Celebrity Summit

Celebrity Summit - Celebrity Cruises

Pros

Smaller size means consistent service; heavy emphasis on food and wine, with good results.

Cons

Nighttime entertainment is hit or miss, with some live music shows more snooze fest than snappy.

Bottom Line

The ship presents some of the best features of Celebrity, without being too overwhelming.

We were on Summit last year and were looking forward to sailing again for this 14 night cruise. As Elite members, we are always treated well on Celebrity, they cannot do more for us. This is the first time in long time that we did not travel with a current passport. It took no longer or less to check in with a driver's license and birth certificate. Only need to bring driver's license and ship card at all ports of call. Too easy. Once on board we did notice a little of the refurbishment but really noticed it in our inside stateroom. We had an outside stateroom last year that was on the same floor as this one and right across the hall. Celebrity likes to say that the inside cabins are the same as the outside cabins. The inside cabins are definitely smaller. Not just laid out differently, smaller. We had a leak in our bathroom that spilled out into the entrance way on the cabin and it took 3 days to finally repair properly. Carpet was wet and a fan was placed to dry area. Carpet remained damp in that area entire cruise. The color scheme in room is very light, modern. Lamps and lighting is harsh, no way to dim lights. Sofa/chair uncomfortable. Tables, dresser made from plastic/formica, made to clean quickly. Bed was very comfortable. Room service definitely went down in quality. Coffee never hot, tasted cheap, toast and bagels cold, orange juice watered down. Entertainment as expected. American Ballet Company excellent. Dining room food good, but waiter and assistant waiter never had a day that they did not apologize for taking so long in taking our order. They just had too many tables, always took at least an hour and a half to eat. Buffet was good, should not have taken out the steaks/fish/chicken made to order section away from the back, now only have minute steaks piled up in a pan back there. A little taken away here and there adds up. Constant high pressure sales of specialty restaurants as you enter anywhere. Unacceptable. Overall, we like Celebrity but we feel that the Summit of last year should have been enhanced to maintain her elegance not rushed to add more staterooms and try appear more up to date and modern. Positives Excellent itinerary - 3 US, 4 Canadian ports, nicely spaced with sea days Friendliness of staff everywhere Oceanview remodel and decor Oceanview food offerings - Indian dishes Oceanview Made to Order station - omelets and stir fry Remodeled stateroom bathrooms Lighting in staterooms Navigation screens on TV Comfort of bed and pillows Internet package - good stability, no worry about minutes, good value Negatives Library removed in remodel $14.99 in room movies No movie theater - some film notices buried in daily planner Nickel and Dime sales attempts Competent but unmemorable main dining room menus Poor communication - examples: - Menus unavailable on TV - we didn't know menus were on app for 3 days - Captain's heavy accent and rapid speech, with a lack of clear, distinct pronunciation - Soft spoken waiters and service staff - hard to comprehend - Inconsistent verbal directions among staff to find things on ship (e.g. Where's the library?) - No signs telling of upcoming unavailability of Sky Lounge - we got tossed out - Magnetic door stickers - "Deep Sleep" x 2 - no way to say room is ready for cleaning Loud dining room Small portions on big plates looks unappealing - presentation lacking Bars closed at wrong times (e.g. following return to ship from excursions) May not be returning to Celebrity anytime soon. We chose this cruise, when on another, for an itinerary to places we hadn’t been to and to see the fall. We then realised that we were too early for the fall colours but decided to stick with it and then do a drive round New England after. Summit has been refurbished and although we had not sailed on her we had sailed all 3 of her sister ships and on tour last, on Connie! We thought she was looking very tired. So the refresh is looking good, much lighter in the public rooms and the staterooms. I do wonder how long it will last, in places it seems like just a coat of paint and some new furniture. But overall we liked it. Staff service is still good, at lunch times the main restaurant seemed a little slower than we’d like, but in Blu where we ate breakfast and dinner it’s still excellent. We liked the itinerary, although this it was unfortunate on our first day in Quebec there were 6 other ships in. Quebec can’t cope with that many! PEI was the least interesting port of call. We got the feeling the residents didn’t want ships whereas on all the other ports, people seemed very welcoming. Read Less
