Got a cabin cancellation three weeks out, seemed like a good deal. Cabin 119 with just a small window was fine. Viking did an outstanding job, everything exceeded my expectations, this was our first river cruise and our first visit to central Europe. Candi, the cruise director was extremely organized, loved the QuietVOX RF receiver/headphone system. We only did included excursions which we enjoyed., they were well run, we had enough time in each port. Buses were extremely well run when used. Ship looks like new, food was excellent, service was excellent. The only thing I can think of for Viking to improve is to lower the price! We loved small German towns, we found Basel to be very expensive, restaurants in city seem to be about twice what we are used to in rural Virginia. God willing we'll be going on more Viking cruises. Misc: for the first time we did laundry every night on the ship, rapid dry clothes dry in less than 4 hours, cotton underwear, socks and shirts take 20 hours. We used the heated bathroom floor to finish dry the socks and underwear. There was a clothes line in the shower. Loads of hot water, loads of water pressure from shower head. Read Less

First Viking cruise. Low water meant a move Wed from Hiln to Kara with a local ship cruise down that part of the Rhine we could not sail on. We missed little although there were issues with locks in Amsterdam diverting ship from there to Rotterdam and not being told, the low river water and the ship swap and some foggy weather. Oh and a French police strike in Colmar. But through it all our cruise director Candi kept it all moving - kudos to the crews for effortlessly handling everything. Both ships had great crews - we loved the team on the Hiln though - and despite a review to the contrary - we liked them better than the crew on the Kara - but both were good. Ships very clean but sometimes musty smelling. We really disliked the cattle call meal times where everyone is called to eat at 7 and it's like a game of musical chairs. Ugh. Food was ok - a B. The chef on Kara was better over all. Tour guides are simply amazing - wow - real quality. That made things so worthwhile. Bottom line would we cruise Viking again? If there are going to ports we want to see yes. But not one of those folks that pick a different Viking Cruise every year as some do. They are not that good. Viking could learn dining from Holland with their Any Time plan, the quality of their food and the way they serve buffets. And Holland crews are simply amazing. Read Less

This was my second Viking Cruise. I chose Viking again because the first cruise was so great. But in the three years between the cruises, Viking services deteriorated to the extent that I will never take a Viking cruise again. While the staff was friendly and nice, the service and food were mediocre. I never met my room steward. I could have handled the fact that the Rhine River was so low we had to leave our ship mid-cruise and board another ship (can't control weather) but we weren't even offered a travel voucher for our trouble. Every other person on every other line that I met who traveled when the Rhine conditions were not great received a travel voucher for future travel even if they weren't inconvenienced as we were. We were compensated with some free wine one night. Whoopee! The first time I traveled with Viking, the wine was free all the time! And I don't limit my critique to the cruise. Every time I contacted Viking ahead of time for more information or advice, I was given the same response, which was "I don't know." My theory is that Viking has chosen money over service. I would chose the opposite. Additionally, my husband couldn't travel with me and we had to use our travel insurance for reimbursement for his part of the trip. I got back less than the cost of the travel insurance, Very different from when my friend sought reimbursement for their Viking River Cruise and got the whole thing back - but that was four years ago. Viking has changed. They aren't worth it any longer. Try another cruise line. If Viking continues in this vein, they won't be around much longer anyway! Read Less
