As travel agent, we wanted to try out the Emerald service, and we are convinced, that the service is fabulous and excellent. We sailed from Nuremberg to Amsterdam, in July 2019. After arriving from the airport we got on board in minutes. The staff is extremely polite, and nice at the reception, in the restaurant, in the bar etc.. The pool has a relaxing atmosphere. The city tours have been well organized with professional guides, comfortable couches. We had great opportunity to visit the most important places, monuments, castles and churches. During our free time we have been good advised to explore the cities in an independent way. Every evening we had various entertaining programs with a lot of fun and laughing moments. The whole crew made our trip enjoyable, comfortable and memorable. We enjoyed our breakfast buffet every morning and 4 courses dinner each evening as well as our lunch combining buffet and menu. Additionally we had joyful teatime and late night snack. All food was fresh and well prepared. Read Less

We had an amazing time on this cruise. Everything thing runs like clockwork. We were picked up from the airport and then from that minute onwards everything was taken care of, from embarkation to disembarkation. We had to think of nothing. Which is exactly what I wanted. We were in a Balcony Suite which was was just lovely, we could lower our window down to half way and just sit and enjoy the view. The staff were friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble. Even when there was an emergency they were willing to send emails for passengers to loved ones who had no way of contacting them. Louis the Cruise Director was so helpful and friendly. The towns that we stopped at were so beautiful. The food was great and we got to try a lot of the local foods. We also went to a Concert in Vienna which was fantastic. Ship was changed to Emerald Dawn due to low river levels This was our first river cruise and it was fantastic. The crew were all very friendly and helpful and everything was on time. We stayed 2 days in Amsterdam before the cruise and shuttles were provided by the cruise line. Meals were excellent, cordon bleu level, provided by the executive chef and pastry chef on board. Dinners a leisurely affair from 7-9pm. Beer and wine complimentary at lunch and dinner. Buses to, and walking tours of cities all included with knowledgeable guides Entertainment included an electric violin concert and an operatic duet performance. The passengers were from Australia, Canada, USA and UK and it was very easy to mingle and get to know a lot of them. We would highly recommend Emerald Waterways to anybody wanting to take a river cruise. Despite being only 5 years old, this company knows how to do everything right. Read Less

Friends picked this cruise for us ! Overall, our trip from Bucharest to Budapest was excellent. The ship had great staff with excellent food & wine, both notably with local origins. Our cabin was just 20 steps from the pool. There were a few minor problems: -air conditioning was sometimes poor, most notably in busy restaurant at dinner -WIFI was intermittent, we lost WIFI for 3-4 days along the Danube- most frustrating ! -The map for Ruese, Bulgaria was incorrect; the ship was berthed off map; our walking tour was most interesting though and worthy of our efforts. People most helpful & friendly. The itinerary included many interesting locations, with much history to see & enjoy. The guides were excellent. -The wine tasting near Vidin was excellent. -more time could be spent in Bucharest & Budapest on our itinerary, Overall, an excellent itinerary and an excellent ship, the Emerald Sun. Having done several ocean cruises we wanted to do a river cruise to compare. Cabin staff were excellent room kept very clean and in good order, our cabin steward Gabriel was exceptional. Public toilets were insufficient only one on each deck! Breakfasts and lunches were very good, however evening dinners left a lot to be desired. Portion sizes on some meals were very small, ice cream desserts were often served melted, fresh cream was not used at all always spray cream. Fresh fruit salad only contained one fruit generally melon. One guest had ordered perch as a main course, I have seen larger goldfish in a bowl! Another guest ordered chicken breast but was served chicken with a bone in whilst others only had two thin strips of the chicken.Entertainment was limited to a pianist each evening he was very good. A violinist on one evening was excellent but only for half an hour. Two opera singers one afternoon for three quarters of an hour they were very good but it would have been better in an evening when everyone was on board. Read Less

After reading many reviews we chose Emerald Waterways for the value, amenities, and itinerary. They did not disappoint. We were picked up at the airport and had seamless transfers for each leg of the trip. We added the pre-cruise package in Zurich and Lucerne. Stayed in great hotels and had a fabulous guide accompany us throughout. Embarkation and disembarkation were fast and painless. The Emerald Sun is a beautiful, modern river ship that is well maintained and exceptionally clean. All of the staff were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. 182 guests to 46 staff- not a bad ratio! Our room was very comfortable, with a surprising amount of storage room. Great shower. Great bed. In addition to the usual items, we found robes, slippers, an umbrella, and even walking sticks in our room. The ship includes an indoor, heated swimming pool (with optional current) at the stern that looks out to the river through a floor to ceiling window. The floor of the pool comes up to created a movie theater on some evenings. Emerald brings bicycles along for passenger who wish to use them in port. There was a nice variety on the menu and all of the food was beautifully presented. Some dishes could have used a bit more flavor, but that was our only complaint. Wine and beer were complimentary with lunch and dinner. Each port included an excursion and we found each of our guides well informed as well as entertaining. We loved that fact that our entire trip was included in their pricing-even the tips! We felt we got a wonderful value as well as a memorable trip! Read Less

We had never sailed on the Rhine and wished to see Strasbourg. We had sailed with Scenic before and Emerald are a part of the same group, so we had reasonable expectations of a similar high standard. The food and service were excellent. All the crew whom we interfaced with throughout the cruise were cheerful, helpful and could not be faulted. This includes Cruise Director, Hotel Manager, Reception, waiters, wine-waiters, seamen, cabin housekeeper and catering staff. The resident pianist/singer was excellent. The ports and excursions were fine, but there could have been more and more varied en-board entertainment. We had an inclusive drinks package which worked well, but not all the table wines were first class. In particular the Austrian Merlot was very thin and had little flavour. All the food was excellent except for one starter of salmon mousse which had no salmon taste and a beetroot soup which was very pale and tasted of nothing at all. Read Less

Emerald organisation was faultless from initial booking, speedy boarding with EasyJet through airport collection, transfer to the ship and welcome aboard, the cruise itself and return to our homeward airport. Emerald Sun is a lovely, comfortable, relaxing ship with excellent facilities for river cruising including a swimming pool and cinema. Our en-suite cabin with full depth opening picture window was very comfortable, clean and well serviced by our great cabin steward. The crew were, without exception, tremendously friendly, efficient and attentive, the food was good with a good varied selection at breakfast, lunch and dinner with beer or wine included in the price at lunch and dinner. Daily tours off the ship, also included in the price, were excellent with knowledgeable English-speaking guides, several with an excellent sense of humour. On-board entertainment by a resident pianist / singer was good and he was joined by additional entertainers at a couple of stops en-route, who also were brilliant. All in all a brilliant cruise in every sense. The Emerald Sun is still a new ship with new shiny surfaces and pleasant decor that is attractive and comfortable. The staff are all welcoming and willing to do whatever is requested to make their contribution to the guest's journey being positive and memorable. The Tour Director Jana was exceptional in her local knowledge and advice and charming and engaging in talking to the full complement of guests. The waiting staff in the restaurant were all happy, friendly and willing to help in any way requested. The quality of the food was always outstanding with variety and flavours that were equal to any high quality restaurant. Wines served were excellent and one reisling was the best I had ever tasted anywhere! Our cabin on the lowest deck was still roomy, comfortable and had more than enough hanging and storage space. The room was always well prepared each day. The cruise line makes its ambition to ensure all travellers are fully satisfied, even to the point of providing exceptional alternatives when our boat was unable to sail for 2 days due to flooding in the Danube. The compensation was more than one would expect and contributed to a sense that this line is remarkable in placing passengers before profit. An outstanding effort. Read Less

The whole trip came to life with the help of an excellent Tour manager, local tour guides and a super itinerary. The ship is really well appointed, and the cabin layout well designed. The daily programmes interesting. The organisation of the ship is well managed apart from the wine service which calls for a dedicated wine waiter. Too often their Job was hampered by having to break off to serve wine. Some tables lucky and others not so. Food onboard well presented but the quality at times could be better ( Steaks need to be trimmed of a lot of fat). Breakfast service excellent and dishes replenished quickly. Lunch choice limited, but Dinner even more so. Reception team helpful and efficient, as were all the staff. Read Less

The cruise was preceded with a three day stay in Prague, at the 4* Hotel Grandium. This in itself was an absolute delight, excellent food, room, fellow passengers and our lovely Prague tour guide, Jakob. After our stay there, we were transported in a luxurious coach to embark the Emerald Sun at Regensburg. This was instead of Nuremberg due to the water level for the Danube being lower than usual and the ship didn't have the draft. The ship is very well laid out with spacious restaurant, superb cuisine, included wine and beer and ample opportunity to make new friends if desired. Our cabin, well appointed, a electrically operated full scale window, very comfortable bed, very adequate shower and storage. The entertainment was very good and original using local entertainers and even visiting local families and their homes. The staff from Captain to engine room staff were very courteous and welcoming, all English speaking and extremely helpful. Our entertainments manager, Nina was a pure delight, she was so hardworking, funny, a real beauty and very supportive and kind. The shore excursions were very interesting and well planned. We had a wonderful evening meal in a palace with traditional dancers and music. We also went one evening to a Strauss Chamber music event, again in a palace in Vienna - marvellous! We would certainly use Emerald again and would recommend it to you based on the experience my wife and I had. Read Less

Been before on Danube, Budapest to Amsterdam in 2014 when all was excellent. This time, September 2017, the quality of the food was not up to 2014 standard. The ship, crew, amenities, cabins and trips were all excellent but the food was very average indeed. Since part of cruising involves good meals we, and our friends, were very disappointed. It would appear that we were not alone - there were quite a few grumbled fro previous Emerald cruisers and all were disappointed with the standard of food offered. This would appear to be a fault of central buying, set recipes and standardisation of meals. Please make some changes or we will stay away in future. What a shame since everything else on the ship was perfect, crew, excursions, guides, coaches and general experiences. Cabins and cabin staff excellent. Cannot speak too highly of the overall standard of the ship. Sort the food out! Read Less

My mothers friend suggested it! We went mother daughter trip, had an amazing time! Upon arrival in Iceland someone from Emerald was there to greet us and make transition to bus and to boat inAmsterdam so smooth! sailing the Rhine river was so enjoyable with so many sights to see! The excursions were catered to several levels of fitness so even those who had difficulty could enjoy the touring spots! Breakfast and lunch...so many choices available. Dinner was always delicious although smll for my appetite! The wait staff absolutely phenomenal!, couldn't say enough about our usually like Zulkipili, Padli and Dragana, as I'm sure all of the staff were so helpful and personable! Each and every staff from the dishwashers to the captIn were all so pleasant and receptive! The tour guides except for 1 were all amazing, well informed and attentive to all the people in the group! the ship was beautiful, except those darn silver shiny strips on the stairs, oh my when the sun shines they can blind you! Yes the ship was always kept clean, saw Eva and many others constantly cleaning and polishing and removing Anything dirty! The music was well done, thank you Benny! Iwould suggest some local music playing in the background, maybe on the bow seating area or topside! I can't say enough about the excursions, Emerald got you there and back with no problems and made everything so interesting and easy!! Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise because we have been wanting to take a "refresher tour" of some of the stops our ship made. The remainder of the cities we visited were new to us. We especially wanted to tour Budapest, Hungry. For personal reasons we weren't interested in taking a large, crowded, and hectic cruise ship for this trip. The pace is slower on the river cruise. The smaller number of passengers on board allowed us to meet many interesting people rather than just those at our dinner table. The tours of the cities were through enough for us to become familiar with the territory, and explore it on our own. The cabins are as comfortable as a large cruise ship cabin with the usual cabin services available. There was always a wide variety of food to choose from at every meal. I would not recommend a river cruise for children in that the tours and activities are better suited for adults. There is a small pool but not much else for children. Entertainment was planned with adults in mind. Our embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. We had a wonderful cruise director. Were there any negatives? Well, it rained which limited time on the sun deck. Some of the city maps given to us (especially for Vienna) were not great resources for finding streets. Yes, we would take another river cruise as long as the stops on the trip are of interest to us. Read Less

We are not frequent cruisers and this is the first European cruise we have been on. My wife has had recent foot surgery and we were looking for an undemanding holiday. In all respects the Emerald sun met our expectations, with the exception of the dining. This was OK for breakfast and lunch but for dinner the chef had opted for style over substance, with smeared sauces on the plates and careful placement of food but the dishes were uninspiring. We also thought that as we were travelling through Germany that there should have been some German food on the menu. The cruise however was well organised with easy embarkation and excellent service from all the crew. Cabins were very comfortable and clean. The bar staff very friendly and the all inclusive drinks package included several single malt whiskies and other quality brands. Excursions were well run and included in the cruise price, this included a tour of Amsterdam canals on our arrival. There was a small swimming pool which was quite secluded and very pleasant, this doubled as a cinema in the evenings when the pool was covered. The evening entertainment was varied with a particularly good violinist one evening, the resident pianist was good but could have done with turning his amplifier down as conversation was sometimes difficult. Had a great week with Emerald Sun- Our ship was changed right at the last minute from the the Emerald Sky, because of water levels in the Danube being low. After looking at Emeralds website the ships are the same ?? We were a group of six my mum and dad, who are in their 80's and not great on their pins, and dad is partially sighted. We hired two wheelchairs so they could be part of the holiday, otherwise they had intended to stay on board while my brother and his wife, and myself and my husband went of the excursions The boat is lovely lots of glass and mirrors and decorated throughout to a very high standard. The rooms are also lovely, with a great shower, comfy beds. Big picture windows that are floor to ceiling make the room feel spacious. The food is good, breakfast had the usual- hot, cold, cheese, cold meat, cereals, juice, porridge, pastries, bread and lots more. Lunch was buffet- always a joint/meat carved for you, selection of veg or salad, and desserts. Evening meal was waiter service- four course 5/6 on gala nights, not huge portions but is very beautifully served and if you want more just ask. It not like the sea cruises where its pile it high food. Would have been nice to have a small buffer in the late evening, just cheese and biscuits sort of thing. Evening entertainment is limited- The piano guy was very good, just a tad loud to hold a conversation in the lounge, but unfortunately there is no where else to go, other then the pool area, which has seating in the evening,, but is silent. Could do with an alternative lounge, or keep the piano down a bit until its later and dance time. The excursions where all good-and they accommodated the wheelchairs and always had a slower walking group. Lovely German Villages. Amsterdam was a treat, Cologne very interesting, and the villages full of cuckoo clock houses, some dating back to 1200's. My one disappointed was that after we had left Cologne, we had no sun deck, an area on the top of the boat with deck chairs etc. Such a shame, no where on the paper work does it say that this has to happen because of the low bridges on the Main river, it made the out side space very limited. And if you stayed on the boat you had to fight for an out side seat, or seat in your room, or by the pool. Sitting in the pool area was nice as it has glass on 3 sides so good panoramic views, but when its warm, out side would be better. They should tell you this is the case. The pool itself was a lovely little feature, small but with a jet to swim against if you wanted it, nice loungers, coffee machine, very pleasant after walking around on a hot day. Service was excellent- everyone was very attentive, nothing was to much trouble anywhere on the boat. We had a drinks package which was great, a coke otherwise is 3.40 euro's. I think Emerald are offering packages now as standard. We had assistance booked at both airports going out and back because of Mum and Dad, going out was very good, but very busy, having our own wheelchairs was a god send , otherwise we would have had to wait up to an hour for assistance! Coming home Munich Airport- no assistance was forthcoming as they said they had no record of it, but we could wait, again anything up to an hour and a half, .which time the flight should have been boarding, as we where stuck in a bit of traffic We went through using our wheelchairs instead but we were the very last people to check in, so we ended up seating all over the plan - not a big deal for four of us but my parents need help- any way as the BA flight only take card and my dad had them- we had made sure mum had cash to get a drink on the flight- but she didn't have a drink or anything- they are both diabetic- this is not a good thing. Any way they where fine just thirsty. All in all a great holiday with just a few niggles. Emerald cruise line is very good. I am 50 and felt it was for slightly older people, but never the less very enjoyable. Read Less

She worked extremely hard day and night, and ensured everything ran smoothly both on the ship, day excursions, and nighttime entertainment. The cities we visited were great, with comfortable coaches and knowledgeable guides waiting for us at every stop. We did city walking tours, usually around the old towns, and also had free time to explore the cities on our own. If you want to rest, then day excursions are quite tiring, so some people stay on board the ship to relax. Some sailings are over night, so we often woke to find ourselves moored further along the river. The ship is very smooth, with very little movement felt, even at night while sleeping. We chose this cruise because I wanted to see Heidelberg again and we chose Emerald because it had been recommended to us. This was our first cruise of any kind. The cruise started on a Saturday and we were leaving home on the Wednesday, three nights earlier, to have one night nearer our airport and two nights in our embarkation city (as part of oour booking). Two days before leaving I emailed Emerald as I had not received any documentation. I receive back a confirmation that my documentation had been dispatched by courier, with a delivery by 20.00 hours on the Wednesday. I had to suggest the documentation be emailed to me, then we delayed our departure until after the package arrived at 16.00 hours. After that hiccup the organisation couldn't be faulted. Transfers from airport to hotel and hotel to ship worked perfectly. We had a wait in the ship's lounge until our cabin was ready but that gave us an opportunity to meet and talk with some of our fellow passengers. In the main breakfast and lunch were buffet style and waiter served at dinner. Wine and beer were complimentary at lunch and dinner and we had the drinks package for other drinks. This meant carrying a package ticket but after a couple of evenings the bar staff knew we had tickets and didn't ask to see them again. Service was outstanding in both the restaurant and the lounge bar. Entertainment in the evening was a good mix with not everything being to everyone's liking, but something for everyone. In the main the ports and excursions were good. In hindsight we wouldn't have gone on the Alsace Wine Tasting Tour as we didn't think it was value for money and would have preferred spending more time in Strasbourg. The visit to the open air museum of 16th century life and demonstration of Black Forest Cake making was interesting, but a long drive. Would we go on another river cruise - yes. With Emerald - absolutely Read Less

Our main requirement was the dates, which Emerald were able to offer us. The places we visited were very interesting but sometimes we were given too much information to take in. We would have liked more time to explore on our own. The lady who took us to Heidelburg castle was very verbose and overwhelmed us with information. The best guide was the one in Strasburg. We thought the en-suit bathroom was very cramped and we were directly under the gangplank which was very noisy. The entertainment in general was very good except for the quiz. The staff were always welcoming and helpful. Breakfasts were excellent, lunch not so good (too much pasta and the gnocchi inedible), and the salad bar was not big enough for the number of people. Dinner was very good except that the soup tasted the same each day although it was supposed to be different flavours! Desserts were very creamy and too sweet. Read Less

We took the cruise on Jun 2017, downstream the Main Canal from Nuremburg, Germany to Budapest, Hungary. We fly into Munich and was transferred to the boat using Emerald's transfer service, which was included in the cruise price. Their agent staff meet as at the arrival hall, help us with our luggage and took as to the transfer vehicle, which is spacious, clean and very comfortable. Our chauffeur did not speak English, but he understand the language well, or perhaps I should say we didn't understand German. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the boat's cruise Director, and we were service a nice cool drink to refresh ourselves. Staff took care of our luggage, and when we went on to our stateroom, our luggage were there waiting for us. Since we arrive a bit early, we were encourage to take a shuttle bus (included) to the town and look around. We walk around, do a bit of sight seeing, using the map Emerald cruise provided, and then get back on the shuttle bus and back to the boat again. The departure time was about 5pm, as a few other passengers arrived after us. First evening, we were invited to a meeting, introducing us to all the facilities on board, as well as whereabout the life jackets were, then follow by the port talk. Afterwards, we went to dinner. Every evening there was the port talk before dinner or after dinner, and we ate at the main dinning room. Other choices are in their lounge. They offer 3 courses, appetizer, entrée, desert, coffee & tea. Food was not great, mostly Australian cooking. However, we found that the kitchen staff didn't cook the steak the way it was ordered, mostly it was overcooked and dry. The Chef seemed to be from India, and liked to use curry. Emerald Sun, the cruise boat, built in 2015, looked great (almost brand new to my eyes) has a great design on its balcony, with the windows open it is a balcony and close it is a floor to ceiling window (we have the panorama balcony suite). Viewing the river scene from the stateroom was excellent, nothing to block your view. We love to open the window for the morning fresh air, sit in the deck area to enjoy the scene. If weather is cold, with a touch of botton, we closed the windows. The room design was great, as you don't feel that the room is less than 200 sq ft. Plenty of closet space, spacious bathroom, and amenities included bathrobes, hiking sticks, bottle water, guide book etc. Every day, we can get to a port, and local guided tour was included. Some days, we can go hiking with the help of the hiking sticks (I wish they put two pairs in each stateroom). Some active bikers can borrow the bike from the boat and do biking tours. However, the bikes are not electric-assisted ones like Emerald's parent company Scenic, Uniworld etc. Another one is the bathroom usuage fee in Europe. I have heard that some other ultra luxury cruise company, like Taulk tour, has that included. Didn't know how it work, but they did. We disembark in Budapest, and we can only book Courtyard Marriot via Emerald Cruise as post cruise staying hotel. That was further in town, not close to the river, like Marriot Hotel or Four Seasons. However, one advantage of Courtyard Marriot is Emerald cruise included all transfer to and from boat and from Courtyard Marriott to airport. Another advantage is that the Courtyard Marriott is close to the New York Café, the most elegant and beautiful cafe in the world , located inside the Boscolo Hotel, was just 5 minutes walk around the street. The river cruise was part of an Italy to UK holiday. From the time we arrived in Budapest from Rome we were assisted in everyway and transported on to our ship in a very well organised manner. Once on board the perfect organisation took over. Great cabin, most meals, entertainment and shore excursions all went like clockwork without being rushed. Fourteen days of wonderful May/June weather, great places to see through Hungary, Slovakia, Bavaria and Holland and a delightful, happy group of passengers who all made the most of what was on offer. Food was well supplied and catering excellently organised by well trained and friendly staff working to a faultless and precise system. The one downside was the evening dinner which to many of our group was too fussy and decorative - not really very tasty food that most passengers had been used to and sometimes a little over the top and of questionable quantity. Breakfast and lunch were more traditional and certainly sufficient so not many complaints for these two. So, an excellent and memorable cruise and we would do again give half a chance. Read Less

As regular ocean cruisers we decided to try something different. We were not disappointed - this Danube, Mainz, Rhine cruise ticked all the boxes for a small ship. Great food, interesting mix of people and very efficient crew. One of the highlights was a tour of the galley which was something of an eye-opener. How five crew members worked in such a confined space producing such excellent food was a miracle! All the tours were efficiently organised and the innovative communication system recently introduced worked extremely well - all the guides raved about it! Destinations were all well worth the visit with usually sufficient free time to explore. The 'extra' tours/trips which included a visit to the Schonbrun Palace and a private concert in Vienna were excellent. Richard Grey the Tour Director was the best we had ever encountered on any of our previous ocean cruises. The only downside to the whole trip was the mayhem at Heathrow which would probably put us off from doing a similar holiday again unless Eurostar was an option. Otherwise, a most enjoyable two weeks which probably surpassed our expectations. Read Less
