A welcome escape from home and winter but a bit unadventurous

We booked this cruise over a year ago as we've never been to the Isles of Scilly and it'd be rather difficult for us to visit by other means. This time of year can be a bit risky as the ships have to tender at all times and autumn is often a time of high winds and seas in the Western Approaches but on this occasion, luck was with us and the weather was ideal for landing. 

Boarding at Dover was as easy as usual with the efficient included Saga car service and we sailed with an almost full complement on time. Dining on the first evening  on any Saga cruise is often rather unsatisfactory as, to my knowledge, the speciality restaurants are not open and Saga give you an allocated slot to dine in the Main Dining Room or the Grill (identical menus). This may not suit but is not onerous, however on this occasion we had a 1945 slot in the MDR and  a queue had developed with some unhappy passengers ahead of us. Many wanted tables for two and the harassed Maître 'D made a wrong call to send folk up to the Grill with the promise that there was immediate space, There wasn't and they returned - at the back of the queue! We were happy to share and got in without much delay.

However this was the only dining issue we experienced and we got a slot to our liking in the excellent Italian Amalfi restaurant later in the week without too much trouble. The Filipino's interpretation of Italian waiters was great fun. On short cruises you usually only get a chance to eat in one of the three speciality restaurants although we found that if you popped along at opening time they released any unreserved tables for that evening. The ship also did lunches in two out of the three restaurants on the two sea days on a 'first come, first served' basis which was well used. 

A day at sea helped everyone settle in with lots of lectures, classical music, quizzes available and we made our first call at Cobh in Eire. A delightful little town near to Cork with very easy access and attractions like the Emigration museum right next to the ship. The history of Cobh is not exactly glowing as emigration was obviously a very sad period in Irish history - added to which Titanic made her last call there and Cunard's Lusitania was sunk by a U-Boat right off the port in WW1! One guide told us that the town was now the drug capital of Ireland as well.

On to Hugh Town on St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly. Unfortunately the Captain didn't manage to beat the other ship in to the anchorage (Hapag Lloyd's 6-star 'Europa') so the Germans managed to get their towels on the loungers first - in this case they won in the tendering stakes. Hugh Town is obviously sold out to tourism. To us it seemed a cross between Cromer and Kirkwall being apparently quaint but with souvenir shops , cafes, bars etc etc all over the village. The tender operation was in the hands of the locals who used a variety of boats (some open to the elements) and every tender went from the same quay which was a recipe for confusion and delay. The Captain was obviously unhappy with the situation but couldn't do anything about it. The island's ability to extract money out of tourists was almost unlimited. We might have done better to visit the gardens on Tresco but were put off by warnings that if the tide was wrong, there might be a 1.5 mile walk back to the boats over rough terrain which would have beaten us. But surely the tides would have been known? In the event the advertised limited buggy service for the infirm apparently almost sank the island with their availability! So not really a satisfactory visit and we aren't tempted to return. 

Our last port was Saint Malo in Brittany which was a delightful call and a very pretty town. Ship's tenders this time and all went well. In fact we returned to the ship on a tender being managed by two of the ship's four cadets who were very entertaining and a mine of shipboard information.

A final day at sea completed a typical short Saga cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Saint John (New Brunswick)

We were interested to sail round the UK and see some new places without worrying about stupid covid rules that other countries may impose.  Everything about the cruise was excellent.  Pick up and return home were prompt and easy, collection from home was a real plus.  Boarding and disembarkation was efficient, as was luggage delivery.  The basic cabin was absolutely fine with a good balcony.  All the staff were friendly and helpful.  The food was great, although the speciality restaurants were not as good as the two standard ones.  The included excursions were not that great so we needed to pay extra for better ones.  Plenty of activities during days at sea.   My only moan is that they don't think a polo shirt is smart casual which is a bit silly; also I would prefer not to have formal nights as it means extra packing.  The ship was very clean and quiet.  We are 60-65 and were referred to as being "young", many of the passengers were really frail so definitely one for oldies. Recommended.

Excellent cruise all round

This was my first cruise with Saga but I have done several other cruises with various cruise lines.  Having taken into account all that is included on a Saga cruise it was the best deal for me as a solo traveller.  The door to door chauffeur service to Dover was a good start to what proved to be a memorable holiday.  Insurance was included, tips, drinks package, Wifi, four excursions, speciality restaurant bookings and each cabin had a balcony. I was fortunate enough to get assistance for embarkation, disembarkation and Muster Drill which was most helpful as I have a few mobility problems.

THE SHIP is awesome and tastefully decorated throughout.  Plenty of bars and lounges and always somewhere to find a quiet moment if wanted.  The ship was kept spotless throughout the cruise and the staff were friendly and efficient.  The Captain (Kim Tanner) and his officers could often be seen around the ship and would always give a friendly greeting.

THE FOOD was first class with plenty of choice in both the Grill (Buffet Service) and the Main Dining. There were three speciality restaurants - Supper Club (Steaks), Amallfi (Italian) and Khukuri House (Nepalese). It is advisable to book these as soon as you board as they are very popular and well worth visiting.  Room Service was available 24/7 and there was a good variety of food. Snacks were available in other bars around the ship.  Afternoon Tea was a most enjoyable experience.

ENTERTAINMENT This could not be faulted.  The Cruise Director was excellent and she led her team most efficiently.  The Entertainment staff worked tirelessly throughout the cruise and they were a very talented group of young people. The musical groups were very good too. Throughout the day there would be trivia quizzes, craft lessons, carpet bowls, darts, line dancing.  It was sometimes difficult to decide where to go and what to do.  Shows in the Theatre each night were excellent and varied and entertainment elsewhere at night was most enjoyable.  A favourite with the solos was the Britannia Lounge where we could enjoy the music and dance to the small hours! The solos would meet every evening for pre dinner drinks and then form groups to go to dinner and lunch was arranged for the solo travellers and each table had a member of the staff join them.  It was a great way to get to know the other solo travellers

EXCURSIONS were varied and interesting.  I opted for the less strenuous tours and they were all most enjoyable.  Highlights for me were the Italian Chapel and Scapa Flow in Kirkwall and the Godafoss Waterfall In Akureyi and the city tour of Reykjavik taking in the cathedral where we were treated to an organ recital, the Perlan and the Hofoi House, the meeting place of Ronald Regan and Mikhall Gorbachev. I also enjoyed the porrt of Cobh where I visited the Heritage Centre to learn about the Titanic. Other ports of call were at Seydisfjordu, Isafjordur, and Grundefjordur where I visited the Heritage Museums, Holt Beach and saw the impressive Snaefellsnes Volcanic Mountain which was apparently the inspiration for Jules Verne and his Journey to the centre of the Earth. During the cruise we were lucky enough to see whales and dolphins and also managed to spot puffins.  We actually crossed the Artic Circle  whilst en route to Akureyri and were presented with a certificate to mark this.

FACILITIES ON BOARD I especially enjoyed the Hydrotherapy Pool which is free to use within the Spa.  The pool on the Lido Deck was heated and there were plenty of sun beds around. The Spa was very relaxing and I enjoy my visit there which was reasonably priced and no hard sell at the end as on some cruises. All staff in the bars and lounges were obliging and always welcoming.  Guest Services were very pleasant and always willing to help.  

CABIN I had a Standard Single Cabin on Deck 8.  All cabins have a balcony which was a bonus.  The cabin was tastefully decorated, there was plenty of drawer and hanging space. The double bed was most comfortable, the shower most efficient, toiletries all provided also dressing gown and slippers.  An umbrella was also provided and binoculars. There were USB ports at the side of the bed for charging phone and I-Pad.  The televison offered numerous channels and it was a way to check on the daily happenings around the ship. My cabin steward kept the cabin spotless was very efficient and always had a cheerful smile.

My first Saga cruise was a huge success and whilst on board I took advantage of discounts offered and have booked the Idyllic Norway cruise in June next year, same ship and same cabin.

Background

We have been in 30+ ocean cruises in the last 20 years. Mostly with Silver Seas or Seven Seas/Regent. But in 2022 we chose a Saga cruise on the Spirit of Discovery for the first time as, post pandemic, we didn't want to fly.  We were so impressed we booked again on Spirit of Adventure..

Price

Like for like cabin wise, Saga is a third the price of Silver Seas. We lately have been treating ourselves to a Silver Suite. On Saga we had a top of the range Forward suite (B501) at over 800sqft. It cost half the price of a Silver Suite and was in many ways better. Note – I compared similar length cruises departing from and returning to a UK port

Arrival

Your holiday starts with your executive car (in our case a Mercedes S Class) picking you up from home – dead on time. Reception at Dover was easy - unlike the bunfight you sometimes get on other cruise lines

Suite

The Forward suite comes with a butler and all the extras you expect like canapés, free laundry, fruit, a wine cooler stocked with anything you might desire etc. But you also get extra special treatment. Like all the speciality restaurants are pre-booked for you - you get to go to them all on a 7 day cruise whereas other guests get just one. Anyone who has had difficulty booking restaurants on Silver Seas will understand what a huge advantage that is 

Even the internet was of quite an acceptable standard. 

Food

The food on Silverseas and Regent is top notch. But so is the food on the Spirit of Adventure. Excellent seafood - although no lobster. The Italian and Nepalese speciality restaurants were superb. The full English breakfast cannot be faulted. Service was exceptional and the staff very friendly. We especially commented on all the food being piping hot. Good choice of wines too. We had no trouble ever getting a table for two even though the ship was full.

Excursions

Then we come to the excursions. We are pretty fit ‘oldies’. Excursions on other cruise lines seem to infer that nobody can walk more than a mile or climb more than 50 steps. On this Saga cruise to Norway all the excursions we choose were 5+ miles. Indeed one involved 7 miles and an ascent of over 1000ft to Pulpit Rock. It was exhausting. But so pleased we did it. Of course, there were many less strenuous excursions. But so good to have a choice. 

Faultless

I have tried to find something to criticise. Always have done on other cruises. But, with honesty, this was faultless. 

We have already booked our next Saga cruise.

Faultless

As first time Saga cruisers we didn't know what to expect. We enjoyed our cruise immensely.  We were very impressed by all aspects of the cruise.

We loved the Spirit of Adventure's interior decor.  Our cabin was spotlessly clean, everything in pristine condition and it was very comfortable.

The crew were outstanding. Always cheerful, smiling, nothing was ever too much trouble.

The food was arguably the best we've ever had on any of our 27 cruises.  Presentation was very attractive, quality of produce first class, variety on offer very varied and we thought spot on portion size.

The three speciality restaurants were superb. Really liked the way Saga made sure everyone who wanted got to go in each one  once.

We also really enjoyed the afternoon teas too.

The craft and water colour classes were such fun and so enjoyable.  Amazingly, my husband was allowed to keep his  super box of paints, brushes and palate.

At first glance you do appear to be paying a lot for the cruise but the door to port and port to door car service is a HUGE bonus. You literally don't have to spend a penny extra at all if you don't want to.

We only did one of the included tours as the are primarily for those who have mobility issues etc, if you are very active like us, we found them too restrictivve. Really is just a drive around with a couple of short photo stops.

We hugely enjoyed all our dining companions... we chose most of the time to opt for a 'sharing table', had the feeling most of the cruisers were 70 + and some were very old... we had an amazing evening sitting with a 97 year old man... such a character! Obvioulsy Saga is geared towards the older passenger. As such,  this factor can impact/influence some things... tender ports being an instance. 

We did start to notice a growing number of people coughing in the last few days. We did feel a bit tired the last day but had walked so much in La Rochelle the day before we thought nothing of it... by the evening we had the start of a sore throat.  Disembarkation day... the Grill was packed for breakfast, and the Britannia lounge like wise, as people waited to get off the ship, the amount of coughing was very noticeable. Got home and my husband suddenly felt very cold and got a bad headache... of course we then tested positive for covid.  I then rang Saga to tell them.

From our wonderful experience we'll definitely be going with Saga again.

lovely ship, superb food, wonderful crew - we had a fantastic time!

I put down a deposit on a pair of Saga cruises in March 2020 for a 2021 cruise date. Poor timing, eh? It wasn't until three years later that I finally boarded the Spirit of Adventure to go on two different back-to-back cruises than I had initially booked. 

I chose Saga not so much for the itineraries but for the ship. And for what I had read about how they welcome solo travelers. I was not disappointed. Not only are 20% of the cabins designed for solos to travel in comfort -- with a private balcony -- but the crew and even the other passengers are welcoming. Even though I was one of only two or three Americans on each cruise, I felt very much at home as soon as I boarded. Actually, even before I boarded, because Saga transported me from my Heathrow hotel to Dover.

It was well worth the distance I had to travel (from the US West Coast) to enjoy the hospitality of this boutique-style ship. I chose itineraries with plenty of sea days, but I enjoyed the stops. Excursions were so-so. Dining was very good. Service was impeccable. I'm booked for two more b2b cruises next year on the SoA sister ship, the Spirit of Discovery, and I'm pre-registered to have early access to the 2025 itineraries!

We like simple food but I'm very fussy.  Excellent at all meals in all restaurants – as is the service.  Attentive, helpful staff.  Food always hot.  Vast choice of high quality dishes.  Vegetarian & vegan menus available for yet more options!  Quality teas.

Table for two always available - of maximum importance for us!


TRANSPORT to and from ship

Beautiful cars, excellent chauffeurs, comfortable journeys.

EM/DISEMBARKATION

Wheelchair assistance from embarkation check-in directly to cabin -  and, on disembarkation, to suitcases and waiting return vehicle.  Excellent service!

ENTERTAINMENT, etc

We didn't take part in many of the available activities - lectures/crafts/quizzes/deck games/etc - or make use of available facilities - room service/speciality restaurants/swimming pool/fitness centre/etc - or go on non-included excursions

We did, though, enjoy the bridge sessions and, particularly, the musical entertainment groups.

THEATRE

Unobstructed view throughout, excellent rake, comfortable seating and good sound.

CON – too small to take all guests.  PRO – can watch live on cabin TV.  CON – shows not recorded for later viewing.

Apart from an excellent production on the last evening, the rest  was merely reasonable, with not the most energetic of dancing. 

TOURS

2 included – well organised and worthwhile.

MOST ENJOYED

The food, the drinks, the table for two, the service, the helpful staff, the cabin, the balcony, the transport to and from home, the included insurance, WiFi and gratuities  -  not to mention the fantastic views of the fjords!

OVERALL

A thoroughly enjoyable, memorable and near-faultless experience!  Can't wait for our next Saga cruise!

First class!

Being picked up from home is such a joy.  Taken to Portsmouth, checked in and shown to the Grill for our lunch whilst the luggage was being taken to our room.

We had been on the sister ship last time so thought we would try this one plus a bit of warmer weather would be good in winter.  The staff were excellent as usual, food selection was vast and very tasty.  

Entertaining was good, could do with a bit more variety.  Towards the end of the trip, a magician came on board call Phil Hitchcock, he was amazing and so funny, should be there all the time but obviously impossible.  

The bars in the evening also had great musicians so worth a visit especially Brad in the Supper Club.  Speciality restaurants were good but preferred the other ship’s selection.  I was disappointed to see the library was bare of books and passed on my dissatisfaction. The hotel manager called and explained due to corvid etc….. but the books would be returning on 28 February 2023, no good to us as we were getting off but to future cruisers you all have a great library to look forward to.

Only disappointment was the wait to disembark, as we had perhaps only booked 3 weeks before departure, we were the last ones off which was tiring just waiting in the Britannia or perhaps it was because we lived a fair distance away.  Our driver was waiting for us which was again, a joy to sit back and being taken home.  We wonder if we had a better cabin or booked well in advance, we would not have to wait so long to disembark. 

Saga certainly know how to look after customers.  Worth every penny, you pay for quality and you get quality.

Saga cruise to Norway and Svalbard, July 2022:

Covid testing and security was efficient at Southampton.

SOA is a beautiful ship, decent sized cabins and bathrooms, with everything you could possibly need and if there is something you need just ask for it. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful, but the service in the Main Dining Room can be slow at times. You are asked on entry to MDR if you want a table to yourselves or a sharing table of 4, 6 or 8 people. Menus aren’t particularly exciting in the MDR but are better on Formal nights and there are more options in the speciality restaurants, which are included in the price and you need to book them in advance once on board. Menus are on the TV. The dress code in the evening is smart casual except on Formal Nights (on average one a week), when men are expected to wear a jacket and tie, women a nice dress, skirt or trousers and an elegant blouse. 

There are quite a few TV channels on the TV, including BBC1, ITV etc, but as we left the waters around the British Isles, we lost the satellite signal, which left us with just a few channels and the films.Then as we crossed into the artic circle we lost all the TV channels. Note that if you are going somewhere where you are likely to loose the satellite signal, that means if you are not close to land you will have no texts, no WhatsApp and no emails. We did however have the films and there were quite a lot, varying from really old films to more recent ones.

There are quite a few activities on board especially sea days, but if it is cold and windy outside you can’t do the deck quoits etc. The rest of the activities are quite sedentary, Bridge, yoga, Pilates, chair exercises and stretching. Line dancing is the most energetic exercise on board. There is also Golf putting and a golf simulator. No aerobic classes or anything more energetic. The gym is quite good but I was disappointed to find there was no-one there to supervise and give help when needed.

There was a free self service laundrette on board with washing tablets and irons. However, as there weren’t many machines, it meant lots of trips back and forth to get an empty machine. Otherwise you could pay to have clothes laundered and pressed.

There were also art and craft classes and seminars on beauty and various health concerns such as arthritis (shows it is a Saga cruise!). Also lectures on the ports and a few other lectures on local wildlife etc. Excellent lecture by the ORCA team.

Evening entertainment in both the Britannia lounge and the Playhouse was very good, but most people don’t wear masks and I suspect that the Playhouse is where we caught Covid! We had to isolate for 5 days, with the positive test day being day 0. We were very well looked after by the medical centre, Room Service and reception who telephoned us every day to see if we needed anything. However, when we started to feel better after a couple of days we started to go stir crazy. I have never watched so many films in a such a short time! I had books on my IPad but couldn’t concentrate, having access to a balcony meant we could get fresh air. Saga needs to make better provision for people who are isolating, as we paid an awful lot of money to watch TV for 5 days!

The excursions in Norway and Svalbard were a mixed bag, those that were included in the price were nearly all panoramic with a few photo stops. Those that you paid for were of better quality but still too much time sitting on a coach for me, would prefer more walking, but the more active excursions were a lot more more energetic and involved climbing steep hills. There were also a few walking tours of the towns. Norway is beautiful, Svalbard is very grey with marvellous glaciers and polar bears! If you have the patience to stand and watch you will see whales and dolphins (take good quality binoculars as the ones in the cabin are not very good).

Spirit of Adventure Baltic Cruise June 2022 

This was our second cruise on this one year old Saga ship the first being in January to the Canaries. 

We have previously cruised ships mainly frequented by a more international demographic and were initially reticent to try Saga before the two new " boutique " ships were brought into operation. The new ships offer an all balcony smaller ship experience, capacity when full is around 980 guests and an inclusive package including travel insurance, car transport to and from the UK port, drinks, speciality restaurants, tours and gratuities. Guests must be 50 or over and a partner 40 or over. All Saga cruises start and end at a UK port so there are no flight hassles. 

The new ships are very well designed, lots of lounge spaces with plenty of seating, a nice library, craft room and card room, there is no casino or art auction area. There is a very nice spa with a free to use hydrotherapy pool and saunas. 

There are classes and talks on sea days, including Bridge classes and organised play with the teacher, craft classes including jewellery making and art. There is no charge for any materials used. 

The stateroom was very clean and well serviced twice a day, fruit, tea and coffee milk and water refreshed when needed, the balcony had two chairs and a table. Draw space and cupboard space very adequate, aircon efficient and quiet, plugs are all UK three pin and a USB charge point by each bedside table. TV was easy to use with many options including restaurant menus, accounts, free to watch movie, live and recorded lectures and shows and regular TV channels familiar to UK guests. Beds were very comfortable.  

Outside deck space provides plenty of sunbeds and seating, a nice pool and two jacuzzi pools. Sunbeds did not have cushions but plenty of pool towels are available. Outside facilities provided table tennis, darts, deck coits, some games were supervised by the entertainment staff, there is also an inside golf simulator available to use under supervision of staff. The prom deck goes right the way around so good for walking  and there are sunbeds available to use. 

Dining is open sitting, service hours are less than on some other ships with last entry at 8:30 which seems to suit British tastes. Spirit of Adventure had three no extra charge speciality restaurants, an Italian, a Nepalese serving curry and spicy foods, The Supper Cub where a band or duo play nice but unobtrusive music at a level where conversation is not drowned out. The large main dining room served three meals daily not closing on port days for lunch and afternoon tea was also served at 4:00pm. As drinks are included wine and beer is available with meals, I found the offered wines very acceptable, cocktails and spirits are also available whenever requested. A premium drinks package is available for those wanting top shelf drinks and better wines, I understand that this will be included in cruises from 2023. 

Deck 12 has the Grill restaurant, breakfast and lunch were served buffet style with crew serving for obvious health reasons, orders for eggs or other items from the kitchen were brought to the table by servers when freshly prepared.  

The evening menu was identical to the dining room all courses served by wait staff, the venue is less formal than the dining room and more casual attire is acceptable on formal evenings, dining there is perhaps lacking atmosphere but there are nice views from the large windows. I would usually expect different menu choices in a buffet style restaurant on a ship but this is not the case.  

Outside the lido is a bar area with tables called The Veranda, a lunchtime grill menu has fish and chips, burgers and hot dogs as well as a salad bar. Servers will also bring you fish and chips and burgers if you are sitting out on tables around the lido pool. They are set for service if the weather is nice. On sea days if the weather is kind, there will be occasional lunchtime stir fry's or curries served on the lido pool deck. 

We very much enjoyed the food, a special vegetarian menu was available but the main menu always had veggie options to choose from. The quality of food was excellent with exotic fruits and berries sometimes available at breakfast along with the usual fresh melon and pineapple offerings. The variety of menu items was good. The wait staff in restaurants and bars were very attentive and The Executive Chef was often around to talk to guests and ensure that all dietary requirements were made possible. He was also open to special orders, I complimented him on The Dover sole which was on the main dining room menu one evening and he offered to cook it again for me that evening. 

Entertainment was good with a 9:30 show in the theatre and then an alternative show at 9:45 in the deck 12 Britannia  lounge, dancing with a DJ or live band then continued until around midnight. The hard working singers and dancers often did the 9:45 show either as a group or solo singing, they were a talented group of young performers, the cruise staff who put on daytime events and trivia games were around for the late evening dancing to join in with the guests. Considering the Saga guest age demographic the late night dancing was enjoyed by a good number of people. 

We were fortunate to have very nice weather on our Baltic cruise, we took the included excursions at five ports, they mainly consisted of a two to three hour bus tour around the various ports, we then often did our own thing after the tour using the free courtesy bus from ship to town. 

Overall the Saga Ocean Cruise experience can definitely be recommended, the crew went out of their way to go the extra mile in pleasing guests throughout the cruise. The cruise pricing is not the cheapest  but considering everything that is included value is provided. It is easy to leave the ship with a zero extras bill, however those wanting to spend any onboard credit or cash have spa treatments and shops to satisfy those needs.
