Before going on the cruise I read these reviews and thought to myself how can a big cruise company have a ship that bad? But the ship was great, everything was nice, food wasn’t bad and overall I had a very nice time. The room my family and I took had a balcony which was really nice and big. The cabins weren’t that small and 2 people could and will comfortably live in them. The restaurant on the 2nd and 3rd floor was really good, and so was the pizza restaurant on the 9th floor, but the buffet on the 9th floor was good but not the best. The negatives of the ship were that everything is expensive on the ship and the WiFi was really, really expensive. But literally everything else on the ship was really nice, would recommend for everyone to go on it. If you go with a positive attitude then you will be guaranteed a great time. Read Less

Summary - if your only language is English, it is best to avoid, it is heavily weighted towards Italian, including language, entertainment, food, majority of guests. You Que for almost everything, a lot of items were extra cost and it is not a budget cruise. Quick tips – Avoid Costa if you can only speak English. Carefully select your drinks package to suit, select your evening meal timings to suit (early is 6.45 seated, late is 9.30). Service charge is automatically 10 Euros per person, per night. If you port at Dubrovnik it is KN not Euro in most shops. Do not let your internet package run out, as you can not top it up then, it has to be re-purchased (up to 100 Euros per device) Non of the staff were helpful when it came to being charged or overcharged with anything. Full Review - We booked this cruise as a bit of a last minute choice, we had the itinerary in mind and only had 2 options, Costa or Norwegian Star, I should have read reviews but instead went off photographs, which made the cabins look dated on the Norwegian, so went with Costa. The ship itself is nice, our cabin was ok, although I am not used to cruises, so it felt a bit caravan like, I am unsure if this is across all cruise ships. We upgraded to an unrestricted balcony view room, as we liked the idea of seeing where we were going on a first cruise, this was worth it, as it was great to see it leave and arrive at Ports, or gave us something to look at. Food - Evening set meal times in main restaurant are not ideal, 1st seating is a 6.45 which for some days is too early and 9.30 which by the time you eat, is late. You do not get to switch between meal times, so decide and request before you go. If your going as a couple, have to sit with strangers at this meal, if like me then that is not for you, the choices are buffet or pay for one of the other restaurants. Buffet was very repetitive, you had to que much of the time, but there was a large selection and nice food, it is all self served, including drinks, so there is no service as such. There are set meal times, anything outside of this is charged like mini bar, room service, any other restaurants, including the burger and pizza, which are served from the buffet area and in the same seating area which is a bit of a cop out. Drinks - You can choose a drinks package, be careful which one, as its very labelled on what you can or can’t have, anything above your drinks package is charged. Ours for example was the brandino, which included branded drinks but not bottled water or cocktails/champagne, which apart from the water did not bother us, but as they ask you to not fill water bottles from the vending machines, you have to keep refilling small glasses or pay for the bottles (3 euro). Vending machines only had juice at breakfast time, all other set meals were water, or tea/coffee, alternative drinks are all a visit to the bar for a drink, in which case you have to que up, most of the time. Service - Majority of the staff were friendly, there were a few that because of the language barrier, just didnt want to know. There is no drinks service by the pool, so it’s all ques at the bars. There is no pool side service, although at the main bars inside there is table service. You are automatically charged 10 euros per person per night for a service charge too. Entertainment - Being a cruise ship, there is a fair few bits to do and a good schedule, however it is largely Italian based, including evening, with a large language barrier. Pools - Larger indoor pool, with a screen and more entertainment, does have a sliding roof but doens't seem to get a lot of sun, outside pool is small and full of children, not many sun loungers although this is one of the main areas for bathing, also saw staff taking away towels when people had only just gone in for dinner or drinks, I can understand if they are trying to reserve for hours but this caused arguments. Destinations - This was the best part, I felt you got a good amount of time at most locations, although some are early and some are leave just after mid day, I got to see some lovely locations in a short space of time, whilst resting between locations, this is what it was all about for us. Getting on and off the boat was very organised too. Although they had to change our Mykinos stop to Athens due to bad weather. Read Less

Crosieres as sales agent failed to give us important details such as the programs on the cruise till the last moment. The standard answer was ýou will get it with the ticket' which arrived 72 hours before the trip commenced. By that time all important excursions were already booked by other guests. This means other guests knew how to book excursions but Croiseres as agent never told us despite my repeated asking about it !! We chose and paid for two window view cabins. To our horror we were given cabins 4297 and 4323, both of which had large motors installed outside the windows. Thus the views of these windows were completely blocked !! I have attached the photo for readers quick reference. After boarding the cruise the hospitality desk the staff completely disowned there responsibility to change the cabins. We explained to them that our payment and booking of the cabins were confirmed for open views of the windows. Costa hospitality staff refused to give us alternate cabins. Eventually we had to go for higher category of balcony cabins 7232 and 7235 for which we had to pay extra 500 Euro for each cabin. This was a totally unacceptable behaviour of Costa Staff towards the guests. We felt we have been exploited and cheated by Costa and its agent Croisieres. On the final day of return we were diverted to Trieste port. We repeatedly told Mr Alex, who was coordinating the disembarkation process, to give us a coach connection to the Venice Airport as we had our onward flight to Vienna at 2,45pm on 8th June. He promised us that this has been arranged and he gave us Red B exit baggage tags to confirm the same. When we tried to board the coach for Venice, Costa's staff Mr Fabio, another Costa staff, forced us to take our luggages out of the coach. He showed us a passenger list which didn't include cabins 7232 and 7235 for transfer to Venice airport ! This gives us a feeling that either Alex mislead us throughout promising the coach transfer to Venice airport or Fabio behaved as a very rude staff completely disowning Costa's responsibility to take us to Venice. It must be mentioned that Costá Luminosa was delayed by 3hr and 30 mins while returning and it dropped the customers at Trieste, 150 km away form the contractual disembarkation port of Venice'. Eventually we had a take a taxi from Trieste to Venice airport to catch our flight. We had to spend 300€ for this emergency taxi trip simply because Cosat couldn’t return to Venice port by the scheduled time! On the whole it was a very bad cruise with Costa. ...'Never Cruise again with Costa' is our conclusion. Read Less

Our fifth Costa cruise and second time on Luminosa. This was probably the best so far. Impossible to fault at the price (7 days for £600 each incl lunch and dinner drinks package). Food was excellent, staff courteous, friendly and helpful without exception. Entertainment thoughout the ship was great, all musicians being excellent and great dance teachers. Shows were fantastic, especially the acrobatic act. Only exception being the ventriloquist. The ship was spotless throughout though we would have liked to have seen more use of the hand gel dispensers. Costa are a bit lax on enforcing the use and there are none on entering the restaurant. Most were not using them in the buffet so everybody was handling the tongs and then going straight to their food. Best way to spread germs. Fellow passengers seemed more polite and friendly than on some previous Costa cruises. All in all top marks though it does still irk to pay for water at the dining table. We had a drinks package thrown in so didn't affect us. It would be good too if some free food was available late evening but guess the price is low. Also noticed Costa have dropped the evening cabin service. Again not really an issue to us at this price level. We don't do excursions so can't comment but tenders etc seemed well organised. Having chose this cruise for its destinations, we where surprised to find that this ship was exceptionally old and the food was exactly the same. The food in the buffet was unappetising and always luke warm and most times cold. The lack of hand sanitation was incredible, every other cruise we have been on there has been hand washing stations all over the ship, not on Costa! Yet there are signs and displays saying about washing hands etc, though no facilities. No waiters to take your drinks order on Piu Gusto package, if you didn't drink wine or water you had to go to the bar your self. The dining room was ok but the food wasn't much better and the noise as several times the staff and crew decided to do impromptu dances etc and to celebrate the captain or crew making a grand entrance that ruined dinner. The crew very rarely smiled and the poor waitresses in the bars etc mainly all philapino bless them working 15 hour days and hardly any appreciation though the captain and crew expected us to do a song and dance for him doing his job as they where. Also this is a multinational boat be prepared for exceptionally loud announcements in several different languages, the last being English so if the boat was going down we would have drowned! Dining the food was often repetitive and luke warm or cold, the waiters did their best with the tools they had. Activities we did not take part in any though there was some dotted all around. Cabin staff where ok but only came once a day. Most of the staff where ok but the odd few did spoil it by not even being able to smile. Entertainment was ok but also a bit repetitive as with a lot of other things. the bulk of the passengers where italian as its an italian line. Alas some passengers where quite rude and abrupt which spoilt the whole experience The worrying thing is Costa will not read this and wont respond so it will just continue, this was like going from first class to economy! I cannot fault the staff, who always wore a smile, however such a lot would appear to have changed since we last sailed with Costa, though that was on the Mediteranea. This ship was really tired and I could not believe that there were only two ladies toilets in each location for a ship of 2500 passengers, with one almost always not working. There is no waiter service in many areas of the ship, which I find a massive problem being disabled and unable to carry glasses easily and the food and coffee, was always tepid.. Entertainment was very good, but there was none on the last night, which was a disappointment as we were only on for 7 nights. Organisations was lacking in many areas including the tour desk and the photo shop, which was almost a free for all. Our cabin 80225 was an excellent size for disabled and consisted of a walk in shower room, as well as an additional toile, though I would not consider there were any other disabled facilities throughout the ship and certainly not the toilets Read Less

We wanted to take my Mum who is 84 to see Venice, Rome, Croatia, Montenegro and Athens for her first time. We always choose Costa for value for money. The crew do a great job. Can't fault bar service, restaurant service or care/cleanliness of cabin. The buffet food was great but the physical layout is annoying. Restaurant food fantastic. The ship is badly laid out. The bars and even the specialist restaurants are all thoroughfares making it impossible to relax as people are constantly streaming through. There is a huge upper outdoor deck away from the pools and children but no convenient bar up there if you like a cocktail while you sunbath. We had booked Samsara cabin giving inclusive Spa access. It was a sanctuary we used every day but facilities are co-ed which is very off-putting. Theatre shows we're all amazing and cruise director Sabrina fabulous. Embarkation in Venice would have been a nightmare if we hadn't had priority because of Mum's reduced mobility. Poorly organised and little space. Disembarkation was also a nightmare. They don't explain it in advance that there may be a long time between docking and getting to your taxi. One final point about Costa..... Wait until you are on board to book your internet package. The best value social media package is not offered on the web site and they won't let you cancel your prebooked package once on board to change it. If you take one thing from this review remember Costa offer FANTASTIC VALUE FOR MONEY. Read Less

Price and Itinerary were the reasons picked. I was quite scared after booking after I read the bad reviews about the Victoria and all of Costa's ships. I found the bad reviews not to be true at all. I guess I was on board with civil travelers. Lots of Italian speaking, but they all seem to be having a great time. Fun atmosphere. Cabin was clean and adequate and always made up. Friendly cabin staff. Food: I preferred the dinning room for breakfast. Good menu and also a self serve buffet and coffee, juice, milk available. Quiet. We were off the ship for lunch, but enjoyed the deserts and sandwiches at tea time from 4-5 pm. We had early seating and having assigned seating made service quick and we liked our waiter. He worked very hard. Food choices were kinda weird for me, but enjoyed trying new things. We did not spurge on the added price options. I was concerned about paying for water, but we had USA water on our card and always offered water with meals. We do not drink, so we did not buy or need a beverage package. But everyone seemed to have plenty to drink. So I would say the food was as good as most cruises I have been on. Entertainment in showroom was good. Happy we only had one sea day, because there was nothing to do on the ship and NO Movies! I missed having movies, even if I had to read subtitles, would have been OK. So I would suggest that you pack a small DVD player and movies in your bag if you have room. Venice port was amazing. Be sure to be up on deck when you leave and see Venice. We also got up early on day we returned and saw Venice at sunrise. Again best view of the city is on top of the cruise ship. All the ports were amazing. Bari/Alberlobelo Italy, Corfu, Kotor, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Venice!!! Read Less

I'm not sure I can even describe how bad this cruise was (for comparison we've cruised Costa, Aida, Holland-America, Royal Caribbean, and Disney in Med, North Sea, Fjords, Carribean) and we were in one of the deck 11 suites. The friendly staff was incompetent and the marginally competent staff was rude. A main restaurant waiter literally argued with my wife about the salad dressing one night instead of bringing additional dressing as requested. Another waiter would not even acknowledge your request. You would have to ask multiple times for a drink or anything else. Food...that's a generous description. Nothing on board remotely resembled it's original state. It was virtually inedible. The ranch dressing at the buffet was watered down. It was more like ranch flavored milk. We would have starved without in port restaurants. Cabin service?? Nope. Can't reach anyone on the telephone. Cabin steward number times out after 10:00. Ran out of toilet paper one night and the bar tender on the deck 11 forward was the only one who helped. They installed metal strips in the hallway one day with silicon bonding caulk so noxious the fumes woke me up. The ONLY positive things I can say about this ship is that 1) because the beds were old inner-spring it was marginally comfortable 2) the layout of 11108 suite was nice with the floor to ceiling windows and large closet and 3) the staff at the deck 11 starboard forward bar were friendly and made a good cappuccino. Ship is very beautiful and well laid out - enjoyed the central elevators. Service staff was exceptional - excluding the Excursion Desk (unless). Very disappointed in the food served - the Italian influence was missing - I have traveled in Europe and did not recognize this reported influence - a staff person reported that being a repositioning cruise the quality was diminished. This was Basic Transportation - pure and simple. During our 19 days we got sick on day 5 and remained sick for the next 4 weeks. Everyone on the ship had or have had this virus. Other than Purel stations placed in the buffet area little or precautionary measures were visible. I did email to Costa Customer Service about my experience - got a letter back that in summary said they would use the feedback for future travelers and 'To Bad - come back again sometime' - Never again Read Less

As part of my aim to cruise with as many different cruise companies as possible in 2019 it came to the turn of Costa. I will have to say my expectations were low in advance of the cruise, mainly for three reasons. My previous experience with an Italian based cruise line, MSC, had been appalling. Secondly the cruise was cheap - did that mean I would be getting what I paid for and, thirdly, there have been some very mixed reviews about the ship on here. Embarkation was typical Mediterranean chaos but it was reasonably quick. Registering payment card for onboard spend was easy at the self-service terminals on board. As we were planning to spend most days ashore we opted for a seaview cabin and it was satisfactory with a nice large porthole style window. The cabin was a reasonable size with plenty of space to walk around. Both the bed and pillows were very comfortable and that is praise indeed from me as I'm incredibly difficult to please when it comes to pillows. Initially we only had one pillow each but a quick chat with the cabin steward soon resulted in a couple of extra pillows. The steward was very good, almost OCD when it came to tidying - charging cables left on the desk were always neatly arranged on our return. Paperwork was also neatly stacked etc. and most days the valance across the bed had been arranged in some neat sculpture. The bathroom was good and although very small the shower head was detachable. Water temperature was just about hot enough. There is no night time turn down service but that's more a luxury than necessity. Food fell into two categories. The main dining room was good with five courses available for the main evening meal. Food was hot and of a good standard. Service, on the whole, was good although one night there was a problem with the tablet used for ordering and they had to resort to paper, which slowed things down a bit. The final night of the cruise they played Italian opera with some audience participation - not normally my scene but it was actually good fun. Most days we had breakfast in the main restaurant, although the first morning we diod regret our decision. There are breakfasts from around the world available and we made the mistake of ordering the "full English" The only edible part was the scrambled egg, the rest was inedible as everything else had clearly been deep fried and it was like eating an oil slick. Plus the "bacon" was the appalling streaky variety, cooked to within seconds of cremation. The other days we stuck to the extensive cold buffet which was good with plenty of variety. By contrast the buffet was disappointing. relatively small with limited choice and many items appearing every day, so not a huge amount of variety. Also, in contrast to the main dining room, the food quality was variable. Minute steaks for example were very chewy with a lot of gristle. Buffet opening hours were more limited than other cruise lines. What was exceptionally good was the use of ropes to funnel passengers through the serving areas, greatly reducing the amount of pushing in which can occur. Other cruise lines take note. We had the Pranzo and Cena mealtime drinks package included in our fare but upgraded to the Brindiamo package for €10 a day each. We are not great drinkers by any means but the package also included tea and coffee so it was worth the extra cost. Dress codes are optional. On the "Gala night" probably no more than a dozen men wore dinner jackets. It's a shame but that's the way it is with some cruise lines Three of the four shows in the theatre were from the in-house entertainment team with two lead singers to the fore. The female singer was superbe and the male singer had a good voice as well, however many of the songs he was given to sing were not suited to his voice, which did not do him justice. The other show was an exceptional acrobatic show - the standard of which would give Cirque du Soleil a run for its money. There were plenty of activities throughout the day with an enthusiastic entertainments team - although having to use half a dozen languages all the time did slow things down. Costa Victoria is a smaller cruise ship, around 2,000 passengers but for me that is a major plus - I prefer the smaller ships to the new mega-ships which are, sadly, becoming the norm. Built in 1996 she is also a little dated but that, also adds to its charm. The staff were generally friendly and attentive, without being in your face. The captain was conspicuous by his absence, appearing only for the obligatory photo call - something I still cannot get my head around. Why do people queue to have their photograph taken with the Captain then pay an extortionate amount for the photograph. If I catch a bus or train I don't queue to be photographed with the driver, so why do it on board a ship. I'm happy to admit my initial concerns about Costa were wholly unfounded. Would I sail with them again - absolutely. Read Less

you think about a relaxed vacasion, fine entertainment, nice cabin, ship in good shape, interesting excursions, see new countries, meet nice people, have a good time? Nothing of all we found at a world-cruis with Costa Luminosa, starting 5. of Januar 19 till now (30.03.19). Explanation: the averig of the guest ist probably 75, that means we travelled with a lot of guests older than 90. Nothing against old people, but that is a special thing, severel in Wheel-chairs, probably 60% of them are sick, and we and almost all the other guests get also sick, for weeks, we called it finally the "Costa sickness", worst cough, fever, inflamed eyes, even people who never get sick otherwise, got sick, mostly for weeks The ship is old and in bad shape, old dirty carpeting, lamps, floors, dishes, we had a "Samsara cabin with balcony", Samsara means you get free entrance to the spa, be aware, maybe you get there some virus there (ist ugly dirty) You want to drink a free coffee at 06.15: bad luck, wait till 07:00 or make one yourself in the cabin (capsules), You want water to drink, you have to buy it, 12 bottle for US 36,-- (packet) You want Internet: you have to buy it, but you will be surpriced, often it is not working and the Connection is so terrible, that I could´dt never open my Banking account, I had to wait for land, Looking there vor a Restaurant and asked for Internet. Looking for a movie at night; you get one (1) per day, there is nothing more The tour plan itself: we got around 60 see-days (from together 112), that means we sit at the ship waiting for the next Landing, sometimes we had 5 see-days on a row, often we had to be at 05.00 p.m. back Ankering: we think Costa wants save Money, so the ship is ankering instead of pear, that causes you wait for the tender boat and the last tender boat is 04:00, There are other 10 Things to write, but ist not worth the time. Now why is my Rating one Point and not sero? The Food is good and the Service People try their best Read Less

It was the only eastern Meditteranean cruise available at Christmas time. My family and I had a wonderful time however the cruise itself was very average. Not excellent, not terrible. I appreciate the fact that they made it feel as "Chistmassy" as possible which was important since this was our first time ever travelling during the holiday. The food was good however not always available. For example, if you'd like to eat something after dinner, your only choice is room service or a pizza - each at an additional cost unless you buy upgraded package. The service was very good and there was definitely an appropriate number of employees. Kudos to the ship for getting that right. The excursions were overpriced...I found that paying a taxi driver would give you a better tour and more for your money. The ports were good. Croatia was the highlight although pulling into port of Montenegro was nothing short of spectacular. Upon return, were delayed due to immense fog thus creating traveling nightmares for many. I heard through the grapevine that there were options to get us into port however I cannot confirm this. I would recommend this cruise to someone with the same goal as ours however keep your expectations in check and you might be pleasantly surprised. Read Less

What an absolute rip off this cruise ship is! Service Gratuity is Mandatory and not disclosed upfront. We left with a £150 Service Charge bill after a 5 night cruise. The onboard photographers are rip off salesmen! When we asked for discount on a large order we were told by the manager to quote "If you want memories of your children you have to pay for them" The bars only use bottled Pepsi so almost every drink we ordered was served flat! The breakfast buffet is abismal. Food is freezing cold....and if you go after 9 am then how can you expect them to still have teabags?!!! Actually what we were told. All inclusive....except if you want to eat at night.....then you have to pay extra! Our cabin, was a family cabin as I have two young children. The cabin was directly below the disco!!! Every night I struggled to get the children to sleep because of the noise. What a ridiculous location for family rooms. We did ask to change but were told only rooms with balconies were available which would mean and extra £700!!!!!!! First Costa Cruise and our last!!!!! Never again. Read Less

I’ve only cruises with Carnival and Royal Carribbean and this was my first Mediterranean cruise. I’m used to cruise ships having a huge variety of food available 24/7 all inclusive and tons of entertainment. The food on this ship is an absolute joke. Nothing but the same old pastries every single day for breakfast unless you want to sit in the dining room with extremely slow service. Terrible entertainment. Only a few channels in English in your cabin. The news and stock market. Hardly anyone speaks English, so you can’t make friends. We paid for an ocean view room, but there was a lifeboat in front of our window. There’s a fee to have your room cleaned everyday, per person in the room, even if your room has not been cleaned. They charge an arm and a leg for everything on Costa. The transportation to excursions are very poorly organized. Just don’t bother. Read Less

I took a Costa cruise 35 years ago, before Carnival got in the picture, and had a wonderful time with a friend for 3 nights! As I was celebrating my 60th birthday this year, I wanted to do another cruise. After reading some of the reviews on Costa, I was worried, but trusted my gut and with with them. We got a suite for my birthday. If you like to drink, it's definitely worth it! It also gives you some extra perks that you can read about. The 2 gentlemen that were assigned to our room, were there for our every need! Thank you Ganesh and Dharma! I had read some reviews that said "all they serve you was pasta!" I have to say, even though we could go to the Club Restaurant with our package, we chose the buffet a lot, just for quickness, and found it hard to even find some pasta! lol There was plenty of food and variety! So I don't know what everyone is talking about! I saw some signs saying, hamburger for $5.00 Euros, but didn't see the need to buy one as there were patties and hot dogs on the buffet and pizza! Whoever is going on this cruise and said they didn't get enough good food, probably needs to go on a American cruise ship where there seems to have food and buffets 24 hours a day! lol Getting on and off the boat, was very easy. Always seems hectic the first day, so just chill! Did 3 excursions while there and all done very well and worth the money! Our favorites were the Abberebello(?) tour in Bari, Italy and the Tuk Tuk in Dubrovnik, Well done by tour guides and organizers! there were plenty of activities on board, if you wanted to participate. Games, dance lessons, trivia. Plus they had nice bands during happy hour and the evenings that you could enjoy a drink and a dance. All the staff was polite and helpful when we needed. I just can't say enough! We went to stage show, just one late night and heard a wonderful Tenor sing, fantastic! didn't use any of the fitness rooms, but saw them and took a tour of the spa. All there if you need it! All in all, well done! If you go with a good and positive attitude and just be patient sometimes, you will enjoy it!! I would definitely go again!! Read Less

Again Noone informed us there would be a chance of the excursions being cancelled. Be warned you have to pay for EVERYTHING on this ship. Food is only served at specific timings. You have to pay for water. Also, staff is not so friendly. The overall attitude of the staff is down like they do not want to be there. We were reprimanded for using a different glass for our milk in the morning and we were also told we could not have a second entree. After arguing he only agreed. Maybe this is how all European cruises are but I do not think so. If you have a choice steer clear of Costa Cruises and opt for any other cruiseline. Read Less

This was a group trip that I decided to go on. There weren’t many staff members who spoke English well enough and getting answers to many questions was challenging. Many of the European guests were very rude, often pushy and cutting lines during meal times at the buffet, ignoring dress codes and walking in with wet swimsuits and towels or robes to the buffet. There was not much of a variety of meals. Most of the meals consisted of an enormous amount of bread and pastries. Perhaps that is the European way but, we Americans definitely were not accustomed to the food preparations. Several of my companions and I (27 in total) had been on numerous cruises before so this was highly unusual that there wasn’t a larger variety of international food. Also the buffet closed at 830pm nightly so if you were hungry after hours be prepared to pay. It was my birthday week so I was hoping for a great time. Our waiter George in the dining room was often rude, once complaining to us that he wasn’t feeling well and was working longer than he should have been (8 months) and should have been allowed to go home. Really??!! Several times our food was being served so slowly and at lukewarm temperatures might I add, that it was interfering with the next seating and we were asked to leave before the meal was completed. This put a damper on our trip as we had great expectations based on previous cruises. I’m not saying that other cruise lines are without fault but I felt a little put off by the lack of hospitality. I felt a little racial bias when it came to bar service. We were passed over while we arrived at the bar waiting our turn while someone not like me was helped immediately upon arriving at the bar. We had to tell them that we were waiting first.. I will say that we did meet several very nice and interesting people on the cruise. But there is so much more to complain about but why bother. Needless to say I won’t be traveling on Costa cruise line again. Read Less

Our very first cruise as passengers - and I was disappointed. I work in entertainment for living and have worked on board these vessels, so when we got home, I thought I'd share my opinion on the Entertainment on the Costa Luminosa. Please forgive me if my review contains technical stuff and jargon that only entertainers might understand. I can't just say it was terrible, because it wasn't, but some of it was pretty poor. I think maybe I just expected better. I might have expected too much, but I don't think so. Review of the Entertainment on the Costa Luminosa. My wife and I have just had our very first cruise experience with Costa on board the Luminosa and we found the ship, the food and the staff wonderful. My career has been in entertainment, starting professionally in 1984, and at 60 – I’m now working as a Production Manager, or Company Manager or other similar roles. I’m currently preparing a show for XXXXX, which has already sold over 35,000 tickets, and I will be the Company Manager for this production. A number of my previous dancers have worked for Costa, so I was looking forward to the on-board entertainment. On arriving at the theatre I noticed a good technical installation – Digico sound desk and the stage revolve and lifts. Sadly, once the shows started to run, things were not so good. Small things at first – I’m aware that cruise ship shows are pre-produced and run from timecode, but some of the things I observed were a failing of the house crew in maintaining and tweaking. For example, pre-show, the lighting provides some slow moving gobos on the auditorium sides – all in one colour, bar one that was green. Nobody noticed, or they did, they didn't fix it. Similarly, quite a few states features fixtures with their beams in a row, apart from the odd one – presumably it had been removed for servicing or repair and replaced, but nobody checked the alignment. The actual lighting design was a bit odd – so many basic stock effects and bog standard gobos – that I can see everywhere – just not special. The one person technically who stood out was the guy mixing sound. He was clearly skilled, and dedicated. He removed his comms headset which shows he was only interested in sound balance, and he made constant adjustments, and did not lose his focus in any of the shows where I observed him. I think he did an excellent job with the material he was presented with. In the technical department the only crew issues from the production point was the video. The theatre has decent equipment but those Vinten heads are capable of very smooth and precise movement. The cameras have remote zoom and focus demands, but the head is set up badly, so moves were very jerky. Not really an operator fault, merely nobody skilled enough to set up the head controls and realise that pan bars should be more horizontal than vertical – because this exaggerates the jerks. Staging Power flying of the slower sort always looks a little iffy – but what became very annoying was the continual flying in and out of the various screens and gauzes, and some of the moving lights fixed to the vertical drops had very visible equipment in the almost dark state – this encourages viewers to try to see what it is. Whenever this kind of thing is done, the lighting needs adjusting to make the mechanics invisible. In one show there were two mirror balls, rigged at different heights – looked really tacky. One safety issue I noticed. Scanning the audience with lasers is a very controlled effect, and this wasn’t controlled at all. I held a finger up to my eyes so I could see the effect, but not the actual device for my own safety. Where I was sitting on deck 3, the beams clearly hit the people on deck 2 seating and occasionally went up above my level. The risk assessment for the lasers would be interesting to read. The usual rule would be to NOT scan the audience. Costa seem to think this is OK - in the UK, it would not be done. The performers, however, were a very weak link. Singers I appreciate that almost certainly the tracks they performed to are common to all ships, but their range did not match the tracks at all well. Both male singers were weak in their bottom range and had little power, so it wasn’t until they could sing higher that any power was available in their voice – unfortunately, many numbers started low – too low for these two. The taller of the two was quite weak, vocally - and had very poor stage presence looking awkward in some numbers. The shorter of the two had a nicer voice in his higher range, but was still weak. The two girl singers were simply average – pleasant enough, but in numbers where they were clearly supposed to be singing in a certain style – Diana Ross, Whitney Houston etc. they were unable to be convincing. One had quite painful pitching in places. In general, the four singers were typical of the UK Haven holiday centre standard – I’m very familiar with Haven, Warners and a few others, including the excellent Potters holiday centre – which is equipped in a very similar way to the Costa ships. None of the singers met the Potter’s standard, which was not what I expected. Dancers Clearly the dancers at audition were probably competent, however I can only assume there is no dance captain, or that there is, and this person is ineffective. Many routines, and I saw all the entertainment available, were sloppy. In some, difficult to guess if sequences should have been in unison or canon! Things like split leaps for example. Simply all over the place. No symmetry and messy. One of the dancers – who looked a little older and had lighter hair and featured in some duet numbers looked like he knew exactly what to do, but was doing it at his version of the correct time, while the others did it reasonably together in theirs. He partnered frequently with a guy with short dreadlocks, and the two never seemed to gel. The other two male dancers were forgettable. Not bad, but they didn’t shine. The five girls were competent but uncoordinated – all the small things – too much hip turn or too little compared to the others – arms and legs at different angles and very varying degrees of effort and energy, A few numbers looked like they were marking, not performing. The girls also had spacing issues, despite the usual tape numbers on the hidden stage edge – I checked. They had trouble retaining shape when going upstage, especially when the lifts were up, and they had to go up and back, and the shape got lost. Small things made it messy – in one routine when they all saluted, they all did it differently. Different arm angles and worst of all, their palms – vertical and facing front, or horizontal facing down – and those facing down had some rakish angles? These small attention to detail features should have been spotted and rectified by the dance captain, but clearly this was a feature not implemented, which comes down to not just the dancers but the person in charge. If this person was me, I’d have had them in for extra calls to tighten things up, fix the spacing, remove some strange physical weirdnesses (the dancer who always turned their lip up, for example). Exits were also a bit odd – some doing some very contrived movements, others not. Some looked bored, some looked keen and excited. The Acrobats They were competent, professional and entertaining – for about ten minutes. An entire show was just too much, it got repetitive and dull. Cannot fault their performances but better as an insert to another show, it did not warrant a show of it’s own. The Voice I had low expectations and wasn’t disappointed. It made me feel embarrassed to be there. The standard of the performers was bound to vary considerably, but it was the management of it that was awkward. As a concept it had merit, but I sensed the audience were not like the Voice or X-Factor audiences out to laugh at them, and they too felt embarrassed with the weak ones, and over enthusiastic with the better ones. Picking the winner was simple. The Crew Show I expected, based on the professional performers, that this show would be terrible. In fact, it was excellent. Showing up the professional dancers in terms of energy, and one of the singers was better than the professionals – this should NOT have happened. A crew member, singing for fun should not perform better than somebody who does this as a career. The dancers and singers did not appear to have any extra duties, so I wonder what they did with all their time off? Certainly it wasn’t spent rehearsing. Show Bands I’m familiar with the ship band concept from my own limited experience on ships – I’m in a tribute band who have played on P&O, and like the theatre team, many seemed bored to tears. The guy playing the piano in one bar used tracks, and got hopelessly lost in one of the songs, clearly he can play and sing, but just forgot where he was. In another venue there was a duo, and in the venue where guests were dancing, their showband were clearly talented but playing dire music – although I have to say that people were dancing to it. Tarentellas and Polkas I really did not expect on a cruise, but that’s almost certainly me not realising what the average guest wants. Ents Team They tried hard, but so much of what they had to do was old fashioned and boring, what could they do? Quizzes – who on earth designed these, they were awful. Showing images from countries around the world, and guests writing down the countries was so dull – then they went around them all again, to cope with a few new guests who strolled in. Gripping? More like watching paint dry. So long for so few questions. Same again with the only other quiz I witnessed – identifying beer brands from bottles around the world! Really? This kind of entertainment is cringeworthy if you are under 30, and awkward for me, just turned 60. I also started to watch a quiz where the three ents team members mimed actions to movie theme music. I left. It’s also probably a country specific thing, but I resented after a while, the constant demand to applause – applause. If I want to applaud a performer, I will. In this case I was asked to applaud performances that were poor, lacklustre or in some cases, embarrassing. Conclusions I saw a number of very average shows, and none that impressed me with the exception of the crew show. Standards wise, in the UK we have various levels of performance standard in shows. In quality terms, the West End shows are at the top, with very critical attention to detail, the touring production of these shows try to maintain this quality, but there are compromises due to the differences in venues. Out of the holiday centre market, I have not seen better than the shows at the Potters Resort in Norfolk. Good staging, competent singers, dancers and musicians. The Warner holiday centres come next in quality, with Haven and the individual small group sites firmly at the bottom because their entertainers tend to be generic rather than specialists in one area. I have to report that the Costa show falls to the bottom of the list. Not entirely the fault of the performers, but the management who clearly have noticed none of this. It did not spoil my holiday, as the off-ship experience was very good, and of course the food on board was wonderful, but as my job is entertainment, I was looking forward to excellent entertainment, and it was embarrassingly poor. We shared our dining table with two other couples and they said exactly the same thing, from their non-entertainment background. Sadly - that's my first and last Costa cruise - I shan't be doing any more whatever. Read Less

This is a good ship if you are either looking for or a budget cruise or a first time cruise. If you are a regular traveller on cruises then to be honest I think you will be a bit disappointed. The public areas are really well set out and the staff try their best. The food is mediocre. The entertainment is a bit of a let down. We had 2 excellent acts on our tours but the other nights were not great. I think the acts go from ship to ship, so the best acts are reserved for the bigger ships that ultimately costs more. The cabin was well appointed. We appreciated the large walk in shower we had which made all the difference. We went on a cruise a few months ago with the smallest shower know to man. So it makes a difference when you start the day on a positive note and you enter the dining room smelling fresh! :) Read Less

It was my 50th birthday this year & to celebrate we chose a Miami 3 night stay & Western Caribbean cruise with Celebrity through Cruise 365. There were 8 of us on the holiday (family) & we had a truly amazing time from start to finish. It was our first time cruising & everything from the Art Deco hotel in Miami to our time on the Celebrity Equinox was perfect. We had such a fantastic experience that when we returned my Wife & I decided to book another cruise & stay holiday for just the two of us later in the year. We compared several deals through Planet Cruise, Iglu & Cruise 365. We wanted a cruise deal that took in destinations that we hadn't previously visited & eventually found what we thought looked like a great deal with Iglu. It was a 12 night cruise & stay deal which included a 3 night stay in Lake Garda, 2 night stay in Venice & a 7 day cruise on the Costa Luminosa. We boarded the ship on the Saturday afternoon which took around 1.5 hours. The buffet food was pretty much the same every day & very much like school or canteen dinners. Some of the stations weren't open. We had set dining in the restaurant at 18.45 but this wasn't much better unfortunately. The food was very average & the choice seemingly aimed exclusively at the Italians. As a result we only ate in the restaurant once. You had to pay extra for things like pizza, burgers & steak. We had a drinks package but this didn't include water. Coffee was only available from the drinks machine in the mornings. The ship felt a bit scruffy & most of the staff seemed a bit miserable. The entertainment was ok on 2 or 3 nights but dire for the rest of the time. I think there were about 1900 people on the ship with no more than around a dozen English people. There were over 1600 Italians. This wasn't a problem for us other than we found them to be very loud, quite ignorant & lacking in manners. At mealtimes it became a bit of a free for all. We enjoyed most of the destinations but the timings weren't particularly great. The ship had a bad vibration for long periods of time making the experience uncomfortable. Overall, the cruise was a huge disappointment. None of what we experienced was special in any way & didn't compare to the amazing experience we had with Celebrity although the price we paid was very similar. Our verdict: Sorry Costa but if you want to provide a positive cruise experience then you need to see how Celebrity do it. If this had been our first cruise it would most certainly have been our last. Never again with Costa. Read Less

We chose Costa as at the time RCL and NCL were already booked. Unfortunately we could not booked this cruise earlier in the year due to work schedule, etc. According to Costa website is “ Italy’s Finest “ with a slogan of providing every guest with a pleasant experience from our Italian heritage. We have to give kudos to the check in process, ship was clean and elegant, cabin was clean and comfortable with a balcony Now comes the best part : Buffet menu is the same items every single day. Getting a espresso coffee must be done at the bar, and wait in line for it. Getting eggs and bacon (who knows what kind of bacon it was ) it’s another story. By the time you search for the items you want, your food is cold. Of course you might think, why not visit the dining room and enjoy some delicious eggs Benedict! Well, we tried, Egg Benedicts with mayonnaise instead of hollandaise sauce. Waffles?? Imagine a piece of toast with the waffles mark on it and the same selection of items in the buffet just arrange differently, do you want a cup of Italian espresso? Please leave the dining room, find a bar and order it. Walk back to you seat and find your food cold. Or just have a cup of regular coffee and shut up Too much for Italian Costa Hospitality !!! Dining room for dinner - please do not ask for a cocktail before dinner , no no no. Go to the bar and order it. Walk back and seat down. This is not a joke, we had the drink package and the waitress the first dining night saw our cards and said “you are from the USA , you only get water “ wow welcome aboard !!!! Samsara Restaurant - €30 per person to book a more “exquisite dining “ experience. The restaurant is totally outdated. The ship is not However the menu was all seafood. My spouse is allergic to seafood. We asked for a different menu , they brought us the choices from the main dining room. We were ask for an extra €17 upcharge to get a steak. As I ordered the entrees, one of the was lamb chops. To my surprised they have been boiled then braised to give some chard to the meat. The taste ? Terrible. The pool area is very small for a 2500 passenger ship. Entertainment onboard is a bunch of crew members who has no talent and don’t want to do what they have been asked to do To recap, please take RCL or NCL even if the prices are higher. Better food and service, the crew will be more pleasant as they are not onboard a ship for 11 months at a time. Don’t waste your money ! Vacations are important and you work hard to enjoy them. This is my third cruise with Costa and I loved it. Now I am a Perla level Costa Club member. We choose this cruise because of the itinerary: Venice, Bari, Argostoli, Santorini, Mykonos and Katakolon/Olympia. We had mini suite 4303 with a corner balcony with a 270 degrees view (windy by the way). The embarkation in Venice was quick and efficient and the departure from Venice is just stunning. Our mini suite was spacious with a very nice bathroom and a shower with glass door and panel, not a curtain. Cabin steward Aileen was very nice. Now let me talk about the food, it was just splendid. Other cruise lines charge you to eat Italian in a speciality restaurant. In Costa, you have all the Italian food you want included in your cruise price and we also had the"brindiamo" drink package included. So we drank many Proseccos, beers and wine by the glass in addition to juices and coffees (Illy Italian brand which is wonderful). The lunch buffet was amazing with a lot of stuff to choose from. Dinners are a wonderful trip around all the regions of Italy (Campania, Liguria, Sicilia, Lazio, etc.). They were truly gourmet dinners. Read Less
