After enjoying a wonderful cruise on the Queen Mary 2 in 2010 our special anniversary cruise on the QM2 was a huge disappointment and we wanted to get off 4 days into a 14 day cruise! We had more complaints about the cruise but the 3 major areas that Cunard need to address urgently are: Food, Cleanliness, Attitude towards passengers FOOD. This was really shocking especially in the King’s Court dining area where the majority of passengers will eat at some time. Poor quality, very limited choice, unimaginative menu which hardly varied, badly presented, small portions and often cold or alternatively dried out under the heat lamps. Only the occasional curry or stir fry reflected the local cuisine and these were bland and unappetising and only a couple of items cooked to order. Some examples of dishes served regularly were curly fries, Irish stew, roast chicken, skate wings, beef olives, pea puree, sponge pudding and custard, pork belly, lasagne. Breakfast was particularly poor but lunch and dinner were awful too, like being in a motorway café or a posh care home and we only ate eat here if we were really hungry, and we were often hungry (on a cruise!). There are alternative dining areas (we usually ate in the Britannia at night) but we sometimes we wanted a more relaxed buffet restaurant, didn’t want to wait to be seated in the Britannia restaurant and have waiter service. And we objected to paying nearly $40 extra per couple per dinner to sit in a cordoned off area of King’s Court to eat food which should have been included in the main buffet (e.g. Indian, Chinese, Italian, Mexican) or nearly $100 extra per couple to eat dinner in the Verandah. CLEANLINESS. The new design of the King’s Court restaurant is ill thought out with multiple entry points, no staff to encourage hand cleaning and you can enter the food areas straight from the outside deck without even passing a hand sanitizer. The food stations could have been cleaned more often during mealtimes. The windows and glass doors throughout the ship were covered with greasy finger marks and dirt and we never saw anyone cleaning them during the 2 weeks voyage. The window in the restaurant was so smeared with dirty cloth marks and finger prints that someone had written ‘CLEAN ME’ on it and that was still there when we left. Outside the decks looked dirty and marked with cups/ glasses/ plates not cleared away. Inside there were carpet stains, light fittings missing, some chairs were tatty, needing repairs and again cups, etc not cleared away. ATTITUDE. An arrogant, unfriendly attitude pervades the ship from the top down. Although some staff were excellent (our Britannia restaurant staff gave outstanding service) it felt like passengers were merely an inconvenience and many times myself and others had to stand aside to allow staff members, including the ship’s officers, to pass without even a thank you. We were often ignored or given the wrong item because people simply didn’t listen properly and we rarely saw any officers to talk to except when they had to attend the Captain’s cocktail party where they stood huddled together. This attitude affected the ambience of the ship which lacked energy, interest and warmth with many areas empty by 10pm. OVERALL OPINION. Cunard is trying to cut costs in the wrong areas, it is relying on it’s past reputation but not living up to it and it is targeting a increasing elderly clientele who may happily accept these standards but they won’t sustain future growth. Although many passengers will be loath to admit to their friends, family or even themselves that their cruise was overpriced and of a low standard I can honestly say that this experience was so bad that it has put us off cruising completely and I would not recommend the QM2 to anyone I know. I was booked for 28 days and left after 2 weeks. The staff are really miserable, apart from a few, JR, Alfred, Christian, the waiters on table 321 and one or two others, the maintenance crew were very nice too. The staff in Kings court were mainly really miserable, there must be something wrong with management. As I was leaving and paid for 2 weeks that I will not be on board I offered my cabin to a lady who was travelling with a companion on an inside cabin, she was on a world tour and a platinum member, so you would think a valued customer....... Cunard had me waiting for 30 minutes to their headquarters to ask "permission" for someone else to use my paid for cabin! They said no, unless she paid for it too! They are very petty with charges.... Mineral water, hello! Are you an upmarket brand or cheap and nasty charging for mineral water? No one asked me why I wanted to leave the ship 2 weeks early, I have been a business owner and I would be mortified if that happened to me and want to set it right or at least know why? Also, there is no shade anywhere on the ship? Steamer seats with no towels available, yuck! Maitre d is useless and very unhelpful. I understand that it is difficult to accommodate everyone but there were so many empty seats at tables, a lot of unhappy passengers re dining. One passenger decribed his experience as a prison sentence.. Glad I broke out of my prison experience!...... Never again! Read Less

First off, let me say the ONLY reason I'm taking the time to write this review is because of the constant nickle and diming of Cunard and their stingy ways. Otherwise I'd have just blown even the extra $3,500 off. But they're just stingy and to the bone. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary mostly - however, I am confused why we called a couple ports - and because of Cunard's reputation and reviews. We had priority embarkation so that was flawless. The community rooms, except for the Lido dining area, of the ship are well decorated with stunning under stated taste. Cunard had a half bottle of complementary sparkling win in our room which was a nice touch. That's where my amazement ended. Embarkation is at 2:00 and coincidentally lunch is over at 2:00-ish. We dropped our stuff off in the underwhelming state room (See Cabin Review Section about the stateroom's decoration and abysmal bathroom.). When we headed up to the Lido, which is decorated circa 1995 in pale blues, ugly yellow and white wood and can be hot, we found that not twenty minutes after getting on the ship on a turn-around day, they were closing up shop for lunch. I had to find a manager to leave the salad bar open. There is literally nothing to eat but mostly bread, skimpy on the filling sandwiches and cookies - all fattening - between 2:30 and 5:30ish on the ship. I don't like bread. I ended up hording bananas and cereal in our room. Other problems with the Lido dining are lack of service in at breakfast and on deck and surcharges to eat on the Lido in the evening. In the morning, there is NO table service. The food is good - in fact, except for the specialty restaurant - it is basically the only excellent food on the ship. The food is fresh prepared daily on the ship, there is a wide variety of foods, and the eggs and omelets are prepared to order. However, the beverage area is a free for all - Seriously. Oceana, or any high end hotel, has a server bring water, coffee and juices. Not Cunard. And forget any service on the deck in the pool area if you aren't ordering something that you have to pay for - like COKES. Yes, the charge nearly $3.00 for soft drinks. The Britiana dining room has food that is obviously not prepared on site. It is bland. It all tastes the same. The beef was TOUGH. And forget a vegetable. Well unless you like your vegetables drowned in the same brown gravy the meat is drowned in - day after day. So we tried the Lido one night. Um, no. The food is fresh prepared and not bad, but there is a surcharge to dine there of nearly $18.00. And the other side is a buffet style, lunch place. No, just no. The specialty restaurant was pretty good, but as per usual, they were stingy. They served a seven course meal that was quite good, but the wine paring - which was NOT INCLUDED - was two SHORT, AND I MEAN VERY SHORT glasses of wine for six courses! That's a sip of wine per course literally. And the wine didn't necessary pair well with all the courses it's supposed to pare with. WHAT?!? Normally it's a different wine per course or SOMETIMES a restaurant will combine two courses such as specialty breads and a light soup for just one glass of wine. The final course came with a so-so desert wine. And before all the diners had left the dining room they were clanking own the cages over the bar and making OBVIOUS attempts to move us along. Which brings me to the beverage prices on board. I already mentioned the charge for sodas. Wait for this. There is NO complimentary bottled water on board. There is no specialty fountains for filling Nalgenes or any other portable water device. Bottled water, wait for it, is $19.25 for a six pack of a liter and a half bottles or $3.00 for a half a liter - No, I'm not kidding. Wine? Expensive. Ordinary, and I mean nothing stellar, bottles of wine were $50 and up. Our wine package was $425 and it was only good in the Britiana which is the main dining room. Couldn't use it in the specialty dining room. OMG, and a glass of wine in the bars or in any dining room was $13.50 - nothing special either - plus 15% gratuity. Service in the Britania was so-so. And now we get down to the real cheap part. They CHARGED US $22 PER HEAD TO GET FROM THE SHIP TO SAINT MARK'S SQUARE IN VENICE. Yes. That happened. On one of our excursions that was eight hours, LUNCH WASN'T INCLUDED! And the coup de gras, and actually why I'm writing this review, is we bought a wifi package - expensive BTW, and the wifi was so horrible I couldn't get onto my bank. I talked to the lady who runs the cybershop's boss and he told me I needed to go ashore to get good wifi. Going ashore in this particular case was a fifteen minutes walk - and of course, as cheap as they are, they had no shuttles to take you to the terminal building. Anyway, they REFUSED to refund me the whole time I was logged on trying to get onto my bank. That's just stupid. I told them I would write a negative review, and nada. Another bone of contention is they have you all aboard at 5:00 to 5:30. Why? So they can sail at nine knots and save on fuel costs? I've never been on a ship that had you on board consistently at that time. Anyway, we talked to a lot of people that are looking to move away from Cunard since they got bought by Carnival. And bottom line, our $6,500 cruise ended up costing us an extra $3,500. Sail at your wallet's own risk. We're going back to Oceana and/or we've heard great things about Crystal and Viking's new, ocean going cruises. Read Less

I booked this cruise for 4 people after having a taster cruise on the Victoria in 2015 which was beautiful however despite being advised that we would probably have an 'upgrade' we ended up feeling as though we had been down graded. The balcony was smaller and as we walked into the room past the bed my husband bumped his shoulder on the wall mounted tv due to lack of space. The room looked tired and dated and as we stepped onto the balcony we were faced with a view at our feet of rusting metal. We asked for an unobstructed view but had lifeboats just underneath and a protruding balcony above us. The food in the Britannia restaurant was fine and the service could not be faulted but the food in the lido was always barely lukewarm and the quality left something to be desired. I even asked if it could be heated up but was advised they didn't have the fascillity to do so. We also walked out (as many others did) of the theatre shows as they were either a repeat of previous cruises or just old hat for people who were born in the year 1900. Alright I know this is impossible but it just felt like it. Being over 60 doesn't mean you want to sing "we'll meet again". Venice and Dubrovnik were very interesting but would have liked more free time to explore in fact we had to be back at the jetty for 2.30 when in Venice. Other shore excursions/visits were disappointing also about 9 of the 17 days were spent at sea. (Full itinerary not showing at time of booking) Despite complaining to the persors office and on the customer satisfaction forms nothing was done and no redress or contact regarding our dissatisfaction has ever been made. We have never been able to obtain an email to make our views known. We would have liked to travelled on all three Queen ships but unlikely to now. Disappointing birthday cruise Read Less
