Post COVID changes to cruising doesn't look all bad!

As always Celebrity delivered a good cruise.  We were in a Celebrity and sure lots of perks and they were great. Ship is clean and well maintained since it refurbed not to long ago but she is aging and you can see. 

Officers were all over the place making their presence seen to all passengers. Seem genuine in asking what our thoughts were. 

Luminae was great. You can order off any menu. 

The most notable improvement was the Ocean Cafe Buffett and it was very nice for breakfast and lunch was outstanding. Diner is still somewhat limited. Ship was 3/4 full so that. Probably helps keep things a little more predictable. 

Elevator is still out to the retreat on top of ship so makes it tough to get up there. Just had knee replacement 12 weeks earlier. Still hot and little shade so cant say we enjoyed very much. 

Biggest beef was all hot tubs were disabled or not working.  No answer for that one.  Would have liked for my knee.

Shows all good. Music good in other areas

Still really like the M class ships.

Reposition to South America

Both good and bad – this was the 2023 repositioning cruise from Miami to Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao returning to Bayonne, NJ. Overall, the cruise was excellent however there are certainly some very significant highlights to mention, both pros and cons. First, we were in Aqua Class. Great location at the top of the ship Aft. No one above us and the buffet and outdoor bar below but the cabin was situated where we did not hear any noise. I would not recommend further aft as that would be near the door which slams a lot. The room was very pretty but very small, especially the tiny bathroom. The balcony was fine.

The cons start with a real significant non-disclosure by Celebrity. Both Bonaire and Curacao were effectively closed due to island holidays; Kings Day in Bonaire and Labor Day on Curaçao. Nothing was open which meant both stops were effectively a waste and Celebrity should have disclosed that before advertising the great aspects of both these stops. We booked a cruise to three islands and two were closed.

Next, although the inside of the ship is very nice after the remodel, the outside was what everyone onboard was jokingly calling a “rust-bucket.” There was rust everywhere and when sitting in lounge chairs on deck you had to watch what you touched, and it looked awful. Again, inside beautiful, outside horrible. Makes you wonder about the pride they don’t take in maintenance. 

The staff throughout the ship were excellent – they repeatedly stated how import it was to make sure we enjoyed our vacation, and they were perhaps the best crew of any cruise we have taken. Our cabin attendant Lilian was excellent and the maître’ d in Blue, the Aqua Class restaurant was the best maître’ d ever, and went out of his way to be friendly every day, working both breakfast and dinner and making sure everyone was personally greeted at every meal and received whatever we wanted even if not on the menu. Also, the Cruise Director was incredible, funny, upbeat and so enthusiastic it was contagious!

The shows were every night which was a real treat, more shows than other ships we have been on and most were incredible. The dance troupe was Broadway caliber, the December 63 trio worthy of Jersey Boys on Broadway and we were fortunate enough to have Emily Cook, the star of Wicked one night, She was incredible! The other shows were so-so. Leaving the ship was a dumpster fire of confusion. Only one person from the crew was where the line started to get off the ship, and he wasn’t there 90% of the time we all waited. It was chaos and a terrible way to end an otherwise great cruise. 

Be careful though of charges, as they advertised free water every day in Aqua Class but tried to bill us for it when we used it the first day.

Great but with some flaws

We like to have relaxing days at sea on a ship with a good outdoor promenade - preferably one that accommodates deck chairs - where we can contemplate the sea, watch for flying fish and be mesmerized by the bow making swirling, foamy waves as it plows through the blue water.  We don't care about flashy shows in the theater or trivia games or 'white nights' with pulsating beats on the pool deck. We like quiet mornings on the fantail with coffee at sunrise. A little reading and conversation and then a sweet roll or eggs benedict before it gets too busy in the Buffet.

We still don't use the elevator and generally sleep in an oceanview cabin closer to the waterline, so we get lots of exercise by climbing stairs several times a day. A good game of ping pong before lunch is a must and an afternoon nap after getting a bit of sun - in as quiet a corner we can find - is usually on the daily schedule.

Dressing up for cocktails and pre dinner dancing is all we want for evening entertainment. A couple of foxtrots and a samba, if we can get it, while sipping a good martini makes us happy. The fact that 5-7 is Happy Hour for Elite and above was a wonderful surprise!

The Rendezvous lounge is a really nice spot to have a drink and dance. The bartenders are accommodating and when one exerts oneself, you can even communicate what is desired to the servers. A few are not as fluent in English as might be desired...

Of course, a nicely presented, tasty dinner with elegant service tops off the night, with another short stroll around the promenade before retiring to the gentle movement of the ship, rocking us to sleep....

The Summit, MOSTLY, provided everything we expect in a premium category cruise. The ship is the right size, classic style, affordable, easy to get around, and as well maintained as reasonable for an older ship. 

Elite perks are great. We discovered that we EACH were allowed a free bag of laundry and one pressing per cruise. That was a great savings- thank you Celebrity! The free drinks between 5-7 are appreciated. The Tuscan Grill for breakfast is a nice perk for Elite passengers, but I would prefer an early two hour slot for lattes and Americanos ship wide as "Happy Hour" works in the evening. I only went to the Tuscan Grill for the espresso drinks that could be ordered for free. I would have preferred the espresso on the fantail at 7am as I watched the sun come up.

Here are some suggestions for improvement on the Summit's operations: 

Dancing:  Get better musicians for dancing. The all girl band (Mama something) was TERRIBLE! Dancing Town was better but needs to play for those who are dancing. Oftentimes the music, although on key, was not really dance music. Foxtrots, waltzes, rhumbas and then more foxtrots would have been better received. And turn down the Volume! While the band is playing, unless you sit in the farthest reaches of the lounge, conversation is impossible. Whatever happened to the idea of 'background' music? (I know I am showing my age)

Dining: Because the above mentioned entertainment conflicts with an Early Seating dinner, Celebrity might think of expanding the area of the restaurant used for Anytime Dining.  We were disappointed in our table assignments pretty much every night. A table for two placed 4 inches from another table for two is NOT a "table for two"! It was impossible to have a private conversation at dinner, although we specified a "table for two". We were always in a line of tables for two which felt more like a family style meal. Resorting to our second language helped some, but felt a little rude - why should I be made to feel ashamed for wanting to have a quiet, romantic dinner with my husband? Celebrity needs to change the layout design of their tables, somehow. I do not remember that being a problem in years past on the Millennium class ships. 

The service was sporadic and slow. Perhaps the wait staff is overstretched? 

My husband enjoyed all his dishes, I found the quality diminished from years ago. But it still beats cooking or cleaning up!

PingPong: The table on the starboard side (non-smoking) is placed right by a couple of busy service doors. Waitstaff are coming and going pretty regularly, which is a very small inconvenience, but I wonder if there is a better spot for the table? Maybe further forward, right before entering the Solarium?

We had no issues with the cabin. Once aboard, we noticed our key cards designated us as "Classic" passengers although the app saw us as Elite. The Captain's Club Concierge made quick work of getting us a new card - very efficient.

Love Those Days At Sea

BETTER than MSC, on par with Holland America but for a fraction of the price... The Summit was not our first pick for a cruise this year but I am very greatful we made the choice to go with it. 

We were in a balcony room, aqua class, with the premium drink and basic wifi package. So keep that in mind as I go over the details.

So for the highlights. 

Food: There are three dining options depending on your class level, and one for anyone and everyone not including the premium dining options(Tuscan, sushion5, etc). All three look amazing, but as we were aqua class we only had access to the Blu(aqua), Cosmopolitan(anyone), and Oceanview(buffet) dining rooms. Every meal we ate in every dining room was delicious with a variety that left all parties satisfied. The dining staff were amazing as well, they remembered us from night to night. They also remembered things like our drink choices as well as our dietary requirements. Zero complaints. 

Public areas, shops, bars:

Public areas were kept emaculate, the bars were kept well stocked and the shops has knowledgeable staff that did not try to pressure you into a sale. They very much came across as just wanting to help you find whatever you were looking for, even if that meant buying something from a different shop or buying something from a clearance rack if it met your needs. 

Entertainment:

Entertainer on Summit was a mixed bag. The nightly entertainment was 7/9pm nightly and did not disappoint. They were some of the best shows we've experienced on a cruise. The entertainment throughout the day tho... It was a little lacking... There were activities that were advertised and looked very entertaining but ended up only happening once or twice during the entire cruise, for example, the SAFE archery, and sip and paint sessions. Most of the time you just end up having to entertain yourself for most of the day on sea days. Relax at the pool, enjoy the amazing Persian garden, or just watch a movie in your stateroom or on the deck in the outdoor theater. 

Excursions: 

Hands down the best excursion team on the planet. We asked for an excursion that wasn't offered as a standard excursion. The team made it happen within a few hours at a great price. Lessons to be learned from these guys... MSC... Take notice... 

And finally... 

Staff, rooms, space, and hidden costs!!!:

Staff was amazing, for many many reasons, every single member we came into contact with was friendly, said hello, asked how we were doing, etc. Most remembered us from day to day, and even went out of their way in their daily duties to make sure they said hello and made sure we had everything we needed. Turn down service in the room is twice a day, and it really makes you feel like you are living luxuriously. The staff is quick, quiet, and you never even realize they've been in the room outside of it almost miraculously being cleaned and the beds remade. The beds were very comfortable, the most comfortable we have experienced on a ship infact. The public spaces are many and if you want to hang out in a crowd by the pool or relax in the sun by yourself it's EASY to find a nice spot. As far as hidden fees are concerned. We have had issues with this in the past with other cruise lines... We leave the cruise happy only to find out there are hundreds of dollars worth of things we had no idea we would be charged for waiting on the rooms bill... This was absolutely NOT the case with Celebrity. We didn't pay a single cent more than we were expecting at the end of the cruise. Every charge that was placed on our account was explained to us at the time on purchase/application and we were fully expecting it. This means that the money we budgeted for our trip actually paid for our trip, which means we didn't walk away feeling like we were just robbed... I'm talking to you MSC... >.> Miami's port staff leaves something to be desired... They don't listen very well, never have... And that always puts a bad taste in your mouth the first day... 

Conclusion:

We loved the cruise, and have decided Celebrity will be our first choice moving forward.

I have cruised with Celebrity on six other occasions. I would classify my opinion of this cruise line as 'Avis...we try harder!'

So many years ago, I took a cheap cruise on one of their older ships from Bayone, New Jersey to Bermuda. Only half the ship was full, yet the service and food was exemplary ! I asked one of the wine stewards what that was all about. He agreed that this frequently empty back and forth cruise I was on, was actually a lost leader. As will me, it was an opportunity for the inexperienced cruiser to see how special Celebrity Cruise line was, thus to try them out, more in the future. So I did. Weather it was a Baltic Cruise, or the first cruise line to go to Vietnam, or the cruise up the coast of California, everything connected in any way to our cruise was special !  I noted how many people would sign up for future cruises on the ships. If I strayed to Princess, or Cunard, or Royal Carribean, I would always find them wanting compared to Celebrity. Just comparing the experience to Alaska from Princess, supposedly THE legacy cruise line for this area, to Celebrity, amazing how much better EVERYTHING was on Celebrity ! From their shore excursions, to their amazing train cars, to their buses to the incredible Lodge on the top of the mountain, Celebrity continued to impress , and everyone I met on my cruises agreed !

But now everything has changed, and not for the better. My cruise on the Summit was more than I expected but so it goes in the time of inflation and Covid...

From the very beginning at the arrival at the Pier, the Embarkation process was disjointed and disorganized. The sign up for Pre Boarding Covid questionaire was never offered. No one was at the sign in desks, they told me to take out my papers in the empty back and forth que. How do you do that ...you need a desk...they were incredulous.

Upon entry to the ship , I went to my room a filthy carpet, a rust laden veranda remaining evidence of the last cruisers presence. 

   OK, so now to get something to eat. The fare offered was by any standard, minimal and sparse. Example, only two types of buns, plain fish offering, broken ice tea station, no trays allowed, chicken, beef, pizza with nothing special added, no cut up melon, a few dessert choices...etc.  In other words, a noticably cheapened food offering. Nothing changed in the menu offerings in the main dining room. One of the special things I used to look forward to on these cruises was breakfast. The smoked salmon was notable in that it was the brownish cut away piece that is never provided at your local delicatessen .  

There were so many short coming on this cruise that I started taking pictures with my phone so that I could confront the Public Relations Department of Cemebrity Cruises after I returned home.

More examples ...The outdoor hot dog/hamburger station was a joke. They had the hamburger precooked sitting in its oil only to be reheated. The hotdogs were the same, only hardly cooked at all. Ever go to a Hamburger stand with no relish ? The buns were stale, the french fries were cold and rubbery , should I go on ?

One of the offerings during the cruise was an 'amazing hamburger'  in one of the specialty restaurants. For $26 , I was served a ball of rubber that tasted less like beef and more like yesterdays laundry. I asked my girl friend, if she was disappointed, she said she could hardly wait to get off this floating ship of mediocrity. I  asked people next to us and they agreed it was crap. I brought over the Maitre d to ask what he thought,  it was no use, he didn't really care.

With my photos, and experiences, I reached out to Celebrity after my cruise about my disappointing eexperience. 

That was two months ago. I just received a generic email from Celebrity saying they have recieved my email. No further comment was made.

My Take...

Celebrity will no longer offer the special experience they did in the past. Their cost cutting shows. I guess the deluded public doesn't care either from the positive comments I see on this site. But with my photo documentation, for anyone of discriminating taste, will see that they might as well go on a three star Cruise line such as Carnival for much less money for the same experience. BTW, three years ago I took a cheap cruise on Carnival with an inside cabin, and everything, including the food, service, cleanliness and effort was exemplary, including the hot dog and hamburger situation.

With Celebrity taking no interest on providing a response to my experience, I will now, regretfully, look elsewhere should I cruise again.

The Positives;  

I must say that the Summit is a nicely designed ship & well appointed both in the public areas and the Staterooms (starting to get a little rusty around the edges). The half dozen bar/lounge areas are sumptuous, inviting spaces both day & night! The other thing that was a noticeable plus, was the stellar service of all the restaurant staff & Stateroom attendants.

The Negatives;

1.) We had booked a 9th floor Aqua Class Stateroom with an oversized patio space across the rear of the ship, which is just below the Sunset Lounge. We quickly discovered what a nuisance this popular destination could be. Not from the sounds of people above us, but rather the tables & chairs being dragged on the deck floor. It would make a sound that reverberated through our ceiling, like the rumbles of Thunder! It would wake us out of a sound sleep at all hours of the early morning & late at night. Hopefully some quality Nylon glides will make an easy fix.

2.) Being in Aqua class, we were informed the 1st evening on-ship that we each had a $50 credit towards services at the Spa. On the 5th day I went to the Spa to inquire about a "full body message", (which I knew from our Cruise that was cancelled due to COVID, should run about $150 for a 50 min. massage). Well that was the price when the Spas were run by the world renound Canyon Ranch. But it seems it has been replaced with Celebrity's own Spa services and the price is now $229! But the front desk attendant quickly pointed out " today's special" is a massage & a facial for $169. I said to her (thinking out-loud), so minus the $50 credit that's $120, close enough & still in my budget. We went ahead an booked an afternoon slot. When we were all done, she did the usual "assessment" and tried to sell me another $150 in products. I said no thank you, just the bill for the massage special. She came back with a cash register print out, showing the $229 discounted to the $169 and said sign here. I immediately ask, where's the $50 credit? She assured me it would show up & come off in the final accounting with Guest services. Well guess what, the $50 credit didn't post to my account. I stoped by guest services on our way to dinner and was told they needed to check with the Spa manager & to come back after dinner. The Spa manager was insistent that the $50 credit did not apply to "Today's Special". I told her, the Spa's front desk had every opportunity to tell me that when I booked the appointment (but didn't) and to tell me now, was totally unacceptable. She refused to see or be accountable for their miscommunication. I told her, that the offered credit was " false & misleading at best" & no way to build a name for your Spa services.

3.) Midiocre Cuisine, a total disappointment! While Celebrity touts the accolades of their award winning Chefs, we found the served dishes in both the Main dinning room & the BLU to be 50/50 at best. Seemed the only way to get your meal served hot was to order a steak that was cooked to order. Everything else was served up Luke Warm ( if even). The names of the nightly dishes often sound alluring, but no clues in the discripition to what it actually is! I kept ordering dishes that sounded familiar yet unique, hoping for some "Wow" factor, which rarely happened! But in each case, the dinning room service was second to none!

All said, this 5 night cruise was a mixed bag of experiences aboard an aging lovely ship, with a multi national crew (most with heavy accents that speak too fast to be understood) and go out of their way to please. A general disappointment for an $1800 vacation!

Spa Ripoff & Mediocre Cuisine.

I choose this cruise as it was going out of St. Maarten and it not only required guests to be vaccinated but also had to submit a covid test 3 days prior to the St. Maarten Health Department.  That was great but intimidating as we were so dependent on getting our PCR test back within 24 hours (or it could have been an antigen test). If a PCR it could be taken 3 days before departure, not a minute before by the way, or 48 hours prior if antigen, so timeframe for them to receive it and confirm the same.    We got our results in 24 hours but then dependent of the Health department to accept it.  An extensive health form had to be sent to them.  It all worked out but hated being dependent on the internet and outside sources at the last minute.  

We had booked a similar itinerary out of Ft. Lauderdale on Celebrity but as Covid increased there we just did not want to risk it.  Unfortunately our payment in full could not be transferred over to St. Maarten cruise so had to pay again.  A bummer, but we now have a credit towards our original cruise to Canada that was cancelled.

Anyway, cruise was great.   Only 385 passengers on it.  It can accommodate 2,200.  So only 20% full.  It was very strange to be on a ship with such few people.  Really missed the opportunity to socialize with more people as we were rarely near one another at meals which is when we usually have a chance to socialize.

No sharing tables with others and we were spaced out quite a bit.  We always have enjoyed joining a large table.  

Staff was so appreciative of us being there.   They truly were and we were constantly being asked what else they could do to make our cruise better.

Ship was immaculate and a team of employees constantly wiping down railings and elevators with sanitizer.

Food was very good in the main restaurant but menu seemed to be a little too complicated at times with not the very best outcome at dinner.  Lunch and breakfasts great.   


Fantastic Cruise on Celebrity.  Please sail. So safe!!!

Background Information: This was my 70 cruise. I have cruises on Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Holland America, Disney, Costa, Cunard, Viking, MSC, and Celebrity. I am 49 years old. 

Ship Info: We haven’t sailed on this cruise line since January 2019, and it was our first cruise since pre-COVID.  We enjoy this cruise line because it is geared towards adults and not a “party” crowd.  If you enjoy cruises that do not have water slides, no rock climbing walls, no bowling, clientele that is over 45 years of age, and a cruise with very few children, this cruise line is for you. The ship was extremely clean with nice upgrades.  If you are looking for a cruise with a lot of night life (like a college bar/club atmosphere), families with children, and waterpark attractions, this cruise line didn’t have that.  

Activities: I was pleasantly surprised to see they had 3 Peloton bikes in the fitness area free to use for people that have a Peloton membership. They had a show in the main theatre every night at 9 p.m.  

Service: Service was amazing in all areas. There were only 270 guests (normally around 2100) and 766 crew.  It felt like our private yacht.  They safety measures they put into place for COVID made me feel very comfortable and I would not hesitate to cruise again in the near future. 

Stateroom: We booked a concierge class balcony. Our Concierge was amazing. Normally I wouldn’t recommend spending money for this class of cabin, but boy am I glad I did for this cruise.  Because there was not many guests, I had the chance to get to know my concierge.  She helped me with everything.  She basically explained it to me that she works for the same department as the Guest Relations team so anything I would normally need from them, she would help me so I don’t have to wait in line.  I didn’t like my location of main dining room table, so she was able to get me a new location (probably because the dining room was not full).  She also helped us with booking our shore excursions, etc.  We were invited to the helicopter pad sail away one day and that was very nice.

Dining: In general, before you order your meal in the main dining room or specialty restaurant, ask the waiter what they recommend because they will always pick something amazing for you. If you do not like crowds, eat in the main dining room for breakfast and lunch instead of the buffet. The concierge class offers lunch on embarkation day in the main dining room (instead of the buffet).  We ate in their three specialty restaurants and really enjoyed it and it was worth the money.  We did the sushi restaurant for lunch and the other two for dinner.  Make sure you do not book a specialty restaurant during one of their formal “chic” nights because the main dining room menu on those nights is the best.  Sometimes when you purchase the dining prior to boarding, you can get a discount.  Our favorite restaurant was the Tuscan restaurant.  I recommend eating in a specialty restaurant on the first night because some main dining rooms can be a bit unorganized because all the guests are trying to figure out where they sit, etc. (however, that was not the case on this cruise because there was only 270 guests and everything was amazing).  Make sure you visit the coffee shop on deck 5 because they provide complimentary breakfast treats along with desserts throughout the day.  If you would like a healthy bite to eat, visit the Solarium for breakfast and lunch (they offer fresh juice, smoothies, etc.)

Other: I prefer Celebrity, Holland America, Cunard, and Princess when not traveling with children or young adults.  I like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, and Norwegian Cruise Line when traveling with a younger crowd/children.  

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars.

First cruise since pre-COVID

My husband and I have always loved RCL and Celebrity.  With the restart of cruising, we immediately booked the Celebrity Summit out of St. Maarten for 31 July.  We flew on the nonstop from DFW-SXM which got us in around 3:30pm on day of sailing.  We usually travel the day before, but the nonstop only operates weekends.  It took about an hour through customs/immigration - too many people arriving at the same time.  Our cab driver took us on a mini-tour to show us the Covid/no tourism devastation in Phillipsburg.  We have always loved St. Maarten and I hope it can recover quickly.  Cab cost was only $25.

No one else was checking in, so we were on the ship and in our cabin by 5pm.  The Summit cabins are a calm, classic design with plenty of room.  After a check in at the muster station, we headed to the Sky Lounge for drinks.  It is top front, with huge windows, and has always been our favorite spot on the ship.  It was empty other than the wonderful bartenders (Tess and Michael are gems).  Martini Bar always had seats available and it seemed that Schooner Bar was hopping from about 9pm on.

The production numbers were very well done - we loved Soundtracks and Broadway night the most.  We skipped the other shows.  Casino was pretty empty, but we tend to not be up past 11, so it may have gotten busier as the evening went on.

We had My time dining and were seated at a two-top by the window in the back of the ship.  The dining room was very empty, but the staff were busy and very attentive.  Training staff were onboard, making sure everyone was up to the Celebrity standard.  Oceanview Cafe was open for dinner on the Summit, but we enjoy the dining room nightly.  My only complaint (word used loosely) is that they seem to offer my favorites on the same nights, so it was hard to choose!  My husband did have beef wellington and lobster on the second formal night (not very formal, at all).  The lobster was big and delicious.  We don't usually have dessert, but I love cherries jubilee and had it one night.  My waitress surprised me and had it made another night just for me.  So nice and they try so hard to make sure you are happy!

We did a ship tour in Barbados since it was required - the Tiami snorkeling cruise that takes you over to Carlisle Bay.  When we got back, the port shops were open and we were able to  shop and sit at the little bar outside and have flying fish fingers and a drink.  Curacao and Aruba were both open to tourists.  We walked into town and shopped in Willemstad and we did an afternoon boat trip in Aruba.  Both are great ports, clean and trying to bounce back.

We are going to sail the Summit out of Miami in October and look forward to seeing the wonderful crew members that we met - in fact I took their candy orders and will have my suitcase filled with treats for them...and yes, we did tip them for their excellent service...always.  They are not allowed off in ports.  If they need toiletries or anything, they have to write it down and provide money to the few people that have shopping duties.  We had zero positive test results on our ship which made the 500 passengers and the crew all very happy!
