the 2 stop-overs at Portuguese Island and Pomene Islands made this trip exciting. I can safely say i loved Pomene Island more than anything else...the white fine sand and the shady coconut trees make the island full of life. we never had hassles embarking or disembarking because we always had offers to get priority service (in addition to the excellent en suite cabins topped with a balcony). lots of activities ie the pool games and parties, music in the magnificent lounges, theatre performances and night parties. Oh and not forget the Photo gallery where you catch the best picturesque moments on board. Those photographers really know their job hey. Always had a hard time choosing what to take and leave. we loved having our food at the buffet mostly rather than restaurant and i have no complaints on the abundance of food. The icing on the cake was dressing up to meet Captain Ciro Pinto. Hats off to you Sir. Great service from EVERYONE!! Read Less

These people's embarkation and disembarkation process is NIGHTMARE. By the time you get on the ship you are dehydrated, exhausted, confused and disoriented and you 're bombarded by people selling packages. Non stop and just overehelming. When you get on you have to wait til 1.30pm for your room and up to 7pm for your bag. Then when you get off the ship they line your bags up just after you walk off the ship. So they are not doing you any favours by taking your bag the night before. Tip: take your own bags. On top of this we were first group to be told to get off and last ones to get our bags. And they tell us our tags may have fallen off (us and 50 others). Our tags were very much still on the bags when they were eventually offloaded. They are just incompetent. Food at the buffet was never enough. Tip: if you're not doing the dining then go to buffet early. We had one decent meal on the trip which was on the first night. Water is not complementary as they make you believe. No water in room. You are assigned to eat in the dining area where they serve you food and you pay for drinks. At the buffet they have 2 dispensers which people flog. TWO dispensers on the ship for 2500 guests. wow. By the way they close the dispensers at 10pm. So pay for a drink or die... they charge $20 for a photo on board. I wasn't going to pay that for a photo of me hot and sweaty after 3 hours in their boarding queues. Cabin was spacious. We had a balcony view which was wonderful. Shower had great pressure. Tip: No lotion or conditioner or vanity kit provided in room. Excursions off shore were worth visiting but queues to get back on board were crazy. Also the food gets finished really fast there too. And noone cares if you ate or not. Tip: go early. Leave early. Tip: take rands for the islands. The souvenirs are cheap and nice. Tip: Eat on time. The entertainment staff were AMAZING and so good. Really that was 10 out of 10. The other staff probably need to be treates better so they can be nicer to people. I witnessed many rude interactions where thy ignored a guest in need and I stepped in to help them instead. Especially at the buffet area. We had a waiter at our dining table who was very unfriendly. I think his name was Wilfred from St Vincent. Pools very overcrowded and smell so bad. They lock the bar fridge the day before you leave. This didnt make sense to me at all. It was the only day we didnt go offshore so people were around in their rooms, hot, thirsty, so why lock the bar fridge? Don't they want to make money. Definitely buy drink vouchers. Even if you dont buy it before u board, you can buy it on the ship. Vouchers save you paying 15% tip every time you order a drink. Read Less

The only thing i wasn't convinced is dismbarkation prosigure, the daily programme showed that everyone will meet at deck 6 then we'll instructed by the crews, unfortunately there wasn't any crew member, we sit down at deck 6 while people were disembarking from deck 5.. and no announcement were made, 11. Language area there was only one crew member but not control making sure that everyone takes the right language, according to the cabin numbers.. 12. My first experience on the cruise was excellent. The staff all over was great, especially Maria in the Tucano lounge. The theatre was fantastic and entertainment staff was great! My favourite was the transfers to and from the islands. We however had a few niggly irritations. We opted for easy on board, but after exiting the immigration officer a bottleneck occurred just before we boarded the ship. This is the section where the pictures were taken. A space needs to be created for passengers to go through who isn't interested in taking pictures. The other issue was that some passengers on the ship had no manners and was unruly. This occurred daily. It is advisable to have staff behind the counters at the buffet section on the ship and on the islands where the dishing of the food can be controlled. At the buffet section on deck 13.. People were dishing stacked plates of food which left the rest of us only with pizza, burgers, chips and hot dogs. On the Portuguese island we didn't get any meat only a piece of sausage...people were walking with plates stacked with meat and thereafter we would see the untouched wasted meat. The restaurant was fantastic. I loved the fine dining, however we waited too long in between courses and this occurred the whole week. The luggage at disembarkation needs to be more controlled as it was chaos...My review is to make MSC aware on how to make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Lastly I would recommend the cruise to anyone as it was a great overall experience. Read Less

We flew from Cape Town to Durban early Sunday morning and arrived to beautiful weather in Durban. Our transfers Mzansi Destinations, were waiting to deliver us to our hotel, Belaire Suites (four*). After check in we took a walk along the beach-walk and enjoyed the famous Bunny-Chow. Monday morning our transfers arrived to take us to the port of Durban. Very excited to get to port but when we saw the long ques to traverse the excitement went out the window. Long ques, hot, stuffy terminal and when I got turned back from boarding the ship, my patience was sorely tested. Due to an official error I had to return to the beginning of the line to have my embarkation ticket re-printed. On ship there was nobody to point you in the direction you had to go. The ship is huge, has many beautiful lounges, our favourite was the Tucano, where we enjoyed the music and drinks. The shows did not live up to my expectation as only the first show impressed with glitz and glamour, the others were dull compared to previous trips with MSC Symphony, Sinfonia 1&2, Opera. Dining was good in the restaurants even after waiting a long time for our meal the first evening. The second dinner was served speedier and we decided to skip the last one and missed Italian Night, because this was not stipulated in the daily program. The cabin was always beautifully cleaned when we came back to it, but on the day before last nobody could use the toilets, as they were all blocked, all over the ship, not just our cabin. This was only remedied late in the day. I loved going to Pomene Island because we got our tickets before breakfast and arrived very early on the island. The previous day we were not wise enough to collect our ticket early and arrived on the island around lunch time. Most of lunch had run out already and we had to make do with the left-overs. But we enjoyed the sea which was beautifully calm and the sand hot. I would go again on the Musica, especially to the islands, but I felt as if the ship was over-booked and there was too little control over the crowd. Read Less

The one thing i didnt like about the food was the lack of healthy options. Our waiter Budi was great and provided us with great service. The public bathroom were always full or out of order and i found myself having to leave deck 13 to go to my room to use the bathroom. I also think that the gym should be opened before 6am as breakfast starts at 7am and there are alot of activities to do during the day. I was also disappointed with the communication levels, eg when we got in the boat the staff did not communicate the importance of reading the daily criteria and how to read it. More especially for new or first timer goers. Overall experience: Was great. Value of money indeed Read Less

We had a lovely time on the cruise. I particularly loved the attention to detail, the professionalism with which everything is run and managed - schedules, communications, general respect and courtesy by staff members! The fine dining was also a key highlight for me, as well as the cleanliness of the cabins - far better than some 4-star hotels! It was just extraordinary!! Everything is well planned, there is a variety of activities for all ages - there is never a dull moment! The entertainment is well thought out across the various areas and spaces. The food was also great - especially the dinner though the bigger restaurant sometimes had a very limited variety of food. The excursions can be improved though as there is not much to see at Pomene, for instance except the hotel ruins - maybe a village tour or something exciting will do, though the quad bikes offered a youthful alternative for the excursion. I know the sinfonia and I was excited to experience the musica. I have been on the sinfonia 4 times. My mom went once. I surprised her with this trip and she loved it. I was delighted to get a balcony suite for the first time ever. For that I thank you so much. The value for money was like no other and well appreciated It was the most beautiful experience that mom and daughter could have. The service has declined a bit but the revamp on the island and the musica itself made up for the overall decline in service. I was concerned by the drunk teenagers on-board and I would like the MSC to take this matter seriously and have stricter control measures for teenagers drinking alcohol on board as in South Africa it is illegal for teenagers to consume alcohol. A lot of schools send their teenagers on-board, this should come with a strict no drinking rule and stricter control measures such as getting rid of all teenager from the night club after 10. Alcoholism is a serious disease. A teenager can experience alcohol for the first time on the ship and never stop again. Can the MSC also do something about the food waste. That will give you the budget for other areas and to add more south african chefs who will cook real braais on the island and Indian food as we know it. It will even allow for more free consumables such as juice. Please get rid of the huge plates that cause waste. The smaller the plate the more controlled the portions. Human beings tend to dish up according to the plate size and not the appetite, no matter how big the plate is. Overall the experience on the musica is better and the food has improved. The addition of the fruit stands in the dining rooms and the island was such a great idea. The pizza stand on the island is also great. I love the musica and I will be coming 3 times this year. I also tell a lot of people about it on all my social media platforms. Read Less

We have chosen this cruise because we were previously on 2 voyages with the MSC Opera and Sinfonia and it was unforgettable voyages. The service and food in the Restaurant was very good and more than enough. Experience with the Musica was also good but we found that the food in the Restaurants was scaled down and our room service was not standard. Our cabin was neglected with the clean up when we got up. Another problem was that our cabin cleaner was not able to speak English and struggled to communicate with him. Entertainment was very good in the theatre as well as the singers who performed. The visit to the island was very enjoyable, as were the meals and entertainment. However, there was also the problem that we could not get chairs / seats at the pool as people occupied more chairs than they needed, sometimes it was also a problem to find a table with chairs in the restaurant to go for breakfast or lunch. The cruise has gone very well and will definitely going on more cruises in the future. We are planning to go on our 4th cruise next year. Read Less

The facilities on board caters for anyone, young and old. there are places on board where you can relax and listen to music. game shows, Karaoke, dancing, Entertainment. you name it they have it. I had a small problem which was sorted and they apologised by sending me a bottle of bubbly and some snacks. i even received a birthday card. I will definitely go again. This was my 3rd time on board MSC. The only downside are the long queues for passport checks :). i danced the night away. i ate tooo much on board. The crew and staff are very well organised and groomed. i would like to book again for 2020 on board the MSC Orchestra. The ship is BEAUTIFUL. well done MSC. Read Less

From entering the ship throughout and up to disembarking was absolutely fantastic. The absolute highlight was leaving harbor with the horns "sending" us on a exciting voyage. We could listen to this over and over again and never get bored with that sound. All staff was friendly and courteous. The entertainment another big compliment as they were great. Food and drinks excellent. The trip to Portugese islands was such fun and the day spent so refreshing and relaxing whils sipping a fitting Mozambique cocktail of Rum & Raspberry - our names reflected and suited us perfectly. Enjoying island life( if only for a day), and wishing it could last forever. PS: think you made us "Cruise Addicts", as this was our first cruise but not the last. Have been on 3 previous cruises, Symphony and Opera and wanted to share this with my fiance. The level of service have definitely decreased and on the Sunday you just feel as if they want you off the ship. The balcony cabin was nice but the floor was broken in front of the sliding door - did report this. No beach towels in the cabin and what a mission to get some! The food was great except for Sunday lunch where they didn't have enough food, the space was far to little and the restaurant was dirty. Not an enjoyable experience at all. On a positive note, the shows were fantastic and every night just got better. The food in the evening restaurants were also very nice and a great experience. It is a pity that the top deck of the ship can only be accessed if you pay. On the island you also had to pay if you wanted a lounger, seems that money is now the main object for MSC. Read Less

Firstly the embarkation took 2 hrs. It was hot and stuffy in that hall. The staff at the front desk on the ship were very unfriendly. The gentleman cleaning the cabins, had no respect for our Privacy!! He sees me at my door and says he will bring my towel a little later. I was lying on the bed. He opened the door, than knocked and said hello. I was very upset!! Sunday morning was the worst morning. There was a problem in the front of the ship. I just used the toilet and I could not flush. The first two calls my husband made to the front desk, the lady said she will send someone. An hour later no one came. The third call a gentleman answered and said that there was a blockage that needed to be cleared first, than only will the toilet work. The lady was clueless!! There is an intercom system. They could have at least informed us. Buffet area.. Chaos!! We don't eat beef and pork and we didn't have a variety to choose from. As for the seating, there was no order and no space. Dinner was very disappointing. The food was tasteless and dry. Dessert was the only edible thing we enjoyed. The waiter was unprofessional. As for breakfast at the restaurant, we were not informed that if we needed something else other than what was for buffet, we could ask the waiter. We saw people walking with eggs made differently, buffet had scramble eggs. When we ask the people, they said you must ask your waiter, he will bring it for you. Our waiter told us that its buffet and if we wanted tea. Thats all!!! At the jewelry table, on the last night, the people were unfriendly and unprofessional. There was a special, buy 3 watches at a special rate. I chose a rose gold watch set ans held it in my hands. While looking for another two, the gentleman insist that I give him that one while I look. Didn't want to cause a problem, I gave it. After buying everything, he shows me the first box I gave him and puts it in the packet with the rest. Trusting him, we walked away. A few minutes later, sitting at the bar, I opened the package. He gave mw the wrong box. I went back to him. He looked through all the boxes, didn't find the one I chose, doesn't apologize, and says, he doesn't know how it got switched. My husband and I really didn't enjoy this trip, especially since it was our very first trip on a ship. Not a memorable one!! Read Less

I chose this cruise to celebrate a special occasion being my partners birthday, and the cruise on the MSC Musica seemed the most appropriate for the said dates, I have only read about the Musica via newsletter from travel agents and no person in particular and least to say that the ship is beautiful and looks amazing. Unfortunately, I wish I had the same sentiments to share about the staff and the food on board, The staff lacked the warmth and enthusiasm that one can expect as a guest on a beautiful ship. They seemed fed-up so to speak to be there. Most of them looked really tired and the they also displayed a lack of knowledge as to what happens on the ship. I must add that most of my negative comments are related to the cafeteria staff. Furthermore the food was of very low quality and stale. It seemed as though the ship was not fully stocked with fresh produce to provide for the guests, The burgers and hotdogs were dry, the coffee was cold. The day we were out on the island, and got back in the afternoon, there was no food on deck 13 cafeteria. When we asked the staff, they said that "we don't know" or "we don't have". There was a chef making pizzas which were tasteless and dry. That was the disappointment that I have experienced and this being my first cruise does not leave much to be desired again. However, one of the good experiences we had was at dinner time. We had an awesome waiter named SetiaBudi..He was hands on, very attentive and obliging. Our Balcony suite was clean and comfortable and beautiful. So..therefore I have mixed emotions. Read Less

MSC Cruise to Mozambique We were very excited for our cruise on the MSC Musica from Durban to Pomene mid February 2019. We were diverted last minute to the Portuguese Islands. Having read a couple of posts from various forums and people, I still had some unanswered questions as to what to expect and what to take along. I decided to post some here. 1. Don't buy the water vouchers, it's expensive and water are always available in the buffet area. 2. I regret having bought drinks vouchers. Despite the 15% saving upfront, I don't think it's worth it. It definitely would've worked out cheaper if we just bought drinks on the ship and charged it to our room. We ended up coming back with bottles of wine and tins of soda not used on the ship (most expensive drinks ever). 3. We spoke to a couple of people who carried on alcohol in their suitcases, doesn't sound like all suitcases are searched.... 4. On-boarding was painless and not such a long wait as we expected. No need to pay for priority boarding. 5. Our ship was diverted from Pomene to the Portuguese Islands due to weather conditions. There are lots of shade and fairly comfortable chairs to laze around. No need to book a lounger and umbrella, although it was nice to have a seperate spot where you could sleep. Decide for yourself if $23 per person is worth it (my personal opinion is the exclusive lounger isn't worth it for $10 more). 6. Put lots of sunscreen. If you think you've put enough, just put some more. Motion sickness, sunburn and sunstroke together is a bad combination! 7. You can get complimentary motion sickness tablets on the boat! Just ask at reception. 8. Don't bargain on a captains dinner, we never had one. And your tuxedo / evening wear will come back unused. Dress throughout the cruise was casual, although some people still dressed up every night. 9. The gym is small and very busy! Be there well before they open and prepare yourself to wait for equipment. 10. Shopping (duty free) on board is real. Save up! The perfume was almost 40% cheaper than in South Africa! There are different savings every day on everything from jewelry to perfume to handbags. Read Less

The food was excellent but our waiter was very slow. We ended up leaving almost last every evening. The shows in the theater was very good and we enjoyed all the shows. The entertainment in the bars also met our expectations. Service overall was excellent and nothing was to much for the crew. They did their best to accommodate all our requests. I'ts a pity that we never got to Pomene due to poor weather. Many guests complained that in up to 7 cruises to Pomene, they are yet to reach the destination. 7 out of 7 times the weather did not play along. - Maybe you should consider scrapping Pomene, People pay for the trip and never get there - Must be a huge saving for MSC. Embarkation was a breeze once we arrived at the port. All staff were courteous and very helpful. Easy to find where to go and what to do. Disembarkation a little more strenuous. The immigration officials were showed that the saying "No Rush in Africa" really is true. Traffic getting to and from the Port was a nightmare. A plan needs to be made to make it easier. A possible thought is to make the embarkation time one hour later. Dinners in the main dining room were great. No pushing and shoving. The service and food were great. Other meals were less pleasant at some stages. The fear of food running out may have had something to do with it. I got the feeling that there was a sense of entitlement and sometimes the lack of consideration for others was a real problem. Staying on the boat while everyone went to the island was great with a smaller crowd and much less noise. Shows were great. Toilets were sometimes a problem due to inconsiderate passengers and numbers. Cabins were great and well maintained. Read Less

Having cruised on MSC for over 10 years and being a Gold Club member, this cruise was way below the standard I have come to expect. I had hoped that I would have experienced the same hospitality that I experienced since my first experience on the Melody and not the poor hospitality that we received on the Musica. 1) This was the 2nd year in a row that we had booked a trip to Pomene, only to be told after boarding that we will not be visiting the Island due to poor weather conditions. I do understand that no one has control over the weather, but it really is disappointing that this happened twice. We paid for a trip to Pomene but was not offered any discounts on future bookings or a reduction in the price that we had paid both times. 2) This was the 1st time that we had dinner at the 2nd seating. We had requested 1st seating but was told that it was full. Surely senior citizens should be given priority for 1st seating, just like children are. We were seated at 8:30pm and placed our order by 8:45pm. We were only served dinner at 9:30pm. This took unusually long, something we never experienced previously. Based on this poor service, we did not return to the restaurant for dinner and opted for the buffet for the remainder of the evenings. 3) The public toilets (deck 13) were not cleaned regularly and there was no toilet paper at times. 4) At the hot beverage station, there was very poor service. There was no boiling water available, but only hot water, which is unsuitable to make tea. There was always a shortage of teabags. This was only filled when requested. Hot milk was not always available. Read Less

Amazing experience for our Family Holiday. The Ship was clean and tidy at all times, Housekeeping staff were friendly and always greeted. The Entertainment Crew was nothing short of amazing and fun. My 8 year old attended the Kids Club where he was greet with hugs and fun activities by all staff - Sizwe and Charlie are exceptional Kids Club crew members. Onboard activities on the pool deck were fun to join in or just to watch. The disembarkation to the Island and on return home was a breeze. Cabin was suitable for our family of 3. The Buffet restaurants had something for everyone all day. All staff encountered along the 4 days were pleasant and friendly. The bar and seating set up on the Island was a huge improvement from our last cruise, the food was great. The theatre shows were entertaining and enjoyed by all. My son absolutely loved the Pool Deck Ice-Cream. The Restaurants and Bars were kept clean at all times, even with the amount of people coming and going all day. We will definitely cruise with MSC again! Read Less

This was my 8th cruise and defenitley the worst cruise! 1. Very poor Safety drill, was done in 2 minutes. Crew only showed how to fasten lifejackets. 2. When we asked for help from cabin steward at 16H00 after bording he said that he cant help till after 6 as he is bussy with lugage. 3. We tried to phone help desk but the phone was not working. I eventualy found out the 9 button on phone had to be pressed verry hard and to hold it in for a few seconds til it dail. We reported it but as per technision this was acceptable an didnt do anything to fix the problem. 4. When we went to eat the problems realy started. I had to firstly at every meal clean old food from my wet plate! And still after complaining about it nothing was done! 5. At every meal we had to ask for butter and the response was that there was not butter as there was delivery issues! They eventualy bring butter to our table after our food was cold or finnished. 6. This was the dirtiest cruise ship of all your MSC ships that I cruised on. Lounge Chairs with very old stains and arm rests with old brown fatty marks only clean where the previos passangers hands pressed to stand up. 7. Entertainment at shows after evening meals was repettitve, the same 4 entertainers with the same preformence only different theme... 8. No smoking areas on deck was a big dissipointment. We had to ask several people to not smoke and had to show them the no smoking signs. This caused very tense moments. Please make it clear to all passangers and ask crew to when they walk pass pasanges that is smoking in no smoke areas to address them. So that we dont have to! 9. Our nice view from our balcony was ruined as the lifeboat below my cabin was used as an ashtray. And the stompies was roling around on the roof of the lifeboat. Must be up to a 100 stompies seems like an astray was emptied from a balcony. We also reported this several times on our 5 day stay. Nothing was done! Very dissipointed in MSC as I realy looked forward to cruise with you but this standard of cruise will ensure that I never recomend MSC as a fantastic holiday cruise to all my family and friends. And the photos of a very dirty ship can not be placed on my sosial media as I am to ashamed to show that I cruised on a very dirty MSC Musica! Read Less
