We almost missed our cruise due to traffic we encountered on the way to the harbor! I will definitely recommend you stay in Durban the night before the cruise so that you don’t have to do much traveling on the day of embarking! When we got to the harbor we did not have any problems checking into the cruise and passing through customs! We were a bit sure where to park and where to go but the assistant in car parkinglot assisted us! Finally we are in the que for Embarkation, once we passed through , we didn’t really know where to go and what to do, so we asked around and then they said we need to go to our cabin and get our cruise cards. There was sufficient food onboard! From breakfast to dinner , they always made sure they had something for everyone, always an alternative if you don’t like fish! They had a variety of entertainment to keep you occupied on wet and rainy days! From art - to quizzes! We received top class service all the time! Waiters in the restaurant were polite and very professional! I was sick the one evening and did not eat much , the next day when the waiter saw me he asked how I was feeling? Did not think that they would remember a passenger! We had a seemless disembarkation , everything was in place and we just needed to follow instructions! We did not get to go on any shore excursions as the weather did not allow us to! When I got sea sick , my husband went to the Doctor and she gave him medication that had me feeling better in an hour! The meds I took along did not help at all! We will definitely go again , we are already looking at the different trips available from MSC to see what will suit us best! Read Less

It was our first cruise, not only for us as a couple, but for us as a family. Unfortunately, the first, and the last... I will start with the good first... The servers in the Galeone Dining facility was fabulous! Always had a smile and a joke for the kids, probably the highlight of our trip. We visited the kiddies entertainment/play areas. At first we were told that we would have to separate our children as they are 5 and almost 3 (1 week away). After much deliberation we were then told that they were closing at 15h30 and had to leave. The next day we went back and were told that it was time for parents to stay with the kids - whats the use? We were also refused access at the older facility - ages being 7 and up... Not once did our kids leave our side, but it was probably for the best. My 5 year old and I also had terrible motion sickness on the friday and went past the medical centre on the saturday morning, only to be told that it was $95 consultation excluding the injections before they even looked at us - per person! That might fly for overseas travelers but for South Africans thats just ridiculous. And just fyi, the motion sickness bags that you provided, was all finished and no where to be found by the Saturday morning. We only got on the ship on Friday? As for the embarkation, we stood in the queue for almost 3 hours - have you tried to keep children standing quietly for 3 hours? Some people with kids were called forward, whilst others (without children and not elderly) just didnt bother to stand in the last queue - SHOCKING. The staff just let them walk by, and there we stood, like sheep, trying to keep tired, cold, hungry children at bay.... All in all I must say this was probably once of the worst experiences I have ever gone through with my family, and now that its done, can tell you we will never do it again. Bet you this review wont see the light of day or even get a response! Read Less

We had done a family cruise in 2007, a cruise with friends in 2014 and this time around it was just my wife and I. No one to slow us down or dampen the party mood so we enjoyed this cruise like a second honeymoon. The service and meals at the restaurants was awesome and the staff across all departments were pleasant and delivered on everything. Retail therapy was a pleasant experience with some really good bargains in the alcohol and perfume departments.I managed to get gifts for my two sons as well as my family. I would like to recommend that the photographic department take advantage of technology as printing the photos is not an ideal digital advantage. Photos could be displayed on all display screens throughout the ship and based on your cabin number you can book your photos and packages and then add it to your basket, this will enable the cost to be more decent and less wastage of printing thousands of photos that end up getting destroyed as costs currently are stupendous. The Gospel was the highlight of the cruise... I enjoyed the Gospel from day 1 until the end. There is a lot that can be done to minimize standing while waiting to board aship... The waiting was a challenge, especially for the elderly. The queues were looooooong. The food at the restaurant was not up to standard, hence we only ate there on the first night. The buffet at 11th Floor was da bomb and the variety of food it presented made our stay enjoyable.... As for the gym and the spar as well as the photographs that were taken aboard... I would have expected that such is included in the price... as bulk of the times it becomes a bit expensive to get to know after a nice pose that these photos must be paid for. An option could be done at ticket sales where one can elect to have the price of photos and attendance to gym and spa included... The pool deck was daaa bomb...... Read Less

Being a fan of the MSC offerings, I will certainly continue to recommend this experience for a soothing; relaxed; no stress vacation - to ANYONE! The booking process is done way ahead of departure and enables detailed planning and guarantees delivery of additional services in a smooth manner. The dining experience was highlighted by the amazing staff who truly show hospitality. However, the quality of dinner escalated to above average only by night 3,pity as this could have been a star point! I have mixed emotions regarding the employment of SA youth/young adults on the Sinfonia this time around - Huge thumbs up for the creation of employment to MSC; however I found the attitude and service of locals paled in comparison to your international staff. Perhaps it is an adjustment phase or an inherent problem - either way - Train! Train! Train! All that lacks is a pleasant deameanour and the ability to smile - crucial for any hospitality employee! Overall - a recommended vacation must do! Read Less

1st thing that was very well organised, was the embarkation process. I was pleasantly surprised, as to how quick and smooth it was. Something that could be improved, was for more staff to be on hand to assist with elderly people. We had a 94 year old lady in our group and it was difficult finding someone to assist her. I know that we tried to late, prior to the cruise, to make arrangements for assistance. Never the less, we found everything else to have been just perfect. From the entertainment to dining and excursions lived up to our expectations. Some other issue that could also be addressed, is for better signage or explanations as to how to get to cabins. Although it took us only the 1st day to find our way around the boat, I noticed that some people were still battling on the last day to get their way around the decks. I found that most people would go up to the upper deck 11, walk across to the other end of the ship and then down to their required floor. Very well done and many thanks to MSC for and excellent overall cruise. Read Less

Ship experience: Wonderful experience, out of this world. Something that one has to do in their lifetime. Cleanliness: The cleaning company needs to up their game. There are people in the ship and public toilets needs to be cleaned every 20 minute and it was not the cas with MSC Sinfonia. There was a bad smell on the passage and around the casino area. The public toilets was my nightmare! The buffet area needs major cleaning, I saw cockroaches dishing up food. Entertainment: I loved the night shows they were beautiful, great performance every night. Shore excursions: The islands were beautiful. Glad that that we managed to visit all the islands. Food: The breakfast menu needs improvement. However, your some of your waiters have a bad attitude. Dinner was fine, loved the different themes and we had a greater waiter by the name of Damarhan. The 15% service fee it is way too much! I would definitely do it again with my mother and sister. Hopefully all the issues raised will have been resolved and service improved. Read Less

Excellent value for money holiday. Yes we were blessed with perfect weather but even if weather had been rainy there is still plenty to do on board and plenty of space for rest and relaxation. The service staff are excellent considering that there are 2000 guests on board. Very efficient hospitality. The excursions to Portuguese Island and Pomene were great experiences. Activities on board were plentiful and there was something for everyone. evening shows were excellent and the day activities on deck were fun for those who took part as well as for those who just watched! The kids appeared to be well looked after. Only negatives were the cost of photographs that were taken on board (take a decent camera and then there is no need to purchase any of their photos) and the state of the Dbn Terminal. Drinks can be a little expensive so recommendation is to purchase drinks vouchers. Highly recommended. Read Less

My Fiancé and myself had our symbolic wedding on the cruise which was hassle and stress free and absolutely out of this world! We wouldn't have wanted it any other way. But besides for that part of our trip, everything was just out of this world. - Great constant food - Highly organised when it came to the excursions and entertainment. But even more so when it came to the shore excursions. the transfers to the islands worked really well. - Great personalised service at our sit down dinners (first sitting) and even when we couldn't make it to the first sitting, they made a plan for us - Remarkably friendly, helpful crew - Great cabins and use of space in the cabins considering the small amount of time you spend in them - Fantastic entertainment - we never got bored for a second - Totally amazed by the different baby/junior/teen clubs on offer - Beautiful ship, nice and clean, great use of areas/space, lovely décor. Each section of the ship has its own 'feel'. - GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY The only disappointing point that I have is the price of the photographs. Such effort put into taking the photographs and having them printed but just with an astronomical price - we were forced to leave most of our pictures behind due to price. We will do it all over again in a heart beat! Read Less

I wanted to celebrate my 80th birthday in style, and my son offered to pay for my cruise etc. The cruise was fantastic, and well organised by MSC staff. I also enjoyed the excursions to the Portuguese Island and Pomene, which were once again so well organised and everything worked smoothly. My one concern about the Island excursions is that you do not leave the left-over food for the local inhabitants. Very disappointed with this. Secondly, I loved the SHOWS they were magnificent as well as the outdoor activities. I am more than happy that I won the QUEEN OF THE SEA title!! Thank you to the organisers and thanks for the lovely gifts. ONE very sad incident to report is that my cosmetic bag, containing most of my lovely costume jewellery, went "missing in action" on the last night of the cruise. Read Less

The cruise took us to a new Island not known to us. We do this on a regularly basis and enjoy the cruises with other friends. Embarkation was not well organised as passport control and the holding area before escorted to the ship was insufficient and not well managed. In general disembarkation went well, except for the luggage was not properly placed (no walking space between suitcases). The ship is well maintained and clean. We had a negative experience as our booked cabin was changed without us being timeously informed, leaving us struggling to obtain cruise cards and moving our luggage, while the ship left Durban harbour. Entertainment and activities presented were of good quality and enjoyable. Dining was excellent as food was well prepared and service at restaurants was good. Excursions was well organised and executed with friendly and very helpful staff members. It was noted that there were less waiters and therefore service was almost non existing on Deck 11. In general me noticed that there were less staff members as on previous cruises. Read Less

We chose the cruise primarily due to Proflight flying direct from Lusaka to Durban which fitted in with the cruise dates. We were looking for the on-board cruise experience rather than the destination. Overall the experience was good as regards the cabin (compact but comfortable) entertainment and facilities generally. Bar service was poor due to the huge demand for time consuming cocktails and there should have been separate service facilities for beer, wine and softies drinkers to avoid these cocktail queues. The pools, spa bath and gym were nice and quiet when the ship docked for the Portugese Island excursion which did not really attract us. The food and ambiance in the Restaurant was quite good although not gourmet quality but that's not unexpected with mass catering but the food in the buffet which we only used twice was uninspiring. The Drinks vouchers made it quicker and easier to buy wine by the glass and the most expensive white wine by the glass (can't remember the name) as good. There were three theatre shows. The first was good the second excellent and the third (London Calling) a bit of a let down. The trip was theamed as Sokke Sokke so very geared to Africaas. But that was fine we made some friends and enjoyed the deck concert even if we did not know the words to a lot of the songs being Zambian residents. Read Less

I have cruised with MSC for many years. Yes they have change a lot off things to make the Embarkation easer and faster but still needs some improvement. We had easy on board. The desk with the 3 ladies helping you was a bit slow and thy struggle with the papers and marking off the people for easy on board. Mabey two counters will be better? From there it was easy through security and immigration. But then you hit the line for the photo in front off the ship. What a line! Why not make I line for people that wonts to take a picture and one for people just to pass by if you do not wont the photo taken. If you pass that photo session it was easy and fast again. We stayed in cabin 1225 on deck 12. Cabin was ready by 13:00 and we collected you cruise cards. Luggage was in front of the room around 15:30. The two chair out side on the balcony was a bid behind it us by date and needs a lot of attention. It lining of the chairs was coming loos and it was not nice to sit on them. Dining on deck 6 in II Cove was to standard and food was good as well as the service. We had breakfast on deck 5 in II Galeone but the service there was not up to standard you had to wait on someone to bring you coffee and the tables was not set after the people left. No butter on the table you had to ask for it. So MSC really needs to give attention to this. At Lunch there was just not enough waiters on the deck to serve every one and you hade to wait long times for someone to get you a drink if you get someone. Same in Manhaton Bar, just not enough waiters to help everyone. Entertainment was not on the same standard as that we have experience when Steven was the cruise director. You can just see that he is not there. The "Afrikaanse Sokkie" was also not nice organic as they tried to hold one so on the deck next to the swimming pool. There was just not enough space for everyone. Not a good experience, why not put a camera and show the stage on the big screen so everyone can at lees see the stage??? Then there is the Shelagh pub with the smokers. Can you please put a door or something the to keep the some inside. If you walk past there you can just smell smoke out side the pub and that is not nice to someone not smoking. Especially at night if you go down from 12 to 5 as this is the elevator the closes to you. The child swimming area needs some attention as not all the water nozzles and spouts work on there play area. Overhaul the service on the ship was not bad just not enough waiters to help all the people with drinks on the bar an deck areas. Disembarkation was fast and easy no problems at all. Read Less

This was my first cruise and the saying goes ' The first impression last longer'. We departed from Durban which is my home town. I was amazed at how quickly we went through immigration and embarkation. We got onto the ship and was amazed by the friendliness of the staff and the size of the ship. Its a proper floating 10 star hotel. We enjoyed lunch on board before we sailed and it was amazing. Our Cabins became available and we went and had a look. We had the inside cabin and believe me it was perfect.... you only sleep there. The food and drinks through out our trip was amazing and I think I disembarked with a few extra KG's added. Our cruise was the Super Sokkie Cruise and I cannot begin to explain how amazing it was. The staff on board kept us entertained. The amount of respect and friendliness shown by the crew was amazing. We had a blast on the island and the weather was perfect. We didn't travel with the our children however there was plenty for them to do. So they will join us on the next one. In a nutshell ...... My cruise was amazingly awesome epic and that also is an understatement. Words cannot explain the amount of fun we had. MSC will see me again and again. Well done to each and everyone from MSC you guys are amazing!!! Read Less

Overall everything on the ship was good the food, shows, entertainment, Portuguese island and the cleanliness of the cabin was great. The only big critic and concern we had was the bars this is terrible. You stand in a queue with everyone pushing and shoving for over 20 minutes. There are barely any waitresses and only 2 barman this is horrid. There should be kiosks where they only prvide water and coldrinks too. People stand in that queue for ever with kids that are thirsty it is horrid. More barman and more waitresses is definately a must and better order when standing waiting to be served. The entertainment shows were great. We loved the Sokkie Cruise the artists were awesome. The island was fun too. First time we got off and loved it. Overall a good cruise to go on. Cannot fault anything BUT the bar service. Looking forward to our cruise with our 2 kids in December on board the Musica, I am hoping that it will be enjoyable! Read Less

The ship itself is has more than enough to satisfy curious minds - lots to see during exploring expeditions :) The cabin was just perfect, I surely would not have minded a couple of days extra. We only had food from the buffet, and also tried out the pizza (not a lot of variety) and hamburgers and chips that you can eat from all day (and seemingly all night also). The entertainment was awesome. I would have, however, turned the stage around, so that the full length of the ship could be utilized to view the show, rather than everyone cramping in a small space (about a 5th of the ship's length) and being rude to each other because a person can't actually see the stage / show, or people are constantly bumping and pushing while dancing and moving around. Apart from one (very obnoxious) bartender, all staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. While on the subject of bartenders, the queue at the bar was very long on the first day / night - thereafter it was very reasonable. The shore excursion is a definite "must do". Word can not describe ... Thank you MSC for a wonderful break away. I will most certainly be back :) Read Less

I heard prior to our cruise that kids will love it, but this cruise was for my birthday so it was not the reason we booked it. I assumed that there were 'care givers' there to just look after the kids while they keep themselves busy in the Lego Rooms. Boy was I wrong. My son didn't get to bed until after 10 at night, exhausted with a big smile on his face. They did everything from cooking, having dinner with the kids, to putting on shows in the theater. It took me some time for me to settle down and relax because I'm always so use to entertaining him on holidays. I didn't have to do ANYTHING! All I did was sit around and wait to be hungry again so I could have an excuse to go eat hahaha. The food was amazing and everyone was super friendly and helpful. A little disappointed that the excursions we wanted to do had an age restriction. So make sure to read all the information on the excursions before booking. Embarkation and disembarkation was a breeze! I was amazed at how smoothly everything went. You never stood in a line longer than 2 minutes and there was a constant flow until you were done. Only warning I would give on your cruise, is be careful how many photos you pick, or have your heart medication nearby when you decide to take a few photos! $$$$ Read Less

This was the second cruise on the MSC Sinfonia. The first cruise was amazing but this one was terrible. Book a cruise for my family. When i get on board i see there is a company function happening on board. That was not the problem. Almost the entire cruise there was only afrikaans music playing. I think that was unacceptable. Also staff on the ship where unhelpful and service at restaurants was average. Food was good at the sit down restaurants for dinner but other meals where average. I must commend the process when going ashore, very efficient. Entertainment should be for everyone not the majority From the first cruise to now big difference. Advise to Travellers : Ask before booking if there are any functions happening on the Ship. I always book the Balcony Suite, much larger rooms and you don't feel the rough sea's as bad as the lower rooms(my opinion). Read Less

Our MSC cruise to the Portuguese Islands started on the 9 March 2018. Unfortunately we had the unabridged birth certificate for our 5 year old son (an oversight on our part) and were stopped at the pre-check in point. Needless to say we were determined to get on board and after a failed attempt at one of the home affairs offices in DBN, we tried again at another office and finally obtained the Unabridged birth certificate. Alas we reached the check in point 10min after closing and pleaded to board especially after all our troubles. Our plea was heard and a big Thank You to Caycee Oliver and a gentleman at the pre- check in point who assisted with our check in and luggage, we literally ran on board. Needless to say with all the drama we were quite shaken when we finally boarded the ship. Our MSC cruise is something my family and I will remember for a long time to come and we cannot wait to go on the next one. From driving to the parking to checking in, to the facilities, activities and meals on board, everything was exceptional and extremely good value for money. We loved our balcony suite and the amazing sea view. The island visit was well coordinated and as exciting as the on board activities. My husband and I both come from Technical environments in our working and this results in probably higher expectations than normal. Our cruise exceeded even our highest expectations. MSC Cruises have managed to fine tune every part of the process from check in to disembarking to minute detail leaving us passengers in awe of the amazing experience this results in. I have been recommending the cruise ever since I got back.We cannot thank Caycee and her colleague enough for going the extra mile for us. Read Less

We love our Afrikaans local singers and thought, what better way to meet them and enjoy their music, than on a local cruise. The entire experience blew our minds away. We had great expectations and excitement of little kids. Our first cruise. The fellow passengers were friendly and in the same excitement mode as us. From the embarkation process right to the disembarkation, it felt like a reunion with old friends and family. We did not feel like strangers at all. Just after boarding we went to enjoy our first meal of the day. The staff, the food, the company, the dining area - unbelievably fantastic. Our expectations were exceeded by far. Couldn't believe that it could be possible. Going to our cabins - wow! As a family we were in awe. Could not wait to explore what the Sinfonia had more to offer. I must say, the staff - all over, were extremely friendly and helpful. What a delight! The cabin service was excellent, so clean and hygienic. No complaints. The entertainment; well we were exhausted after the cruise, because the entertainment was superb. We did not want to sleep, because there was sooo much to do - and we did not want to miss out on anything. We were also very impressed with the staff constantly cleaning - even on the pool deck. We had our 15 year old daughter with us, and even she had a blast! We were thrilled that she was safe on the vessel and no need for any paranoia around her safety. We made awesome friends and honestly can't wait for our next Super Sokkie Cruise 2019. It almost feels unfair to single out one single staff member. They were all absolutely amazing and we have great respect for all their extraordinary efforts to make it special for each passenger. One small suggestion - to have more staff at the pool deck pub and ice cream bar. Read Less

I love traveling, adventure and having fun. Embarkation was really amazing, we came late and the crew managed to wait for us for an extra hour and I'm still grateful for that. When we entered the ship it was soo big and beautiful. We got a little motion sickness and it made us feel dizzy so we decided to go lie down but eventually mastered it and we were walking like pro's. Our cabin was amazing, it had a window aka an amzing view of the ocean. As for dining the buffet food was delicious and the deserts were also really great. Entertainment was really on a 'out of this world fun' we partied every night, played games and answered quizzes. We watched performances and our minds were blown, it was more than we expected, Karaoke night was nice and I got to make new friends. We only went to Portuguese Island and it was really nice but super hot. The weather wasn't good enough for Pomene. Disembarkation was really nice, we got to have our passports stamped, yaaay. Last but not least was your service, it really was amazin, if I could personally tip the crew members I would. I'd definitley want to go again, I'm sure you'll receive a second review from me.
