Cruises to Exmouth

About Exmouth

Exmouth is well deserving of its description as the 'Eco Capital of Western Australia' offering spectacular sights both in and out of its turquoise waters and stunning coastline. The Port of Exmouth is located at the tip of North West Cape, about 1270 kilometres north of Perth, on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast.

Originally established in 1967 to support the nearby United States Naval Communication Station, it is now known as the gateway to the Ningaloo Marine Park with its coral reefs, colourful fish, migratory whale sharks and humpback whales.

With a population of 2500, the small resort town swells to triple its size from April to July when travellers visit to swim with whale sharks known as gentle giants of the sea.

It also has its own welcoming committee -- emus and their chicks often wander the streets and walk through the town centre. Exmouth is also one of the few places that offers a Range To Reef experience with the Cape Range National Park on its doorstep stretching over 506 sq. km. With its red, rocky gorges and sheer cliffs, the scenery is impressive. Kangaroos also make an appearance.

Jurabi Coastal Reserve that's on the Cape's northwest coast, is a seasonal nesting ground for marine turtles and there are tidal rock pools and beautiful beaches. Exmouth gets pretty hot -- temperatures can hit 40 degrees Celsius in summer. Winters are mild and pleasant with daytime temperatures about 25 degrees Celsius.

Unlike many Top End destinations, Exmouth doesn't experience a specific wet and dry season, but rain is most likely to fall between January and July, with monsoonal showers and storms expected from January to April. May, June and July see cooler temperatures while the period between August and December is usually dry. Cruise passengers arrive by tender boats at the Exmouth Marina, which is a short walk or a few minutes' drive to the town.

Exmouth Cruise Port Facilities?

Tender boats are used to transport cruise passengers to the Exmouth Marina located at Madaffari Drive. Local volunteers welcome passengers as they arrive and provide information about their town and surrounds. An information desk is also located near the marina on cruise days providing information about the various tours on offer. There are no ATMs near the marina, but there are many in town.

A free shuttle service is provided to take passengers to points of interest around the town. The marina is a five-minute drive to the town, however resident emus and their families can hold up the traffic for a few minutes -- they have right of way in the town.

Good to Know?

Many of the tours book out quickly, especially the chance to swim with whale sharks and humpbacks so book well in advance. A free shuttle service for cruise passengers runs from the marina to the town centre every 20 minutes. Many tour operators offer discounts for Australian seniors and students.

Getting Around?

On Foot: It's a 10-minute walk into the town centre from the marina.

By Taxi: Taxis -- Cabs on Call (0408 449 944)

By Bus: A free shuttle bus is offered for all scheduled cruise arrivals. It runs every 20 minutes and passengers can disembark at the Ningaloo Centre (Murat Road; 08 9949 3000; open daily, April to November, 8.30 am to 5 pm, November to March, Monday to Friday, 8.30 am to 5 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 9 am to 1 pm) for the Ningaloo Visitor Centre, Ningaloo Aquarium and Discovery Centre and the Exmouth Cultural Arts Centre. It also stops at the Exmouth Town Centre for the Ross Street Mall, Exmouth Water Spray Ground and Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort (Lot 900, Madaffari Drive; 08 9949 0000)-- on request. The Exmouth Bus Charter provides an airport transfer service (08 9949 4623).

By Car: Major hire car companies have offices in the town including Hertz (08 9949 4610), Budget (08 9949 1534); EuropCar (08 9949 2940) and Avis (08 9949 2492).

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

The currency is the Australian dollar. ATMs can be found in the local IGA shops, Caltex, Mantarays Beach Resort and Westpac Bank. Most places accept mainstream credit cards.

Language?

English is spoken here with various Australian accents.

Not much to see in the town. Next time we'd be sure to snorkel here. Some on the ship had a fabulous snorkel/SCUBA experience.Read More
