First the positives: excellent entertainment- if you can get a seat to participate Great staterooms Our room steward Narendra was fabulous Cirque Dreams and Steam was amazing Burn the floor dancers show was fabulous The rope course was great and so were the attendants The water slides were fun The grilled shrimp in the garden cafe was excellent consistently Ports of Rotterdam, Southampton, LeHavre, Portland, Cobh and Bermuda were great. The drawbacks: -Too small Cabin deck - one person would have to get up to allow the other to get into the second chair. A book and one glass could fit on the outside table. -TERRIBLE dining service. Even Cagney’s their very expensive steak house the steaks were inconsistent and the side dish came long after your steak and the wine delivered twice was wrong. Mostly the dining staff were disinterested, the meal timing was bad and more then not there were long waits between courses. -The brand new rock and roll venue Syd Norman’s was probably the most popular and grossly undersized for the interest. This bar very small and was full more then 1-2 hr before the band went on stage holding 1/5 of the persons who attempted to attend. -Popular events were held in the atrium instead of the theater. This area also was very small holding a very limited number of people. -Very disappointing not to be able to dock in Azores but this was a weather issue. -What was inexcusably the worst planned shore event was Great Stirrup Cay - if you didn’t pay for a shore excursion you had to sign up for a tender after those with an excursion we’re given priority. The ships staff appeared to make no attempt to monitor who signed up for which tender. Our tender number 10 left almost two hours late - at almost 2 pm getting us to the island when all the food venues closed at 2 pm. First excuse was “it took a long to get people on and off tenders” the second excuse was “the swells were slowing down the tenders” and the third and finally more honest was “we are sharing the 3 tenders with another ship”. This was exceptionally poorly done and what could have been a 4 hr day on the island was reduced to 2 hungry hours and 1 hour if that in line to get back in a tender. The island does not have the capacity for 2 large ships as we experienced. -excuses aplenty on this ship and they kept morphing. -Miami our first domestic port- everyone had to go thru customs. We disembarked to end our cruise here. We received a typed letter from NCL to congregate in an area at 7-7:15 am to depart FIRST as a group. The night before customer service indicated this would be at 7:30 am and we made travel arrangements accordingly. After what looked to be about 300-500 passengers and their luggage arrived we were told we would be LAST to depart! This was via elevators- for staff - some not working into the port where we stood for an hour in line on a hot stuffy gangway. We finally got to the curb at 10 am long after travel planned. This was our 4th Atlantic crossing. Weather is an expected issue. NCL’s inability to handle a crowd of 3600+ passengers was not expected. Yes this ship can sleep that many but it cannot seat in entertainment venues, feed or disembark in a timely manner this many. Every member of our party contracted a respiratory illness at one time or another and hacking coughing and I’ll appearing persons could be seen and heard throughout the ship. I will not travel a Norwegian ship again. No matter how nice and talented the ships captain is. I recommend Celebrity or Holland or Disney for Atlantic crossings. All were smaller ships with consistently fine service. Read Less

Over the past 12 years we have cruised with NCL 13 different cruises. We had always wanted to visit some of the Baltic countries, especially Russia. This particular cruise covered most of our wish list. Two / three months after we booked this cruise and made our airline reservations, we were sent an email stating that do to a port scheduling conflict we would not be making the port stop in Stockholm, Sweden but would stop at a small port on the western coast of Sweden called Gothenburg...there's virtually nothing their to do or see. But since we had made our airline reservations we were stuck with this cruise. Since the ship was going to be in St. Petersburg, Russia for 2 full days, we decided to take a "Private non-NCL tour to Moscow. The tour company we used did a great job. In their communications to us they warned us about NCL may not allow us to disembark the ship just as soon as it has been cleared by the Russian officials. However, we could leave the ship once the passengers going on NCL bought tours had disembarked. Our flight out of St. Petersburg going to Moscow was to leave at 09:40AM. The first thing I did when I boarded the ship for departure was to go to the Customer Service Desk, stood in line for 45 minutes and finally spoke to a very non-helpful individual. He said " go stand in the other line to get a number assigned for disembarking AFTER NCL TOUR PEOPLE were off the ship. I told his this would not work and I wanted to speak whith his manager. He disappeared for 15 minutes and finally returned with his manager. I explained the situation to the manager and he said he would handle it and would leave me a voicemail on my cabin phone. I waited till the next day and NO VOICEMAIL message. So, I went back down to customer service desk stood in line again, spoke to a different desk person...same answer "NO CAN DO"...asked to speak to the manager again. A different person came out...explained the situation again...he said he would send me a voicemail with instructions...next day...no message. The late afternoon prior to arrival in St. Petersburg I finally spoke to a person who said he would take care of it and again ...send me a voicemail. Lo and behold 1 hour later I received the voicemail with these instruction. Please go to the Port side door of the Getaway Theater arounf 7 - 7:15AM. Show the gentlemen my tour ticket to Moscow and they would let disembark as soon as the ship cleared. That morning, we went to the port side door of Getaway Theater showed personnel our tour ticket and they said we needed to go to the service desk. We went to the desk and had a manager escort back to the theater. We were then able to leave the ship, clear port security and finally meet with our tour guide for Moscow. We made it on the plane with 15 minutes to spare. Enough of my of that. How about a general over all. If the Getaway was cruising in a warm climate many of the guests would be outside by the pool, walking / jogging waterslides, basketball and all the other outdoor activities. BUT with cool windy weather all 4,000 passengers and 1,600 crew were inside. That said, it was the most over crowed uncomfortable ship I've ever been on. In retrospect, the customer service group did a very poor job. Be cause of that I currently have a cruise booked with NCL in May 2020, that I will more than likely cancel. It may be time to look at other cruise lines. I refuse to sign out without saying something positive...To get away from the massive crowds we chose to pay the price and eat at Cagney's....The food there is wonderful each and every night. My wife wanted to adopt our waiter Ronald he was such a pleasure and also Cagney's hostess Maricel, see took care of us with timely reservations and great ocean views from our table. Read Less

My family was excited for months to cruise. The suite we had was very nice and clean along with a beautiful balcony. Everything from that point on went down hill. There were so many people on the ship you felt like sardines. The ship was big and kids activities were nice but you had to wait on line for a couple of hours to do the ropes course, rock wall and some of the slides. The food to say the least was sup par we pretty much ate indian food everyday, eggs bendect were soggy, French toast we tried twice both times not cooked thru, once my daughter got a raw hamberger, barely any seafood, Restaurant service was soooooo SLOW. Only 2 shows that we liked the rest were not entertaining, one time we were asked to leave a show as there were not enough seats crazy isn't it for all the money that we spend they did not have enough entertainment to go around. My son, daughter and Mother in law all got sick and 2 of them had to be quarenteened for 24 hours. They got food poisoning from the ship and this is the best they blamed it on us and were pretty rude about it. I contacted headquarters when I came back to the states only to find out that customer service was not any better twice I wrote to them only receiving an automated response with NO solutions. One of the Worst Cruise lines we have ever taken AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read Less

We went on this cruise for a family trip to get to know the Baltics. The ship has a lot of things to do, but if is going to cruise the baltic sea it should have an indoor pool and more indoor activities, the weather was good only the first two days, the rest, all the outside was impossible to use The baltics are beautiful countries, but the amount of time you stay there is very low and my perception is the only reason is because Norwegian wants you to consume inside the ship vs in the city. One example was when we were in Tallinn, we had to be on the ship by 15:30, in front of us there was another ship from TUI, they were asked to be there at 23:00, the next morning when we arrived to Helsinki, the TUI ship was already in front of us, so the reason is not only to be able to travel. Another complain is that Norwegian apparently lost a lot of what a cruise is, no welcoming reception, no animal towels every night, etc. They are going to far with this free-style experience. The food was awful in almost all the restaurant, no typical food, no variety. The only one where we had a good dinner was Cagney the Steakhouse. The Seafood restaurant was fully booked since the first day, meaning that it should be bigger to allow all passengers to try it. Entertainment was nice, particularly the Cirque of Steam and Dreams. The arcade areas were also nice for the kids, but I didn't want them to spend that much time inside. The service was average, some people were very nice, some were not. Generally a disappointment from the ship and crew perspective Read Less

We were two families of three generations (including grandparents and children) excited to be traveling to Baltic destinations. We stayed in a balcony family cabin (14814) that had a Pullman bed. I had previously sailed twice with my family on Royal Caribbean with similar accommodation so had an idea of what to expect. Overalll Royal Caribbean was by far more organised, pleasant and enjoyable. Left NCL in its wake. In summary: Good points: Easy booking Easy NCL bus transfer from airport to cruise terminal and cruise terminal to city Centre Loved Million Dollar Quartet Show Loved the Magician show Engaging staff at onboard bars Loved St Petersburg Clean cabin Spacious bathroom Enjoyed the water slides, climbing wall, mini golf and sports deck Bad points: Felt chaotic and overcrowded when first boarding the ship. I wanted to get off as soon as I got on. Absolutely terrible safety briefing- the children and I were crammed into the casino which stank of cigarettes and we couldn’t see anything because of the number of people The actual briefing was relayed in several languages which made the briefing excruciatingly long. RC was out on the deck in small groups and was far less time consuming My daughters Pullman bed was not made until almost midnight on our first night!!! Guest services was located opposite the central atrium which meant that you could not hear a thing the service personnel was saying if there was a band or other entertainment playing. I have excellent hearing and could not hear, so I felt sorry for the elderly people with hearing aides in the queue. Seriously bad location for guest services! The casino was centrally located in the middle of the ship on a middle deck. This meant that you had to walk through it to get to restaurants, bars or other services. As you are allowed to smoke in the casino it was disgusting to smell cigarettes whilst at the nearby noodle restaurant or to have to walk through it with children. RC has the casino at the bottom of the ship and out of the way. On the first day there was a problem with my credit card and when I went to guest services to sort it out I was quickly made aware that I was not the only one with problems. The queue was enormous. People had been waiting in line for hours!!!! Yet again, there was a band playing which made the whole experience frustrating. The queue was there the next two nights!! The free buffet restaurant The Garden Cafe, was nowhere near as good as the Windjammer on RC. The layout was like that of a school canteen with all the food stations located in a rectangular central hub that you walked around. The food was okay but not very exciting. The RC windjammer was more open and visually appealing with tastier food options. Paying 5USD for a bottle of water was absolutely absurd. The smoking area was right near the main swimming pool in the middle of the deck!!!! It was on the same deck as the outdoor seating for the Garden Cafe so on occasion the waft of cigarette smoke would blow towards you whilst eating. Disgusting! You would also have to walk past the smokers to get to the ping pong tables. Smoking on a ship is a health and safety risk. At the very least the smoking station should be away from areas that children and non smokers use. Specialty dining restaurants were not so special. Ocean Blue was the best of the lot. The others were all the same. The poor ship layout, food choices and inferior qualities compared to RC means I would never sail with NCL again. Read Less

To be clear, we chose Norwegian because of the port stops and because the timing of this cruise allowed us to take it with another family. Overall, we had a great time with our friends, liked the port stops (except Russia), but the Norwegian part of the experience was disappointing. In the past, we have cruised with Disney (2), Princess (1), and Carnival (1). Liked... 1. The ports and excursions were generally good, but expensive. 2. Bar services were very good (few lines, good drinks). Sugarcane Mojito Bar was excellent. 3. The few on-board entertainment / shows were very good (Burn the Floor and Cirque Dreams & Steam, Sid Norman’s nightly rock entertainment). 4. Food was good, but best food was at restaurants where an extra cover charge was paid ($30+ per person). 5. Laundry service ($20 per bag) was a great service to offer. 6. My son enjoyed the 13-17 kids club. Activities were plenty and well-structured. Did not like… 1. The ship was not ‘full’ (we were told) but it felt crowded everywhere we went, especially on at-sea days. We found it difficult to find seats in the lounges & common areas; seating at the Garden Grill / buffet was terrible; lines at guest services were almost always 20-30 people deep; had to wait for an elliptical machine in the fitness area; waited 20 minutes in the internet café and walked away; no-cover restaurants had a wait unless you had reservations. 2. Did not like the "Free Style" dining option. They advertised 5-10 minute waits but, in reality, it was 30-45 minutes. If you did not make a reservation at least the day before, you will wait. 3. The pre-booking process did not support groups. We were not allowed to book an 18 & 14 year old in a room together. We could not link our reservation with that of our friends. Room or balconies do not connect. This created a lot of inconvenience when it came to booking things as a family or with our friends. 4. Lack of entertainment options and general poor timing of the entertainment. There was maybe one option for entertainment in the evening. No nightly movies available anywhere on the ship. Most entertainment options were something you had to pay for, or were geared towards selling you something. We were absolutely bored in the mornings and afternoons. 5. St. Petersburg Russia stop was a missed opportunity. If you did not book an expensive excursion with the Cruise Line, and you did not have a special Visa, you could not spend time at the port. The Visa issue was NOT communicated during booking and in all of the conversations my wife had with the agent. Read Less

Let me start with the positive - the ports were fantastic and our family enjoyed every minute visiting the beautiful cities. We found the disembarkation and embarkation process efficient considering the number of passengers on this ship. The two NCL excursions we participated in were a good value for the money and were very well run. Our independent tours through TJ Travel were fantastic. I agree with an earlier reviewer that this ship is designed for warm weather travel, making the interior public areas very crowded, so bring warm clothing so you can take advantage of the outdoor areas and activities. We were very fortunate and had beautiful weather the entire trip. It was hit or miss with staff overall, some were friendly but most seemed to be going through the motions and giving their minimum effort to engage with guests. Our room steward did his job, but made sure we knew when he was off the clock, which we thought was odd since the only thing we asked him for were some extra towels. Our issue is with the overall cleanliness, food handling and sanitation practices aboard this ship and is the main reason we will never sail with NCL again. I understand staff can only do so much, but sanitation practices are critical aboard a ship - especially one of this size. Public areas including the railings and elevators were not wiped down and sanitized during the cruise; by the end of the cruise, visible fingerprints and grime could easily be seen throughout the ship. Vomit in the public bathrooms was not cleaned promptly. Cafe' (buffet) staff did not practice or enforce basic sanitation practices (despite signage everywhere) other than "washy washy" and passengers reused dishes and routinely filled personal beverage cups right in front of staff and staff did nothing to stop them despite our comments and complaints. A large amount of passengers were coughing and sneezing openly throughout the ship, making proper sanitation practices all the more important. Our first specialty dining experience at Moderno went well and the food and service was very good. Our next dining experience at La Cucina was not so. The members of my family ordered different food items at La Cusina, but we all wound up with identical gastrointestinal distress afterward indicating whomever handled our food did not follow basic food sanitation practices; we all refused to attend our last pre-paid dining experience at Cagney's for this reason. I have shared my experience with NCL, and can only hope that for the sake of future passengers they will review and improve the food handling and sanitation practices aboard this ship. Read Less

The reason we picked this cruise was because of the itinerary and the overnight stay in St Petersburg, Russia. We had over 10 cruises in the past 2 years with different cruise lines and have been cruising with Royal Caribbean most of the time, so we thought it would be nice to try Regal Princess for this Baltic/Scandinavia trip. This was a family cruise with my husband, our 2 young children, my mom, and my aunt. However, we were very disappointed with Regal Princess. The ship layout was similar to Disney Dream, so there was no wow factors, and no high ceilings in the Dining Room. The ship décor was pretty outdated and tacky. The service and food were overrated. We were used to RCI's Junior Suite, but Regal Princess' mini suite was smaller than RCI's regular balcony room, with no walk-in closet and very little storage space! The balcony & bathroom were very tiny. When we arrived, we were shocked by how dirty our room was! There were dusts on the vanity table, coffee table, night stands, bathroom countertop, bathtub, glass shelves. There were hair and dirt in the drawers. We found leftover food and drinks from the previous passengers in the mini fridge. My mom and my aunt's Balcony room was even worse. It had only 1 chair, as it didn't even fit a sofa! The Medallion didn't work on the 1st day, and this Medallion is overrated as well. We preferred the traditional Key Card which we could carry in our wallets, instead of wearing the metal piece (Medallion) like a pet. The apps were a joke. We needed to download quite a few apps, one for pre-cruise check in (Ocean Ready) and a few others during On-Board.... And the apps were not even that great. We didn't understand why couldn't they put everything into one single app? The variety of food at the Horizon Buffet was nice. During meal times (even dinner time!) and Sea Days, it was very hard to find a table. If the buffet was crowded during dinner time, it told you that the food at the dining room was horrible. The breakfast buffet was the same every morning, and the selection was fantastic! I love the smoked salmon. Lunch and dinner consisted of traditional American staples, Asian, Indian, European, and theme cuisine. We were disappointed that the desserts were mostly Americanized (way too sweet) in this Baltic sailing. Many cakes were too sweet to a point that we could swallow. We miss our Royal Caribbean desserts, which was more European style with less sugar and more delicate. We did like the Afternoon tea, as the English scones were as good as those at InterContinental Hotel HK. Dining room service was ok. On Day 1, when we arrived Concerto Dining Room for Traditional Dining but found out our assigned table was occupied by another party. So, it turned out Regal Princess made a mistake. No big deal, they seated us at another table temporarily that evening. The head waitress was awesome. The assistant waiter was friendly at the beginning, but once he found that we were there for only one evening, his attitude changed immediately. From then on, he didn't want to serve us, so the head waitress needed to work super hard, including taking orders, bringing out dishes, and cleaning up. We felt bad for her, so we gave her some tip after dinner. The next evening, they re-assigned us to Allegro Dining Room for the traditional dining, and the waiters were great, thoughtful, friendly, and professional. The quality was the food wasn't to our standard. The fish dishes were always dry and overcooked. The steak quality was bad. The mussels were tough. Food was too salty most of the time. There was one time that my daughter's salmon has turned bad due to poor food handling. The only evening that was excellent was on the 2nd Formal Night, with delicious Escargots that resembles those at the 5-star hotel, lobsters that was fresh, and quality prime rib that was perfectly prepared. We like the Afternoon Tea time (3pm to 4pm) at Allegro Dining Room. However, we had a horrible incident on Day 10. We were going to meet up my aunt for afternoon tea. My aunt arrived the dining room first, and we were 10 min late because we got lost in Deck 6. My aunt asked for a table for 6, but the manager didn't let her go in because the rest of the party wasn't there yet. My aunt was 71 years old and just had radiation treatments for her breast cancer, so she was very tired all the time. In addition, she didn't have lunch that day and was starving by 3pm. So she asked the manager if she could have a small table and eat by herself first, as she was very hungry. But the manager still insisted no, and had her wait out there. Once we arrived, the manager was shocked that my husband, my kids, and I could speak English fluently (we are Asian-Americans). Then, his attitude changed completely, and was super sweet to us and treated us like VIP (What a jerk!)! Throughout the afternoon tea, we were not very happy with this manager for not respecting his wait staff and treating them like slaves by screaming at them and commanding them like slaves. The waiters and waitress were very efficient though. They were very nice to our two young children. The scones, pastries, and mini sandwiches were amazing. The service at International Cafe was a hit or miss. The crew member who served us was very nice, but the one who served my aunt was horrible. She mistreated my aunt just because my aunt spoke broken English. Sabatini's was disappointing. The dishes, including the complimentary bread sticks, were mostly deep fried at some point during the cooking process. This was not how Italian cuisine supposed to be. The seafood dish that I had was overcooked and tasteless. The menu of this Sabatini's on Regal Princess was totally different from the Sabatini's locations on Land. The Fitness Center was small, but served my needs. The machines were so close next to each other that I could smell the sweat of the man on the elliptical next to me. Shopping was very limited, as we were expecting more name brand shops such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Coach, Cartier, and so on. The kids' club was one of the best, with very attentive staff and fun games & activities. Our kids (7 and 8 years old) had a blast! They looked forward to Sea Days, because they wanted to go to the kids' club. However, other than that, there wasn't really anything for them to do while on this ship. The photography team was the best of all! All of them were very helpful and very good at their profession. The photo quality was the best out of all the cruises that we have had! We purchased the pre-cruise package deal at $199, which came with all print and digital copies. We took almost 300 photos in total! The service on the ship was not up to standard. The crew members seemed to be unhappy, comparing to RCI. We even witnessed how the supervisors yelled at the crew members and called them names (e.g. "You stupid!") in front of the passengers. The Internet service was slow and unstable, even at the ports. It made it very challenging for us to work and conduct our business transactions and bank transactions during the evenings on board. We missed the Royal Caribbean's VOOM, which was the fastest internet service at sea, even in Europe. The excursions were amazing, which made our trip unforgettable, despite of the poor service and food on the cruise ship. We signed up the Discovery Exclusive tour in St Petersburg, where we could tour the palaces during the before and after hours, in order to avoid the crowds. At Catherine Place, we had an exclusive tour of the garden and the palace at night (after the palace was closed to the public), followed by the orchestra and Royal Dance performance in the grand Reception Room. The ball room was even more splendid at night, and the dancers in costumer brought you back in time. It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience which would last for a life time! Another thing that we did like about Princess Cruise is that it provided very informative and educational materials about all the ports and cities every evening. We wish that the other cruise lines could do the same thing too. In general, we loved our excursion tours offered by Princess Cruises (especially the Discovery Exclusive ones), but not the cruise ship itself. We didn't regret for sailing with Regal Princess, because we were all about trying different things (Hey, at least, we tried it!). However, we will definitely go back to Royal Caribbean, or try another cruise line, in the future, unless there is an itinerary that we liked very much and is offered by Princess Cruise only. This is a repositioning itinerary, with a unique combination of Norway and Iceland. The detour via Scotland was something I was less interested in, especially Inverness. The Getaway just came out of a 2-week upgrade in the dry dock, and there was still a new-carpet smell. The trip started off badly - due to some vague explanation of delayed supplies, we left Copenhagen 5 hours late, and because this time could not be made up we had a day at sea the next day rather than the planned first stop at Haugesund, Norway. There is no excuse for this bad planning, and the only compensation we got was $50 per cabin!!! On the way back, there was another unplanned day at sea - we made it almost to Inverness, but then the captain made a U-turn because he felt the wind was too strong for the narrow strait. In return he promised an early arrival in Edinburgh, but it too was a disaster - the ship anchored way out from port and because there were few tenders available there was a minimum of 2 hours wait to get to and from shore. An additional minor gripe - the vertical water slides were broken the whole trip. Food and entertainment were fine. Because of the cold weather the outdoor space was hardly used, making for crowded conditions indoor, esp. the atrium. The wait times at the sit-down restaurants were quite long - often 40 minutes to be seated, and 2 hours from ordering to desert. Read Less

We are veteran cruisers. This, from Copenhagen to Copenhagen was our 50th. We are brand loyal to NCL - this was our 25th cruise with them - our first on the Breakaway. If you are a non-smoker, there is a huge design flaw with this ship that may ruin your trip. They put the Casino on deck 7 in the middle of the boat and it has an open ceiling to the 8th floor and open to the 6th floor . Smoking is permitted any time the Casino is in operation. Every time you walk through the middle of the ship on floors 6, 7 or 8, you are walking through s haze of second-hand smoke. In 2018, with what we know about smoking, why would a cruise line cater to 5% of their passengers and penalize 95% of non-smokers? It gets worse. On deck 8 mid ship they build a very nice, open air Italian restaurant. It faces a very comfortable bar and lounge area. In the lounge area they built a CIGAR BAR. The knucklehead who did this thought they would solve any smoke issue by simply adding a door to the Cigar Bar - which is fine - as long as the door remains closed. Once it's opened, the cigar smoke fills the adjoining bar lounge and wafts over to the open air Italian restaurant. It's just silly. Lastly, next to the bar/lounge is a Rock n Roll band bar. When they play every evening, the thumping of their musical instruments and the vibration can be felt in the staterooms. We were on the same floor, HALF WAY DOWN THE SHIP IN ROOM #8746 and had to wait every night until the band quit at 11pm ... STAY AWAY FROM THE 8TH FLOOR! Before we booked, we didn't realize THE BREAKAWAY was designed exactly the same way as THE EPIC (and the GETAWAY). We'd already vowed never to travel on The Epic again for the reasons mentioned above regarding The Getaway - ALL THREE BOATS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. We really enjoy the after dinner entertainment on cruise ship. The Breakaway was the worst line-up of entertainment we'd experienced. Read Less

Wow, where do I start, What a terrible adventure for a first time cruiser. We didn't even get off to a good start, we were delayed in port an additional 12 hours on embarkation due to weather. Our first port of call, Warnemunde, Germany was cancelled because of rough seas, high winds and a narrow port! So we sailed on to Tallinn, Estonia, while this is a nice old town and well worth a single day tour, we ended up there for two days, this is not a two day tour town". There were flooding conditions in St. Petersburg which required they have the dam closed that allows entry into their port areas, so we arrived a day late. When we finally arrived in St. Petersburg we were the only cruise ship in port. This is the rules for disembarking in St. Petersburg according to our tour company: "This year port authorities have changed the rules: they are letting large cruise ships groups to disembark first and all private companies are allowed to meet their guests only 90 min after the ship’s arrival. However, and this is the most important, these rules apply only on the days when there are 5 or more cruise ships in port which is not the case on the date of your arrival. In other words, cruise lines do not have a right to prevent you from disembarkation." NCL forced us to delay until all their groups were off before allowing the non-NCL tours off the ship. Our two days in St. Petersburg were great well worth the trip to see, but again it went down hill. Since we were already a day and a half late we were also forced to skip Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm Sweden. Instead we cruised back to Copenhagen at a leisurely 15 knots to make it back in time. The ship can do better than 20 knots as an average so we slowed to make it back on time. We went on this cruise to see the Baltic area, not miss 3 of the 5 ports of call and spend most of the time on a ship the stank of cigarette smoke in the Casino area and had only mediocre cafeteria food at any of the restaurants. The service area was a nightmare, this was located in the main atrium, so the noise from everyone not in the long line was bad but add to that the shows going on at the little theater in the same area where they used microphones and speakers to out noise the people in that same area, the ship making announcements and the soft spoken service representatives, suffice it to say that it was rather difficult to conduct business while lip reading because you couldn't hear. The upper decks were closed 3 days due to high winds, so even going outside was difficult. Bottom line, NCL knows what the weather is like in late September but went ahead and booked this cruise (did I mention that there were no other cruise ships in St. Petersburg). I feel like I got ripped off so I went to the AA web site to write a review and I couldn't even do that because most of the drop down menus didn't work on the site and you couldn't enter the review without that info. I am pretty sure I will not be booking with NCL again. Read Less

We choose this cruise to explore Northern Europe. However, one of the major ports we were to stop at, Stockholm, we were not able to stop at. This meant instead of spending 1 night at sea, we spent 2. I have been on other cruise ships that could not make one of their scheduled stops, but they always made it up to us with another stop. Norwegian just failed to do this and offered no real explanation. When we asked for an explanation we were told for safety reasons. My question is if it was that unsafe why not just go back to Copenhagen rather than stay at sea for 2 days. There was very little entertainment on the ship and what they did have was poor at best. Other cruise ships I have been offered 2 shows per night. Norwegian offered shows at an extra charge. I never experienced that before. I scheduled our own excursions with a company called TJ Travel out of St Petersburg, Russia. They were excellent, best I ever had. I heard several passengers complain of the excursions sanctioned by Norwegian, especially the Berlin tour. Read Less

I chose this cruise through my travel agent who booked a large group cruise with friends. This was my first NCL cruise and I was disappointed in the ship. It was very crowded and the buffet was horrendous. I am used to Royal Caribbean whose ships are amazing. Other cruise lines don't use their space wisely like RCCL and have tiny public areas whereas RCCL has massive promenades with beautiful wide open public areas and beautiful multi-level lobbies. I have cruised RCCL, Carnival, Celebrity and now Norwegian and unfortunately Norwegian comes in last in ratings. Food in the dining rooms was not impressive at all. I found the food in the buffet better than in the dining rooms but the arrangement was horrible and you could barely move for the people. All of the complimentary restaurants had the same menu and the menu in the dining rooms was almost the same every night. The variety was horrible. Activities were VERY limited and very boring. On every other cruise I've been on the cruise directors are always very interactive with the guests in many activities such as deck parties, line dancing, etc. I never saw or heard from the cruise director unless we went to a show. There were no deck parties, no activities, nothing. There is a huge beautiful area on the back of the ship known as H2O which is a waste of space because there was not one activity back there. The Breakaway brochure and website advertised "dance the night away at H2O after a night at Bliss nightclub". We were looking very forward to activities at H2O but not ONE THING took place there. Very disappointing! My balcony room was VERY nice and immmaculate. My biggest complaint about cruise ships now (and they are all doing it) is how large public areas are walled off for elite guests only. The Haven looks like it encompasses a large Solarium pool area which is not available to "common" guests. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY ABSURD!! Stuff like this is why I am pulling away from cruising. This is not right. We were unable to dock in Sweden because of high winds which is understandable but I have been in this situation before and the other cruise lines always offered small perks for the disappointment such as a day of free internet usage, free drinks or free movies in the rooms. The Breakaway offered NOTHING. We even asked since we were out to sea could we have 30 minutes of free wifi and the answer was no. I have never experienced this on other cruise lines before. Also, it was announced that a new activity schedule was being printed once we knew we couldn't dock and this was a JOKE because there were NO activities other than the usual boring Bingo, etc. This is the FIRST time I have ever been bored to tears on a cruise and this was my 35th cruise. Every other cruise line has sail away parties with themed food of the port of call on the pool decks but the Breakaway had nothing, not even fun pool activities of any kind involving staff members. I am not impressed AT ALL with Norwegian. Read Less

we were a group of 38pax with most in state cabins and a few in Haven suite trying to enjoy the baltic cruise starting 4th July 2018 what was good: 1. large ship with loads of activities for the entire family 2. some staff are very good with hospitality 3. food is not healthy but good what can improve: 1. very limited healthy food options, like for example they don't have seeds for breakfast 2. hygiene in bad shape every time had to point cutlery wrapped in dirty napkins 3. bliss lounge on 11th July had Filipino DJ playing Indian songs on Indian night. The DJ did not have any clue of Indian songs, the DJ had a huge ego/attitude and was not willing to entertain Indians with suggestions for improvement. All the indians had no option but to enjoy on whatever was available. 4. no rules being followed, seen children in cigar lounge with adults smoking on the day of England/Croatia match. 5. server non-cuscsain people with low priority 6. $9.99 for iconcierge is a total waste as it does not function most of the times and will keep getting automatically logged out. 7. internet package is expensive and will get consumed without your knowledge...complaint and they will just say sorry bad luck?!? 8. Water is sold at $3 in a super cheap package or $6 normal. Choked for water you will shell out the price! 9. some staff attitude is very bad they just look at you like freebeeies on a ship!?! my suggestion don't waste your money...my last cruise prior to this was Sea Princes in Alaska...although not great it was definitely better than NCL. My last vacation was Sandals in Antigua and it was best value for my money! Read Less

Felt packed like sardines all the time! Way too crowded for me. Long waits for elevators, no place to sit for buffet meals. Ship boasts gluten free products and options, but are not fully trained in cross contamination. I have celiac and was sick from day 1, no matter where I are. You can preorder meals in the dining room, but it doesn’t do any Good when they are not actually gluten free. Nothing in the buffet is gluten free except fresh fruit. Workers do not change gloves consistently, prepare and use ingredients from shared sources and prep areas. 2/3 of workers looked st me crazy when I asked if certain menu items or dishes were gluten free. So very frustrating. Cabin steward was awful- forgot towels, wouldn’t makeup the room for days on end. Russian shore excursions were a rip off- felt taken advantage of. Overpriced with guides that took us to toutrist traps. Awful. Rooms were large and spacious. Outlet picture window was foggy and dirty, but it was better than nothing. Linens were smooth and beds were comfortable. Read Less

We found the itinerary for NCL breakaway in the baltics to be very interesting and as we had heard reasonable feedback about their "free-style" cruising, we booked their cruise starting 16th June on the breakaway from Copenhagen. Our overall experience was poor due to the low motivation level of staff and the consequent poor quality service which we experienced at every touch point in the ship - as well as poor processes with low flexibility that made every interaction with the ship- painful, long and usually unsatisfying. We are a family of four with 2 adults and 2 girls aged 11 and 6 and this was our second cruise as a family. Copenhagen cruise terminal is best accessed from the city center via taxi - we paid 220 DKK from danhostel in the city to the quay and on return to airport, paid about 380DKK. NCL tried to take 100 USD for 4 of us for the same transfer - avoid them. Taxis are not difficult to find if u don't mind a 5 minute wait as you exit. On embarkation day there was a 90 minute wait to board as the staff took very long to check people in. It would have been v easy to change the amount of time people spent waiting in a queue -as there were plenty of chairs available - but no - no one was thinking about the customer. They offered lime juice and water as you stood in a queue but would not think of letting people wait in seats rather than standing in a queue. The luggage however was waiting for us when we reached the cabin which was great. The ship has great infrastructure overall and cabins and public spaces are good quality. Kids club- splash - has weird timings. It operated from 1030 AM -1030 PM with closures from 12-2 and then 5-7 which means that you are either shuttling kids to and from splash most of the time and never get a reasonable stretch of time without bothering about what is happening to them. This was a big dampener for us as, one of the reasons we like to cruise, is that we get lots of couple time while the kids are engaged - and this did not happen with NCL. They also do not take kids for lunch/dinner. Post 2230 hours, there is a paid option to keep them till 0130 hours - which is okay if you want to use it. Garden cafe served good quality buffets throughout the day with reasonable variations in the menu and this was good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. However the 3 main dining rooms offered very little choice and after one meal there, it was all repetitive and boring. They offer simple 3 course meals and essentially had 70% of the menu fixed for the entire cruise with 30% changing day to day- but that was largely stuff you could have at the buffet that night or the previous one. The dessert selection was particularly poor except for the final night's dinner. Staff were largely disinterested - with the exception of one in Manhattan room on the final evening. Pools were decent and water slides and rope courses were good too - however, the crowd made each of these activities so tiresome that it took a lot of effort to force one to go. The rope course for example took 15 mins in a queue for 15 mins on the course (roughly)! Further, with so much of demand, the timings on these things seemed ridiculous..why would you not consider advancing the hours a bit so that people can access these services with some flexibility. So much for "free style cruising". Coming to entertainment, Russian folk show in SPB was good. The musical was average at best (it may have been good 10 years back but today, it cannot be above average) and burn the floor was OK. Given that the range of unpaid entertainment is poor, I did not get value from the cruise in terms of entertainment. Do not book NCL port excursions as they are 30-100% more expensive than similar ones offered locally in Baltics. As all the forums will advice you alla and SPB are very very good in this region and it is totally seamless and reliable in every single port (although we did not experience helsinki as breakaway cancelled the visit at the last minute - and SPB tours refunded us promptly). Communication from the bridge was patchy at best and left a lot to be "deciphered" by passengers. The cruise director was proactive with his communication however. We experienced several instances of poor quality service throughout the cruise but i must recount this - in stockholm, as the port of docking changed to nynashamn, NCL arranged a transfer to and from stockholm. We were supposed to board the shuttle back at 440pm and we reached to see a long queue - not only of people waiting to board but buses waiting to pick people up - after 20-25 minutes in the queue, I spoke to one of the girls from NCL to ask why this needed to be so - and she said that she had a process that she had to follow. At this time, the hotel director (his name was Nuk or Muk - I do not recall) who was standing around and watching this, came up to me and said "I am sorry for this - may i please have your cabin number and I will make sure to redress this issue".I shared my cabin number promptly. I did not ask for it, he did.. AND that was the last I heard from NCL on this. To me, this tells a story of how leadership is happy to mouth platitudes and then the rest of the staff follows suit and is the root cause which made this cruise a painful one for us. Our cabin steward did a poor job of cleaning mostly and looked sullen and spoke rudely with us - which was of course only when we could find him - which was not very often and usually took some 20-30 mins of trying over the phone. When asked about why we did not get our laundry back on Friday as was communicated when the laundry was taken, he said " i don't do the laundry here you know...". We did get the laundry on Saturday night and it was well done. The conversation and the bitterness it evokes, persists. Both my kids felt that Costa offered much better and engaging activities on board than what they experienced in NCL and that the facilitators in "splash club" were not engaging enough...we felt the overwhelming need to follow a process - with no concern for the customer - on display here too. My eleven year old summed up her experience as "I thought we were not supposed to get bored on cruises but I was often bored.". The disembarkation process was seamless and efficient - took no time at all. I would definitely not go on another cruise with NCL as things stand. Read Less

This was my 14th cruise with Princess, however it may be my last. Princess I always felt provided excellent quality at a reasonable price, but alas !! That is no longer the case. My last 2 cruises have been extremely disappointing both on the Regal, and Royal. The food is really bad, and unless you pay for the Sanctuary you can’t get away for a little peace and quiet. Ship is over crowded, anytime dining is a farce, dining room can’t hold everybody at once so unless you get there early you will have to wait. For some reason they only open one dining room for breakfast and that’s the Alegro which is the most difficult to get to. The food court is very poor, and people are pushing and so rude that I just gave up. Room service is pathetic poor choices. Entertainment was reasonable but not the best I have seen. Staff in dining room were sometimes so pushed that you basically get your food thrown on the table. The couch in our cabin smelled of body odor, the carpets were not clean, the drapes had stains. Sorry Princess but next cruise will most definitely be with some other cruise line. Read Less

We did this cruise primarily for the destinations -- Copenhagen, Tallinn, Stockholm, St Petersberg, Helsinki. The ports were nice and we had pretty good weather. My wife and I traveled with 4 kids ages 11, 9, 6, and 3. The kids enjoyed the adventure ocean for the most part. We have been on 10+ cruises with RCI - and the Serenade of the Seas is a very average ship. It's a bit older, and it shows. The fixtures in our room and around the ship are showing a lot of wear. The food was very average -- I was personally disappointed with the main dining room menu and food. I try to avoid the windjammer wherever possible -- the windjammer food is always really bad. This was our first time in a suite - which was nice to have the extra space in our room for the family. The highlight was that we had a Playstation in our room connected to our TV and the suite concierge let us pick out games to play - the kids loved that. The suite concierge was definitely helpful, and the concierge club was nice to go to. Free drinks and snacks. Internet on Serenade of the Seas is not very good at all. We had no internet connection in our rooms. When we did have internet connection it was very slow. We ended up cancelling it and requesting a refund because we couldn't connect to the wifi. The entertainment -- was really average - nothing particularly special. The only good show was the juggling act. Stockholm -- it was very sunny and the HOHO bus/boat pickup was 50 meters from the ship so that was very nice. Super fast 5 minute debarkation. Tallinn -- we had to pay €10 per person to get a bus ride into town -- but honestly the bus didn't take us very far, and we still had to walk a long ways. We ended up just walking back to the ship because we couldn't even find a bus shuttle to take us back. Tallinn is a beautiful old city and it was fun to walk along the cobble streets. Super fast 5 minute debarkation. St Petersberg -- getting off the boat and out of customs was a nightmare! It took us 90 minutes waiting in line at the Russian customs. We did an excursion through RCI so that we wouldn't have to get Russian visas -- full day van rental with guide excursion -- and it was a great tour that we could tell the driver the places we wanted to go. Helsinki -- it was rainy so not the best day, but the HOHO bus is right there when you get off the ship so that was very nice. Super fast 5 minute debarkation. Copenhagen -- we really enjoyed touring Copenhagen. We probably would not go again on this cruise and we probably won't cruise ever again with RCI - Royal Carribbean's service in our opinion has really gone down over the past 10 years since we started cruising with them. They have removed a lot of the "extra" things that use to make cruising with RCI special -- I'm sure to cut costs and make more profits as a company -- but it has really taken RCI to more of a budget cruise liner. Took a nine day cruise around the Baltic with the family. Were reluctant at first due to the expense and recent terrorist attacks in the countries we were visiting. Opted for deluxe accommodations in "The Haven", which wasn't all that great. Service was good, but almost too many visits to our room so felt like we didn't have much privacy. Had someone walk in several times while someone was showering so you have to constantly remember to push privacy button whenever someone is in the room. Difficult to do with family of 5. First stop was Germany which we couldn't get into until the next day due to weather. Then we had only a 1.2 day vs the full day we booked with an excursion that had to be cancelled. To add insult to injury, we had to wait over an hour to re-board the ship. I have never seen anything like it - a line longer than the ship and not single file. Unbelievable! Then we skipped our stop in Estonia also due to the Germany fiasco. Russia was fine but limited to tour lead excursions - no self guided without visa. Finland was interesting. Our next stop should have been Stockholm but that was changed to some random Swedish port. You then had to pay to ride an hour or so into Stockholm and back again. We opted for a local excursion but were told the night before that it was cancelled. All in all it was a lot of work to get the kids from Miami through London into Copenhagen and a night in a hotel then repeat on the way back. My concern is that the ships are getting so big that they are becoming more difficult to maneuver into some ports and local waterways. I know it sounds dire, but I would assume they would also eventually become terrorist targets with 4000 to 5000 people aboard. Read Less

I waited till the end of the cruise to file this review as I have never had such a bad experience on a cruise before like I did on this ship. First of all, we were informed a month in advance that our ship would not dock in Stockholm which required us having to find and pay for transportation and wasting valuable time to get to Stockholm. Secondly, we were not able to dock in Wandermunde on the 13th as planned due to high winds and strong current which resulted in a sea day and we are able to dock on the 14th at the expense of us missing Tallin, Estonia. How did they make up for it? By giving us to 1pm in Wandermunde which gave us no time to visit any of the surrounding cities. When we returned to the ship we were met by a very long line which took an hour and half to get inside the ship in the scorching sun. No water for their guests nor anyone to help, that is so unacceptable and petty. When we arrived in St. Petersburg, we heard an announcement that the ship had not been cleared by Russian authorities and that we were not allowed to exit the ship however upon further review we noticed that the passengers which had excursions through NCL were in fact disembarking. When we attempted to leave the ship for our scheduled excursion with an outside vendor, one of their employees detained us in the hallway and informed us that the passengers on an NCL paid excursion had priority over us. I was livid at the employee and informed her that we are paid passengers and also had an excursion with a tour guide waiting for us. I have never felt so unappreciated and insulted by their lack of empathy. PRO(S): Great selection at the buffet restaurant, great food at their for-fee restaurants and great PAID shows (lack of free entertainment except the Burn the Floor). Our balcony stateroom was ample and the shower was larger than in other ships. I enjoyed my unlimited beverage package very much however the waiters are not as nice when they see these cards. The sports deck is good however most times it was not operational due to high winds Read Less

The staff were the best part of the cruise, very friendly and helpful. Food was great. We did all of our own trips into town except for Russia where we had to purchase a Shore Excursion to get off the boat. We purchased a 4 hour excursion that was suppose to allow us to walk around town, however, Royal Caribbean totally screwed us, they only gave us 2 hours and 45 mins and 90 minutes of that was driving, so instead of 2 and a half hours in Russia, we had 1 hour, very unhappy about this and when we went to complain, they wouldn't let us speak to the shore excursion manager, only offered 30% discount, really, we will never be back in Russia, they should have refunded 100%!!! The buffet up on the Horizon Court was constantly under stock and some popular items were out daily. They ran out of water melon after three days at sea. We travelled with 2 other family members, all 65 years plus, all of us Platinum Members with Princess Cruises ( over 400 cruise days between us with Princess Cruises/PO) We shall never cruise with Princess Cruises again after this experience. All of these listed below had been reported at the time or a day or so later at Customer Services desk. 1) Shards of broken Muscle shell in Chowder, served in main restaurant. Dangerous to say the least. 2) Totally ignored at the Platinum Members Cocktail Party. No drinks or canapes offered after 20 minutes, despites 5 different requests to waiters and junior officiers. Thanks for the invite Commodore. 3) One and a half hour wait for US Immigration clearance. Management and Officers abandoned their own queuing system (numbers and times pre allocated day before), very quickly for it to decline into chaos. The staff tried to blame their own mismanagement onto the Immigration officials, which was totally untrue. They only needed to stick to their own queuing system. Dare I say it, the American passport holders had a very small queue whilst the non American line was half the length of a very large ship. 4) Poor clearing of plates in the cafeteria during meals. No tables set at busy times hard to get hold of knives and forks. 5) 30 minute wait for poached eggs at breakfast in main restaurant 6) 30 minute wait for burgers at lunch time in main restaurant 7) Entertainment really poor. 4 main singers in ships group, very average and not suited to show songs they tried to sings. Music director allowed drummer to drown out much of the music anyway. 8) three quarters of an hour of one performer (singer/comic/mime/musician etc) is too much and boring. Also the Cruise director adding his quarter of an hour did not help. He was dire. 9) Crew members at gangways not directing passengers correctly, leading to unnecessary walking for some unfit passengers was v poor. 10) Cork broken in bottle by waiter at specialty Crown Grill and wanted to serve wine despite his error. 11) 2 complaints delivered to Customer Services well before disembarkation, not dealt with. I still await a response from Princess Cruises. We have been dealt with as if we don't exist or matter to Princess Cruises. Well from now on we don't exist to them, we shall never return to sail with Princess Cruises. farewell from 4 platinum Members Read Less
