I chose a 2 night cruise to see what the Marco Polo was like as I was planning to go on a much longer cruise (78 nights) and was unsure if I would enjoy life on this rather old and small ship for that length of time. I have been on larger ships for long voyages before. Having read various reviews I was anxious to find out if they were accurate or not. On the whole I found them a good guide to the ship. Reasonably OK for a short voyage but not for any longer. The main reasons for this are that the cabins lack virtually any sound proofing. I heard every word of the phone call that my next door neighbour was making. I was in a premium ocean view cabin. I could also hear music from the entertainment lounge in the evenings. The buffet got very crowded and it was very difficult to find a seat or a table. At times it was crowded with people queuing for food, people trying to go out to the pool deck and people coming in or just passing through. Perhaps the best term would be a scrum. The public areas were mainly only on one deck so no real area for a quiet few hours, activities were also held in these areas. The gym was very small and some of the equipment was out of order. The entertainment lounge looked old and tired and it appeared that if you didnt sit in the front row you would have not seen very much. All these things would not have made an enjoyable long trip with a lot of sea days. I gave the trip a 3 star mainly because the service was good, food OK and a shuttle bus was provided for the port stop, but the ship was really not up to standard for today's cruising Read Less

Decided on this cruise as it was going to Hamburg, and we thought it was a nice change to go on a winter short cruise visiting Amsterdam, Hamburg and Antwerp. Ports were lovely. We didn't take any shore excursions. Unfortunately, it cannot said to be the same for the ship. It looked as if the heart has been taken out of it since it was known as Arcadia with the P&O fleet. The service was dreadful. In the restaurant we waited over an hour for our main course, which did eventually come, but it was cold. The wine waiter was clueless, he didn't know the difference between a bottle of wine and a glass of wine. On the formal evening when the table waiter distributed petit fours, he just tipped them onto the desert plates. One lunch time in the buffet, had to point to staff on duty that the battered fish was under cooked. They just didn't seem to care. These are just a few examples of the bad service, the list goes on. The couple of shows were in our opinion of a very low standard. The Entertainment Manager tried to make jokes which made us cringe, they were years and years old, and not very funny. Read Less

We chose Cruise & Maritime because will live near to the port so very little travelling time & we were on a buy one get one free offer. We have been with Thomson cruises before & prefer a small ship. After reading some of the negative reviews on here I was very apprehensive but I can only say we had a great time & would sail on the Magellan again. We were impressed with embarkation at Newcastle we were on the ship in 15 minutes & our cases were at our cabin door. We had been upgraded to an outside cabin on deck 5 it was a good size very clean good quality bedding & towels. At times when at sea there was odd noises I took ear plugs with me I take them wherever I go & that helped. I did complain about one particular noise & the staff did check the next day if it had gone& it had. After a few days you get use to the various noises. The Magellan is a very friendly ship with a happy crew we felt very comfortable & meet some lovely people the food was very good we ate in the dining room for our evening meal we were looked after very well & enjoyed catching up with the other guests at our table. We ate in the bistro for our breakfast & Lunch both had lots of choice & were very tasty, i enjoyed an omelette cooked to order every morning. We took out the premium drinks package & we thought it was excellent value. We enjoyed the entertainment each evening the orchestra with a violinist & saxophone player was very good & went to some of the activities on offer & the cinema on sea days. I did not visit the spa but the people who did said it was very good. On 2 evenings there were extra buffets one was Chocolate & the other a grand buffet both were excellent. we enjoyed the ports we visited especially Bergen we did not book any excursions we had a good look round ourselves. We were sad to leave as we really enjoyed ourselves the disembarkation ran very smoothly. I think you have to try the ship your self and make your own mind up & not take the negative reviews too seriously. we are looking to book a Baltic cruise with C&M next year. Read Less

We sailed on the Astor 30 years ago for our honeymoon, and she is now owned by CMV, we decided to choose this company for our anniversary cruise, as we haven't cruised since! I'm pleased to say we weren't disappointed, as every aspect of the holiday was first class. Embarkation at Port of Tyne was smooth and impressive, with no queueing or hold ups, and we were in our cabin in record time. Our cabin, 5079, was conveniently located just beside reception, and was perfect for our needs. It was an outside cabin with a picture window, plenty of room, and kept spotlessly clean. It also had plenty of storage space, and the bathroom was big enough too, with a nice hot shower. It was also quiet, we couldn't hear any engine noise, and slept well every night, in really comfortable beds. The staff on board were really friendly and helpful, and the ship was kept spotlessly clean. The food was delicious, with plenty of choice. We ate in the Kensington restaurant every evening, and got on very well with the others at our table; their company added to our enjoyment of our holiday. My husband is a vegetarian and was impressed with the range of food he was offered, and I was relieved that the portion sizes weren't too big, which was helpful when there are five courses to get through! I loved the ship itself, not being a fan of huge modern cruise ships with thousands of passengers; this was much more friendly. And you could always find space to sit, either on deck, or inside in a lounge or bar. The entertainment was good, apart from the comedian, and that is my only complaint. I was surprised at CMV employing this person, as I found him offensive, his material was racist and sexist. But all the other entertainers worked really hard and were very talented. The Norwegian Fjords were absolutely beautiful, and the weather was perfect, so we saw them at their best. We called at Eidfjord, Olden & Bergen, and did not book any tours through the cruise line, preferring to explore the ports independently. This worked very well, and it was possible to get a bus to the glacier from Olden, which was well worth doing, as there is not a lot to see in the village itself. I would recommend CMV to anyone, and can't wait to sail on the Magellan again. Read Less

Having previously done a Hurtigruten cruise, we wanted to try a “proper” cruise. That is one that has entertainment in the evening and I get to dress up a bit. We chose CMV because they leave from ports in the North of England and we didn’t really fancy spending almost a full day just getting to Southampton to board a ship. Also the buy one, get one free offer seemed a really good deal to us. We chose Norway again because it is such a beautiful country. I travelled with my mum and my husband. As we weren’t sure what time the Magellan would leave Newcastle we booked a nearby B&B. It was an easy journey from Preston to Newcastle by car, and we even had time to look around the shopping centre next to the port before we embarked on our cruise. Arrival at The Port of Tyne went very smoothly, we had booked the port car parking and were directed to the parking lot by the port staff. No sooner had we arrived than the guys took our cases off to the ship. We then boarded a bus to the terminal and got ourselves booked in, passports checked and through security. We were meant to go on board at 3pm, but we were there earlier and there was no problem with us going on board straight away. We had been upgraded and were in cabin 6108. It was a good size, especially after we moved the beds around to give us more floor space. There was a triple wardrobe, I’ve never had so much wardrobe space on holiday before, a big dressing table and most importantly a kettle with tea and coffee. The bathroom was compact, but the shower was plenty big enough. Our cabin steward looked after us very well, and our cabin was cleaned twice a day. We dined in the Waldorf Restaurant. We all really enjoyed the food, from the many choices at breakfast, through lunch, to the 5 course evening meal. After our first day eating breakfast and lunch in the bistro and struggling to find a table, we realised that we could have these meals in the Waldorf Restaurant too, and that’s what we did for the rest of the holiday. Breakfast and lunch were buffet-style; plenty of choice at breakfast and a chef to make fresh fried eggs or omelettes for you. Lunch was 3 hot choices and plenty of salads, along with lovely desserts. I had to limit myself to 3 pieces of cake at lunch, lol. We also liked the coffee bar, with Whittard’s tea and coffee and the most divine cakes. These were not part of the CMV Premium package, but were discounted by 50%. So a lovely pot of tea served in nice china cost 80 pence! The drinks package was worth buying, just for the ease of not having to worry about how much you are spending on board. I must recommend the frozen Strawberry Daiquiri! It was my favourite drink on board, and lots of people wanted to know what it was. The cocktail menu was good, the house wines were reasonable. The only downside to the drinks package was that the only beer included was a continental style lager,my husband had to pay extra if he wanted a pint of bitter, although again it was discounted by 50%. He managed though, and was even tempted to try a few cocktails. Each night you get a newsletter with information about what is happening the next day. On days at sea there is plenty to do from quizzes to lectures to craft demonstrations. Or you can just sit on a sunbed on deck and read if you want to. Nobody pressures you into joining in if you don’t want to. The newsletter also told you what the dress mode was for the next day’s evening meal. You can wear what you like, my husband refused to have a dinner jacket and wore his best suit with his regimental tie, me and mum had the nicest dresses we could afford. In future I would take some dark trousers and a selection of glittery tops as well as dresses just to change it up a bit. The entertainment wasn’t bad, there was a show after each dinner sitting, everything from 50s, 60s and 70s. If you’re in your 70s you’ll enjoy the music. If like me, you’re heading for your 50s, you’ll remember hearing this music as a kid when you went on a night out with your parents. So for me, I would have liked a bit more 80s music, but I still enjoyed myself - I’m still laughing at the fact that I know all the words to ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree’! The staff were all lovely, smiley and so so helpful. If we got a bit lost, as it’s a fairly big ship, there was always someone to point us in the right direction. To sum it all up, I would say: A fabulous holiday Good value for money Plenty to do Posh enough for us, but not too posh. Read Less

Embarkation at Newcastle was efficient and quick. Suitcases arrived at our cabin very quickly. We had cabin 5016, small but with an extremely comfortable queen sized bed, plenty of room for clothes and spotlessly clean. We found the whole cruise extremely enjoyable, staff friendly & efficient, food absolutely amazing, plenty of activities and good entertainment. Information onboard was good, other passengers very friendly, the ship was easy to negotiate and we thought just a nice size. Plenty of sunbeds on various decks and always a quiet corner if you wanted that. Would not hesitate to book again, very good value for money- well done CMV. Don't know where the negative comments come from, if you want to pay thousands for a cruise do so, but don't be so negative - its a holiday- just enjoy it. Our 1st cruise, so have nothing to compare it with, but it was definitely a positive experience. Embarkation was easy and efficient, luggage was with us in less than an hour and our cabin was excellent. The food was great and very plentiful! We splashed out and enjoyed the “Chefs Table” one night, well worth it. We had a tour of the galley, which was a real eye opener, how they managed to cater for 800 passengers and 300+ crew in such a small space was beyond belief. It was an 8 course meal, and we expected the portions to be small, but we were so wrong! We could hardly move by the end of the meal. Crew were brilliant, very helpful at all times. Excellent excursions. We embarked at Bristol, and dis-embarkation was at Cardiff, the transfer by coach was easy and problem free. We would be very happy to cruise on this ship again. Read Less

Everything about this cruise was fabulous from the start to the finish the crew couldn't do enough for you and made you feel special they all, always had a smile for you and nothing was too much trouble, the food was amazing and entertainment was first class. Every single person on this cruise give it 100% our cabin 237 was perfect for us and our cabin steward Yougesh always kept our cabin spotless made sure we had everything we needed. Pritish our waiter was very attentive as was our wine waitress Alla Ivanova, the entertainment crew were first class every show was brilliant thank you Mitch, Josh, Callum, Anna and Chrissie not forgetting the dancers who were all fabulous, next are the bar crew who certainly looked after us very well, a very special mention to Ramesh, Klayton and Nataly from the Colombus bar who gave us many happy hours and lots of laughs in the evenings, also Sanja Lato in the showroom. The excursions and scenery on this trip plus the above made it a holiday to remember forever. A big thank you to the Marco Polo crew and we look forward to travelling with you again. Read Less

Have never been on a cruise before, so decided an 'overnighter' would be a good introduction, and have to say we enjoyed every minute. To be honest we weren't expecting much for what we paid, but it soon transpired that like many others we spoke too, it was amazing value. Check in was quick and efficient, as was parking at Tilbury. Our cabin wasn't ready on boarding, but we were directed to the bistro to grab some lunch, which was a unexpected. We heard many comparing the Magellan with other ships, but couldn't fault it. It was clean and comfortable, with plenty of places to sit and relax. The emergency drill was a bit drawn out (and disorganised) but had to be done. Our cabin was excellent (Atlantic Deck, Outside Superior) and bigger than we expected. The staff in the restaurant's and bars couldn't do enough, and the food excellent. Drink prices were reasonable too. The evening entertainment was a bit 'Butlins' however the classical 'Duo' in the piano lounge were excellent. Overall the cruise exceeded our expectations. Read Less

we left tilbury on the 31st March just back this morning. starting with the good cabin steward was great good drink selection friendly staff. boarding was fine got on quickly shown to our cabin which was very smelly of diesel and very loud during the night didn't have a good night once. staff were friendly however could not understand English at all well and seem to just agree with you instead of helping you with your questions. when we arrived we decided I would like a drinks package lady told me 26 pound a day which I didn't think was bad however as I shared a cabin with my wife who don't drink and 2 kids I was told I need to buy us all a package even a alcohol one for my wife even though she don't drink so all in all with kids I was going to end up paying a extra 500 pound just for drinks for me as kids drink where free didn't make sense. on board entertainment was poor cruise director was rushing all over the place didnt give anyone time. captains dinner he wasn't even present at the waldorf restaurant. on to ports we where due in amsterdam Rotterdam Rouen St Peter's port Guernsey and Honfleur we only went 3 stops amsterdam Rotterdam and honfluer all others where cancelled so instead of going st Peter's port they took us to Portsmouth UK fantastic that was (not) they blamed it on bad weather however owing to strikes in France me and many others believe this was the cause. many where on the cruise just to visit st Peter's port so many angry people got offered 25% of there next cruise why would anyone book after this is beyond me. WIFI was the biggest joke you can buy Wi-Fi on board at a cost off £60 for 1 GB anyone who knows data usage can understand how much of a joke that is. It is a cruise for the over 80s only lots of wheelchairs and scooters over the place. I booked because I wanted to go to the Scilly Isles. The other stops also looked good. My daughter wanted to re-visit Guernsey. The five ports all held interest for us. When we got on board I noticed a leaflet on my bed regarding a shore visit to Cherbourg, this was not a port on our itinerary and I panicked thinking we were on the wrong boat. Then I saw there was a change of ports, due to bad weather. We were being taken to Cherbourg and Portsmouth instead of The Scilly Isles and Guernsey. To my mind the only reason to go to Cherbourg is to get off a car ferry and head straight out. Well as for Portsmouth, only an hour away from home and another place very low on the want to visit list. It beggars belief that the cruise line thinks these were a good exchange. The cruise line knew of the change before we boarded. They should have offered a refund before sailing if had wished one. To make matters worse the French dockers were on strike and we never got to Rouen. Only two ports were of interest. Had we known about the change we would not have gone on this cruise. Such a disappointment, it ruined our holiday. The cruise line we felt had "made us prisoners" we were certainly taken places against our will. The ship itself held a mixture of feelings. We had to sort out problems. There were two cabins booked for myself, daughter and grandchildren. Yet they put us on different sittings, so we had to alter that. The cabins were very hot and that had to be seen to. The toilet in my cabin blocked three times and on a fourth time it flooded. The cabin was very noisy, a large notice at reception said the boat was full and there would be no changing of cabins. I and my daughter are very heavy sleepers, but we were kept awake most of the night, and my daughter ended up like a bear with a sore tooth. The food was reasonable, but not for foodies. The shows were for a mixture of tastes and some, especially the Easter Panto, were very enjoyable. The staff were all very polite and helpful with smiles (except the reception desk, no smiles there) The cocktails were nothing 'to write home about', had much better on other cruise lines. I asked for some monetary compensation but the cruise line will not give me any. That would have helped to sweeten the bitter taste. Therefore this is not a cruise line I shall use again, and certainly will not recommend, in fact I shall advise against them. Had we been aboard and the weather worsened so we could not go to our chosen destinations I may have felt a little sympathetic, but they knew before we got on and could have said something. We had enjoyed a previous cruise on the Marco Polo, and wanted to see the areas covered by this cruise. The entertainment was an added bonus. We so enjoyed Nadia's attitude and spirit that we will be looking for whatever ship she is on in the future when planning our next cruises. It is rare to find such a fine performer on a cruise ship. The shore excursions are well planned and organized, and the check-in process in Tilbury is much smoother and better organized than most other cruises we have taken. The ship itself is one of the smallest and oldest out there, but that gives it an ambiance that is sadly lacking in the newer ships, and makes the shipboard entertainment much more personal and enjoyable. Other cruise ships try to simulate the small-scale entertainment experience, but on the Astoria it is the real thing. We enjoying listening to the classical music in the lounge far more than a steady diet of pop music. Nadia's music reminisces of the days of Schubert and Mozart, where the music was fresh and original. Read Less

Wanted to see northern lights in Iceland but was way to expensive to stay in Iceland. Cruise was a cheaper and nicer way to travel plus saw faroes, shetlands, orkneys and London as a bonus. Traveled from Canada to Amsterdam to meet cruise. So... great ship for older people, very wheelchair and handicap assessable. Crew where constantly cleaning ship to prevent outbreaks which I came across on other cruises. Crew where very friendly and food was for the most part nice. ( would definitely recommend on ship restaurants to buffet.) Breakfast at buffet was not the best. Sausages ,bacon , eggs under cooked. Tea time was very enjoyable, Cons Not a lot of stores on ship, but my husband liked that. Planned on board events could have been better organized. Could not participate in some limited person art classes as people showed up super early and sign up list was ignored. Had some price problems with new drink package but was resolved. Disembarking was messy as it bottle necked at the one exit. Pros Older people... no kids. Rooms where nice and clean. Interesting events. Reasonable price trip. Read Less

We looked forward to this cruise for nearly two years and within three days of leaving port we started coughing. My husband held up but I got steadily worse until I had to sleep dosed up with paracetamol, which was all we had,for thirty six hours whilst my body (which is fit) tried to sweat out the infection. Thank goodness I had had the pneumovac last October or I truly believe I would be dead. I haven't eaten for five days as nothing stays down and seven out of eight people on our table fell foul of this infection, most of whom have severe medical conditions to start with. I got home this afternoon and thought I would check if there were reviews about sickness on board. It beggars belief that passengers are routinely subjected to bacterial infection and laid low when what they paid for was a holiday. Are there no controls over this from a public health viewpoint or is the fact that the ship is registered in Nassau a license to kill? This vessel desperately needs a deep clean in the clinical sense, not just hand gel, which was pumped at us at every turn and does absolutely nothing for airborne respiratory infection. We joked about how many ambulances would meet us at Tilbury and sure enough we saw one there waiting as we docked. As it is Easter weekend I hope that I can survive until a GP appointment is available next week. Briefly reviewing the other aspects of the trip ( when I was still standing), the food was nothing to look forward to and the chocolate buffet sculptures were painted polystyrene. Entertainment provided by the dancers and musicians was done with energy and enthusiasm but the rest left me cold, especially the comedians. One guest speaker was not overly articulate and so full of his own importance that he got cross when the captain came on to give his daily report. This was a regular time and outside of that allocated to the speaker who seemed to think he should take precedence. The days at sea were life lost to the three little pigs syndrome when passengers came earlier and earlier to spread books, towels and anything else over seats to secure a base in all areas of the ship. The standard of human behaviour was disgusting but I guess that wasn't down to the ship's crew although they could have policed it better. The crew, in my experience, were happy and obliging and had somehow overcome the infected atmosphere in which they live. All in all this has been a steep learning curve. I am home thank heavens and breathing fresh air once more but I still feel extremely ill and wish I could stop this happening to other unsuspecting passengers in the future. Read Less

We choose the cruise because of the places it visited. Almost immediately we realised the number of people with mobility issues, were frail and elderly or had other serious health issues who were on the cruise. As we embarked we followed an elderly couple, she was in a large wheelchair and he used a walker with a seat on which he had 6 large carrier bags which make it too large to get on board without the help of two crew members. It took a further 4 crew to get his wife on board. At the safety exercise it became more apparent that the people who have mobility issues would not be able to participate in climbing up two flights of stairs to the lifeboats. The exercise lasted over an hour. I would estimate that 30/40% of passengers had mobility issues or were frail & elderly. I do not know how the company work out how many disabled passengers they can manage safely or how they risk assess passengers based on the Medical Declaration we were asked to complete a week before we travelled. Looking at the deck plans there are only 4 disabled accessible cabins. Many passengers had falls when the sea was rough and had black eyes, bandages & plasters. One elderly lady had 6 stitches in elbow and other injuries when her husband fell on her. Like others have mentioned many people including me went down with bad chest infection - hard cough, high temperature and bad chest. Again a large number of passengers were affected. My husband & I would not Travel with this company again and would check on the Safety and Risk Assessment s that are carried out before we cruise again. The Bistro , as others have said was overcrowded with too many people filling too small a space - avoid at all costs Read Less

Like many, we had read some of the mixed reviews about CMV's Columbus but have to say they really did a great job. Embarkation was, however, chaos. The terminal building seems ill-equipped to handle 1500 or so people, with inadequate basic facilities such as toilets and refreshments. Many people had traveled a long distance and refreshment facilities were wholly inadequate. Once on board, the Columbus is spacious but has a small ship-feel. Everything was bright and fresh, colourful carpets and furnishings are warm and welcoming. The cabin was MASSIVE ! one of the largest we have ever had for sure! The staff in all areas of the ship were really lovely. Our cabin steward was equally lovely! Entertainment was terrific and there is tons of space in the Palladium show lounge and staff serve drinks at your seat. The waterfront restaurant is a lovely venue and all of the food we had during this short cruise was delicious. Bars and nightlife venues were great, full of atmosphere too! CMV offer an all inclusive drinks package at just £17 per day, which is excellent value for money. There is plenty of space on board Columbus and nice places to stroll or sit in sheltered areas on deck, even when its cold. The Jade Spa on deck 2 has a lovely sauna and steamroom (free) which again, was one of the best I have seen on a cruise ship. All in all a great experience. sadly, disembarkation was chaos again. Huge queues of people standing outside in the bitter cold, waiting for bus transfer to the car park. If they sort out the embarkation and disembarkation procedures things would be a whole lot better! Did the Christmas Cruise to Hamburg, Amsterdam, was excellent. The ship Columbus was great. I didn’t do the drinks package this time but have booked the Christmas cruise 2018 and have done the drinks package. It is very good value especially for cocktails and spirits etc. Highly recommend it. There is entertainment in some of the bars and in the main reception area you can listen to some excellent pianists. You can also have your photo taken by a professional photographer and then see them on the wall. You can pamper yourself in the spa with a massage, facial, jacuzzi etc. That done then go to top deck and have a lovely cream tea or sandwiches and cakes. The food is amazing and the staff work really hard from one meal to another. I am really looking forward to the next cruise and hope it will be as amazing as the last one. Read Less

I chose this cruise as a Christmas present for my husband and thought it was a bargain as it was advertised as "buy one get one free", if this had been the case I would have been very disappointed as it was not worth the money I paid let alone twice the price. The embarkation/disembarkation procedures were ridiculous with lots of being told to take a seat and wait. The cabin was clean and comfortable but way too hot even after the temperature control was fixed. The crew were pleasant and helpful. The real low point was the food, we were given a card on the first night telling us which restaurant we were to eat in and what time, we were seated at a table with 4 strangers (although they were very nice people and other diners frowned and tutted at us for laughing), but the food was awful and we were rushed from one course to the next without time for breath. The following night we chose to eat at the buffet which was even worse. The breakfast buffet was dreadful, although there was plenty of choice, there is no place for mayonnaise in scrambled egg! Lets start with with the good. The shower was hot, the bed was comfortable and the food was generally good at dinner. The Christmas and New Years dinners were excellent with wine included. This "good" was short - now lets start with the bad. We were on the fifth deck,on the wall above our head was a folded bunk bed which stuck out far enough to knock our heads as we sat up in bed. another bunk bed was on the far wall. The air con.control was on the ceiling and did not work.The small TV was up high in a corner, but no problem, no channels were available except for a couple of days. The worst complaint was water running down our window in the morning, so badly towels had to be placed under to catch to water. After a few days we were moved -no bunk beds. We dined in the Kensington Restaurant,the food was good but badly presented with spills on the edge of the plates.The waiters were not trained, on our second evening our waiter could not be bothered to give any fresh knives and forks at our table so he so he just left the dirty ones on plates and told us to use them again! The next evening he was replaced with an excellent waiter (should be with the "good" list). Lunch was poor with a feeling it was using some leftovers from dinner, poor selection and frequently cold. Breakfast was fine but not the smoked haddock,like cardboard in colour and texture. Raffles,the self service buffet, is a disgrace. Very poor selection, food cold and waiters completely disinterested who spoke little English.many times nowhere to sit.I asked for a mint tea, the waiter picked up a tea bag with his hands dropped in a cup and passed it to me. when I questioned if this was mint he removed the bag sniffed it and then returned if to the cup! I found my own tea. The ship is very old and it shows. The heating did not always work and it was very cold. During bad weather it handled badly,very noisey with bangs squeaks night and day and the ship did rock and roll in any bad seas. Lack of seating in all public areas. The card room ran out of cards.The theatre was comfortable but always cold. Two lecturers one knew his subject but no talker, the second just read from notes. The entertainment was the worst I have experienced, I would say end of the pier stuff but this would be an insult to any pier. This was a budget cruise and is not for anyone who has cruised on a better line (any other line) This is certainly not for anyone with walking problems as they were not considered in any way. We chose this cruise following some research and wished to see the Northern Lights from the ocean as opposed to land, would have been better to have viewed from the land again. The Magellan and CMV are best avoided until they can organise this type of cruise, and they are fortunate enough to have a great team of staff, awful management though. It seemed as though 30% of our time was spent in queues, embarkation was poor with the car park located a distance away opposite Tilbury railway station with a bus pick up service, then when e returned to join the queue a rather excessive delay with the ubiquitous photographer awaiting us. Located the cabin and eventually our luggage arrived, in two separate lots, cabin was very hot and chambermaid showed us how to turn down the heating, a card informed us of our table number and dining time. Disembarkation was a further exercise in the sport of queuing as the cards and machines were incompatible with the delays unacceptable and not user friendly for wheelchair users. Breakfast in our appointed restaurant closed at 9 am so a lie in meant joining hundreds in the Bistro, Raffles, no seating nor mugs available in this area. We landed at Ports where due to it being a Sunday all was closed, the Captain, changed mid cruise, decided to miss Trondheim as he was running late and there was a sea swell, so we proceeded to a small village after two days at sea, yet another closed village. We were on Holiday. The cruise director mentioned that Bergen had a lovely farmers market and a fish market, but couldn’t be bothered to find out if was actually going to be there or open! Have a visit to the Cathedral for £29 leaving for a 20 minute drive at 10:00 to find the Cathedral wasn’t open until 15:00 a phone call or a peek at the web site would have given this information. We paid extra for a window, this was then boarded up, for safety reasons! In spite of leaving Bergen early, following a delayed arrival, he missed the Pilot at 3 am resulting in a 8 hour delay, up at 6 am on this morning and no announcements about the delay until almost 9 am prior to an announcement and that we could now remain in our cabins until 15:00, in fairness lunch was provided. We have just returned from a 6 day cruise on board the Magellan. When we arrived, we found the staff really helpful and friendly and within 20 minutes of checking in, we were on board the ship. We had a Seaview cabin on the 7th deck, which was more than adequate for our needs. The walk in shower was a good size and the bed comfortable. The cabin steward was excellent, keeping our room clean and provided guidance and assistance throughout the cruise. We found all of the restaurants clean and well presented, with a good and ample selection of food. Our evening meal was in the Kensington. Due to health problems, I am often restricted with what I can eat. Maryo was so helpful each day ensuring that my diet was catered for. Something I really appreciated as he didn't make me feel a nuisance. All in all we found the whole experience on board a pleasure and we would definitely recommend the holiday to others. We have already booked for 13 of our friends to join us on board for a Christmas overnight stay. Read Less

we wanted to try and see the northern lights at the northern tip of europe. The Magellans itinerary ticked all the boxes for us. We did indeed see the lights both from a shore excursion and from the ship's deck. it is a bucket list experience and were glad we did it. The service was excellent - staff worked really hard to make the experience enjoyable. nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was good although a little predictable, but choice in the bistro was somewhat limited. Seating in the Raffles area is limited and resulted in several long waits for a table. i don't know how they could improve this as there didn't seem any available room to fit in extra tables. The entertainment was good by both dancers and guests. The shore excursions were well managed and the guides were really well informed. All in all we enjoyed the cruise and would travel with CMV again. Read Less

We have recently returned from CMV's cruise of European cities. The ship looked inviting with attractive public rooms and a clean cabin with ample storage space. Unfortunately the cabin and public rooms were very cold with cold air conditioning blasting out in October in the North Sea! Complaints from many of the passengers brought about no noticeable improvement or explanation. The corridors seemed to be heated but nowhere else. So I would definitely not recommend this for any winter cruises. Another issue with the ship was the food. Although the breakfasts were quite good the main courses of lunch and dinner were generally poor and often garnished with a highly unpleasant gravy or sauce that tasted as if it came from a packet. Desserts were unimaginative and unappetising. While I am aware that this was a budget priced cruise it was disappointing. It seems standards have slipped since we first went on a CMV cruise five years ago. Perhaps the management should be less absorbed with expanding their portfolio and more with improving standards on their existing ships. The service in the dining room was very good, also the cabin steward. Service in the bars was perfunctory and joyless. The entertainment in the show lounge was very good. Arrangements at the ports of call were efficient, however this was cancelled out by the complete chaos and ineptitude of the arrangements at Tilbury, particularly in regard to shuttling passengers to the car parks. Travel thousands of miles across storm- tossed ocean to cruise the St Lawrence River by night and see all the pretty flashing lights on the navigation aides along the length of the river. Watch burning cinders spewing from the funnel over the decks as we incinerate the on board rubbish and pollute the sea. By day relax on the open decks surrounded by reeking ashtrays, cigarette smoke and crew members varnishing the taffrails and re-caulking the deck under your feet as you queue for chips. Take a trip ashore in one of our skilfully manned tenders. For your enjoyment we will lose our way in the fog for an hour whilst trying to return to the ship and for thrills re-embark you at midships on the windward side of the vessel for you to experience the 2-metre rise and fall of the swell as you try to get a footing on the landing stage. Break a leg folks! Dine in our fabulous restaurant and watch as your dinner and long-stemmed wine glass slide gracefully across the table and onto the deck where the glass shatters into a hundred pieces while the waiter pours hot coffee down your neck. Have fun in your cabin trying not to cut your feet on the broken glass from the litre glass bottles of water which have slid off the dresser and smashed on the deck, soaking the carpet and your clothes that have been thrown from the open drawers of the dresser. Have fun staggering along the deck and up companionways to reach a toilet because a crew member is in your cabin bathroom replacing and sealing the shower wall. Qualify for NHS hearing aids on your return home by sitting through several of our showtime presentations by our singers. (NB. It is pure conjecture that no whales have ever been seen from the ship because the singers perfectly reproduce the whale alarm call). Finally, watch the Northern Ireland authorities emergency response as we sail into Belfast with the Red Ensign upside down and the Captain, speaking from bridge, teaches the crew some new Russian vocabulary. If you are queueing on a beach awaiting evacuation in the face of a pursuing army then board this vessel. Those are the only circumstances in which this should be done. Read Less
