We liked the itinerary and it was a good value. The ship is beautiful with lots of really wood. It was well maintained and spotless. The itinerary changes due to the Covid-19 virus were NOT THE FAULT OF COSTA, and we believe that the cruise line, the ship's officers and the amazing crew did all that could be done to keep us safe and informed. The in room food service while we were quarantined was delicious and the wine was appreciated. I still can't believe that the kitchen was able to provide so many meals to everyone and our food arrive hot and beautifully presented. My heartfelt thanks to the Chef and his staff. My only regret was that we did not have to opportunity to buy some of the outstanding photographs that were taken of us. I felt quite safe on the Costa Luminosa where disinfecting was done repeatedly every day. I did find that the US government-provided charter flight home was very risky and exhausting and that the CDC evaluation were not adequate. I understand that people are scared and angry, but taking it out on Costa is irrational. This was our 34th cruise. We thougt that the on board credit and future cruise discount were generous and we will cruise with Costa again - God willing. Read Less

This was an RCI package cruise and the worst way to ever travel (bye bye RCI) because it was either a balcony on Costa/MSC or an interior room on the bigger names, like Royal. We decided to try Costa and it will be the last time. First, Costa likes to play the "we're separate entities" game when dealing between the host desk and tours. No one is responsible to the passenger but the department that doesn't belong to Costa, and they all belong to Costa! The food is horrible and what other reviewers say about closing down the buffet early is correct. I lost weight on this cruise..and while that is a surprise, it's only because the food was mostly disgusting. Do not order the daily fruit option -- first the produce grade is "C", which means it's barely good enough to sell at a discount but ready to ferment if you don't consume it right away. I have pictures of rotting fruit on day one and they REFUSED to cancel it. Every day we received rotting or near uber ripe fruit and seeded grapes. Even the plums, apples and kiwi were bruises and browning on the inside. Tours -- do not book ahead. They never sell out but if you have a medical emergency, they'll not release your spouse to help you seek medical attention and you'll lose money. I actually had a tour desk person laugh that we booked a tour on disembarkation day. Not only did his manager apologize but he was forced to go on our tour with us. Be that as it may, I just wanted to cancel it because they really are quite unprofessional and the costs far exceed the value. You're better off getting the shuttle to the city (or train to Rome) and doing it on your own. Balcony -- avoid deck 5 -- you're right over the life boats and there are bright lights shining all night long that will impede your ocean view. Our particular cabin had a slow drain in the shower and when they finally plunged it, enough hair to cover a hairpiece was recovered. Later I saw a man waiting in the forever-host-desk line yelling "when will they clear the sewage backing up into our room?!!" Clearly Costa doesn't maintain their rooms. We had a medical need onboard and the medical staff are phenomenal. If there could be activities and tours with the medical staff then this cruise would have been much more tolerable. Crazy, eh? Costa Luminosa trans-Atlantic Dec 2 - 20, 2014. A very disappointing cruise. Before the cruise we understood the drink packages were confusing and that was true. Water was not available in the dining room unless you bought a water package or brought your own bottle that you may have been able to fill during the breakfast or lunch hours at the buffet. Also cocktails or specialty coffee drinks were not available in the dining room even if you had purchased the drink package. Passengers had to obtain the drink or coffee at one of the available bars. So the evening meal had passengers carrying their own bottles or glasses which can be difficult while cruising, and the dining room became more of a buffet looking experience rather than a place to be waited on. For the most part the food was below expectations and the service was very slow. Often the entertainment in the dining room happened before the entrees arrived. The most memorable part of the entire time was the lines. Two hours for embarkation and 3 hours for disembarkation is excessive. Every port stop also had lines even at the quay side ports. Watching the staff stopping reembarking passengers while crew disembarked, or stopping the entire process to watch passengers with disabilities struggling up or down gangways with no help from Costa was very disturbing. If there were any service issues, Costa staff was not interested in resolving them. It took a service manager to do any correction. It got very old to hear "not our policy" from the staff. I also noticed a lack of concern or interest in any issues raised by an American on this cruise. The bias of the staff was very evident during the 3 hour disembarkation. When you purchase suite accommodations, an expectation of service goes with it. Costa did not deliver. We had a cruise on Costa Magica in 2006 will no issues, and have traveled on 40+ cruises by Carnival, NCL, RCCL, Oceania, Viking and Uniworld lines. We will never cruise Costa again.   Read Less

Our bad cruise experience on the Costa Luminosa. Dec 2-20th 2014, from Sovana Italy to Miami, 18 day transatlantic cruise. Here are a list of negative things we experienced from our cruise recently on the Luminosa by Costa: We had a panoramic suite # 8374. Renesa our room steward was very well trained in cleaning and housekeeping with 7 years experience she told us. But everything else was horrible !! 1:No one seems to know what they are doing in the Costa Cruise I took. Upon getting off the ship I called the night before and the clerk said if I was a US citizen I did not have to go to the theater for immigration checkout. In the morning I was told I had to go to the theater first. Which later turned out to be false. Unacceptable. 2: I was supposed to have priority disembarking with the Panoramic Suite. Not so. I was given a white luggage tag and told to wait in the long waiting line for debarking like the rest of the cabins. No one knew where we had to go, and it was one big mess of over crowdedness of persons everywhere. The staff did not know what to do and gave false information and directions continuously. Unacceptable. 3: The butler service I was suppose to get daily was non existent. I did not get daily service calls from the butler and only saw him twice. The first butler put dirty sink water in my suite in room thermos, so I had him dismissed due to negligence and irresponsible actions. Another butler came and I saw him only twice during the entire cruise. No service as promised. Unacceptable. 4: The rooms constantly reeked of smells coming in from the bathroom drains and sinks as well as the ventilation system . So we had to leave the balcony door open continuously. Unacceptable. 5: There movies on the ship were all at a surcharge of almost 9 Euros. No free movies or on board activities accept some stupid silly games and poolside cha cha cha lessons which was the same thing every day and night in the lounge. Just lessons 1,2,3. Stupid and totally boring with no diversity. Unacceptable. 6:There was no live entertainment or shows in the theater lounge accept one acrobatic skit which was nothing and the rest were all prerecorded shows on film. Unacceptable. 7: The food was horrible, over cooked all the time, over salted. NO bran muffins or dry granola for breakfast, the dry cereals were very low quality . Unacceptable. 8: The food servers did not know how to speak English very well and often misunderstood and/or did not understand at all the orders or questions . Unacceptable. 9: The food servers did not know how to service, properly serving the food, pour coffee etc…correctly Unacceptable. 10: The pancakes we ordered were barely warm in both the upstairs buffet and the breakfast sit down restaurant in the mornings, and often were out right cold. Unacceptable. 11: The water machines for clean drinking water were constantly out of order. I was told they were waiting for parts in the next dock. But the same problems keep occurring and the machines were constantly out of service during the entire duration of the trip. I took many pictures of this. Unacceptable. 12:The ice cream machines were out of service for the entire duration of the trip and were being prepped for the next cruise on the evening of the 19th , as I took photos of the machines to show they were being prepared for the next cruise to be operational. So we were cheated and cut off from this service without any notices. Unacceptable. 13: The gym smelt moldy all time and inadequate ventilation for clean air and pure air was not available . The air system was not working correctly. Unacceptable. 14: The bicycles and treadmills did not have any of the on screen programming working for viewing news or TV or whatever. Only one program was working from the entire selection and it was only in German. Unacceptable. 15:The Spa was a joke. The water in the dead sea Jacuzzi was cool-warm, never hot by Jacuzzi standards. The steam room and sauna was not working correctly and the sitting rock relaxation chairs were not hot or just slightly warn. This was a joke. Unacceptable. 16:Gala night the prime rid was as tough as rubber and the Matre de that was on then also complained to the chef that t his was unacceptable . This Matra de from Italy flu back home from Catalina for his vacation for two months on the 16th of Dec. Unacceptable. 17:The dinning room occasionally had some waiters and wait employees from the Philippines doing some short skits with music which was in such bad taste. Where they wore white gloves and held there crotches in sexual suggestions and rubbing their buts to the ground in some very bad taste type of choreography . Horrible and very much sexual suggestive. This was done three times for a total of around 54 minutes each time. Garbage and like some side street show, not one expected from a professional and experienced cruise line. Unacceptable. 18: I called to have my jacket pressed for the Dec 18th gala dinner and the house keeping person came., not the butler. And brought me back the jacket wrinkled everywhere , worse than when I gave it to them. I took photos of it and had to call the desk to complain and they took the charge off . He promised me that it would be back to my satisfaction without any wrinkles in it, or it would be free. The way I got it back is as if it was never pressed and only held and given back to me after being bungled up more, since it was in worse condition when I got it back from when I gave it to them. What kind of service and company runs a business like this? Unacceptable. 19: I had to go upstairs every night to find clean water from one of three machines to find out which one was working correctly so I could fill my in room thermos. I had to service myself constantly. Unacceptable. 20: The water machine sensors did not work correctly and need to be updated with modern equipment. The ice machines were constantly out of ice and a ice chest had to be put on the side for ice for the passengers since the machines were not working most of the time. Unacceptable. 21:The buffet in the aft of the ship on the deck where the rear pool is was closed all the time. Unacceptable. 22: The middle of ship pool was netted off and not in use most of the trip accept for the last few days of the cruise . Only the pool at the aft was open and the Jacuzzi. Unacceptable ! 23: The overhead closure in the middle pool area was closed most all the time , even in good sunny weather and was only opened the last few days of the cruise. Unacceptable ! 24: No one told us we had bottled water service in the restaurants without state room class until I accidentally found out by asking why another table was getting bottled gas water each night by the glass. Unacceptable. 25: A fire broke out on engine 4 early AM when we were at sea crossing the Atlantic. We were told constantly by sources that the ship was going to abort the cruise and stay docked at St. Johns so the engine could be fixed with parts being flown in. Then we heard another story that were going to have the option of being flown home from there. Another story was that if they could fix the engine the next cruise set for the 20th -27th was going to be reloaded to another Costa cruise liner. This was just added stress and did not allow us to make adequate preparations for our trip outside excursions , which we always booked from outside the ship and never used the ships excursions due to lack of trust and professionalism. 26: I have videos and the passenger Gabriella in 8303, and the Ken and Eric in room 8376 also experienced many of the same problems and complaints and you can contact them directly . ken and Eric said they were going to complain to Carnival cruise lines once they got home. 27: I also have videos of the passengers who were complaining about the dirty and unclean air in their rooms air supply and many passenger got sick with coughing constantly during the entire trip including my wife. I have recorded videos from many passengers confirming this . Videos available upon request. 28: Costa still has pending per-authorization charges, from Dec 13th, 2014, that they have not released from my credit card account as of this date still pending Dec 29th 2014 at my bank. One week after they charged the final invoice for my service charges. More proof of their slipshod operation and lack of experience, and professionalism in accounting and the industry . The food was absolutely terrible, not edible many times, over salted,. Over cooked and just bad quality without exception. There are other things as well. But I am frankly burned out on logging all the things and issues that were negative . I also need to mention that while crossing the Atlantic Engine #4 caught fire in the early AM and all the power went out in the ship. This was around 5 AM. The engine was eventually fixed . The ship was running on the other engines for a few days. I had direct view of the engines path in the water since we had the Panoramic Suite on the 8th floor overlooking the entire back and right side of the ship. I brought all these issues up to the desk as they were happening and only got a line of empty chatter, and false promises most of the time. I sent a copy of my complaint here into Costa cruise line administrative office and was totally ignored. Not one word or reply. Just be aware when your booking a cruise with this ship what to look forward to. Maybe they will change things in the future since they are docked in Miami now for 2 months doing the Caribbean area. But I seriously doubt it.   Read Less

Staff is A+,house keeper Christopher Cabbo and waiter Jonathan González are 5 stars on my book and in general all the where always helpful. On the flip side of the coin...They charge for everything. The charge for water at the restaurant and they don't have the buffet after 1:30 pm,if you are hungry you most dress and go at the restaurant. The don't have coffee after 10pm and they charge for pizza after 5pm.I enjoy drinks with my wife at the pool BUT no staff to serve can you IMAGINE!That's a first for me,other cruiselines bombard you with fancy drinks which we love.No art auctions and entertainment at the theater was ok.They charge for tv movies or you only have a choise of 1 free movie a day in tv over and over again and 3 movies for the rest of the 18 nights!Bartenders at the disco did not knew how to make a cuba Libre(rom and coke), did not know how to make the drink of the day, he had to ask 2waiters and a manager!.I be live they are short on personel and trying trying there best on saving money and staff.Everyone I talk had the same feeling about the matter and most desapointed.I will mention that the ship broke in the middle of the atlantic at night, one of the engine explode and it was on fire for a hour, we where stock with no power for 2hours.I wail say that in general Costa in in the last ship we will think when we plan our next adventure...... I have always loved Costa, going back to the Fredrico C, Carla C, and Flavian. Service was very European and luxurious-we had this 3 years ago on the Costa Serena, so when we decided to go westbound transatlantic we chose the Costa Luminosa for the trip - the itinerary contained 8 ports we never docked at (impressive sine we have over 100+ cruises under our belts. The ports were interesting but the ship's excursions were VERY EXPENSIVE compared to other Carnival Corporations other lines offerings. The cruise staff while always trying, was not very understandable in English - and all activities were mostly in Italian unless you asked for some English, and then it was not understandable and very very brief. The cruise director was no where to be found during the day or evening except for his MCing main shows or evening events including the Master of the vessel who was always interacting with his cruisers. In the daily program, dining options were listed but never appeared, craft projects were scheduled and the ship did not have the supplies. The food on the ship always sounded great, but was tasteless, meat extremely tough as rubber and over cooked, and vegetables consisted of one or two morsels. The Indian and Phiiipine food staff were very accommodating and always communicative and smiling as were the Maitre D's assistants. The bar staff was friendly and accommodative, but NOT the bar supivisors (managers) who spoke down to the passengers. we spoke to other passengers and got the comments like the cruise was rubbish, disappointing, etc. In the last three years you have to pay for pizza, ice cream, deck games, etc. Cruises were always all inclusive except for bar, laundry, excursions, etc. Every time you turned around you had to pay, so while the fares appear to be lower, Costa makes it up by"nickel and diming" the passengers. While everyone was friendly, and smoking has been contained to designated areas, the passengers would not give others the opportunity to get out of an elevator before pausing you out of the way and pushing their way into elevators. The most exciting event was while in the North Atlantic we experienced an engine room fire that was quickly extinguished, but the passengers were milling about and groups going to the muster stations as information was not being given frequently from the bridge or cruise staff. The event awoke the whole ship about 4:30 am. Al and all I don't think I would recommend Costa or sail Costa in the future - I will cruise on other Carnival Corp's other lines aimed at the American/Canadian customer.   Read Less

Very mixed feelings about Costa. The best service from the staff and some of the best food that we have ever had on a cruise ship! We did all our research and knew that our shore excursions may get cancelled for lack of English speaking quest and they were. The tour desk was very helpful re booking us with our choice of languages, we chose German for Casablanca and Rabat. Took lots of pictures but do not know what we were taking pictures of. LOL! The bar staff especially Mojan Tayao and Rossele Lucas knew us by name after our first visit to their bar, what a pleasure getting to know them! Suite butler, Marvin and the cabin steward Aswawi provided impeccable service for all eighteen days. Our waiter at table #229, Benny and his assistant Kadek were terrific in every respect. Food portions in the mdr were of perfect size and excellent quality. The buffet is crowded and we starting timing when we would go to avoid the largest crowds. During our crossing we met many English speaking Europeans and now have new good friends from Holland, what fun! Do your homework, go with an open mind and enjoy a beautiful staff and ship!   Read Less

After reading all the negative reviews we were very apprehensive about stepping aboard Costa Luminosa for our 28 day trans Atlantic cruise. All I can say is you don't believe all that you read. The first issue was language as Australians & English as our only language ,we had no difficulty in communicating with the staff and crew ,all shows included English and shore excursion are offered in English . Next was food. We found the food in the Taurus restaurant excellent and staff went out of their way to cater for my dietary requirement , they even had a gluten free only section. Smoking is now restricted to very few areas of the ship. Another plus was that we were seated with other English speaking passengers who had the same itinerary as we did. The staff on board are so professional , friendly and helpful. Finally I want to say that was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable cruises we have been on and were sad when it was time to disembark. We have no hesitation in sailing with Costa again Read Less

We have done 11 transatlantic crossings. I am reluctant to ever answer the question as to which was the best or worst. I have never posted a review prior to this, but felt compelled this time for two reasons. Very few, on this board comment on Costa, and most I have read tend to be somewhat negative about many aspects. We have been on many lines over the past 20 years. Costa is very European. Out of the 2200 plus onboard, only 40+ were Americans, English language, thanks to the Aussies, Brits, and Swedes was not non-existent but very hidden.Announcements were in multiple languages, but many times English was not included. In spite of many comments, the food was very acceptable, even better some evenings. The service was as good as any we have had. Wait staff was professional, wanting to please, and remembered our individual "favorites" from night to night. We had a table mate, who was a strict gluten-free, and she was given very special attention and menus at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Costa has found ways to trim the budget, which is probably not unique to them. If you need six to ten towels a day for pool, etc. you will be disappointed. They give you two beach towels at the beginning of the cruise, and you are expected to use those (trading them out as often as you want), but no more. Other measures, that would fall into this category, are evident, but these are small inconveniences, and, for us, did not stand in the way of great enjoyment. Two areas deserve special recognition. The bartenders were among the best we have ever encountered. We had the all-inclusive package, and, though pricey, was a great addition to our cruise. They meet you, remember you, and try to please...maybe the best we've ever encountered. The wait staff in the dining room was outstanding...very experienced, brought us many items by special order...and quickly. We were in early seating at 6:15 and always out of dining room by 7:45, contrary to some reviews about slow service. Yes, some of the Italians, French, and Germans would not be patient enough to stand in lines, but this was not a majority, and we have been to Europe so many times, it has become something we accommodate and laugh about. We were blessed with wonderful weather, great ports, and "spot on" navigation and maneuvering of the ship. Costa, with its obvious distractions with Concordia, should be proud of its ability to provide us with a wonderful experience. Read Less

We were very impressed with the ship when we boarded. This went rapidly down hill when we realised Costa had such a bad Smoking Policy. All areas had smoking areas, but the problem was that non-smokers were overwhelmed by the smoke from these areas. Every night we went to our cabin smelling of smoke. I caught a cold after a couple of days, which was made worse by cigarette smoke. To add to our distaste withe the public areas, in the 2nd week there was an overwhelming smell of sewage! Particularly in the region of the bar in the Atrium, the Casino and the Bar Electra, where the majority of the activities were held. I was not impressed with the lack of eating choices in the evening. If you didn't want to eat in the dining room, the only other option was buffet pizza with grown, wilted green leaves. However, the waitress served pizza after 9.30 pm was good. There were a choice of 4 individual pizzas, but no sides were available. Cabin was spacious and well-appointed. It was class as a premium cabin which cost £45 pp extra. This gives you free room service and choice of dining time. But once you chose your dining time either Early or Late, there was no further choice. So to say you could chose when you eat is nit accurate. On the plus side, the staff were excellent. Everyone was pleasant and helpful. Read Less
