We have recently returned from the MSC Musica repositioning cruise from Durban South Africa to Venice. We have cruised with MSC previously so are perfectly aware of some of their 'foibles'. The main reason we chose this cruise was for the wonderful itinerary - we visited Reunion, Mauritius, The Seychelles, Aqaba, Suez Canal Transit, Katakolon, Kotor & Split. We had hoped that over the years maybe MSC would improve but sadly things were no better and in some cases worse. Embarkation at Durban was extremely poor - long queues going from desk to desk. Once on the ship we thought that was it, but no, more queues to get pre-paid drinks vouchers - I would have thought that these could have been delivered to the cabins or even put electronically onto our cabin card. We were not able to get into the cabins until after 3pm as they were still being cleaned, I heard of some passengers who’s rooms were still dirty. The luggage did not start arriving at the cabins until after the ship left Durban, some passengers did not get luggage until 10pm. This of course meant that many, like us, were not able to change out of their travelling clothes to go to dinner. The safety drill was held before we set sail. MSC’s safety drills have never been up to much, but this one was the worse - hundreds of people crammed into a show lounge with not enough seats for every one to be comfortable. A short recorded message was played and the putting on of the life jacket was demonstrated (if you could see). No one checked that passengers were putting the life jackets on correctly. We were then dismissed and advised to watch the safety demo on the cabin television (most of which were not working, more about that later). First night at dinner was chaotic, many ate in the buffet, but we chose to go to the MDR. We were shown to our table which I can only describe as being in a corridor/workstation that the waiters use. It was noisy with waiters charging past and other diners using it as a thoroughfare. The waiter who was looking after us took ages just to bring a drink, the food eventually arrived but it was cold and some of the table's order was incorrect. Additionally there were long queues of unhappy passengers waiting to see the Maitre D' to get their dining arrangements changed. The couple we were sitting with really wanted late dining, so they joined the queue and managed to change. We were happy with early dining, but we were not happy with the table that we were allocated, so we asked the Maitre D' if he could move us somewhere else. We were given a new table for the following night - this was in a better position and we had a wonderful waiter for the remainder of the cruise. The MDR for dinner, apart from being extremely overcrowded was adequate, the food to my standards was ok, the portions are on the small side and there is very little vegetables served with the main meal, but you only have to ask for extra veggies or whatever you like. Our waiters looked after us very well. The senior server was experienced and professional, the junior waiter was one of the ‘newbies’ and although extremely pleasant he had no knowledge of the wines he was serving or how to serve them. Breakfast and lunch 'Bistro' restaurant - MSC have an unusual set up for breakfast and lunch in the MDR, they call it a Bistro and basically it means that it is half waiter service and half buffet - you can choose to order from a menu or go to the buffet or a bit of both. Yes, it’s very confusing and it does not work. They also do not have a system in seating passengers, they seem to seat them anywhere where seats are available, making it very difficult for the wait staff. Other cruise lines have a computerised system so that they can see at a glance where seats are available. There were a lot of new wait staff most of them were totally inexperienced and furthermore had little or no customer service attitudes, rumour had it that quite a few were leaving the ship in Venice! Buffet - we rarely use the buffet, but from my limited observation, the choice of food seemed fair, but it was a mad house, getting food and a table. Service in general around the ship was poor, the main problem being there was not enough staff - you often waited a long time to be served in the coffee shops and bars. Reception staff could be rude and unhelpful. I ordered a birthday cake for my husband, it did not arrive in the restaurant on the night I requested it and after some 'insistence' they very ‘graciously‘ presented it to him the following night, but with no apology. Entertainment - I have mixed feelings about the entertainment. Some nights it was good, others it was very poor. They had an African group of Tenors who performed three times and were excellent. There was also rather a lot of classical music, probably too much for my taste. The MSC production shows tended to be very much the same. There was also entertainment in one of the show lounges, or on deck each evening, but these events did not start until quite late. Additionally there were usually some bars where you could go to dance or listen to music. There were never any movies shown either in the theatre or on deck or on the TV in the cabins. This was a very long cruise with a lot of sea days and I think a lot of people would have appreciated a few films. Day time entertainment was mainly limited to deck games and handicrafts. There were two 'lecturers'; one a lady who presented very interesting port talks and a man who apparently gave talks on a number of scientific/technical themes. Shopping was very disappointing - no choice, low stocks, poor merchandise, high prices. The cabin - we had an aft balcony cabin on deck 11. The cabin was equipped with all we needed, but it was quite small, the cupboard and drawer space (for a long cruise) was a bit of a squeeze. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was tiny and a bit worse for wear - the water in the shower either scalded you or froze you - there was no in-between. The TV never worked until we were In Europe, although we reported the fault several times. Our cabin boy did his best, he had 22 cabins to look after on his own and was often still working at past 10 pm at night - he definitely was not a happy boy. Our greatest disappointment was the balcony of our cabin. We had booked this cruise long in advance to secure a balcony cabin over the wake of the ship. However, there was inadequate information on the MSC website, as the balcony had no overhang above and therefore no shade or protection from the fierce sun. This made the balcony unbearable and unusable for much of the day. Hygiene standards - from quite early on In the cruise it became apparent that there was a nasty cough-type virus going around. As the cruise went on the coughing got worse - you could hear it all over the ship and especially in the theatre. The powerfully cold air-conditioning did not help. Some people seemed to be getting quite ill and needing to go to the ships doctor - some I spoke to were being prescribed antibiotic drugs. I contracted whatever bug it was about 10 days before the end of the cruise and it took me another two weeks after returning home to finally get over it. I think that the hygiene standards could have been better. There was gel available at the restaurants and other areas, but it was somewhat erratic, whether the staff encouraged passengers to use it. Itinerary and excursions - the wonderful itinerary was the main attraction of this voyage for myself and many other guests that I spoke to. We opted to do MSC organised excursions in most ports and generally speaking the excursions were very good and the guides were of a reasonable standard. The only issue with the excursions was getting from the ship to the excursion bus, the meeting place was generally the theatre or one of the big Lounges and it was pandemonium getting a ticket and getting off the ship. MSC provided a lovely cruise visiting some stunning ports of call, the weather was wonderful and the sea beautifully calm Is that enough to make a good cruise experience? In my opinion NO. As cruisers I think we want more, we want and expect great service and attitude, good food beautifully served. Fantastic entertainment and enrichment and above all a 'can do' attitude. When MSC can offer me that I may give them another try, but for time being I will be looking around for the best other cruise lines can offer Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the destinations and the price was reasonable. We cannot express in enough terms how disappointed we were with this ship. We purchased an Aurea pkg. which included: priority boarding (that did not happen, we were kept waiting on the docks in the sun for nearly 25 mins. Pkg. also included a 'solarium area' . This area was no different to any other area except that it was on a different deck and had no shade what so ever, uninviting we never used it. There is a policy that towels are not to be left for over 30 mins. on deck chairs, what a joke. Staff were afraid to say anything because of reprisal from the passengers. Pkg. also included sauna, steam room and gym. The sauna and steam rooms were often very cool or inoperable. Juices offered in the buffet area were like cordial, the food often cold and seating hard to find as people would sit around talking for ages after they had eaten. The other option was the dining room where it was difficult to get any ones attention to get served, it was chaos. It was quite obvious that the staff were all new and did not know what to do. Staff were observed coughing and sneezing into their hands then carrying on working. No wonder that there were many people with the flu on board. The quality of food in the evening dining was cafeteria style. Never again. The dining room staff in the evening were excellent as was the cabin steward. All this has been reported to the travel agent who reported to MSC line with one reply having an excuse for everything. Read Less

We wanted to go to Pomene so we booked on this cruise for that reason, only to be told during dinner that the Pomene stop is cancelled due to increment weather and for passengers safety. The next day the sea was so clam and the weather forecast showed that the weather in Pomene was near perfect, i queried this at the transfers desk where a senior lady advised that they struggle to go there due to the following reasons: Sailing too close to the coast and the potential harm to the coral reefs, the boat trip top the island is a bit rough and they find it hard to navigate there. The Cruise Director at the Q& A also then confirmed that in the last 18 months of sailing they only managed to dock there 3 or 4 times! Ridiculous. Why then do you advertise it if it is near impossible? The food was not as good as expected from previous experiences: The eggs were all pre-fried and cold. The cream for flapjacks and waffles was hidden under he counter every morning and you had to ask for it? The hot chocolate was so bad it was like gross milky water...and i can go on, but we also pre-bought 2 x non alcoholic packages and a coffee package. The sad thing is: we could not use it at breakfast even at formal dining - you had to go to a specific bar to get speciality coffee/hot chocolate or an espresso after dinner, then they ran out of stock of chocolate cappuccino and white chocolate (coincidentally the more expensive items) so the pre-packages are worked out on the most expensive drink and those you cannot get...so when you work out what you pre-paid vs what you get; you actually pay more!!) Then we ended up having to buy a soda package on board as you can't get non-alcoholic drinks like mocktails, milkshakes and smoothies - you must go to deck 13 to get it at a specific bar, not to mention that the smoothies is one fruit juice mix and not the freshly squeezed ones that they make...so its all really false advertising. It was the worst cruise ever. The entertainment was not too bad but the 2 lead singers were painful to listen to. Brayn Miles as excellent and the gymnasts were amazing... Some staff were great - in the general buffet and public areas, there were 2 that stood out Jorgi from Cuba and Eduardo from Mexico that were fantastic. I am also very disappointed with MSC's response and handling of their customers. I will not book an MSC again Read Less

Deck was no clean, poor arrangements, dirty and sticky floors. drunk people at night bumping everywhere. no enough space on deck for any activities. very less area for kids activities on the deck. poor management on kids club as every 2 or three hours have to fetch and drop which is more time consuming then anything. monotonous breakfast, not much choice. piza was good. waiter was not good enough to give us information regarding food. received wrong dishes. Maria, the receptionist was excellent in her service. She was very friendly and always smiley. good excursion at inhaca island. enjoyed 4x4 ride. Tea and coffee were poor standard. Burnt coffee and no good tea made it worst in morning. the standard for the shows was not that good as sinfonia. Average cruise. Read Less

The first time with Sinfonia was excellent. Everything were more than expected. A dream come true. That is why my husband desided to surprise me with early birthday gift... A cruise on Musica.. We were so disappointed with Musica. Paying for balcony view but could not use it because both sides and all over no smoking area people were smoking. We had to close balcony all the time due to smoke. On deck there were on both sides people smoking . We complained about the rooms and balcony that our neighbors smoke, and no one did anything. Most food dishes had curry therefore we ate hotdogs or humburgers most of the time . We did ask about food they reply there is Indians on board but 95 % were South Africans. And coffee terrible. No decent coffee. Had to ask for nescafe. Waiters hide it because guests steal the coffee. The entertainment team on deck were good but not so interactive with guests. The entertainment shows inside were very good. The overall neatness is very good. But for children sitting between people smoking and not catering for all guests made me give a poor rating. We paid for experience of a lifetime not running from here to there just to search for spot to breathe fresh air or to look for something to help with heartburn.... Read Less

1st time on MSC and was disappointed, it was a cheesy experience. Things I liked: I liked my cabin it was spacious but you could have had a kettle with Tea/Coffee available. If I didn't book a balcony cabin I would have been really stuffed up. I enjoyed the island Things I disliked: Food was terrible, no taste mass production, the pizza was the worst The plates & cups were filthy. Free coffee at Buffet very bad It's Cheaper to buy Water & Coffee cash if you a none drinker than buying vouchers, vouchers are a rip-off. Toilets onboard were pathetic Onboard entertainment pathetic, Only two shows 7 pm & 9 pm nothing else to do during the day. The pools are a disgrace, very small & deep The games room pathetic hardly any games All in all, I tried it and I disliked the experience, I won't cruise local again maybe I would consider a much larger ship with better water activities This cruise is for old people and people just looking to get drunk and party. I chose this cruise as it was my husbands birthday which was spoilt by the staff at reception and lack of stock . The menu has 5 options and then you only have 1 available. Then you go to the bar and they only have 1 of three options available. We not talking about anything special we talking about champagne. Then we moved cabins because I paid for a non obstructed cabin and got an obstructed cabin. They told us they moving us now. 45 minutes later nobody came to the cabin. Then out of anger we phoned reception and told them to leave it as we cannot stay in our cabin waiting for them. Missing all the entertainment etc.. When we came back to our room at 11.15pm being tired as it was our first day and had to get up extremely early only to find our room emptied and no note informing us which new room to go to. We had to go to reception and then get the new key and empty the safe.... etc. Not once did someone around the pool area offer us drinks. Not once. I spent a lot of money at the shops and photos etc. I bought guess bags and presents for my husband(4.5L chivas regal besides other things) on the boat so it is not as if we were on the boat and not spending and giving back. We have been on the cruises 4 or 5 times. Why does everything not open when we are moored at the islands. Especially the spa. We paid for two pampers but the timing was always awkward as there is only certain times. The more the shops etc is open the more we spend which would be great for your benefit. I don't shop with the crowds like the last day. I shop daily during my cruise. The room cleaners are very helpful and always pleasant. If we book first sitting it is for a reason. I have a colon problem and cant eat late at night or else I get cramps and my stomach runs. First had to fight for that as well on the first day. This cruise really spoilt my husbands birthday and did not work out like it was supposed to. Very very disappointing. After our fourth or fifth time on the cruises we think this is our last. We were supposed to book with another two famalies at the end of the year of January next year but we told them we don't think we will be going. IT is their first time and we were supposed to show them around. We have always been on 4 nights or more to get the feel of the boat as we stay far. (In Port Elizabeth) . WE normally fly in the day before the cruise starts and also pay hotel fees and that is besides flights. We also have to take a taxi from the airport to the hotel and also from the hotel to the harbor and back to the airport which is a costly experience so therefore one expects Service and understanding from the staff. Very Very disappointing. Read Less

This was my 8th cruise and defenitley the worst cruise! 1. Very poor Safety drill, was done in 2 minutes. Crew only showed how to fasten lifejackets. 2. When we asked for help from cabin steward at 16H00 after bording he said that he cant help till after 6 as he is bussy with lugage. 3. We tried to phone help desk but the phone was not working. I eventualy found out the 9 button on phone had to be pressed verry hard and to hold it in for a few seconds til it dail. We reported it but as per technision this was acceptable an didnt do anything to fix the problem. 4. When we went to eat the problems realy started. I had to firstly at every meal clean old food from my wet plate! And still after complaining about it nothing was done! 5. At every meal we had to ask for butter and the response was that there was not butter as there was delivery issues! They eventualy bring butter to our table after our food was cold or finnished. 6. This was the dirtiest cruise ship of all your MSC ships that I cruised on. Lounge Chairs with very old stains and arm rests with old brown fatty marks only clean where the previos passangers hands pressed to stand up. 7. Entertainment at shows after evening meals was repettitve, the same 4 entertainers with the same preformence only different theme... 8. No smoking areas on deck was a big dissipointment. We had to ask several people to not smoke and had to show them the no smoking signs. This caused very tense moments. Please make it clear to all passangers and ask crew to when they walk pass pasanges that is smoking in no smoke areas to address them. So that we dont have to! 9. Our nice view from our balcony was ruined as the lifeboat below my cabin was used as an ashtray. And the stompies was roling around on the roof of the lifeboat. Must be up to a 100 stompies seems like an astray was emptied from a balcony. We also reported this several times on our 5 day stay. Nothing was done! Very dissipointed in MSC as I realy looked forward to cruise with you but this standard of cruise will ensure that I never recomend MSC as a fantastic holiday cruise to all my family and friends. And the photos of a very dirty ship can not be placed on my sosial media as I am to ashamed to show that I cruised on a very dirty MSC Musica! Read Less

Embarkation was really lengthy as customs was offline on the day. If you pay a little extra it would be better to go with the easy onboard option. The ship is lovely and clean. Unfortunately i feel that they over crowd the ship with too many people... 95% of the time we had no where to sit. This was on the ship and on the islands you disembark on, we ended up getting severely burned as we had to stand in the sun all day.The buffet was a nightmare. We hardly had anything to eat there as the food was either finished or you had to queue for a REALLY long time to get anything. And by "queue" i mean free for all every one barges in from all sides. They should really implement PORTION CONTROL and a proper queuing system for the buffet. Also had to wait most mornings outside the cafeteria to try even get a table to be able to eat a breakfast. Then when you get inside you queue again to try get food. Rather use the restaurants as at least you know you wont go to bed hungry at night. The staff are always friendly and ready to assist which was lovely, but unfortunately the overall experience was not what i had dreamt it would be. Read Less

This time it was over crowded and loud and the buffet restaurant was a disaster. There were never place to sit and the dirty dishes was all over the place, not to talk about the food quantity. I think MSC is now focusing on quantities and not quality. the bar's and lounges was good, the music was okay, was hoping to have at least an Italian band like the time on the Sinfonia. The theatre shows was medium and also very short. I would really not recommend this to my family and friends as it felt that we were in an South African Hotel where its over crowded and people are dishing as if there is no tomorrow. I felt neglected. I never experienced this on other cruises and really I am not a picky person. I always say there is so much food. eat what you like. Choices a lot less than international cruises. Safety procedures the first day were very unprofessional compared with other cruises i have been on. Instructions were received in a crowed lounge with no intention to demonstrate an emergency drill next to the lifeboats which has been done on previous cruises I have been on. I felt a sense of poor attention to emergency by the crew. The cabin was well fitted out and comfortable. Food was generally of poor quality. Crew on board were generally helpful except for the day of arrival at Durban. Disembarking was a total shambles. The 5day December cruise on the Musica was a fantastic family holiday with fair value for money. The whole experience of the MSC starts when you book, and you can imagine my frustration when booking the room, they say that they only have 2 sleeper cabin and having to take 2 rooms only to find out once in the rooms that both rooms which they said was 2 sleepers was actually 4 sleeper and MSC SA denying it. I must wonder if this was a scam my MSC to fill up the rooms and why MSC SA is avoiding the issue and not providing feedback. The onboarding process is long and tedious with no changes been made to cater for a third more passengers than the Sinfonia. Be prepared to wait as it can take over 3 hours to get onboard the ship on from the time you leave your bags. Once onboard the immense size of the Musica becomes a reality with stunning lounges, bars and overall facilities, though cleaning up of the ship was still taking place at 1pm from the previous cruise. What made the Christmas cruise special was the ginger bread house, the shows including the kids and Christmas into it, the food carvings, the midnight layout of cakes and food, and the carol singing. The service was exceptional all round except for the doctor, from the waiters to reception to the cleaners of the room. I would like to commend the staff for the great care and service they provided, always accommodating and willing to assist. The food in the restaurants was fabulous, well presented catering to a variety of needs. The food in the buffer could be improved for breakfast. With the Musica been an Italian ship I expected more Italian variety and better pizzas instead of plain dull pizzas. I had the unfortunate experience of having to use the doctor on board the ship. The experience was unfortunate as the doctor though been South African was totally incompetent, having ready the report by the night shift doctor 3 time could not recall what he read, his speech was incoherent, and everything was maybe we should do this and was not sure if it was the right approach. He could not even work out the right dosage of antibiotics to prescribe. He should not be on board the ship let alone treat anyone. The process for the photos is chaotic with passenger frustration running high due to difficulty finding photos, getting clarity on the packages. MSC can greatly improve the service by implementing a tracking using the room card to tag each photo against similar to what Disney does in their parks. Also enable the viewing of the photos online avoiding the wastage of printing phots only to be destroyed. Read Less

We have always wanted to experience a cruise and planned for it for 2 year. My son was on two cruises. We spoke many people who have been on cruises and questioned them about their experience and the do and the don'ts etc. I honestly expected a lot more and was sadly disappointed and would not do it again. Frankly I found it very boring. I covered the ship and explored what was available from entertainment to shopping in a few hours. The cabins are fine. Dinning was fine. Entertainment and Activities limited. Service fine. Port and shore excursion apart from swimming fine. We traveled with two kids aged 11 and 14. They enjoyed themselves as children always do. But even they complained about the activities. They played fuss ball most of the time. If drinking all day long is your idea of fun then I will never go on another cruise again. The buffet food was pathetic to say the least. White dry hot dogs and soya bugers and chips all day every day. None of the food is freshly prepared. Everything prepared in bulk for the three days reheated and served. They ran out of tea and coffee all the time. The coffee tastes like mud. Everything is of poor quality and the trip is so expensive. The coffee was really bad and weak. The ques for breakfast was the worst. We struggled to get seating yes and the bad coffeee. Dinner is much better organised. I think the same should done for breakfast. Read Less

We discovered the MSC cruise through a friend ,she gave us a news letter from MSC and after reading we develop interest and started inquirering and we end up booking and paying deposit to a friendly staff. Embarkation date arrived and it was our first time to cruise,we were welcome by friendly staff, the ship was big. We were booked in 5 star balcony cabin a full house. We were dinning like kings and queens.Entertainment was gallo we were treated equally as humanbeings .Service was excellent and not forgetting the tasty food. We had a three course meal every day.I am busy recruiting my friends to join in april so that they can experience this wonderful cruise on their own. The cruise was booked cause my mom always wanted to do it so for her 50th birthday present we did the cruise. First it was not organized you stand in a 2.5 hour que just to get into the ship, crew members are rude and had no respect for the passengers especially the first day when you lost. The food is amazing. Shops were also way over priced. They take photos all the time but way over priced to actually but the photos especially if you would like multiple photos.... Cabins are also exteamely small can hardly move in them. Entertainment crew outside were really good and interactive. Theaters were also very good. The fitness center was extremely nice had everything you needed for the time that you were there. Snorkeling in Pomene was a waste they send you to an edge that the water is all green and cant see anything. Overall would not recommend the cruise though thought it was very over rated Read Less

Joined the cruise as a group booking for a friend's birthday celebration. Off the bat we were all excited and mostly on the same floor, not next to each other, but that was fine. Accommodation: Rooms and cleaning staff were probably the best part of the trip, neat, friendly staff here too! Dining: Halal: The concept of halal is very confusing on this cruise, we are told meats are halal, but there's ham, bacon, etc. which I fully understand, but one would assume the "Halal corner" would have said halal meats right? No, here we get vegetarian omelettes. Also, having sliced ham next to sliced 'halal' meats is not halal friendly, diners not Muslim easily use utensils across various products. So I stayed away. The real issue came when I experienced these 2 scenarios: Scenario 1: Seated dining, noting 'meats are halal sign at restaurant', where at least 3 of the meals are cooked in wine! This is not on and not acceptable! Scenario 2: At the destination there was a BBQ, whilst dishing at the buffet I asked the server which are halal to which he says 'everything' so I asked, "even the stuff labelled pork?" to which he chuckled and told his colleagues as if it was a fat joke. I am not a religious fanatic, but some mutual respect and common decency is expected when working in a service industry. Buffet (Breakfast & Lunch): let's just say we eventually called the buffet "fight for food" because that is what it felt like. Never mind the queues, the way people over dished and wasted was uncanny. The ship was ill-prepared for the rushes and ran out of food at the one destination too. Seated Dinner: Dining experience was terrible as we weren't all seated near each other, but a few tables away spread across 3 tables. In an effort to maximize mingling we would shuffle ourselves so we all could chat, the waitrons complained about this for each meal and were just uncouth.one even made fun of the way someone pronounced some wine! Unnecessary and disrespectful. Considering the seated dining is considered "fine dining" the way the waiter would ask for the beverage coupons mid meal was rude. Vouchers: MSC we are in the 21st Century, surely the idea of little vouchers (very barter system like) that could get wet on a boat is a bit outdated - unless that is the plan? How about pre-loading this and all other packages onto the cruise card and giving us lanyards so we don't a)stand in queues upon arrival b) lose vouchers c) don't have to constantly carry books around whilst trying to swim!
