Let me start with the positive - the ports were fantastic and our family enjoyed every minute visiting the beautiful cities. We found the disembarkation and embarkation process efficient considering the number of passengers on this ship. The two NCL excursions we participated in were a good value for the money and were very well run. Our independent tours through TJ Travel were fantastic. I agree with an earlier reviewer that this ship is designed for warm weather travel, making the interior public areas very crowded, so bring warm clothing so you can take advantage of the outdoor areas and activities. We were very fortunate and had beautiful weather the entire trip. It was hit or miss with staff overall, some were friendly but most seemed to be going through the motions and giving their minimum effort to engage with guests. Our room steward did his job, but made sure we knew when he was off the clock, which we thought was odd since the only thing we asked him for were some extra towels. Our issue is with the overall cleanliness, food handling and sanitation practices aboard this ship and is the main reason we will never sail with NCL again. I understand staff can only do so much, but sanitation practices are critical aboard a ship - especially one of this size. Public areas including the railings and elevators were not wiped down and sanitized during the cruise; by the end of the cruise, visible fingerprints and grime could easily be seen throughout the ship. Vomit in the public bathrooms was not cleaned promptly. Cafe' (buffet) staff did not practice or enforce basic sanitation practices (despite signage everywhere) other than "washy washy" and passengers reused dishes and routinely filled personal beverage cups right in front of staff and staff did nothing to stop them despite our comments and complaints. A large amount of passengers were coughing and sneezing openly throughout the ship, making proper sanitation practices all the more important. Our first specialty dining experience at Moderno went well and the food and service was very good. Our next dining experience at La Cucina was not so. The members of my family ordered different food items at La Cusina, but we all wound up with identical gastrointestinal distress afterward indicating whomever handled our food did not follow basic food sanitation practices; we all refused to attend our last pre-paid dining experience at Cagney's for this reason. I have shared my experience with NCL, and can only hope that for the sake of future passengers they will review and improve the food handling and sanitation practices aboard this ship. Read Less

We did this cruise because we'd never been in the Baltic before. We've sailed with Princess before with mixed results and this trip was par for the course. The destinations were excellent. (St. Petersburg was the surprise disappointment, Talinn and Warnemünde was outstanding!) Embarkation and disembarkation in Copenhagen was really easy. Actually, with the medallion, getting on and off at all the ports was easier than we expected. One of the problems we had was room size. There were four of us, and once the upper bunks were lowered at night, moving around the room was awkward and difficult. Also, because there were four of us, we couldn't push the bottom beds together. I'm pretty tall and my wife is pretty short and with a double bed it works out. This trip my feet were dangling off the end and the mattress was just wide enough for my shoulders. Ugh. We took advantage of the Elemis Spa Enclave, a room that has a large soaking pool, some steam rooms and heated seats. We went there almost every day and felt that it was worth every penny. We were pleased that we had the place mostly to ourselves for the duration of the trip. We had a lot of fun. We like exploring on our own, so we didn't do any of the Princess Excursions but we did make arrangements for an SPB tour on our own for St. Petersburg because the only way to see Russia without a visa is through a tour. The food was pretty standard, both in the main dining room and the buffet. Not amazing, but not terrible, and even on an eleven day cruise, they kept the menus varied enough so we didn't feel like we were eating the same stuff over and over. One complaint was the soup; the thick soups (jambalaya, albondigas, etc.) tasted like they used the same base and just swapped ingredients, while the clear soups (miso, chicken noodle, etc.) were really, really salty. And that's all I've got. I'd recommend it. Read Less

The reason we picked this cruise was because of the itinerary and the overnight stay in St Petersburg, Russia. We had over 10 cruises in the past 2 years with different cruise lines and have been cruising with Royal Caribbean most of the time, so we thought it would be nice to try Regal Princess for this Baltic/Scandinavia trip. This was a family cruise with my husband, our 2 young children, my mom, and my aunt. However, we were very disappointed with Regal Princess. The ship layout was similar to Disney Dream, so there was no wow factors, and no high ceilings in the Dining Room. The ship décor was pretty outdated and tacky. The service and food were overrated. We were used to RCI's Junior Suite, but Regal Princess' mini suite was smaller than RCI's regular balcony room, with no walk-in closet and very little storage space! The balcony & bathroom were very tiny. When we arrived, we were shocked by how dirty our room was! There were dusts on the vanity table, coffee table, night stands, bathroom countertop, bathtub, glass shelves. There were hair and dirt in the drawers. We found leftover food and drinks from the previous passengers in the mini fridge. My mom and my aunt's Balcony room was even worse. It had only 1 chair, as it didn't even fit a sofa! The Medallion didn't work on the 1st day, and this Medallion is overrated as well. We preferred the traditional Key Card which we could carry in our wallets, instead of wearing the metal piece (Medallion) like a pet. The apps were a joke. We needed to download quite a few apps, one for pre-cruise check in (Ocean Ready) and a few others during On-Board.... And the apps were not even that great. We didn't understand why couldn't they put everything into one single app? The variety of food at the Horizon Buffet was nice. During meal times (even dinner time!) and Sea Days, it was very hard to find a table. If the buffet was crowded during dinner time, it told you that the food at the dining room was horrible. The breakfast buffet was the same every morning, and the selection was fantastic! I love the smoked salmon. Lunch and dinner consisted of traditional American staples, Asian, Indian, European, and theme cuisine. We were disappointed that the desserts were mostly Americanized (way too sweet) in this Baltic sailing. Many cakes were too sweet to a point that we could swallow. We miss our Royal Caribbean desserts, which was more European style with less sugar and more delicate. We did like the Afternoon tea, as the English scones were as good as those at InterContinental Hotel HK. Dining room service was ok. On Day 1, when we arrived Concerto Dining Room for Traditional Dining but found out our assigned table was occupied by another party. So, it turned out Regal Princess made a mistake. No big deal, they seated us at another table temporarily that evening. The head waitress was awesome. The assistant waiter was friendly at the beginning, but once he found that we were there for only one evening, his attitude changed immediately. From then on, he didn't want to serve us, so the head waitress needed to work super hard, including taking orders, bringing out dishes, and cleaning up. We felt bad for her, so we gave her some tip after dinner. The next evening, they re-assigned us to Allegro Dining Room for the traditional dining, and the waiters were great, thoughtful, friendly, and professional. The quality was the food wasn't to our standard. The fish dishes were always dry and overcooked. The steak quality was bad. The mussels were tough. Food was too salty most of the time. There was one time that my daughter's salmon has turned bad due to poor food handling. The only evening that was excellent was on the 2nd Formal Night, with delicious Escargots that resembles those at the 5-star hotel, lobsters that was fresh, and quality prime rib that was perfectly prepared. We like the Afternoon Tea time (3pm to 4pm) at Allegro Dining Room. However, we had a horrible incident on Day 10. We were going to meet up my aunt for afternoon tea. My aunt arrived the dining room first, and we were 10 min late because we got lost in Deck 6. My aunt asked for a table for 6, but the manager didn't let her go in because the rest of the party wasn't there yet. My aunt was 71 years old and just had radiation treatments for her breast cancer, so she was very tired all the time. In addition, she didn't have lunch that day and was starving by 3pm. So she asked the manager if she could have a small table and eat by herself first, as she was very hungry. But the manager still insisted no, and had her wait out there. Once we arrived, the manager was shocked that my husband, my kids, and I could speak English fluently (we are Asian-Americans). Then, his attitude changed completely, and was super sweet to us and treated us like VIP (What a jerk!)! Throughout the afternoon tea, we were not very happy with this manager for not respecting his wait staff and treating them like slaves by screaming at them and commanding them like slaves. The waiters and waitress were very efficient though. They were very nice to our two young children. The scones, pastries, and mini sandwiches were amazing. The service at International Cafe was a hit or miss. The crew member who served us was very nice, but the one who served my aunt was horrible. She mistreated my aunt just because my aunt spoke broken English. Sabatini's was disappointing. The dishes, including the complimentary bread sticks, were mostly deep fried at some point during the cooking process. This was not how Italian cuisine supposed to be. The seafood dish that I had was overcooked and tasteless. The menu of this Sabatini's on Regal Princess was totally different from the Sabatini's locations on Land. The Fitness Center was small, but served my needs. The machines were so close next to each other that I could smell the sweat of the man on the elliptical next to me. Shopping was very limited, as we were expecting more name brand shops such as Salvatore Ferragamo, Coach, Cartier, and so on. The kids' club was one of the best, with very attentive staff and fun games & activities. Our kids (7 and 8 years old) had a blast! They looked forward to Sea Days, because they wanted to go to the kids' club. However, other than that, there wasn't really anything for them to do while on this ship. The photography team was the best of all! All of them were very helpful and very good at their profession. The photo quality was the best out of all the cruises that we have had! We purchased the pre-cruise package deal at $199, which came with all print and digital copies. We took almost 300 photos in total! The service on the ship was not up to standard. The crew members seemed to be unhappy, comparing to RCI. We even witnessed how the supervisors yelled at the crew members and called them names (e.g. "You stupid!") in front of the passengers. The Internet service was slow and unstable, even at the ports. It made it very challenging for us to work and conduct our business transactions and bank transactions during the evenings on board. We missed the Royal Caribbean's VOOM, which was the fastest internet service at sea, even in Europe. The excursions were amazing, which made our trip unforgettable, despite of the poor service and food on the cruise ship. We signed up the Discovery Exclusive tour in St Petersburg, where we could tour the palaces during the before and after hours, in order to avoid the crowds. At Catherine Place, we had an exclusive tour of the garden and the palace at night (after the palace was closed to the public), followed by the orchestra and Royal Dance performance in the grand Reception Room. The ball room was even more splendid at night, and the dancers in costumer brought you back in time. It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience which would last for a life time! Another thing that we did like about Princess Cruise is that it provided very informative and educational materials about all the ports and cities every evening. We wish that the other cruise lines could do the same thing too. In general, we loved our excursion tours offered by Princess Cruises (especially the Discovery Exclusive ones), but not the cruise ship itself. We didn't regret for sailing with Regal Princess, because we were all about trying different things (Hey, at least, we tried it!). However, we will definitely go back to Royal Caribbean, or try another cruise line, in the future, unless there is an itinerary that we liked very much and is offered by Princess Cruise only. This is a repositioning itinerary, with a unique combination of Norway and Iceland. The detour via Scotland was something I was less interested in, especially Inverness. The Getaway just came out of a 2-week upgrade in the dry dock, and there was still a new-carpet smell. The trip started off badly - due to some vague explanation of delayed supplies, we left Copenhagen 5 hours late, and because this time could not be made up we had a day at sea the next day rather than the planned first stop at Haugesund, Norway. There is no excuse for this bad planning, and the only compensation we got was $50 per cabin!!! On the way back, there was another unplanned day at sea - we made it almost to Inverness, but then the captain made a U-turn because he felt the wind was too strong for the narrow strait. In return he promised an early arrival in Edinburgh, but it too was a disaster - the ship anchored way out from port and because there were few tenders available there was a minimum of 2 hours wait to get to and from shore. An additional minor gripe - the vertical water slides were broken the whole trip. Food and entertainment were fine. Because of the cold weather the outdoor space was hardly used, making for crowded conditions indoor, esp. the atrium. The wait times at the sit-down restaurants were quite long - often 40 minutes to be seated, and 2 hours from ordering to desert. Read Less

Our second cruise with Norwegian in eleven years has improved our opinion of this cruise line but still has many other areas of improvement when compare to Princess or Celebrity cruises. The most noticeable areas of improvement were the quality of the meals and the service provided by the crew workers (not the ship officers/supervisors). This was the first time we were on a ship with 4000 other passengers. We tried to avoid the buffet as it was a nightmare trying to get a table, food or walking with the plate(s) back to the table. There were 4 other restaurants included with long line ups. In the future we'll try to avoid ships with more than 3000 passengers. We had a midship mini suite and it was smaller than the regular rooms on other cruise lines. Although the ship was less than 5 years old the rooms were not fitted with USB ports or HDMI port on the TV to manage the media equipment. We could not find a lounge in the entire ship that was fitted for relaxation having a drink overlooking the outdoors. All we could find it was a few chairs on hallways or internal rooms. Logistically the ship was poorly managed in a few areas. On the first day the ship left port 5 hours late due to the poor loading of the provisions. As a result of that we did not stop on the first port in Norway. We did get a $50 refund per room to compensate us for their poor schedule adherence. Who would know that a few days later the captain decided not to stop at another port due to safety, claiming that it was too windy. Looking to the outdoors the water was calm (sea state 1) and almost no wind. We did not get any refund for that port. As it was we missed 25% of the ports included on this tour and the loss of booked tours on land. The port tendering was another nightmare and in one occasion over 600 people we were retained in the theater room for over two and a half hours before we could start boarding the tenders. The Taste restaurant had a very rude receptionist but nothing was done about it and everyday was the same thing. We stop going there. My conclusion for our future on Norwegian cruises is that we would have to read many excellent reviews before we could contemplate another cruise with them but definitely not with other 4000 passengers. Took sister and husband with us. As beginners, they were very satisfied with the overall experience. We are long-time Princess cruisers, and were quite happy overall. In particular, the entertainment was better than usual for this line, with an excellent cast and orchestra. Hearing Daniel Oliver sing at the piano was great, as we heard him some years ago on a different ship. Also appreciated was the absence of blaring music on the open deck. Dining room food was inferior to the buffet. After a bit of learning, I must say that the Medallion system is an improvement over the old card system. The ethnic mix was unusual for us, with 1100 Americans, 1200 Asian, and 1000 others, with clear differences in cultural behaviours. We were pleased to attend a private lunch with the captain and senior officers for the 40 passengers with the most Princess cruise days. Unfortunately, the weather was mostly overcast and drizzly. Our inside cabin seemed to have more space (especially storage) than the usual Princess. Read Less

We sailed the Nordic fjords from Kiel with our adult children. The cabins are quite OK, not a lot of space for storage, bit dark colors. Still cleaning twice a day, not really necessary for us. Very large ship, very crowded, specially because we had bad weather and everybody was searching inside convenient seating. There are many lifts, maneuvering through the ship is easy and quick. Going ashore quick every time, how ever long waiting times at the security check getting back on board. Food overall pretty good. The easy drinking package gives you cheap drinks of low quality for 30 euros/ day, overpriced!! Staff not more than average, some very rude (you have whole day, one European in a bar told us). Very disappointing, our cabin was again (!!) changed by MSC without informing us. We booked 3 cabins together, they ended up scattered over the ship. We won't book MSC again, they just change your cabin as they like to do.... Read Less

Great service from Viking during planning stages. Air departure had a problem due to equipment and weather. Viking was able to reroute us in about 20 minutes and we arrived in Copenhagen only about an hour later than originally scheduled. We spent a couple extra days in Copenhagen before our departure and really enjoyed the touring of the city. Boarding the Viking Sky went very smoothly and our cabin was just as described in the cruise brochure. Dining was a great experience with very attentive staff that provided excellent service throughout the cruise. The food choices for dinner were varied and delicious. Shore excursions, both included and those with extra costs, were excellent and informative. The tour guides provided incite into the local culture and history of the sights we were seeing. Overall our experience was excellent and we will definitely recommend Viking Ocean Cruises to our friends. We will be planning additional cruises on Viking. Thank you for such a great cruise. I chose this cruise because of the ports: departing from Copenhagen, then Stockholm, Tallin, st Petersburg, Helsinki, back to Copenhagen. Overall - Amazing location, very friendly cruise staff, great service and food, we were surprised by how swift embarkation at ports were. Just check in was a little long. We arrived CPH on day of embarkation at 7am. There was already cruise staff holding a sign asking if anyone has booked cruise transfer to port. Nonetheless , my group used public transportation to Oceankaj by train then bus 25/27. We spent about 1+ hour at check in counter, we were told that it is the first sail of the year, staff was still on training to the new system as happens that system was down. I completed online check in but staff can not locate record so we have to complete whole check in process again. Team did not collect passport from us at check in, which again create a little hassle when we are on board. Cruise staff has to come to us to collect it. Once we board, staff with yellow t shirt was at every floor to help answer questions and help people familiarise with the cruise. This is my 2nd cruise with RCI, serenade of the Seas is a smaller cruise then before (quantum class cruise) which means less people, and less crowded. Never very difficult to get table at Windjammer. Dinner at main dining room was fab. Good food and attentive service. Same table and wait staff everyday Remember to download their app if you need to know info in other language. My family benefited from using the app as info were listed in chinese for them. Not really long lines at customer service. Staff are much more friendly, Cruise Director David is always around, can feel that he cares about customers. The cruise is a little dated but well maintained. Lots of storage space. Our housekeeper Sean is amazing, always checking if we are ok. Great shows and always good music on board. Less entertainment facilities on board then quantum class cruise, but I did enjoy my ‘do nothing’ time. Amazing ports especially Stockholm. Hop on hop off bus was waiting right outside departure gate for travelers. Tallin is an easy port, within walking distance to old town. Helsinki ‘s port was a little far away from downtown. Even excursion staff is unsure which port cruise will use 2 days before arrival. Wrong info given at the leaflet distributed on board. We joined independent excursion at St Petersburg, we can only depart ship 90 min after docking time. Have to let those joined cruise shorex depart first. We traveled in smaller group and with early entry to Hermitage plus an additional subway ride. Overall good cruise experience again. I would recommend this cruise and route. Read Less

The cruise itinerary is very good. Got an opportunity to visit many countries. One set back is this cruise does not provide no charge sauna and steam room :( Staff is very friendly except the one from English Pub (not so good experience with the staff there). The excursion in St Petersburg,, Russia is excellent; very nice tour guides. Wish we could have another sea day to relax after Oslo instead of a sea day earlier. About the entertainment, the shows is so so compared to other cruise. The stand up comedian is so lame... not much to laugh off and enjoyment. Embarkation and Disembarkation are very easy, fast and nice service staff. Wish I can access steam room at no charge as the same as many other cruises that I have taken just like the last one on Ruby Princess. Overall, the cruise is just as good as I expected it to be. We did the Transatlantic Cruise previously on a May sailing and enjoyed it. This cruise was less enjoyable than the previous cruise. Activities were held in the Atrium which did not have room enough for the 3000+ people on the ship. Service in the restaurants has declined. Dinners took 2 hours to complete. Meals that were served in the complementary dining rooms were very basic with no WOW meals or desserts being served. Reservations were needed for many of the shows and events on board. Cabin steward did not make up the rooms promptly. Shore excursions could not accommodate the number of people travelling on the ship. There were no comfortable seats anywhere on board. Disembarkation was very unorganized. No buses were available for transfer to the airports and we had to stand outside on a cold, windy day for over 2 hours. There was no Norwegian attendant to let you know where to go for your bus transfer. This experience will really make us rethink taking another NCL cruise. Read Less

Transatlantic cruises are such a great value and this particular cruise visited 4 different ports after embarking in Copenhagen. Wonderful friendships are made during this 14 day cruise and we love the rest and relaxation during the final days of the cruise after some super excursions. Our best excursion was in Ponte Delgada and was arranged by Darlene through Cruise Critic.....be sure to check the excursions available with other Cruise Critic members for your trip....smaller groups, less expensive...lots of pluses over the excursions offered by the ship. We chose an outside cabin on deck 5 and were very pleased with it....lots of room, good location close to elevators and easy access when we left the ship and the various ports. The ship itself was very clean and the crew was wonderful. We wish we had taken advantage of the "free" drink package offered during our cruise. The hidden loophole is that you have to pay $280 for taxes and tips so it actually isn't "free". We aren't big drinkers so we passed. However, the cost of 2 average drinks on the ship averaged $22 which gets pricey on this long trip. Also didn't like the fact that you could earn free drinks in the casino with 1500 points....I reached the points and was told "only standard drinks....no kahlua and cream, no old fashioneds, no cosmos, etc.... house whiskey, vodka, gin with mixer only." Seemed rather "cheap" to me and a slap in the face. I'll avoid the casino next time. Read Less

We are veteran cruisers. This, from Copenhagen to Copenhagen was our 50th. We are brand loyal to NCL - this was our 25th cruise with them - our first on the Breakaway. If you are a non-smoker, there is a huge design flaw with this ship that may ruin your trip. They put the Casino on deck 7 in the middle of the boat and it has an open ceiling to the 8th floor and open to the 6th floor . Smoking is permitted any time the Casino is in operation. Every time you walk through the middle of the ship on floors 6, 7 or 8, you are walking through s haze of second-hand smoke. In 2018, with what we know about smoking, why would a cruise line cater to 5% of their passengers and penalize 95% of non-smokers? It gets worse. On deck 8 mid ship they build a very nice, open air Italian restaurant. It faces a very comfortable bar and lounge area. In the lounge area they built a CIGAR BAR. The knucklehead who did this thought they would solve any smoke issue by simply adding a door to the Cigar Bar - which is fine - as long as the door remains closed. Once it's opened, the cigar smoke fills the adjoining bar lounge and wafts over to the open air Italian restaurant. It's just silly. Lastly, next to the bar/lounge is a Rock n Roll band bar. When they play every evening, the thumping of their musical instruments and the vibration can be felt in the staterooms. We were on the same floor, HALF WAY DOWN THE SHIP IN ROOM #8746 and had to wait every night until the band quit at 11pm ... STAY AWAY FROM THE 8TH FLOOR! Before we booked, we didn't realize THE BREAKAWAY was designed exactly the same way as THE EPIC (and the GETAWAY). We'd already vowed never to travel on The Epic again for the reasons mentioned above regarding The Getaway - ALL THREE BOATS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. We really enjoy the after dinner entertainment on cruise ship. The Breakaway was the worst line-up of entertainment we'd experienced. Read Less

Tallin, Estonia on Wednesday as scheduled, overnighted in Tallin and extra day there because couldn't get to St Petersburg. Arrived in St Petersburg on Friday one day and 3 hours late. Lucky our tour operator made adjustments for us, but still missed one site because of arriving late. Saturday in St Petersburg. Was told because of the distance to cover, 2 day at sea Sunday and Monday, with no Helsinki, Finland or Nnynasham, Sweden. Food was just ok, not good but just tolerable -way too much pork and seafood on the menu, also little options if u want to eat healthier or you have other dietary restrictions. When asked about other options for food or making substitutions they were less than accommodating. Was told could go to buffet or another pay dining venue. Service in dining rooms was generally very slow and not attentive at all. If you want something (like coffee with ur dessert) u have to specifically ask for it. Morning complimentary room service was consistently late and one day did not arrive at all. The hangers in the closet would not stay on. Overall poor planning on ports/weather/wind. This was my wife and I's first time on NCL and we were not impressed. Burn the Floor and Rock of Ages shows were great. Breakaway seems like nice ship, but with no heated pool or heated water for waterslides not a single person did either of these activities. It might be a better ship in the Carribean??. Because of the height of the ship, it must sail aound the island and is too tall to go under the bridge between Denmark and Sweden. Embarkation and disembarkation went smooth enough. Long lines for passport check in Russia ( I would take a smaller ship next time) too many people on this one. Of the $184/pp in port/taxes NCL only reimbursed $44/pp in taxes on the onboard account. We do our own thing for shore excursions. Old town in Tallin is great. We had no complaints with our stateroom attendant. I realize one cannot control mother nature was this one just seemed like the worst planning of any cruise I have ever been on. No additional reimbursements beyond the $44 mentioned above. Definitely did not get what we planned on and paid for. Read Less

Booked this cruise two years ago for the itinerary, my party of eight traveled from Canada and USA for this once in a lifetime opportunity to see some parts of the world we only dreamed of visiting. We all arrived a couple of days ahead in Copenhagen and enjoyed the city pre-cruise. Boarding day I met a crew member in the check in terminal and during conversation he mentioned that they had bypassed Sweden on the two previous sailings... that started my anxiety which became a little more a few minutes later when on checking in were informed that we we not going to stop in Germany due to weather.. it came to my attention that this decision had already been mad 2-3 days prior on the previous cruise so the decision based on weather became questionable. So we get to Tallinn, Estonia on schedule and once back on board after our tour were informed that due to weather we were going to spend another night and day tied up in port taking us one day late into St Petersburg, Russia, no problem getting there and unfortunately we will be bypassing Helsinki, Finland and Nynasham, Sweden due to weather. While we cannot control the weather and it is best to be safe than sorry.. and also understanding the fine print when we signed up, I believe NCL should have offered some kind of compensation to its guests in the form of future cruise credits (they did refund the port charges). I called NCL guest relations at head office and the person on their end could only keep spewing a generic apology and ending with unfortunately ba, bla weather bla bla you signed bla bla.. NCL you won't be seeing me anytime soon. Ship:Sailed on the escape last year same layout .. Food: Buffet food .. boring.. same breakfast every day, had to really search for something interesting on other occasions for lunch and dinner. Main dining rooms,, food was good and bad hit and miss..speciality dining rooms Cagney's very good, La Cuchina very good.. Le Bistro not bad but not great.. Shows.. was disappointed with change in itenarary so I did not bother going to any shows.. My biggest peeve is with the use of the atrium lounge for the activities.. not big enough and always too crowded .. same on the Escape.. I came to the conclusion that it was because of the proximity to the Atrium bar and O'Sheehans bar above is why they have these nighttime activities in the atrium. Room: Spacious and well done with ample storage but smaller balcony. Read Less

I departed from Copenhagen, Denmark, on 9/21/2018 for my FIRST ever cruise. The itinerary included stops in Estonia, Finland, Germany, Russia and Sweden. Since I am a planner, I booked the trip over a year in advance due to the positive feedback I received from co-workers who had done the exact same cruise in the past. Throughout the course of the year, two ports changed from one city to others, which was fine, since I received advanced notice. Upon arriving to the port on the day I was set to disembark, I received a notice stating that Germany was no longer a part of the itinerary. Later on that day, I learned that passengers that were due to join the cruise in Germany were given notice and had to rush to Copenhagen to board the ship. They were given approximately 48 hours notice. Everyone else learned the day of. The ship didn't leave Copenhagen on 9/23, but rather stayed at the port due to weather as we were told, for another day. When we arrived to Estonia, we were told to be back on board by 4pm as we only had a day scheduled, but we ended up staying there for two days. We arrived in Russia a day later than scheduled and completely missed Finland and Sweden, again due to weather. Now, I am not here to complain about the weather, as we all know that is clearly out of everyone's control. My issue is with the lack of communication from NCL staff in a timely manner. If NCL made the call to cancel Germany two days prior to departure, I could have stayed in Copenhagen for another day rather than being stuck on the ship. This was the first time I have ever been on a cruise and I was sorely disappointed by being stuck on a ship for 5 days. There was absolutely nothing for me to do. Although they sent a newsletter with "events" I felt that some were geared towards certain age groups, that did not include mine. I was bored to death, and it was bad. I was so bored and disenchanted that I wanted to get off in Estonia and fly back home. I missed 60% of my cruise and that is time and money that I will not get back. Staff on board made it clear that the call to cancel ports was a corporate decision, and that the chance of any compensation was slim to none. The only silver lining was the staff. They were all amazing. I will NEVER go on an NCL cruise again. If I could get my money back, I would! Read Less

Wow, where do I start, What a terrible adventure for a first time cruiser. We didn't even get off to a good start, we were delayed in port an additional 12 hours on embarkation due to weather. Our first port of call, Warnemunde, Germany was cancelled because of rough seas, high winds and a narrow port! So we sailed on to Tallinn, Estonia, while this is a nice old town and well worth a single day tour, we ended up there for two days, this is not a two day tour town". There were flooding conditions in St. Petersburg which required they have the dam closed that allows entry into their port areas, so we arrived a day late. When we finally arrived in St. Petersburg we were the only cruise ship in port. This is the rules for disembarking in St. Petersburg according to our tour company: "This year port authorities have changed the rules: they are letting large cruise ships groups to disembark first and all private companies are allowed to meet their guests only 90 min after the ship’s arrival. However, and this is the most important, these rules apply only on the days when there are 5 or more cruise ships in port which is not the case on the date of your arrival. In other words, cruise lines do not have a right to prevent you from disembarkation." NCL forced us to delay until all their groups were off before allowing the non-NCL tours off the ship. Our two days in St. Petersburg were great well worth the trip to see, but again it went down hill. Since we were already a day and a half late we were also forced to skip Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm Sweden. Instead we cruised back to Copenhagen at a leisurely 15 knots to make it back in time. The ship can do better than 20 knots as an average so we slowed to make it back on time. We went on this cruise to see the Baltic area, not miss 3 of the 5 ports of call and spend most of the time on a ship the stank of cigarette smoke in the Casino area and had only mediocre cafeteria food at any of the restaurants. The service area was a nightmare, this was located in the main atrium, so the noise from everyone not in the long line was bad but add to that the shows going on at the little theater in the same area where they used microphones and speakers to out noise the people in that same area, the ship making announcements and the soft spoken service representatives, suffice it to say that it was rather difficult to conduct business while lip reading because you couldn't hear. The upper decks were closed 3 days due to high winds, so even going outside was difficult. Bottom line, NCL knows what the weather is like in late September but went ahead and booked this cruise (did I mention that there were no other cruise ships in St. Petersburg). I feel like I got ripped off so I went to the AA web site to write a review and I couldn't even do that because most of the drop down menus didn't work on the site and you couldn't enter the review without that info. I am pretty sure I will not be booking with NCL again. Read Less

This cruise should not have been scheduled in the first place. This was the only cruise ship that sailed in this time of the year unlike other cruise ship who were wised enough not to schedule due to unpredictable weather condition thus resulting to missing 3 ports. THREE!!!!!!!!!!!! NCL should know better! And NCL should have Plan B in place if incidents like these happens. Instead it was business as usual with no effort how to keep your passengers happy, entertained despite being on the ship more often than on shore. The entertainers where cheap and boring! I donot see the different between Taste and Savor specialty restaurants! They always have the same menu so what is the specialty with that!? To top it all, getting off the ship on arrival in Russia what a complete total chaos!!! As if this was their first time to dock in Russia! We were supposed to be out of Immigration area by 830am but instead we got out 1130am!!!! UNACCEPTABLE! This is my 2nd time with NCL and I have never been so tired of being bored! Why NCL Why?!!!!!!! So disappointed and will never sail NCL again! Would not even recommend NCL in a heartbeat! All the people I spoked to on the ship were totally disappointed! The only good thing about this experience were your Room Steward and Waiters and Waitresses. They were friendly and totally above and beyond customer service! Read Less

Chaos in itinerary. Bad servise. Terrible transparency and attitude. Weather was utilized as an excuse for cutting the ports by 60% while other companies were operating. Service was less than moderate dis embarkment at St Petersburg was chaotic followed by discrimination of passanger who did not use the ship excrusions. Nobody at the company headquarters was willing to pay attention to complaints. The senior crew and company ignored complaints and when answerin the complain letter it was very obvious that nobody went over it thoroughy. I have been cruising like 10 times never before i felt so mis treated. According with the circumstances the company should have apologized and offer som compensation. Pretending that every is ok when all was wrong and most passengers felt alike is notva solution. I certainly will not cruise again with NCL and i will make sure that all my social network will learn about our bad experience. Read Less

We choose this cruise to explore Northern Europe. However, one of the major ports we were to stop at, Stockholm, we were not able to stop at. This meant instead of spending 1 night at sea, we spent 2. I have been on other cruise ships that could not make one of their scheduled stops, but they always made it up to us with another stop. Norwegian just failed to do this and offered no real explanation. When we asked for an explanation we were told for safety reasons. My question is if it was that unsafe why not just go back to Copenhagen rather than stay at sea for 2 days. There was very little entertainment on the ship and what they did have was poor at best. Other cruise ships I have been offered 2 shows per night. Norwegian offered shows at an extra charge. I never experienced that before. I scheduled our own excursions with a company called TJ Travel out of St Petersburg, Russia. They were excellent, best I ever had. I heard several passengers complain of the excursions sanctioned by Norwegian, especially the Berlin tour. Read Less

My first transatlantic Cruise. I enjoyed the cruise from the stateroom, buffet, shows, and dinning experience (especially The Crown Grill). The ship was beautifully decorated. The decor was exceptional. I looked forward to afternoon tea everyday. I arranged excursions to make it back in time for tea. The medallion system worked great. The minute you got close to the door, it unlocked the door. Dining staff gave outstanding service, especially the staff under supervisor Herman. Every morning they remembered our favorite drinks and filled them without a request. My family and I met many interesting people from many different countries. We were disappointed the weather was so cold that we were unable to watch movies under the stars. However, the movies in the theaters and on the TV in our stateroom needed only popcorn and hot chocolate. Embarkation went well, but disembarkation was unpleasant. Waiting in the casino and finding our luggage was not a good experience. We barely made our flight. Although some of the problems was getting through TSA. I wish you offered smaller drink packages. We drink very little wine and occasionally sodas. The packages are too large and too expensive. I tend to order an occasional glass of wine and order soft drinks only on shore. Read Less

We were on several cruises before and we try to cruise with Norwegian Cruislines. We had a nice Cabin with a balcony on the 11th floor. Our Room attendant was very good and it looks like he always knew the right time to service the cabin. We booked in advance our dinners and shows so we did not have to stand in line to get our table... The Garden Cafe - All-Day- Buffet looks like a war zone ... hard to find a table for our party and it feels like going to the market with many people doing the same thing... We did all we could to avoid going there... We had our Breakfasts at the Savor Restaurant and when we did not have the special dining dinners we used the 3 restaurants Taste, Savor and the Manhattan room. We were happy to have our a-la-carte breakfast and the dinners. We enjoyed and loved Cagney's Steak House 3 times and twice La Cuccina Italian restaurant. The entertainment was fine but the Theater and other venues were not as we had on the other ships... Overall it was OK. We were disappointed being so close to Stockholm, Sweden but did not make it... We had plans and we arranged a nice tour with our friends living in Stockholm which left us disappointed. Instead we had 2 Sea Days... We've did cruise with the Norwegian Spirit and were very happy... We hope to be back on the NCL Spirit next year. On behalf of my family & friends, I wish to thank everyone on the Norwegian Breakaway team for their attention and good service... Thank you for having us. Read Less

I chose this cruise through my travel agent who booked a large group cruise with friends. This was my first NCL cruise and I was disappointed in the ship. It was very crowded and the buffet was horrendous. I am used to Royal Caribbean whose ships are amazing. Other cruise lines don't use their space wisely like RCCL and have tiny public areas whereas RCCL has massive promenades with beautiful wide open public areas and beautiful multi-level lobbies. I have cruised RCCL, Carnival, Celebrity and now Norwegian and unfortunately Norwegian comes in last in ratings. Food in the dining rooms was not impressive at all. I found the food in the buffet better than in the dining rooms but the arrangement was horrible and you could barely move for the people. All of the complimentary restaurants had the same menu and the menu in the dining rooms was almost the same every night. The variety was horrible. Activities were VERY limited and very boring. On every other cruise I've been on the cruise directors are always very interactive with the guests in many activities such as deck parties, line dancing, etc. I never saw or heard from the cruise director unless we went to a show. There were no deck parties, no activities, nothing. There is a huge beautiful area on the back of the ship known as H2O which is a waste of space because there was not one activity back there. The Breakaway brochure and website advertised "dance the night away at H2O after a night at Bliss nightclub". We were looking very forward to activities at H2O but not ONE THING took place there. Very disappointing! My balcony room was VERY nice and immmaculate. My biggest complaint about cruise ships now (and they are all doing it) is how large public areas are walled off for elite guests only. The Haven looks like it encompasses a large Solarium pool area which is not available to "common" guests. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY ABSURD!! Stuff like this is why I am pulling away from cruising. This is not right. We were unable to dock in Sweden because of high winds which is understandable but I have been in this situation before and the other cruise lines always offered small perks for the disappointment such as a day of free internet usage, free drinks or free movies in the rooms. The Breakaway offered NOTHING. We even asked since we were out to sea could we have 30 minutes of free wifi and the answer was no. I have never experienced this on other cruise lines before. Also, it was announced that a new activity schedule was being printed once we knew we couldn't dock and this was a JOKE because there were NO activities other than the usual boring Bingo, etc. This is the FIRST time I have ever been bored to tears on a cruise and this was my 35th cruise. Every other cruise line has sail away parties with themed food of the port of call on the pool decks but the Breakaway had nothing, not even fun pool activities of any kind involving staff members. I am not impressed AT ALL with Norwegian. Read Less
