We were excited about a trip to Greenland with Princess. We had not sailed with Princess in a number of years, last trip was on the Star Princess from Italy to the Greek Isles. Princess has cut expenses in every category. The experience was very mediocre. Cabin very small, shower for midgets, food that tasted like it came from Cracker Barrel, waiting 2 1/2 hours to get a tender to shore, another hour to get back on board, no port talks, 1 hour pre arrival time to get a seat for the show in the theater, very little to do other then spend money at the casino or cheap gift shops. I could go on but this is certainly enough for you to reconsider booking with Princess. Most fellow passengers were very experienced travers and expressed the same concerns. The trip to Greenland was the draw. Good bye Princess, this was such a subpar experience I am not willing to take another chance with your Cruse Line. Read Less

My husband and I started this cruise with a princess transfer to the NY Hilton midtown. That was a very good choice as Laguardia is a mess and the weather delays rolled in after we were safely ensconced in the hotel. We were happy with our decision to come in a day early as the first port was Halifax. Embarkation was very quick with the medallion, lots of staff to help. We were also very pleased with our choice of a port balcony mini-suite. The balcony provided lots of natural light to the suite area with a couch and tv. The bed lives up to its comfy reputation. The extra space in the tub and shower area were also much appreciated on this 16 day cruise with a lot of sea days. The itinerary, Nova Scotia, Greenland, St. Johns NL was outstanding and we had smooth sailing even though the fog horns were often going, In St. John’s NL we were docked city side and it seems like the whole town showed up for our sail away with car horns honking and lots of folks waving as we sailed out and past the impressive fort at the mouth if the harbor. Unforgettable! In spite of all the good experience onboard, we have to say we are not fans of the Caribbean princess. She carries too many passengers compared to the public spaces. It was always crowded. If you wanted to go to a show you had to go 45 min ahead, we tried 30 min and no it was 45. And to those creepy people who save seats, shame on you and shame on princess for not supervising. There were never seats in any of the public areas. I think our fellow cruisers slept in some of them Anytime dining was frustrating, i labeled it no-time dining. We were shuffled from one dining room to another and always a wait. The wait staff seemed rushed. The buffet was also very crowded and mismanaged. No seating. On noodle day the line went out the buffet and into the pool area. It is a shame as the food was really good, with lots of choices. I think it was a bad decision to convert the back area of the buffet area to buy up restaurants.The Crown grill and Sabatinis were wonderful. We purchased internet, they had one poor tech support person and always a long line. It wasn’t seamless and the pricing wasn’t transparent. Granted I knew going in that there were few days where there would be no service. But it seems everyone needed help setting it up. The medallion also needs a little work. We chose this cruise because of the Greenland destinations. Greenland has almost no tourist infrastructure and traveling both to there and while there is difficult. We wanted to compare Greenland with Iceland. The embarkation process was very smooth. I did notice they took our pictures twice, once at the service agent counter, and again three minutes later upon entering the ship. We had obtained our Medallions by mail prior to the cruise. Our balcony cabin was OK, and we noticed they had relocated the room TV to high in a corner instead of on the wall directly in front of the bed. That made it somewhat easier to navigate the narrow passage between the bed and the wall, but not as convenient to view. We liked storing suitcases under the bed. The large open closet area was nice. The bathroom was tiny tiny, as was the shower. But everything seemed to work, and we soon learned to leave a towel on the floor to keep it dry. But all was not rosy. First, the few pros: Food was OK- variety, quality, presentation, etc. Deserts, especially baked goods, uniformly taste a little "off", probably because there are few if any American trained chefs working on the ship. Open seating in the dining rooms was generally prompt. All the food service staff were aware of and knowledgeable about gluten free diet requirements, and very helpful in preparing gluten free versions of many menu items. Cabin service was simply great. Some of the many cons: The ship simply was not matched for the demographic profile of the passengers. There were basically no children on the ship, and average age was certainly in the 60's. The ship is a "newer" vintage, and recently remodeled to boot. But remodeling reduced or at best retained the size of common areas, using the space gained for more cabins. More passengers might enhance Princess's bottom line, but it made this ship CROWDED. The buffet area was always packed with people uncertain about their selections. This produced traffic jams within the food service areas. The seating areas were always generally full, resulting in lots of looking for space to sit while food cooled in your hands. Shows were OK, but finding seating for them was tedious. The theater only held 725 people, and generally only two showings were offered. Do the math. Roughly 1/2 of the people wanting to see shows were turned away. The non-answer provided by the smug cruise director responding to complaints was "go earlier". Princess made a delayed response to withering criticism by finally scheduling repeat matinee showings for some of the shows. There were few-to-none enrichment lectures. No lectures on Greenland culture, habitat or history. No lectures about upcoming ports. There is basically no tourist infrastructure yet in Greenland, so no opportunity to see anything inland. There are basically no interior roads. The few extraordinarily expensive excursions offered were limited to guided walking tours in town, or small boat trips up the fjords. The shortage of excursion space was exacerbated by Princess allowing Ships Officer's families preferred access, bumping paying customers who wanted a seat with a terse "sold-out, you should have booked your tour earlier" response. I'll give Princess sort of a pass on this because we didn't have high expectations going in. We did gain "bragging rights" in simply having set foot on Greenland soil. Tendering ashore is problem prone and slow, with delays getting from ship to shore approaching two hours at times. Many of the staff appeared to be simply going through the motions. But considering the conditions under which they serve, I can't blame them much for that. Non-theater entertainment was hit and miss, with some lounge shows bordering on terrible, and rewarded by large scale walkouts. The much ballyhooed "Medallion" (including Internet) needs some work. Internet is expensive and in the North Atlantic, very slow. Princess charged us for three drink services which we didn't make- which shouldn't be possible in a Medallion environment. The guest services agent we asked to reverse these charges clearly thought we were lying, and only reluctantly credited our account for the three services in dispute. There was universal dissatisfied grumbling about the cruise in virtually every conversation we overheard or participated in with fellow passengers. That cast a pall over the trip, and we probably won't use Princess again because of this stain. They could have done a heck of a lot better. Read Less
