We chose this cruise as it was a new company to New Zealand. What made our trip was the entertainment, which was world class. Also the piano player Ronaldo Raz, just made our days as we listened to him playing and singing, just fabulous. We got to as many of his gigs as we could as It was so enjoyable, also it was world class. Food mediocre, beds very hard, which made them uncomfortable., we all had painful backs each night to contend with. Why put folk that ask for a wheelchair to come onto the ship and disembark in the cabin we got, we had to walk to the lift to deck seven, then walk the length of the ship to go down to deck 6 for our meals. This does not show on the deck plan at all,we were the last cabin on deck 6 which showed that we could walk straight into the restaurant , or so we thought. We did go to the quiz days, which we have loved on other ships, but sorry to say could not understand what they were saying to join in, a language problem. Read Less

I was actually looking for a 12+ night cruise and I chose this cruise as it was going around New Zealand. I have travelled a fair bit of New Zealand by land and thought it would be nice to see some of the hard to get to places from the sea i.e. Gisborne, Dunedin, Milford. This was a re positioning cruise to Sydney. It was a 7 night cruise and I saw the following cruise went around Tasmania, so I booked that as well. This gave us a 14 night cruise. We booked an Oceanview cabin on deck 5 mid. This was a good location as there was minimal roll and very handy for disembarking at ports. We made a point of always using the stairs (mostly), this was a good way to offset all the good food we were consuming. Speaking of food, we mostly ate in the Dream Dining room where the food was great! A good selection with choices to satisfy choosy palates. OMG the entertainment was amazing! We had heard the entertainment was a must see and we weren't disappointed. We made sure we saw a show every night! Explorer Dream is a nice clean ship. The crew are always cleaning and polishing. The crew were possibly what topped the whole experience. Very friendly and always willing to help. no request was too small or too hard. Anything you want, they will get it for you if they can. A must see for me was the Captains Bridge. This is a gem. This is a room accessed from deck 12 front lounge via a spiral stair case. This gives anyone a 24 x 7 view into the Bridge! I did a Bridge tour for more detail too. A would definitely sail with Explorer Dream again. Read Less

We found the cruise prefect for our extended family of 9. We ranged in age from 10 to 80 and everyone found the cruise very enjoyable. The helpfulness and good humor of the onboard staff cannot be over emphasised. They were very friendly and never too busy to help out. The general mood on the cruise was very pleasant until we arrived in Auckland and a whole bunch of very complainy older Australians came onboard. Nothing the crew did seemed to be good enough for them and we were repeatedly embarrassed by their que jumping and general rudeness toward the onboard staff who continued to try to cater to thier needs. The variety of food onboard was very good and at all times, well prepared. We tried all of the onboard restaurants and found the food very nice in each. The quality of the onboard shows was extremely high and the performers were as good as any that can be seen anywhere in the world, most impressive. Generally a most enjoyable experience that we will be looking forward to repeating in the near future. Read Less

This was our second 7 night cruise on board as we did the Sydney to Auckland 7 night cruise late last year. We are dismayed at some of the reviews in here , but each o their own I guess. Both cruises we enjoyed and we are seasoned cruisers and cruised all over the world. Some some degree you get what you pay for , but people need to remember this is not a standard western ship . It was built for the Asian market and is a ex Star Cruise ship (which is one of the many cruise lines we have sailed with in the past). Built also for very short cruises , hence small cabins. Given the above we found it worth every cent (and it does not cost many), The entertainment some of the best at sea any where in the world. We found the "included" restaurants gave us all we wanted and staff tried hard to please , yes we have had better , but we have had a lot worse. Great value for what we paid . Read Less

Took this cruise to tour round the coast of New Zealand. Barely saw the coast except when going in to port. Food was great. Staff were great. Would like to see more flexibility for breakfast. Cut off was way to early at 9-30 (clearing at 9-15) especially if you have a young family or you are at sea for 2 days. 10 would be far better clearing at 10 not 9-45! Expect fruit juice to be freely available also free beverages all day. Lack flexibility. Wine selection was very limited a total of 5. Totally inadequate for the western palate. Shows and parties were way to short at 45 minutes, just getting started. More films required and in the Zodiac theatre which was way underutilised most of the time. Especially when you are at sea for the day. Films in the Piazza were very distracting with people walking through. Account for the room should be set up prior to cruise on a credit card which is then automatically deducted. Hassle settling the account at the end of the cruise. Excursions ashore well organised. Description of the sounds disappointing obviously did not know very much about them and did not last for long. Again commentary on previous cruises taken was excellent. Need to employ some western management to meet western expectations. Unless I knew they had upped their game I wouldn't go again with this cruise line. Read Less

To be honest, we chose this ship for the price of the cruise (circumnavigating NZ) and the beautiful decor shown in photos. We were not disappointed! The decor is top quality - everything on the ship is the very best. Some may complain that some carpets were not replaced in the recent refurbishment but then some people have to find fault with everything! Best cruise we have ever experienced. Loved every minute and would go again tomorrow! We ate in the 'Dream Dining' room for every meal. Great food and the waiters very professional. All staff were great. There was a big choice of restaurants . The Zodiac theatre - huge! The entertainment, as good as any in Las Vegas. Huge casino! Embarkation and disembarkation quick and flawless. Fire drill well organized as was the organization of everything on the ship. Many spa pools and plus the large ones and a decent sized water slide. Bars and BBQ close by. We were able to walk around the entire outside of the ship - good for photos, especially in the 'Sounds'. I would give the cruise 91/2 out of 10. The other half taken off because of the lack of NZ news on the TV - all Australian (as is the currency used). Also, broadcasts were difficult to understand re the accents and sound volume. Daily newspapers were very informative. **If you have a bad back - take an inflatable support cushion as not one seat on the ship has anything but a straight back - with no support. The ship is fast at 25 knots full speed - to get around NZ in 7 nights, a lot of the shore excursions were necessarily quite short. For example if you can catch the first tender off at 9am (need to buy tender tickets the day before) the last tender leaves the shore at 12.30pm. It wasn't possible - apart from Bay of Islands stop to have time for a worthwhile paid excursion. People complain about the price of the drinks package. BYO - we did in our luggage - which was not checked at any stage! :) Strangely - being school holidays, there were very few children to be seen anywhere. We are two sisters on the wrong side of 50! Treat yourself to cruise on this beautiful ship. Read Less

After 3 years since having been on its inaugural sailing, I went with the family on a 2 night cruise out of Singapore to Bintan Island (Actually more of a gambling cruise then for the ports). Stayed in the Palace Suites once again and service has improved vastly. Upon embarkation, we were escorted from the cruise terminal through security all the way up to our cabin. This is was done by the event hostess of Resorts World group. Butlers were great, didn't use them much on this short cruise. Entertainment on board the ship was disappointingly HEAVILY catered towards the Indian demographic. The theatre show called 'Sonic' was quite impressive with acrobatics and cool stunts. Also Zouk was closed the 2nd night of sailing to host an only Bollywood themed party which was by invite or purchase tickets at the front. Didn't like that exclusivity for the Indians and lack for other races. This sailing also coincided with a Justice League themed sailing, where Justice League merchandise were on sale in shops, and decorated throughout the entire ship. It made for a good touch to appeal to families and children. Food was generally good, a significant improvement from the inaugural where we would feel that portions were too small, and free food ran out very fast on board. Portions were much better, eating at Silk Road (complimentary for Palace Suite guests). The Japanese Bento restaurant on Deck 8 was good as well, not fabulous though. However what was really the highlight was the Hotpot restaurant al fresco seating by the aft of the ship. Beautiful views of the sea going past while watching the sunset and eating good hot pot. This ship IS a gambling ship, the Casino smells of smoke and its a very strong stench be forewarned. Thats the only thing i didn't enjoy in the public venues. Also we were sailing at 4000+ pax at the time, seating in public venues were often insufficient with us needing to sit down and reserve seats for family members. This made it slightly less pleasant of an experience. Because this was a 2 night that sailed to Bintan Island (Indonesia), we decided not to get off at while tendered. It seemed like barely anybody had gotten off at Bintan, which was interesting because there were a lot of Indian families on vacation. Read Less

1. Entertainment and Activities: Excellent evening shows of high standards. Amazing staging and costumes. Plenty of daytime activities to suit all tastes. Needs a quiet area to relax away from other activities - the designated Palm Court lounge was always busy. Note singer Wesley claimed he was an ex Commodore not from the Stylistics as noted in other reviews. 2. Dining. Disappointing. Only two western food outlets ( restaurant and pizzeria). Meals lacking vegetables and very small portions served on oversized plates. Western food cooking techniques need improvement. All other restaurants Asian and at additional cost. The Lido deck buffet selection was poor, more Asian based, although free. Free fruit drinks were powder-based. Fresh fruit drinks, carbonated drinks, and alcohol incurred an additional charge of 18% plus GST of 15%. This is on top of an inclusive gratuities charge paid with your fare. Who's profiting? 3. Service. Excellent most of the time. A few exceptions include some alcohol and food service. 4. Cabin. Clean and tidy although dated. The steward could not have been more helpful. 5. Ports. The time allowed in ports was extremely limited. Visits starting at very early mornings (amenities not open) and leaving early afternoon. Not acceptable. 6. Overall. Embarkation and disembarkation smooth. This company needs to up its game for Western customers or other cruise lines will benefit. Read Less

We went on the Explorer Dream Christmas cruise around New Zealand. We were attracted to it because it looked different and made an early booking. Then as reviews rolled in about the initial cruise to and around Australia we grew apprehensive. We needn't have, we thoroughly enjoyed the week. Highlights included the excellent service and friendliness provided by the crew from restaurant staff to the front office team, ticket office, casino staff and our cabin steward. The staff were most concerned about my wife having to spend a day in bed after a rocky trip around north cape, and offered a range of treatments. That storm was nothing to do with the ship, it could have happened anywhere and the bridge did what they could to avoid the worst of it (a tip, try not to book a forward cabin as high as the 11th floor where we were, the ship's motion is accentuated running into a storm) The second highlight was the shows, we attended all we could and they should not be missed. Thirdly the food was good in all the venues we attended, the Lido buffet, Dream Restaurant, the Pavilion (highly recommended Chinese), and we didn't mind paying for the Mark Best seafood platter, Teppanyaki and Blue Lagoon (very good value). And of course our visit to Milford and Doubtful Sounds was a highlight. Dream Cruises have obviously responded to criticism received about earlier cruises. An example, disembarking in Wellington was reported to be chaotic on the first visit. For our cruise a system of ticketing was introduced which worked very well. No delays at all, nor were there with embarking and disembarking in Auckland. "Cons" might be the short time in some ports which limited what you could do. Also the cabin we had, while very comfortable in the main, you could tell where the makeover started and stopped eg the tiles over the bathroom basin were about to fall off the wall. Also while we willingly paid the "compulsory" gratuities for the crew's sake, Dream Cruises need to recognise Kiwis like Aussies don't like paying these and its policy should be the same for all Australasian cruises. It currently isn't. We found the "classic" drinks package was good value, although the range of wines hopefully will include more NZ ones in the future. Overall a most enjoyable trip, thank you to the crew of the Dream Explorer! Read Less

This cruise is a mixture of good and bad experiences. Disembarkation at different ports was poorly organised as we did not get of the ship until 2-3 hours after the ship docked and disembarkation started. We found it very hard to make our needs understood by the front desk staff as they did not understand English very well. Buffet food was very average and not varied at all. Our cabin was not as we ordered or told it would be. We ordered a queen size bed, and were assured that was what we would get, but ended up with 2 single beds with a large support pole between them, meaning they could not be pushed together to make one large bed. Very disapointiong. (See cabin report below). On a favorable note, the shows in the Zodiac Theatre in the evenings, were outstanding. (Best we have ever seen on cruise ships). Cabin staff were also very helpful and attentive. The dining room staff were helpful and eager to please. Read Less

Choose cruise on price and destination Layout, size of the ship, staff, entertainment and food excellent. Embarking at Whites Bay was a nightmare as we were relying on public transport. Decided to use Captain Cook ferry and continued on the long walk to the terminal. No time was wasted on embarkation, whole process maybe 15 minutes. Cabin excellent level 5 close to lifts. Spacious shower. Disappointed the advertising pictures of the inviting back pool area, and surrounds with dinning areas are only available to Palace customers who were no where to be seen. Like many other ships they have returned to tiered class ships. The service charge of 18% plus 10% GST + gratuities, choice of 10 extra food outlets all with price tag has taken away what cruising was all about. A beer started out $7 end cost $9 a bottle. Shuttle into Brisbane $35, we were to be docked up the river but ended up in the cargo port We have clocked up 28 cruises and feel now they are just money making machines on water. Read Less

We liked the itinerary and were keen to discover a new ship. Our initial impression of the ship was it was well refurbished although the cabins were small they were well laid out and had plenty of storage. We had a balcony cabin which had a kettle and a fridge which both came in handy during our voyage. The cabins were well serviced in line with other cruise ships. There are lots of restaurants on board that you pay extra for. We were happy with the buffett and main dining room and only ate at the blue lagoon restaurant on one night. The price of the drinks and coffees and cakes were very reasonable. The size of the ship was great and we were able to find our way around very quickly. The staff were very attentive and helpful although many needed to practice their English a bit more. We would comfortably go on the ship again if the itinerary was to our liking. It was great to see the other passengers who were well into their 70s and 80s enjoying all the facilities including the water slide spaAnd swimming pool. We didn’t go to the shows however the feedback was very positive. Definitely targeted towards the over 60 cruiser. We would recommend the ship those who had not cruised before all the looking for a relaxing holiday where they could enjoy a few drinks and have a swim in the pool. As this was a re-positioning cruise I am guessing that is why there was very little entertainment on board including music during the day. Read Less

We chose this cruise from Singapore as it visited ports we had not been before. We knew it was a relocation cruise & that it was coming to Sydney for the first time under the new name. We encountered a number of problems with the slowness of service from the drink waiters, the processes they used where we had to sign for everything & the dietary problems we were trying to communicate to the waiters & their supervisors. Two of our group of 5 are Coeliacs - so it is imperative t have a Gluten Free meal which we notified at the time of booking. It was NOT easy!! Nothing was labelled for either GF diets, Vegetarian, Vegan & the like. We spoke to the Head supervisors in both the Lido & the Dream dining rooms & they really tried their best. Each day we felt things were improving, but then someone in our group would be left waiting for their soup whilst the rest of our group had had their main meals!!! This happened more than once. We had a laugh so many times at dinner - small things that went wrong - but we put it down to experience & it did not stop us having a great time. We loved the staff - they were beautiful people. The entertainment on board was fantastic. From the shows in the Zodiac Theatre to the bands in the Palm Court & by the pool. We enjoyed them all. The theme nights were good fun. We never went to the Casino - but we knew that the ship was catering for the wealthy Chinese. We loved the exercise classes, the Trivia got better after the first couple of days....& the Bingo was fun to watch. Even though it was supposed to be refurbished, I think that mainly happened in the Palace Area. The Dream dining room carpet & the level 7 large area need to be replaced. A great fun time was had despite a few inconveniences. Gettting off the ship in Sydney was NOT fun. The poor young staff members that were left to apologise to all of us about the delays were getting abused. A senior member of staff should have been there to cope with the complaints. Read Less

We chose this ship because it had been revamped and visited destinations we hadn't visited before. Firstly we were herded into a tin roof waiting area and then pushed along by some of the most arrogant people I have ever met. There was no organization, no dividers to keep people in line , no water as we advanced on our two hour journey through the first shed into a larger area all the while in extreme heat. We were security checked at least 6 times in the line at different spots. There was total chaos. Once aboard we were offered a refreshing drink and warm welcome. The buffet was our first disappointment, it looked like recycled food. You had to be scanned by your cruise card to enter the buffet as was the case with every entry into the buffet or dining room for a meal. Elderly people forgot their cruise card often and had to return to their cabins to collect. Entertainment was excellent for the first 3 nights but after that they were repeated and the only new show was by a purchased ticket at a cost. The rooms were lovely very adequate for us, a very large window , seperate shower and toilet. Rooms were not usually cleaned in our area until around 2 pm when we would find our Dream News on our bed for that day. Food in the dining room was very nice, well presented , although carpet was filthy, service from Shanghai to Hong Kong terrible, after that it improved. Hardly any English speaking waiters or staff at help desk or pursers desk. There was only exercise classes held in the main forum of the ship right next to the help desk so impossible to hear or talk. The ports were certainly the worst part. we stopped at Hong Kong and due to some problems on the ship we were shuttled into an area at 5 pm and was told the last shuttle back was 5.45 pm or to catch a taxi back. Nha Trang was a highlight , the tour company was very well organized and English speaking. Ho Chi Minh City , we caught a shuttle bus to the port gate and then told we had to catch a taxi into Ho Chi Minh about an hour and half away. Had we got our News the previous day we could have caught a bus in, but all tours were extremely expensive. Nha Trang cost $137 each for the day.We then departed the ship in Singapore. Our passports were confiscated for the whole duration of the cruise , this is a very dangerous practice as if anyone should miss the ship due to unforseen circumstances they would have had no way of getting out the country let alone boarding a plane to meet the ship at the next port. This is my 28 th cruise and without a doubt my 1st and last with this cruise line. So many people wanted to cancel drink packages when they realized they were charged $90 a day and there was only two drink waiters we saw each evening for the entire dining room. Chinese people were given special treatment during dinner time, allowed to bring in alcohol in boxes, had food bought in from the speciality resturant . There was only one Australian wine and one NZ wine listed and the second night they did not have the Australian wine left. Service was so slow we walked out without breakfast after 50 minutes, and another night they forgot our meals altogether. One morning a breakfast was put in front of a passenger and after about 5 minutes when they realized it was the wrong meal , the waitress picked it up and then put it at another table, fortunately the lady had seen this and refused the meal. There was no bin near the toilet door so you could use a paper to open the door , nor sanitizer. a very large group had a meeting with the purser and demanded their gratuities refunded, when I asked I was told I booked through an agent so couldn' have it refunded. I had booked my cruise direct with the company. Read Less

Our inside stateroom was very comfortable. We had tea and coffee making facilities along with a fridge. Our room was serviced daily and kept clean, with fresh towels and linen provided. We loved hanging out in the Palm Court, relaxing and enjoying a drink and a chat with the staff and other travellers. There were many inside and outside areas to visit and enjoy. The pool area was beautiful. We had many enjoyable experiences with cruise staff. We went to as many of the shows as possible. They were of the highest standard with world class acts. We also enjoyed the many other musical and other activities available. We had a wonderful time and would thoroughly recommend Explorer Dream to our friends and family. Read Less

Just did a 6 days Hong Kong Vietnam Cruise, 2 adults with kids 9 and 11. It was our second cruise. Very glad we choose the PALACE SUITE upgrade, and this particular World Dream cruise-ship. The room is fantastic with a huge bathroom, much storage and an easy-to-fold down sleeper for the kids while the ship is less then a year old having cost almost a billion USD (build in Germany). The Palace VIP upgrade comes with many perks, e.g.: • Personal butler for your room available 6 x 15 hours. Can call her/him from anywhere on the ship to sort out small issues/make bookings/a lost bag/etc. • access to the VIP/PALACE area which covers about 1/3rd of the ship in the front. There are 4 spa pools, two hot and two cold also in this area and there is no shortage of service around the pool area with drinks replenished on a regular basis. The Zook beach club is a neat area and they hold lively parties there at night, a bit like being in a top beach side night club.
