We chose this cruise because of the stop at St. Petersburg. We also booked a two day excursion through Princess and were very satisfied with the experience. The start at Copenhagen and later a stop at Tallin and Warnemunde/Rostok (we didn't go to Berlin) were new to us. The other countries, Sweden, Norway and Finland we had visited before but enjoyed going back again. We have traveled Princess for 6 trips all over the world and they are a good solid cruise line. The overall experience on the Regal was good if you subtract the introduction of the Medallion program. No matter what you read, this program is in it's infancy and very buggy. In our opinion, of course. The problem is that the marketing department touts all that the program can do but when you as a passenger are trying to use the various apps - it can be extremely frustrating. Why? because other than getting you into your room and on and off the ship it only works as advertised 50% of the time (at best). We and our 7 companions on this cruise all ran into similar problems. If you are not technologically sophisticated, forget it, as it stands, the Medallion program will drive you nuts. OK enough on that topic. The staff on Princess are top notch! And this cruise is no exception - from our cabin attendant to the dinning room staff to bartenders, etc. all make you fell pampered and appreciated. Even staff that have no direct relationship to you make a point of saying hello. Entertainers were great and every evening we had something to do that was fun. Food - this is a bit dicey because my wife and I don't eat meat, chicken, turkey, etc. We do eat seafood, some eggs and cheese. So my comments are based on our experience as semi-vegetarians. In general the vegetarian options in the dinning rooms are carb heavy and very light on acceptable protein. So if you are like us, plan on spending time at the Horizon Court where you have a wide selection of excellent vegetarian friendly choices. In closing you can't go wrong with Princess but at this point we suggest going in with no expectations for the "Medalion" program and be pleasantly surprised if things have improved by the time you sail. We have another trip booked in the Mediterranean in 2020 so we'll report back then. Read Less

To spend seven days on the Baltic as guests with the Nautica-crew as host is unique. It is the experience of a week in a floating five-star hotel. Everything, with a small exception, was perfect. The accomodation, the infrastructure, the maintenance of the rooms and, last but not least, the great choice of excellent food, cannot be toppled. The major experience, nevertheless, is the disponibility and the kindness of the crew, from 41 different nations! All men and women, from the Captain to the single sailor, are kind, very attentive, helpful and friendly. The standard of the rooms is superior and the available space generous. The crew shows and lives an "esprit de corps" and a "unité de service". One point has to be improved by the management: it is not acceptable, nowadays, that a couple can only dispose of one free WLAN account and has to pay (a lot of) money for further accounts. A couple, today, has two cell phones and to tablets/computers. At least three accounts have therefore to be included in the basic offer! Please adapt this NOW. Read Less

We had wanted to do a different cruise than our normal Italy/Spain vacation and thought this sounded like a perfect fit. We flew in from a 3 day stop in Iceland and landed in Copenhagen late the night before we boarded. I don't like arriving the same day as embarking. The boarding process was painless. The ship has been recently renovated and was lovely. The only complaint I had about the room is having the bed dead center in the room, allowing very little area to walk around the bed. It seemed to be a waste of space to have the bed blocking the seating area. There was plenty of storage room and the bathroom was spacious; even had a tub. The food was the high point on this cruise. Normally I am sick of the buffets by day 3 of cruising but that was not the case on this trip. The food was always fresh and there was a large assortment. We also ate at of 4 of the restaurants; they were awesome! The entertainment was good; not great but there was plenty to do in the evenings. I feel the gym could have had more equipment. There were quite a few times where there were no open machines when I tried to work out and I tried several different times of the day. The shore excursions were my biggest complaint on this trip. The Berlin tour was good. I wanted more information on WW I and WW II, not just the Berlin Wall. One of the members of our group went on the tour of the concentration camp and seemed to enjoy that one better. Tallinn was amazing and we did that on our own. A little research and we were good to go. We were told we would have two days in St. Petersburg but realistically it is 24 hours. Upon docking, we did the Evening at the Hermitage which was nice but the museum was actually closed when we took the tour. A lot of the lighting was turned off and none of the shops were open. However, it is only open for cruise tours and when you see the line during the day, you are grateful to have the experience you had. I had booked the Catherine's Palace and the St. Petersburg church tour before we left the US and was told it would be fine; two tours in one day. However personnel on the ship told me I couldn't make it and they would not refund money if we did not get back in time for the second tour. One of the people in our group went on the Catherine's Palace and had plenty of time when he got back before the second tour started. I was disappointed to say the least and the four hour St. Petersburg tour I took instead was very poorly done. It was basically driving around town in a bus looking at buildings. We were leaving port 24 hours after we got there. Not a two day stay. The last two excursions were a total waste of time. We did the hop on/hop off options for Stockholm and Helsinki and didn't have even enough time to make it around the entire route once. We were in town for a very short period of time and the options were very limited. I would have liked to have a more time in port and a later time to leave. We did the Copenhagen to the airport option and that was perfect. We had plenty of time to see the city with a great guide and then we were dropped at the airport. Two of us stayed with the luggage and the rest of us took the metro back into town and went to Tivoli Gardens and spent a few hours there. I would definitely do this tour again but would hope more time could be spent in port in some of the towns and less time between each destination. The distance is not so great we couldn't have more time in port. Read Less

We choose this cruise for the uniqueness of the destination, the Baltic Countries. a great experience on the cruise but couple of things left us angry and wanting 1) Seafood Paella being served was a highlight as we love seafood and Paella, we know Halal is not offered but the paella had PORK sausages even though pork was not mentioned on the menu description. With the number of Muslims cruising with NCL, I would think they would at least be clear about that. live cooking omelets in the breakfast saw spatulas being used to turn ham filled and normal eggs, The Indian Dishes , in the garden Cafe had beef and pork dishes along with the vegetarian choices, which sort of says NCL does not care about the sensitivities of this segment of the market. The pullman beds were left out for the duration of the cruise and not closed daily which would have made the day time cabin use pleasant. Value for money, being specific an 1 year old infant being charged full 3rd person cost is not value for money in anyway as there is nothing infant friendly available or provided by the cruise line, Freestyle for adults is definitely a great way to cruise and value for money, but NCL has to look into the Muslim cruising market by making sure pork is properly marked and the utensils not used, at least by the crew handling the food, in an interchangeable manner, may be even take some pointers from other cruise line on how to avoid the same, like Carnival. We had 8 seniors in the group, for who there was no on board activity, that they could enjoy, These avoidable incidents would have enhanced the good experience Read Less

The entertainment on the ship was amazing! We went to see Burn the Floor, Cirque Dreams and Steam, the Magic Show and the Million Dollar Quartet. They were all fantastic and you could tell that the performers were very experienced. The dining was okay. Garden Cafe had lots of options when it came to different cuisines. The teppanyaki restaurant and La Cuchina were nice but it was really annoying because kids have to eat from the kids' menu in the specialty restaurants. The service was so-so. It took a long time for the staff to get the drinks. The pools and hot tubs were very nice. I liked that the pools were not saltwater like many other cruises I have been on. The ports were amazing. The only problem that I had was that it was a bit chilly so you need to make sure to bring jackets. I have a special recommendation for a man named Kashif from Zimbabwe. He was a photographer on our cruise and he was very kind and he is one of the best staff members on our cruise. He definitely deserves a raise!!! Read Less

I would just concur with the poster who wrote "Marginal and Loud" as their headline. If you like really big, really loud, really overcrowded, and really under-serviced ships, then this ones for you. Otherwise I would run and "Getaway" as fast as you can. The ports were great though. The room attendants were friendly and spot on, so I will give kudos where due. The Starbucks was great. The sushi restaurant was not half bad, and the steak place was downright good. The rest, well...just mediocre to bad. The wait times for tables, the feeding troughes at the buffet (literally not to be able to find a table at the buffet and having to eat outside where its 50 degrees is unacceptable for any ship), the nickel and dime fees for everything, the cacophony of noise in the main sections of the ship. I waited 3 days for them to bring me a case of water I purchased the minute I got there, which I'm pretty sure is the same water that comes out of the tap but that's besides the point. At some point at day 2 I had to buy liters of water at the bars because I didn't know if I was ever going to get it. Water, you know, it's kind of important to some people. I recommend buying the bar water btw and not the case water, the bar water is actual good quality bottled water, not their crappy filtered water. I have become used to smaller ships after many years of cruising and don't like crowds, so this just wasn't the ship for me. I chose this ship because we were traveling with 4 teens and I wanted them to have more activities like the ropes course and slides etc. But with 5K people and very limited hours that these facilities were open, no one used them from my group anyway. The only saving grace for my group was the Haven which is worth the money if purchased on day 1. It's the only area of relative quiet and the pools and saunas are nice. All in all this felt like a Carnival ship sailing in the Baltic. So if you like Carnival, you'll like the Getaway. Read Less

Amazing immaculate ship, mind-blowing destinations and attentive staff make this cruise a winner. I recommend this cruise. Each port is an amazing experience! The food options ar top rate! It is easy to see why this cruise line is tops in its category. We found a waiter that was particularly attentive and it made all the difference in the world with our dininng habits. The is also a laundry room if needed. However, they make no qualms about letting you know that they are out to get your money. Watch out for the expensive internet fees, hard beds, and wait times if you purchase outside excursions. Ther were some intersting moments with the staff—— a wait manager who threw a tantrum at a hostess in front of us and a bartender who told me to get my own water. These incidents were negligible, everyone has a bad day, but I rally resented being forced to disembark later than those who had bought Princess offshore excursions. Read Less

My health limits me, medication makes it difficult to drive. My wife has poor feet and it pains her to walk. We desired to go on a vacation and the honeymoon of a lifetime and after considering all options we decided on a cruise. Our documents arrived early, and one morning after prayer we decided to visit a travel agent and book a cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway the Baltic cruise. We thrive on cool weather, the history, and the chance of a world class tour appealed to us. Our travel agent assured us we were too late to book passage, as it was early May 2018, but checked at our urgent request. Amazingly a mini-suite on deck 14 was available. We took it immediately and had a wonderful amazing time. The food, shopping, ports, entertainment. were all fantastic. I recommend a beverage package. Food was superior everywhere we ate and we ate almost everywhere. Making sure to hit all 3 meals a day a snack as desired and room service. When I die, if heaven is like the cruise on the breakaway plus God then I am ok with that. There were lots of people, a great wonderful mix of culture. The crew was well staffed and equal to the task. A bit of overcrowding could be expected at the fantastic end of cruise sail. We enjoyed the art auction put on by Park-West and purchased a few to proudly display around our home. Not normally a person to play bingo, I did at the request of my wife and won $105. dollars. Not much of a gambler I did play some craps; after the staff explained the game patiently to me the casino was great. I quit even. The free raffle was moved after the time announced, on a you must attend to win, so much for integrity of gaming standard regarding raffles, but no big deal I left rather than hang around. Our mini-suite was comfortable, well equipped, the shower was super with an unlimited supply of hot water. The queen size bed was comfortable, the balcony wonderful, we lived there nicely. Mr. Karl Loxley was wonderful we caught two of his shows. The Cirque was extraordinary. The "off Broadway" play Rock of Ages was just putrid, no humor to speak of, we left mid show as did several others. It wasn't the vulgarity, or the adult theme it was plainly not funny, boorish and of low quality acting. John our house keeper was terrific our super crew member was a vast store of knowledge, a hard worker who as always right there for us. The spa was great, two Swedish massages and a bathing ritual, I so enjoyed working with their assistant Manager Frank. Thanks you. Port excursions were we chose to be selective and limit our spending. We did not have a visa for Russia so a crews ship tour was required to enter the country; and I would not have missed it. In Finland we used a bus tour hop on hop off saw lots got off at two stops and were able to re-board easily both times. Enjoying an outdoor market on the bay. In Sweden we took a local cab with the same type of hop on and hop off service and visited the little town by the anchorage. It was wonderful, visited a local supermarket, ate at a local breakfast establishment and shopped at the local stores. In Estonia we took a cab into Talen, were a lot of things were closed as it was Sunday, but the mall was open, a wonderful stroll and we did some shopping. Returning to the ship we bought most of our goodies from Estonia from the shops on the pier. Love it, will do it again if my health allows. Read Less

We chose the serenade because of the great destinations and with a 7 year old girl it felt like a convenient way to get around and see Scandinavia and Russia. Having said that we were very conscious that the ship itself was fairly old and small and we’d read reviews about everything that has gone wrong from embarkation to food to the service. But we were so pleasantly surprised right through the programme. Getting on the ship was an absolute breeze. We were taken into lunch at the Windjammer and by the time we’d finished the rooms were ready. The rooms also was just about right and clean with a cozy balcony. It was serviced twice a day with my child’s bunker bed put down during the evening turn down service. Our daughter absolutely loved the kids club activities in the adventure ocean club (9 am to 12pm; 2pm to 5pm and 7pm to 10pm). So much so that she didn’t join us in a couple of ports. This gave us ample time to lounge around, check the 16 bars without having to worry about her. This was such a blessing and the team at adventure ocean where thorough professionals providing fun educational ways to keep the children engaged. The service also was really exceptional and personalised. We got the same table in the dining room. But also in Windjammer. The staff is from all over and friendly and ever willing to engage in conversations. The food was amazing all through and surprisingly we did not get bored although we didn’t do any of the speciality dining. The staff is particular about hiegene and everyone follows through with sanitised hands. No cases of Nora virus was reported on the ship which was the other thing we were worried about. The other impressive feat was the way a helicopter landed to fly someone out. It was just the most amazing sight. And the copter looked too large but we didn’t feel a thing when it landed or took off. And there wasn’t any fuss at all. Entertainment on the ship was also quite nice in the tropical theatre, in the centrum and the safari club. Some of the home grown productions are quite good. The team really makes an effort and it comes through. We didn’t do shore excursions with the exception of Russia for visa. In all other places we were offered a shuttle service into the city centre for 10 dollars. There was no hassle getting out or in whatsoever and no preference was given to people on the shore excursions as we had read. All in all without having to spend on any additionals the cruise turned out to be a lovely experience and we are considering more such cruises. We will in all probability sail on the royal Caribbean. The ship offers gorgeous views of the sea with glass everywhere. Read Less

Overall cruise experience was really nice. Embarkation went without issue and staff going around to give drinks as t was hit the day we were embarking. Very professional Service from all crew staff in all front. They are always there to make sure we are comfortable and satisfied. Our room were always clean & organized. The stuffed towel animals are always a nice welcome when you come back to the room.Variety of food offerings is also good. However, consistency of food and quality of food can be better on the complementary restaurants. I expect better food quality from Manhattan, Savour & Taste. Out of 5 meat dishes I ordered only 1 of them was acceptable. Pesto Pasta wa the same. It’s better to get the pasta dish from the pasta station in the Garden Cafe cuz they heat it up for you. Maybe you can have bubble tea in the future and ramen offerings since you have the noodle bar. The entertainment team was always very energetic especially Adriano, Shirley & Romeo. Roberto the entertainment director is also very professional. Guest service manager should smile more like the rest of the team. We took 1 shore excursion to check out & we were disappointed. Driver was good but the guide was not. She doesn’t know a lot of local and general information regarding Sweden. I will rethink the shore excursion next time especially the ones we took privately the rest of cruise was really good & cheaper. Read Less

We've cruised a few times but so far this is our new favourite. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because of the location of the casino, it was right smack in the middle of Deck 7 where all guests including children passed by, so you inhaled the smoke and all, but I guess it had a strategic location and purpose by NCL. The shows were good especially Cirque Dreams, vocalist Karl Loxkey and the female violinist. Food was tasty and had a variety of selection. There were themed nights at the Garden Cafe, and the Grilled Night was the best! The Prime Rib special of the day at O'Sheehans Is a must try, tender and mouth watering, cooked to perfection! The Indian themed lunch at Moderno's was very flavourful and tasted authentic! The cruise director, Dan Dan was my favourite of all. He was quick, witty, smart, hilarious and very generous and attentive! He even rendered a duet with Karl Loxley at the Matinee Farewell Show. He was such a great singer! His staff was amazing! The Matinee Farewell Show by the way is not to be missed! There was so much things to do and see for the family. Lots of free demonstrations and health seminars during the last sea day. Crew were attentive to guests' needs. There was also Lounge and cabins for single cruisers. Overall it was a cruise to remember! Read Less

The buffet is open 21h a day. Since outside was a bit cold and windy we use the interior swimming pool and jacuzi. Our kids could do an "indepent" life since have own programs and we fell safe on board. The possibility to stop and visit 6 different cities of 5 different countries is an amazing experience. This was the second time we had been on the Regal Princess - the first was in September 2015 (Copenhagen to New York) and this last voyage was around the Baltics. We liked the ship - hence, our choice to travel on her again in preference to other cruise lines to our Baltic destinations. The ship is great, well laid out and easy to navigate. What was missing on this cruise was a "wow" factor - Yes, St Petersburg was clearly a highlight in terms of destination but it was more about the lack of energy on the ship to engaged with passengers. Compared to the previous cruise which had Martin Moss as the Cruise Director (who was fantastic), the current Cruise Director, Billy Hygate appeared to lack any overt enthusiasm and was rarely seen or heard around the ship. Apparently he had been with Princess for 45 years and it showed. His assistant also appeared over awed by him during the Wake Show. The Production shows were first rate and guest performers were entertaining. I must admit that it is disappointing that some passengers (and nationalities) lack a standard of manners that detracts from the overall on-board cruise experience - I refer here to courtesy around entering and existing lifts and behaviours around the Horizon Court and Buffet. After search for a cruise around the Baltic, we found this one and choose it for the best itinerary (it visited more ports than cruises offered by other cruise lines) and for the incredible price (less than 1000 euros per passenger). I had cruised on MSC Opera in Brazil few years ago, before its stretchening and renewal. I love this ship for its size (perfect - not so large like a floating mega-resort and not too small to be boring). An indoor pool (or retractable roof) and heating would be welcome, because the cruise sailed in a cold region, and almost only two jacuzzis were used. Service and food is OK, but I expected more, especially after compare it with the seen on my previous cruises with MSC in South America, when the food had more variety and taste and the waiters used to be less "cold". Despite the great number of brazilian and portuguese passengers aboard, there was no announcements and menus in Portuguese (it's a fail - today MSC is the market leader in Brazil!). We also missed a shuttle to/from Copenhagen homeport (linking it to a central train station or to the airport). Even the ferry companies (such as DFDS) are offering it! It was offered only in the last cruise day and ended soon. We tried to book it before leaving the ship but the bookings were finished (on DFDS ferry we booked the shuttle few minutes before disembarking). About the shore excursions, we booked only one (Catherine's palace in St Petersburg). Good service, better than other shore excursions we'd booked on previous cruises. Read Less

Great venues and wonderful food. Definitely higher end as far as cost, but you get what you pay for... Liquor prices and packages are high and the sommelier actually advised against the wine package. I had done some research on the wines offered and agreed - $9 wines with mediocre ratings for $47.50 a bottle. We also found that there was no problem buying a bottle of wine or liquor in port and bringing it to your room. We splurged and got a penthouse suite. It was considerably larger than a regular suite but I didn't find their "butler" service to be much more than a regular concierge. The size was, however, worth it. We highly advise to build in extra days in the first and last locations to get your full value on the trip. If you book those through Oceania, you get all extra travel and connections covered which is very nice. Read Less

We had first cruised on Norwegian in Feb. 2016 on a Caribbean cruise. We had a suite on the Dawn, which was great and that probably affected our decision to join this cruise on her sister ship. There could not have been a bigger difference between the quality of the onboard experience. This ship and its staff were a disappointment at every level. The serving staff were anything but pleasant and appeared extremely unhappy in their jobs. There were exceptions, of course, but it doesn't take many bad apples to spoil the barrel. We had a balcony cabin that was the smallest I've ever seen on a ship. The leader of our group, who upgraded to a suite at the rear of the ship even had a cabin that I would equate to our last balcony room on Celebrity...nothing like a suite at all. By far, the quality and choices of food were our biggest complaint. The buffet was like pigs at the trough and we avoided that one like the plague. The other sit-down restaurants that did not charge a premium had a fixed menu that was mediocre. Even recipes for standard entrees that one would think no one could screw up were bastardized to the point they were nearly inedible (think chicken cordon bleu). The premium pay-per-plate restaurants were better, but by no great margin. We were served the worst lobster I think we've had anywhere in their steak house, and the Brazilian restaurant cooked their meats to a dried-up fare-thee-well. The elevators on the ship were a constant pain. It seemed as if they were running only half the elevators in each of the 3 banks and they took forever, being packed to the gills when they did finally show up. We did a lot of stair waking. Excursions were booked with 3rd party providers and the ports we visited were great, but at a pace that was almost too jam-packed for a real relaxing experience. On the bright side, the ship arrived promptly as advertised at all ports and with the exception of the elevators, embarking / disembarking was a breeze. The Free At Sea drink program is the best, and the bar staff was much better than the restaurant staff. I think this will probably be our last ride with Norwegian. Read Less

Cruise wasf OK, had balcony room on floor 8 and had best cabin person I have ever had. Christopher Williams was excellent and really did a great job. Ship needed painting and interior was OK. Shows stunk and were not good at all. Food has really gone down hill and they cut out lobster night. Lunch was OK and Breakfast was really good. Service was very good, and everyone friendly. Casino was not busy and everyone was complaining of loosing. Port of Call were OK, nothing special. We went to Iceland afterwords and wish we had gone there instead of cruising. Went to 12 floor for drinks and we were the only ones there, I know why now. Drinks were terrible and costly. Cruise Hawaii and you will enjoy that much better. in Geiranager Norway we rented the small cars and went up the mountain and had a blast. When I say small I mean small. Read Less

The cruise was sold to us by a travel agent and included shore excursions at every port. We were very impressed by the ship, the food and all the activities offered, especially the cooking demonstrations, the Computer lessons and the Art Auctions.. The ship was very steady and for most of the time you were not aware of the motion if you didn't look out of a window!! Our Veranda Cabin on deck 8 was quite comfortable and the best was having morning coffee served to you room. Our luggage was lost in transit to the cruise and the ship agents were very helpful and supplied us with toiletries, loaned us clothes and allowed us same day express laundry.till our luggage caught up with us after 5 days! My only complaints were slow service in the evening sit down meals (Vista Dining room) and the midi-core quality of the nightly entertainment in the Vista Lounge. I do think I'll take another cruise with the some day. Read Less

Great itinerary! We loved the ship but most of all the ports were great! The food was fantastic. The steakhouse is the best we have ever had!!!! Amazing food and service. Our main table in Symphony was also great. Mariana was a fantastic server! She was so attentive, nice and efficient! The ship is very nice. It has a nice adult pool are and another nice pool for kids. Not too much to do for older teens who are not 18. I would have liked to see more live music later at night. It usually stopped around 11-ish The shows were very good. Even though the ship is very big, the layout is great and it was easy to get around . Nice walking deck. Nice gym too, Just the right number of sea days. The only thing I would change is more time in Stockholm, Sweden. We had perfect weather. Each post was fantastic. 1. Copenhagen- went a day early and it was great. Don't miss Tivoli Gardens. Go to the main marina and take a great canal tour. 2. Oslo, Norway - Amazing Vigeland sculpture park. You can do the hop on hop off bus. Great Cafes and beautiful walking areas 3. Berlin- We hired a Brewer's Berlin Tours. Jonathan was a fantastic tour guide. The bus was extremely comfortable and spacious. Went to incredible places and Jonathan was very knowledgeable! 4.Estonia- we took a taxi to the old city. Walked around and had lunch. 5. St Petersberg Russia- We hired Peter's Walk. They arranged the visas. They picked us up in a nice bus and had great 2 day tour. You can customize the tour based on your preference. Do not miss going to Ginza Restaurant in St Petersberg. Amazing food and view. Loved the canal rides. 6. Helsinki Finland- Wend to the outdoor market by taxi and then took a boat ride to a beautiful island 7. Stockholm Sweden- AMAZING bike ride with Stephan at Sweden Bikes. If you like bike riding do not miss it. Great way to see the city and country in a short time. Great bikes, very responsible, informative and so nice! We were also able to see the famous and beautiful Stockholm Synagogue. This day was the highlight of our trip. Read Less

We have cruised many times on other cruise lines. We chose Oceania because of the destination and previous positive Oceania experiences from friends. The cabins were very comfortable , refrigerators well stocked, and the food was outstanding! I love to take baths so the full size bathtub was much appreciated. We liked the size of the ship-- easy to disembark/ embark for excursions. We never felt crowded or rushed . Getting into a dining room was always easy. In the Terrace Cafe, we appreciated the waiters/ kitchen staff dishing up the plates rather than each person serving himself. This seemed much more sanitary and appealing. Room service was always prompt. One comment I would like to make is there is no place open after 11:00 if you want a late night sweet. Having returned from the theater about 10:45, I couldn't find any place to get ice cream or desserts. I had to settle on a cookie in the conscierge room. Read Less

We recently returned from the NCL Norwegian Sun Baltic Cruise that sailed on September 11, 2011 from Copenhagen. The ship itself looks great and we had no issues with a balcony cabin on Deck 8. Our cabin steward was very efficient and did a fine job. We really enjoyed the ports and had no complaints with any of the shore excursions. Our biggest problem relates to ship life. The ship has a major design flaw with it's buffet on Deck 11. Most ships we've been on in the past have mirroring buffet lines on both sides of the ship with plenty of seating. Norwegian Sun has a buffet only on one side of the ship, the other side has a bar and small dining area. There is a secondary buffet outdoors with less choices at the aft end of the ship with outside seating. This would be fine if the weather was always good, but a mid to late September cruise in the Baltic doesn't lend itself to outdoor eating, particularly in the morning. There was a constant battle to find a table indoors. The buffet itself seemed small with fewer choices from our past experiences. The food was OK. We were disappointed with the coffee/juice bar since they cut off juice drinks after breakfast. A money saving trick. Eventually we gave up on the buffet altogether, electing to go to the relatively empty dining room for breakfast. We did learn that you didn't want to be in a hurry to meet a shore excursion without giving yourself at least 1 1/2 to eat in the dining room. Lunch wasn't a big issue since we took most all day shore excursions. Fortunately, there were only two sea days to contend with at lunch time. Our group of 22 had three tables reserved for dinner every night which was nice. Service however, was very spotty. Just getting your water glass refilled became a challenge on many occasions. We wondered if NCL's decision to automatically charge your ship credit for daily tips leaves the incentive out for the staff to do a good job. Some of our cruise mates elected to have their daily $12/person charge reduced because of the service. Food for the table would arrive in spurts, instead of at the same time. The menu was rather bland and uninspired. The Sun has five specialty restaurants, all with $25-$30/person upcharges. Seems like you shouldn't have to pay an extra $50 to have a good steak. At least we didn't have to in the past. Drink costs were rediculous. $2.50 for a diet pepsi is sad. Overall, we felt that there are plenty of cruise lines sailing to the same destinations and NCL is no longer on our list of choices. Read Less

This was our first cruise on Azamara. Now we are spoiled! Yes, it is more expensive upfront, but what you get is unsurpassed. Tips, features wines, soda, specialty coffee and teas, snacks, ice cream, even fresh squeezed juices: all included. Even with only 640 passengers, there were 3 lecturers on board the ship: a naturalist, a geologist, and an expert in geo-political of Western Europe. The captain was everywhere with the passengers, but when he told us that he was stopping for some fresh fish as we entered the North Sea from Norway, we really didn't believe him -- until the ship stopped and a fisherman pulled up along side. While we had several sea days, we were so busy learning that we had no time for trivia. Even hearing the cruise director's experience fighting pirates was amazing and interesting. The physical condition of the ship, although older, was spotless and very well maintained inside and out. Seating in the cafe was adequate, even at the busiest times. The dining room was lovely and with true "any time dining" policy that worked well. Even embarkation and disembarkation were smooth and without stress. The entertainment that we liked the best was the incomparable Brooks Aehron on the piano. Whether with the band, with aCD accompanment, or as a soloist, the music was phenomenal. Added to the music were explanations of the composers, the pieces, and the times when the pieces were written. As much as we enjoyed the food in the dining room, we also enjoyed the food in the cafe (aka 'cafeteria'). Everything was well-prepared to our liking. Service was excellent and flexible. If we wanted to stay and chat with our tablemates, that was fine with the staff. If we were in a hurry, that also was not a problem. All featured wines were included in the price for the cruise. However, if the featured wine was not to your taste, the rest of the wines were very reasonably priced. At various times, we sat around the pools, even though they were a bit too cold to use in those latitudes. When we were given the towels, we did not need to leave a deposit on our sea pass to insure the return of the towels. Lap robes were also provided, as were robes and slippers in our cabins. Read Less
