Staff was kind and helpful, very clean. Cabin and corridors are cleaned daily. Restaurants on 5 and 9 floor was cleaned permanently. We were informed about everything by daily news. Very nice. Information desc was available all time. It was possible to eat 7 am - 10 pm. But in case of trip outside of ship, from 3,30 pm to dinner time, nothing to eat except cakes and bagetas. Nothing for me. Every day was performance in the theatre - very nice. Fittnes was full, pools too. But not unmanageable. Nobody reserved seats around the pools, it was very good. Children in pools for adult were irriterende, nobody did not check them. Sometimes we moor a little bit far from the city but there are possibility of excursions. Bars at open board were very busy, maybe they could be more ones. Very inspirative were the dance courses during a day. We would like to go again. Read Less

Staff is from the Philippines and they could not care less about the customers. They are paid very little money so obviously job is not made properly. We had a baby with us and one time we were asked to leave the dining room since there was no place for us and the baby. Food was great on a few occasions but twice we had to go sleep hungry since the food was inedible. I asked the refund for the service charge but they said it was impossible. The bar is a nightmare! You go for a drink and it may take up to half an hour for a stupid drink which most of the time would be undrinkable. The barman stays playing around behind the bar waiting for time to go by. Hot water for the baby was a fight with them. They said hot water only in the morning. For god's sake I JUST WANTED WATER. We paid the piu gusto.... but you can't have a bottle of water! If you want the bottle its an extra 2.50eur. We paid over 200 each to have unlimited drinks. I can't call it a holiday. Staying home would have been a better option. First and last time with Costa. WELL DONE!! Read Less

1. Cabin had layer of dust on furniture and carpet hadn't been cleaned in ages. It only got a good clean after complaining - only to be bitten by dust mites. Balcony furniture is in very poor shape and needs replacing. Hair dryer was broken and dangerous with parts exposed. 2. Food is mediocre and often recycled ie desserts available in restaurants the night before are recycled for breakfast the morning after or at tea time. No great variety available and tiny portions in the restaurants. Food sometimes was too salty and inedible. 3. Disastrous customer service where excursions are concerned. Although pre booked and confirmed by email by Costa nobody in the excursion office bothered to inform us that the required minimum for a particular excursion had not been reached and therefore it was cancelled. Ended up spending the day on board in Barcelona as no port wifi was available to be able to view alternative arrangements. Was eventually offered an excursion in a completely different language. Hospitality desk wasn't much help only advising me to take the problem up with the excursion office at 16.30 when the ship left Barcelona at 1700! Nobody dared disturb the tour manager to ask for compensation for the lost part of this cruise and on the last day was made to return to the cash office twice after 45 minutes as tour manager was not available before 7.30am. Local Malta agent SMS-Mondial totally unhelpful with tour leader's phone switched off and unavailable. Subsequent emails were ignored. English speaking rep Gemma promised to speak to tour manager to ask for compensation but studiously avoided me for rest of the cruise not even bothering to give any feedback on the problem. Was more interested in her British clients and my booking an alternative excursion for Marseille which had also been confirmed by Costa by email and subsequently cancelled without notice. Eventually charged me an extra €15 over and above the published price which I took to be Gemma's commission as she asked for the booking to be put on her account! Only got refunded this amount after much toing and froing and much hassle just before disembarking from ship on final day. Gemma also advised me 'to move on and forget about it and relax and enjoy the cruise'..... after it had been completely ruined by Costa themselves! 4. Dance floor was full of infants and toddlers and one had to be careful they were not trodden upon as parents were too busy enjoying themselves to look after their offspring. Absolutely no control over children who ran up and down corridors screaming and shouting. 5. Just before disembarking from ship on the Sunday I was bitten by what seemed to be a flea in the Cheri lounge on deck 5. Had to resort to medical care to get it seen to as the bites were on my right hand and wrist and finger and also on my abdomen and upper left arm. Bites on my wrist became infected. 6. Water is not available during dinner and one is obliged to buy a drinks package for plain water worth €36. If this is ordered by one person in the cabin and there are 2 people in the same cabin they have to be together as the package bought only shows on the cabin card of the person who placed the order. It cannot be split over two cabin cards which is ridiculous seeing as two friends travelling together are not always together all of the time whilst on board. 7. It took 3 days for a table with a decent view to be given to us. One evening we were seated at a table laid for 11 people when it could only hold 8 people comfortably. To add insult to injury we 6 were made to sit facing 5 empty seats whilst trying to eat all squashed up as the maitre d' absolutely refused to re set the table even though we explained that 3 people had left to go to the buffet and therefore there would be more space. Our view was of oxygen tanks and lifeboats on deck 4 in the Otto e Mezzo restaurant and we eventually got a table with a view after vociferously complaining to the local agent. 8. The 'entertainment' in the theatre wasn't much to write home about and was flat. The only enjoyable night was the concert by the male tenor. The rest is not worth mentioning. 9. The peace and quiet in the library was often disturbed by people chatting and discussing their receipts and it was only by shushing them that one got some quiet time to read. Plenty of other places to discuss financial problems but for some reason people would congregate in the library. Even the cruise advisor was in the library when they should have had a desk near the reception downstairs to discuss and advise clients. 10. Avoid the Samsara spa at all costs. I booked a taster session which promised 15 minutes each of a variety of services but ended up being given a most uncomfortable body scrub on curved mosaic couches. I wasn't even laid flat but made to bend forward over my knees whilst the beautician scrubbed my back whilst talking 15 to the dozen. The facial was just a quick wipe with 2 cotton pads and a mask plastered on and left on my skin. She didn't even bother to clean it off but sent me into the jacuzzi totally covered in oil and salt and my face mask and told me it was ok to rinse it off in the jacuzzi! She even.made me help her rub the salt/oil mixture on my legs! So much for being pampered. She then tried to sell me another treatment for €110 plus some toiletries which I refused thereby losing all interest in me. 11. The waiting staff was unhelpful and rude in the Otto e Mezzo deck 4 restaurant refusing to help when we had a seating problem and thumping down plates in front of us. We were made to feel very unwelcome and it was only after our table was changed that the situation improved. 12. The excursion staff seem to suffer from a 'take it or leave it' attitude as well as dementia as when I complained about why I was not informed that the excursion had been cancelled I was told that a note had been left in the post box outside our cabin. When I informed them no such paper had ever been placed there all I got was a shrug of the shoulders. Not even an apology or offer of compensation. Nothing at all. 13. The entire ship needs a thorough clean. The windows were filthy, streaked with dirt and difficult to see through. Even the balcony cabin glass was dirty. My advice is to totally avoud booking with Costa cruises as since their Concordia disaster the quality and service have drastically gone downhill. Read Less

We wanted a break in mid April.. . . . . . it turned out to be very disappointing. 1. All jacuzzis were always full of people with no control of time limits so we stayed out. 2. Very young children (some with dummies) were uncontrolled, both on the dance floor and at the evening meal. No problem with children playing at the right time and place.. 3. The evening's theater music reverberated in the theater, your ears and at close cabins. 4. A solely Staff Drill was announced in a blurring volume inside our cabin. What for? 5. Hospitality staff told us to go ashore to find out info regarding the next port of call!. 6. Hospitality staff never answered the telephone whenever we needed them and queuing at their desk took at least 20 minutes to get serviced. 7. Coffee after dinner is taboo. You have to go to a bar and buy it. 8. Shows were about acceptable, and the illusionist performed some acts in darkness! 9 I was taken aback when I found that while meals were included, plain water was not. The above points were raised with the Costa local agents. They were grateful for raising these shortcomings and promised to look into the points raised for future passengers, but no refund of any sort was forthcoming. Our compensation was therefore their gratitude for raising the matter!. I am not rushing to book another cruise with Costa. Read Less

The ship is of course not new. We booked on April/2017 (two adults and a child) a balcony cabin. The check in was very smooth since we embark from Malta and very few people embark from there. The total price was very cheap and we sailed 3 years ago with Costa Mediterranea and we liked it. But Costa Cruises have changed everything since then. There is no free coffee 24hrs only in the morning and one hour in the afternoon. Other hours you have to pay. No free sunday anymore for the kid. Again you have to pay each scoop. No free pizza (are you serious? we are in an italian ship). The breakfast was awful. No eggs on the eleven floor only on the 3rd floor which you had to wait for a table. The cabin was ok but nothing else. It was overcrawded and you had to wait for the buffet and then if you are lucky you could find a table to sit. No smoking to the casino and service at the bars was awful. We are really dissapointed with Costa. I even mentioned it to a ship manager and his answer was: "Well you pay less than other cruise ships you must expect less" Yeah sure I paid less but with all extras (coffee, pizza, ice-cream, not finding a table, not good entertainment etc) at the end of the cruise it cost us more. So trust me Costa Cruises is out of our list from now on. We cruised with MSC and Carnival until now and Carnival Vista was the best cruise. We almost cry when our cruise was over. Read Less

Most of the costa cruises depart from Savona port, northern italy, so if you fly to milan, you get a nice 2 hr scenic coach ride to port, with great shots of the alps, and fab views through hills and tunnels. Always go all inclusive, Costa probably do the best deal, approx 20 to 30 euros per person per day, and its WORTH IT! Compared to other cruise lines that want $70 PPPD! How exactly does one get value from that?? Inside cabin is small, but you only really use it to sleep! If you are the kind, stuff your face and drink yourself silly, tons of bars and restaurants on board, and when half the people disappear when moored up, you can take full advantage of a near empty ship. Try the jacuzzis on the top decks, which, on the 14th floor, will give you great views over wherever you are! Goes well with cold complimentary champagne (All Inc) Bugger is, you have to pay tips, usually at least 10 euro per person per day. The room staff are friendly and hard working, but surely the cruise line should simply pay them more? Read Less

We have not taken a cruise holiday for several years, with a few weeks notice, we booked a cruise with Costa. This was our first time with this line, however we have used Celebrity, Carnival and Princess Cruises in the past. We arrived by car to Barcelona port, upon arrival, was all a bit confusing on where to go, park, etc. One of Costa officials said, you can park in WTC, show your paperwork to team at the Costa Shuttle bus. So dropped kids off, parked as directed, went to bus and showed paperwork. They said you have to check in first, from whence i just had been sent. After several minutes of pleading, staff said no access to bus....had to walk several miles to terminal in afternoon sun, with some bags. Raised issue at terminal staff, they said tell staff on boat, mentioning they walk sometime...seemed pretty uninterested. Went to reception, who also did not care. Terrible first impression. The positives, ship is clean and well maintained, food good standard but heavily influenced by primary market, so lots of pasta etc. Cabin was good for family, some of shows were high quality. Negatives - Customer service very poor, technology very poor ( on demand movies kept crashing 20 minutes into film, this happened three times), meter on internet usage into overdrive, view few web pages 100mb...cost a fortune in end..guest services calls...often waiting 15 minutes for answer, when you go to desk...staff seem unable to take any ownership of your problems. Very little info and organisation very unclear for trips, timings, etc. We will not be cruising with Costa again. Read Less

Bought the cruise to celebrate my wife's pregnancy . Make the mistake of booking online. They said some beverages are included. well only water was included. Besides that the cruise is designed solely for italians.. all the activities around the pool are done only in italian and you are always lost in what is happening. besides that the waiters are REALLY IMPOLITE.. excedenly RUDE.. the only people that really kind pf take care of you are the ones at the hospitality desk in the third floor and the cabin maids.. Besides the cruise is for italians mainly.. Truly not recommended for american or other nationalities ..And the worse part is that when you try to talk to the leaders of the cruise the just look at you funny and do no try to do anything about it. It goes to great places but they need a lot of improvement in their entertaining department ( better english and spanish) and much more with their waiters .. very rude and impolite!! NEVER AGAIN IN A COSTA CRUISE!!! Also You Need to watch your final bill. They charge ten dóllars per day for hotel service which is something You Pay in the stated as tíos. My wife and myself chose this cruise as the date, price, and departure point fitted in with the rest of our holiday plan. We read the reviews before travelling and went with great trepidation as it seemed that our cruise was going to be awful! IT WAS EXCELLENT!!! Embarkation was fine - we arrived in our inside cabin to find that it was bigger than anything we had experienced on the "high level" cruise lines. Our first meal was in the buffet - lots of choice and high quality (but the queuing was "difficult" as the other guests had not yet learned the concept of queuing - we were able to improve their manners as the week progressed and also became proficient at showing them that they should wait until we left the lift before they barged in!). The seat we were allocated in the main restaurant was fine - a whole table of people who could speak English - from Arran, Brechin, Lancashire and Yorkshire. Some left as the cruise progressed and we were joined by people from New Zealand, Israel and USA. Food was good - we had heard of small portions - yes they were small, but there were 6 or 7 courses each night giving a taste of the local cuisine in the area we were cruising. Waiting staff were excellent and soon realised that we were on a drinks package and kept it flowing! Breakfast and lunch at the various buffets was excellent as well - but a good idea to find a seat before getting your food as they were always busy. A bugbear of mine was the way many people filled their plates to overflowing and then only ate half the food. At ports embarkation and returning was easy - we tend not to do the cruise excursions as they tend to be expensive and rushed. No problem getting buses or taxis as required. Entertainment was fine the acrobats were amazing and we were surprised to find that in the musical show we went to more than half was in English! It is an Italian ship, yet critics complain that it is full of Italians - are they surprised by this! Italians are Italians - they are different from British and there are lots of different Italians .... i suspect that some British people are different from others. I was unfortunate to become ill on board and had to attend the ships doctor during the night and then was transferred to a clinic in Naples. The service from the medical staff on board, the clinic in Naples, and the ships hospitality girl who went to the clinic with us was impeccable - they couldn't do enough to help - including the rush to get back on board the ship for the port departure. All in all the experience was excellent and we would not hesitate to cruise with Costa again. To those who seem to be continuing the poor reviews - please be more realistic and honest - one small problem doesn't need to turn into your personal disaster (unless you want it to ! !!! ) Read Less

I have to write a review because I believe that there are so many bad reviews on this ship that I have to chime in. Our cruise was very nice with the highlights being the immaculate condition of the ship, the excellent food, and the very friendly behavior of the staff. Of course there is going to be congestion on a ship with 3000 people and yes many if not most of them are Italian. We enjoyed the stops and will say the Naples stop was far too short seeing as Pompeii is a must see and took every second of our port time and we would really have liked several hours more. The entertainment on board was nice but wish they had at least one show during the day while on our day at sea. We have been on two Royal Caribbean cruises and I would say that Costa is right in line with them. Costa is not perfect but we had a great trip overall and appreciated the food and kind service we were given. Read Less

My Costa Cruise experience My husband and I are celebrating out 10th wedding anniversary. We chose a Costa cruise through the Mediterranean to celebrate. From the onset of this cruise it has been disappointment after disappointment. The service, the food, the petty costs (service fee abound) and the never ending sales pitches to sell more and more all contribute to that disappointment. Not once did anyone ask or hint at our celebration. Even though I filled out the online check in questionnaire and gave that information. We boarded in Barcelona. The airline, Air France lost our luggage. Not Costa's fault but their handling after gave us an indication of the lack of service to be expected. The airline got our baggage to the ship before sailing, however, Costa personnel did not get the word or coordinate the quick processing of our luggage to us. At about 2030 hours, We received a note advising us to notify reception about our luggage. Of coarse we made our way to reception amazed it had really arrived. We were told the luggage had arrived to the port but the ship already left so we will get it the next day in Valencia. Couldn't that be written on the note? Why make us come all the way to the desk, wait in the never ending line and then be told sorry it's at the dock but not on the ship. Then, several hours later, to our amazement we were woken up by a call at 2330 hours informing us our luggage had made it onto the ship after all and we could come once again to reception get it. REALLY???? The bags couldn't be delivered to us? I insisted they be delivered and they were. Thank you for that ounce of forced hospitality. I'm waiting for the service fee. The direction as to services and explanation of the ship is very limited. We walked on the ship and there was NO ONE to help us find our way. We were on our own. This is a cruises right? I paid money to be here and I am on vacation. I'm confused. Because it felt like military service. Every man for himsellf. So we make our way to the room, still encouraged and excited for our vacation to begin and be memory filled. Our room is spacious with a king sized bed. Every day items often found in a hotel room are sparse. We have one bottle of water, which a note advises will cost 2.95 if we consume it. We have one small bar of soap and liquid shower gel which also Is the hair shampoo and towels ( 2 hand towels and two bath towels) THATS IT!!! A book with room service directions and a slip of paper with bar items are on the counter. On the slip of paper lists drinks to order, including soda, water etc. One of the items listed is 6 sodas for 2.95. WOW sounds good, oh no too good to be true. I called room service which typically takes 10 or more minutes to answer, and asked for the soda. No it's 2.95 per soda. REALLY? Since I purchased a drink package (at 29 euros per day, 400 total for both of us) I could get unlimited drinks at the bar and restaurants but not in my room, not even water. So I go to the bar and ask for a bottle of water, no sorry I can only give you a glass of water. I want a bottle of water for my room, sorry can't do it. I guess when I want water, I go to the bar ask for a glass and carry it back to my room. What if I need two, three for the entire night? In between the shower over flowing and flooding the bathroom and the smoke smell in our room, I tried to purchase aspirin. No aspirins in the sundry store of course, that would be too easy. The clerk in the store told me I could get it at the pharmacy, but advised me to check in with hospitality first. Hospitality tells me NO sorry there is no pharmacy you have to go see the doctor (at a cost of 62 euros) before you can buy aspirin!!!!! My husband has allergies and his allergies were irritated by the smoke smells in the room. This persisted throughout the cruise. It felt as if someone was smoking in their room and the smoke was permeating through the vent system. One morning I could smell a cigar, the next I could smell just cigarette smoke. My husband developed a sore throat and congestion to the point he could not function and needed to rest due to the allergies. Needless to say this really caused a damper for our good time. On our sea day I booked a couples massage. We received a "special" announcement that was for a one day thermal pass for 70 euro. No massage included but you could visit the sauna rooms, the jacuzzi and quiet lounge rooms at the spa all day if you chose. But for the 70 euros you can't have a robe, just towels. The robes are for guests that pay for the week long thermal pass. Of course a robe would be way too much to expect! The massage was another 110 euros each. Ok.. Kind of expensive but we are on vacation right? I booked it. At the massage, the technician asked for an in depth medical history and gave a lengthy explanation of services, which seemed to cut into my massage time quit a bit. Finally the massage begins and the technician asks if I want hot stones, yes of course. Later I find out that is 30 euros more!!! 60 for two! Couldn't that have been explained in the lengthy introduction session? After the message the technician is selling products she is sure I need adding up to 250 more! My husband had his own sales pitch of products and more message treatments for an additional 150 euros. I felt played and manipulated! I said no thank you but she continued to try and sell me. On our way out I was informed our total was 140 euro each for one massage that lasted maybe 50 minutes, but advertised as 75 minutes. The technician told me she advised me of the extra cost at the time, I contested but of coarse she won. They have my card or maybe it's their credit card temporarily! Our next hurdle were the excursions. Our tickets were not delivered and we had no direction as to where to meet or times. We figured it out, thank God for our Amazing Race mind set! Our second excursion in Myorca was cancelled due to weather but we were able to take a shuttle to the port for 10 euros each. Oh yes I cannot forget the 18 euro per day hotel service fee, which when I asked was for general services we receive on the ship. Really, what exactly does the cruise fee pay for? I'm getting such fantastic service I can easily feel good about paying even more!!! This is probably the biggest disappointment overall that I have. Not only do I feel I have been nickel and dimmed for every petty expense and charged extra even for water but the staff is not really very friendly or nice! The food is ok and generally always slightly warm. On several dinners the food choices were good and the food very tasty. However, the table server is not plugged in and cannot care less about the people he is serving. On a cruise, my past experience has been the wait staff gets to know the guests by being friendly and being involved. This server is none of those things. He is only concerned with getting the order and bringing the food. Once at dinner, I asked to order a drink before dinner and our server ignored me. My feeling is the waiter simply does not have time to engage since he has too many tables to wait on. I could see the pebbles of sweat on his brow as he tried to rush to serve everyone. The slotted 2 hours is not enough time for dinner. Each night I found we were rushed out for the later dinner service. This wouldn't be a problem if their was a quiet place to converse if that's what you wanted. There is literally no quiet place on this ship other than dinner, your room or the library. It is so packed with people, loud music I felt anxious to get off the ship for some tranquility and peace. The staff was not visibly friendly or even showed a smile. On several occasions I asked a question and received a forced answer from a unconcerned unemotional person. A couple of times the staff person was short and appeared irritated. At no time during this cruise did a staff person go over and above to help me or try and make my experience extra special. Often when I walked the deck a staff person did not even look at me or say hello. This was a routine experience. I paid almost 29 euros per day for drinks as did my husband. Our bill reflected a 409.27 total charge. 53.38 of service fees. Each time I went to the bar to order a drink I was told I couldn't have the drink I wanted because it wasn't on my package. It was on the package and I had to show the bar staff proof. Out of frustration I decided I would order a simpler drink just so I wouldn't have the stress. I ordered two rum and cokes. I asked for one to be with Diet Coke. The bartender gave me two sodas no rum. I asked for the rum and he poured rum in a third glass and gave it to me to mix myself. This happened on May 14 at the pool bar. Maybe there is video surveillance of the transaction. He was clearly annoyed with me and did not think to apologize for his mistake but instead got upset with me. I'm sorry for wanting a drink after spending 200 dollars for a drink package. The announcements on board were in Italian and English, however I could not really understand the English version. This was true for the gala night extravaganza as well. The lady with the microphone spoke very fast and loud making her voice muffled under the loud speaker. Very hard to understand combined with her heavy Italian accent. I got every fourth word. I guess they were introducing the staff, not sure. Our excursion in Valencia was good, our tour guild was knowledgable and fun. His explanations seemed to be very long in Italian and quit a bit shorter in English. Not sure we got the entire explanation or not. It rained heavily the day we toured Valencia, which made the tour hard. I would liked the guild to think about spending more time on inside locations but this was almost entirely outside. We did not go into any of the historical sites on the tour. We only walked by. We visited a market that was very interesting and fun but we only stayed 15 minutes. All and all I would give this excursion a 5 out of 10. The Albuferra portion was ok, not super interesting or worth all the travel. More time in Valencia market would have been great. Also we ate lunch st 1430 which is late for us. Nacho explained this was normal lunch time for him. Several people asked him when lunch was but he pressed on for the tour essentially ignoring repeats to stop for lunch. Our Mallorca excursion was cancelled, but we never received a notice. We didn't even have our tickets yet so we didn't know times or any information. Information sharing and direction was a problem on this ship. After finding our room, we expected the customary safety drill. Did not happen. Later the next day we received a notice advising we failed to attend the drill. WHAT DRILL? The note advised us to read the back of the door for safety tips and watch the video. No direction as to where to watch this video but we assumed on the tv in the room. No no no, it's not there or at least we couldn't find it. We still don't know where to watch the video. Internet access? We purchased two packages, one for me and one for my husband at 25 euros each. The package gives us 250mg each to use. After three days of use without logging off our usage was used. We learned later we needed to log out each time so the usage would not be consumed. How can you use internet data when you are not on the Internet? I spoke to a staff member about this and other issued and she told me she was sorry but it is explained in the brochure and I needed to read it. We obtained the Internet service via the device online not on a brochure. There was no mention of logging off each time. Later in the cruise I purchased another 25 dollars worth of service. At 211 MB the service stopped and would not allow me on the Internet. Go to hospitality for answers. have visited this desk so many times I feel I should be bringing gifts, I know these clerks way too well. They, however do not show any affiliation toward seeing me! Apparently our Palermo excursion was cancelled, no one notified us or gave us a chance to join another excursion. Currently I am sitting waiting for the tour office to open at 0900. The same time the ship arrives at the port. This is what I like to do on vacation, wait for service. I sure hope the excursion is not at 9am. When the tour office opened she told me I could join another excursion. How could I do that they began when the tour office opened? The clerk concealed my point. As I walked on deck this morning, hoping to see views of Palermo, the deck, tables and chairs were wet. I asked a maintenance person for a towel to dry the chair I wanted to sit and drink my coffee at. He was confused but did ask another attendant for a towel. This guy was even more confused. There seemed to be a language barrier but they figured out what I needed. Finally a man in a naval uniform came to us and told me I could go get a napkin and dry it myself. REALLY? I'm feeling very special on this cruise!!!! May 12. At the Topkapi bar, Gabriel served us when I asked for a Crown and diet. Immediately he looked at my card and said no it's not covered, when in fact it was. This is the third time Gabriel has given me a hard time with ordering drinks. Gabriel asked an associate and he too said no it wasn't covered. I had to show them on the menu where it was covered. I will never book a cruise on Costa Cruise Line again and I will at every opportunity give a poor review when asked my thoughts about this cruise. I booked this. Raise through Marriott and you can be sure I will send this review to them. Read Less

We have been on about 5 cruises before this one and i can honestly say that this was WORSE then any other. Food was absolutely disgusting (when you could get it) the ship itself is beautiful but the organisation on board is none existent breakfast is basic, lunch is basic "both the same by the way", evening meal you could have fitted all 4 courses on a small side plate. we paid 28 euros each to eat in one of the speciality restaurants absolute waste of money the food is just as crap as the rest of the ship we had prawns as part of the first course they were RAW we complained but it was a waste of time just offered us a glass of the cheapest champagne which was undrinkable. Drinks were expensive every thing you buy has 15% added on, they don't charge a "service" charge which is not compulsory they now charge you 8.5 euros per person per day and call it a hotel charge which they can make compulsory. Entertainment after the first night was mind numbingly boring same crap over and over. It appears Costa cruises is mainly for Italians, germans and basically oneone apart from the English. I must in conclusion say that the waitresses/waiters were brilliant Please take notice if you want a decent cruise holiday then DO NOT GO ON COSTA its fairly cheap but you DON'T get value. Read Less

It was my second cruise and the first mediterranean one, and the first one with Costa. I was very, very worried when I have read the reviews, but then I have decided to give Costa and Costa Fascinosa an honest review from my perspective. We have arrived to the port at 11:00. The baggage drop was polite, efficient and with a minimal queue. Then we have waited for quite a long while for the check-in, and there were two minor problems: pens for filling in the health questions were not distributed, and only two ladies were checking in - and the queue was moving very slowly. Then we have embarked and there was no more queues. We have been invited to a room where the safety video was played... but we had to wait for absolute ages and it was rather frustrating, as we were not offered a drink or a chance to buy one. The buffet was served and we were let into the cabins at 13:00. The safety drill was very minimal in comparison to Princess cruise I've previously been to. We had an inside cabin. It was spacious and comfortable. Someone mentioned the finger-breaking door handles. I usually don't complain about such things, but they were ridiculous. The bathroom was perfectly nice as well. Our room was kept in good order all the week. Food and drinks: we had the 'Extra' All inclusive. The illy coffee was excellent, and the cocktails and wines were really nice. The food was EXCELLENT in the restaurant. I absolutely loved almost every dish I have tried, I liked the variety and taste, and the mirroring of the regions of Italy we have sailed nearby was an absolutely amazing touch! The desserts were maybe not that excellent as the mains and starters, but being a foodie I have been really happy. The portions were small and i have loved it, as it allowed me to have a proper four course meal. In the buffet the food was ok, but the variety was rather limited (but everything was fresh and tasty!). Our waitress was the most polite, friendly, lovely and charming waitress I have ever been served by! However, getting someone to serve you a drink at breakfast was an absolute nightmare, and the restaurant service at the Otto e Mezzo restaurant during breakfast on the disembarkation day was dreadful. The ship decor was glitzy and a bit dated to be honest, but it had some Italian charm. The entertainment was really poor. The dancing to the live music was ok, the shows were awful (except for the acrobatic show and the illusionist). The jazz pianists were ok (one of two was very good!). The other things, like the miss costa fashions pageant was dreadful. I hoped for a good set of enrichment activities and there was next to nothing. The excursions were well organised and I thought they were an ok value. The worst thing were the other customers: loud and extremely rude, hogging the sunbeds from early mornings, disrespecting any queues in the buffet, pushing and screaming, I have been rather shocked. I guess it is not exactly Costa's fault, but it made the cruise difficult at times. Read Less

The absolute worst experience of my life. Took my mam on this cruise to give her a holiday of a life time and possibly her last holiday, due to ill health. Been on four other cruise liners and loved every minute. Waiters and staff were the most miserable unhappy unfriendly people, half of them couldn't understand what you were saying unless you were Italian. Rude, noisy, and abrupt; the staff were not interested in you. I complained from day one to the hospitality staff, and the hospitality manager till the day I left . An apology and a bottle of wine was the only compensation they found suitable for my experience . Food was cold, you sat in the breakfast room next to the galleys, listening to waiters banging crockery and scraping waste from plates in your full view . We joined the ship in Palma, no refreshment drinks , left to our own devices to embark. No passenger assistance for my mam. No welcome or help to our rooms. Basically find your room yourself . Yet the next day there were passengers embarking from Barcelona, they had a full on festival welcome on board . You constantly had to ask for tea, milk, hot water. Breakfast was a nightmare, anything but relaxing. Fine if you were Italian and drank coffee. It was like a hop off, hop on ship, embarking and disembarking constantly in every port we stopped at. Lifts were not operating due to cases been put on each floor and emergency drills. No afternoon tea due to emergency drills everyday with the embarking . Felt I stood in a queue at hospitality desk most of my holiday. Absolute joke.... It was like a zoo. Anything but relaxing . In fact animals are better behaved than the passengers . Money grabbing company. Making you pay for shuttle buses to take you out the port. No hot drinks after breakfast ! Screaming kids in the adult pool only area. Waiters stomping around in bad moods throwing things down . The only time I was happy was when I went off the ship in the ports . Very very unprofessional in every way. Toilets on two floors disgusting wouldn't flush . Charges on my account for mini bar, mam never used . Read Less

I have been on several cruises, from multiple companies and this is by far the worst one I have ever been on. We disembarked a day early and thankfully we did because 6 days was long enough! The ship isn't that nice, though it's relatively new it already feels dated. The staff were miserable and not nice but I don't blame them because they work such long hard days and get yelled at all day by pushy, trashy customers. The dining options were limited. The buffet was open at terrible hours as was the breakfast. Customers in the dining halls were pushy, rude and didn't know how to wait their turn for anything!! The common areas were overcrowded and the amount of smoking was horrendous! The customers didn't adhere to the guidelines regarding smoking and the halls, elevators and even our room reeked like smoke! Disembarking at the ports was a nightmare. Again, everyone was pushing and shoving to get off. It was SUPER disorganized. Once on the port, we had to pay to take buses, organized through the cruise which was poorly communicated and very expensive. Everything on this cruise was poorly communicated. We had no idea what was going on half the time, it didn't hel that most of the announcements were only in Italian!!! The day we disembarked we were given ZERO information about the process. We had to stand in line at the information desk just to find out how to disembark! Like I said I've cruised with many other companies and have never had this disorganization issue. The entertainment is awful and again only catered to Italians. The food in general was subpar. All in all, this cruise was royally awful. Don't bother booking unless you're Italian. But even if I was Italian, I would save my money and book elsewhere! I basically hated every minute of this cruise. Read Less

We had a beautiful cabin- but with finger breaking hooks to open drawers. The ship is 2 years old- ample time for management to correct this simple-to-fix defect. The cuisine was bad, even by Costa standards. We had table 385 in the Gattopardo restaurant. Excellent waiter, a menu set out by its Chef which was sheer poetry. Only the food did not match it. Except for the standard tagliatelle bolognesi , potato puree, and ice cream, almost everything else was substandard. Why employ a real chef when any dishhand would do? Breakfast at that restaurant was absolutely chaotic. Waiters galore floating around doing nothing and trying to justify their presence. One had to block one to place an order. Chaos at its best. No coffe could be had with desert at restaurant tables, coffee being the preserve of the bars. And the self service restaurant obliged by closing its coffee machines throughout the day except for breakfast to herd the passengers to the bars to be charged for it. The port shuttles were not free but an expensive extra. And to make things worst one was forced to buy tickets beforehand and not when boarding the buses. To summarize : the management is not customer orientated or could not care less. So why does Costa put up with it? Read Less

Firstly the ship is huge and it took nearly a week to navigate our way around it.There were a lot of good things ans some not so good. With size you get variety but you also get crowds, there were certain times of the day particularly between evening meal sittings when this could be overwhelming and also at times in the vast buffet restaurant. At the formal evening restaurant the food was quite good and the waiters friendly but they were always waiting for meals to arrive from the kitchens meaning that our table of 6 were rarely served together. At the buffet restaurant i found the waste of food appalling. This restaurant served food virtually from 7am to 17.00 and you would see people piling up plates and just wasting 3/4 of it obviously they were to lazy to get up off their backsides and make a second visit. They would probably say that they have paid for it but then so have i and every other considerate passenger who was paying for their waste. In the evening there was the choice of about 5 places where you could listen to live music the best of which was the piano player in the piano bar and the 2 guys who played acoustic guitars in the chocolate bar. The rest of the music was to middle of the road for my taste. The main theatre had 2 great shows a pair of acrobats and a musician the other evenings were just mundane. The ship was spotlessly clean and our cabin guy always had a smile on his face. My biggest gripe was that being an English speaker i was cheesed off that 3 of the 4 English speaking tours i had booked were cancelled due to lack of bookings. Finally I would like to recommend the all inclusive package which was a bargain. Read Less

I have cruised on many different cruise lines since my first cruise back in 1996, including 5 star and budget ships. This is my first time on Costa although I have sailed on their sister company Carnival and many things about the management and layout of the ships is similar. Check in at Barcelona was very efficient as Costa pick up and drop off at all the ports on their itinerary so you don't get the long queues and congestion often associated with the single port of departure style of cruise. This was probably the most positive experience of this cruise. The ship itself is relatively new and was well kept and clean. The second cabin was a premium inside cabin and again was clean well set out and spacious. The only minor gripe about the cabin was shower curtains - why oh why can't they use doors like other cruise lines. Daytime activities were poor - but as it was a packed itinerary with only one day at sea that was not an issue. Evening entertainment was better and the shows were good overall for a multilingual audience - and much as I dislike illusionists - the illusionist on this ship was the best I have seen at sea. The singers and dancers could all sing and dance well but the shows didn't convey any emotion - something that Costa could learn from their sister company Carnival. Port and shore excursions were overpriced - but the three that we used were very good if poor value for money - this was quite a late booking so we had little choice but to use the ships tours - although had we waited much better value was available at each port for very similar tours. The cabins were of a good size - the balcony furniture was basic but ok for an early breakfast or late drink. Dining - generally, one of the highlights of any cruise was a big disappointment with menus being of poor quality and no ice water provided - rather you had to pay for a bottle of water (750ml for €3.50) which I find objectionable. This is the first cruise I have been on that the self service restaurants are not open of an evening and there is no tea, coffee, juice or water available unless purchased from the bars or restaurant. This resulted in us using room service for coffee and juice (water was NOT available) each evening. I purchased 24 bottles of water in the first port at 15 cents a bottle for spring water which in better quality bottles than were used on board. The range of breakfast foods was good but it was jam packed and Costa customers don't seem to know what queues are for. On a personal hygiene basis there was no one asking people to use the Purell provided at the entrances to the restaurants (unlike RCCL and Celebrity) and as a result very few people made use of it - as an aside based on the number of people who left the toilets without washing their hands this is a big mistake and it is only a matter of time before an outbreak of illness will occur. Ships crew - Leadership comes from the top and there was no friendly banter between passengers and crew except perhaps in the casino and at dinner. But the waiters and cabin staff seemed minimal compared to other cruise lines and didn't attempt to engage in conversation or smile much. Perhaps the move to hotel charge rather than gratuities is responsible for this. The Captain made few announcements and never attempted to interact with the staff. On the two occasions we needed assistance from reception staff - they were arrogant to the point of rudeness. Carnival and Costa could learn a lot from Royal Caribbean in this respect. Disembarkation was uneventful Overall, there was so much penny pinching on this cruise that it spoiled the core experience - the one aspect that frustrated the most was the lack of free iced water and an alternative buffet style venue to the main restaurant. Costa Cruise prices are similar to the competition but the hidden extras and lack of amenities mean that I would never cruise with them again. Read Less

Drill prior to sailing was poorly demonstrated. Everyone stood around at their muster station which was on deck. For those passengers who have never sailed before, there was much confusion as to how to put their life jackets on, etc. The explanations in the event of an emergency were very poorly explained. We are talking from experience as to how it is done on other ships. Our waiters in dining room were unfriendly and had no idea how to serve the dishes. You do not pass a hot dish over a child's head. It was only after we spoke to the Head waiter that this was corrected. Cutlery in between courses were not changed. The waiter takes your cutlery off the plate and puts it on the table! The food was invariably cold. If we returned a dish, a replacement was hardly offered. When ordering soft drinks, the glass was only half full. We brought this to the attention of our waiter more than once and he told us to complain to the Head Waiter. One is paying for a full glass, not a half. On a positive note I would like to commend Costa for their fantastic assistance to us and our family in helping us celebrate our Passover Seder night on board. They went out of their way to assist us and were truly interested. We had the honor of the Executive chef joining us together with the Matre D We had the best cabin steward we have ever had in all of our several cruises. He was so efficient, in his quiet and friendly manner, he did a superb job. We hope that our recommendation to his supervisors will help him get a promotion. He so deserves it. The cabins were comfortable, beds were excellent although the bunk beds for the children were a little bit dangerous when the sea was rough. A sofa which opens up to a double bed could have been safer. Entertainment was very good and kudos to the Costa production singers and dancers. The Shore Excursion office should have all the information on all tours when making inquiries. In booking tours , we asked questions about the excursion and were always told, I don't know. Is it not their job to know? Read Less

I have completed 30+ cruises on all the major lines over the last 15 years and have recently tried both the Pacifica and Fascinosa ships so hopefully I can provide a balanced review for members. It is clear this is a company who want to rebuild their reputation and do all they can to help you enjoy your cruise. Are they in the same league as Holland and America?-no. But neither are their prices and it maybe that you are happy to accept some of the "trade offs" in terms of expense: Cleanliness The ship was constantly being cleaned, the decks were disinfected every morning and one evening when I nipped back to the cabin the beds had been moved and the attendant was cleaning underneath them. I have never seen that on RCCL, HAL, Princess or Celebrity. We had fresh towels automatically daily and new linen every 2 days. Staff Were all friendly and attentive and one occasion, we ordered a pot of tea mid afternoon in a lounge. The assistant explained they only had alcohol in that bar but she rang and found us an attendant that came in specially to take our order and delivered it. There was a couple of evenings in the theatre were service was slow and this tended to be on the production show nights when the theatre was full. Arrive 15-20mins prior and you’ll be served. Logistics We were met at the airport but did have to wait for our transfer and then again to embark. We arrived in Marseille at 10.30, had to wait until 12.30 for the transfer ( when all flights had arrived) and then wait at the cruise centre. This was not explained very well and made us a little frustrated. Had we been told of the timings we could have gone and got a coffee at the airport or planned our journey differently. Costa flight policy is that you do not know the flight you are on until you have booked. This worked out great on the previous cruise when we embarked in Savona as the flight arrived at 10.30, 2 hour scenic transfer and we walked straight on the ship. On disembarkation, again straight to airport and then a 2pm flight back to UK. However, in Marseille we disembarked at 10am and their policy is to leave 3 hours until the flight time which meant we could not go on the 12.20pm back to Heathrow and we were placed on the 8.35pm. We made the most of the day by leaving our luggage at the airport ( 15 euro per case) and caught the transfer the train station in Marseille centre for 26 Euro return for 2. If you have the time, my advice is book your own flights even if it means going a day either side and staying in a hotel. We needed to do Sat to Saturday so we were very limited and it meant a very long day. Costa do embark/disembark at most ports so it’s not quite so hectic with every one needed to be off at the same time. As a result cases out by 1am, luggage tags are delivered on your last evening and disembarkation starts around 10am. Aside from the embarkation photo there were no photographers at each stop holding up the line and if you wanted a piccie at night they were available. Food The food is typically Mediterranean. When you walk into the buffet you will see bread, cheese, pizza, pasta at lunch time. My advice is to walk around the whole of the buffet area and there is lots of choice. We found a salad bar with a carvery that suited our tastes but they also had italien specialities every day elsewhere in the buffet. Same at breakfast, there is an egg station to fry your eggs/omelettes but walk round to find it. At dinner they have 5 courses, one of which is a pasta course. This tends to mean that each portion is smaller than what we would have at home. However, we missed the pasta out and asked to have a second appetiser to suit us and that was no problem. We tried the pizza restaurant at 4 euro each and had a very decent fresh pizza, salad bar and desert choice. We also ate in the Speciality dining 3 nights, now that costs 25 Euro each but the food was superb. The reason we avoided the dining room was not food related. On our first night we sat with 4 French folk who were lovely but only 1 could speak English and that’s hard going for 90 minutes. The Matire D tried to move us and we sat with 2 Dutch people the second night and again their English was limited. My husband and I prefer to be by ourselves and there are few tables for 2 as the Italians tend to travel in larger groups. For our first time we did get a table for 2 and it was great but for our own enjoyment we decided to pay the extra, sit by ourselves and have the food that they offered there. Drinks Package If you are going to have a posh coffee, a soda, 2 glasses of wine at lunch and 2 glasses of wine at night you will break even. We calculated that most days we had around 8 drinks ( posh coffess/Soda/ Wine at lunch and dinner and the odd cocktail/spirit) so for 25Euros per day per person it’s good value. There is a really good selection of all beverages, some are excluded such as Jack Dainels Whiskey but there are other whiskeys that you can have. Entertainment The shows all tend to be for an international audience so singers, dancers. Magician etc. The dancers really put on an energetic and lively set of shows. There was a crew show one night and a video of Sting in Concert. So something to see every night but they do not have teh same lavish productions as RCCL, there is no live orchestra but of course, you are not paying the same money for your trip and here’s one trade off area. There were parties every night and it seemed that all age groups joined in whatever the event. We had a super time at a party by the pool with the DJ one night. The entertainment guys showed us the dance moves to Italian disco music and I looked around and there were teenagers to retired folks jigging about. Join in, let yourself go and you’ll enjoy it. There were of course quieter events such as a piano bar, a dance band for the ballroom lovers and a rock and roll band if you wanted something inbetween. The Italians party late which also means that most days the ship is quiet until around 10am and most port visits start later than you will usually find ( and of course end later) that meant we could enjoy a quiet breakfast, do some gentle walking around the decks and still enjoy a tour. Tours Very reasonably priced for shuttles 5-8 Euro depending on distance. We paid 50E each for a transfer to Rome for the day ( 2hours each way) and most trips were around the 50E price so much better value than competitors. The only downside for English guests is that not all tours are available , depending on the mix onboard. We only had to switch trips one day to ensure and English guide but that is something to be aware of it you are desperate to see something. The one place I would say absolutely do a tour is Tunis. The town is a long way from the port and it’s a confusing place to try to do on your own.   Read Less

Took my two young kids on their first cruise. I had done a Costa cruise in the summer and enjoyed it. Cabin was fine for three people and it was great to have a balcony. Unlike many other reviewers, I had no problem with uninterested staff: maybe because my kids are nice, the staff were kind to us. They were smiling and helpful and we had no negative experience. The food was not as good as the NeoRomantica. It was OK, the dinners were better, but the buffet was heaving and the food was average. The kids liked it, but it wasn't classy enough for me. We had one day "at sea" and it was a bit rough; stormy seas and high winds. That's the price you pay for cruising in February I guess. We did none of the Costa excursions, since I already experienced that they are overpriced. On the whole, the cruise was fine, the ship was impressive for the kids. I just think next time I might go with a classier cruise line. Read Less

We had toured a week in Venice and a week in Florence. As Valentines Day was approaching we started exploring something different for the following week. Since we were already in Europe we wondered about a cruise. This cruise was the only one to fit our interest and time frame. We got a great last minute deal by phone directly through Costa in the week before departure. We were thrilled to find that we had been randomly upgraded from an Outside Classic Ocean View (window) to a Premium Veranda (balcony). Very few English as a first language passengers, but many spoke enough to be understood and were very warm to us. There were a LOT of Families from Italy, Spain, France, Germany and Slavic countries. A TON of kids who were up late after the 9PM Seating for Dinner and would be howling while being dragged down the long passageway to their cabin and bed. The kids at 6:30 Dinner seating were very well behaved. The Dining Room crew was very creatively active in musical "celebrations" both in the Dining Room and also in the Theatre. I'd suggest that they could provide more late night snack and room service options. There was a LOT of smokers on board There is only one inside smoking lounge, but it traveled to other areas in a big way, but it is southern Europe and that way everywhere you go. Bottom Line is... The food was fine. The itinerary was fine. The weather was fine. The crew was fine. The ship was fine. Read Less

When cruising with Costa Americans need to accept that they will be a minority on the ship. You will here many languages spoken, however the staff all have English as their common tongue. The embarkation in Savona was very smooth and well organized. We have cruised with Costa in the past with a disorganized embarkation, but they have gotten their act together. The ship was very clean, the staff friendly and the meals were excellent. Our ports of call were interesting, Marseilles, Tangier, Casablanca, Cadiz, Lisbon and Valencia. We did one excursion to Marrakesh. Due to only three English speakers on the tour we were placed with a German bus. When I discussed this with the guide on the bus, he arranged for an English guide when we arrived at our destination. I have no reservations in recommending Costa. They meals were excellent, Italian style, no huge meat portions, but every coarse interesting and tasty. Read Less
