I chose this cruise to Mexico as a last minute getaway just after Thanksgiving. Living in Los Angeles made the ride to the cruise ship a 30 minute breeze!
Arriving at the terminal, there was a porter ready to take our bags before we reached the front door. The staff responsible for boarding the ship was extremely organized. The person checking us in was very friendly & professional. After TSA check, they issued group #s and had us sit in the waiting area. Each group was called & we quickly boarded the ship. Again, no standing in long lines. The staff kept the line moving. There wasn't even a hold up to take our pictures for our ship ID. They had enough people to do it.
The first port was Puerto Vallarta. We took the 10 best city tour. It was great! The guide spoke perfect English, was funny & knew the history of his city. The bus was very comfortable & air conditioned. We stayed just the right amount of time in each place without feeling rushed. At the silver jewelry store, they welcomed us with margaritas, beer & water.
The tour included a stop for lunch. It was a nice "Mexican" restaurant (didn't taste very Mexican to me) at the top of a hill overlooking the ocean. Beautiful view. Beware though. The menu didn't have any prices. We figured being in Mexico is shouldn't cost too much, so didn't bother to ask. $60 with tip for 2 people & the food wasn't that great.
Last stop was the tequila factory. We learned about tequila making & had some tastings. Good tequila, but again expensive. Living in LA has me spoiled I guess. We can buy tequila anywhere for a fraction of the cost.
Next port was Mazatlán. We've been there several times, so opted for the "Hop on, Hop off" bus tour. The bus makes 3 stops & at each stop they had a tour guide waiting to take you on a short tour if you chose. We skipped that part, but I thought it was a great idea, if you don't know the place. Saves time & gets you familiar with the area quickly so you can go off on your own. The double decker bus was clean, although a little cramped. Coming back, they had an air conditioned enclosed bus which was more comfortable.
The best surprise about Mazatlán was when we returned to the ship. There's an outdoor plaza with souvenir shops, places where you can grab a taco & beer, music and dancers for entertainment. We stopped there a relaxed a while before boarding the ship. A great idea! For those people who didn't want to do a tour, this was something they could do without being far from the ship.
Finally, Cabo San Lucas. We took the tour boat that goes out to the Arco rocks & then boarded a bus to a restaurant on a scenic hilltop. Both were fun. We had some time to souvenir shop & grab some lunch at the Marina. We went to a restaurant called Whizzie's The best sea bass I've ever eaten! Fresh & flavorful. $2.50 beers & $1.50 tequila shots. Reposado tequila, the good stuff! Wish we had more time in Cabo. The boat left the earliest from this port at 2:00 p.m.
Overall, a wonderful trip. We booked all of the tours through Princes, just because it was easier than bargain hunting for less expensive ones. Glad that we did.
The Princess passengers we met couldn't have been nicer. Everyone we met were repeat clients, as many as 15 years. The crew were extremely friendly & courteous. Always saying hello & asking how your day was. Gaby (the lady who sold us the Crabshack dinner) was the most friendly one of all! It was because of her positive attitude & happy smile that we bought the dinner. It was $29 worth every penny & more! We had so much crab, mussels, shrimp & other seafood, I couldn't finish all of it. I made a good effort though! No room for dessert with that meal! I highly recommend it.
The shows on board were hit or miss. The comedian was hysterical! The musical magician show was lacking. The music was ok, but the magician tricks were old and no big deal. I saw the magician again in the Explorers lounge a few nights later & the tricks were what you would see at a 6 year old birthday party. Rope tricks & connecting rings. The jewelry sales were very aggressive. It felt like a time share sale at times.
One thing I learned quick was that you have to arrive at shows 1/2 hr. ahead of time if you want a seat. That means I had to leave the prior show I was at before it ended in order to get to the next one on time. Then sit around for 1/2 hr. for the show to start. Met some nice people sitting next to us, pleasant conversations before the show stared. They need to time the shows better.
The other thing that I didn't understand was their happy hour. A couple of nights happy hour was buy one, get one for $1.00. That's good, but it was only in 1 of the bars on the ship. By the time I got there, the place was packed & the waiting time was 45 minutes to get a drink. Forget about a place to sit. Why don't they make happy hour at all the bars? It would certainly make them more money & make the passengers happy to stay where they are & have their drinks. I ended up going back to the pool bar & having a drink. I only would have save about $5 in the other bar & wasted more time waiting 45 min. to get it.
Disembarkation was fine. When we got off the boat, they had our luggage assorted in rooms by color & number of the luggage tags they gave us. Very organized & stress free. Found our bags right away.
Despite a few glitches here & there, overall the trip was wonderful. If you're looking for a mature crowd & a boat that isn't over stimulating with noisy activities, then this is the boat for you. I would recommend it & would consider traveling again with Princess.
