Viking was an amazing company to deal with from the initial booking conversation to the follow up phone call after the cruise. The service was impeccable from start to finish. We did a pre-cruise stay in Amsterdam and a post cruise stay in Prague and were pleasantly surprised at the constant access we had to Viking hosts to answer any questions and give us suggestions to maximize our stay. We were greeted by a Viking host at the airport before we had even collected our luggage. The speed and ease of check in onboard ship was another surprise. Our previous experiences involved much larger ocean going vessels. Wes, the cruise director, was fantastic, helpful, knowledgeable, and fun. Delicious variety of food with options to please everyone. Many of the included walking tours involved a lot of walking, which was fine for us, but a challenge for those not used to or able to exercise regularly. Incredible scenery each day both as we traveled and at our stops. We signed up for all the "included" tours and not many of the optional tours, which gave us a great balance of scheduled guided time vs free time on our own. Because of low water in the Danube when we traveled, we actually had to be bused one day from one port to another and switch ships. This meant we had to pack all our things and they transported them with us. While this was annoying, the Viking crew made it as hassle free as possible. Both ships are made the same and we kept our same cabin, room number and all, on the 2nd ship. Wes, our cruise director, switched ships with us, although the rest of the crew was new to us. The ships' decor was typical Scandinavian, AKA clean lines, not fancy, minimalist, unlike most ocean vessels we have been on. However, we found the furniture in both the lounge and the dining room very comfortable, which was important because the evening meal could easily turn into a 2 hour event as you got to know your fellow ship mates while you dined. Viking occasionally brought on local entertainment and speakers, all of which were excellent. The Viking musicians (pianist, singers) in the lounge were also very good. We recommend this cruise and this company. Would love to do another of their river cruises in the future. Read Less

Wanted to go from Amsterdam to Budapest. The whole experience was great. We didn’t get to Amsterdam early enough to take in the sights which now was hind sight. The people on the ship with you were friendly. The restaurant was great looked forward to our meals, we had great company, Viking takes care of everything, the tours were all we needed to see everything they are well thought out. The cabin was just what we needed we had the veranda, it was a good choice. The whole experience was wonderful, we recommend it. The cursing on the river is a great time it’s so great to be so close to the water, going through the locks and experiencing the cruising and the town’s,Ii had no idea Germany was that beautiful, the shore excursions were really good. We weren’t sure what to expect but now we do, we look forward to going again, Read Less

Just returned from 14-day Amsterdam to Budapest with 3-day Prague extension. I've done a lot of cruising, so was really looking forward to Viking's "superior" experience, and was really disappointed. The ships' crews were great. FYI, if you're on the Modi or Skirnir, there's a broken lock on the Main, and they'll give you 48 hours notice on an "unfortunately" announcement about switching ships (we docked at Nuremberg, toured, and were bused 3 hours to Regensburg, where we boarded the Modi with a new crew, same room, etc.). Transfer was handled smoothly, but they've been doing this since lock broke on June 5th - they should be more up front about it. Before I booked the 3-day Prague extension, I read that Viking promised train transfer, but used people. When I booked, I was assured we would transfer by train. Not true - was a 9 hour coach ride, which the onboard guide told me they'd been doing for 5 years. Also - that's your whole first day. We got in at 5 p.m. and were exhausted. Hotel about 2 mi out of old town Prague, so long walk. For what we paid for that extension ($699 per person), I could have put us on train for the 2.5 hr ride, and a closer hotel, at half the price tag. Again, my main gripe is the build-in dishonesty about the company. The stops on this itinerary were all great, and local guides were usually pretty good. Service on Skirnir was mediocre, but food was great. When we switched to Modi, service was excellent, but food was mediocre and we started skipping meals. Do not use their add-on "flight concierge" service. We paid for it, to get window/seats together, and to avoid the east coast airports. Flights changed 7 or 8 times (airlines and/or connecting cities). When I went to check in, I had to pay Delta and additional $54 for a window seat because flight concierge completely doesn't keep up on your reservation and preferences once they make the original booking. Not worth it. Last complaint is about the almost daily reminders from our tour director that we could tip extra for excellent service. We pre-paid the $20/day per person gratuities so we didn't have to worry about it. But the daily hustling and reminders from Wez were tacky and uncomfortable. I thought that was really unprofessional for a supposed "luxury" company. We know we can tip extra for great help (and we did) - but the daily harangues were off-putting. My sense is that regardless of what Viking promises, all these river cruises are basically the same level of service/food/experience. Go with a more economical line, and be wary of extensions.
