Cruises to Kalosca

About Kalosca

Kalocsa is one of the oldest towns in Hungary, with its thousand years of history dating it back nearly to the founding of the Hungarian state itself. As the episcopal see of one of the four Catholic archbishops of Hungary, Kalocsa boasts a magnificent Baroque cathedral and archbishop's palace in its city center. Although the cathedral is not included in many riverboat excursions, its tall twin towers can be seen from considerable distances.

Most excursions either provide several stops at the city's museums, or a visit to an equestrian city to learn about Hungarian horsemanship, or both.

Con: Most excursions skip city's historical center

Bottom Line: A delightful stop for an overview of life in rural Hungary

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

It's best to arrive in Kalocsa with plenty of cash. None of the places on the excursion accepted credit cards, only cash -- either in Hungarian forints, euros or American dollars. No ATMs were in evidence at the docking place on the Danube, a 10-minute bus ride to the town, nor along the route that our bus followed. For that reason, it's advisable to have obtained some of the local currency before leaving Budapest. For up-to-date exchange rates between the Hungarian forint and other currencies, visit www.xe.com

Hungarians know that their fiendishly difficult language is one of the most challenging on Earth for foreigners to learn, so shopkeepers and persons dealing with tourists have mastered English. Conversation with the average person on the street in Kalocsa may be more difficult.
