Have cruised with NCL and Holland-America for comparison. ONBOARD NATURALIST: Milos is Excellent. Every lecture he provided was excellent scientifically, with supporting details and entertaining :). Answers questions extremely well, and is one of the most enjoyable people you will meet on a cruise. He is not on every cruise. FOOD: Knew from reviews that Celebrity Eclipse had food quality issues. Dining room (Bluemoon) was good to excellent food quality with rare exception. Service was very good. Main buffet (Oceanview Cafe) was very disappointing. Consistently over cooked and dry meat, but sometimes done well on a few dishes. Cakes: not one was worth eating at the buffet. Everyone I tried (then frankly gave up after about 10 tries over several days) was either extremely bland or just poor flavors. Colorful, but not worth eating. Cafe served creme brulee that was awful. Bluemoon dining creme brule was excellent. Cafe cheese cake was awful. Bluemoon dining cheese cake was excellent. Cafe salad vegetables were often either unripe of going bad. Pizzas are mediocre. Pasta is an embarrassment. Every red or meat pasta sauce was literally SOUP, not sauce, with very weak flavoring. Cafe breads were consistently dry and hard (left out too long). Donuts were worse I've ever tasted -- old and tough. Breakfast food quality was better in the cafe than lunch or dinners, but again, waffles were dry. Pancakes were better. Meats were often dry. Muesli cereal was very good. Stick to Bluemoon dining as much as possible. SERVICE: Consistently very good service with rare exception. Wait times often too long in guest services, but dining and food table service was great, and maid service as well. ENTERTAINMENT: Not Terrible, Not Great. Some better than others, and some by personal preference. Very little to do on the days at sea except Milos' lectures. In Alaska, you can find many tours and excursions other than at the exaggerated priced ones of cruise ships. We rented cars often and made our own way at our own speed to the tours and hikes we desired, Check with each city in advance of your cruise for good public transit options of rentals and local suggestions. Most the rental cars will pick you up or have a location close to the ports. Locals informed us that most of the excursions are really not very good. We enjoyed Bald Eagles in every city on our own. Multiple eagles in most cities flying all around the city to enjoy, often right near the ship. Unless the salmon are running, rare to find bears unless in caged enclosures. MANDATORY GRATUITY: Celebrity, to their credit, allows you to decline the auto gratuity/tips ($14.50 USD per person per day) once onboard and tip your service help directly. Mandatory Gratuity is simply a fraud to hide the true costs of the cruise. Tipping is not a universal practice worldwide, so pay your staff a full honest wage, Celebrity and other Cruise Lines. Then tipping is as it should be as an add-on incentive reward for outstanding service, not for just showing up to work. Read Less

Review of Celebrity Eclipse We tried out the Eclipse on its ten day journey from Hawaii to Vancouver. We usually cruise on Princess so it was inevitable that we tended to compare the two. The Eclipse is a very elegant ship but we found that some of the venues were a bit sterile feeling, in particular the main dining room and the Quasar lounge. The main dining room is far too crowded, too many tables and strangely uncomfortable tub like chairs. The buffet area however was wonderful, spacious food stations with lots of access room between, definately superior to the Lido area on Princess ships. The main theatre is well laid out and quite comfortable. Our outside cabin was lovely but the bathroom is poorly designed with very limited counter space and strange tiny drawers and cabinets. They do have sliding doors for the shower which is just brilliant. No shower wand which would be preferable. Buffet food was excellent, lots of choices but finding a table was often difficult and line ups for the food were long. We were very disappointed in the dining room fare. Poor choices and variable quality food as well as disorganized service. Princess offers a far better dining experience. We did not use any of the specialty dining rooms even though they were very aggressively promoted. A major negative for us was the coffee. Very poor in the buffet and dining areas and the specialty coffee offered in the Cafe was very overpriced (5$ compared with Princess' $2.75). We purchased Starbucks instant in Honolulu and used that during the cruise. We have yet to see any cruise line that can compare favourably with Princess' International Cafe. Entertainment was very good, perhaps the best we have experienced. The singers and dancers were very talented and gave excellent performances. Shops were nothing special, overpriced and limited selection, however we don't patronize cruise ship shops anymore. Staff were friendly and efficient in most areas. Our cabin steward was wonderful, shout out to Marco! All in all a good, not excellent cruise and Princess will remain our go to cruise line. Read Less

We have cruised on Celebrity for more than 10 years. The crew is second to none. This time it seemed way more crowded, with a rushed itinerary, and the cruise director was to over the top. His daily announcements were almost 15 minutes long, the on board entertainment was OK most nights, the best was the live music in the smaller lounges. The main dinning room is FANTASTIC. The cabins and verandas are very nice. Celebrity does have the embarkation and disembarkation down to a science, works very well. While Celebrity’s cruise prices seem to continue to increase, in addition to these increases, In my opinion Celebrity is trying to identify ways to add fees and charges of all types. In port shuttle buses, that used to be included, now there is a charge. Up-charges on drink packages like at the martini bar, 3 bucks more for a larger martini, really why not just get two smaller ones. And everyone of these up-charge slips provide a line for an additional tip. And specialty restaurant are only a fare deal on the first day of the cruise when they are discounted by 30%. In port excursions, in the daily flyer, Celebrity creates the impression the only Hop on Hop off bus is available only at guest relations, all one need do is get off the ship and you can find the same hop on hop off bus at a lower price than Celebrity. So after 10 years of loyalty, i think for our next cruise vacation, we may need to shop around. Read Less

We went back to Celebrity from last 2 cruises with RCL. Last cruise on Celebrity was Equionox in 2015 things change. Recently on RCL Anthem and Grandeur. Celebrity has better food but service on Grandeur was better. Lack of Caribbean music on Eclipse. Bands were decent but very repetitive songs. Mostly current but no cruise feeling. Activities were lacking. Age of passengers were elderly. We might give cruising a break. Elite lounge food offered was poor. Often waived off waiters. Declining benefits. We usually enjoyed the snacks. Drink selection is limited. Dancing by pool rare. When offered well attended. Mention that to cruise director and staff got the brush off. MDR repetitive menu. Some good meals. Some actually left me hungry. Waitstaff excellent. Miss Yvonne and Paul were excellent. Room steward saw him 3 Times in 14 night cruise. Great room. No towel animals. Tidy room. Gym sales pitch city. Charge for Zumba and yoga. Avoid it and walk out side. Did my own yoga on lawn. Captain Leo great. Activities staff great but not enough activities. So sad Christine was excellent with pool side line dancing but only offered 3 Times . Many times I felt like I could not wait to get off ship. Never felt this way before. Limited activities and declining quality has my wife and I looking into other vacation options. Sadly I feel cruise focus is more on drinking packages. How many enjoy fat loud guys drunk by the pool. Alcohol impairment is a real problem. Wishing for a sobering mirror for these folks. Looking like a local bar at sea. Pathetic. Read Less

I work in social work which is stressful and booked this cruise after moving to Wales as both husband and myself needed a break after a stressful eighteen months refurbishing house and his chainsaw accident. This cruise was likely to be the last we will all share together, so we wanted something special. Having sailed with Celebrity previously we were eager to return to "Eclipse" for her trip to the Western Med in September 17. Unfortunately, it did not match my expectations. As the title of my review suggests, standards have definitely slipped since our last cruise with Celebrity in key areas, giving the impression that the company bottom line is more important than keeping its passengers happy. The cabin was clean and well-kept by the stewards as big as anything we've had before with the balcony. However, who designed the hand wash basin with that tap directly over the middle of the sink? You could not wash your face without banging your head on the tap. Not really any issues with soot from the ships funnels, other than a few minor specks. Throughout the ship very annoying, repetitive, voiceless music was heard. We were ashore for less than 16% of the total length of the Cruise, so a lot of the time is spent on deck, "sardined" on sunbeds, or learning to line dance. Security staff were quite engaging and welcoming however - even to the point of addressing passengers by name and welcoming them "home", nice touch. Tour guide on Lanzarote tour arrogant and unhelpful in reference to photo of camel ride - refused to take sterling so lost out on memento having not been advised before that this may be needed to purchase photo. Gibraltar – just Britain with heat! I would give the nightly entertainment a grade of C. The ship’s house band The Spitfires (they also went by another name which I am unable to mention on this forum) were undoubtedly the WORST set of musicians I have ever heard on any cruise ship I have sailed on. They somehow got progressively worse over the 14 days. Once a family we met had to leave poolside at 3.00pm, get off the ship and walk around Lisbon to avoid hearing them! As well as being terrible musicians, their general demeanour and appearance was appalling. The lead singer insisted on wearing a less than flattering toweling dress while singing poolside, which looked as if she just nicked a few of the many towels available poolside and wrapped herself in them. I did like one of the comedians. I think Cee Cee was his name. Although his R rated show should have been an X. I couldn't imagine taking my 18 year old daughter in there. The crockery in the Ocean View buffet is very heavy indeed. You may also be unlucky enough to get a plate that has a protruding ridge on the underside causing your plate to spin every time you try to cut your food. The dining chairs are extremely heavy and virtually impossible to position near to the table without some help from the waiters who I fear will suffer with back problems later! Choice of meals poor throughout the 14 days and root vegetables over this period were limited to carrots potatoes with beans as an addition. Chef must have left turnip, swede, parsnip, beetroot, red and green cabbage, mange tout at Southampton. We couldn't fail to notice that the clientele was different from our previous Celebrity cruises: more tattoos and football shirts. Despite the fantastic ship, it often felt like Butlins-on-the-high-seas, but at fancy prices. Dress rules were not enforced within the for-fee restaurants, particularly Murano, where we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. I do not expect to see a man dressed like a UK coach driver sitting in my vicinity when I have made the effort to dress appropriately. Wives please take note: if you make the effort to wear a nice dress, have your hair and nails done, ensure your partner does not look like he is dressed for a visit to a garden centre. And are football shirts really smart casual? I declined the automatic gratuities before sailing planning to do my own. It made no difference. The gratuities were added to my account anyway. A disappointing cruise, and food for thought about booking with Celebrity in the future, particularly if they can't make up their minds about the "formal" evenings: it's quite simple: black tie or not - there is no middle ground. The tag Celebrity use of "Modern Luxury" is sadly no longer the case! Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was an area we wanted to travel to, and also to experience a new cruise for us, as we had heard some good reports. As my wife is disabled and in a wheelchair, my comments are based on the suitability of the vessel for the two of us. First impression on arrival on board were quite good, although the crew member who showed us to our cabin did not know their way around. A lot of thought had gone into the design of the disabled cabin, and this was explained to us very well by the cabin steward. The ship then held its safety briefing for passengers. UNFORTUNATELY they did not check that all passengers could see the video being shown or that they could see the crew member putting on the lifevest Also there was nothing in the briefing to or about what disabled passengers should do in the event of an incident. This was reported to a crew member at the time, but no action taken. We later had a meeting with the safety manager who referred us to the safety video in the room, but there was nothing there either or on the back of the cabin door. He informed us that they had 2 regulations on board that covered our issue but either could not or would not tell what they were. He thanked us for our comments and said he would look into the issue and feedback to us. We had to ask on each of the last 3 days of the cruise before we had a response in writing, and this only said that management had discussed it and the issue has now gone to their head office, so far no further feedback We found that the corridoors between cabins were wide and the best we have experienced with a wheelchair, also the space between tables in the buffet and also between food counters in the buffet were excellent It was a shame that there were no labels for a wheelchair passenger to read so that they knew what hot food was on offer, and also no trays for use by wheelchair users or their carers. In the theatre there were ample allocated wheelchair spaces. The staff appeared exceptionally friendly, and we also received the impression that staff on the gangways had actually been trained on handling wheelchairs, which is very unusual. There did seem to be quite a few reminders of things happening on board, this for us was bordering on the holiday camp atmosphere. The standard of shows was average to good although some items were unique. And the organisation of shore trips was superb even for wheelchairs users. Overall this cruise for us was in many ways very enjoyable, but was spoilt by lack of communication of essential information like safety information and was the food choice. was. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we liked the destinations and the fact that it was a no-fly cruise. The pluses: With one exception (see below) the food was excellent. Staff were courteous and cheerful. Our cabin steward, Michael, was excellent. The Classic drinks package was well worth having. Generally, the ship was clean and bright. The minuses: I really do not think that Concierge Class was worth the extra money. They brought "canapés" to the cabin every afternoon until we asked them to stop. They were pathetic and an insult. What other advantages there were, were not obvious. When we boarded we paid $109 each for three visits to the excellent speciality restaurants . Each time we tried to book them the only times available were 17:45 or 21:30! It took a lot of persuasion to get more sensible times and we felt taken advantage of. Otherwise, there were some signs of rather petty cost savings. The quality of the loo paper was a source of amusement amongst the passengers! On days when the ship was in dock most of the bars were closed during the day Would we travel with Celebrity again? If price and destination were right then yes. Read Less
