(Costa Smeralda Italy, France & Spain 7 day cruise Jan 4-11, 2020) It's a huge brand new ship that is sailing on a 7 day continuous loop between Rome, La Spezia, Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, and Palma. We were on the ship for its 3rd week of cruising. Here are a few of our observations and a couple of tips. Positives: - Price was very reasonable (but watch out for all the extras). - Clean and brand new. - Plenty of hot water in shower. - Beds were firm but comfortable. - Crew members were friendly and helpful for the most part. - Ferrari and Campari bars were nice to visit once you could figure out your drink package (you need at least the 2nd level from the top). - 21 bars and lounges - Tours were well organized. - Water park on deck 18 had 4 slides for kids. - Other sports areas and activities such as tennis and basketball. Negatives: - Costa smartphone app can’t be downloaded for USA passengers so you can't use the app for any information on board. - On board Internet did not work. - Very difficult to purchase bottle water to bring back to our cabin. - All of the restaurants were at the back of the ship on decks 8,7,6,& 5. - Buffet meals for breakfast & lunch in all restaurants, not just the buffet. - Waiter service at breakfast and lunch means that they will show you to a table and then clean the table after you leave. No option for a sit down meal except at dinner. - Food was only available at designated times (including the buffet). - At some meal times only 1 restaurant would be open which resulted in huge lines and running out of coffee, cups, plates, etc. - Breakfast food was exactly the same everyday. - Be aware that you will have to search high and low for coffee. - Pizza was only available for an extra fee at one designated restaurant. - Burgers were only available for an extra fee in the sit down dinner restaurants and NOT at lunch or during other times during the day. - Ice cream was only available at one location (for an extra fee) and NOT in the dining room. - Drink packages are very confusing (we upgraded to the middle priced one) - Beer is only Heineken on draft. That's it.... nothing in bottles or cans. - There are just 3 small swimming pools and 4 hot tubs. - Spa pool was small and very crowded. - Entertainment was one 30 minute show per evening in a very small theater with first come first sit down and then everyone else is standing up and blocking your view. No drinks are served in the theater. - Rehearsals in the center theater spanning decks 6,7,&8 were running throughout the entire afternoon and the actual show was performed only at 11:30pm one time per day. - Our Passports were taken from us when we boarded the ship in Italy. After speaking with other people from the USA who were able to keep their passports in their possession it took us 4 trips to the Reception desk on deck 7 to have ours returned to us. Be sure to keep your passport in your possession. - It was very difficult to understand what was happening because announcements were made in many different languages. - Elevators were super crowded at meal times. We used the stairs for extra exercise. - Completely separate from Carnival so your prior cruises and status doesn't apply. So what are our tips? - Not a ship for adults looking for a relaxing, romantic, peaceful, calm, restful, quiet Mediterranean cruise. - A ship with a lot of rules. - Not for people that like pizza and burgers. You even have to pay for ice cream! An extra fee for everything. They don’t offer any snacking between meals as an option. Is this a new type of cruise diet? - Not for people that need assistance walking and getting around (wheel chairs or walkers) because the elevators are very crowded and the ship is extremely big and spread out. In summary this is NOT for people that like pizza, burgers, ice cream, wings, coffee, bottled beer, or relaxed fine dining. Read Less

Worse cruise I have ever gone to. Terrible food. They promote 17 restaurants. These include nutella bars, ice cream, sports bar, and like three or four light meal/tapa places. One is only available to costa members and one only for those with families. You’re left with the assigned restaurant which serves terrible food, a pizza place, and a teppanyaki. The buffet basically serves italian food with very limited options. The restaurants and constantly closing and opening. At one point there was nothing open and we refused to eat at the buffet. We initiallu thought that maybe the real italian food was simply different to the italian food we are used to at our home town. However, the food in the different cities we visited was fantastic. The breakfast is basically an expanded continental breakfast. The ship is new and we were excited since cruises deteriorate with time. However, staff members were not trained. None of them could tell us where the different restaurants or different things were in the ship. The excursions are a ripoff. For a 5 hour excursion you’d spend 2 hours getting there and 2 hours getting back, with an hour to take quick pictures of the monument. You barely have enough time to eat. One of the excursions was at 2:30. By the time we arrived, it was already starting to get dark. The fitness room is too small for the amount of people. And they don’t even let you use the aerobic room which was for paid classes. However every single time I went to the gym, the aerobic room was completely empty while I was trying to find some space to use the dumbbells. If you’re still planning to go, make sure you check your credit card constantly. We were charged 200 dollars for no reason. Which came at no surprise since during our trip to the spa, about 3 other persons were there to complain about mystery charges to their credit cards. Other than that, the staff was nice and the rooms and cruise were very clean. Read Less

If you are a North American traveller and have done cruises with American companies (Royal, Carnival, NCL etc.) you will be extremely disappointed. The service sucks - not enough staff to accommodate all the guests. The employees are rude and do you a favour they want to help you. The service is super slow and takes forever to get anything. The food options are mediocre, really nothing special at all. The shows were somewhat ok but the problem is that most of them are in Italian. I know 3 languages and it was difficult to get by with staff and understanding the entertainment. Moreover, they make announcements in 5 different languages which is super annoying that you have to listen to them 5 times a day. The service desk staff are rude and that’s a compliment. Really horrible cruise line with horrible service. Do not waste a dollar with them - they are TERRIBLE!!! Read Less

I love cruising and have been on many before. My partner however had never been. We thought a Costa short break would be a great way to introduce him. I’ve travelled on Costa before so I knew it wouldn’t be the same standard as Royal Caribbean or Princess but we are so disappointed with Costa after this trip that I will never cruise with them again. The apathy of the staff and customer service representatives are the most disappointing elements. We decided to get a suite which came with some nice perks like a free pass to the spa, a drinks package, personal butler, and free access to the club restaurant. Most of these things were not worth the ticket price. The room was great and always clean - we really cannot complain about the quality of the rooms, they are dated but comfortable. This is true for the entire ship really- everything looks like it was designed in the 90s but is still clean and functional. However this is not enough to make me consider cruising with them again. Our main complaints surround their customer service. 1) before we left for the cruise we called up to find out the itinerary- with most cruise lines they give these to you in advance so you know dress codes and arrival times for the ports. We never received this so I called Costa (I massively regret not emailing now). They told me we arrived in Barcelona at 8am and could disembark at 9am. We booked a tour of Sagrada Familia (not with Costa) for 12:30. Well it turns out that was incorrect and we didn’t arrive until 1300. We wasted 50€ on tickets that were unusable (we tried but failed to get in). We returned to the ship and spoke to the hospitality desk. They told me I was too vague and they couldn’t do anything. Despite phone records proving I made a call to them they decided I was wrong and simply misunderstood what I was told. No compensation given. 2) when playing in the casino one evening we won 180€ playing poker. We cashed out on our Costa card and left for our cabin, we were pleased and thought hey this compensates a bit for the missing 50€ from earlier. Unsure of how the casino works we just assumed this credit would be applied to our final bill but we didn’t receive the final bill until the morning of disembarking. Highly unusual for a ship as it give the customer no time to register any issues with their final bill. This is when we realised that we needed to get the cash from the casino directly. Again we went to hospitality who said no problem it will open at 9and we can get the money then. We waited for 45 minutes and no one came. They kept saying just wait someone is on their way but if we stayed any longer we would have missed our flight so we had to leave. We instantly contacted Costa and asked to be compensated and we were told too bad. This left us 230€ in the hole with the two issues combined. It’s interesting that they have no problem charging the room for the casino but have big issues crediting the room. Other issues we encountered: Using the spa - they fail to tell you that you can only use your free access to the spa when in port. We came back early from Marseille to use the spa and the entire time we were there they had tours going through the spa. I was changing in the change room and had a constant stream of new passengers taking a tour of the facilities. I found this very humiliating and uncomfortable- not the relaxing experience I was hoping to have. The club restaurant - you get the same food as the main dining hall. We saw no difference except we didn’t have a set dining time and it was quieter. However with this also meant we missed out on some of the fun of the main dining hall and didn’t get the farewell celebration that the main restaurants got. The drinks package was great - no complaints on this end. Definitely worth it to not have to worry about your drink bill. Our butler was polite but I’m not sure what he did. Definitely wasn’t worth the extra service charge we were charged for his apparent services. Anytime we spoke to someone we simply asked for on board credit - we would have happily spent this money on board or something towards future travel but every time Costa replied too bad and they hope it doesn’t affect our trust in Costa. Well it certainly has and I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to convince my partner to cruise again. If you decide to cruise with Costa get everything in writing and remember that this is a budget cruise. They couldn’t care less about your experience and are simply packing people on board to take as much as they can. We’ve been burnt by them and will avoid them forever. Read Less

After approximately 30 hours of Costa I asked my husband to check on the money back policy I would have done so earlier but we had our daughter and his mother with us and we had no alternative plans. This was by far the worst cruising experience we have ever had. Everything about it is bad. It's noisy everywhere all the time, there is no relief. The staff is rude. I've never seen rude staff on any ship with any other line. These crew members don't see you. The food is terrible, breakfast is a bunch of bread stuffs mostly sweet, nothing of interest. Lunch is a fight for anything decent. Lines for french fries!!! Can you believe that on an Italian ship you have to pay for Pizza and Gelato!!!!!!!?????!!!!!!! The entertainment is dumb and sexist, Benny Hill-ish ridiculous left overs from the 70s. Not even quiz can be done without having to wave your arms around and make whooping noises before getting the answers. There are new guests who come in with every port and thus there is the life vest/ security training most every day which is accompanied by repeated announcements in 7 or 8 languages. It is a non stop bombardment. The public areas are totally crowded, very little chance of getting a spot by the pool and even the halls are full with people who won't get out of the way by the end you hate everyone on the ship just for taking up space. I could go on and on but I hope you get the point. It's a cheap cruise and it should be, wouldn't go again for free. Read Less

chosen purely because of itinerary.Got off to a bad start when pick up bus at Nice Station didn't park where stated. First night on board, air conditioning noise in room was not put right until midnight.Next 2 days,no shower due to thermostat non function producing only boiling hot water.Tried to fix but didn't work,no shower that evening.Next day,put new thermo, didn't work either and again no shower that evening. Was I offered other room, shower elsewhere etc Big NO is the answer despite my protestations.Got no response from reception, cabin management or English rep for Costa.Eventually fixed by reversing the taps.Offered bowl of fruit as compensation and bottle of Prosecco,NO Thanks.Long Queues at reception for two mornings resulting in most giving up due to lack of staff. No lack of staff on trips booking desk though???? One of the last stops we made was Al Fujairah. What a dump of a port, full of shipping for oil tankers, oil storage tanks etc.You really have no choice but to pay to get out and do anything.Must be visited due to cheap berthing costs we be my bet. Will be writing to Costa re compensation.( was offered 150 Euros by Casino, but only because of my extensive spend in the casino) Final port Dubai was docked at 8am,had no choice but to get off as first passenger as my flight home was at 11.55 am,because passport was taken by Dubai immigration with others and I was only able to disembark near to 9am with all my luggage to visit immigration which did not open till 9am then to locate my transit car to airport. All of this was pointed out previous day but no assistance given, nor any help when I was panicking to ensure I wouldn't miss my flights back home and connections.Reception desk on board was one of the most unreceptive both in assistance and in language that I have ever encountered. The buffet restaurant food was OK but like most, served on cold [plates which means when you find a place, your food is cold.Difficulty in getting a hot plate when asked. The coordination of programmes on board interfering with other programmes was hopeless as were the English announcements made over the tanhoy and during events on board where because of lack of the English language were incomprehensible. This company is not one I would recommend to anyone from UK.I had difficulties, yet I speak French fluently, enough German,Italian,Spanish etc to make myself understood.Pity they could not reciprocate. The best English speakers were the Russians and the Philipinos. I rest my case, never and which is why I tore up my 150 euro gift. Read Less

First problem that costa only sent the e tickets 3 days before the cruise after ringing the tour oppertater daily to this. The restaurants have the same menu each day for breakfast lunch and evening with an ever so slight tweak. There was a hot dog burger area, being a vegetarian i requested a veggie burger and was told that I could have one in the designated restaurant that evening with a charge. The options on the menu were poor. Usually on a cruise a slice of pizza as a snack is usually an option, but not with costa an whole pizzas has to be purchased. A second seating option that I asked to have on numerous occasions but was refused, but do not totally understand why as each stop passengers were embarking and disseminating. The cut off time for the self service restaurant was 9.30, therefore one had to eat before this time , if they felt like it or not usually there is somewhere to have a snack if feeling hungry before bed time. The first seating was 6.45 and second seating was 9.15, usually water is served free of charge , but only bottled water was available with a charge. We came back on board late one night as we had a early morning sailing. Every were was closed, the only cold water station was out if water and glasses. We went to the bar at the back of the ship were the staff were clearing away to be totaly ignored by the staff, a young member of staff was very helpful and provided us with water. Also lipstick was found on a drinking mug on another occasion. The staff were entirely rude and missarsble, the were without a smile or greeting. The entertaimment was flat usually there is something for everyone. There were no port talks, no information on port transfers only what was provided by costa at a higher cost. Whilst in our stateroom, there constant interruptions with tanoy announcements. There was not many places on board to have a quiet time to read, it seemed to be constant noise everywhere. We have been with numerous cruise lines and never had an experience like this.We enjoyed our stops and tended to have a meal off board . The only tv channels available were the news channels all other channels were in different languages and only films available were with a charge. It's our first and last cruise with costa and would not recommend it to anyone . Read Less

This was the worst cruise we have been on! 4hrs to board ship! no tea or coffee in dining room! compulsory gratuities 10euro pp per night!pay for shuttles to town! Never been compulsory on other cruises. No sweet wine with lunch/tea included in package. After 5days English Breakfast Teabags were like gold couldn't find them anywhere. The pushing, shoving yelling by the Italians was unbearable. Music on the back pool area was the same everyday with only 4 English songs played. Our tea seating was 8.45 with 3 lovely couples on our table served by wonderful waiters. The bistro areas were a challenge with people pushing in but the food was ok. The tour organisation was a shambles both waiting to leave and getting back with sometimes 5 buses arriving at the same time to board the ship. Didn't get on till after sailing time. One of our tours has a couple with mobility problems, we had to cut short our walking experience due to their incapability to keep up. They should not have been allowed to do the tour as it was all walking and we believe this person was air lifted for heart problems 4 days prior. Spent unbelievable amount of time in queues at the service desk, given wrong information, wrong name on replacement cabin card couldn't get off ship had to go back and replace it. Had to change cabins for re-positioning cruise, first room was deck above the dance floor absolute hell! music, yelling till 2pm. next room took 3 replacement cards for cabin card to work-had to go to service desk for each card.Cabin staff fantastic. Service desk is position near the piano area which made it almost impossible to hear and communicate with almost non English speaking staff. Our shore experiences made up for the ship experience. It was a terrible cruise. The staff was very rude, the beverage package we chose, Brindiamo, didn't have bottled water and for the night we had to buy bottles of water, even if the water was included in the package. When I went to hospitality desk to ask, I said that in the offer it doesn't say that they are offering us drinks (included water) only in the glass. The receptionist smiled very ironic at me and said: "But it neither say that you have bottled ones". The service charge was mandatory, even if I wasn't satisfied by services and in other cruises that I went the service charge was optional (with MSC, Norwegian). The activities were very boring, compared with others from another cruise lines, in the theater was the same daily show, under another names. The food was poor, based especially on pastas and fish. I ate pastas in those 9 days for my entire life. Pizza was exposed on the dinner buffet, but if you wanted to eat pizza you had to buy it (in other cruise lines it's included). Cocktails were very poor, based on sodas and syrup (every cocktail). No natural juices. The dinner was available untill 9.00 PM. After this hour, you can eat only if you buy at the restaurant (with MSC we ate pizza at 11 PM). The itinerary was not very good organised, we only stayed 3-4 hours in big ports, the rest of the time you'll be bored to death on the sea. Read Less

We chose this trip based on ports selected by YMT. Ports were great---cruise---worst ever. Everything you get on Costa costs you---even water!! Had to buy water pkg for $37. Glass of water at bar costs. Food was horrible---attractive looking in dining room but almost same selections nightly. If you're a pasta lover you might survive. Almost same offerings daily in buffett. No lobster or prime rib meals without additional cost. Had to make special arrangements to have coffee served during dinner. (I guess that's not a Italian thing) You even have to pay for room service. Additional charge of $2.50. That's a first. Nothing is free. Entertainment is very amateur. One show had to leave because it was so dull. Not much to offer during day if onboard. Small casino and poker tables but that is normal for cruise ships. Didn't even offer ice cream. Food not available unless it was meal hours. We traveled with 2 other couples. Had a great time at ports being with friends but will never use Costa again. Restrooms seemed to be closed often. usually after dinner---not available! Really!! Can't this be addressed sooner. Read Less

I just got off a Costa Pacifica cruise for a 11 days from Genoa Italy. First only had two English channels on TV. Second The entertainment was mostly cater to Germans with only ball room dancing. The few other bands where below mediocre to put you to sleep!. The cruise director spoke at the main shows in German catering to her own. The food was mostly for breakfast sweets and rolls. No oat meal, a bad tasting orange juice. Not a great selection of food. Lunch was no coffee. Main entrée was mostly Fish and Pork Chicken was to a minimal. When they announced Latin night music event they literally only played three Latin songs. On the whole cruise and this special event. In my opinion and other I spoke to this Costa cruise caters to Germans and is a racist cruise line. I felt trapped in a room with only two English channels on TV. And when you left the room the entertainment was mostly cater to Germans. I been on 18 cruises. And this was by far the worst ever. Remember English is the dominant language in the world. Your fellow guest where very rude and not nice at all. Shore excursion pamphlet where not in English. They didn't have them when I approached the desk. Read Less

I have read bad reviews about COSTA, but the destinations looked very appealing so I took my chances. Well, I should have listened to those reviews because other than the great port of calls, reasonable price of the cruise and the very entertaining shows by their in house singers and dancers, everything else was bad. There were 14 of us in 7 cabins, and most of us have the same sentiments-never will we take COSTA again! Let me list some of the reasons : 1.Embarkation procedure disorganized, took us 3 hours from arrival at terminal to boarding. And we arrived early ( 11 a.m.). 2.Food low quality & lacked variety , even the specialty restaurant Lobster & Grill ( extra charge of E25 per cover) had bad food - lobster clearly frozen & meat sticking to the shell, Key Lime Pie looked & tasted like the store bought variety. Total waste of money ! 3. Buffet opens only at 7 p.m., frustrating for those who want a quick meal before watching first show at 7:15 p.m. And after 9:30 p.m., there's nowhere to find food . 4. Shore excursions cancelled if not enough people ( this happened twice that I know of with the English ones, could have happened more). 5. Delayed arrival in port, threw a wrench on our tours with private operators. 6.Front desk personnel not very knowledgeable, speak to different people and you get different answers. We wanted to buy their airport transfer upon disembarkation in Amsterdam but no more space- so I asked how much is taxi and the answer was 25E. We took 3 taxis and paid between 70-85 E per taxi, what a nice surprise! 7. Never seen such an unhappy lot of ship personnel, I suspect they are overworked and very underpaid. Confirmed when we spoke with a number of people working there. 8. Cabins were clean, but very warm despite adjusting in the thermostat. 9.Bought a shuttle bus ride with them, trip scheduled for 9:15 a.m. but bus was delayed so we left port at 10 a.m.. And last shuttle back to port was at 12:30 instead of 12:45 so we had very little time for sightseeing. Felt short changed. 10. Pet peeve: shower curtain one inch shorter than it should me resulting in water spraying around. Why can't spend a little money to replace those and save passenger aggravation as well as a lot of work on the cabin cleaners? I usually write a review only when I'm happy with my experience, but this one is to warn others. Unless you're a first time cruiser or you don't mind being stressed, don't take COSTA ! Read Less

The cruise per se was O.K. but did not exceed expectations. After much encouragement from friends, who often go on cruises, we decided to try one out. We wanted a small cruise so we drove to Savona and got on the Costa Fortuna, which is a large boat. Impressed in the beginning we later realized that big size is not an advantage. There were too many people and from all nationalities: orientals, blacks, muslim, etc. The food was average and there was no flexibility as to where we sit for dinner. The personnel was polite but they generally had very poor knowledge of Western languages! The excursions were too expensive so we opted out. The cabin was O.K. but coming back home we found a bedbug, my wife was bitten several times and she is allergic to insect bites. We were alarmed and began house cleaning, boiling sheets, vacuuming everything, etc. and my wife slept in the living-room for ten days. So far neither she nor I have been bitten again, so we hope that the bedbug we killed was the only one we got, and that it was a male! By now we hope that any offsprings should have manifested themselves. I give Costa the worst note possible because when I brought the issue up with them, they dismissed it for lack of proof! We had no bugs like that in our home and we found one bug 3 days after we got back from the cruise. How much more proof can there be? If it weren't for the bedbug, it would have been an "average" type of cruise not to get too excited about. If we ever go again, we will try to save money ahead of time and go for a more expensive (hopefully higher quality) cruise. Read Less

the destination were very nice, however Costa is not one of my favorite cruise lines. As a previous cruiser I have taken cruises from different cruise line, and Costa is actually the one I like the least. I thought Carnival was bad but it doesn't compared to Costa, overall the food was not that great, they force you to go to the dinner at the restaurant which the food there weren't many variety. Being Italian I thought the pizza would be tasty, but it was just bread with bad tomato sauce. For Room Service you have to pay for it. also for the basketball court, ping pong, and miniature golf, basically all the facilities you have to pay. The entrainment was ok if you were Brazilian, the team were more tailor for Brazilians they were constantly speaking Portuguese, sometime they tried to speak in English but they were more shy to speak English. They also were not so interested in other guess that didn't speak Portuguese, this was disappointed. the dancing team were nice, cheerful. The cabin steward was nice, he was very friendly. The style of the cruise wasn't my cup of tea, I thought it was ugly. the Gym was full all the time! I didn't like the many language announcement, I thought it was a bit irritated. I am not sure if is true but I don't think costa leave you if you are not on time. they keep your passport, I didn't dare to try but if this is the case then it will be bad! Read Less
