While on a majestic fjords cruise and leaving Amsterdam we hit a foreign object on a initial inspection and short delay we had the all clear to carry on but never got to Norway, around half way the boat developed a mechanical vault so had to turn back. The cruise was eventually terminated and we went back to Amsterdam. We still enjoyed a full program of entertainment and everything else on board. They announced that we would be going back to tilbury by ferry They had already given us £25 each and a free bar fo one night but then told us we would get a full refund + free cruise of same duration anytime in the next 2 years or if we wanted a longer one they will deduct the value of this cruise We only lost one day of the whole trip it’s good to hear of a company doing the right thing with out having to spend hours complaining. We chose this cruise because it is easy to embark at Tilbury but sad to say we were very disappointed .Very poor communication skills with crew at all levels as they seemed to only speak or understand very little English as in the restaurant and bars only a few understood the food & drinks orders .As it was a long wait in the restaurant and when the meals arrived they were undercooked or only warm as we treated ourselves to steak in the grill it was very tough and worth the money as my partner sent her back the kitchen to the disgust of the chef & waiter . In the bars the glasses were often warm (one of my pet hates ) one evening in the dome we sent the drinks and my glass back where the barman became very irate and slammed the beer glass on the bar . The excursions were offer priced and badly organised as on the last one it should have been a steam train only to be replaced with an old diesel of which no explanation was offered .In Helsinki & Stockholm we were only allowed about 3/4 hours a shore a joke! .The entertainment was very poor lasting only 45 minuetes also the guest speakers on board were very amateurish as they seemed not to no what they were operating .The best thing was disembarkation at Tilbury please note there are much better cruise companies . OK, the cost and value are pretty good (World Cruise 2019), but its let down by two key things. Firstly the food. It varies between average to terrible and tends to be stodgy, swimming in gravy or sauce and usually over cooked. (Our table of 6 must have sent well over 30 meals back or not eaten in just 70 days.) Not forgetting that when avocado or anchovy appears on the menu! All you get is something from a tube or powdered anchovy??(Dont try and find it on the plate or in the flavour). Secondly the service many of the drinks waiters/waitresses are offhand and rude as were the shore crew. The dining staff are very friendly but lack support to help solve problems when they arise (Fusion restaurant being an exception and very good), the cabin staff are a shining light (along with the little contact you may get with engineering type staff. For the rest the cruise is comfortable with reasonable sized cabins and comfortable beds, not lush, but comfortable. The entertainment team are very good and put on a wide variety of shows that are choreographed on board. Lee Cooper, Holly and the team take a bow. I guess the frustrating thing about this cruise is that it easily could be better, without becoming an expensive overkill. The boat is as big as you need, just fix the food! We chose this cruise because it was good value at Xmas. Everywhere was festively and attractively decorated. The staff were welcoming and helpful. The food was plentiful and well served. ( it can get busy in the buffet restaurant at peak times. The entertainers were young and personable and the shows were colouful with good dancing routines and songs. There were several knowledgeable speakers who were interesting to listen to during our many sea days. There was a range of daily physical activities and quizzes. There is a small spa area on deck 2 with heated tiled loungers and a steam room. It was too chilly to use the pool but people used the open decked loungers whenever they saw some sun. There were even some open air bbqs on deck. The itinerary was good but disrupted by the cancellation of Gibraltar ( propeller damage from a German pilot on the previous cruise) and the rough seas when at anchor in Funchal. It was disappointing to have to leave Amsterdam at 3 .30 just when the Xmas lights were beginning to shine especially as we had 5 sea days following that port. There were lots tours to select from and some presentations given beforehand. In order to keep costs down we were independent travellers in Funchal, and Lisbon. There was an excellent walking tour with a local guide in Amsterdam. My main issue was the daily Captain’s lunchtime info giving was very difficult to understand because of the language accent and the real lack of communication and leadership when 650 cruise passengers were stranded on the quay at Lisbon when the ship tenders could not attach themselves to the ship in rough seas. People spent hours in the wet, cold and dark either standing on the quayside or huddled in the bouncing tenders really anxious about how they could returnto the ship. The crew were excellent in catching the passengers thrown individually from their tenders but there was a real danger of sickness and injury. Some passengers did not manage to return til very late and the crew had the tricky task of reattaching tenders after midnight in strong winds. A real damper on what was a formal dinner and midnight fireworks in the bay. Read Less

The day before we sailed we learnt that the ship was being taken to Dover for essential maintenance work, therefore we parked the car at Tilbury and then travelled to Dover by coach. On arrival in Amsterdam we were told that the work hadn’t been completed in Dover and would have to be done in Tenerife so we would be missing out our stop in Gibraltar. This meant 5 and a half days at sea. During that time activities such as crafting, knit and natter or lectures, were not at all to our taste so the time went very slowly. Service in the main restaurant was abysmal, including Christmas dinner, which took nearly 2 hours. The staff in the main dining room were so busy with it being 2 sittings for dinner that regularly there was a long wait between courses. I had a glass of wine with dinner which was served as half a glass and then it was a job to catch the waiters eye for another half later. (We were all inclusive). Usually on cruises I sit with my hand over the glass to prevent the wine waiter doing a refill, not on this cruise. One evening we went to the Grill (extra charge) and had rib eye steak, which was very near inedible with sinews. I ordered medium rare and my wife ordered medium. When my wife cut into hers it was clear that we had been given the wrong ones, so they just swapped our plates over, complete with peppercorn sauce over mine, which my wife cannot eat. For this error we were offered a glass of sparkling wine each. For the last 3 evenings we ate in the Bistro, where the choice was very limited. We found it amazing how many different ways they could make bread and butter pudding to use up the stale bread... Service during the day for a drink (around the Atrium) took ages and I went and ordered it in Hemingway’s where I was told there would be quite a wait as we were sitting overlooking the Atrium on Deck 6. There was very limited entertainment in the evening apart from the main shows in the Palladium and with first sitting dinner being 5.45pm and the first show (which we would have preferred) starting at 7.15pm there was no chance of getting to that one and an empty gap to fill before the next show, so we often gave up. Most disturbing thing was being anchored in the bay at Funchal and tendering to the shore, when other ships much nearer to the shore did not put down tenders due to the rough conditions. It was decided to cancel tendering at 1pm but by then 600 people were still to be returned to the ship. Conditions got worse, with tenders bashing into the ships platform and the last passengers on board at 10pm or later while the ship was held on a line at each end by tugs. Should never have happened. Our cabin was so hot, like a sauna all the time and the public rooms of the ship were cold. So by the middle of the second week quite a few people, including us, had coughs and colds. The only positive note our cabin was a good size and the wonderful friendly service from our cabin steward. Disembarkation a shambles, probably everyone just wanted to get off! Our Christmas is on Sunday, as we missed the real one. Read Less

Ship broken down in Dover so not in dock in Tilbury, so we had to be bused to Dover, given a bottle of water apple & crisps for lunch. After a two hour drive we arrived in Dover getting on the ship went well, we were told that the self service was closed ( but found out later it was open) there should have been a kettle in our cabin that was missing so no warm cuppa. First evening meal in the restaurant was not very good, also we ask for a table for 6/8 given one for 4. Then found out the ship had not been repaired so had to miss Gibraltar so that meant 5 day's at sea with not a lot to do. Ship repaired in Tenerife. 31/12 arrived in Madeira> My husband went on a excursion I didn't because it was a tender. I am disabled (having a bad day) so I stayed on board. He left me at 8.45 I next saw him at 7.15 because they stopped the tenders for safety reasons, leaving hundreds on shore either sat on the tenders or stood out in the rain, last people got back around 11.30 all missing their Grand New Years Eve meal as we did. A lot of people missed the fireworks at midnight as they were either too ill or too tired to stay up. We did see the fireworks were spectacular, they were what nearly all the passages had gone to see. The disembarkation was a joke we had crew members with cases or large bags pushing passed paying passengers to get of the ship, maybe like a lot of the passengers they too couldn't wait to get off. After showing our sea passes there were new staff walking towards us to get on the same way as everyone was getting off. They were so rude bearing in mind their ages compared to the passengers, who were mainly OAP's or disabled like myself. Read Less

We chose this ship as we sailed in her 18 months previously and apart from very average food in the Waterfront Restaurant we had a good time. We were in need of some serious R&R after a very difficult year and the children were happy to go elsewhere. We therefore booked the courier service through SAGA to take us to Tilbury & back. The day before we left the embarkation was changed to Dover where extra repairs had to be made apparently although why was never mentioned by the captain or the crew. Embarkation was fast and efficient but from there it all went downhill. The excursion to Amsterdam canals was organised during the daylight hours and the famous lights were not evident. A waste of time & money. As soon as we left there we were informed that the scheduled stop in Gibraltar had been cancelled as the repairs had not been effected in Dover. So after 5.5 days at sea suffering with very mediocre food in the main restaurant and indifferent entertainment in the Palladium we arrived in Tenerife earlier than stated. The excursion booked was thoroughly dangerous on roads unsuitable for big coaches and little or no safety barriers on bends with 400' or more drops. So decided to cancel rest of excursions but no refund given and money taken to cancel! Best was New Years' firework display but some 600 or so very bruised and battered passengers may not agree after suffering appalling conditions tendering to the mainland in rough seas when no other cruise liners were offering this and then being left for hours to fend for themselves when the weather worsened. All in all we felt that there was a lack of care for the passengers exhibited by the officers and heads of departments, although the staff on the ground so to speak were friendly and helpful. The wine cellar choice was little short of abysmal. If you drink dry wine only you will be ok as that is all they have and the spirit measures are extremely small. Luckily we took out a VIP package and came out on top. The best drinks were definitely the cocktails and the lovely coffees. Food was poor except for the buffet on the top but not easy to get drinks up there. The whole ethos of Christmas was missing. Embarkation was a total shambles and as there was a DOA in one of the cabins even more delay ensued with a free for all at the exit to the dock building. Would we go again.....answer no as it appears the shipping line is more interested in making money at all costs than looking after the comfort of it's passengers and our experience was worse than the previous trip. This really was a very good cruise certainly for this time of the year getting away to a bit of warmer weather , the staff laid on lots of entertainment with singing carols and everyone joined in ,also many other things were going on throughout the day , cocktails go down very well on the cruise also plenty of waiters serving drinks throughout the day and evening to save us getting up to get a drink at the bar,I am not sure where CMV get so many friendly staff but the staff really did make the cruise such a pleasure , nothing was to much trouble also looking at a closer issue the ship was spotlessly clean , on a couple of down sides we missed Gibraltar due to an issue with the propeller which got sorted in the Canaries the other was Maderia which had choppy waters for the tender boats going to shore , this made some not to well but maybe they should of stayed on the ship , i really wanted to see Maderia and as i don`t get sea sick it wasn`t a problem , the only main problem was docking the tenders coming back the swell was up a bit more and did cause an issue trying to get back but saying that I think all got back onboard to watch the fireworks which were fantastic , would i do this cruise again at Christmas , `Of Course ` , it is a great ship with great staff . In December 2018 we went on a Christmas Canary Islands and Madeira cruise on the CMV Columbus. We booked with Saga, who offer a door to door service as standard. The cruise was to be from Tilbury to Tilbury but due to a technical problem with the ship we sailed from Dover and missed Gibraltar as the ship had to go to Tenerife for repairs to one of its propellers. We were given £25 each as compensation for missing Gibraltar. The Ship The Columbus is a mid sized ship and although a bit old was in good condition. As the weather was not good, except in the Canaries, there was no going on deck due to high winds and it was quite cold. That put pressure on the seating situation so at times it was very hard to get somewhere to sit. Inside some of the public places could have been warmer. Most of the passengers were very friendly and we had many a good conversation during our cruise. Apart from Christmas the music played in the public areas was more for teenagers that the older crowd on board. The Cabin We were in cabin 10156 and it was bigger than most ships with two upper bunks protruding from the wall, which could get in the way. The lighting wasn’t bright enough. There was a big double bed, well two singles pushed together, but there was two single duvet covers on there as the double duvets they have are too small, or so our cabin steward told us. I went to reception regarding this and was asked to write a note to the Head Housekeeper and within a few hours we had a double duvet. There was only a bedside light on one side with the one on the other side at the other end of a dressing table so couldn’t be reached from the bed. There was a kettle with Whittards tea and Douwe Egberts coffee. Because I pre paid the gratuities there was a bottle of Red Merlot on the table. There was a small armchair and a desk chair. There was ample space for hanging our clothes and drawers for other items. There was a fridge and a safe. There was a small flat screen television but it was placed left of the bed so it was hard to watch it from the bed. There was only one socket, which had the kettle plugged into it, and that had to be used for all our charging. Luckily we brought the extension. The bathroom was small but the shower was big and again the lighting was inadequate. There was plenty of storage in the bathroom. The shower head was fixed and the larger shower cubicle helped. There was a soap dispenser in the shower and two small bars of soap on the washbasin and that was it. Luckily we brought some of our own. During sailing the cabin walls creaked quite a bit and others said the same thing. Our cabin steward was called Ashveer and he was very good. He is from Mauritius and we had some good laughs with him. The food We eat in the MDR a few times, the service in there was good, but as we are fond of spicy food we kept mainly to the buffet as they had a much better selection. The food was well cooked and hot. The afternoon tea was especially good with various rolls and lots of delicious cakes and those very nice scones that people keep writing about. Getting a table in the buffet could be difficult at times, especially at breakfast, but we managed. The friendliness of the other passengers made that a bit easier. They put on a good show for Christmas but we missed the New Years dinner due to a problem with getting back to the ship by Tender in Funchal. The sea became very rough after we got on land so we were delayed for many hours before we could get back and even that was quite hazardous. We were back for the midnight fireworks and that was spectacular. Entertainment The theatre is very badly laid out with seating being mainly on the flat and with some of the back seats lower than the ones at the front. There is a balcony but there is a metal bar running all round it and that gets in the way and the glass panel reflects a lot. There are also several large columns which get in the way. The Cruise Director Ian Bagshaw put on a magic show as he was at one time a professional in that form of entertainment. He was around the ship all day and stopped for a chat on occasions. There were two visiting comedians, Christopher Gee, who is an impressionist and very funny and Les Bryan, once of the Marauders in the early sixties and the Comedians on television. The resident show team put on a variety of shows, even a Pantomime, and in the main were quite good. One problem was that the noise of the music drowned out the singers. That is something that could easily have been remedied. Their final show was a tour around the worlds music culminating in music from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England. They brought the house down. The shows were at 1915 and 2100 each evening. There were various music shows in some of the bars throughout the day and evening. There was a game show in the Dome nightclub most evenings but not until 2215. Much too late. There was a disco up there after that. We didn't take any ships shore excursions as we had been to all the places visited except Lanzarote. The crew were magnificent, always smiling and helpful. There are 27 different nationalities working on board. As I write this review a letter has arrived from CMV with a cheque for £100, £50 each, and a 20% future cruise discount if booked by March 31st. This was in relation to our problem with the Tenders in Funchal. That was a surprise. We would not take this cruise again due to the cold weather. It spoiled the cruise as we had to spend most of our time indoors. Read Less

I chose this ship because I wanted to go to a German Christmas market. Prices were good on board, very clean, staff were excellent and entertainment was brilliant. Food was good with lots of choices. There is only one downfall, the ship in parts were too cold. In the buffet style restaurant it was so cold you had to wear your coat to eat. One waiter showed me his hands and they were like ice, little bit inhuman for those working in this restaurant. Everyone was complaining about it. At one stage they had the air conditioning on. We also had to complain about our cabin but were told where the control was and then it started to get warmer. The lifts leave a lot to be desired on the aft side. One lift was stuck on 11 for 2 days so the wait for lifts was not good. Service was excellent in all the bars and restaurants. Food in the waterfront restaurant was beautifully presented and tasty. Food in the buffet restaurant was equally as good and well presented but it was too cold in there to enjoy your food. The breakfast was excellent with lots of choice in both restaurants. There was afternoon tea in the buffet restaurant which was really good. Bar prices were excellent, cocktails for only 4 euros 75. They were delicious. Tea and coffee making facilities in your cabin and there was 24 hour tea and coffee machines in the buffet restaurant. On gala night the waiters did a dance for us which was amazing. In connexions bar there was a duo singing who was fantastic. In the other 2 bars you could enjoy a pianist and violin playing and guitar music. There was a different show every night and they were fantastic. Such talented singers and dancers. Plenty of things going on during the day, quizzes, games, bingo etc The ship is very big and the decor is beautiful. There are 2 shops on board selling duty free. There is no shop to buy sweets, drinks or other essentials. There were excursions available but this involved too much walking. Amsterdam town centre was literally 15 minute walk. In Hamburg the cruise ship laid on shuttle coaches which was an excellent service. Embarkation and disembarkation was so smooth and well ordered. I would definitely go on this cruise ship again but hopefully in summer Read Less

Chose this cruise to celebrate my retirement and our past memories of Germany, Netherlands and Belgium. Boarding was very good, fast and efficient. Cabin good. We chose mid ship and it was a very quiet cabin. Lifeboat drill was chaotic to say the least. We were all called to the theatre, checked off and then sent out to the muster point on deck. There chaos ruled. Checking people off again and then proceeded to demonstrate the life jacket ( why couldn’t this have been done in the theatre). We were on 2nd sitting so went to the restaurant after the show. We had to queue initially to wait for the first sitting to clear and then directed to our table. However some very drunk idiot decided to make a spectacle of himself and complain about the wait. Generally the meals were lukewarm which was extremely disappointing. They would have been nice if hot. Our restaurant servers were very nice and efficient but the bars were understaffed and took too many orders on at once. However one bar steward shone in the raffles bar working very hard and friendly. Entertainment was excellent especially Angelina and Lee. As a group the singers weren’t great but when the sang solo they were very good. The dancers were top class also. The solo violinist was excellent also. We enjoyed the excursions apart from the coach on return from Brussels which dropped us quite a bit away from the terminal. Getting on and off the ship for excursions were smooth on the whole. Found the ship to be rather small for our liking so probably wouldn’t go again. Read Less

I was looking forward to this cruise with my friend as I had sailed on Ocean Village about 4 times many years ago and wanted to compare. Embarkation from Tilbury was brilliant. We were called by the colour on our luggage label and walked on board without much queuing. The waiting area had plenty of seating, a small coffee bar and was nice and warm. Our cabin was a nice size (I already knew this from OV) but the wooden furniture was the original and so was the bathroom. This was OK though and the shower is really large. The air con worked well and the bed was comfortable. Our cabin was on deck 5 at the front (5120) and had a lot of movement on rough days. I was seasick and would recommend a higher level and central if you suffer from this. There seemed to be a lot of crowding in the Bistro buffet on level 12. We had to find a seat (not easy) then take turns to get our food. I had never experienced this on OV so I can only assume that it was the time of year and no-one was eating outside. The food here was average. Breakfast was very good, lunch didn't have much choice of hot food and it didn't look that appetising. The desserts were moussy!! and the hot choice seemed mainly to be a sloppy variation of bread and butter pudding. The thing that put us off the most though was that it was very cold in there. On the second day we decided to use the Waterfront restaurant (waiter service). We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of food compared to the Bistro so we continued to use it.... and it was lovely and warm. The afternoon tea was nice with delicious biscuits and scones with fresh cream and jam.... yummy. The entertainment was quite poor and there wasn't a huge amount going on, especially during our day at sea. I liked the comedian though.... very old jokes but he pulled it off because he was likeable. The decor in the public areas was nice and looked refurbished. There is quite a lot of seating around the ship and it didn't feel crowded (except the Bistro) even though the ship was full. I'll finish on a positive as we really enjoyed our cruise. The staff were excellent. They worked hard and were always helpful and friendly. Also our fellow passengers were so friendly which made all the difference. Read Less

We booked this cruise because of the Comedy Legends which we had experienced on a previous cruise. The embarkation was very quick, we had journed by coach from Victoria coach station which due to traffic took 1 & half hours. We found the cabin rather tired though the beds were comfortable, the wash basin was old and did not hold water very well due to a worn mechanical system. The shower though was perfect. Another problem was that the ship was draughty, especially the main entertainment centre the 'Palladium' on the right hand side so we sat on the left which was slightly better, we did have one session when the temperature was decent but soon was back to draughty a couple of hours later. The entertainment was generally good, after all we did go to see the comedy hero's who did not dissapoint. The in house entertainment team did a good show, the dancers were very good, the singers were let down by a poor sound system which was far to loud, do they not have a desibel meter, I did hear that some people that had earing aids took them out. The food was generally good though in the self service bistro was not pipping hot even when there at the start of service, the 'Waterfront' where the evening dinner was taken the menu was sometimes difficult to understand to those who did not have the experience in this type of dinning, also the service was a bit long winded. During the hotter days there were plenty of sunbeds around but the we had the old problem of towels on beds but no bodies. Over all we had, for us, a pleasent 15 days but don't think we would book another cruise on the Columbus. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was visiting places I am ashamed to say we had not yet visited - although virtually on our doorstep! We have cruised a lot - once or sometimes twice a year for the last 40 years with various shipping companies. On this cruise leaving from Tilbury we were to visit Kirkwall in the Orkneys, the Isle of Skye then onto Ireland and finally France. Generally the ship is nice but not sumptuous by any means. Checking in was trouble free. Our window cabin was smaller than most and definitely very tired. The Pink plastic sink had seen much better times, part of the ceiling was not fitted properly, the chair had numerous stains, the soap dispenser in the shower was empty, the air conditioning was noisy, but the worst crime was NYLON sheets (I did not know they still made them)etc. however we had no intention of spending our holiday in the cabin so we accepted it. On complaining about the sheets we were given cotton mix ones. We do not do self service so we ate in the waterfront restaurant for breakfast and dinner. This was like two different experiences! Breakfast was hurried, bacon dry and hard, sausages like cardboard but worse the tea was always cold - the coffee looked better. In the evening the service was much more civilized, food hot and tasty with plenty of choice and no rush - we were second sitting. Evening entertainment passed the hour before dinner with a drink in hand but I would not go to see any of them off the ship although the violinist and pianist were excelllent. The singers were shouting most of the time even though they had mikes, the comedian and magician were OK. Certainly not the best on board entertainment and during the day very little "events", mainly a quiz or two, a lecture and a lot of private functions. Excursions were very expensive, average £45 per person for half a day. To sum up - you get what you pay for. We got this cruise on a second person half price deal, which talking to others was the deal most people went on. Do not expect a high dining experience, do not expect chocolates on your pillow or towels made into animals, do not expect free toiletries (we got a mini bar of soap and shower gel that was pretty unpleasant), Do expect to pay £2.80 for a bottle of water (yes!!), do expect to be treated like cattle for breakfast and lunch and do expect to vacate your cabin by 7am on the last day but not be allowed off the ship for another 2 to 3 hours. Would I go again? At the right price I would but I do think that for maybe no more than £10-20 a head they could include some little extras that make the holiday a bit more memorable - and please get rid of the nylon sheets! We took 40 people on the cruise around the British Isles aboard the Columbus. The itinerary was excellent and we managed to get in to every port! Every single person was more than happy with the ship and the destinations . Admittedly, we did have surprisingly good weather which helped but three months later people are still taking about their good experiences. Embarkation was very smooth and efficient, there was no waiting around. We were aboard the ship and the luggage was in our cabins within an hour. The cabins are larger than average with plenty of storage. The shower had plenty of room to move and there was a full length mirror. The ship was clean and well maintained. The staff worked hard to ensure public areas always looked good. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Unlike some of the larger ships staff got to know you and made sure that you were well catered for. There was plenty of choice in both dining rooms. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. The staff were attentive and ensured dietary needs were attended to. The ship has been renovated. The public areas are comfortable with plenty of seating. The evening entertainment was varied and there were quizzes, music and dancing every evening as well as the theatre entertainment. We would most definitely go on another cruise on the Columbus, it was great value for money and bar prices were not inflated. Highly recommend to others. Read Less

This review is probably appropriate for ‘first timers’ as it was our first ever cruise, We didn’t want the cruise to involve flying to a foreign airport before getting on the boat. Waiting at airports and cancelled flights to be avoided. We decided to get the best accommodation on a small ship with an adults only policy. If we didn’t enjoy the experience under these conditions – we never would! Cruise and Maritime (CMV) seemed to fit the bill and we chose an eight day cruise to the Norwegian fjords. Our junior suite with balcony was the top of the range for cabins. Leaving from Tilbury, it took us 36 hours to reach our destination. Fortunately the North Sea was pretty calm. Columbus is a comparatively small ship for cruising, at 63,000 tons. Built in 1986 it has had various owners and re-fits until CMV acquired it in 2017. It has a capacity for 1,600 travellers and a crew of 638. On our journey there were 1,400 on board, but it didn’t seem to be particularly crowded. The staff all spoke good English and, without exception, were helpful and friendly. The suite was large (350 sq.ft). Excellent shower. King size bed. Three seater sofa. Flat screen TV (small). Plenty of space to hang clothes and a dressing area as well. A good start. Outside there were two smallish swimming pools and plenty of leisure areas for relaxing and sunbathing (late August in Norway? Unlikely!) We wanted a leisurely experience, without the formality of ‘dressing for dinner with the captain’. With a choice of places to eat we managed to achieve that, although there was such an evening for which the majority appeared prepared and had packed their glad rags and DJs. This was hosted in the Waterfront Restaurant with its usual full waiter service, but there was always the self-service Plantation Bistro as an acceptable substitute. In either eatery the food was good, if a little repetitive in the Bistro. A daily news-sheet detailed all of the activities happening on board for that day, which were wide and varied. They helped to pass the time whilst sailing from one place to another. A variety of live bands gave excellent performances in either the Palladium Show Lounge or the Dome Nightclub and overall the variety of entertainments was good. We enjoyed our first taste of cruising but – if we take another one – will probably sail to somewhere warmer! Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was a fair price and it went from Tilbury which is quite near to where we live. Also friends asked us to come with them which made it even more enjoyable. This cruise stopped at Copenhagen(Denmark), Warnemunde (Germany), Helsinki (Finland). St. Petersburgh (Russia), Tallin (Estonia), Stockholm (Sweden) and Aarhus (Denmark) We took an organised CMV trip in each place although there are shuttle buses in several places should you wish to go it alone. There was a good variety trips so it was difficult to choose but I think we did well our choices and we were more than satisfied with most. The least liked, but it did what it said, was Copenhagen 'Yours to explore' only because we were just wandering around. The two day comprehensive trip in Russia was absolutely the best. Such a lot was crammed into the two days and we had a very good guide. I find it hard to express the wonder I felt in all the churches, palaces, cathedrals and museums. Breathtakingly beautiful. We have been in magnificent cathedrals in the UK, but nothing as beautiful and elaborate as the palaces, museums and cathedrals in Russia. Also included was a ride on the Metro. Saint Petersburg Metro is one of the deepest metro systems in the world. We had a good cabin on the ship an an excellent cabin steward. Towels and tea/coffee making replaced daily. The food was very good. It was lovely being waited on in the Waterfront restaurant with 5 courses per meal. Of course you could pick your own food and the quantity if you went up to deck 12 to the Plantation restaurant, which we did at breakfast and lunch-time. You could have afternoon tea and cakes and burgers on the deck at lunch time. Food was hot and delicious and plenty of choice. One day there was a barbeque out on deck which was good. Drinks are quite expensive as you would imagine, and if you are a drinker it might be worth getting the package, but we often had the cocktail of the day which was a very pleasant drink. Embarking and disembarking was well organised. We had to be out of our cabin by 07.00 but we didn't actually get off the ship until 11.10 which was a long wait but considering there were 1400 of us it had to be that way. The entertainment was good too. Something different each night. Singing, dancing, magic. I am not a lover of magic, but it was presented in an entertaining way. We also had a laser show. You need to be prompt in the Palladium theatre to get a good seat. Various other activities took place at different times but we didnt take part. I went to art and craft and enjoyed painting and card making on days at sea. It tells you on the daily sheet (which is delivered to your cabin the previous evening) what activities are on where and what time. Also the dress code, bar and dining times, etc. Read Less

We boarded Columbus which looked okay in comparison to other cruises which we have been on. Fred Olsen being far superior and modern. All went well until day 4 when we were awoken by the sound of rushing water which unfortunately for us caused ourselves and 80+ other passengers to be offloaded in Bergen as our rooms were out of action. We are now back in the UK after being flown home. To CMV credit the customer service was excellent and we have been given a full refund and a discount for use in the future. Columbus is to be repaired at the end of August after her last sailings and I look forward to sailing her next year when she has been upgraded. Also the food was good and variety should suit all tastes. Bars well stocked. Cabins however haven't been updated since CMV took ownership of Columbus from P&O. Read Less

We have booked for the round South America voyage on the Marco Polo in January 2019 so when we saw a good deal on CMV Columbus we thought why not give it a try. We have cruised with P&O, Azamara, Princess and Viking but don't live on ships like some people. We are newly retired and enjoy touring holidays worldwide and skiing so we ain't just cruise bores! After booking an inside cabin 6179 we found out that CMV had within a few hours reduced the price by £200 per person ouch! one phone call later we had the money back as on board credit Thanks CMV. Embarkation was easy at the Tilbury Cruise Terminal. We had booked long term parking which turned out to be in a Cemex compound about a mile away the shuttle bus got us back to the terminal where we joined the ship. Cabin was a good size and could sleep 4 with 2 pull down bunks, lots of storage space and cleanish. Cabin was a bit tired but everything worked OK. TV was a bit small and the channels limited especially when at sea but hey who needs TV? This was a 'Multigenerational Cruise' that meant children on board ARGHHHHHH but seriously most of the time the kids we met were well behaved and well mannered. Some cruisers had bad experiences with kids in the pools and so called adults only stern bars. CMV need to get the rules in place before the cruise starts so crew and staff know what is expected. Food was OK we used the Grill twice steaks were very nice and the Fusion Indian restaurant was fine but a bit strange the usual poppadoms and pickles followed by starters then naan bread and mains mixed up a bit. Service was fine in all the venues we were on second sitting in the Waterfront and our waiters were excellent. The entertainment was on the whole good some bad singing but the entertainers did at least 2 shows a day and worked very hard (Princess entertainers did only about 4 shows in a similar 14/15 day cruise) So well done the show team. Cruise director was rubbish worst jokes ever!!! Ports and shore excursions were as expected but it would have been nice to spend more than half a day in Lisbon, prices reasonable compared to other cruise lines. The good: Great value for money The Bad: Once waiters found you had bought the VIP drinks package they tended to ignore you. Some rude and surly waiters Nico you know what I mean. No policing of the sunbeds some people left their towels for 2 hours + how rude! you know who you are. Not enough sunbeds Having paid for a 'Package' that included tips we were a bit disappointed that our cabin steward gave us bad looks on the last day, we had already paid his tip. Other cruise lines (Azamara etc) state no tips required or expected...... Conclusions CMV provide a great value for money service and we are happy to cruise with them again. Read Less

Every day was a stir fry or some obscure meat like beef cheeks nasty cheap food by the end of the cruise so many people were eating from the kids section as the food was slightly better. if you are vegetarian you would really struggle veggie curry and rice or cheese and salad . No late food apart from 11 to 11 30 when plates of Iceland type buffet food was taken Around the bars. You felt like a penguin being given fish . Most staff rude especially reception we went to complain about the lack of sun beds 450 for 1400 passengers.the receptionist rolled her eyes and picked up the phone twice while we were talking . People were taking sun beds when someone went for food and leaving belongings piled on the floor . There were arguments and near fights every day . The Crewe had their own deck with around 30 beds that weren’t being used we got a sun bed twice in 15 days and it was taken when we went for lunch . People were sitting on chairs taken from the buffet as there was nowhere to sit.we ended up going to the speciality restaurants they were a bit better but you shouldn’t have to pay . Entertainment was awful singers screeched out of tune people got up and walked out including us. We went to Tenerife on a Sunday everywhere was shut . Some of the places visited were too short 4 hours not enough time . Kids in pools couldn’t use till day ten when the made one adult only We lost tv signal on 3rd day . Incompetent management it all needs a massive review All in all this was my tenth and by far the worst cruise I would never sail with them again or recommend them to anyone I know . Read Less

Also the meals were very ordinary to say the least but the bar had very reasonable prices and the entertainment was first class the cabins were excellent with plenty of wardrobe space and storage space., we particularly liked the itinerary as only one day cruising with 11 days in a different port/country every day.The embarking and disembarking went like clockwork no problems with that, As well as they had shuttle buses waiting in the ports that were too far away from the main town.city we where visiting Very nice touch, So over all it was mostly positive with but a few negatives {food and SOME service] Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. We have done about 10 cruises altogether with Royal Caribbean, P & O and Thomson. This particular one seemed to be interesting, we choose first by Ports of Call then by cruise ship. Firstly I should say we were blessed with super weather everywhere except Dublin. The three Tender ports were easily accessed and Prince Charles was in one place and Princess Anne in another! Some thought this a plus, others not! The evening food offering in the main restaurant was we thought the best we have experienced on any cruise. Good choice on each course, served promptly by pleasant staff. The quick meal option was like all the others we've had, bit crowded...(and not a chip in sight) .breakfast in main restaurant was not all that well organised... We found evening shows in the main, wonderful entertainment..Some folk seem to expect "exactly to their taste" every evening....That's never going to happen. The only poor performer was the Tenor...the Magician was brilliant, he is also Entertainment Manager...best we've experienced... In the Atrium 3x nightly were a wonderful musical duo pianist and violinist, their performances were superb. The cabin on Deck 10 was large and kept clean. Bit dated I suppose as was the bathroom. But shower was easy to adjust and large enough. My critical comments relate not to the ship but to the cruiseline. We understood we had booked 1st Sitting. We had this in writing. It transpired that dining room has space for 700+ & CMV had told 850 or so they had 1st Sitting so the poor Restaurant Manager was dealing with VERY irate passengers for at least 2 or 3 nights. It was said no sittings were guaranteed! That is totally unacceptable, some folk were diabetic and needed their food and why should they have to eat upstairs. We accepted it, as the irritation could have spoiled things, and as a result on 2nd sitting shared a table with a delightful Swedish couple with whom we got on the with especially well and plan to keep in touch with. But CMV should definitely address this thorny and totally unnecessary issue. The other matter of contention is the thorny one of gratuities ..there is absolutely no reason on earth why these cannot be incorporated into the cruise fare. To adjust the £7 per person per day you go to Reception once you've received interim account, collect a form, and say what you are happy to pay per day which we did. Folk had come from Russia, Sweden, New Zealand, America, and Croatia that we know about to do this cruise which was an interesting fact too .. Finally then a wonderful holiday friendly people lovely ports and the strange thing is far more folk of our acquaintance have asked about it with interest than they ever have about the ones on 'posher ' ships and more exotic locations.... Ps Some folk can moan about ANYTHING - one lady was outraged that her egg was too soft one morning, and another rather nice couple were "very disappointed " there was no choir on board as there had been on their last ship Read Less

We had been on Columbus to Iceland in 2017 and enjoyed its high standard of entertainment and food. Our cruise around the British isles in June 2018, gave us 10 ports in 7 countries in 12 days. The restaurant food, breakfast, lunch and dinner were excellent and the buffet style cafe were of good quality and quantity. It's quite sad to see how greedy people are and how easily the waste so much. Shame on them. The ships senior staff were very professional and the serving staff friendly, and efficient. I don't quite understand the few complaints on food quality, we had no mediocre dishes. from the +160 our party of 3 enjoyed over the 12 days. The one problem we did have, was cruise shortening and came unforeseen. Despite the issue being unpredictable, CMV worked very hard for my guest and gave us every opportunity to sort out the issue to our complete satisfaction. So a big hearted thankyou to them. You only really know how good a company is when they have helped you through an unexpected crisis and allowed your cruise to continue. Columbus, we'll be back ............. Read Less

As first time cruisers we wanted to go from Tilbury (a port local to us) and do the British Isles Discovery 12 night cruise, booking direct with CMV (excellent advice and information provided to us by the CMV customer service agent). Right from the very beginning we could not fault a single thing. Embarking/disembarking was made so easy, effortless and hassle free due to the fantastic organisation by the London Cruise Terminal team and ALL CMV staff checking us in/out. We met some lovely people, enjoyed excellent cuisine throughout the different restaurants onboard (waiter led and self-service alike), the drinks were really varied (brands, etc) and all the staff were a credit to the company. Nothing was ever too much for our cabin steward and he always went that extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction. Waiters, waitresses, bar staff, entertainment staff, ship's crew and officers were second to none - always making sure that we were catered for depending on our needs, tastes and, of course, our safety. We were due to visit St. Peter Port, Guernsey but due to rather high swells, the tender boats could not be used so we were informed that as safety is the captain's priority, we would not be going ashore - those who had booked excursions got refunds and the entertainment team put on extra activities as well as projecting a blockbuster film in the Palladium Lounge. Yes, it is always a pity when certain places can't be visited but if the captain reckons that it's not safe to do so, then so be it.... he has my backing all the time in such circumstances! All in all, l can honestly say that this is the best holiday l have ever had and l would recommend CMV's Columbus without a shadow of a doubt! Destination combined with price governed our decision to book this cruise. Coming from New Zealand we also have to factor in airfares. We had previously cruised on Columbus when she was with P&O Aust as the Pacific Pearl, so we knew what to expect. For the most part the ship is still the same with just a few cosmetic changes noted. CMV, they were new to us. Prior to the cruise they were hopeless, getting information was like extracting teeth. Once the cruise began, no problems. Shore excursions, except for one, very good and very good value. We did six excursions. Food; not flash but acceptable. In the main dining area it was very good. Equal to HAL or Princess. Buffet, mmmm, could do better here. It is quite shabby in places. Biggest moan, late opening especially on port days. Should be open at least 1 hour earlier, we got sick of seeing the little sargeant major strutting around telling people "we don't open until 7.30am". Get your act together guys. Results was usually a crush of people in a shorter time frame. Entertainment; acceptable, but a bit amateurish. I did like the fact that the CD was not "in your face". On other lines the CD can be rather annoying. On CMV, we liked his approach. Our biggest whinge was our cabin. We were in a 2 berth inside. It was previously a 4 berth and the two extra bunks had been removed. But they left the holes in the bulkheads where the 2 bunks had been attached. It was an eyesore. This is very unprofessional. Loved the pax mix, loved the British SOH. Very enjoyable, VERY good value and would definately book again with CMV. Read Less
