We chose the 14 day river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest with 3 days in Paris (Westin Hotel) at the start and 3 days in Prague (Art Deco Imperial Hotel) at the end. This was our first river cruise but we have been on 5 ocean cruises in the last 3 years. Scenic was pitched to us as 5 star all the way and it simply did not live up to its reputation. The Paris and Prague portions were excellent with great tour directors, hotels and excursions. We had free time and could walk most places. The high speed train from Paris to Amsterdam was excellent with good food and drink service as well as a comfortable seat. The transfer to Prague was via a long coach ride and we got stuck in two traffic jams due to accidents. A train transfer should be considered by Scenic. The cruise itself was underwhelming. The cabin was small but well appointed and comfortable. Our room steward was phenomenal and kept our room clean and well stocked including the mini bar. The balcony was nice but the window was loud to open and took about 15 seconds each way. Unfortunately due to the vast number of ships sailing this route we ended up tied alongside another ship for half of our time in Port. This meant that you couldn't really use the balcony and needed to keep the curtains closed which meant that you basically had an inside room. Balcony was a waste of time money. The food was a mixed bag. Both breakfast and lunch was served buffet style in the main dining room with an option for a la carte from a menu. The layout of the buffet was terrible with people not knowing which way to go and line ups for omelettes etc longer than I've experienced before and there was only 160+ onboard. Breakfast food was quite good but lunch here was not worth it and we generally went for the light lunch in the lounge upstairs which was less crowded. Dinner was great some nights including Portobellos and average some others as was the service. Definitely not 5 star dining and certainly the worst food overall that we have had on any cruise. The drink service was excellent including bar snacks before dinner. The excursions were also a mixed bag and as usual dependant on the tour guide. They varied from poor to very good but at this price point you expect excellent across the board. We discovered that the "Sundowner" excursion included in our package was only going to be drinks and snacks on the sun deck and not in a more exotic location as on other Scenic cruises. It never occurred anyways because shortly before that day they ran the stern of the ship aground briefly during the night, waking everyone up and damaging the propeller and other parts of the propulsion system. This necessitated placing the ship in dry dock for one day. The cruise director did a great job of rescheduling most of the excursions but some people missed out and we spent a lot of hours on a coach killing time until the ship was back in the water. The Captain, basically non communicative during the entire cruise, gave a poor and perhaps dishonest explanation of what occurred and why which satisfied few onboard. The "Sundowner" event never happened and was never mentioned again. Be aware that this cruise goes through 68 locks which are interesting at first and during dinner but not as much during the night after going through 40 already. We found a few crew members both unhappy and rude which we have never experienced before on any cruise. The majority however were very friendly and accommodating. The entertainment on board each evening was listed as live but was generally a DJ. One of our group complained one night and he switched to playing and singing live for a while which was quite good. The local entertainment they brought onboard several times in the afternoon was always excellent and we could have used more of that. Read Less

Our scenic adventure started with a driver waiting for us at Budapest airport who dropped us at Marriott. Great hotel good location. Two pre cruise days in Budapest. So much much to see and all of it walkable. Scenic picked up our luggage first then later transferred us to Scenic Ruby. Very efficient and quick process. We had a royal balcony suite on the ruby. Spacious, comfortable bed, large bathroom, plenty of storage for clothing, and separate lounges area w/small couch and two chairs. We were very happy with the size of the suite for our 15 day journey. Daily laundry service was an unexpected bonus. Put out your bag of clothes in the morning, and they are returned clean, folded and pressed in the afternoon. Though we did not use the butler service much, they were quick to respond when we called. Due to low water levels we had to change ships once after Melk. The staff on both Ruby and Jade made it so seamless, it was no issues what so ever. The daily choice of activites were excellent. We did bike rides, city tours, and more. Scenic really caters to all activity levels. Our tour guides in Salzburg and in Cologne were boring, so we set out on our own to explore. Wished we had more time to explore some of the Salzburg. The staff on both Ruby and Jade were quite honestly outstanding. From housekeeping who kept our suite spotless, to the wait staff in the dining room, all top notch. Food in the dining room was really quite good. My husband especially enjoyed the fresh cookie selection available all day every day next to that great coffee machine in the lounge. Alex our crises director was entertaining and informative, and we looked forward to the port talks each night, as well as his insightful presentations on the history and culture of the areas we cruised through. Each day he steered us to the right buses, or activities, and was always on hand to answer any questions we had for him. I really enjoyed the fact that I didn’t have to plan anything...we just had to choose what our activity was for the following day. We very much enjoyed the wonderful fellow cruisers on the boat. We are in our late 50’s early 60’s, so we were part of the younger crowd. But what a great mix of people. We also had on board two folks from National Geographic. Susan was the photographer who was there to share technique’s and help hone skills. Mark was there to share with us the history, culture and politics of the regions we were sailing through. Both were such a great addition to the cruise. We ended the cruise in Amsterdam, and spent two days exploring that lovely city. I would suggest that Scenic select another hotel option other than the Double tree. While it was a great location, it was was run down and our room was dirty. I would pay more for a nicer hotel. This was our first river cruise and our first Scenic adventure. Our first Nat Geo adventure. It is not often that often that reality exceeds expectations, but Scenic hit it out of the ball park on this trip. When Scenic says it’s all inclusive, they not kidding. From food to cocktails to all your excursions, it’s all included. If you are looking for outstanding service, spacious and lovely accommodations, varied excursions for all activity levels (we were the high activity level), a great mix of passengers, and a trip you won’t soon forget - Scenic is the cruise line for you. We chose this cruise du to the fact that it was all inclusive and the write-ups. Due to river levels we did not get to sail on the ship we paid for. This we found out the day before we boarded the ship (Scenic Amber) hence we were on an older vessel lacking amenities we paid for. At the time of booking this cruise (may 2017) we book adjacent rooms with close friends as both couples were celebrating 40th anniversary, and this trip was to commemorate this event. Upon boarding the ship found us separated substantially on the same deck. When we approached the cruise director he informed that the ships were different configuration and there was nothing he could do. We would have to take it up with Scenic at a later date. Needless to say the cruise started off totally with a crash. The change to the second ship ended up consuming almost 2 days with an evening packing, 6 hours on a bus for a 2 hour tour and an evening for unpacking into tighter quarters on "Scenic Pearl". Dining on board was average at best but should be rated at 2.5, other than the Table La Riv. Compared to other cruises I have been where dining would be 4 to 5. Read Less
