Espiritu Santo, known locally as Santo, is the largest island of the Vanuatu archipelago and lies northwest of the island of Efate, where the capital Vila is located. Its population is very diverse, with many different languages reflecting centuries of Pacific region migration. In 1980, Santo was the scene of a rebellion led by local politician Jimmy Stevens, aimed at securing independence from Vanuatu. (The effort was quickly put down.) The main crop is copra. Luganville, at the southeastern corner of the island, is the second-largest town of Vanuatu. It's like visiting a time warp with quaint shops (many still owned by Chinese settlers) and a wide, dusty main street; the general stores seem to have one of everything.
