Was on the CM this last week and had an awesome time! We were due to embark in Venice and flew in the day before and stayed at the best western olimpia in P. Roma. Very beautiful hotel and I highly recommend it. Only one bridge to cross with luggage. The ship didn't dock in Venice the morning we were supposed to embark due to fog. We went early to the terminal to see what we were supposed to do and they put us on a bus to Trieste. Was a nice ride about an hour and a half. All very well managed and I actually really enjoyed the extra time in Trieste since I've never been before. Once on the ship we found our cabin. We booked an interior but were upgraded to a balcony..nice. I'm so glad the reviews on here didn't put me off from going with Costa because it was a really great trip and awesome value. We have spend 3x as much at mediocre resorts so this was really a surprise. So you know where I'm coming from...I'm American and my husband is Italian, I have lived in Italy and France the last 10 years just to give you an idea of my background. I thought the food was great (I wasn't expecting Michelan star fare though) and even my husband who is the worlds biggest food critic (thanks to his mamma) loved it too. Sure it isn't 5 star but it's good. The breakfast buffet isn't your American brunch but I didn't have trouble finding something to eat at all (donuts, croissants, fruits...) if you do want American stuff get room service. I did it one morning just to try and got a huge amount of French toast, pancakes and eggs Benedict for just 5 euro. The best lunch was when the chefs set us a pasta demonstration near the central pool. There was 5-6 different pastas and all were soooo good. I found you do have to look around the different buffets to find different things. I didn't eat breakfast or lunch in the mdr so I can't comment on them. The drink package is defintely worth it even if you don't drink tons of alcohol. I had no problems paying for a few bottles of water here and there for the room, but could easily get glasses of water free with my drink package from any bar or in the mdr. I did not have the USA water thing because I didn't book through the us site. I didn't notice the "lack of personal space" or rude cultural differences everyone always mentions in Costa reviews, but maybe after living here so long I don't notice it. Everyone stayed in the lines and were patient. The staff were awesome! Everyone always smiling and greeting you by name. That was impressive. I do wonder if I had a better time because I speak Italian and French though. I got to know a lot of people and staff because of that. But there were other English only speakers around and seemed to be having a great time too. We also had no problem asking the maitre d to change us to late dinner when we saw we were assigned to the early seating. He also happily changed us to an Italian speaking table (you can request anything language wise or just a table for 2). The gala night was fun and people dressed up in everything from gowns to just nice pants/ dress shirts or even just normal clothes. It was a great time. The only bummer was the club medusa. We paid to eat there one night with our table mates from the mdr and the food was just ok...I actually liked the menu in the mdr a lot more, so I don't recommended it. Everything else was fabulous and we booked our next cruise on the diadema the 3rd day in on this cruise lol. I say you need to try it for yourself..some of the reviews on here sound so crazy after I have actually been on the ship now. Someone said on here people must have hugh and unrealistic expectations to leave such extremely negative reviews. It was my first cruise but not my last with Costa! Read Less

The cruise per se was O.K. but did not exceed expectations. After much encouragement from friends, who often go on cruises, we decided to try one out. We wanted a small cruise so we drove to Savona and got on the Costa Fortuna, which is a large boat. Impressed in the beginning we later realized that big size is not an advantage. There were too many people and from all nationalities: orientals, blacks, muslim, etc. The food was average and there was no flexibility as to where we sit for dinner. The personnel was polite but they generally had very poor knowledge of Western languages! The excursions were too expensive so we opted out. The cabin was O.K. but coming back home we found a bedbug, my wife was bitten several times and she is allergic to insect bites. We were alarmed and began house cleaning, boiling sheets, vacuuming everything, etc. and my wife slept in the living-room for ten days. So far neither she nor I have been bitten again, so we hope that the bedbug we killed was the only one we got, and that it was a male! By now we hope that any offsprings should have manifested themselves. I give Costa the worst note possible because when I brought the issue up with them, they dismissed it for lack of proof! We had no bugs like that in our home and we found one bug 3 days after we got back from the cruise. How much more proof can there be? If it weren't for the bedbug, it would have been an "average" type of cruise not to get too excited about. If we ever go again, we will try to save money ahead of time and go for a more expensive (hopefully higher quality) cruise. Read Less

In an attempt to keep this brief I'll list good and bad points from our first ever cruise. We are a married couple in our 50s. Good: Service Facilities Entertainment variety Cadiz , Valencia and Lisbon Inside Cabin was adequate and I really can't see the argument for upgrading to outside or balcony given the short time we actually spent in the cabin. Steward Uri was excellent Fresh towels and bedding every day Pools Drinks package is a must even though we are not big drinkers Not too many announcements Embarkation and disembarkation were always smooth and well organised to minimise waiting times Variety of food Bad: Excessive charges for shuttle bus at some ports Too little time to explore Barcelona (4 hours) Rude people pushing and shoving at buffet meal time Read Less

This was the first cruise either my wife or I had been on and we were a little concerned about booking this ship after reading some of the reviews, now we have stayed in some wonderful 5 star land based hotels but this ship was brilliant. All the staff were helpful and happy, the ship was always being cleaned, the food was lovely and varied either in the main restaurant of the buffet style. The only gripe I would agree with is yes the main pool area can get very noisy but there are 2 pools to chose from or you can just find a quieter part of the ship, it is big enough. All in all I would recommend this ship to anyone we enjoyed every minute of the cruise and for the first time in a long both of us did not want to go home, we will definitely cruise again and use Costa again. It wasn't what I had heard of and what I had expected. In the pool areas there was no control, and organisation. To go in the spa, you had to wait a long time because the people stayed in there for about an 1 hour, and children would occupy the spa and they weren't allowed to go in. At Palma we paid for the shuttle bus, and because weather they suspended the service and we didn't use it after we had paid for it. We had to get a taxi and we weren't compensated. The day we had to leave the ship we had to leave the room at 8.00a.m but the ship arrived at destination at 1.00p.m and all the people that waited to get off were sleeping in the lounges, because they were getting bored, we couldn't even go in the pools because the company didn't give us beach towels. A very negative experience! Read Less

This was a first time cruise for myself and my family. I was a it dubious of cruising and quite anxious to be truthful. We did encounter a problem when we first went to the airport to check-in as we had no allocation of bags and we had to pay for the 3 pieces of luggage. This was quickly sorted out when we arrived on board ship (it was a problem with KLM and not Costa). Our cabin was an exterior with a porthole, it was a very decent size with plenty of storage space, I've had smaller in hotels! The cabin were cleaned three times a day and were kept spotless. Even though the cruise was fully booked it never felt overly busy. Yes we had a short queue sometimes for the buffet service but it always moved along smoothly. The meals in the New Yor New York restaurant were outstanding and the two waiters at our table were more than helpful, even for my fussy eating 15 year old son. We went on two excursions, one in Lithuania and a two day excursion in St Petersburg. On both the excursion ladies were very knowledgeable of their tour and also added some of their own interesting facts. It was a lot of walking but then again we enjoy this (it also worked off some of the calories that we had consumed). We only went to 5 evening shows in the theatre and 3 of them were the singing an dancing shows and we were all blown away with the standard of the dancers in these shows, with slick quick changes and smiles on their faces they certainly entertained us. My only criticism would be that the shuttle bus should be a free service and that coffee/tea/water should be available all day. Overall though we had a great cruise, lovely weather and the Baltics is such a fascinating area of the world. Read Less

Just got back from our cruise on the diadema first and last time we will cruise with Costa. The ship was way to overcrowded not enough public areas to handle 4000+ passengers. At the buffet we had to wait up to an hour to get food as the were not enough plates for all and then most of the food was cold or undercooked. The two main pools aré way too small to handle all passengers it was like an obstacle course just to get one leg in and inpossible to have a quiet bathe, twice i had two young children land on my head while they were jumping in and out. On the tours we did we were told to be at a dessignated aréa of the ship at 9 o clock so we could get our buses and on both occasions we were still onboard at 11 waiting. We had the all inclusive package yet when we got onboard we had to pay for everything except for a selection of drinks the bufe and main restaurant. The only highlight is the entertaiment team who do all they can do to keep you amussed, and our waiter in the fiorentino restaurant who was brilliant ( lazaro). If you are looking for a quiet hassle free holyday avoid this ship at all cost. Read Less

We found this cruise at a very convenient price but the topics we are reviewing we understand that no matter how much you pay are good to be aware. Positives: Food was good for Italian and Spanish but Americans or British may suffer without a cooked breakfast or egg options. Staff is friendly and attentive what indeed makes it better. The cruise is kept clean and you can see staff cleaning constantly. The entertainment is good and the organizers are respectful when people do not want to participate and the events are family friendly. We have been told that kids only 30 euros what seems really good. Pizza restaurant for dinner was excellent Negatives. We booked a cabin with a window and got and internal one. you will receive millions of emails check them a be sure that it reflects your booking. Embarking was not very good organized but if you arrive early you will no t have much delays. First language is Italian. Even thought they translate you will have to be patient. Some of the girls in costumer service are not very nice to address problems and bring solutions. We needed to use the internet which didn't work well in the business area, we were charged double and have to wait until the cancellation of the overcharged was authorized. ( half day) If you register to use internet be aware 3euro hidden charge. If you buy the all inclusive package as well be careful 36 euros per service surcharge never disclosed. Food in the buffet is good but people do not queue and it is very busy. Probably cultural clash but it can be stressful Adults only pool was full of kids but in the second day they controlled more. First two days almost impossible. If you want to have a chair to lay down it is impossible. Most of Italians put their towels to reserve the space 4 hours prior actual use. The best way I to skip a day in the port and enjoy the quiet Hope this is useful for you and if you are patient and want a good value costa is the way to go but expect places to be busy and mostly check the charges before accepting payment. The itinerary was good and I enjoyed the music and the sit downs dinners. Read Less

My wife and I went on our first cruise with a friend who had arranged it.I had some trepidation after booking (we agreed to the trip and booked it just 3 weeks before sailing), after reading the reviews on CC. With nothing to compare it to, we both had a good time on the boat. Not once did I encounter rude behavior by the staff and apparently some of the issues that others raised I didn't experience. The food was good, but not great.Others wrote that there was no buffet food available if you missed dinner but the buffet was open 5 of the 7 nights we were on board, the exceptions being the two nights the Gala dinner was going on. Our cabin steward, Suresh, was very good, and we weren't lacking for anything we needed. The shows were good, especially the two singers from South Africa who both had good voices that could handle a variety of song styles. Some of the lounge acts were from Cliché City (how many times can you hear "The Girl from Ipanema"?), but the Alterra Disco Bar band had everybody on the dance floor at all times. Now for the Costa Company. My wife is from the Dominican Republic and our friend ,also from the DR, was visiting friends and family in Spain when she saw the Costa Baltics cruise special. We agreed and through email and phone set it up with a Spanish travel agency.I wanted to book some shore excursions and modify the trip, but was unable to because the travel agent booked it on Costa's Spain website, which is only available if you live in Spain! One excursion in St. Petersburg to Catharine the Great's palace was scheduled for Tuesday-except the palace isn't open on Tuesday.A Stockholm city tour included a museum visit which closed 20 minutes after we got there. You can book excursions from your room through your TV, except that two of the ones we wanted were said to be unavailable but our friend got them later in the day at the office (which had a very long line). We are not seasoned cruisers having only been on four cruises - the first three with P&O and the last with Costa. The price we paid for our inside cabin was very reasonable - however it was discounted still further by Iglu cruise because we booked an outside cabin but were allocated an inside. Iglu cruise said this was an error but I strongly suspect that they sell you anything to get your booking and then work out what they can and cannot provide. Not an acceptable business practice in my view - but that is an issue with Iglu Cruise and not (possibly) with Costa. The bad points first. Costas organisational ability in relation to our transfer from Nice Airport to Savona Port was absolutely woeful. No one was there to meet us from our on time flight at 0905 am from Gatwick. After about half an hour of waiting around I noticed a man sticking up "Costa meeting point" signs just outside the terminal building. I spoke with him and he said that I must have spoken with his colleague who was there to meet us as we arrived. I told him that there was no one there to meet us - as all our fellow Costa customers can vouch for. He simply refused to believe me - saying that was not possible and laughing nervously - basically implying that I was making it up. After a further half an hour a coach turned up and a woman from Costa who had just arrived said to us "what can I do - I have four hundred people and just one coach" With the best will in the world - it's not our problem. Costa would have (should have) known well in advance how many transfer customers were arriving at Nice Airport that morning. If they lack the ability to organise enough coaches to cater for that then they really shouldn't be in business. We were lucky - we were at the front of the queue and managed to get on the first coach. However, there was no Costa rep provided on the transfer coach - just our driver Giovanni who spoke no English. He was a good driver but on arrival at Savona port for our embarkation we were greeted by a Costa rep who spoke for five minutes or so in Italian. She apparently had no idea we were all British and so was wasting her time - she just assumed we were Italian. We were then given vague directions about entering the terminal building to board our ship. Now as we could see from the coach where Giovanni had parked, there were two terminal buildings. A smaller one on our left right next to where our ship was docked and a much larger terminal building to our right where another Costa ship (Costa Favolosa) was docked. We all not unnaturally made the assumption that the terminal building to our left next to our ship was the one we wanted. We went there and were turned away by a Security Guard who gave us further unclear instructions about where we needed to go. We thought perhaps there was an entrance on another side of the building that we should be using. We found no other entrance so returned to the same Security Guard and were finally given proper directions and instructions. We had to enter the large terminal building on the opposite side of the dock from where our Ship was docked and we would then make our way to our ship across an upper level walkway that linked the two terminal buildings. Sorry Costa - but how on earth were we supposed to work that out by ourselves without either clear instructions or a member of staff to guide us there - neither of which were provided. Couple that with our pathetic/non existent meet and greet at Nice Airport and I confess I was not in the best of moods and my opinion of Costa Cruises was at a very low level. You only get one chance to make a first impression and Costa - you failed on a biblical scale. After we embarked and got to our cabin - still seething from our dreadful transfer - the first thing we noticed was that it absolutely stank of cigarette smoke. I don't know how it found it's way in there - there are smoke detectors in the cabins. Possibly from the previous occupants smoking in the ensuite which cannot have smoke detectors because the steam from the shower would activate them. Or possibly through the A/C system. I called Guest Services (Reception) and they said they would pass on a request to housekeeping to refresh the room. I asked how long that would take because it was so overpowering. I was just told that it had been passed to housekeeping. That answer was supposed to satisfy me - they had done their job in passing it on - so what more did I expect?!! Anyway, the smell did reduce after a few hours. Another bad point relates to the all inclusive drinks package we purchased at a cost of 28.75 euros per person for the duration of our cruise. Now having spent that amount of money, I don't expect to have to spend extra to buy water. With Costas all-inclusive package you do if you want a bottle to take to bed. You can only have water by the glass. What use is that when you want to drink water in the night. They even had the cheek to leave a bottle of water out of the mini-bar (all mini-bar drinks are extra) with a little tag around it. We made the assumption that because it was left outside the mini-bar it was complimentary. WRONG - we were charged 2.95 euros for it. On closer inspection of the tag around it it said "Dear Guest - we are sure you will appreciate the provision of this bottle of water in your cabin. Please note that should you open it your room account will be charged 2.95 euros" True hospitality!! OK now I've got that off my chest - all that remains is the positive. Firstly the staff. Secondly the staff Thirdly the staff All the front of house staff were exceptional. Happy, relaxed and customer focused. Now our previous cruising experiences have all been with P&O. Their staff are drawn from the same Countries - mainly India, Philippines and Indonesia but with Costa they just seem so much happier and that is reflected in the wonderful service they provide. I'm not saying service is poor on P&O but it is just so much better with Costa. The food. Really good quality cuisine - but for my British palate, P&O definitely has the edge and has more variety of cuisines Read Less
