This whole cruise experience was awful in so many ways. 1. Cleanliness: In the hallway outside our cabin it constantly smelled like sewage. Our toilet malfunctioned several times, threatening to overflow into the bathroom floor. The white towels and bath mat had coin-size brown stains on them. Carpets are filthy and stained, dining linen does not appear to be changed, and we encountered crusty dirty plates, bowls and cutlery in the “clean” stacks at the buffet more than once. The whole ship is peeling at the edges and needs a refresh. 2. Staff: Our cabin steward was lovely but beyond that, the chances of finding any remotely pleasant staff were bleak. Bar staff were rude. Harried customer service desk staff were openly disinterested in helping anyone. Our dining room server seemed depressed. 3. Food: They were constantly out of so many things, including their advertised “special” beers and wines. We were served frozen entrees for dinner that seemed to have been barely microwaved. The coffee station was never open on time in the morning, although staff were going behind the ropes and helping themselves. The one day we ate the sit-down breakfast, we waited 30 minutes to order before we gave up and just had the specialty buffet breakfast in the same room. There was something so bad in what I ate there that I went back to the cabin and threw up immediately (into the toilet that was constantly backing up). The lack of proper food service hygiene and failure to manage the chaos at the buffet created by lack of lines, direction, etc was appalling. 4. Cash Grabs: They up-sell EVERYTHING ... there are an incredible number of non-included food items like the late night pizza and burger bar, room service, or coffee outside of breakfast times. The internet is overpriced and incredibly slow - don’t bother. 5. “Mandatory” Gratuities: We tried to settle our cash account on the second last day and were told it was “impossible” except at the wildly inconvenient time of 6:30 am on the last day. At that time, we lined up for half an hour before being sent around to 4 different places because we had requested the gratuities be removed due to our less than acceptable cruise experience. Everywhere we went we were told it was “impossible”. These “mandatory” gratuities of €10/day per person were not disclosed up front. They are not in the fine print on your booking, but are buried in a faint hyperlink in the terms (so if you printed it out you can’t even see it). The Costa manager refused to remove these charges and was quite aggressive/bullying towards us about it, although any other major cruise line will allow passengers to remove it given it’s not a legally enforceable charge. It seemed really slimy to bury the misleading “mandatory” charges info in a hyperlink and then claim we had agreed to it. Costa tries to get around the law by calling it a “hotel service charge”. Haha, right. Only they are not a hotel; they are a marine vessel. Be aware that your “gratuities” DO NOT go to staff, but into Costa’s coffers. It’s an offensive practice that’s bad for crew and customers alike. Costa, be better. Don’t try to avoid paying your corporate taxes, or to provide a fair living wage and benefits to employees with these kind of murky loopholes. If this is really mandatory and is really used to pay staff, then your company should have no problem being honest and transparent about it and include it as part of the initial cruise price right up front and in the open. This was my third Costa cruise. I enjoyed the first two. Clearly things have deteriorated significantly since Carnival took over and I will never cruise with Costa again. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it seemed like good value for money and was visiting some ports not previously visited. We boarded Costa Majestica in Genoa and from then their organisational skills or non organisational skills became evident. It took at least 4 hours to get on the ship with no regard for the elderly or disabled. The cruise was 28 days from Genoa to Stockholm. Most of the crew were not very friendly, the food was ok but always cold in the Buffet. Getting on and off the ship at most ports was a nightmare long ques along the ships passage ways or when coming back to the ship stretching hundreds of yards with people trying to push to the front which nearly caused some serious fights because of no crew supervision. Again with no regard for the elderly or disabled. Most of the shows and entertainment were in Italian ( which I suppose we should have known, an Italian ship leaving from Genoa). A lot of pre good excursions were cancelled because of the lack of English guides with some people having trouble getting their money back on some tours. We were also told by Costa that when filling in their feed back form only 9 or 10 score will be accepted for questions on the form or it will be discarded, Never agin will I sail. Costa. If anyone from Costa would like to contact me I would welcome it because no Costa represventive on the ship cared very much Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to visit Scandinavia, but not at the luxury level. We covered Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, UK, France, Portugal and Spain, albeit for only a few hours each. Our Balcony stateroom was great, the ship itself is attractive, entertainment very good and the staff were mostly personable. We were an hour late docking in Amsterdam - back and forth many times until they found the right dock...and blamed it on (the minimal) fog. Many people were late to their excursions, which resulted in backing up 1st seatings. Internet was non-existent unless you paid $10/day, and I heard a passenger complain that it didn't work anyway. In Amsterdam, the crew acted like they had never tried to sort people for cruises before - resulting in total chaos and people very late for their excursions. Coffee and "juice" (diluted imitation junk( were not available during buffet hours - water only. I expected, this being an Italian ship, that we would experience great Italian food - no. Very bland, tasteless pasta dishes, servings were made to look artistic to disguise the fact that you were getting about enough to feed a bird. Sometimes the meat was so tough we couldn't cut it with a knife. I could go on, but you get the picture. Read Less

Have just completed cruise with Costa from Stockholm to Russia back to Stockholm and then down to Italy. Total around 21 days. Ship was built in 2004. Although I suffered from food poisoning on the last night, Dining in Restaurants and Buffett was quite good. Accommodation although a bit dated was good and consider room quite comfortable with a good mattress. The waiters and room attendants were good. That is the good points. The pool area was quite acceptable. Now the bad points. My cabin was in the lower section of the ship and during normal cruising quite comfortable, however when the boat exceeded 21 knots, the noise was unbearable and the cabin actually was shaking. So take the upper decks if you intend to book this ship. On 3 normal nights I was unable to sleep!. This was mentioned to the wonderful staff!! on the Hospitality Desk and who really showed little interest which was normal practice. There is definitely no customer service in this particular section of the Boat along with the Excursion staff. I went on numerous excursions and whilst I accepted that they might have been a bit expensive I could not believe how incompetent they were. The Russian excursion was excellent. The excursions I booked to Tallin, Rouen, Lisbon and Marseilles failed miserably due to various factors like the tour guide was either disinterested, on medication or something other or showed little interest in our group. The Excursion to Rouen in particular was crazy. We had just 1 guide with more than 20 English and more 20 German passengers. No headphones were provided and the guide alternated between German and English, spoke too low, was disinterested and nobody could hear her. Just crazy. On the tour of Tallin , 5 passengers were left behind due to no fault of their own, just incompetence by the tour guide and forced to either take taxi's back to the boat or walk back. This was explained to the Excursions Staff with little interest. I was not refunded for my taxi fare!! Other problems experienced including the internet packages. Although this ship appears to take this cruise on numerous occasions the internet packages never worked or provided the service advertised. A rip off. Other little things that were charged for was, breakfast in cabin, ice cream/crepes, Ice Cream Trolley and water. Despite having a Drinks package I was unable to be provide with bottled water. Had to pay 3 Euro. Just crazy. I guess another downside was that Costa Magica was always docked the furthest from the town. Compulsory Hotel service charges were also a surprise which the Australians were not aware of until arriving on board. No mention of these charges by Touring Company in our Booking Contract. In Costa's Tour Values they state Clear and Transparent prices and no unpleasant surprises. The only trouble is that you are not aware until you arrive on the ship. As one Passenger mentioned, it is always a good idea when talking to Costa Staff to keep both hands in your pockets!. Despite written assurances that excursions etc would be paid at the end of the cruise, they were taken out on a daily basis. Another broken promise.! Many Australians experienced troubles with this cruise. I would never travel with these people again and that is felt by most people. If Costa do come to these waters, stay away. They are plenty of good Cruise company's better. Read Less

My wife and I booked this and it's following cruise through a travel agents promotion in Australia. It looked like a good deal at the time. I have been on cruises with several other companies which have all been good. After booking this cruise we looked at cruise critic and were a bit shocked at some of the reviews which led us to be apprehensive about the trip. The embarkation was ok as it can be a bit chaotic on any cruise. On checking out the ship on arrival we were impressed overall especially the cabin which looked like it had just had a refit. After that it was all down hill. You cannot get an ice cream on board unless you pay for it not even in the main dinning room with dinner. You basically have to pay for everything extra. I always have a sauna when on the ship. When I couldn't access the sauna I enquired and was informed that it was 25Euro a day to use it which is a ridiculous amount to use a sauna for half an hour. No wonder the sauna looked unused. I have never paid for the use of the sauna before. Now for the real bad. The bistro was the most unbelievable place you could ever imagine. There is no hygiene control. No one uses the chemical supplied to sterilise their hands when entering the bistro. People touch food, cutlery and plates with their hands without using same. There are signs to show entry and exit but no one uses this. It is a free for all, pushing in to the middle of the que and going up the wrong way is just normal. It is normal to get pushed aside by people who think they have right of way. There are no staff as in other cruise lines controlling this. On other cruise a gloved staff member hands out the plate and cutlery after you have sterilised your hands. I don't know if this is normal on Italian cruse lines but the amount of food taken off the ship by people going on day trips staggered me. It looked like they were feeding a hoard. It was normal to see cruisers off the ship sitting eating the food from the breakfast session in the middle of cities we visited. Gratuities on this cruise line are compulsory and enforced and as such should be included in the fare not added on. In this case I would not have paid any gratuities as I found the food average, entertainment average and the service in most cases average. Mostly Italian is spoken during shows and entertainment which is a real problem for english speaking cruisers. Shore excursions were expensive. This is a cruise line built for Italians and only Italians. In my opinion if you are not Italian don't use this company. If Costa wants to improve it's image it needs to change its business format becoming an International cruise company catering for all nationalities. In its present format I cannot see Costa prospering as a major cruise line. The only area of the ship I liked and enjoyed was the Piano Bar. The staff in this bar were the most efficient and personable on the whole ship making it a pleasure to go there each night before and after dinner. Read Less

Chose this cruise because of the ports it was visiting. Beautiful ship, although dated with some maintenance needed. Hygiene was not enforced, there were plenty of containers full of hand cleanser but rarely used. At the buffet people just dived in with hands to get food even though serving spoons were there. Noticed many people using toilet facilities but not washing hands. Many people got gastro, flu, coughing with doctors & nurses kept busy. It felt as though English speaking guests were not welcome, activities were for European guests. Entertainment was poor with the best shows being put on at dinner by the wait staff. Enjoyed the food at restaurants, wait staff pleasant, although at times their serving was like an outdoor cafe. Children ran riot well after midnight. Many young staff on who thought everyone was deaf, so yelled loving the sound of their own voices. Reception staff were unable to solve issues raised which could have been dealt with by some FAQs. Felt they were justifying their jobs! Lacked leadership. Had to pay extra for ice cream, coffee, pizza. Photos expensive, 14 Euro. Shore excursions expensive, easier to do yourself. Spa area needs a revamp. Read Less

I chose this cruise thinking it would be lovely for my moms very first cruise. Honestly the ports of call sounded more appealing than a normal med cruise. And that was my main reason for picking this cruise line. I have cruised before but always with American ships (Carnival in particular)So was expecting high standards. In fairness the crew were very sweet and did everything they could to make the cruise enjoyable in particular the staff at embarkation and disembarkation very helpful to my elderly mother taking her hand on and off the ramp, Our waiter in the evening Dsilva Dolree did his very best to ensure our dining was pleasant. (The food was generally exceptionally disappointing) And our cabin crew lovely and helpful. My main complaints were food related. Bland at best and over salted at worst. The same Italian staples came out at lunch each day same sandwiches same hams cheeses etc. I understand its an Italian ship but they need to cater to those of us that are not Italian. We don`t all love tasteless over-salted pasta. Or a main course for dinner without vegetables. There was plenty of melon on board and plenty of apples and pineapple so I cannot complain about the fruit however a variety would be nice instead of same oh same oh at every lunch and breakfast. Most people go on a cruise for the food drink and entertainment. In all of these I`m afraid i found the Magica totally lacking. (I`m not a drinker so honestly didn't pay for a drinks package because it would have been a waste) hate to say this but will not use Costa again I think I will stick to the American cruises there is no comparison . they know how to entertain and how to put on beautiful edible meals. We travelled on a cruise for the first time so we did not know what to expect. I would like to give advise to people who are in the same situation. We booked the Baltic cruise through Tallin, Helsinki and St Petersburg. I was nervous about the fact that I have never been on a cruise and I might get seasick. Luckily, we had great weather and the sea was calm. We were told that this is mostly the case on this route. You might feel the vibrations of the motor from time to time and on the bow (front) you feel the waves more than at the stern (rear). We booked a cabin with a balcony which is totally worth the price difference to see the beautiful Stockholm archipelago in the morning when you sail out and sunbathe away from the crowded pools if you enjoy your peace and quiet. We booked the non-alcoholic drink package but soon realized that for 2 persons 40 drinks were too much. Since you are out on most days and water is available all along the cruise. We kept drinking sugary mocktails, which were delicious but surely not very healthy. Also, the prices of the regular cocktails and drinks are not too high, with a bottle of wine starting at 20 Euros during dinner and a mojito costs 7,50 Euros. In summary, I would not get a drink package at all, unless you like to get drunk and party every night. The food quality at the buffet is reasonable but it gets pretty full, so the option for a quiet dinner on your table is great, although the selection is limited and you need to dress up a little. Be aware of the dress codes: There is a forrmal dinner, a white night and a Gala dinner and although not everyone in the cruise follows, it is nice to fit in during seated dinners. In my experience, staff were extremely friendly and the service was great (we ordered breakfast in the cabin on the departure day and had it on the balcony as we cruised out of Stockholm) We had the impression that most staff look happy, which gives you a good feeling. We did experience a couple of angry guests on the other hand, shouting at the customer service staff. If you do not like criowds or screaming children, there are many ways of avoiding them. The ship is so big, you can alsways find a quiet spot on one of the decks. There are many first-timer traps that are easy to fall into: The photographs, the souvenirs, the overpriced tours, the drinks and the spa. If you are sailing in nice weather, you don't need the spa. It is tiny, dark and the sauna and steam bath are separate for men and women, so if you are a couple you cannot share the experience. There are six jacuzzis and three swimming pools, two without loud music, you can enjoy without extra payments. The spa does not have a pool, only two indoor jacuzzies and a tiny relaxing area indoors. In Tallin and Helsinki do not book tours nor use the hop on hop off buses, you can take public transportation to the center of the cities which are easy to walk along if you are used to touring on your own.In St Petersburg we took the Costa tour, it offers some advantages, such as the fact that they wait for you if you are a bit late to come back, which might happen since the traffik is so unpredictable. You also feel very safe in the bus and during the tour. You might choose to take a tour on your own, bit it is necessary to have a visa from the Russian authorities to disembark without a booked tour. In all, Costa Magica was a pleasant experience and we would like to travel again on a different route some other time. Read Less

Selected Costa because was going where I wanted go and at exactly the right time. I chose a grand suite and it was very comfortable, included a butler, and specified dining in the exclusive 88 seat deck 11 dining room. Dining service beautifully served and attended to; however, the quality of the food was only fair. Ship was too large for my liking and everything was extra. Bought the top drink package to avoid hassle of paying for water and drinks. WiFi quality OK but it was much too expensive. Could not find a free ice cream machine and had to pay 3€ per scope at the several spots that has ice cream. There we no talks about port stops, only pressure to buy ship excursions. Embarkation and disembarking procedjres were easy and swift. The attention and service to the grand suite customers was very good and much appreciated on such a large ship. Though announcements were either in four languages or only in Italian, the crew all spoke good English And were all very cordial. Read Less

We have been on 10 cruises and Costa Magica does not rate very well compared to the others. We booked this just to see what other cruise lines had to offer and were pleased with the price but overall disappointed. Embarkations was the easiest so far....flawless and no lines. The ships overall appearance seems to be nice and updated. The rooms are roomy for a cruise ship and we were pleased. We were assigned seating for dining and loved the family that we were paired with but we do not like the assigned seating and prefer the "Freestyle Dining". This allows much more flexibility and not such a rigid schedule while on vacation, The food was edible but not good. Several times we tried what they brought out but chose not to eat it or ate it because we were starving.. We were also disappointed that they do not serve coffee with dessert. Coffee is only served during breakfast and at the bar. Breakfast is good and we chose to go to our assigned dining room for breakfast because it was not as hectic as Deck 9 (which is a free for all). They do offer a menu and serve you coffee as well as a continental breakfast. We were usually off the ship during lunch so we do not know how that went. The service during the Dinner was below average. We constantly had to ask for water and very seldom would pour it for you. The server would just set it on the table. Entertainment was average. We never book shore excursions with the cruise lines because they are too expensive and the groups are too large. We did hear that the ship offered a really good program for the kids which is a plus for families. One of the big things we noticed was they were not require you to clean your hands prior to meals and did not offer warm wash cloths/sanitizer to clean your hands when you are coming aboard the ship after touring another country. Hand sanitizer was unavailable when boarding the ship in some ports and the one going into the dining area did not work properly. Also, we never saw them sanitizing the handrails, etc on the ship. The workers told us they work 8 months a year, 11 hour days, 7 days a week which I am sure this contributed to the poor service. Hopefully, they were given the gratuity that is automatically added to your bill. Our cabin as mid ship on Deck 2 and we could hear the crew working throughout the night most every night. Between the food/service/sanitizing I would not recommend this cruise line. Read Less

This was the first time I went on a cruise. I went with my mother, who had previously been on two cruises with RCI. We travelled to Stockholm by train, having spent the previous night in Gothenburg. We arrived at Stockholm Södra Station and took a taxi directly to Frihamnen, where Costa Magica was boarding. Boarding went very smoothly, we had to wait for maybe 10-15 minutes before we could board the ship. Costa Magica's décor is rather lavish, with thousands of works of art onboard. Depictions of women, in various states of (un)dress, is a theme onboard, which some more conservative passengers could possibly find slightly shocking. The age is beginning to show (she was launched in 2003), and the colour scheme could be called gaudy by some (I rather liked it). The ship's slogan is "Cruising Italian Style", and the aim is to cater to European tastes. In practice, the great majority of the passengers were Italians, the rest seemed to be mostly Spanish, French and Russian. Consequently, most announcements are made in Italian, English, French, German, Spanish and Russian, which means that announcements tend to be rather long. Due to the large number of nationalities among the guests, Costa Magica staff makes an effort to seat people who speak the same language together at dinner, which is a very good idea. The quality of the food is OK, ranging from bland to tasty. Costa being an Italian cruise line, the food in the main dining rooms is heavily dominated by Italian cuisine. The buffet is more international, the food arguably tastier (!) than the main dining rooms, and we noticed as the week progressed that the number of guests declined in the dining room and increased at the buffet. Due to the variety of languages among the guests, the entertainment tend to focus on song and dance shows. These were rather enjoyable, but an acrobatic show that was on offer one night was not to our taste. We signed up for an organised excursion in St. Petersburg (if you join an excursion organised by the cruise line, you don't need to apply for a visa), while we explored Helsinki and Tallinn by ourselves. The all-day excursion in St. Petersburg was worth it, even though 2.5 hours at the Hermitage was a bit much. Service onboard was good, the staff was friendly, and especially our cabin attendant Hugo deserves a mention. I would not mind going on a Costa cruise again. Read Less

Our fourth cruise with Costa (the second with Costa Magica) and, unfortunately, we have seen, over the years, a gradual decline in quality. Both cleanliness and services are maintained at good levels; the kitchen is on the decline. For the entire duration of the cruise we had to avoid shrimp dishes because this crustacean was almost inedible. For the rest, average cuisine. As for the excursions, the two are excellent in St. Petersburg (although rather expensive), very bad that of Stockholm due to various disservices as well as an uneducated guide. It is opportune to emphasize that as an alternative to lunch, 90 minutes of free time have been "granted", from the most spent to bivouac on the steps of the buildings or on the benches of the main square of Stockholm, in order to consume the bad lunch basket, provided by Costa We have carried out, with an absolutely constructive spirit, the appropriate reports to the Customer Service, but finding a strenuous and sterile defense of office. It was my first experience with Costa Cruise. North Europe destination (Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Tallinn). In short: Embarking - just few minutes, nice welcoming by staff, photo and ID card is ready, you leave baggage at collection point and you go straight to the cabin. Your baggage is delivered to your cabin within next half an hour. As simple as is. Cabin: we had balcony one. 1 double bed and i single one. Both comfortable and well sized. Cabin perfectly clean. TV set might have been a bit bigger but was ok. Shower worked well. Dinning: we chose international breakfast option - enough variety of food - whatever you need. All fresh and tasty. Dinners were extremely good. No standing in queues nor waiting for service. Ship - Magica is quite big ship (apprx 110k tons) - means big enough to be stable but not crowded too much Service - as always staff was just perfect - smiling, speaking different languages, polite and well-skilled. Entertainment - we attended 2 events "Voice of the sea" and "Magic moments" - both worth of spending time. Excursions - we prefer organising trips on our own. Stockholm is stunning, packed and extremely expensive; St. Petersburg is incredible (mus see points are Peterhof, Tzarskie Selo, Hermitage, Nevsky Prospect, Issac's church and On Blood Church. All of them you can easily reach on your own using public transport. Value for money - J have no idea why people spend fortunes on other cruise lines whereas they don't offer anything better than Costa (maybe snobbery?). Long story short: take Costa, pay half of what other lines demand and have wonderfull holiday. Robert Read Less

The cruise itinerary was excellent, lots of time to explore some fascinating cities, and the value for money was reasonable. I was disappointed that none of the traditional Italian foods I was looking forward to like pizzas, gelato and coffee were included, all were extra costs. In addition, they lost my bag on disembarkation and made me trek around Stockholm trying to recover it, taking no responsibility for it - the tags they give you and say are needed to reclaim baggage are literally entirely pointless. One or two junior staff tried to assist but on the whole a really awful way to end the trip. Wifi is expensive and no maps or anything are ever provided so without the wifi package it's not easy to get around on your own - and the shuttles into town provided by the liner are ridiculously expensive. The ship itself was pretty nice, except that the slide never worked at all throughout, and most of the passengers were surprisingly pushy and rude. Most of the other people I spoke to who had been on other cruises said they wouldn't use Costa again. Read Less

I've taken Costa 6 times the last 4 years. This was the least pleasant experience I've had with them. The spa was terrible - they should just close it. We did the "book a service, get spa access every day deal." It was always empty (not complaining about that), but here's why: *Wet robes - wouldn’t exchange *Wouldn’t let us cancel facials 48 hrs before appt - had to get manager *Kids' play area right above rooms; rooms small, so aestheticians bumping into you on table *Hard sell on more massages/appts and products got really annoying *No water in relaxation room *Stopping people in hallways to try to sell them products *Hot tub design terrible - 4 bucket seats, jets burn *Desk attendants were genuinely unpleasant. Bonus Round: Indian bartender looks at my card, says “Heather. Sounds like Hitler. You know name Hitler? Yeah. Sounds same.” €500 credit a scam - you can only "get" the discounts by taking advantage of “discounted” rates, free pizza, etc. that "add up" to €500 savings per cabin if you purchase every single special. That's misleading advertising that they couldn't get away with elsewhere. Overall, the service staff (except the spa here) are always nice; the food is mediocre. These are great if you want to get to hard to reach coastal cities, but this is not the best company in terms of comfort and friendliness. Read Less

Mediterranea, Magic or mayhem. We have just returned from a 13 night cruise aboard the Costa Meditteranea. We flew with Iberia from Madrid to Stockholm and had a few days in Stockholm before boarding the ship. Below is OUR opinion on the ship and cruise. Embarkation. We arrived at Stockholms Fryhamnen cruise terminal using the metro system from Odenplan, a little after midday. We had stayed at the Ibis styles which was basic but clean and welcoming. The metro was very easy to use, even with 2 large suitcases and the walk to the terminal from the station is signposted and took us about 20 minutes. Embarkation had already started and as we are Perla diamente members we were ushered straight through to the boarding/security area, had our photos taken for our cruise card and directed to the buffet to get something to eat. Our cabin would not be available until 2pm. Buffet. We are not really fans of buffets as we prefer to have waiter service and to take our time whilst having a meal. We had an Intendetore drinks package which meant we could have any drink costing 9 euros or less. Our cruise cards had not been collected as they were in the cabin but we just showed our reservation slip and were assured there'd be no problem. There were plenty of tables available as we were the first group on board. We selected what we wanted to eat from a very limited hot choice and from a somewhat confusing layout where different stations serving cold items, desserts, self serve collection drinks area and tea and coffee area are scattered. Donald had ordered a glass of wine which without the package would have cost 5.75€ inc 15% service charge and i ordered an iced tea 3.30€. Halfway through the meal a young lady server arrived and gave Donald a bill to sign which was charging for the iced tea. We again explained we were on the highest drink package level and we could have any drink for 9€ and less and showed her our reservation slip. She told us that it was for drinks by the glass only and as iced tea was served by the can, we had to pay for it. We politely refused and asked to see a manager who re-iterated that in the buffet we could only be served drinks by the glass. To our suprise, other passengers were being brought beers, and other soft drinks, pepsi, orange, 7up etc which were in cans and bottles and nothing was said. We signed the bill but it was never ever charged to our account, so somewhere there was a lack of communication. We only used the buffet area 1 more time and found it to be like other cruise lines, mostly chaotic. Cabin. At a little before 2pm we went to see if our cabin was available. For the first time ever we were lucky enough to be able to get a fantastic deal on a grand suite including butler service. This was for less than the price it would have cost us for an inside cabin on an American/ British ship. There was a longish hallway with huge long table which led to a seating area with settee and chairs. Fully stocked no charge mini bar which was replenished if you asked. One wall was covered in huge glass windows with ocean view with access to a huge wrap around balcony with 4 recliners and 2 chairs and a table. A seperate make up dressing area with dimmer switch lighting. The bathroom had his and her sinks with a hydromassage bath and overhead shower. The bedroom had a gigantic bed with plenty of wardrobe and storage space. Our first steward Fidel we found to be very pleasant and kept the room spotless but his contract was ending in 3 days. The replacement steward Ronald, was very personable and nothing was too much trouble for him, he looked after us very well. The Butler, Dave was also friendly and although we did'nt use his service much, he did leave a contact number. We did have occasion to call him for 2 emergencies. 1. Water was in the bathroom when we returned late at night,Within minutes 7 people arrived and dealt with the problem. Water had collected inside the outer cover of the bath and had overflowed. 2. On our last night, whilst packing, we noticed that some of our clothes were stained and damp. Water had dripped from a cooling vent inside the wardrobe. Dave arranged for this to be repaired and for our clothes to be immediatly laundered. We arranged to have breakfast in the cabin on two occasions. This was delivered by Dave. Service was white glove and prompt and everything we ordered was delivered. You could have all meals served in the suite at no extra charge. Whilst we did enjoy the suite very much we felt that for us we would not have liked to have paid the full asking price so unless we get a very special deal again, i doubt whether we'll get a full suite again. Because we have reached Costas top tier of their loyaly programme regardless of what cabin we choose, we get 1 Laundry service, free collection and delivery of luggage from our home (within western europe) Breakfast at no charge in the cabin. Exclusive use for ALL meals in the club restaurant. 75€ obc, reserved seats at shows in theatre, day spa use (where available) plus some little extras. We feel this is good enough for us. Restaurant and meals. On the Costa Meditarranea we had most meals in the club medussa restaurant. Breakfast was serve yourself from a cold buffet and/or a waiter service themed hot breakfast, choice of American Spanish Norwegian German Belgian or English style breakfasts. Omelletes and eggs cooked to order available. Lunch was a help yourself cold buffet station with salads cooked meats cheeses and various seafood treats including on 1 day a delicious Lobster salad. You then had a choice of several hot and cold starters, Mains and desserts. Dinner consisted of waiter served hot and cold starters, Pasta, a selection of entrees, cheese, and desserts. All of our meals whilst not high gourmet were better than what we would eat at home and there was always something you could eat. Food whilst not served really hot was not served cold and was very appetising. Service was fantastic and our Main servers Wyam, Trang and Karin were an absoloute delight, indeed all the staff in the Club medussa are a credit to Costa. Most passengers in the restaurant were extremely friendly with a very international mix. French, German, Spanish, Swiss, Russian, Italian and a very few native British. We always looked forward to meal times and had so much fun with our fellow comrades. You could of course always opt to eat in one of your other assigned reataurants or the Buffet, pizza or grill. Buffet breakfast was continental only. Drinks are charged for unless you take a package. This includes Water tea coffee except for meal times in the buffet. Bars and Drinks. There were plenty of places to get a drink from however when the ship was reeally busy especially sea days, service could be a little slow but if you are patient somebody will come. Drinks on average cost no more than in a 4 star hotel or theme park. We dont really drink a lot of alcohol but there are some delicious non alco cocktails which cost about 7€ plus 15% service on ALL drinks. In order to help with drink package versus pay as you go here is an approx example. Based on some alco drinks Morning. 2 cappucino at breakfast 6€ mid morning coffee 2.24€ non alco cocktail 6€ Lunch and afternoon. Glass of wine 5.50€ 1ltr bttl water 3.50€ after lunch coffee 2.24€ alco cocktail 8.25€ evening pre dinner sherry 5.50€ glass of wine 5.50€ after dinner port 5.50€ total pay as you go 50.23€. Brindiamo drinks package (ship branded drinks no alco cocktails) 26.99€ Pio Gusto package (ship branded drinks including alco cocktails) 29.99€ Intenditore Package (premium branded up to 9€ drink.) 45.99€ Prices are per person per day. Prices are inclusive of 15% service. All of the bar staff we encountered in the lounges were friendly and all had a smile. Entertainment. The entertainment team were very friendly and they had the usual ship board activities from craft classes to port talks during the day. Not as much as on the American/ British lines, but i can never be bored with people watching, chatting, reading and charity crochet. Evening entertainment ranged from theatre production shows (very good) guest artists (very good) Disco and musicians in various bars around the ship.We found all of the music on this cruise to be very good. The Ship The Costa Mediterranea was kept spotlessly clean and the crew all worked hard constantly.British and American passengers may find the glitzy decoration a little overwhelming but it grew on us. Meal times are a little later than these passengers may be used to especially second seating and the buffet closes earlier, which for us is a good thing (less waste) There is a compulsary 10€ pppd service charge that can't be removed. In all honesty we find this a fair system and dont begrudge paying this at all. We have NEVER received enough bad service to warrant removing this charge. You may encounter the odd person but this in no way should stop payment to the vast majority of the staff who look after you so well. The passengers on board are mainly from Western Europe and some may not speak english. A few local words and a smile and gestures will open conversation and you will be greeted with a wave and a smile should you next encounter them. We got really friendly with Maryvonne and Claude a delightful French couple who we hope will now be friends for life. We had such a laugh with them and looked forward to meeting up with them throughout the voyage. The ports. Ports visited were Stockholm. Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Harwich, Le Havre, Vigo, Lisbon, Barcelona and Savona. As we had been to these ports on many occasions we only took 1 excursion. Hornfleur from Le havre. It was a charming town which we both fell in love with and would visit again in a heartbeat. Conclusion. Was the Costa Mediterranea magic or mayhem. There was a little mayhem especially in the Buffet area but on the whole it was magic and we would sail on her again. It did'nt capture our heart as much as the Costa Neo riviera Our favourite ship. We have previously sailed with P&O and Princess and had very good experiences with them but we have grown to love the Costa brand and the glitz. We have never received bad customer service and any problems have always been dealt with efficiently and friendly service even from Costas sales office where Simona and Amanda have looked after us so well. Our next cruise is back on the Diadema which is 2nd favourite and then we are giving the Costa Victoria a try. Thanks for reading and whoever you sail with Happy Cruising. Read Less

I'll begin saying that every single cruise I have made so far has been a great experience, and this one is no exception. But as this is a review, I should also point out that compared to other cruise lines and ships, this one was somewhat disappointing. The good This baltic itinerary is wonderful! Stockholm, Helsinki, St Petersbourgh and Tallinn are all wonderful places to see. There was always enough time to visit (2 days for st Petersbourgh and Stockholm) and only one day at sea, which is perfect. Our waiter at the restaurant was great: incredibly professional and efficient, it made our dinners a great experience. We had a guaranteed balcony cabin, and were upgraded to a "Balcony Premium". Really nice cabin, enjoyed great views. Took the airplane with them, and except for a delay on the way back, everything was organized perfectly. The bad The buffet was a nightmare: it felt like a battle every time you got into there. Poorly managed, very low quality, no rules enforced (not even basic hygene), lines everywhere. Also, no drinks at all except for breakfast and tea (16.30 / 17.30). Only water throughout the day: no coffee, no tea, nothing. Asked for hot water, told to get to the bar and pay for a tea. Closed for most of the day. Waiters looked like they didn't want to be there, and some of them were downright rude. It's a pity because most of the crew is hard working and really nice. I think management is to blame for that. I've travelled with NCL, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, and this was by far the worst buffet I've ever seen. One of the things I love about cruises is the evening shows at the theater. Well, the shows there were so boring! This is a pity because dancers were pretty good, but overall it seemed there was no direction. A couple of times I went out before the end of the show. I didn't like the ship. Everything seemed a bit "cheap". Plastic everywhere, fake flowers, fake statues, fake columns, fake everything. Also, rather dark and not the cleanest I've seen. The gym opened relatively late (7 am), and was not kept clean at all. Rules were not enforced (like everywhere else) so that some people were walking on the tapis roulant for hours, with people behind them waiting or having to argue. Lines there as well. On the other hand I should mention the the instructor was very good. Overall I wouldn't consider Costa for my next cruises and would't recommend them, unless for a VERY good deal and a great itinerary. Not because it's a bad experience by itself (it isn't), but because any other mainstream cruise line I've travelled with is simply better for me. Read Less

The itinerary was exactly what I was looking for in an 8 day cruise. Check-in was very efficient, drop your bag outside and agent verifies bag tag, number given for check-in group, waited only a few minutes until group was called, maybe 10 agents verifying documents, passed through security and on the ship, cabin keys on your bed in cabin. Very easy and efficient. You have to remember this line caters to Europeans and Americans are in the minority. I went in knowing this and wanted to be immersed in the culture. Ship was very "Italian" in decor, much like the Carnival Miracle or Dream (Costa is owned by Carnival Corp). Public areas were clean. They seemed to have problems with the water and hot showers took a while and there were restrooms outside the dining area that never seemed to work. Cabin was in need of updating and the carpeting needed replacement (or cleaning). Surprisingly I expected a lot of smoking but I didn't really encounter that thank goodness. Food was not to my liking. Free coffee was only offered at breakfast and you had to pay at other times. My husband was able to get a cup of coffee one night at dinner but was not able to get any milk or cream as they said there wasn't any??? Americans were provided a bottle of water at dinner. Menu caters to Europeans. Entertainment was not to my liking but that was okay because we were tired at night. All in all, we got what we wanted.....the itinerary. Read Less

First and last time with Costa. The ship is well-designed but poorly operated and all was costly and of bad quality. The food was very poor, hygiene non-existent, which gave us stomach problems for weeks to follow, only eatable at dinner (with the right choice). The ship is billed as Italian, but the cook missed out on everything Italian. As the crew comes from all over the world, one has an excellent chance of contracting some unknown virus (happened to me). Our "All included" ticket did not include drinks. When we asked Client Service about it we got the answer of "We have many kinds of All included". When we kept on pressing how they can exclude drinks from All included, we got the answer of "Too bad". When we asked to see the responsible we got the answer of "I decide who sees the officer and I decide you will not". One can buy drinks one-by-one for an exorbitant price, or buy a "deal", for example for 20 coffees (for those who can drink 20 cups in 5 days). We settled for stocking up on drinks in a supermarket on our first stop. Entertainment was poor, although the poor singers were working hard each evening. TV was extremely limited for non-Italians. Internet was extremely costly but of extremely poor quality. Shopping was offered many "special deals", which mostly consisted of doubling the price and then giving 10-20% discount. Excursions are reasonable, although the prices are double what you can find on the Internet from local companies (which we dared not do). Read Less

This cruise was chosen by Altius Insurance Cyprus (my husband work in this company) as a reward. It was my first cruise, but definitely I will do it again!!! The ship was so clean, nice odor, you could smell the cleaning odors everywhere. We had cabin 6109. The service was amazing. The man that was cleaning our cabin was so polite. The dining on the second deck was amazing. I was wondering how they could serve so tasty food to thousand people "a la carte". The waiters were amazing...so polite! What impressed me the most was the guy and the team in charge with the entertainment!! I remember his name! Louis...was everywhere...dancing...singing... presenting...amazing humor and energy! But what amazed me the most was the assistant bar manager: Pantelis Zoografos! What a personality! I am a marketer and maybe I evaluate different than other people but his eyes were everywhere, ready to offer his services, to say a joke or to say something nice! Make me wonder if this man was born for this job or maybe the job was invented for him!!! Read Less

Lots of sightseeing, no days at sea and ... Petersburg! It is difficult to explore it differently! It was clean, although the ship is old. Visitors are almost all Italians. The TV was very blurred and the program was poor. The kitchen is almost exclusively Italian. The self service bar was small. Tea only once a day, for tea time. Very good service, both in the restaurant and in the cabin. Cruise on time. Medium level entertainment programs. Loud music in the midfield, audible in the cockpit until 24 at night. No hot water in the bathroom 24 hours a day. Available only when few guests use it. It was painful because the cruise in Northern Europe required a bit more heat. Outside temperatures ranged from 10 to 14 degrees. Friendly reception Elevators are quick and accessible. Overall, the cruise is rated 4. Cruise on this line is worse than on the Newgian Cruise Line, but better than the MSC. Read Less

We mainly chose this cruise because it took us from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean. We were very sceptical of cruising with Costa because of the reviews on this site. However the experience couldn't have been better. Costa Luminosa is a bit smaller than other cruises we have done (MSC) and we enjoyed that. It enabled us to meet more people and make some firm friends who we'll keep in touch with. The only thing lacking was enough pools. On a day at sea you almost had to queue to get a swim! We had a premium balcony cabin which was large and comfortable. We liked having a seperate sofa to sit on when we were resting, and the balcony was a great place to escape to if we wanted a little peace. We always had breakfast and lunch in the buffet, and this is where we met most of our new friends, just by sharing tables. The food was good with lots of choice. My only negative would be that there was far too much salt in all the savoury food, both in the buffet and in the restaurant. The entertainment was a bit hit and miss. There were some grea artists playing the various bars on the ship and we rotated around them most evenings. There were also a handful of amazing shows in the theatre, and a handful of not very amazing shows. But we never lacked entertainment somewhere on this ship. We also enjoyed the guest speaker who gave lectures on the history of the area we were in on days at sea. Service was very good and any reasonable request was delivered promptly and with a smile. We didn't do shore excursions at every stop, but the ones we did do were really good. Great local guides. The only downside was having excursions sharing two languages. It was ok when we understood the other language, eg French or Italian because we got the whole story. Unfortunately other languages left us in the dark when you could tell they had more of the story. Overall a great trip and would certainly travel with Costa again. Read Less

Our ship departed early the morning after boarding allowing us to explore Stockholm before departure. Embarkation and disembarkation were very well organized and went very smoothly. There was no waiting for check-in. We were on board within 10 to 15 minutes of arriving at the port. The ship itself was very well designed. There was never a wait at any of the 3 elevator groups. Moving about the ship was easy, even exiting the theater took no time. The surprise was the food. Dinner consisted of 6 courses; the pastas and risottos were fabulous, the cheeses delicious, and the main courses were primarily fish and Italian specialties such as Osso Bucco, all excellently presented and prepared. Wines offered were adequate. Purchasing a drink package would be strongly recommended. Dinning hours were limited from 7pm to 10pm The coffee and cappuccino on-board, Illy, was as good as I have had anywhere. Read Less
