Riviera

Riviera - Oceania Cruises

Pros

Emphasis on food and wine pays off with some of the best dining at sea.

Cons

Entertainment is lackluster, and the ship shuts down pretty early.

Bottom Line

The ship is a perfect fit for foodies and those who want a deeper dive into ports.

I always cruise at the holidays at least the 10th time w/Oceania at this holiday sailing - they cook, clean and sing. What's not to like? Oh yeah, 1. scooters: I've never seen such a 'disabled' bunch of people. Research indicated U.S. ADA rules must be followed and ANYONE can use a scooter on board. The scooters blocked doorways to all venues such as restaurants, library, theater, etc. They were left haphazardly in the hallways and everywhere on ship. put the scooters in the cabins....if there is an emergency, I need to get out. They are a SAFETY hazard for everyone. A parking area for scooters is needed. (amazingly the scooter people are able to navigate a buffet on foot!) And......the scooter drivers yell at you to 'get out of their way'...wow 2. "Service/therapy" animals......they barked and bothered other cabins, they growled in the theater and were fed filet mignon.....no kibble for them. Something has got to give....I used to think the kids were the problem...haha The service and food were very good. The entertainment was mediocre at best (as usual), the decorations this year were very good. Oceania doesn't know who they are going to get for a group ....this year was the least friendly and most rude bunch of people ever. Read Less

This is our 2nd time on Oceania. We are Elite members of Celebrity but we like the smaller ship and amenities on Oceania. We parked at Garage J and walked right across the street to the terminal. Very convenient although, on the return, we did have to take a bus to the garage but it was very quick. Embarkation was quick at 1:30. We found out that our B2 veranda cabin on deck 8 was not going to be ready until 3pm. That was a bummer so we went straight to the Terrace Cafe which was as good as we remembered. An announcement came a little after 2 that the cabins were ready. Our stateroom was as we remembered. it was spotless and kept that way by our very friendly room attendant. Blackout curtains actually closed all the way. Comfy bed and good pillows. Towels were thick but not soft. Hate the shower. So small, tired of bumping my elbows. The closet had plenty of hangers but don't like the location next to the bed. Plenty of storage space. We ate at the main dining room, the buffet, and all 4 specialty restaurants for dinner. The only one we wouldn't go back to was Polo Grille. I love ribeye and mine came lukewarm which I didn't mind but it was tasteless, no seasoning. There was one constant flaw with the food. I love caesar side and make a really good one at home. The buffet and 3 of the restaurants served the same caesar salad and it was soggy and tasteless. I always got it for lunch at the buffet. One day there were bringing out a new container of lettuce and I notice in the old one that there was probably an inch of water sitting in the bottom. that explained why the lettuce was soggy. But in each restaurant? As far as entertainment, I'm hearing impaired (can hear but sometimes can't understand the conversation), so I didn't go to see the comedian. My husband did and said he was just OK. The magician was amateurish. The other 2 shows were good. I did well at the casino and I liked that it was smoke-free. Had a wonderful massage at the spa. Worked out in the afternoons and had no wait for equipment. The service all around was really good as expected. Everyone smiled and wanted to help. Happy hour at Horizons worked out really well as I found a drink that I liked a lot and it was 2 for 1. We did not do shore excursion as we had been to all of these places before but we really liked the fact that the ship was docked close to the towns so we could walk off the ship and be right in the middle of things. We are planning on doing another Oceania cruise when the price is right. Who doesn't love being pampered! Read Less

We previously sailed in the Caribbean on Silversea on the Silver Cloud, a smaller and older ship, and wanted to try a larger and newer ship. The experience was outstanding. With 1250 guests, the Riviera didn't feel too big or too crowded to us, is in beautiful condition and was decorated for the holidays. The finishes and furnishings were luxurious, yet not overdone. We loved the variety of quality art on the walls throughout the ship and we could always find a quiet place to read. We loved the expanded size of our penthouse suite, with plenty of space to relax and a large walk-in closet. The crew members attending to our suite were friendly and professional. The specialty restaurants with their varied menus and excellent service were outstanding and we appreciated being able to reserve a table for two in advance. We loved the Terrace Cafe with many delicious buffet options for breakfast and lunch....especially eating on the outside terrace at the stern of the ship. The evening entertainment shows, featuring singers and dancers, was consistently outstanding. We also loved listening to the string quartet in more quiet settings. John, the cruise director, gave concise announcements over the PA system and was a great host of the evening shows. The entire crew seemed to be happy to be working on the Riviera and to take pride in their work. We particularly enjoyed the Cozumel Highlights and Shopping excursion with Raul as our passionate and well-informed guide. The Gumbalimba Preservation Park excursion in Roatan was also enjoyable. We're already searching for our next cruise on Oceania! Read Less
