First cruise experience, and I felt like the review is not doing Costa Victoria the justice it deserved. All review was so negative, but in fact, it worth as far as the price we paid. It suitable for laid back Asian family, and that's it. Don't expect too much for over 25 years old ship. The pool are too small, and overall facilities was not a state of the art. About the service, it's not as nightmare as described as the early years of operations. Not excellent also, though. Ports experience was not winning any first impression prize. They start late and people are all crowded in less than suitable condition. But after that, in Phuket and Penang, everything was much better coordinated. The room is definitely cleaner than public area. Especially on the last day, the queue for ladies toilet and how awful the smell was, was terrible - if not traumatizing. So, overall it worth the money, by means if you still get their promo prize of cabin upgraded. More than that, good luck. You will lost the good value. Read Less

I became pessimistic while read some critics for this cruise, and my family already booked a trip for last December. But since I got into the cruise until the trip finished, my worries turned into satisfaction. First, the food was nice-I love their dessert and cakes!- and we got two times gala dinner with crab and lobster, which was delicious. Restaurants opened as promised, pizza station on midnight was a good idea, our favorite place after night games and dance. A bit critic is the drinking water, it would be much better if they provide more fresh water. Second, the staffs are amazing! They were friendly and nice, you can get information easily, the restaurant staff gave warm ambiance, and the dancers were so energetic. More interesting shows will be a good improvement, although we love the Michael Jackson show. Third, the cabin, pool, jacuzzi, and other facilities were well maintained. Yes, it is not a new cruise, but I saw almost no significant damage in it. Overall, I found it nice and cozy sailing with Costa, just want to give the credit and fair critic despite of bad reviews I saw. Good job! Read Less

The house keeping of the cruise was terrible, I was scolded by a Philipino house keeper for kept calling the hotline for services. I am shocked when I asked him how many times was the call made. He told me he got scolded by a maintenance man and he felt this was not fair to him. I told him this is no reason to upset with us as we did not scold him or the maintenance guy. Basically, when we checked in the room , the lights was broken and toilet door felt apart. After this incident, the housekeeper kept asking me where we come from and tried to invade our privacy. Apart from the above, the drinking and bathroom water was high in salt. It is not suitable for drinking. My skin was bruised due to the bathing water was high in salt. On board, you have no mineral water to drink and if you wish, you have to buy it from them. Even you are on your trip to Langkawi and Phuket, you are not allowed to buy water/food to bring back. Also, the CTC withheld our passport and this is alarming if we were missing in Phuket or Langkawi. We were not informed when we sign up for tthe cruise. For the food in the restaurant, I am amazed on the food. The Chilly crab/lobster was served with hard shelf. My son has problem dissecting the flesh. In view of the above, I strongly advise you not to sign up with the cruise in the future, Read Less

Just returned from a 5D4N on Costa Victoria which departed from Singapore to Phuket & Langkawi. Would like to share with everyone my terrible experience onboard. 1) Food: Terrible, terrible, either very salty/sweet, over spicy/oily or tasteless, noodles were always over-cooked. Hoping to find some nice pasta or pizza since it's a Italian cruise ship but not at all....only have either penne or spaghetti with tomato sauce(taste like straight from a jar/canned) or creamy sauce, pizza served at the pizzeria was the same... terrible too......simple ingredients & tasteless. Worst...there's like 4 station for beverages but 3 were always CLOSED, juices only available on the first & last day of cruise for breakfast, ridiculous, water tastes just siphon from the sea, there's a sign indicating no topping up your water bottle using their water dispenser & they don't provide any bottled water in the cabin. Seems like the dishes that they served were all mass produced from a central kitchen, restaurants(sit-down dining & no pork) & buffet style(self-serve & no pork) serve the same dishes(no pork). Saw 1 of the filippino staff(higher rank then service staff) at the buffet area, he just pull down the blind even though there's guest still getting his/hers food before the closing time for breakfast/lunch/tea-break/dinner at the buffet area hurrying/chasing guest away. Non of the dining option operates round the clock. 2)Service: Service staff have horrible attitude, no training given to talk or serve their guest, staff were always talking loudly among themselves even there's guest around them, it's the same whether at the buffet or restaurant, no smile/greeting at all like we are there to bother them. Went to the restaurant for the so call GALA Dinner evening, hoping to have a nice meal after our first horrible encounter of food at the buffet area, after sitting down menu was not on the table and it take awhile for them to deliver the menu after having to ask a few times, again not happy to take order, when food arrives he just put them down on the table, is like nah your food is here, sort them out yourself( he didn't serve them accordingly to whoever's order) & eat it & don't you bother me attitude, btw food wasn't serve accordingly to the course, our salad came after our main. Dessert take a long time to be served so rejected it as we were already pretty full thinking no point bringing it, so server not happy & tried arguing w me(telling me he have a few tables(3) to look after...blah blah blah. Another issue, order 4 fish but server serve 3 first, just a reminder to him we have 4 & he replied he only have 1 hand to serve. 3)Ports: When docking at Phuket it takes us more than 1 hour to get on board the tender boat, having to walk down 3 levels to get to the tender boat is not an easy task for older people with some walking disabilities. 4)Ship: old ship, No proper signage or indication for guest to find their way around the ship. no "proper" pool for kids or adults to use just some "whirpool", not enough of lift working for guest who's not able to keep climbing up and down the stairs. "Public" toilets on the ship is dirty, smelly, floors are always wet. Floors on buffet area is always dirty, slippery & sometimes wet. Attention to Costa Victoria: You will have to learn how to do crowd control, 1st night fire-drilled was chaotic, no clear picture what to do for quite some cruiser and we have to stay at the outside of deck for almost half an hour shuffling here & there. Tender of boat also chaotic, have to wait like 1 hour for us to get out of the ship to go on shore. Have a proper training(proper way of serving, talking & responding to guest NOT by pointing fingers or shouting to their guest's face) before offering them a job or putting them on the floor to serve guest onboard. Staff with name tags stating able to converse in that particular language does not apply for your crew. Spend more money or get a different supplier on getting the food you are feeding to your guest not those "cheapo" & not so fresh stuff. We, paid guest on your cruise ship is to enjoy our holiday, NOT having to "suffered" and got dampened by the service your crew provide with their rude, don't come bother me attitude and we also there to enjoy at least some decent food & drinks. I love cruising through the years and have started young too.Since I have not been onboard any Costa vessels and having read many negative feedback, thought I will give Costa Victoria a try. Oh my, it sure confirmed that it will be my 1st and last cruise with Costa Victoria and will not attempt to try any other vessels within the same family. Isn't cruising supposedly to be filled with fun and laughter with happy crew members working onboard? You will see non at all and even if you do, it is only a handful and really tiny palm size. Service with no smile. You won't even know that there is a Cruise Director onboard who does not appear often enough nor engaging with passengers. Except to say Ciao Ciao..Crew were simply not engaging enough from all levels. Passengers were treated like some invisible beings. Those performances were able to put one to slumber. Older Ship and not very well maintained. Foul smell detected daily in the cabin's shower area.. No idea why. I tried spraying my personal prefume. Shore excursions were charged on the high side. Tenther boat used were old and disembarkment in Melaka was horrifying. Daily buffet counter not varied enough, almost the same daily. Dining area service staff not extremely friendly or alert.. Never have I gone through such a dull cruising experience. I have to agree totally with previous negative points given.. Read Less

We have been on cruise 4 times and were in a big group. All were excellent except this cruiseliner. 1) ship is old, furniture are old and a chair broke in restaurant. SAFETY issues in Fantastia Restaurant and Sinfonia Restaurant - 2 BIG NAILS (6-10cm long) are found in the these restaurants with my young toddler picking them up on the floor at different timings in different restaurants! Luckily no one was hurt! This can be fatal if the child puts the nails in his mouth or anyone could have trip and fall onto the nails. I stil kept the photos of the nails found. 2) Cabin and public toiets - I encountered a few incidents in our cabin and public toilets in costa victoria with the toilet flushing system, no water to flush! could be the centralised water controlling system which has problem. One of our relatives room's air con auto on and off. Sometimes very cold, sometimes very stuffy. 3) Food were very salty on certain days. Drinking water in resturants can be yellowish at times. Salty drinking water, salty coffee and tea everyday. All the 3 main restaurants, buffet pool deck, Sinfonia and Fantastia Restaurants all served the same food for every meal. Sinfonia and Fantastia resturants close very early for breakfast, 9am! With only 1 restaurant at pool deck in the entire ship that is still open for breakfast at 9am, the dining capacity cannot even accomodate half the passengers. Bear in mind that this pool deck resturant which is still open is the only place on board where passengers can get water and coffee. Needless to say how crowded it was. We had to sit in an outdoor dirty table with rain splaterring in with kids, after queueing for some time at the egg station. The cook said "NO MORE EGSS" at 9.30am and the resturant closes for breakfast at 11.30am! 4) Poor entertainment and activities. No mascots, nothing much for kids to do. Squok club activities are not interesting. 5) Customer service - The human resource director and the customer service director needs a wake up call! 80% of the staff in general are unhelpful, unfriendly, rude at times, no smiles (as if they are under tremendous stress or fatique or u owe them money). Totally not service oriented. Please do not expect staff to smile at you or greet you good morning when they walk past you. If they do, u are in luck. Service is horrendous on board. Can u imagine a man in black suit (of a higher rank in the Italian pizza restaurant) insisted us to sit in a table which is not cleaned. When i tell him that the table is dirty, he just merely pick up some prawn shells and food and put in his hands and walk away. There were still food remainings, ketchup , pizza crust on the table which he didnt bother to take a cloth to clean nor ask his waiters to clean. Is not peak hour and all other tables were occupied or section closed. Waiters seem to be shorthanded at Fantasia and Sinfornia restaurant, there are a few instances when we met nice waiters but most of the time is not. Even simple requests such as water or getting a teaspoon is rejected right on the face with reply, "i'm not your table waiter, u ask your waiter". i told him my waiter is busy and not around, and all i need is just a teaspoon which i have already walked to the area where there are a few waiters standing ard with cupboards and drawers. None bothered to help! What customer serivice is this??? A kind waiter walked over, open the drawer and pass me a teapsoon where i was standing. Such a simple act of opening a drawing to pass me a clean teaspoon is so difficult? Even a cleaner in coffeshops or food centres in Singapore will help to to wipe and clean the table and not forcing you to sit where tables are dirty and refused to be cleaned! Simple questions such as what time does the casino opens? where is the salsa room? where is the room for leisure card / tile games all cannot be answered! If the top management doesnt bother about their customer service standards, how would the rest of all his waiters follow??? CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING IS A DEFINITE MUST FOR ALL STAFF ON BOARD for all aspects. We dont even think they deserve half of the USD60 service charge paid per pax. Phuket and Malacca ports - We have more than 20 hours to spend in phuket and less than 3 hours to spend in malacca. 3 hours is due to not enough tender boats and all passengers have to board the last tenderboat to leave malacca pier is 2 hours beofre the ship sets off. In a way, itinerary is not well planned. This cruise is not handicapped friendly or toddler/baby friendly. Final Mode of settlement / payment is so rigid and upsets many passengers on board. We have seen so many complaining because this ship doesnt not practise the norms as other cruies where final mode of payment can be by a choice of cash or credit card at the final point in time just before we disembark. On day 1, u have a choice of paying USD 150 as cash deposit or do self registration by credit card to prevent deactivation of your room card.. This mode cannot be changed, meaning i do self registration of the room card by credit card now. I cannot pay by cash for the final settlement of bills and vice versa. This pissed so many customers on board, bcos some have so much cash on hand while some want to buy things using credit card by cant do so as their mode of payment is by cash. When customers are unhappy, they wont purchase things from boutqiue shops or use the spa services, buy the expensive photos etc. Is all a chain. Even though this cruise is cheap, it depends what kind of holiday you want to enter into. I'm seeing other pasengers whom i do not know complaining abt different things everyday. Think twice. To end with, 3 of us are sick on the day when we leave the cruise. Stomach flu, fever, Read Less

Great service, shows and food. We thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the cruise and were made feel special by certain staff.. It is an older ship but has all the facilities for a short cruise. Staff member were very friendly and went out of there way to provide a little extra. There is a great choice of eating options with food served all day. The restaurant meals were big and very tasty and breakfast was great. A poolside hamburger or a midnight pizza ensured we were never hungry. In fact quite the opposite we were full all the time. The cabins are old but comfortable and keep very clean by on board staff. We visited Phuket and Penang and embarkment and disembarkment were hassle free. The tour were good and the tour guides were friendly an knowledgeable particularly in Penang Great value for money. We got a special deal on tickets paying about 500000 IDR per person per night for a deluxe balcony cabin. Exceptional value for what we received. Read Less

If you are looking for upper class society experience, this ship is not for you. Costa Victoria is a very laid back, relax ship. Overall, this is a ship without big wow factor like rock climbing or ice skating rink. It is quite an old ship, but some hardware have been upgraded since the editor review was made. Costa card now opens the door as well, so you can just bring one card around the ship. The inside room is tiny but the beds are very comfortable. I fall asleep almost instantly every night. Bathroom is small but for Southeast Asian size it is good. The most fabulous thing about the cruise is the programme newspaper. It tells you literally everything. It have every info you need on board and even reminds you about things you might forget. Following the programs will make you sufficiently busy the whole day. Shows at night is nice but we all feel that the Michael Jackson show could be better... Maybe there's too much emphasis on that one show. The other shows are equally good, if not better than Michael Jackson show. Food are OK, be warned there are A Lot of bread and cakes. If you are a rice person, there is always a pot of rice at the end of buffet line at Bolero. Sit down restaurant have rice options as well. The indian food are nice. Guests on board are all really casual. Staffs are friendly and helpful. Read Less

Pros about Costa Victoria: 1) It has very nice noodle soup every night from 10pm - 2am as well as pool deck on sea days afternoon. 2) welcome drinks on the day of boarding and after returning ship from Penang. 3) Very nice live cooking of kaya toast and sunny up at buffet place breakfast 4) Excellent dance and singing shows for 2 nights 5) Indoor pool comes with in pool chairs which is really comfortable and the lockers are user friendly 6) Nicer pasta compared to Royal Caribbean 7) Late boarding time from 5pm onwards and late leaving of ship after 2pm meaning I can apply a day less annual leave. Also I prefer departure port at Harbour front compared to Marina Bay cruise terminal 8) It has 5 course meals instead of 3 course in Royal Caribbean. Course includes - appetizer, soup, salad, main course and dessert Cons about Costa Victoria: 1) Cabin fridge is locked at all times 2) TV was out of connection most of the time (not much of issue since I don't watch it) 3) Except for breakfast, the rest of room service is chargeable 4) Pool is closed from 10pm - 7am. Even after dinner time when sky is dark, the pool deck remains too dark for people interested in night dip 5) Limited choice of food at buffet place and quality not as good as Royal Caribbean's 6) Coffee and juice dispensers occasionally out of operation in buffet place 7) No coffee offered in main dining room which consists only 1 deck 8) No garnishes in soup in main dining room 9) buffet place chairs are of cheapo plastic chairs unlike the bamboo resort like chairs in Royal Caribbean 10) On the last day of cruise for disembarkment, the staffs would get you out of the rooms before 10am even though ship only reaches destination at 2pm. It is both annoying and embarrassing when you have to leave the room and not knowing where to rest with luggages around you instead of enjoying the cruise to the fullest. Seriously, do the crews really need so many hours to clean from 10am to 5pm before the next passengers board the ship? 11) Library cabinets are locked all the time 12) The crews use our existing cabin towels to make towel animals causing inconvenience to cabin occupants to use remaining towels for showering, etc. 13) The indoor pool is frequently closed for maintenance during its operating hours 14) The meat dishes such as steaks are poorly prepared and hard to bite. In conclusion, it is a nice first try on Costa Victoria but I will not be trying it Read Less

Hi all, I would really like to share with you guys my cruise experience with Costa Cruise (Victoria). I went on 3 Dec 2015 with my family, cruising to destinations such as Penang and Phuket. (Malaysia, Thailand) Service: I felt very welcomed when I first entered the ship. All the staffs, officers and captains were there to welcome us. The staffs then led us to our room (Deck 4,Nabucco). As for room service, the staffs were excellent and skillful in their job; they tidied our room when we were out for breakfast & dinner and spent the fastest time to complete their job to make sure that the room is neat and tidy before we come back. The guest service was very helpful for us, as my grandparent's room' air conditioning was faulty, I called the guest service to send men to repair, and immediately the workers were here to fix it as fast as possible. Staffs were polite towards everyone and helpful to guide us and help us throughout the cruise journey. Dining: We all know that the origin of Costa Cruises is Italy. So maybe you guys will be wondering: Would the cuisine be Italian? My answer is no, there are all varieties of cuisine such as Chinese and Malay. For my case, I am a 13 year old Chinese boy (Singaporean) and I was worrying about the food, will it be close to Chinese food? But when I got on board the ship, it was quite a shock to me that it wasn't all Italy food, but International cuisine. The bolero buffet (Deck 11, Rigoletto) serves rice, fruits, pasta for sure and other international delicacies. Tip 1: Try not to go to the A La Carte restaurant at Deck 5, Boheme (Fantasia & Sinfonia) because the dishes are all the same as the Buffet on Deck 11, so might as well go to Deck 11 with unlimited servings. Tip 2: If you do visit the Bolero Buffet on Deck 11, you would notice that there are 4 sections divided throughout the restaurant (International/Halal/Vegetarian). But there are actually more dishes avaliable at the end of deck 11. So don't miss the chance! Cabin: The cabin is spacious and neat. The room service is twice a day in order to keep the room tidy. The staffs who help you to make up your room will often use napkins/towels to form animals/plants. The air conditioning's temperature can be manually controlled. The overall rating for the cabin is excellent however, the design is a little weird. The window is located above the beds, so in order to view the scenery, you might have to climb up. *Note: The room card is in your room* Embarkation: Singapore I was thinking that it would take very long for us to board the ship because I have read other reviews from other users that we were given a pass/queue number and had to wait for a long period of time, just like my Star Cruise, Gemini experience last year. To my surprise, after siting at the waiting area of 10mins, we could check in and board the ship already. Tip 1: Try to board the ship as early as possible to prevent "human jam" Embarkation: Phuket The ship travelled 2 days to reach this destination. The ship will anchor at the "mini port" at the entrance of Phuket. Therefore, to get on shore, there will be boats to ferry us to Patong Beach. Patong Beach is a place for relaxation for everyone, they have many activities along the beach such as water skiing, rides on speed boat. For my family, we went with the shroe excursion that costa: Highlights of Phuket and Island Safari. Island Safari is similar to Singapore Zoo, there were performances by Monkeys and Elephant. We even had a chance to ride on elephant, it was an enjoyable moment riding the elephant with my Dad. We also went to the famous temple in Phuket, Wat Chalong. Afterwards, we visited the first cashew nut factory in Phuket. We bought many dried fruits/nuts there and we went back to the ship. Our tour guide, Pao, he's an awesome person, he took care of my grandparents throughout the journey, sharing his life experience on the bus, chatting with us went we were bored. *Note: There are more choice of excursions* Embarkation: Penang After leaving Phuket, we headed for Penang. This time, my Dad did not book any shore excursion because my grandparents were not feeling well. So it was a Sunday, my family was walking along the streets, and happened to see many people at the street market nearby the port. It is on every sunday and the shop owners offer a reasonable price for their merchandise. It was quite troublesome before we had to walk one big round around the port to get out of the port. I suggest everyone to download the offline map of Penang in Google Maps. *Note: There are shore excursion available too* Tip 1: There will be taxi drivers outside the port waiting for you. Embarkation: Singapore (End) The had to wait till 3pm to disembark the ship although the ship reached Singapore at 2pm. There will be a colour tag for you to tag on your luggage and the colour will decide the time of disembarking. At 10am, we were requested to leave our room already. This is something I don't really like, there's still 4 hours to reach Singapore, and yet we have to leave our room so early. I had nowhere to rest but under the hot sun at deck 11, beside the pool. Entertainment: There are lots of entertainment on the ship, like Casino, Mini Arcade, Festival theatre for performances, the main hall of the ship for party and Deck 11, Pools. The Casino is only available for certain ages however the arcade is for all. Performances were held in the Festival Theatre such as "Angiolino&Janette La Fracci in Surreal Circus Comedy" and "Michael Jackson Tribute Show". The parties like "The Carnival of Venice Party" and many more are held at Deck 5. There are 4 pools of jacuzzi and 2 rather deep swimming pools. **Note: THE WATER OF THE SWIMMING POOLS IS SALTY** In a nut shell, I feel that Costa Victoria is worth the money and very suitable for family. There will be many activities for you to participate on board and board games/ balls (e.g. Basketball)/rackets (Table Tennis) can be rented by deposit. ***PLEASE DO NOTE THAT ALL MONEY SHOULD BE PAID IN US CURRENCY*** Tip: Register your credit card upon boarding the ship because at the end if the journey, you will be paying a service charge of US$48, because if you don't register your credit card, on the last day, you will have to pay US$48 and requested to queue up. I hope you like my review of Costa Victoria. Do ask me anything regarding the ship and I will try to answer it. Do share your experience with me! Read Less

If you are an Asian looking for a cruise experience, you might want to think twice about cruising with Costa Victoria. Most international cruise lines have a wide variety of food that includes Asian cuisine, but Costa Victoria is an Italian ship line that offers more Italian food than others. Be prepared to choose from a predominately western-european menu that includes no Asian food. You can look for some culinary comfort when you order noodles at night, but even so, the taste is rather bland. Aside from an Italian eatery experience that I couldn’t get used to, the activities are nonetheless the highlight of my trip. The performances and facilities were enjoyable when you consider the amount of money you pay for the trip. It is very reasonable. There were a lot of dancing and performances that showcased the Italian culture- something that is different from the other cruises, and if you want to get a glimpse of Italy, this is the cruise to be on board. Furthermore, there’s no pressure for a nice dress code because their dining halls and concert theaters do not require a jazzy prim get-up. You can come in comfortable berms and shirt, which I really appreciate, especially when on a holidays. Read Less

This cruise was booked to celebrate my husband's big birthday and was a once in a lifetime event for us. We picked it mainly because the advertising stated we would be visiting the orangutangs in Borneo but it just happened to be part of a cruise holiday. We have a bigger complaint against the tour operator which have nothing to do with the cruise but we also have a lot to say about the actual cruise, our expectations and what we got. As far as the cruise is concerned here are my views. We were led to believe that this was a 4 star ship (and is still being advertised as such). In my opinion it was 2 / 3* and very poor. In all the decor was good and we were well looked after by our cabin girl (cleaning, making beds etc). However, we paid extra for a sea view cabin which was just big enough for a double bed with 9" on each side to get in, there was a small dressing table and a corner unit with shelves holding a TV. The porthole was above the bed and you have to stand on the bed to see out. The shower was smaller than those on Brittany Ferries which do overnight crossings, and we were provided with one miniature bar of soap between two of us for the whole voyage. There was a soap dispenser inside the shower stall which contained some harsh soap product. Because we had a long plane journey we were advised not to take too much by way of shampoo, conditioners etc (by firends) as these would be provided. We were sadly disappointed. We stayed in Travel Lodge a couple of nights after this cruise and we paid £33 for a double room and all toileteries were included, which I would have expected on a 4* cruise. Our first main impression was the food. The menu was impressive and everything looked amazing - until it arrived on your plate. They served courses out of order, food was cold or undercooked or just not what was ordered and in general mealtimes were a shambles and the food inedible. We complained to the waiters many times asking them to change dishes to what we had actually ordered or to re-cook something and, although none of this was their fault, they soon became annoyed and rude. May I state that on our table of 8 people 6 people had to send their meals back on the first night and it continued throughout the cruise. This is to say, it was not that we were over fussy but everyone was complaining. I can understand the staff becoming surly but when I asked to speak to the manager or the chef, nothing happened, no-one would speak to us. We also tried the self-service restaurant and found the food to be placed around the area in a very haphazard way, in old-fashioned serving dishes, which were often left open, making the food cold. We also found the same thing in the dishes day after day. We were assured that it was fresh food every time but who wants mashed courgettes for lunch, then dinner and then breakfast. I expected a buffet to be laid out with beautiful salads and fruits and choices of meats etc but it was just meat and 2 veg like a school canteen. We were expecting 24 / 24 hour food availability but when we had to miss lunch one day (again, due to a mess up by the staff) we found that there was no food available until 6pm and that was in the burger bar, then later and into the early hours you could get a pizza. Not quite fine dining. We did not chose to have the pre-paid drinks package as neither of us drink much alcohol so £28 a per each seemed a bit steep for a couple of glasses of wine. We could not buy the pre-paid soft drinks package as it was for under 17 year olds. That left us paying for everything. You got juice and tea/coffee a breakfast but at other meals everything was extra. So you got your meal then had to pay for a cup of coffee or a glass of water. Water was charged at US$ 4.98 per bottle. When we bought a bottle of wine with dinner we only had one glass and they would not allow us to take it into one of the lounges to finish at our leisure, or to our cabin to enjoy later. Not allowed. If you wanted anything for your cabin you had to pay for the drink (of course) but then pay US$ 9 to have it delivered, plus, lets not forget the 15% surcharge on everything, delivery and the drink or food. Next we had a problem with the excursions. We didn't book in advance as we were travelling between our home, our stopover in the UK and the airport when the information arrived. However, we did make all our bookings on the 2nd evening of the cruise and were happy with our choices. However, they lost our bookings and could not offer us any alternative or squeeze us in somewhere as everything was fully booked. They have since said it was our fault for not booking in advance but what difference would that have made if they had lost them too. It was not that we didn't book. THEY LOST OUR BOOKINGS. That mean't we had to find our own way about when the ship docked, and, unfortunately, the staff had no information about where to do, what to do independently and the ship did not even provided currency exchange as we were landing in ports with unknown currencies (such as Borneo, Brunei, Boracay etc). They didn't even know (we found out for ourselves) that the welcoming committes from each country were providing all the services the ship should have, and free of charge (i.e. no charge for changing money back and forth, free hat, bottles of water etc). As for the entertainment. We had to eat out meal at a set time and were not allowed to change that. At the end of each meal we were herded into an auditorium and were 'entertained' by what was no better than amateurish singers. One chap was quite good but I could have heard him at a local kareoke night. The shows lasted 40 minutes when the lights went up you were herded out where you had a choice of sitting in a bar or going to the casino. I expected music and dancing. Again, I was disappointed. When we did get off the ship to go ashore it could take up to 2 hours to wait your turn - this being because we were not booked on organised tours (reasons above) and spent only about 2 or 3 hours on shore, walking around the dock side and port area. To then wait up to 2 hours to get back on board, which was started early therefore cutting your time ashore even shorter. Just one final thing. Having found that there were no toiletries in the cabin we then discovered there was no shop on board to buy such things. Yes, you could buy expensive, designer watches and jewellery, you could pay US$80 for a massage or go to the salon to get your hair done. But you couldnt buy a bottle of shampoo or conditioner. To add insult to injury, no matter how much you complain, they are still happy to take a further 10% in a tipping charge, so no idea what the 15% surcharge was. I just hope that if someone is thinking of booking this cruise that you think twice. We have telephoned them to ask about the ship and according to them it is a 4* luxury cruise. When we asked for details of the ship, food, entertainment etc they said - you can read about it on the Costa website. Please .... don't go. We wasted £3,900 on this trip. But more than that, we didnt get to see any of the places we docked at and there was no trip to an orangutang reserve, just a zoo, but that is another story. Read Less

I travelled with Costa and it was my first cruise experience. It was a short getaway with my JC friends as we wanted to get away from work for awhile before the year starts. As this was my cruise expedition, I didn’t know what to expect but it was a good experience overall! However, as necessary as it sounds, I must remind anyone who’s about to take the cruise that COSTA CRUISE IS FROM AN ITALIAN COMPANY. It’s one of the cruises DNA and main selling point that separates this cruise from other cruise lines. So, logically, their menu will consist of Italian food like pizza and pasta! It’s funny that we met other fellow Singaporeans who complained to no end about the cruise, saying that the food has not enough Chinese variety. Furthermore, as crazy as it sounds, even though I am not a frequent cruise taker, I for one, know that due to the ship’s engine, the beds will vibrate slightly at night, and the food may not taste as delicious due to mass preparation! It was quite embarrassing for me to find out that the people who complained are Singaporeans, and they grumble about not having enough Chinese dishes and that the engine makes too much noise at night. To all reviewers out there, please have a fair judgment on this! Don’t blame Costa for your own unrealistic expectations and shallow reasoning. The beds may vibrate slightly at night, but it did not affect my sleep nor wake me up in the middle of the night. Furthermore, taking this cruise is to allow you to experience the different variety of Italian cuisine! Be adventurous and stop sticking to your Chinese appetite. Even so, when I was craving for some Chinese comfort, Costa did provide hot soup wanton noodles and dumplings at night during their supper meal. Absolutely wonderful and I see no reason to complain. Thumbs up for Costa for sticking true to your Italian roots and always keeping a smile despite dealing with unreasonable people. Ciao! Read Less

Services: 3.5/5 Paid services were much better than those that were free. Went for facial and spa that were on discount. Everyday there will be an event and sale and you can find good discounts on their paid services then Restaurant staff were very friendly and funny. They made an effort to converse and always ensured that we had out food quick and hot. They always made me and my daughters laugh. WIFI was expensive! This is the only reason why my rating isn’t 5/5. It is USD 10 per hour and even so, the connection is weak, particularly in our cabin rooms. Please do something about this Costa! Entertainment Activities:/ Facilities 4/5 Expect a lot of dancing. If you are not into dancing, you can win a quick buck at their gambling casino or play at their acrade. Seems like they hold nightly bingo sessions, but I didn’t play Most of the activities seem more catered for kids, such as basketball, party mask creation. I visited most of the gym facilities such as the gym and pool. Overall Experience: Definitetly unlike the other cruises like Royal Carribean, Costa is a more laid back cruise experience catered to young families and a relaxing holiday.   Read Less

I travelled with Costa Cruise recently and it was awesome! My family and I decided to try after numerous trips with other cruises – been on star cruises way too many times. There was a huge variety of food and the staff was really friendly. The rooms were clean too which was something my parents were particular about. But most of all, what differentiated costa cruise from the rest is how relaxing it was! We had a hard time in the other cruises because there seems to be a lot of people everywhere no matter where we go and regardless of the period of time we were out and about. Costa Cruise also seem to cater more to the older generation which works really well for us because we are all adults in the family and we didn’t like how there were so many young children in the other cruises running up and down. Don’t get me wrong, we love children but it sucks when you are preparing to relax on the cruise and some kid starts bawling his eyes out for God knows what reason. Not much of a relaxation in my opinion. In Costa though, there were few people around and there were times when I only had to share the pool with a few other people :D My sis and I are gym fanatics so it’s really cool how we can go to the gym and we didn’t have to fight with everyone else for the treadmill or the weights. The staff were really friendly and I never had a boring time at the gym since they would always strike up conversation with us. Doesn’t hurt that some are pretty good eye candies ;) We kept going back to the gym and I even lost weight despite eating so much! Killed 2 birds with 1 stone haha. There was a downside though… the engine’s humming and vibration gets pretty loud and hard to ignore some nights but if you feel like you can’t sleep because of that, I suggest hitting the gym or binging on the food. Definitely guarantees a good night’s rest. Tested and proven. Wellll, overall it’s a memorable and pretty cool experience for my family. We shopped quite abit on the main deck and saved lots of money due to the discounts given at the shops. Would be nice if they were to give more discounts though ;) We’ll be back again! Read Less

Singapore - Malacca - Penang This is the 3rd cruise line my family n I took. Have taken star cruises, royal Caribbean before so wanted to try out costa this time round. Bad choice, bad mistake! Worst cruise experience or rather only 1 word to describe it - chaotic ! Boarding time was 4pm, upon reaching at 3.30pm need to queue to get a "Q card" stating the time of check in. We were given no 8 n was told our check in time will be 6pm ? Staffs were stern n fierce. Upon boarding the ship , we were given costa card which act as a room key n charge card on board. Again staffs were not very friendly nor helpful. Make me seem not very welcome , very different from the other 2 cruise lines. We wonder off by ourselves to find our rooms. We had 3 balcony rooms with 2 even room nos and 1 odd no - pls take note odd n even nos rooms are on 2 different sides of the ship! My verdict 1) rooms - balcony Relatively small, cleanliness was still ok. The type of service u get in terms of the cabin really depends on your luck as in your cabin steward. We had 3 diff rooms, 3 diff cabin stewards, service given were diff. 2) staff attitude HORRIBLE - makes me wondered if this was a FOC cruise? If not why were the staff so unfriendly n rude ? Staffs are rare , Smiles were rare, really rare ! 3) Food - super pathetic food especially the level 11 buffet line. No juice provided at all, only coffee n tea n plain water w very weird taste. The ala carte restaurant food was ok but service was not up to standard , the staffs do not mingle w guest, hav the feeling of "pls finish your food n go" kind of attitude. 4) bar drinks Non standardized drinks. Same cocktail order at different bars taste different and looks different. To summarize , the food and the staffs attitude are the 2 major big problems in costa Victoria ! If passengers don't feel welcome and not provided with satisfactory food then I don't see any reason to be on board ! It's absolutely not value for money ! Read Less

Realized that most reviews here about European expeditions. I’ve travelled with Costa with my husband when we visited Singapore for a holiday. We celebrated our first wedding anniversary with Costa when we were on board, after much comparison with other cruise liners. Great trip overall, the ship was really big, and hence spacious, and we had no problem finding dining areas or drinking areas at the numerous bars. Unlike locals bars and restaurants, the staff were very attentive and friendly, always chatting with my husband and myself during meal times. The food was great too, i enjoyed the free flow ala carte buffet of wide selection of Italian cuisine. Prior to our first meal, we were allocated table numbers, hence didnt have any trouble finding a seat. We had a great table throughout our stay, by the side with a mesmerizing view of the sea. Rooms and toilets are clean, the turn down service was prompt and efficient. Though a little small, the toilet was clean and full equipped, just remember to bring your toothpaste! The all-day beverage promotion was my husband's favorite! Being an avid alcohol lover, he was excited to try all the different concoctions, especially when the prices in Singapore are so steep. Do get the drinks package when you're on Costa, it's really affordable and life definitely gets better when you’re abit tipsy ;) I recommend this cruise line especially to those Asians like me who are keen to try for a holiday off in the seas! Just returned from cruising with costa, what a disappointment. Embarkation took about 2 hours,so slow. Got on board, went to cabin which is very small, the toilet smelt of urine as soon as we walked in. Went for something to eat, food not hot,no hot water left for tea, tables dirty, staff miserable and most unable to speak English..ship left 2 hours late from Singapore,no explanation for it either. In fact every port we visited the costa victoria left late. I was looking forward to seeing Bali but we were 4 hours late arriving and it was dark when we got there. The excursions that were offered to us we're mainly heritage tours, no beach tours,no snorkelling or diving tours, tours offered by locals were much better including zoos, turtle farms, paragliding etc. I would not recommend costa cruises. I think charging 11 dollars a day per person for service charges is disgusting and it is not optional, which is probably why most of the staff were miserable gits as they know passengers are being charged daily whatever. The only staff member we would have paid a service charge to would have been our cabin steward. Costa victoria need more staff and better management skills. Also had to pay for laundry charges, other cruises we have been on have laundrettes. Wifi charges horrendous. Disembarkation not to bad but it was a relief to get off. If you want a lovely cruise with great and polite staff go with princess cruises you won't regret it. Read Less

We boarded the first week of a two week cruise, embarkation was okay but not really organized. We had a balcony cabin. Cabin was okay with everything in working order. GOOD POINTS: 1. Cabin was clean and functional 2. Casino staff were very friendly especially pit boss Marcel. 3. Décor in ship was okay and functional. 4. Shows were good especially dancers. 5. Port selection was different and good and this is why we selected ship. Bad Points 1. Food in buffet was not up to standards compared to other ships even compared to other Costa Ships ,and very repetitive. 2. Buffet was not open at night thus if you missed your early sitting at night because of a tour you were out of luck and your only choice was pizza which opened at 8.30 p.m. Pizza was not up to snuff as on other ships. 3. Staff seemed were very green, service at buffet slow, almost impossible to get drinks from waiters and they seemed to be non existent at times especially deck 12. I would order drinks (pop) and I would have finished eating and drinks had not arrived had to cancel order twice. Slow at cleaning off tables in buffet and staff had hard time understanding English or French. 4. Wash cloths in room were almost non existent had to ask almost everyday. 5. Tours seem poorly organized waiting too long for buses to arrive at some ports. Tours did not leave on time. 6. Casino machines are very outdated plus they removed most machines in favor of tables and many children were allowed to play machines which is illegal. 7. Casino dealers were very green and hard time communicating in English but pit bosses were friendly and were still training dealers. 8. No towels were found on decks for exchange. 9. Service in general was lacking and not up to par with other ships. 10. Did not have good selection of souvenirs stores only high priced items. 11. Main problem was overall staff seemed new and they had a very hard time communicating in English. 12. Entertainment in music venues were very blah.   Read Less

Last December(2013) we took an 11 night cruise out of Singapore with Costa Cruises to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. We thought that because it was advertised in the UK as a Far East Cruise, that it would be aimed at the European traveller. The cruise consisted of 3 mini cruises out of Singapore, up and down the Malaysian and Thai coast. We boarded the ship (Costa Victoria) at Singapore cruise terminal, it was a little drawn out out but we eventually got aboard, along with the rest of the passengers, 80% of which I would say were Chinese. We found our cabin 80423, it was small, as was the shower, but reasonable. When we went down for dinner we were shown to our table, 45, which we had booked in the "Fantasia" a-la-carte restaurant for our entire cruise, and met a nice couple from Sweden who were sharing our table. The food was ok, it was what I would describe as "good pub grub". That evening we noticed that a lot of the passengers (Chinese) seened to be just wandering around the ship aimlessly, and those that had sat in the bar were just there taking up all the seats to listen to the "entertainment" ( again pub level ), without even buying so much as a Coke! Their dress code left a lot to be desired, in fact some looked like refugees from a war zone. This was because most of the passengers disembarked in Singapore each time we docked to be replaced by more of the same, all they appeared to be doing was going from Singapore to Malaysia and back to possibly buy cheap goods, as Brits used to do on cross channel ferries to go to France for cheap alcohol. It was a Chinese ferry, nothing more. I also found these Chinese to be very rude people. It was almost impossible to get out of the lift if half a dozen Chinese wanted to be in, they would not wait! On our third evening we went down for dinner to be told at the door....."sorry we are full, but you can go and eat in the buffet on deck 11 if you want". I would not have eaten in that buffet if it was the only eatery on the ship! This happened on 3 evenings, each time I had to persuade the Maitre d' to find me a table, unfortunately it meant sharing a table for 8 with a badly dressed family of 6 Chinese. On Dec 17th, our Anniversary, we had booked the "Il Magnifico" a-la-carte resaurant, which was $33 each extra. While we were looking at the menu a couple came in and asked for a table, and he was wearing tee shirt and shorts. I got the impression the Maitre d' was going to let him come in dressed like that so I asked him if he would ask the gentleman to go and change. After about 5 minutes discussion at the door the gentleman did eventually go and change. I womder if I had not said anything if he would have been allowed in? It did appear to be very casual and not what was implied in the advertising. The excursions offered were expensive, and not really value for money, except for Koh Samui where we rode an elephant, and Malacca which was very nice. But Phuket, oh dear, we dropped anchor offshore and transferred by ship's tender to a rickety floating jetty in the bay of Kalim Beach. What a filthy, dirty place that was. If I had booked a holiday to Phuket, and ended up in Kalim Beach I would have demanded a refund. And to add insult to injury when we got our credit card statement as we left the ship we found we had been charged $121 each for "hotel services". This had never been mentioned to us by either Costa or the agent we booked with, Adore Cruises.co.uk. We left the ship VERY disappointed with our cruise, but wiser. NEVER again with Costa Read Less

We cruised out of Singapore to a few stops around Indonesia over Christmas. Whilst no one hated this cruise - we certainly overly didn't enjoy it either - especially having sailed with much, much better cruise lines. The Costa website is the hardest website to use. Not one single thing was easy, especially as we are Aussies who booked through an American company. We had nothing but problems from start to finish. Apparently a booking number isn't good enough!! Nothing is compatible. Totally useless really. THE CRUISE on Costa Victoria - Embarkation was good, though Vacations to Go (Florida, America) failed to provide adequate information for the departure point (Marina Bay Port) - pretty much failed to supply most information actually. The food on this cruise was only just ok. Gordon Ramsey is desperately needed onboard to sort out the useless Chefs and boringly bland, repetitive food. The service by wait-staff is practically non-existent - truly the worst service we have ever experienced anywhere in the world. It doesn't help that this ship is completely understaffed (Costa should be ashamed). They seemed completely overwhelmed by simple requests - like a glass of water, couldn't/ wouldn't clear or clean a table down.......and a lot of them didn't speak English....even though Costa assured us that "all staff are trained in the English language"!! This was a complete lie. The same dirty sheet was left on our bed for days and not changed by the house-keeping staff. It was easy to tell this, as it was stained in one small area where a bit of cookie had been smudged on the bed. Also, even though we are a married couple (25 years +) they gave us single beds, we had to push them together ourselves. When we moved the beds, the carpet was dusty and had quite a lot of dust bunnies around the edges of the room itself. WARNING.....THESE ARE THE SMALLEST, MOST CRAMPED CABINS YOU COULD FIND. There was barely enough room to manoeuvre around the bed, unless you stooped over the bed to avoid hitting your head on the bunks above. Terrible if you have a bad back. Only one stool to sit on for two people - not even a real chair. The tiny table was cluttered with brochures, cups etc. The minibar was locked the whole time. The pool area needs a complete refurbishment - it was disgraceful - as were the bar staff. Failed many times to get even simple drinks correct. Iced-tea instead of Asti Spumante - a gin & tonic instead of scotch & coke.....rediculous really. Some entertainment was very good but it was pretty hit & miss most nights. The one bright point of this dismal cruise was the "Animation Team" - they were good fun and by far the most professional people onboard except for MJ who worked in Spa Services, she was a lovely lady. HOWEVER, OUR FIRST CRUISE WITH COSTA WILL BE OUR LAST CRUISE WITH COSTA. Upgrades are needed in every single area. Read Less

We took this 21 day cruise on Costa Victoria which departed from Singapore on 19 December 2013. I apologise in advance for the length of this review...it reads like war and peace. However I thought it was important to "highlight" just how bad this ship is and how bad Costa as a company are, to spare anyone else the holiday from hell, without first being made aware of all the problems. So settle down, pour yourself a nice long drink, take a couple of valium and celebrate that you were not on this cruise!!! Although we hadn't been advised prior to embarkation, this cruise was made up of a number of "back to back" cruises i.e. a 7 day cruise, a 5 day cruise and a 9 day cruise. We visited many ports around Asia and the itinerary was nothing short of fantastic. However, unfortunately I cannot say the same about the ship. We have cruised in excess of 20 times, with a number of cruise lines. This was our first cruise on Costa and without doubt it will be our last. It was the most distressing and upsetting experience. I am therefore reviewing Costa Victoria itself and not the ports visited. Embarkation was a nightmare. The departure hall was full to bursting, with nowhere near enough seats. My mother required wheelchair assistance onto the ship...but finding a wheelchair and assistance was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Eventually we boarded the ship and the Costa employee pushing the wheelchair deposited us in the bar, which was close to where we had embarked. He asked us to wait there for a couple of minutes. We never saw him again!!! It was almost 1.5 hours before Costa staff were able to find anyone else to assist my mother to our cabin. We had booked a premium balcony cabin. Despite being advised by our travel agent that this would provide a larger cabin for my mobility challenged, elderly mother, this was in fact incorrect. All balcony cabins on Costa Victoria are the same size. A premium cabin is (allegedly) located in a privileged position on all of the ship's decks and provides "special" benefits such as preferred dining time for dinner and breakfast and cabin service 24 hours a day. That is it!!!! The cabin we had booked was 10329 on deck 10. This cabin was cramped and was an obstacle course for even the fittest and most mobile of people. Although Costa were aware that my mother had a mobility problem they were not at all interested in my concerns for her safety. We did not book a disabled cabin as Costa only permits people in wheelchairs to book disabled cabins. All the disabled cabins are inside cabins. In my opinion the balcony cabins are not suitable for the elderly or infirm. The element on the kettle provided in the cabin was very rusty and the smell from the kettle made me heave. The cabin's were dusty and looked tired and dated. This ship is 15 years old and it shows in the cabins. I believe the carpets have been replaced in the cabins....it didn't look like anything else had ever been replaced. Announcements made on the PA system could be heard loudly and clearly in the cabins, no matter what time of day or night they were made. We didn't particularly enjoy being woken at 7:00 a.m. or whilst having a nap at 17:00 p.m. to an announcement that tours were still available for the remaining ports of call. The mirror in the bathroom was more rust than mirror. The floor in the bathroom was wooden...and wood rots in damp and wet places. The heel of my shoe went through the bathroom floor at one point... All cabins on deck 10 suffer from noise from the deck above. The pool and bar are above deck 10. From early morning until early evening we were deafened (no exaggeration) by the noise of sun beds and chairs being scraped across the floor and people walking to and fro. Then late at night there was the noise of chairs being scraped across the floor, music and dancing. Don't forget we were in a premium cabin...in a privileged position! We were told by the crew that this is a common problem for all the cabins on deck 10. We know of many, many people that asked to move cabins. During the first night of the cruise, after leaving Singapore, the seas were a little rough. At some point during the night I was woken to an almighty crash and found that the heavy safe had fallen out of the wardrobe onto the cabin floor. So, not only was the cabin an obstacle course, the safe wasn't safe!!!! Also the air conditioning grills rattled incessantly....it was like having a 40 piece orchestra playing next to your ear, whilst trying to sleep. I rang and reported the problem and was told I would have to put up with the noise. No toiletries were provided in the bathroom. The ship constantly stunk (and I mean stunk) of sewage. We were told this had been caused by passengers continually flushing inappropriate items down the toilet instead of using the sanitary bags provided. What sanitary bags? None were ever provided in our cabin. We never had any hot water in the sink in our cabin, although it is important to wash hands in hot water to kill any germs or bacteria that may be present. Throughout the cruise it was very difficult to get to speak to someone at the front desk as there was always long queues of complaining, disgruntled, unhappy people. Our cabin balcony and table were filthy...they were filthy when we boarded the ship and they were not cleaned during our time on the ship. The beds in the cabins are low, so if you have hard shell luggage which we had, it is not possible to store them under the bed. This meant they had to be stored on their ends at the bottom of the bed...which made it impossible to move from one side of the cabin to the other. There were no chocolates on the pillow on this cruise and no announcements made by the captain or officers either. In fact rumour had it that the Captain didn't turn up for the Captain's cocktail party, which he had been due to host. We were never given any information about the ship's position, as is usual on other cruises. The only news available on the ship was via Euro News, which even on the English channel was in German. The daily newspaper was never available. The wardrobes contained a rusty rail with 12 fixed hangers which were virtually glued to the rust on the rail. You needed to have Herculean strength to move them. The hangers were the large variety so it was impossible to put any additional hangers into the wardrobe. So...12 hangers for 2 people on a 21 day cruise. Also there isn't a laundry on the ship for the use of passengers....you have to give your laundry to your cabin steward. As an example it was £6 to wash and iron a pair of ladies trousers and £1 for each item of underwear. During our time on this ship they didn't have any guest speakers or port information, other than what was included in the Today daily programme. The safety drill was a complete joke. We were told that it was mandatory that all passengers attend the safety drill. We were given a card at embarkation that had to be taken to the safety drill and handed in, so they could ensure everyone had attended. If, for any reason, passengers did not attend they would be required to attend a safety drill the following day. We were unable to attend due to my mother's walking aid going "walkabout" and she was unable to walk without it. The following day, when we left the cabin to go for breakfast at 10:00 a.m. I noticed there was a piece of paper in our pigeon hole advising that we had to attend a safety drill at 09:30 a.m. that morning.....As a result we never attended the safety drill and heard nothing more about it. Very worrying considering the sad outcome of Costa Concordia. The timing of dinner in the main restaurant changed regularly...sometimes it was almost daily. Water with dinner was never offered....you were expected to buy bottled water. No coffee after dinner was offered...you were expected to buy and pay for coffee in the evening. You could buy drinks and water packages, which I believe were good value. However all the passengers on the same booking were charged for the drinks package, whether they wanted it or not and this was not practical for us. The drinks on this ship were the most expensive we have ever encountered. Some evenings it took 1 hour plus to get wine (whether you were on the drinks package or not). Most evenings it took almost 3 hours to be served 2 courses. The service in the restaurant was appalling. The staff on the whole were lovely but there is a very low crew to passenger ratio and therefore due to under staffing, the crew that are on there are massively overworked. Tables in the main dining room and buffet area were constantly dirty and not being cleared from the previous diners. However the officers that ate in the main restaurant where constantly served promptly and quickly....always arriving for dinner after us and leaving before us. Almost every evening we were so late finishing dinner that we were too late for the late show. The buffet was the worst buffet I have ever seen on a ship. The plates were small.....the size of a medium tea plate. They did not provide any trays in the buffet either. We concluded this was to stop people having a number of plates of food. Most evenings the buffet was only open for 1 hour and some lunchtimes too. Therefore if you were unable to eat the dinner in the main restaurant (and this happened to us on a number of occasions as the food was so bad) the only dining option was the pizza restaurant on deck 12. In fairness the pizzas were really, really good...but there are only so many times I can eat a pizza. Breakfast in the buffet finished at 10:00 a.m. and on sea days we missed this. A late "continental" breakfast was provided in the pizza restaurant. It was the same items every day, and, for us, virtually inedible. One day we asked if it would be possible to have some toast. We were told yes, it would be possible. When it came I picked it up and the underside of the bread had not been "toasted". The other side of the toast had grill marks on it. I asked the Head Waiter if the bread had been fried on one side, rather than being toasted and he replied yes.....we haven't got a toaster!!! The food in the buffet on the whole was okay, if you don't mind a limited variety and like small portions of mainly Indian and Chinese food. If you want to lose weight this is the cruise for you. Water and coffee were only available in the buffet in the evening if you were prepared to pay for them. On more than one occasion we were subjected to the Maitre D' and Head Waiters screaming and shouting at waiting staff. The majority of the officers onboard this ship were rude and aggressive and not at all pleasant or polite to passengers or crew. Their manner was one of aggression and finger pointing towards passengers and crew. As I mentioned earlier, this was a "back to back" cruise. On the first changeover day there were about 50 passengers that were continuing with the cruise. However they must have forgotten about us....there was no food or drink available at lunchtime (not even coffee or water) and when we questioned this with the F&B Director we were told, very rudely, that the ship had to be cleaned and made ready for 2000 passengers that were boarding that day and they didn't have time to provide lunch due to crew shortages. There was absolutely no consideration for passengers remaining on board. All of the safety doors were closed on turnaround days, although no notification was given of this. This meant that we had to walk miles and miles and miles to find the lift and buffet as none of the doors we usually used were open. You are not allowed to bring any food or drink onto the ship and this rule is strictly enforced. Whatever is found is confiscated. This also applies to irons, kettles, alcohol, swiss army knives etc. etc.. This ship is all about money, money, money i.e. making as many cost savings as possible and getting the passengers to spend as much as possible. The service charge of $11 day is compulsory and cannot be removed...no matter how bad the service. I know....I tried. They did not have any complaints forms....I assume they had run out....We were told by the crew that the service charge is not passed onto them; Costa use it to offset the cost of paying the crew. Therefore 1900 passengers paying $11 per day is $20,900 or £12,500 per day....a nice little guaranteed earner. It was not possible to change the pool towels provided during the day if e.g. they became wet or dirty, as the cupboard by the pool which contained clean pool towels was always locked. I had continual problems with the internet. The internet is very expensive on this ship and on several occasions I logged off from the internet and received the message "you have successfully disconnected from the internet and the counter has stopped" only to find out that the connection had continued and used up all my credit. Twice I complained about this to the front desk. I was told it was my fault as I hadn't logged off correctly. Despite promising me that they would escalate my complaint to the IT department, they never did and they refused to make any refund. A great scam to get money for nothing. When we received our final bill, the total was $xxx and 63 cents. Costa had then taken the liberty of rounding this up to the next dollar. Whilst we are talking about a very small amount of money, if you multiply $0.37 by the number of cabins on the ship it is yet another opportunity to get money for nothing. Finally the day of disembarkation arrived in Hong Kong. My mother was taken off the ship in a wheelchair by a member of the crew. He opened the door to enter the terminal building to see a flight of stairs and no lift!!!! He asked an officer where the lift was and he was told there wasn't one. I asked how my mother was expected to get into the terminal building without there being a lift and the officer shrugged his shoulders. She managed to walk down the stairs with some difficulty and the crew member carried the wheelchair down. The next obstacle was escalators to move up to the arrivals hall. It would have been very dangerous for her to use the escalator, so we had to wait while they contacted the manager of the Harbour City shopping mall, where the terminal is situated. The manager came and allowed us to use the goods lift!!! If she had been unable to walk at all I dread to think what would have happened. We were not given any prior warning that there was no disabled access at Hong Kong. There is a saying that you get what you pay for. However it should be noted that we paid £3200 per person for this cruise (excluding flights) which works out at more than £150 per day, plus a further $11 day (dis)service charge. It was the worst experience we have ever had on any holiday, let alone any cruise and my advice to anyone would be to avoid Costa at all cost!!!!   Read Less

We sailed on 18th December visiting Malaysia and Indonesia. After reading some reviews we were apprehensive about this our first cruise with Costa. My advice; ignore the reviews judge for yourself when you try it. The ship was lovely, the staff were fantastic, the entertainment especially Janos Olha Duo was excellent. Our cabin was kept sparkling clean by our ever helpful steward. The restaurant waiters couldn't have tried harder to provide for our different needs. The itinerary was varied and, here is my only criticism, it would have been nicer if a little more time could have been spent on shore, particularly in Bali. The thing we didn't like was the way in which some guests treated the staff. I realise that on occasions there were problems with language but how many cruisers could cope with so many languages and dialects? We witnessed some appallingly rude treatment of staff by a variety of nationalities. To these people I say try being polite and quieter with your requests, shouting is non productive. Also try reading the information sheets in your cabin, you could prevent many of the problems if you showed a little more care and consideration for the environment. Read Less
