spare leg, as well as him being on the mobility scooter. The lady rep helped pull 2 cases but it was still a major problem to get them into the airport unassisted with no signage for help. Read Less
