We chose this river cruise to celebrate our Ruby wedding anniversary. We wanted a big of luxury and the opportunity to meet like minded people, have good food and to visit interesting places. This cruise certainly delivered all of that and more. We chose a balcony suite on the top deck - to be fair, it was just about all that was available when we booked. The only real negative was that it was smaller than we had visualised, so we didn't spend much time in there. Being on the Diamond deck afforded us an invitation to the Table La Rive restaurant which we really enjoyed, however the food in all restaurants was excellent. We loved the Chef's description of his menu delivered every evening before dinner. The Maitre D' then informed us of the wines he had chosen to compliment the food. The suite itself was well equipped and had a luxurious feel. We loved the coloured lighting in the shower. The GPS system was really great for learning about the places we visited. We didn't spend much time in the suite though, so didn't take advantage of the TV entertainment and computer. We really enjoyed the excursions and found the tour guides entertaining and informative. We loved the fact that the coaches left at the time discussed, so no hanging around for stragglers. One evening there was a young German violinist playing onboard, which was absolutely fabulous. So talented. We also had a musical quiz evening and a farewell disco evening. The crew were excellent, from the lovely Katie, our butler and the housekeepers who did a great job. We were greeted by name all the time and were made to feel special. I can't finish this review without mentioning Silvia, the Cruise Director. She was brilliant. She was so funny, informative and helpful, a true asset to Scenic River Cruises. We were recommended Scenic and I'm so pleased we booked with them. We will definitely travel with them again. Thank you for a really memorable cruise. Read Less

We were impressed even before we boarded for our cruise! On the day before sailing we found the dock and boarded to ask a few questions. The staff was quite pleasant and accommodating. This was definitely a different experience than an ocean cruise. We brought our luggage to the ship around 11 am on the first day and they stored it while we ate lunch and then left the ship to explore Budapest. At 3 pm we were able to check-in. That was a very fast process. There again, compared to an ocean cruise, it was a snap. We were able to go to our cabin (223). The luggage was already there. The cabin had good storage for all our belongings. The sliding doors on the closet were neat and didn’t take up room in the cabin. We particularly liked the balcony being a part of the room. That made the space seem much larger, although it only added about 20 sf more. I liked that there were four glass doors that could close off the cabin if needed. We only had the balcony top window down a couple of times, but it was nice that we had that option. The room was quiet once the room above us got all situated. We didn’t hear them again until they were on their balcony Skyping their family in Australia and talking loudly. Closing the glass doors to our room helped solve that. The door really kept out the hallway noise. I didn’t hear anything noise in the evening. We usually turned in well before other cruisers. We found to the food to be good. The plated portions were on the small side. We could have ordered more, but there was adequate food and we never went hungry. The breakfast and lunch buffets had a nice selection. Tables were configured to seat 2 or 4, and occasionally a larger one. Many times the table for two would join in the conversation with the table for four. We found our fellow passengers to be quite congenial and interesting. The excursions were set for different activity levels. We usually took the more active walking tour. My husband also went on a 38k bike ride. The bikes are electronically assisted. It was a nice ride for them. They actually got to the port in Melk about the time that we were docking. We enjoyed the evening Enrichment concert at the palace in Vienna. It was a lovely evening of listening to classical music and opera. Another outstanding excursion was the day tour to Salzburg and then lunch and a Sound of Music Show. The morning started off foggy and then lifted by the time we got to Salzburg. That made walking around the town so much nicer. Most of the passengers were on their first river cruise. One other couple were on their fourth Scenic cruise (the only line they have been on)- a good testament to Scenic. Of the 169 passengers, Canadians had the most, followed by Australians, Americans, Brits, a New Zealand couple and three from Israel. It was a good mix. Average age was probably in the upper 50s or mid 60s – no kids (except for two 20 somethings). The staff was mostly from Eastern Europe- Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, and Poland. They spoke English very well and were very pleasant. We sad that the ship was continuing on from Nuremberg without us. We look forward to going on another river cruise in the future. Read Less

We chose scenic as they are supposed to be one of the best. So, the positives - NIce looking ship, cabins comfortable if a little small, good bathrooms, - Staff on the whole are excellent and work very hard. - Pleasant lounge area. -Good selection of excursions. - Good entertainment when there was some. The Negatives - It was the worst food I have had on any cruise ship. It looked pretty but was not very good. The vegetable were invariable undercooked and inedible. We were served undercooked fish, uncooked pasta, food either under or over seasoned. All desserts seem to come with squirty cream. We had maybe 5 good meals out of 14. It advertises 4 dining venues..this is not so. There is the main Crystal dining room (1) within which it seems that there is a table they call La Rive(2) for the people in the superior cabins . Portobellos (3) is in a separate area of the lounge. You get 1 evening invitation for this set menu which got very mixed reviews on board. They have a very (1 dish) limited lunch buffet. The River Cafe(4) is, in effect a glass cabinet by the bar where they have a 2 squares of dried up sandwiches (usually ham and cheese), panini of the day which was so dry it just crumbled away when I bit into it. A wrap (the best of the options) and some small dessert options. - Butler Service- In reality there are a couple of people who you could call if you wanted say, more hangers. Most of the time they act as waiters. Numerous people we spoke to were not even aware of how to call them and had never seen them despite being told that they would come and introduce themselves on arrival. - The excursions were OK but the city tours were painfully slow and generally only offered a limited view. eg. Cologne tour consisted of standing at 4 or 5 points around the cathedral and pointing out the train station(next to the cathedral) - The cruise director was quite amusing in his talks but if you asked him anything outside of that he was not over helpful. - Entertainment was limited and we all felt that maybe some quizzes (there was 1) would have been good. All in all I would not travel with scenic again. I think they are overpriced for what you get. We also always seemed to have the worst docking compared to other lines. If you like to drink then there are unlimited drinks which you can indulge 24/7 and some people clearly did. Just to finish by saying practically everyone on the ship was ill with a flu type illness. Apparently the previous cruise also had the same problem. This does beg the question how clean everything is. Not helped by there being only 1 public toilet. Read Less
