Was interested in the ports-had heard croatia was beautiful-didn't disappoint. Greece (Athens) was disappointing as there were 5 cruise ships in port at same time-appt 15,000 cruisers plus local visitors all trying to see the acropolis at same time-didn't happen with fear of not getting back to boat in time. Do NOT do the On/Off bus tour as you don't have time to get off at the stops and make it back in time-bus line(Grayline) was very unorganized in trying to get passengers where they wanted to go. If you want to see the acropolis-do an organized tour-not on your own. Book early, the excursions on boat do fill up. The KRKA National park in Split, Croatia was beautiful. Waterfalls everywhere. Very cold water to swim in but very lovely! Really enjoyed this excursion. We were on the cruise for 4th of July and we did enjoy the ship acknowledging Independemce day for the USA! I really enjoyed this. Ship did have easy process getting on/off boat even in port with no real "backups" waiting to get off or back on. Enjoyed the cruise staff celebrating us back from excursion at the last port with singing and dancing-that was nice! Took the cruise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Just an OK cruise but not our favorite! Read Less

For our 40th Anniversary we decided to fly into Venice a couple of days early to acclimate before the cruise. NCL handled our pre-cruise hotel in the quaint village of Quarto d'Antonio a short 29 minute train ride into Venice. Additionally, we were transported to the pier on the day of the cruise. Embarkation was a breeze. Ups and downs: Ups: the specialty restaurants were very good. Down: We were not happy with the service in the Versaille Dining Room. Our table was by the wiater's station and we watched as their confusion unfolded. The service was bad. We saw our waiter actually take bread from two used baskets and created a new one for us. Not exactly sanitary. Ups: The Dalmation Coast is breathtaking in its green space and majestic peaks. It was hard to believe that this area that had suffered from war in the ninety's and rebounded back. Down: Our tour and tour guide in Kotor was sub-par with a clue. She promised to have everybody back to the ship by 2:30pm. Only problem the ship was scheduled to depart at 2pm. When she was told her response was "oh, okay!" Ups: Her crew was the best. The Star was a well-kept but was starting to show her age; but stil, she was a grand lady to cruise on. Read Less

We chose the Norwegian Star out of Venice because a cruise vacation fits our familiy's needs and to see cities and ports of call that we have never visited before. We have not cruised in eleven years and wanted to experience developments in the industry. The Star is a midsized ship, 2,600 passengers, and that was plenty to achieve extraordinary diversity as to age and ethnicity. We heard multiple languages being spoken and enjoyed that portion of our experience. The restaurants on board were all very good, both as to quantity and quality of food. We booked ahead for most nights which was very important to being seated without a substantial wait at dinner time. We appreciated seats being set aside in the buffet restaurant and at the theater for guests with limited mobility. The most troubling aspect of the cruise was the time it took to leave the ship in tender ports. We lost too much time in this process, and that cut into our precious time ashore. NCL certainly cares a lot about customer experience, but this does need improvement. If it is possible to stagger the cruise ship arrivals in the various ports that would help reduce long tender rides and sometimes disturbingly large crowds in the various ports (five ships in port during our only few hours in Santorini). Also an alternative to using the cable car to descend in Santorini must be developed. This very long wait was very stressful and frustrating, especially as we watched lots of people break in line. The best part of the trip was the onboard evening entertainment. The production shows were absolutely outstanding. The singers and dancers were very talented, an aspect of our cruise that I did not anticipate and which added value. One other commendation is that on the day our port visit to Mykonos was canceled due to bad weather, NCL was able to swiftly reroute us to Athens with several good choices for shore excursions. I was very impressed with the speed that this change was implemented and that in my opinion our overall experience was enhanced by the unexpected change. Read Less
