Celebrity Summit

Celebrity Summit - Celebrity Cruises

Pros

Smaller size means consistent service; heavy emphasis on food and wine, with good results.

Cons

Nighttime entertainment is hit or miss, with some live music shows more snooze fest than snappy.

Bottom Line

The ship presents some of the best features of Celebrity, without being too overwhelming.

The Celebrity Summit has just come out of dry dock and has had a terrific makeover. Folk say that she is now similar in some ways to the Edge, on which we have not yet sailed. The ship is handsome, the decor very soothing with a calm, serene, sophisticated aura. The cabins, in particular, are nicely done in beige tones. Lots of storage space. Sadly, no coffee table so room service is a challenge! The bathrooms are sleek but tight and their compactness could be an issue for some passengers. We weren't overly happy with the new configuration of the Oceanview Cafe. There seems to be more seating so finding a seat is not usually a problem but it always felt a little chaotic as passengers tried to navigate the various stations. There are a number of attractive bars, none of them ever overcrowded. Unfortunately, there seems to be no game or card room and, sad to note, no library to speak of (there is a miserable book nook in one of the lounges with about thirty books in a number of languages that is really unsatisfactory); this seems to totally ignore the likes and wishes of many of the passengers. Folk are now spread out on the ship playing board games and cards, occupying necessary space, for example, in the Oceanview Cafe. There is one small lounge next to Sushi on Five which was never, ever occupied which would have made a nice place for a library or cards. This entertainment aspect was not well thought out but seems to be a trend, assuming everyone is now content to be on their electronic devices. The on board entertainment on Celebrity continues to disappoint, never rising above the mediocre. However, on this sailing, praise to Anne Steele and Ric Steel (not related; they performed on separate evenings) two exceptional entertainers - above par! Our major disappointment was the cuisine in the Cosmopolitan Restaurant. Dining is usually a big plus on Celebrity but not on this occasion. Curiously, the food was just acceptable on the first five or six nights, never better than okay. Suddenly on, perhaps, day six the food improved significantly and was up to the expected Celebrity standards. It seemed quite peculiar and we couldn't find any logical reason for that; it was unfortunate that the first nights were really underwhelming. As always, the dining room staff was delightful. We must single out Branco, our Sommelier - he's just great! And the matre'd, Vitaly, does a commendable job. Our cabin attendant was excellent and we never wanted for anything. Embarking and disembarking at Cape Liberty was smooth and super easy. Read Less

While we were touring the South Pacific in January on the Aranui 5, cargo/passenger ship, I spotted a cruise with Celebrity called, “Sail Away and Beyond.” We had sailed with Celebrity many years ago in the Western Caribbean and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience so we were tempted to book the cruise. The cruise started in Newark, New Jersey, sailed up the coast to Rhode Island, Portland, Bar Harbour, Boston and Bermuda for 11 days. This special promotion allowed us: Premium Beverage Package, Free Internet, Free Gratuities and $300.00 U.S. for our cabin. Excellent deal, only had to book airfare from Toronto to Newark, New Jersey. Upon arrival at the airport in Newark, we followed the signs to the baggage claim and then the taxi stand. A lady printed out a receipt for the transfer to the Bayonne Cruise Terminal. The cost was approx. $48.00 incl. tolls and tips on top. You paid the cab driver at the end. Fifteen minutes later, we were at the terminal. We arrived on a Wednesday, mid day, so that might have accounted for less traffic. Noticed, we passed a Costco Store on the way to the terminal. If I had known and did not have a beverage package included, it would have been a good opportunity to pick up some premium wine for our cabin since they allowed 2 bottles aboard upon embarkation. The whole trip was wonderful, highlight being Bermuda for us. Staff was outstanding: Wayan our Cabin Stewart, cabin 6082, mid ship, starboard side,(good location), Cosmopolitan Dinner staff of Ernesto, Priya, Josip were excellent, Cafe Bacio waitress, Olesnia was very efficient and friendly, Oceanview Restaurant-Amornlaka, our pastry and coffee lady was a treat to see with her smile in the morning for breakfast. Wine Stewarts at lunch were very accommodating and engaging-Rikka, Jenny, Josip, and Tetiania. Celebrity offered a variety of tours of which we only took two, one in Boston and one in Bermuda. There was a variety of entertainment and it was very good. We went to the 7 o’clock performance, then had our dinner seating at 8:15 pm. Menu also had a variety of selections. Evening meals in the dining room were varied and tasty but often luke warm by the time it arrived at the table. If I was to do this over again with Celebrity, I would chose seating on the fourth floor which was anytime dining with various guests because the kitchen is closer. Food had to be transferred from level 3 to level 5 in our case and I can understand why it arrived mildly warm. Dress was not overly dressy at dinner except for the “Chic” nights. If you are interested, I will write about the places we visited on excursions on Trip Advisor since I like their format better. Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise mainly for the ports. Both embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. The ship is beautifully refurbished and our inside cabin was spacious and always kept clean by the cabin stewards. We ate breakfast and lunch in the Oceanview Café and dinners at the Cosmopolitan. The food in the Oceanview Café was ok, not great. The fruit selection never varied - 3 melons + pineapple along with unfrozen strawberries in the morning. I especially liked the stool seating facing the windows - it was nice to get an ocean/port view at breakfast or lunch. The dinners in the Cosmopolitan were ok, service was excellent. The tables in the dining room are squeezed together too close so a table for 2 may as well be a table for 6 or 8. We didn't use the solarium or outdoor pool area other than early in the morning or late afternoon (that was when there lounges available). If you like very loud music then the outdoor pool was your place to be--but not for us. The rooftop terrace was a nice quiet area if you could get covered lounges. We did watch a movie there and it was ok, again it was good if you had a covered lounge, otherwise you sat in the sun. This was a useless space unless you like sitting in the full sun. We did find other quiet areas to sit as well. Nightly entertainment was better than the usual ship singers and dancers. The guest speakers were excellent. Excursions we took were good. Read Less
