We had enjoyed a previous cruise with Celebrity and so we chose them again for our Alaska trip but found this cruise disappointing in several ways. First, though, some of the positives which just about scrape it an 'average' rating in our book! An excellent state room and balcony, good customer service desk who organised an early check-out for us on the last day very efficiently. Good destination choices in Icy Strait Point and Juneau,fab time at - and commentary on - Hubbard glacier, lovely Persian garden steam and sauna and relaxation facilities and a library which, though small, had some really good - and up to date - and even British (!) authors. As for the shows, a couple of good comedians and a good magician but the ship's troupe, though talented, are saddled with lacklustre shows - and there were no less than three of these during the seven nights. The negatives: the endless attempts to up-sell are really, REALLY irritating, especially when (as here) they begin with someone trying to sell you speciality dining as you make your way towards the gangway (not even on the ship yet!) at the very start of the cruise. Mind you, after seven nights in the main dining room and breakfast and lunch in the buffet, we can see why the specialties might be popular. The dining room evening meals were mostly undistinguished and the buffet was constantly crowded to an extent that wholly undermined the relaxation element of the cruise. On the subject of up-selling, it became clear to us during this cruise that this ship's staff are personally rewarded for the extras they can sell - not sure how much this happens on other cruises, but it seemed a matter of considerable importance and even stress to staff on this ship, which is troubling and suggests they may be be being under-paid for their routine duties. Also worth pointing out that the alcohol on board is grossly over-priced, even before you add on the 20% service charge, so again the savings - on various drinks deals, meagrely worthwhile as they are - can seem attractive. On our previous Celebrity cruise (Solstice), we'd been quite impressed with the coffee shop. Here, the coffee shop staff were boorish and uninterested - as a previous reviewer has remarked, more interested in their own conversations. Also outraged and belligerent at the mere suggestion that they'd made me a latte when I'd asked for a flat white. Again (of course) ridiculously overpriced, (And, as has been previously pointed out, the freecoffee on the buffet deck was dreck (which I don't recall it being on the Solstice three years ago!). Less enrichment activity on this cruise than on that previous one - are Celebrity dialling this back, I wonder? That said, their anthropologist was very good and in particular he gave a fine lecture on the fascinating First Nation tradition of potlatches. There seems more of an emphasis on this ship of raucous entertainment - Mr and Mrs shows et al - which is fine if you like that but I felt that the superb classical duo on board were under-used by being positioned mainly in a fairly quiet bar. If you DON'T like raucousness, which (you'll have gathered!) we don't much, you'll be glad to know that he sound-proofing on this ship seems superb - said raucousness echoed up the dazzling and dizzying main lift area but then was muffled to nothing by the time you got into our state room not far away from there on deck seven. Perhaps the biggest negative of all was a particularly odd one: in several years of cruising, I have never experienced such an inept initial safety and evacuation drill, which seemed to consist simply of watching a daft spoof 'Jane Bond'-type video whose sound was turned so low that no one could follow it and which did not involve any attempt to ensure that passengers were able to put on their life jackets. This was our first cruise for my wife and me, but also invited my in-laws for their 50th wedding anniversary. Not sure if most of my comments apply to most cruises ship/cruise lines. But all in all, it did not impress us as a first experience. Pros : - Ship is in in good condition and cabin was fairly big and comfortable - Friendly professional staff, at restaurants and everywhere else - Buffet restaurant is good quality and good variety - Most shows were very good quality, talented performers! - Very nice gym onboard Cons - Biggest issue is that almost everything on-board is design to get more money out of you: expensive upsell for all the specialty restaurants, alcohol and automatic tips are expensive, casino, - Food at the main restaurant had good variety but was often blend. - My wife and me are vegeterian, and options were not great - Not very many activities to do on board, the upper deck with the lawn and glass blower, but also the game room an everything else, it's ok, but not very entertaining... - Automatic tipping is expensive, especially that for us, the canadian dollar doesn't compare well to the US dollar. I sailed with celebrity earlier and remembered a cruise ( in Caribbean) as innovative and top notch especially very good service and food. This time I was in some ways disappointed. However the balcony cabin(6035) was fine and with good service. The cafe Bacio was nice and with good service and nice food/cakes. The intertainment in the theatre was so so. The service in MDR and in the buffet restaurant was scarce. There are not nearly as many waiters as necessary. It is not OK that you must wait and signal to a busy waiter in MDR that you want your glass of water filled up. It is not OK that you must look after a waiter for many minutes to order something to drink in the buffet restaurant. The quality and preparation of the food in MDR could be a lot better. The hot food was normally not hot. 2 dishes, (Drumfish that was as dry a desert , and Baked Alaska that was a mockery against how this cake normally is served) I had to send out. If celebrity wants to maintain an image of luxury it is time to upgrade the restaurants in respect to service and food. Read Less

We love Alaska and were excited to return on a different route through the inside passage. We also wanted to do a cruise tour to explore Denali beforehand. The information before the cruise tour was not very detailed and Celebrity had little information to provide. This, of course, caused some problems during the lodging that could've been fixed before arrival. For example, on one of the stays in Talkeetna my husband and i were put in a room with separate beds (full beds) We were never asked what kind of beds we wanted; and even though we called before the cruise several times, Celebrity was unable to give us any details about the accommodations or really on any part of the cruise tour. In the future I would certainly not book any cruise tour through Celebrity. That being said, our tour director was excellent. Also the days spent on the precruise tour destinations were quite short. We arrived at Talketna after any shuttles were available to take us in to town. We spent less than 12 hours at this destination. The embarkation/debarkation was very streamlined compared to cruises in the past. The room with balcony was quite nice and updated and roomy as far as these cabins can be. We did notice some wear and tear/ rust on the outside in the balcony even though the ship had just recently been renovated. The restaurants we dined in were the Ocean View cafe and the main dining room. Overall the service is always top notch. The food however, was hit or miss. The ocean view cafe is pretty hectic in the mornings and while at sea. While at sea it was impossible to find seating though out the cafe or in any of the adjoining areas. The food would sometimes get cold as you looked for a table.The entertainment in the theatre was pretty average to kitschy; however, the ensembles throughout the ship were very entertaining. We were on the same ship same Alaska cruise 8 years ago.The millennium has been revitalized and the improvements are very nice.The boarding of the ship was fabulous since we had preregistered on line they scan our phones and off to board the ship.We were sailing with friends of ours and it was their first cruise.We wanted to surprise our friends so we ate ate Qsine(which this was the next to last cruise for qsine as they were changing out that specialty restaurant and putting a different one in.Food was very good and the service was excellent they also took into account my gluten allergy which I appreciated.The next night we attempted to eat in the dining room and the service was soo bad drinks not being refilled dirty plates not cleared in a timely fashion we spent over 2.5 hours in the dining room and was not pleased.The food is not very good at all reminds me of Golden Corral restaurant or a cheap buffet.With my gluten allergy I was used to the Assistant madre d taking my order for the next night.Well it ended up that the assistant waiter who didn’t have a good grasp of the English language taking my order.My gluten allergy is a serious medical condition and on the Summit they took it very seriously but not on this ship to my dismay.The next few nights we ate at either a specialty restaurant or off the ship.I brought my concerns up to the maitre d on the next to last night on the ship and told him we will not being eating in the dining room again.The buffet was terrible also with one day my wife saw bugs crawling over the cheese...yuck.Our room steward did a wonderful job and we had problems with the air conditioning which took 2 days and 2calls to maintenance to get fixed.We specifically choose this date because my wife wanted to see the dancers from the American Ballet theater.We enjoyed the performance and the comedian on the first night.Service has gone done hill where I had to chase someone down for a drink and the workers did not seem to be happy at all.We saw 2 workers we had on our wonderful trip on the summit and they were ready to go back to that ship.We had several problems getting bartenders attention because they were busy talking to the pretty young ladies.Alaska is one our favorite trips to do but I need to think twice before getting on a Celebrity ship. This ship was just refinished and it appeared brand new with lovely decor and finishing. Our balcony room was just big enough and service there was terrific. Only complaint was a toilet seat that slammed. And we heard neighbors slam too. Food on ship was somewhat disappointing as Celebrity reputation was much better. Specialty restaurants were excellent but main dining room and buffet were hit and miss. Some of the portions were tiny and food typically arrived like warm Drinks were good but inconsistent. Don’t order old fashioned as they couldn’t get it right. Bloody Mary was great Our stops were marred by poor weather with two most exciting spots the worst. Our helicopter ride to Glacier was cancelled and inside passage was foggy. We also did a pre cruise land cruise with celebrity to Denali to see wildlife. Strange as Celebrity doesn’t really run that part of tour. Information was lacking Read Less

I selected this cruise for my annual summer vacation with my two grandchildren (both 6 years old). My grandson has Autism and I was searching for a vacation that would be appropriate for us all. I read that Celebrity Cruise had a Autism friendly program. I was excited to find out the details, so I contacted Celebrity direct and got the details. I was impressed that they were including a much ignored traveler and I booked the cruise the same day. I paid for two cabins and my grandchild were billed at the same rate as an adult. I won’t go into everything that was so “not” friendly about this cruise. But it started at boarding. It continued through the Muster drill and meal times were pathetic. Not only is this ship not Autism friendly. It really isn’t kid friendly. I went to guest relations to try to find a solution to standing in line for 30 minutes or more to feed two hungry six year olds. I was told that I could take my meals back to my stateroom. That wasn’t exactly true. The specialty restaurants will not accommodate you in any way. You have to eat the meal in the restaurant (with the exception of Sushi on Five).So we ended up eating in the buffet or room service for all 7 Days. We were able to order non- hot food from Sushi on Five ( most of their food was hot!) I refused to eat in a fancy restaurant and my grandchildren’s only options were hot dogs, pizza and an occasional hamburger. So we all ate the same foods. This was their vacation and it should have been special for them. We attempt to use their kids club. And after questioning the staff I learned that they have a “general” knowledge of Autism. The staff member complained that the parents with children afflicted Autism expected their children to have one on one supervision. That certainly wasn’t the case for me. I was looking for a safe place that the children could interact with their fellow shipmates. Not feeling comfortable with the staffs lack of training, we passed on that amenity. So to sum it up, I spent over $8,000 to eat hamburgers, pizza and hot dogs mainly in my cabin. But the highlight was the Alaskan scenery. I can best sum up this vacation as upscale camping. Nothing luxurious or special. I wouldn’t have been disappointed had they not misled me about their Autism program. There was no Autism program. This is pure marketing. Read Less

I choose this cruise line in part because it touted a great children's program. I thought I had investigated the details but when I got there the cost or the Kids at Sea was $6 extra an hour which was not at all advertised in the Celebrity materials. The person at the sign in desk said, among other things, "We have computer games, Minecraft and Fortnight." Of course my 10 year old was all excited and wanted to spend his cruise time there. $6 an hour for the kids to play computer games????? We take them on a cruise to get them away from the electronics! The Alaska cruise had NO heated pool outside and it was COLD. No one was in the outside pools and the indoor pool was open to children only from 4-7PM. I think for the price you pay for a cruise the ship should be able to afford to heat one pool especially if there are children on board. The only kids activity my child took part in was "Dodge Ball for ages 10-14"---When we got there the activity director invited the adults that were playing basketball to join in the fun. There was no mention of anything like "below the waist." Adults and teenagers were aiming at each other's heads while the children were just in the way. My child was hit hard in the chest with an adult elbow that was trying to avoid a head hit. Fortunately at that point he wanted to leave. I will likely choose a different line next time. Read Less

I have been sailing for over 25 years and regularly with Celebrity. We went to Alaska with Celebrity as I always had a good time and excellent value. This time, there were a few differences related to some 'changes'. There are now some exclusive areas on the ship. For example, unless you have a suite, you cannot access the front of the sun deck (the reintroduction of classes on a ship was quite a shocker). In addition, the refit has ruined the back of the sun deck with a giant screen playing cartoons all day and a steel structure blocking the view to the sea. The cabins were very nicely redone and room service was impeccable. The main dining room refit is quite 'different' but we got rapidly used to it. Service was outstanding in the main dining room, and the food went from outstanding to very average and it seemed a challenge to cook anything but shoe lather. The portions went from fine to microscopic. Tuscan grill was quite a disappointment, and I cannot understand why this is replacing Ocean Liner. The shows were very nice, and guest service was as good as it gets. Despite a few items over which we were disappointed, we still had a good time. Read Less

We have cruised with our now 18 and 16 year olds 6 times- 4 on big Royal Shops, one time on a new huge NCL ship, and once in a big MSC ship. This was our first and last Celebrity trip. Here’s why: Theater: too much smoke for theatrical effect. Strong chemical smell. Main nightly performances very weak compared to all other shops we’ve been on with the exception of one good comedian- Rondell. Too much time between early dinner and main show. We are at 6, done by 7:25 and nothing happening other than live music until 9. Last sea day awoken by captain and cruise director who spoke over loudspeaker for a full 10 minutes at 8:00 am. This should have been at 10 or 11 am on a day where nothing is happening all day. Food variety in moonlight sonata and main dining room excellent. Still about the same as Royal and NCL. Never met main maitre de. Just assistant who came by but was very impersonal and didn’t care about compliments we gave. Poor social skills. Need game shows and 8 pm entertainment in places where people can sit like celebrity central or sky lounge, not in open echo chamber areas with no seating. Love spa cafe concept and good but why can’t food options change? Everything exactly the same for 7 days straight? Would like sugar free fruit flavored waters offered on royal Caribbean. Ship seems overdue for renovation. Couldn’t see outside of warped windows in main dining room. All windows warped. Celebrity house jazz band was excellent and played in common areas frequently. Good focus on sanitizers. Nice soap bars in room. Not enough activities in large rooms, just in open hallways with no seating. Gym is nice but need more classes a little later in morning. Why are only free classes at 7 and 7:30 am? Read Less

My wife and I like the Alaska itineraries, and had previously cruised on NCL, Princess, and RCCL. We wanted to experience Celebrity Cruises, expecting things to be 'a notch above'. Sadly, this did not prove to be the case. First, let me state that the crew and staff were truly excellent - no problems in this area. Well, there was the time in the Cosmos Lounge when I ordered a Bloody Mary, and was served tomato juice with a splash of vodka. I took it back and the bartender added the spices, but then failed to add the olives (which were standard on the many other Bloody Marys I had). The bartender did not speak, not saying he was sorry . . . nothing. It seemed odd that the bartenders would be so bad in what must be the premium lounge on the ship. The ship had recently undergone a 'revolution' - since I had not seen it in its previous incarnation, I cannot really comment on this, except to say that the ship looked clean and well maintained, in general good shape. We found the decor to be somewhat underwhelming - bland colors, very few art objects, blank walls. The ship's library was reduced to a few niches in a wall outside of a lounge - just sad. The Grand Foyer was anything but. Compared to the Promenade of a RCCL ship, this compared very poorly. There was no sense of luxury, of grandeur. Our cabin was an oceanview stateroom - never again will I cruise without a balcony. Still, it was large, neat, and well-appointed. Our cabin steward (Emmanuel) was excellent. On this cruise, I learned to NEVER book a room anywhere near a lounge. We were on deck 6, and the Cosmos Lounge was on deck 10 - but the constant, irritatingly loud 'thumpa-thumpa' of what allegedly passed for music made it's way down to our room. It was impossible to fall asleep until the wee hours of the morning when the lounge closed. In general, I found the music in the lounges to be excessively loud - making it difficult to hold a conversation at times. Where we really felt let down was in the dining, both in the Ocean View Cafe (buffet) and the Metropolitan Dining Room. The food in the buffet was uniformly unexciting, with many of the hot items being served only warm. The quality of the food was acceptable, but not much more than that. The deserts were mostly awful. There were very few chocolate items; there were various flavors (colors?) of the two-layered cake-y things that seem popular on cruise ships - I tried one and found myself wondering if they are calibrated to another culture's taste buds. The top layer was quivery and gelatinous, where it should have been rich and creamy. The bottom layer was a dry, tasteless cake. Another issue with the buffet was that the food was spread out in different pods, making it difficult to find everything. Also, the buffet could feel VERY crowded - several occasions we circled multiple times, looking for an open table, only to give up in frustration. The quality of the food in the MDR was better (as should be expected), but except for a couple of outstanding entrees (Seafood Orzo, Scallops Crudo), the rest were just 'good'. I had one NY steak that was tough and gristly. The seafood dishes, notably fish, had surprisingly tiny portions - smaller even than the recommended meat serving size that is a 'pack of cards'. On the other hand, our excellent waiter Zachary brought me three lobsters . . . My bottom line here is that I believe the overall food quality of most cruise lines has dropped, with their focus on their 'specialty' restaurants. Sorry, after shelling out $$$$ for the cruise, I don't feel compelled to pay extra for the pleasure of getting the quality of food that should be available in the main dining room. The on-board entertainment was between good and very-good. The instrumentalists and the vocalists all did fine jobs. The production 'Elysium', while having acceptable musical performances, was confusing and not well considered. The December 63 group was excellent. Service was generally excellent - the staff went out of their way to be pleasant and helpful. This was perhaps the only area where we felt Celebrity was 'a notch above'. We did find that there were too few of the roving bar waiters; I had to go wait at the bar to order drinks after waiting for a server to come. Having been to Alaska previously, we did few shore excursions. Our captain did manage to take the ship to within a few hundred feet of the Hubbard Glacier - truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Except for the miserable weather in Ketchikan, all of the other days were beautiful - clear skies, sunshine, temperatures in the 60s and 70s. I wore shorts most days. The cruise lines generally have embarkation and debarkation down to a science, and Celebrity was no exception. This all went very smoothly. Overall, the cruise was good, but I might go back to RCCL for our next cruise. I just didn't get the sense of luxury I was expecting. I was hoping to experience better food in a more refined atmosphere, and that just didn't happen. I was also hoping (perhaps unrealistically) to be surrounded with passengers whose tastes and behaviors were more refined. Many seemed as if they would be more at home on a Carnival 'party ship'. One final thought - the Celebrity app needs MUCH more work. It often had incorrect information, causing us to miss some events we had planned on attending. Use with caution. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I wanted a roundtrip cruise to Alaska from a US port. This cruise checked the boxes. This ship was recommended by a travel agent friend who frequently cruises. This was a second cruise for my companion and me. My stateroom was spotless. The ship was beautiful. My companion and I LOVED Captain Tazos. We were obsessed and we wanted to talk with him every time we saw him, but the gaggle of ladies would objectify him and gossip over their obsession as they parted from him. He’s quite a funny guy with an agreeable philosophy and we would like to go in another cruise with him. The shopping area of the ship was typical and mall-like. I would’ve liked to be able to find trash cans. The staff was helpful and ensured a fun environment. The shows were entertaining but didn’t have much of a plot. The dancers were impressive and I had a good time watching the audience squirm and squeal with excitement as dancers flew over the audience in a surprising aerial routine. There were 2 silent discos and a pride party. My favorite entertainment host was Tiago at trivia and putting. I really liked the availability of hand sanitizer. Dining was good in the main dining room and at Murano. I’m unsure of whether the additional cost was merited, (my companion was a little drunk and unsure of whether the calculations were adding up as offers of dining packages were presented) but we enjoyed our time. The wait staff was definitely attentive and remembered my drinks of choice. Kennedy joked with us. Constantyn made sure we were stuffed with delicious food and also packed leftovers for us to nosh on in the middle of the night. We dined at Murano 3 times. The other restaurants didn’t appeal to me. The main dining hall’s offerings rotated nightly and dished repeated towards the end of the trip. I love dessert and there were plenty of god desserts to choose from. There were some very dry cakes at the buffet—like a tres leches cake with no leche. Some of the pastries could have used more butter, as they were missing crispness and flakiness. The buffet was mostly the same for breakfast. The lunchtime rotation of Indian curries and Filipino adobo was surprisingly good. I was pleased with the availability of melon. Upon boarding there was a child running around, but that subsided after departing from port. One day at the Sky Lounge bar, excessive people were waiting for service. As I waited patiently, older men cut in front of me. My thought was, typical old men, blinded by privilege, cutting in front of a younger person, but I was determined to not let it ruin my vacation. I intended to avoid kids on this vacation but forgot about adults behaving poorly. There was no enforcement rules except in the fitness center. Zumba, cycling, and HIIT classes were $17.70 each. The exercise bikes weren’t very sturdy. It would have been helpful to find more sanitizing wipes around. We booked an excursion to go dog-sledding on a glacier. The tickets showed Mendenhall Glacier, but the trip was on Denver glacier. The puppies were cute. We did not go very fast, but it was still great. The cost was quite high $800pp, but we enjoyed ourselves. Glacier viewing from the ship was better than expected. We got very close to the Dawes glacier and Capt. Tazos turned the ship 360+180 degrees. During disembarkation, we had a little trouble finding a place to sit. When our turn came, we quickly walked out and found a nicely organized luggage retrieval set-up at bag claim, but the rows were off by a few numbers. Overall, I would go again, but now I feel better prepared for what to expect. Read Less

We just got back from the Vancouver to Seward Cruise and were disappointed in the cruise and the land portion of the tour. The food was just okay--portions were small for seafood selections and shrimp dishes were rubbery. The cakes were dry and tasteless. We were constantly harassed by hawkers selling specialty dining. One day they were offering a Crab Dinner for 55% off but had increased the initial price before the discount so it wasn't a deal at all. WiFi sucked--had a hard time getting app to sync with WiFi and then every time we closed the app, the WiFi would knock us off. When trying to communicate with our group, messages weren't delivered in real time and were often missed. Concierge Class rooms were tiny and there's no plug for a hair dryer in the bathroom. Excursion times were changed without a notification about the change. This caused an overlap of two of our excursions which had to be changed at the last minute. Had I not looked at my calendar for that day on the app, I would not have known about the time change and would have missed an excursion without the chance to cancel and get reimbursed. FYI--excursions are more expensive if you don't book them ahead of time. Land Tour: BE AWARE that you will sit on a bus for nearly 8 hours going to Denali. Bathroom was disgusting on the bus without running water--only hand sanitizer was available. No meals are included in the land portion. Excursions are available once you get to Denali, but when you get there at 5 pm, there's not much time to do anything. We just didn't feel like we got our money's worth out of this cruise. This boat is absolutely gorgeous! And the ports of call were exactly as expected. We even had sunny days EVERY DAY! How wonderful! The new interior is modern and chic, and the staterooms are lovely and the food is so much better than the 2 Caribbean cruises I'd done 20 years prior with Carnival & Norwegian. That said, here's why only 3 stars... 1. Very pushy sales all the time to buy stuff, pay extra for specialty restaurants and excursions 2. Hidden costs - we had the Classic Drink package and in many bars there were either no menus with prices or no menus at all. $4 extra for a small Perrier?!? And $5 per scoop for gelato when ice cream was free to all? No signage about the extra cost, so the staff had to let us know and often too late to change our minds. 3. The APP!! OMG, it worked for the first 3 days on our iPhones and barely at all on Android. Different activities listed in the native apps, and a weird fix to sync them. The texting worked OK for a few of us, but for one of us it almost never worked. Thankfully you could track your spending by looking at your account on the TV (though why there were 2 accounts for a couple, I can't figure out and I'm a software designer). 4. I'm a vegan, and though there was fresh fruit and a salad bar at the buffet, you had to order 24 hours in advance for a vegan meal in the main dining room, and they didn't even cook the wild rice enough (crunchy). I only found out on the last day from a passenger that they had an Indian menu that you could order from in the main dining room that had more veggie and vegan options - WHY DIDN'T our waiter or the manager know this????? They both took a 24 hour order. 5. Our bathroom stunk of sewage which got progressively worse each day. Asked someone if it could be fixed around day 5 and it did help. 6. We had an ocean view, but it's a round window. Last time I had an ocean view 20 years ago it was at least a large rectangular window, not a 3.5' porthole. 7. Fitness center where you can work out is open 24 hours a day, but the locker rooms shut down at 10pm?!? No signage for when the pool and hot tubs are closed, apparently 10pm as well and the staff are NAZIs about it. 8. And lastly, I know cruise ships are doing quite a bit to keep passing germs to a minimum through hand washing, and I've never washed my hands as much as I did on this cruise, so figured at ages 38 and 49 we would be pretty safe from catching anything, but alas we both have nasty colds/sinus infections that'll take at least a week to get over. :( Perhaps Celebrity needs to install better air filtration systems? We didn't even hear anyone with a cold all week long, where did it come from? Oh and thanks to the ratings items below... we were one of the first to get on our cruise but signage was not up fully so we went right when we should've gone left and wasted 20 minutes finding the way onto the boat after we did our paperwork. And every staff member along the way had contradictory information - put your sea cards away, take them out, put your passports away, keep them out. Get your info straight people! We’d been led to believe Celebrity was a premiere cruise line and chose this Alaska trip with a great itinerary to get a feel for the cruise line. The Good Things: lovely balcony cabin with very nice shower room. Comfortable bed. Great room steward. Some very good external entertainment. Good CLA staff. Food in main dining room was very good and also in Oceanview Cafe. Tuscan Grill was excellent. The Not So Good Things: Service I’m the MDR. First night it took a while for our waiter to arrive and he seemed harassed and didn’t introduce himself or talk about the menu. It also took the wine waiter 40 minutes to get to our table. Second night they tried harder and wine service was good but our waiter never smiled and seemed in a huge rush each time. We only went once more to the MDR and when our hot starters were served cold it took over 20 minutes to get replacements. We were also constantly interrupted by assistant waiters asking if everything was ok. Although the food was great in the buffet we felt there were not enough staff clearing tables. We always seemed to be surrounded by tables which needed clearing and cleaning. The Cafe al Bacio was good but kept running out of supplies. We also felt there should have been more signage around the ship and more rubbish bins. Overall we didn’t think the difference between our usual cruise line, RCI, and Celebrity was particularly marked. It would probably only be an interesting itinerary that would make us choose Celebrity again. Read Less

My husband cruised on the Celebrity Solstice ship, May 24-31, round trip from Seattle to Alaska. On our cruise, we visited Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, Alaska, as well as visited Victoria, BC, Canada. We were supposed to visit Tracy Arm Fjord as well, but unfortunately, there was no safe way to do so, according to our captain. Our stateroom attendant said such a departure from itinerary had only happened once before in his time working with Celebrity; we just happened to be unlucky in that regard. However, the other ports were excellent and we had a great time overall in each port. The highlight was taking the short walk (it's not really a hike) to the Nugget Falls near Mendenhall Glacier. Those falls were GORGEOUS, and in the unexpectedly hot weather (it was 70-75 degrees in our Alaskan ports), the cool mist from the falls was very much appreciated. The relatively low point of the excursion portion of our vacation was the Zodiac whale watching tour. We saw whales, which was great, but it took 4 hours to do so, in extremely cold and windy conditions; the waves were so bad heading back to the ship, that our ship captain had to ride in another boat's wake for calmer waters. Additionally, there was a scary period of time where our Zodiac boat completely stopped running. We were just floating in the sea. Our boat operator literally said, "it's no big deal" but he never explained the full situation to us - we were all left to wonder/panic, until thankfully, his peer came on the radio and offered assistance. We spent about 30 minutes pulling up to another boat, then waiting for our ship operator's peer to steer her boat full of guests over to us, before she (the other Zodiac operator) could help our boat operator fix our boat's issue. It was a stressful experience. Now, on to the ship: it was beautiful! I thought it was the perfect size: roomy enough to not ever really feel crowded, small enough to not feel like a floating mall. It was well maintained as well. My favorite area of the ship was the Solarium. It was so beautifully done and very peaceful. The attendants did a great job of enforcing the age limit rule when the 16+ age limit was in effect. My husband and I also enjoyed the Sky Lounge/Observatory for the most part - it was a great place to have a drink with beautiful views, but some of the guests at the bar were loud and obnoxious; you could hear them throughout the very large observatory. Not only that, at one point, the kids' clubs were hosted in the observatory, and they played on the piano and use microphones, all the while the captain was announcing where to spot wildlife. Many guests, myself included, were pretty annoyed at missing all the announcements due to the loudness of this area. We had a lot of other issues on this cruise as well, including a professionally trained singer SINGING at all times of day and night in the stateroom next to ours. We called guest relations several times to address this issue, but unfortunately, the guest relations employee stated that she had no real power to do anything beyond advise the woman to sing when we were out to dinner from 8:30 - 10:00. Of course our neighbor did not stick to this schedule, and we would have to endure her singing at all times of day still. It was infuriating. That leads me to another quirk: the soundproofing on the ship is just awful. We could hear our neighbors on the other side of us talking in their room at times, and we could tell that they were not speaking loudly. I'm sure they could hear my husband and I laughing as well. I have never been on a cruise ship where I could hear my neighbors talking at a normal voice level; ever. I also did not love the limited, included dining options on board. The menus in the main dining room each night were often uninspired and it would have been nice to have had another seated option for no additional fee. The soda package was a waste of money as well. I had no idea that the soda would be served warm each time we ordered. I could've bought cans of soda in my suitcase if I had known that was going to be the case. It would've been nice to at least have the option of getting cold soda from a machine, but of course, Celebrity couldn't collect a 18-20% service charge on that. The activities and entertainment on board were also pretty uninspired and not really geared toward active cruisers; the entertainment and activities were definitely for a more mature crowd. Embarkation was a bit of a mess, but I could write another book on that. Disembarkation was great on the other hand. I was very impressed. Overall, we will definitely be cruising to Alaska again soon, but not with Celebrity. I think I'm one and done with the Celebrity Cruise Line. Here are my overall thoughts: Cruise Port/Embarkation - 3/5 stars The cruise port is a little ways away from the airport, which is typical for cruising, but it was easy enough to take a Lyft to and from the airport and the cruise terminal. I didn’t love the unnecessarily aggressive driving of the other drivers - reminded me of driving in NYC, but what you can do? The port employees were definitely the friendliest port employees I’ve ever had the pleasure of interacting with. That was a lovely experience. They were happy, smiling, and conversational even in the cold and ugly, morning weather, with all the chaos of a typical embarkation day. The one negative - which is kind of a major negative - was that the employee handing out bag tags was terribly inefficient. He literally spent over 10 minutes talking to a man looking for a bag tag, about jewelry. He kept saying, “I LOVE jewelry” to this man, who happened to own a jewelry store. The cruise passenger finally took the hint and gave the bag tag employee a card for his store. Unfortunately by that point, the line had gotten pretty unruly - we had to stop some very frustrated cruise passengers from jumping ahead of us. Additionally, the luggage employees had NO clue what they were doing. There were other, senior cruise port employees yelling at several luggage employees, telling them how and where to take bags. Many of the luggage employees took bags too early, some weren’t checking for tags which were marked orange or blue to differentiate between the 2 ships at the port, etc. We only left our bags with a luggage employee that had a senior cruise port employee directly in front of him, telling him what to do. Our bags made it to us fine, so we think we made the right call there. Inside the cruise terminal, the line moved extremely slow for about 20 minutes, but then picked up considerably as the line extended impossibly far down into the lower level of the terminal, and it drew closer to 2:30 PM, which was the cut off for check in. I’m sure some upper level manager realized they’d never make it if the original pace kept up. I was extremely grateful for the change in pace. Ports: We had never been to Seattle, so we explored Seattle on our own after leaving our bags at the cruise terminal. It was an okay city. The pros are that downtown is a very walkable area and there’s LOTS to explore and see for a reasonable amount of money. I was kind of shocked at the amount of construction going on downtown, the awful traffic with very rude drivers, and the lack of skyline. Ketchikan was a very cute city and the downtown area was super close to the cruise port. We did the Unlimited Crab Feast excursion, booked directly with the lodge, and we LOVED it. We plan to go back. Our guide who drove us to the lodge took us on a short tour around downtown Ketchikan and even stopped at a beautiful waterfall for us to take pictures, on the way back to our ship. The crab at the lodge was amazing, of course, as was the cheesecake. The entire experience was great, with the exception of the time limit at the Lodge. They ended up rushing everyone out not even 5 minutes after handing out the cheesecake, stating that we HAD to leave because our ships were leaving soon. That was obviously not the case, but they were literally taking plates and rushing around the room to clean, so everyone cleared out. I scarfed down about 1/2 of my cheesecake and was the last to leave. It would’ve been nice to know in advance when we would need to clear out. I think we, as a crowd, would’ve paced ourselves, so we could all enjoy the delicious and creamy cheesecake they served at the end. We were not able to visit Tracy Arm Fjord safely, unfortunately, so our ship captain made the executive decision to head to Juneau - we got to Juneau 2 hours early. Juneau: Juneau was absolutely stunning. It was definitely the most beautiful place I’ve been to date. The weather was perfect too - actually too hot for what my husband and I packed, but I just stripped off a few layers and I was fine. We went to Mendenhall Glacier, on a narrated bus tour, and then walked to Nugget Falls, which were stunning. We hung out there for quite awhile, enjoying the misty breeze from the falls. Victoria, BC, Canada: We did very little here due to the short time in port. We did the Zodiac whale watching tour, which was mostly successful in that we saw a majestic humpback whale, and few Orcas. However, our boat stopped working at one point, and our boat operator was pretty unprofessional about the whole thing. Thankfully, his partner and another ship captain were able to help us out, and after about 30 minutes, we were back to whale watching. The entire tour was 4 hours long, which was way too long. The boat ride back was long, wet, dark, windy, and completely torturous. The ride was so uncharerstically bumpy, that our ship operator got in another larger ship’s wake so the ride was a little more smooth and we wouldn’t have to stop as often due to large waves. Ship service: Excellent. Not a bad server in the bunch. Everyone was very responsive and friendly. Disembarkation: This was an excellent experience. They were well prepared by this point. We waited in a bit of a long time that didn’t move for about 10 minutes, but when it started moving, we were off the ship in about 10 minutes. I was very impressed. Overall ship experience: The food in the buffet was excellent, as far as buffet food goes. The main dining room food was prepared well, but the menus were just not good. The lunch menu was so bad the first day at sea, my husband refused to go back, so we ate at the buffet for lunch for the rest of the cruise. The dinner menus were only marginally better - everything was prepared well, but the options were just so uninspired. I didn’t love anything except the last night’s menu option of lobster tail and rice pilaf. Additionally, the activities offered onboard were just not suitable for younger, more active people. My husband and I had nothing to do. We weren’t interested in seeing comedians night after night, or drinking at all hours of the day. The activities and entertainment seemed geared toward a more mature crowd/inactive people. That was a real downer of sea days. The positive was that the Solarium, which was an adult only pool area most of the time, was a wonderful retreat and beautifully done. Our stateroom cabin was nicely laid out, but Celebrity NEEDS to improve the soundproofing in their rooms - at least in the balcony rooms on deck 8. Additionally, Celebrity needs to do a better job policing their guests. One of our neighbors was a professionally trained singer who sang all times of day. Guest services could not do a thing about it, apparently, except try to get her to sing when we were at dinner for 1 1/2 hours, and the neighbor refused to do that. This made our experience overall pretty miserable, honestly. We had little to do on the other decks, besides eat and swim, but then couldn’t stay in our room because our neighbor was loud and inconsiderate. It was a terrible issue that I begged guest services to resolve by moving my husband and I, or by moving the neighbor. No one we spoke to had the power to do so, or so they claimed. The observatory was a beautiful, but rarely peaceful place, due to over served patrons in the bar area and the kids clubs coming in and using microphones while the ship captain announced where to spot wildlife. That was super frustrating too. The soda package was a waste of money as well. I had no idea that the soda would be served warm each time we ordered. I could've bought cans of soda in my suitcase if I had known that was going to be the case. Started cruising in the 70's when Carnival had only one ship before all these mega ships,all they care about now is milking as much money as they can.In my over 3 dozens cruises,i finally will give it up or cruise with the smaller more refined cruise lines.I always heard Celebrity was above the rest,but came to realize maybe they were,but not anymore.Their food is not for experienced cruisers and foodies like myself.I ate one night in the main dining room and that was it !Ate the rest of my meals at restaurants while in port and at the ship buffet and room service for breakfast.The cabin attendants expect double or triple their recommended tips.There is not even a room for the guest to use to iron their clothes,you have to pay for that service.The aft cabin on the 10th floor Concierge class Elite was a nice package with the balcony a big plus.Inexperience passengers will thinks it's great because they never knew what it was like back in the days. We chose this cruise because we love sailing to Alaska and are loyal to the Celebrity brand. With our past cruises we have always been very pleased with the food quality and service, but this cruise was a complete disappointment. It seems as if Celebrity has lowered the quality standard in the dining room, perhaps in the hope that people will opt for the fee-based specialty dining. As I feel that I have already paid for my meals built in to the cost of the cruise, I am loathe to have to pay to get a quality meal, especially when in the past Celebrity has done a great job with the food. The fish choices on the menu were limited and poor (tilapia is a toxic trash fish and they offered it twice during a 7 day cruise), the cocktail shrimp were watery and limp, and the trout looked like it had been ironed, it was so thin. The pastry dough on the Beef Wellington was raw and the beef was tough. The pasta dishes were watery, gummy, and inedible, as was the couscous. The dessert cakes were dry, and the selections were uninspired. The only thing consistently good in the dining room was the bread, which was excellent throughout the ship, always fresh and delicious. The buffet food was actually better than in the dining room, with a wide variety of international foods. As I mentioned before, I have always thought the food on Celebrity ships was top-notch (in the dining room) so I feel like I speak from a place of knowledge. Now we come to the beverage service. Several times (in different bars) my traveling companion ordered a Woodford Reserve bourbon, and was served scotch. The second time this happened, she said she did not get bourbon, and the bartender replied that he had given her something "better". Bourbon is not interchangeable with scotch, and why give someone something they did not ask for? Also the inconsistency of the mixed drinks at each bar was apparent when ordering the same drinks regularly. The poor bar service just boils down to lack of staff training on the part of Celebrity. As far as technology is concerned, Celebrity dropped the ball there as well. We were unable to hear the intercom in our room, on our balcony, or on the Millennium TV channel. The only way to hear daily announcements was to open our stateroom door and stand in the hallway. We were also unable to hear the commentary from the captain and guest speaker when we were at Hubbard Glacier while sitting on our balcony. And we were not able to make the kiosks in the photo gallery work, as was the staff, so we were unable to find our photos. The scenery was great, the weather was perfect, the ports were fun, but Celebrity really let us down with the poor quality of our dining experience on board, and the technical glitches. I will really have to think long and hard about taking another Celebrity cruise. Read Less

My husband and I chose this trip due to it's itinerary. We had done an inside passage cruise, but we wanted to visit Anchorage and Seward this time. We had sailed on Celebrity before and we were looking forward to experiencing the Millennium. It had recently undergone a "revolution" or refurbishment. The ship's cabins were redone and look fresh and offers lots of storage. A plus is the USB chargers in the cabin and a freshened up bathroom. The downside of the refurbishment is that the library was eliminated to make room for more cabins. If you are looking for a book and a place to read you need to go to a bar area. The dining in the Main Dining area was a disappointment in regard to food. Most dishes were smaller portions and often poorly seasoned. The kitchen seemed to have a problem with cooking pasta and couldn't prepare a proper Beef Wellington. If you wanted a better cut of meat such as a Filet Mignon, you have to go to a pricey specialty restaurant. It has to be noted that although the food was average or worse, the service by our waitstaff team was exemplary with our waiter Rizel. Our Sommelier went above and beyond to find us interesting wines for each meal. The overall experience was average to good with no overcrowding to speak of. The ship offered a number of activities but few that we were interested in. The one thing I was looking forward to were the talks by naturalist about the area and wildlife. Sadly they scheduled many of the talks in either the early morning during the breakfast hour or in the evening during dinner time or when other entertainment was going on. The ports were nice with friendly locals, but now have so many jewelry stores that it takes away from the local flavor of the stops. We opted not to go on excursions due to the price, but enjoyed the stops. Bottom line, this wasn't a bad cruise but simply an average experience. It makes me wonder of Celebrity has changed or if this was only on this ship. Read Less

I had sailed on Celebrity Summit to Alaska several years ago and it was excellent. This time, on the aging Solstice, while most of the service was top notch, there were disappointments. First, our luggage was lost on boarding until the next morning. After a few conversations with guest relations the first night, all initiated by us, not once did they call us back with updates, but sent up kits containing 2 tee shirts, and one toothbrush. (More were sent after another request) The next morning after a personal visit to guest relations, it seems unclaimed bags had been reported the night before as sitting outside another cabin. One bag was also misplaced on disembarkation. I was fortunate to have spotted it amid thousands of bags a few rows away. Otherwise, help from the staff was minimal. Our cabin was very nice and exceptionally clean. However, it was showing it's age with small holes in the draperies (allowing the sun to shine through) and wearing on the upholstery. Our cabin was always meticulously cleaned. The food was probably the biggest disappointment. When I sailed previously, there were no dining choices, only the main dining room. We chose not to spend an additional $50-100/day to upgrade and so stayed with the main dining room. While the food was always good, the choices were limiting. Previously, prime rib, filet, lobster, crab, etc. choices were offered almost every night. Not so now. Prime rib one night. Lobster one night. The other steak choices were NY Strip - not so good. Same with dessert choices. They were good, but little variance from night to night. Additionally, we purchased a drink package (excellent choice!) and were able to order most any wine. However, the wine choices on the dinner menu never changed with the entree choices, I just thought that was odd. Food offerings at the buffet were plentiful but most offerings looked better than they tasted. It wasn't terrible, just OK. But, the area was ALWAYS extremely crowded! It was difficult to get close to come offerings (i.e. omelet station) and it was usually difficult to find seating. We did not feel "hounded" for up-sales as I had read others complaints. They were offered but a simple no thanks was always sufficient. We only purchased one shore excursion from the ship (Misty fjords cruise) and it was excellent. All other shore excursions we purchased on our own. So there it is. I don't mean to insinuate the cruise was bad, just not the previous standard I experienced from Celebrity. Read Less

We lucked out with good weather but the cruise did not meet our expectations. Just about everything was just pretty average other than cleanliness which was great. The ship was very clean and well maintained. . This was our first time cruising on Celebrity. The food was very bland. The service was pretty good. The buffet offered variety but nothing exceptional in terms of flavor. The food in dining room was plain. I thought by upgrading to Celebrity the food would be much better than bland and plain. The wine list was pretty weak. The bartenders appeared as though they didn’t drink because they didn’t appear to know how a cocktail should taste. The only exception was the lead bartender at the martini bar. The Sommilier at dinner actually tried to serve me Barefoot wine (3.99) a bottle retail and we had the premium drink package. Our cabin was fine, the bathroom was pretty spacious by cruise ship standards. The entertainment was really disappointing. MSC’s entertainment is 10’s better. There was only one show that I would say was pretty good. The rest were really amateurish. The captain was entertaining and the ports were okay. None of the excursions we took were exceptional. We saw very minimal wildlife.. The best part was Endicott Arm. Honestly, that was really the only thing worth the trip other than the views of the mountain ranges. The ports are pretty much souvenir stores, some cute buildings and cafes. If I had to do it over I would go in summer and fly to Anchorage and hire a guide to see Denali. Touristy ports and too many days at sea for a 7 night cruise. Too little wild life. Read Less

We did excursions in every port, booked through Cruises Only, and didn’t have to mess with the masses on big busses. Cruises Only used different companies than Celebrity, so all of our excursions had 15 people or less. It was great, more personalized. Loved every port, nothing in Alaska disappointed. However, Celebrity has gone downhill since I last cruised on the Equinox in 2017. Their personalized high quality service that they pride themselves on is lacking. I read several reviews prior to our trip, and have to agree with most, food was a major disappointment. The only highlight was Tuscan Grille, which served a fine filet. We had “ anytime dining”, never had to wait in Moonlight Sonata, but food is mediocre. I admit I’m a picky eater, but not everyone wants duck, fish, or seafood every night. They do serve salmon, NY strip steak and grilled chicken breast every night. Just feel quality & service have gone downhill. The Oceanview Buffet also has suffered, not from variety, but quality. There are many different ethnic choices, but taste is bland. Same goes foe desserts at the buffet, great presentation, but no taste. Ice cream is a hit though, very good. Entertainment varied , acrobats amazing, but one show centered around Amadeus, was weird and boring. Had a comedian one night that was hilarious, wish he could have performed more. Also had a group that performed Motown songs that were very talented. Loved Alejandro the cruise director, very funny. But having said that, really wish there was more activities on the ship. Felt ship had a “ boring” vibe. Shopping was so-so on board, they want to push watches, however they are way overpriced, as is most of the jewelry. We had a concierge class veranda cabin, love the balcony, our room steward , Taat, kept things neat & clean. Don’t think I would pay for the “ Concierge Class” again, the perks aren’t worth the money. Also, the concierge is available to all passengers. Having sailed Princess, NCL, RCCL, Carnival in the past, don’t feel I will be returning to Celebrity. Again the trip was great, Celebrity charges way too much for what is provided, unfortunately. Have cruised with NCL and Holland-America for comparison. ONBOARD NATURALIST: Milos is Excellent. Every lecture he provided was excellent scientifically, with supporting details and entertaining :). Answers questions extremely well, and is one of the most enjoyable people you will meet on a cruise. He is not on every cruise. FOOD: Knew from reviews that Celebrity Eclipse had food quality issues. Dining room (Bluemoon) was good to excellent food quality with rare exception. Service was very good. Main buffet (Oceanview Cafe) was very disappointing. Consistently over cooked and dry meat, but sometimes done well on a few dishes. Cakes: not one was worth eating at the buffet. Everyone I tried (then frankly gave up after about 10 tries over several days) was either extremely bland or just poor flavors. Colorful, but not worth eating. Cafe served creme brulee that was awful. Bluemoon dining creme brule was excellent. Cafe cheese cake was awful. Bluemoon dining cheese cake was excellent. Cafe salad vegetables were often either unripe of going bad. Pizzas are mediocre. Pasta is an embarrassment. Every red or meat pasta sauce was literally SOUP, not sauce, with very weak flavoring. Cafe breads were consistently dry and hard (left out too long). Donuts were worse I've ever tasted -- old and tough. Breakfast food quality was better in the cafe than lunch or dinners, but again, waffles were dry. Pancakes were better. Meats were often dry. Muesli cereal was very good. Stick to Bluemoon dining as much as possible. SERVICE: Consistently very good service with rare exception. Wait times often too long in guest services, but dining and food table service was great, and maid service as well. ENTERTAINMENT: Not Terrible, Not Great. Some better than others, and some by personal preference. Very little to do on the days at sea except Milos' lectures. In Alaska, you can find many tours and excursions other than at the exaggerated priced ones of cruise ships. We rented cars often and made our own way at our own speed to the tours and hikes we desired, Check with each city in advance of your cruise for good public transit options of rentals and local suggestions. Most the rental cars will pick you up or have a location close to the ports. Locals informed us that most of the excursions are really not very good. We enjoyed Bald Eagles in every city on our own. Multiple eagles in most cities flying all around the city to enjoy, often right near the ship. Unless the salmon are running, rare to find bears unless in caged enclosures. MANDATORY GRATUITY: Celebrity, to their credit, allows you to decline the auto gratuity/tips ($14.50 USD per person per day) once onboard and tip your service help directly. Mandatory Gratuity is simply a fraud to hide the true costs of the cruise. Tipping is not a universal practice worldwide, so pay your staff a full honest wage, Celebrity and other Cruise Lines. Then tipping is as it should be as an add-on incentive reward for outstanding service, not for just showing up to work. Read Less

We have cruised with Celebrity on five previous occasions and have enjoyed every one, however this particular cruise experience was very dissapointing. The Cruise itinerary and ports visited were good but the on board experience was very disappointing. The biggest problem was food quality and choice. The ocean view cafe and the main restaurant was absolutely appalling. The constant sales push to dine in one of the specialty restaurants was way over the top and became extremely annoying. It seems the constant pushing of the specialty restaurants coincided with the drop in food quality in the free/included restaurants. The gym staff were extremely arrogant and unhelpful. The senior staff and officers were generally invisible but if you did run across them they where arrogant and very aloof. The only redeeming Feature was the junior staff. The wait staff in general were very good, the standouts were the cafe al bacio, ensemble lounge, Sushi on five and the international bar, the best of all was our stateroom attendant in fact he was the best attendant that we have had so far. I have complained to Celebrity but as you would expect there has been no response. The experience was so bad we will not use Celebrity again! Read Less

For the first time ever, we were extremely disappointed in our Celebrity cruise. We are long time Celebrity customers and for the last six years have sailed at least once a year in their aqua class cabins. It seems that each year, there is another benefit missing from the aqua cabins .... we no longer get welcome champagne, the bottled water is now limited to 2 small bottles on the first day of the cruise (this was cut a couple of years ago), no pillow menu, no additional room service offerings, etc. We continued to book aqua class because we really enjoy Blu and also I love the Persian Garden. On this cruise, the Blu experience was really frustrating, due to the Maitre'D and hostess. We would constantly be given pagers and told there was a 15-20 minute wait, despite seeing lots of empty tables. It seemed like they were trying to seat all the guests at the same time, like in the dining room. We noticed that the window tables were saved for the same guests, instead of alternating among the diners. Celebrity is also selling Persian Garden passes, so it is more difficult for the aqua class guests to gain access and with one of the beds broken, it was inconvenient. The entertainment was excellent on our cruise, both the Solstice production cast, as well as the guest entertainers. We also want to give accolades to the service personnel, who continue to be the reason we have supported Celebrity for so many years. Read Less
