So to tell the story, my father and I hired a travel agent last minute to make a trip to Spain for New Years. We decided to go for a cruise that goes to some of the Italian coastal cities, so based on our budget, we went with Coastal Diadema. Checking in and getting into our cabin was fairly easy and the New Years celebration was a lot of fun since you could go to different areas in the cruise with different music genres. I very much enjoyed that. Once the cruise departed from the coast, that's when trouble started coming. We had booked a tour in Rome for the Sistine Chapel in Spanish two weeks prior to the trip. They notified us to go to the tour offices and we assumed it was to confirm the tour. It was to tell us that they cancelled it. First of all, the language barrier was an issue with the staff because most of them were Italian and their understanding of other languages was a huge stress for us; they could not understand us and it was the same vice versa. They were not helpful when it came to trying to book us another tour. We had to constantly be going to their offices to see if we could fix the situation but we kept getting responded with "I don't know"s; as in "I dont know what we have" and "I dont know what to do". We had to schedule with their manager in order to have anything done who thankfully fixed the situation. This was in a span of three days. Oh! They also cancelled our tour in Savona, Italy as well. Apparently they have a lot of problems reaching the minimum amount of people for the tours. So my advice, book outside the ship. This agency is too unreliable. Speaking of bad service, most of the staff were cold and robotic when it came to customer service. Just overall rude. We honestly thought it was a culture thing because even a lot of the tourists were rude as well. The cruise. was. dirty. As in there was an issue with the ventilation and cleanliness of the cabins, to the point that HALF OF THE CRUISE GOT SICK. Including me and my father. We both had fever and horrible coughs for days. Could barely sleep. We both had to go to the emergency clinic where we found out how many people were actually sick. It was only after we keep leaving the cruise when we began feeling better. Entertainment was pretty enjoyable. I liked the fact that you had bands and singers in different parts of the cruise singing various languages and genres, so you had a lot of variety. There were activities that I did not find family friendly, specially for a "family" cruise, but still enjoyable. The breakfast food was horrible. Anything bread was harder than a rock and they only serve you fruits. If you had eggs they were always underdone and tasteless. The buffet for lunch and dinner were pretty good tho. Including the food from the restaurants. Pizza is delicious, Samsara restaurant was good, hamburgers are great. Honestly, AVOID the dining at all cost. If you have a scheduled time to go to a restaurant for dining, just dont go. The food has literally no flavor. The buffet is soooo much better. Honestly, no. I would not go again. Not at all. I called Costa Cruise in Miami to find out information before getting on the ship regarding payments onboard and other pre boarding questions. Each question was answered incorrectly and when we boarded we were in for many surprises. On the first night of the cruise, were were FORCED to purchase a drink package for each of our three children on the ship who were staying in their own cabin. Two were full alcohol and the third was the soda/water package. On the second morning of the cruise one of our kids had a few bites on his neck. The next day another child had several bites on his stomach. That child had seen and killed a bug on his brother's bed. We immediately reported the incident to the Hospitality desk. They took all the kids clothes and luggage and washed them and sent the kids to the ships hospital where they proceeded to give a cream treatment to the child that had more bites. Turned out that child was allergic to the detergent used on the ship and had to return a second time to the hospital where he received a shot of steroids and more medication. From there the trip went downhill and as much as the staff thought they were doing for us to make this right, anything that was done was more to benefit Costa Cruise Lines. Since child number 2 was not able to use his drink package while on the medication the other one that is old enough did not drink either(its not fun to drink alone). The ship would not refund all the drink packages they forced us to purchase, only the one for the child on the medication. The first dining room could not accommodate the five of us at the same table so we had to find the maitre d' for the second night to change our dining option since its the one week per year we get to spend together. They gave us the second seating in the dining room which was 9:00pm. The service was so slow we did not finish dinner until almost midnight. We then decided to try the anytime dining. Because we changed our dining option after the first night, we were charged per person for the change. The restaurant manager couldn't have been nicer though and the rest of the cruise did not charge for the change. The food on the ship was very mediocre and to eat gluten free anything as my diet requires, the only option I was given was to eat in the dining room. None of the buffets during the day or even room service has gluten free from what I was told. Basically I had one meal per day! Having adult children, they were looking for nighttime entertainment in the disco or other areas of the ship. The disco had 13-17 year olds enjoying their time leaving our children feeling uncomfortable to be in the same disco. They were very underwhelmed having very little 21-25 adult activity. The communication was poor across the board. We had to search for ourselves to get any information about the ships activities or entertainment. We felt as though we were a very unwelcomed group of travelers as well as other travelers that fit our profile, we all felt the same way. The overall attitude of the staff was disinterested in doing anything to work when all we were looking for was help. The rolling of their eyes when we approached them and poor bodily language was a reinforcement of their behaviors. This is not a ship we would recommend to any of our peers! Read Less

Wanted a exclusive dining experience for Christmas. Got Hell Costa Diadema Christmas in the 'Med' 18th Dec to 31st Dec 17 B2B. The term 'never again' comes to mind unfortunately we have already booked this ship again for five weeks' time. Making allowances that it was the lead up to Christmas we expected a full ship & lots of children, fair enough we have been with Costa lots over this period, so knew what to expect, or so, we thought. What we got was the EXCLUSIVE dining experience in the club restaurant ruined by children running amok bumping into waitresses carrying hot plates while their parents chatted on mobile phones, a menu of just two choices which was repeated the second week. Track suits where on show as was shorts on three days. Now I love the club restaurant but this was something akin to a motorway service area on a bank holiday, certainly so far from exclusive dining as you could get. So bad that on four nights we wear unable to choose anything from the menu that was to our liking, having tried the other choice on the first week. We resorted to paying for the Samsara twice (same menu) and the Teppanyki once (wonderful) & even the buffet, (better choices than the Club EXCLUSIVE restaurant.) Choosing a suite now for the privilege of fine dining now appears to be a total waste of money. The second most annoying thing was the sheer volume of the music in every bar, even our favourite Piano bar which you even had to shout orders to the waiters over the din (music) we resorted to the Pizza area seating just to allow us to talk to guests we had met on board, even the shows were exactly the same as the first week, so in fact our second week was a total repeat of the first week from menus to shows. The casino has doubled its stake on every machine & it seems pays out very little, according to several people we spoke to. Once again very po treatment of Perla Diamante members & Suite guests boarding at Barcelona, On the plus side, well, fabulous staff very helpful, very clean & tidy cabins and about the ship. Good treatment of the children on Christmas day, present for each from Santa. Although ship was full it did not feel crowded, fairly easy to walk round even at our very slow pace, apart from end of the shows. Nice to have two rows saved in theater, however no check was ever made making this perk again unworkable & useless. Would these B2B cruises make us think about sailing with Costa again? Yes, I guess it would if it was the Diadema over the winter months only. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the great port calls; Italy, athens, olympia, Kotor, and Split. The destinations did not disappoint. They were fantastic and we avoided much of the crowds by cruising in the winter. Unfortunately, we did not have a chance to explore Venice before our cruise departed as Easyjet canceled the flight. Needless to say, we had to scramble to find alternative transportation to Venice and it cost us an extra day of travel. The embarkation and disembarkation was extremely smooth at Venice. We had no issues getting on the ship four hours before the departure. Customs was smooth and friendly and this was the easiest embarkation we have experienced. The Luminosa allows you to embark or disembark at any of the port calls but I'm unsure how smooth the process was at the other locations. Like other reviewers, we found the Luminosa to be average. Compared to other cruises, the food was disappointing. Mainly pasta dishes and you pay extra for the dishes that are included on other cruises such as steak and lobster. Costa cruise lines charges extra for things like coffee, bottled water, ice cream, and even pizza. We found the layout of the cruise ship to be very similar to other cruise lines of this size. Spa on the 9th floor near the front of the ship, cafeteria style dining on the ninth floor, restaurant on the 2nd floor, casino, bars, etc. Our classic cabin with a balcony was nice; easily accommodating two adults and two children. The cabin was well insulated but we did hear some children running in the cabin above us. Thankfully, no issue with neighbors that smoke. The kids club seemed fine. My nine year old only went a few times but there didn't seem to be any language barriers. The teen club, however, was given over for infant space. As a result, the teens didn't really have a place to hang out and they would meet on various parts of the ship. It was a poor compromise and our teenage daughter, whom usually likes the teen club, chose not to participate on this cruise. It is apparent the crew is overworked. We were told they work 13 hour days for nine months without a day off. Our steward was responsible for around 20 cabins and it showed. Although hard working and friendly, you could tell the staff was stressed. Also, be prepared for lots of Italians and a lack of personal space and no regard for queues. Of course, this happens with other nationalities as well. Also, the announcements must have been in at least three languages which got tedious after a while. We did not attend any of the entertainment options but other passengers had good reviews for the nightly entertainment. All in all, we had a good cruise thanks to the port calls. Costa Luminosa has the potential to be a great cruise ship. Unfortunately, the quality of the food and overworked staff prevent the experience from rising to the next level. I would recommend the ship to those who are excited about visiting European ports and the timing works or the Luminosa price is significantly less than the competitors. Otherwise, it would be wise to consider other cruise ships. Read Less

It's a pity I only read the reviews about Costa after I have booked its Mediterrean cruise. Turned out the negative reviews of most critics are true! Indifferent restaurant service, overcrowded and messy restaurant with mundane food, chaotic restaurant seating arrangement, below average night shows, confusing ship facilities layout, poor communication regarding embarkment & disembarkment etc., all made our experience with the cruise under-whelming. The buffet was always too jammed with insuffucient seats & you had to be quick to grab a table & sat almost shoulder to shoulder with another fellow passenger. On a postive note, the premium insde cabinet was large enough for 2 persons with sufficent storage space. It was also clean & tidy. If you go to the breakfast on the third floor where eggs and bacons are served, you are allocated to sit with others without any sense of logic. We are a couple & there are plenty of small tables with 2 seats. Why are we allocated to a big table where similar couples are forced to sit together? Read Less

The crew on the hospitality area aren’t friendly. Their smiles are very expensive. I am reluctant to fall in line as if I am about to be punished for a mistake i have done. The Filipino waiters are so sympathetic on Ristorante Florante. They are the ones who are ready to help. Our cabin in-charge is also sympathetic and very smiling. It perked our day whenever we met him everyday on the alley. The shuttle buses are on time. I didn’t appreciate the Crew Members entertainment night. Of course their efforts are appreciated but using Teatro Emerald for Amateurs didn’t commensurate my expectations. The embarkation and disembarkation is alright. I didn’t appreciate so much the food at the restaurant. I prefer the food on windjammer. Hygiene is not strictly implemented. We can still see people getting water using used bottles from the juice and water dispensers despite the signages. The antibacterial dispensers aren’t displayed where people can see them. Read Less

We chose this cruise mainly because of the price being £250 for 7 nights. We have been to all the destinations before but are happy being on any ship in the sun and not having to tear around sightseeing made for a relaxing time. This is our third Costa cruise this year. One has to ask how you can fault anything at this price but I'll try to be critical bearing in mind some will pay a lot more. Embarkation was smooth in all ports. A little half hour queue in Barcelona for intitial embarkation. Food was really superb in buffet and restaurant. Only criticism here was that service in the dining room was sometimes slow. The buffet coped well with the large numbers and queues were rarely more than a few people. Problems arose early evenings when a large part is closed off to become part of the main restaurant. Seats were in short supply. This needs attention. Staff were friendly and helpful without exception. We were surprised, being the flagship and newest of the Costa fleet that we much prefered the decor of the much older Luminosa and Magica. It just doesn't have the wow factor that these ships have. It is largely brown, beige and gold with some orange thrown in. It all felt a little dated and dull to us. Some outside chairs are orange plastic like the seventies. I wouldn't want to do a sunshine cruise on this ship. It lacks a 'focal point' pool on deck. The main pool has a sliding roof and the second pool is on the back deck and small. That is all there is. There are however many hot tubs and jacuzzis and we liked the heated pods on promenade deck where you can sit inside on cooler days and look out to sea. Perhaps Costa only do colder areas/seasons with Diadema(?) , in which case it is fine for purpose. The shows were superb. Top class and as good as we have seen on any cruise ship. Many excellent musicians and bands around the ship. The atrium was a great place to sit in the evening watching the life on the dance floor Cabin (inside) was comfortable if a little bland. Some of the seating around the ship is very uncomfortable, especially in the Country and rock venue and Atrium. Daft designs. This is a Costa cruise so expect it to be busy with very few Brits and lots of lively Italians and Spanish. It is very different from a P & O experience. All in all very enjoyable and perfect for what we wanted. Read Less

Wanted to try a different cruise line so chose Costa, the ship was lovely and I can't fault the cabin or the public areas very regal and good quality finishes however our experience was somewhat coloured by the type of clientele the ship attracts, I can only compare to one of the hop on hop off buses which are plentiful in the ports we visited as the ship takes on and disembarks passengers at every port we called at so it seems there was always a complement of people walking around the ship with some form of luggage. The lido deck which offers a buffet for all mealtimes is fine if you can get close enough to get something and be warned if they are serving seafood be prepared for the frenzy that takes place by the Italian passengers who seem to want to feed the world with the amount they pile up on numerous plates. We resorted to the restaurant for our meals but apart from the evening meal when we had a reserved table the rest was hit and miss with over worked waiting staff trying their best to take and deliver orders for food and drink extending your time at table to sometimes a couple of hours. The cruise line offers most things at a price, we bought a drinks package that covered alcohol and coffees however did not include ice cream which my husband loves usually finishing his evening meal with some but this was not possible unless we paid extra. Pizza parlour was also an extra charge and not included on the menu. Excursions not cheap and it seemed a lot to pay for places like ancient monuments and churches so we opted for town visits, once again we had to pay for shuttle buses into town which were expensive in comparison to other cruise lines which normally offer these as standard and only in some cases charge a minimum fee. The only free shuttle buses was at Civitteccia put on by the port authority. The shows were mostly in Italian and geared toward the Italians even the compere introduced the acts in various languages before getting to an English version which seemed short in comparison to the others making us feel as though we were missing out. The ship attracted lots of families with young children who could often be found playing in the lifts unsupervised and causing havoc, we also noticed mid cruise we had what seemed like school parties with hoards of teenagers who were loud and boisterous and possibly just old enough to drink and smoke. On the plus side we had a great room steward Melvin who looked after the cabin and our waiter in the restaurant of an evening Ramesh who couldn't do enough for us and really made some of the cruise bearable, along with some lovely people sat at our table who we will stay in touch with. Our arrival at the port of Barcelona was much too early for the ship and although our luggage was checked in at 11am we had a 3 hour wait before being allowed to board and had to spend this in a large arrivals hall which fortunately had a café, coming home we disembarked at 9.30 and had to wait for our pick up for just over an hour with no seating and being moved to the outside of the building to wait in the cold. This of course was not down to Costa but the tour Company we had booked with which I shall not use again. Overall I would not recommend this cruise line to English paying passengers it seems a waste of good money especially when other cruise lines offer more competitive prices Read Less

We were going to Italy with some friends for a couple of weeks. We thought that it would be fun to include a cruise midway in our vacation. This cruise left from Civitavecchia (Rome) and was quite reasonable. It included ports of Marseille, France, Barcelona, Spain, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Palermo, Sicily, Italy & Savona, Italy. At every port, there were people boarding and departing, which wasn't a problem and actually worked out quite well as boarding went quite fast. Our boarding time started at 12:30. We are arrived at 1:30. There was no one in line ahead of us and we walked right on. This is the first time that we have not waited for an hour or two in lines! So the trip started very positive! We had read that there is only a cold breakfast buffet unless you ate in the dining room, so that was not a surprise, but there buffet was large & certainly was very, very good. And we also ate in the dining room once and were very happy with it also. The entertainment was fun and no problems with language. The dinners were excellent & the waiters could have not been better. We wondered how the mandatory life drill would be, with 6 ports, would we have to attend 6? Would we wait though 2 or 3 or 4 languages? No problem! They have that figured out as well. English language - went to a show room where we sat and watched a video, They have this all figured out for everyone and we only went to 1 life boat drill, incidentally. After reading some reviews, we were apprehensive, but we could have not been happier. By the way, our cabin was the largest cabin that we have ever had! Read Less

I took my 18 year old granddaughter on the cruise for a graduation present. I usually go on the Princess Line (although I had been on two other Costa cruise many years ago) but this cruise fit our timing and most of the ports we wanted to visit. I cannot say enough about how bad the food and service (in the restaurants) was: * The buffet lines are very long (we stood in line for 30 minutes several times) and you have to stand in different lines for different items (same for beverages - they do not take your drink order). *In the sit down restaurant for dinner, the service was really bad. One night my granddaughter received her entrée when others received their salad. One man at our table received his entrée when others received their dessert. *In the sit down restaurant for breakfast they do offer a limited menu that you can order from and they also have a small buffet set up. It is impossible to get a waiter to take your breakfast order so we ended up going to the buffet in the restaurant (at least we were seated and didn't have to hunt for a seat like you have to do in the buffet restaurant). *Coffee and tea isn't served/offered after breakfast. You need to go to a bar area and pay after breakfast. * They charge for pizza (not available until 7 pm), ice cream and hamburgers. They do offer a hamburger at the grill by the pool but it isn't very good, and the grill is not always open (our at sea day the grill was closed). The grill is the only place to get French fries. * You have to pay for room service (other than coffee/tea, cereal, muffins). Plus you need to have a premium room in order to get room service. * The sit down restaurant is only open for lunch for 1 1/2 hours. If you go on an excursion it's not an option. * All cruise lines have specialty restaurants, but Costa also has a section on their dinner menu that have items that you need to pay for. * Other cruise lines have one side of the dinner menu that you can order these items at any time (on Princess, you can get shrimp cocktail at any dinner). The choices on Costa were a couple pasta dishes (and they were not good). Shrimp was never offered except for one night and the entrée was pasta with shrimp (there was ONE, tiny shrimp on the pasta). * The only time a steak was offered was on formal night - then we received a well done piece of meat wrapped in puff pastry. * If you're traveling with children or teens (or a picky eater) there is basically nothing for them to eat during the day (have to wait for the pizza and hamburger sections to open at 7 pm). We ate off the ship as often as we could. Read Less

We’re experienced cruisers, but this was our first time on Costa. We selected this cruise because it sailed from Venice (which we love) and because there were a couple of the ports that we hadn’t visited previously. The embarkation process went smoothly and we were delighted with our cabin. It was a mid-level balcony and had plenty of storage space and room to spread out. We loved every port and felt that we had adequate time in each one. The food was surprisingly good!! The breakfast buffet had lots of choices that were properly prepared. Dinners were terrific. Absolutely no complaints with the food. We were pleasantly surprised that smoking was very restricted and did not cause us any problems. I was a bit concerned about taking a Costa cruise since it’s considered “budget.” Fortunately, those fears proved to be unfounded and I would gladly book another Costa Cruise. One other thing...a couple of days after we completed this cruise we took a 12 day MSC Cruise out of Barcelona. What a contrast! The MSC cabin (same category) was tiny and the food...oh my goodness. It was just awful. Never again! Read Less

It should be nice trip with my girlfriend and also first experience on the cruise with Costa Favolosa and will be probably our last. This ship is very poorly administered and lacks organization more than 2,500 people eating at two times, we could go for a dinner at 21.15 pm. We waited for order the drinks half an hour, the appetizer came in the another 15 min. We were charged for water, I can understand that you have to pay for wine but water is the essence of life, please, this should be free. The food was not of good quality. After dinner we wanted visit some entertainment, the shows were not so good, we were bored most of the time. Horror was waiting for us in the cabin, when we wanted lay down to the bed, we heared terrible sounds over our ceiling. At the reception, we found out that there is a cowboy party on top of us. We were assured that it ended at 12pm but finally ended at 1.30am. After that, we asked for a change of cabin it was allowed the next day in the evening The ship was too crowded, lots of little kids who did what they want. In the breakfast buffet it was hard to find a place, for example to prepare the fried eggs was the queue for 30 minutes Another strange thing was that you had to pay to use shuttle bus from ship to the city visited. That should have been included. Finally, we were glad we left the ship, never again Costa Cruises Read Less

Hi, we are a couple in early 60s, physically fit and enjoy the port activities. It is about a year since I last cruised with Costa. We did it then because it was cheap and again chose this 4 day cruise , Savona/Barcelona/ Marseilles in November to complete a cheap winter break. The cruise was a surprise, some things radically improved, some things excellent and many important things so bad it defies all logic why Costa should behave the way they do. First of all the prices on board, all up 10% in the last year. All prices in Euros. Compulsory tipping now 10 per day. Cocktails mostly 8.20 plus 15%. Cheaper prosecco 25 plus 15%. We do not buy any of the daily booze deals as we cannot work out any way they could be good value for us. There are other important reasons to avoid them unless you intend to drink in the more unsocial hours (please read on). Food - buffet still limited but the vast majority of food on offer was good. Coffee (poor) available only at breakfast. Free fruit juices are flavoured sugar. Dining - wow what an improvement. Food warm and sometimes hot and really, really good especially if you like Italian food. Service from our waiter Edgar was excellent despite the huge pressure placed upon him (and all other Costa staff). Cocktails are still the poorest on any cruise line we have experienced. Getting on and off the ship - Costa still the best. Quick and prompt. They manage to behave as if it is as simple as it really is. Why cant other cruise lines copy them? The one trip we went on was good and good value although the port transfers were very expensive for those not taking a trip. Now to some serious downsides. The bars and saloons on this ship are mostly confined to deck 5. They are large but the bar areas are small. The coffee lounge is small. By keeping all but one bar area shut before and after dining time they herd all the passengers into a confined area. Around the bars themselves, the queue can be 3 or 4 deep. Sitting down it can be almost impossible to attract waiting staff, although they are working flat out. You need to allow about an hour to place an order and then receive your drink. Watching staff being pursued by passengers trying to place an order is a sorry sight. On one night we eventually managed to order pre-dinner drinks but they only arrived 5 minutes before dinner was starting. It was hopeless. I chatted to staff in quieter moments and they said it was always like this. To enable you to get the picture, imagine 60% of the bar areas shut and the people all corralled into one space. If you have bought a drinks package, or worst of all, the coffee package you are not going to be happy. The staff were cheerful but not surprisingly tempers got a bit short amongst passengers. So, is it a deliberate ploy by Costa to sell as many drinks packages as possible and then limit consumption by making ordering any beverage very difficult? Thats what it looked and felt like. Could not discuss this with management because management only appear to parade themselves to applause, again and again and again, then disappear. The ratio of passengers to staff on Costa is very high (one of the ways they keep costs down). I have never seen staff work harder or be more polite. They really were great. Staff are so sparse however that you had to decide whether you wanted you room cleaned in the morning or night. Compared with other cruise lines this appeared to be a 40-50% reduction in cabin cleaning. We chose to be cleaned in the morning. It worked well and I thought it a sensible cost saving. For my wife, important aspects of a cruise are to be able to drink a pre-dinner cocktail in pleasant surroundings and occasionally to dress formally for dinner. Costa had already removed the latter pleasure by the last time we cruised with them. Now they have removed the former as well. The shows on each night were better than our last Costa cruise. For me they rank equal bottom of the many cruise lines I have experienced , along with MSC. If you have cruised with Princess /Celebrity or Cunard I think you would consider it very clearly inferior but frankly not bad for the price point. We are travelling with Costa again from Dubai in February 18 because I wish to invest in the many excursions available rather than a luxury ship. I just hope the bar situation is sorted by then. My first cruise was only a good month ago with the MSC Fantasia so I don't have much to compare with. We booked the cruise on Costa Favolosa because it was pretty cheap and we had a good experience on MSC. We opted for the cheapest cabin without balcony. A few days before departure we got notice that they improved us to a balcony cabin without extra cost. Very nice! Embarkation was smooth, we were about the only people boarding at the time, but there was no real welcome. Our cabin was immediately ready tho so we started with unpacking our bags before proceeding to a bar. Service throughout the cruise was very slow with a lot of unfriendly personnel, especially at the bars. We had to wait up to 30 minutes to receive our drinks. After 1am it was only possible to get drinks in the disco since all the other bars closed. On one evening the disco had 2 barkeepers that couldn't keep up with the demand so waiting times even extended. Especially because 1 of the 2 was clearly incompetent and seemed to work in slow motion mode (not on purpose, she just couldn't do any better). A majority of the cruise we were waiting on drinks. We had the Più gusto drinking package which included most of the cocktails and most of the cheaper stronger drinks. Maybe the slow service is a way to keep the cost down on those packages. The food was pretty mediocre. The buffet was pretty limited and repetitive in style with long waiting lines, and people trying to ignore those waiting lines, at rush hour due to the fact the buffet was small as well. Compared to MSC where you had 6+ segments of the same food to spread the people out a bit, you have 2 (even smaller) segments on Costa. For dinner we opted for the second seating in the middle restaurant (9pm) but were instead placed in the back restaurant (9.15pm). Not really a big problem on itself but it turned out to be due to a lot of vibrations coming from the engines which made the dining experience very unpleasant. The food there was okay overall. I also had a problem with the fact that it is impossible to get food after the second dinner seating unless you opted to pay for a pizza or hamburger (till 1am). Especially for people that choose for the first dinner seating (6.15pm I believe) that is a very long time without included food. Doesn't feel very vacation like to me. Compared to MSC Fantasia the entertainment was a bit better. Better atmosphere, better live music and a better animation crew. There were some interactive shows with passengers in the grand bar that were kind of fun to watch. We saw 2 shows in the theater: 'Fire and Ice' which was very very good and another one which I can't remember the name of that wasn't. Starting from the evening the sea got pretty rough and there was a lot of wind. And oh boy did we feel that on the ship. According to the party I was with they never experienced that on any other ship except on Costa (twice) and they've done quite a few. I'm very glad this wasn't my first cruise experience but I'm also glad it is my last with Costa! Read Less

With only 3 exceptions (our dining room waiter Mark and two workers at the duty free shop) everyone on the cruise was very unhelpful. The crew also seemed unfriendly and unhappy in general. For example, I went early to the breakfast buffet at 6am, and I asked multiple crew members where an open buffet line: each pointed in a different direction. I had more luck wondering around by myself. The cabin seemed acceptable, however when I was packing I found two dirty socks in different parts of the cabin that were leftover from a previous guest. The food was generally inedible even in the dining room. The cooks at the pool breakfast buffet don't know how to make omelettes. Every day we smelled cigarette smoke in our room and when I asked a passing senior crew member for help he waved his hand at me and walked away without helping or any sympathy. At the casino we supposedly won several free drinks but there was never a waiter around to order one from (we spent several hours there hoping for a free drink the machines said we earned). We paid a lot for the piu gusto drink package, but whenever I asked for wine there were only two choices that were poor quality (I had better wine for 3 euros in Barcelona after the cruise). There were also only two beer options as well. Also, the piu gusto was frustrating because the bars were always crowded and understaffed so it took 10 minutes just to order a drink. We generally liked the excursions, but one of them was cancelled when we got on the ship and for another we were told to pick up our passports starting at 7:15 am. We showed up at 7:15am to wait in line, but they didn't retrieve our passports to start handing them out until 7:45. There was no communication or explanation as a long line formed and people were anxious about making the 8am excursion. One of our travel companions had an extra bar charge on her bill and when she complained before disembarking no one helped her and everyone told her to talk to someone else. The final straw is that on our reservation it clearly states we were to get two $50 onboard credits (total $100) and we only received one $50 credit. We spoke with three different crew members from the reception desk. The last copied my printout of our booking and said he would investigate and call me, but he never did and we never received a credit. I have been on several cruises and this is by far the worst I've ever been on. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the itinerary mostly. Even though I had heard negative comments for Costa, I thought I might try it. No cruise line is perfect. There was a slight language barrier, but that was to be expected. It was an Italian ship. The food was HORRIBLE. Everything was extra. Everything on the ship was in other languages, so it was difficult to participate. Children were allowed EVERYWHERE. There was not a place to get away from them. Even bars and casinos! We bought an expensive drink package. It was very difficult to get a drink. Servers were very nice and accommodating, but still difficult to get a cocktail. Kids would be sitting at the bar. Apparently, that's ok for the Italians. I did not care for that one bit. I did not see a buffet after 8 pm. You could not really get food (and several nights the dinner was so disappointing, I didn't eat much of it) unless you PAID for it. Are you kidding me? An ice cream cone was 1.50 Euro. No free ice cream on a cruise? Read Less

Just back from a med cruise. We had an excellent time well looked after by very helpful and friendly crew nothing was a problem for them.Food was excellent and varied although all meals had Italian theme. The shows were fantastic and repeated so you could have meal then see show or vice versa. The excursions were a bit pricey but makes life easy and hassle free in the short time you have onshore.Port buses at most locations give you the option to explore on your own.Embarkation and disembarkation was all very smooth and no problems or queues luggage was taken care off from cabin to shore. The friendly staff especially in the restaurants justified the gratuities at 10 euros per person.Ship was spotless although did take a few days to get used to layout but easy to get around with the many lifts. Well done Costa great value for money We will return again and won't think twice about going with Costa Read Less

We really enjoyed our costa cruise out of Barcelona 2 years prior to this one but this was a big disappointment. It started with the company charging us $100.00 just to put our friends names on the tickets that we bought, the travel company put our names on both cabins but no information was even entered. Anyway, they charged for everything right down to ping pong balls to play a game. We bought the drink package, but it took forever to get a drink, bartenders played games with the guests, ignoring them while cleaning up the bar, I guess they were looking for more tips. The staff was friendly but there wasn't much motivation to work since they already had their tips paid. Food was good and our waiter was excellent in the evening for dinner but the breakfast and lunch was miserable! It took forever to be served and the choices were very limited. We have been on many cruises and we enjoy it a lot but never again on Costa. We aren't that picky or demanding but this was very disappointing from previous cruises. There wasn't much in the way of entertainment, no trivia, or sports events. The room was kept at 75 degrees, so at night it was too warm so we had to keep the door open. My husband keep asking for them to check on the air conditioning but they said that was the lowest it would go down to. We had a mini suite so it was a good size and we were able to board earlier then everyone else, thank goodness because the lines were SO long to board. They said 2 hours to get our luggage but it turned into 5. I had a tray of drinks spilt on me and nothing to change into for 4 hours, quite a sticky wet four hours to wait. It just seemed like a bus going around, dropping people off and picking them up at different stops, we had a good time but we won't go with Costa again. Read Less

We did a Med. cruise on this ship and it was , well ok, but I couldn't say I would recommend it to anyone, in fact I would not recommend Costa t anyone other than an Italian, why, well it's because they don't really care about anyone much other than the Italian passengers. The annoncements are in Italian , sometimes repeated in English if you could call it that, very hard to understand most times, there are no english speaking TV channels other than the BBC news, excursions are only in Italian. No sour grapes here let's get that straight, I have done quite a few Costa cruises, why , well because they suited me and so I put up with the negitives. Sometimes on Costa, ships you are treated like a second class citizen if you are not Italian, on my last cruise our cabin was not made up for two nights after embarkation , we rang the service desk to be told that on coming passengers have priority , well hello who just got on, took two days for our cabin steward to say hello, hang on Cabin steward, not really just the maid so to speak unlike other ships and other cruise lines i have been on we had a dedicated cabin person usually a young chap who's job it was to make you feel at home and make sure you were happy, not on Mederiteranea . Food always a sore point with some but we found the food great, the buffet servery was fast flowing although you had to stand your ground when in line because certain Nationalities think they have some right to just push in. The meals in the dining room were also great and the service from the waiters was remarkable to say the least, they even smiled , even? yes even because something was not quite right on this ship it was hard to get a smile out of anyone, gone were the waiters with their jovial manner with a grin from ear to ear, yep they made having a beer or a wine enjoyable, Mediteranea is not a happy ship. Cruise itself was great Read Less

This was our first cruise ever; we didn't knew what to expect, but it was all very good and it won't be the last cruise we make. More than enough space on the ship. You don't notice that there are more than 2.000 guests on board. Nice room (inside cabin 1248). Friendly personel, enough place on deck to find a nice/silent spot to sit in the sun. The food is good; for dinner you can choice for a luxury dinersetting on deck 2 or self-buffet on deck 9. When having dinner on deck 2 (restaurant Taurus), it takes sometimes a bit longer to finish dinner and therefore coming to late for the entertainment in the theater. Every evening we got the daily program for the next day in our cabin. We were with the two of us. You can see than Costa cruises are interesting for family's with children, because there were quit a lot of them. Not many older people. We didn't wnet with a shore excursions; we did it all bij ourselves. That's the nice thing with cruising, you are never very far away from the cities. Read Less

Deck four we loved quite well , if you like to walk quite a bit, this deck was well made for this This was not our first cruise and we enjoyed also other companies as; - Royal Crarribean (2x) - Norwegian Cruiseline - Celebrity (2x) - Holland America Line And yes ,they were all good ,so also Costa Luminosa was. And no; this ship was not too noisy One demand from us to Costa; Please make Venice or for exemple Triesta a port where you have more control on (communication with port authorities) Read Less

The cruise in October was my 65th birthday present to myself and also the itinerary had great appeal, embarking in Barcelona. Interestingly , there were new passengers on a daily basis, so there were new faces most mornings at breakfast.I noticed at least 8-10 wheelchair bound passengers during the seven day trip, fantastic to have such provision for disabled people. For once , the British speaking passengers were the minority, which added to the fun we had. large Italian families travelling together in addition to other folk from all over the world.Offshore shuttles, for those of us not wishing to join booked excursions were punctilious and well organised. The office"staff' went to so much trouble to assist us on disembarkation day, we hade a late evening flight to Dubai, so they kept our luggage in the office and let us stay on Board until 15h00, they phoned the taxi company to change our collection time, all with a smile and such efficiency (Laura and Miekle) World Class Service indeed. Our first Costa cruise ,chosen for the ports that we had not been too. The ship is quite large in good condition, clean, with elaborate decor. Most of previous cruises have been with Royal Caribbean. It has some very different policies. Passengers were mixed mainly Italian French Spanish, only about 250 passengers spoke English, although most staff had reasonable english skills. The most notable was they sold Tea/coffee onboard packages\which suited the europeans. Now to get a cup of tea as long it was before 10am at breakfast or afternoon tea 4-4.45PM. you had to pay about Aus $4+. No tea served with lunch or dinner. Costa wins presentation prize for dinner. Extremely well presented entrees/mains but note they are only small portions, so if you are a big eater etc, you will have to double up. Once your 2 hours were up for your dinner setting they politely shunted you. Interestingly there was no real push to sell wine etc at dinners. Very different to R.C. and other cruise lines. No ice cream available anytime unless you paid. Like all cruise lines, no information is given in advance re port procedures etc. The daily news bulletin was not delivered till at least 7-8 pm the night before with no real info. Embarkation at Barcelona was a breeze as was departure. They did allow you to take wine etc on board at departure only. Our 10 day cruise actually was a combination of 3 itineries. with a lot of passengers joining at Savona, Marsaille (exit at Genoa , Marsaille next cruise). Interior activities were relatively quite with not a lot attendance it seemed. Again quality to me of the artists playing venues across the ship, were pretty average. The main entertainment was better, some good shows. However cruising days, (the weather for the Europeans was superb) drew everyone outside on the deck chairs. Some interesting points. On the decks there was no one pushing drinks even when the sun was out and decks packed. very different to normal cruises At breakfast there was only one point .in solarium, that you could get a cooked breakast. The same for breakfast cornflakes, bran etc. Only one place. You could (depending where you found a seat) walk 40-50 metres. Also other than breakfast , you could not get orange or apple juice. The staff to passenger ratio seemed to me to be much lower than other cruises I have been on. Cadiz , Malaga were the standouts, we took the 13 hour trip to Marrakech (not the costa coach deal) hired our own guide /vehicle (Memphis Tours). Good young driver. Guide in Marrakech spoke excellent english, but as usual they take you to shops (Carpets Furniture, Oils, Antiques jewellery etc). My advice is to be very explicit in telling guide you dont want to do this or that. These diversions do not get mentioned upfront) Long trip by private vehicle and coach is the only way to go. We enjoyed the cruise for the places, but if taking your first or first mediterean cruise, I would take an english speaking ship until you learn the ropes. Weather was superb , except for a force 10 gale, which delayed ship from leaving Marsaille for 2 hours. From Casablanca we took 2 and 1/2 days to sail to Valencia. Crawled really. Got off Valencia 1.3opm all aboard 6 pm . Why shorten the port stay ?? Read Less

the ship has 14 floors. floors 3-5 are the main floors for dinner and entertainment. prime rooms start on floor 6. you are assigned to a restaurant (two seated, one buffet) and a time 1830 or 2130. if you come after 1900 they wont let you in, and in fact, you wont have enough time to ear through all the courses until they evacuate you at 2045. drinks cost money during dinner, even water. prices are reasonable to a middle priced restaurant. drinking deals are good only to heavy drinkers, and all your table need to join. The service was bad and at time insulting. The staff looks mostly very sad and it looks like they are treated badly and have no joy in providing service. the worst were the breakfast crew and the front desk. Food was ok. not too good and not too bad. shows were nice Cabin was good the behavior of the ship was strange - I dont know why they confiscated our passports during our boarding. on the other hand they didnt take our credit card, but we were forced to give it later. there is a 20 Euro per day service charge you cant avoid, for the bad service you get, but still you should give tips if you want to get a smile from a service provider. staff were occasionally very rude to us with no reason, like in the first drill where we were told to stand in the middle of the room for no reason - we were shocked... during breakfast you can have a buffet on the 10th floor or a la carat on the 5th floor but the staff dont want you to order. its work for them so you need to know in advance 'your rights' to order otherwise they send you to the limited buffet in the center of the hall. there are two very very small swimming pools. one indoors and one out. we were surprised how little the pools are for so many people. the balcony family cabin we stayed in was roomy and nice. basic, but new and nice. the shows were really impressive and provide good entertainment The poor service we got did the job..and we will never return to Costa again Read Less

This was my 3rd cruise on Costa and absolutely terrible. The port times were by far the shortest of all the cruise ships. I emailed the cruise line numerous times to ensure one of the three cabins are a twin (and received confirmation in writing it will be done) which did not happen. There was a number of hidden expenses, with a total of nearly 500euros. Previously when on a cruise I was used that everything in the cruise was included. This time around you had to pay for every single thing additional, including playing table tennis. The 4D movie machine broke and we were sent back 3 times to go and watch the movie on different days and every-time you get there, it is still broken. Bad communication by especially the front desk. We were told to buy bingo tickets at X point but when you get there, they have changed the location without informing anyone. Then again none of the activities started on time. Followed the instructions for online check in one month prior to departure and was already on the way to the airport and still haven't received everyone's boarding passes and luggage tags which we had to print beforehand. Only two very small pools on board and with a large number of kids on board, could not make use of the pool or jacuzzi as there was just no space. The public bathrooms in communal areas were not cleaned regularly. Our sea day had bad weather and the ship is not geared to accommodate everyone indoors and the activities hosted resulted in people 'hanging around' because there is no place to sit. The drinks packages are badly compiled, i.e. on our drinks package we could get a whiskey and soda, but cannot get a bottle of soda on its own. You had to buy a water package additional. We could get cocktails but no orange juice. On the soft drinks package you can get cocktails, soft-drinks etc, but cannot get a coffee. After 09:30pm you cannot get any drinking water on the cruise, unless you pay exorbitant fees for water from the minibar. Nor do they allow you to fill your water bottle from the fountain (which is also disconnected at night) Neither can you get a cup of coffee before 07:00am and some days 07:30am, unless you contact room service. When they changed ports during the cruise, due to weather concerns they provided no information about the new destination. Also some of the unfriendliest serving staff at the bars. The bars was also badly staffed so you waited most times at least 10 - 15min for a drink. The breakfast buffet served the same food every single day with no variance. Lunch was the same everyday with only one meat option changed (some days). The dinners was average. Will not recommend to anyone. Read Less
