Named the happiest city in Europe (based on an EU survey), Aalborg, Denmark, presents cruise travelers with a mix of modern and historic sites, plus restaurants, shops and green spaces. Visitors will find plenty to do to fill a full or partial day, but a day in Aalborg is unlikely to be the highlight of your fjords cruise.
Cruise ships dock right in town, and it's easy to do an architectural walking tour, passing the Renaissance-style Jens Bang's House (note the grotesque faces, including one sticking out its tongue at City Hall across the street), the baroque Budolfi Cathedral and the modern Utzon Center and the Musikkens Hus performing arts center. Watch the dancing fountains, check out the singing trees in the Park of Music or take the beer lover's walking tour.
The most notable attractions might just be outside the city center. The Aalborg Zoo is famous for its exotic animals and the Viking burial site of Lindholm Hoje is a must-do for anyone interested in Viking history.
