We selected this cruise because Cuba was originally on the itinerary. Through no fault of Viking, this port of call was cancelled due to a change in government policy. We still kept the reservation, as we wanted to visit the Central American places on the itinerary, as well as part of the Panama Canal. We knew we had some days at sea, but because of winds and rough seas, in addition to the Cuba stop being cancelled, we didn't get to Honduras or Mexico either. Way too many days at sea for us. The food was generally good to excellent in the Restaurant, and the service was outstanding. We did wish there were more choices of included wines--two reds and two whites, for example. The dishes were always beautifully presented. The included excursions sometimes included lengthy bus rides and not a lot to see--Belize and Panama City, for example. We like adults only trips and appreciated the quiet and upscale atmosphere. Read Less

We wanted to try Viking as we like smaller ships and nice service. Sadly, Viking does not live up to a luxury or premium standard. Passenger to crew ratio is around 2 to 1. Staff in restaurants and bars are over-worked at times if it is busy and service becomes very slow and poor. If not busy, staff are great. Communications on the ship are lacking. The cruise director, Chris, is a great singer but not a good cruise director. Communications on ports was late and in- complete. For example, we left Costa Rica 5 hours late. We were not notified until ready to sail. We also missed 2 ports of call. After waiting nearly 2 hours with little communications. Captain and senior staff not present walking around or interacting with passengers. This is never a good sign. The captain seems to avoid all responsibility and contact with passengers. Today, Cozumel was cancelled and the captain never communicated once with passengers but left it to the cruise director. This is one of the worst cruises we have experienced. Roatan was cancelled due to rain and wind. 3 other ships were docked there but not Viking. We were arriving 4 hours late. Not one apology from the crew. Cozumel was cancelled due to winds. We have been at Cozumel many times and it was not that bad. Ferries were traveling and 3 other ships were docked. But not Viking. Is this a problem with the Viking ship that it cannot handle wind? Again, no apologies, The attitude is one of it is not our problem. Viking response was call customer relations once back home. Viking has now substituted Key West in the itinerary. But we stopped at Key West on way to Panama Canal, so this will be the second time at the same port. Very nice Viking....so 5 ports of call on a 14 day cruise, Viking is at best a standard cruise line experience with a nice, smaller ship. It is not luxury and does not compare with lines like Seabourn. Service. food, entertainment are all below that of the luxury lines but a significant margin. Viking is oriented to older passengers. The average age on board is well over 70. If this is your desire, great. We prefer a more active cruise. We do like to casual dress on the ship. No formal nights but nice casual the entire time. Shore excursions are very limited and the included ones are very basic. Certainly not as good to most cruises we have been on. Overall, Viking is nice but for the price, it does not compare to Seabourn, Silversea, Regent, etc. It has some positives such as the ship design but comes up short due to staffing levels, communications and terrible customer relations. We also wonder if there is a problem with the ship. I cannot recommend Viking to anyone based on our experience. Read Less

The cruise offered three days in Israel; it offered free excursions at every port; it served free wine or beers at most meals; etc. Viking also has an excellent reputation, and the cruise went at a most convenient time for us. My wife has traveled on river cruises with Viking and loved them, but this was the first time either of us had a Viking sea cruise. We especially enjoyed the Italian restaurant but not so much the Asian restaurant. The menus for the main dining room were very varied and enabled us to enjoy our favorite dishes. We did not avail ourselves of the fitness room, but my wife did have some service at the spa, such as a massage and hair dressing. The lecture on the Bayeau tapestry we found very informative, especially as most of the elevator stages had exceollent, enlarged c opies of panels from the tapestry. Read Less
