This was mine and my friends second cruise on Carnival Sunshine. We first sailed with Sunshine in May 2017. Last month, we went on Sunshine to celebrate my goddaughters 13th birthday. We are extremely disappointed with just about every aspect of the cruise. I wanted to give it a second chance, especially with Charleston, SC port being it’s new home and also where I live. However, we found the entertainment lacking. Understandably, mother nature cannot be controlled however it would be nice if activities that were planned for outside could have been moved indoors in order to continue to keep guests entertained, as that is part of what they are paying for. The bars and restaurants are understaffed. There were several times where we had to wait for over 20 minutes to simply receive the drink we had ordered. We had purchased the drink package but ended up feeling like it was not worth the money we paid due to the extreme wait times at the bar. The staff in the dining room was not exceptionally friendly, especially compared to previous cruises we have been on. We were often the last to get served as well as the last table to leave due to inattention and lack of service. Another example of our frustration during our cruise occurred when we were ordering photo reprints. We were given a set time by the staff to pick them up. When I went to do so, I gave the gentleman working my two receipts and was handed an envelope. It wasn’t until after the cruise when I got home that I noticed that he did not give us one of our orders. To say how disappointing and frustrating this was is an understatement. When contacting Carnival customer service, we made them aware of this situation with the photos. They advised me that they hold paid items for 30 days and would put in a work order but I would have to pay the $20 for postage. First off, it does not cost $20 to mail 2 photos. Second, why should I spend any more of my own money when it was your mistake to begin with and I have already paid for what is rightfully mine? This is absurd. The children’s camp is also lacking, especially for kids 12-14. My goddaughter was bored and not entertained and would not stay for the camp for any length of time. When we cruised on Carnival Ecstasy we couldn’t pull her away from camp! Perhaps Sunshine should take notes from Ecstasy and other cruise ships who offer far more for your money when it comes to entertainment, customer service, and overall experience. The one positive interaction we had was with our room steward who was truly amazing, named Jaypee. He always spoke to us by our names, asked if we needed anything and was willing to answer any question we had. He went above and beyond to bring us tape to decorate our room for the birthday celebration as well as many other examples of doing what he could to ensure the best vacation possible for us. He deserves to be acknowledged for his outstanding customer service. Other than Jaypee, we are extremely disappointed with the outcome of our experience of our time on Carnival Sunshine. What could you do to make this experience better? Send me the pictures I bought free of any type of shipping charge, and issue a refund for the drink package of our expensive or something else to compensate for the lack of service received. We would be open to cruising with Carnival again but it most definitely will not be on Sunshine . Read Less

We went on this cruise with 2 other couples after booking a year in advance. We had been on this same ship shortly after the major renovations for a 9 day Europe cruise and loved it. This was our 7th Carnival Cruise. First time out of Port Canaveral. Absolutely everything about this cruise was wonderful. Embarkation was smooth. Spa Room on Deck 11 was great and contrary to another reviewer, we are not platinum yet but we did get twice a day cleaning of our room. You are given a choice by your steward at the beginning of the cruise. We spent most of our time on the Serenity deck, and after a few days on Deck 11, we started hanging out on Deck 14 - easier to get chairs and not quite as busy. The umbrella tables and the bar stool type section that overlooks the ship were great fun. We never smelled cigarette smoke as other reviewers reported - perhaps it's location specific but we did not notice. Breakfast buffet never had lineups. Lunch choices were numerous including the free Italian and Japanese at the back of the ship. Our dining room waiters were the best ever and were funny, accommodating and attentive. We were offered coffee every night, I noticed someone said they were not so not sure why. The food was mostly very good - prime rib two different nights were a choice and filet mignon on another night was an option. Entertainment was very good and the cruise director Mikey was the absolute best ever. Another reviewer said he was bland but that is the furthest from the truth - he had more energy and was more entertaining than any cruise director we have ever come across. His goal was to talk to each and every passenger during the cruise and true to his word he came and introduced himself to our group. He got more participation out of the cruisers in events than I have ever seen. The musical show we went to was very good and the 2 comedian shows were good. Ports of call were Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Kitts & St. Maarten. Went to the rum factory in San Juan on our own (25 cents for the ferry each way) and of note - St. Maarten is very much rebuilt and lots of shops and restaurants overlooking the beach. The only thing I wish different was that they didn't remove the news channels on the room tv. Otherwise, this cruise was perfect and was probably my favourite Caribbean cruise ever. Read Less

This was my first carnival cruise, so naturally, you can expect me to be critical. Many of my friends had boasted about the quality of CCL so I decided to give it a try. This cruise was planned for months and I put a great deal of research and learned most of the pros and cons prior to sailing. But once you actually experience it, then you'll know why people posted what they did. I normally sail NCL. SO.. with that said, here we go. I'll start off with my short pros. The room was absolutely wonderful. We were in 10102 which is a spa balcony. We absolutely LOVED the room. It was spacious and incredibly quiet. Our steward was great too. Another thing I loved was the PEOPLE! I made some pretty good lifelong friends on this cruise. Good people from all walks of life. The negatives.. from deck 9 down to deck 1, the aft of the ship smells like sewage. Some people said they could smell it in their rooms, others said they just grew used to it. No one should have to grow used to smelling poop when they are on vacation. The seas werent really that rough but in this ship, even on mild ships, YOU FEEL IT. I've never had to take meds for sea sickness but this time, I had to. The ship is old, although remodeled but she is old! In my opinion, she shouldn't make long voyages like that during that time of year. She was rocking left and right ALL THE TIME. Morning, noon, and night. It was awful. Let talk food. Specialty dining is great. End of story.. it's great. But personally, I dont go on a cruise so I have to feel obligated to dress up and eat at specialty dining. It's just my perspective. I was to go on vacation and be lazy. That includes going to the buffet and grabbing half decent food. That wasnt the case on the sunshine. The buffet has no real selection. It's bad.. like real bad. The bread/rolls are old, stale, and hard as rocks. There are also two sides of the buffet. Both sides serve the SAME thing. Now the food didnt ruin the cruise by no means, but it really took me by surprise. I guess you get what you pay for. I'll stick to NCL for having the best buffet, on my list. The spa.. yes.. the spa or lack of. Remember I said we had a spa room? Well let me tell ya.. dont waste your money on it. The spa is incredibly small. IMO not worth it. But I mean, when I compare it to NCLs spa, you can see why my expectations were just blown to bits. Entertainment was totally dated and boring. Carnival needs to update their shows. It was okay but not something I'd go watch again. Ship layout was AWFUL. You'll often find yourself getting turned around or seemingly in a dead end. But my favorite ship. Disembarkation was awful as well, but I was told later that was because of customs. So... understandable. Will I cruise carnival again? Yes. Because I want to give them another chance and cant base my final decision on just one CCL cruise. I've heard many good things about the horizon, so I'll try that next! But if I had to choose between NCL and CCL I'd always choose NCL. Read Less

I have almost 25 cruises under my belt, I have cruise the sunshine three times this year, I keep me coming back for more. I can’t get enough of the Motown celebration and Mardi Gras night to name a few. The entertainment staff is awesome they keeps you on the edge of your seat. The dining room staff are very attentive and appear eager to meet your needs, it is amazing that they can call you by name. Shout out to Mikey, one of the best cruise directors I have ever seen and the DJ aboard the ship was awesome. As we sailed away l observed all the passengers aboard The Royal Caribbean packed to one side of their ship, it looked like they were wishing they were aboard Carnival Sunshine, the Dj shouted out Who cares about how much noise we make, we’re out on the ocean and the song played “turn down for what “. The staff aboard the ship were awesome, in the dining area the Casino and house keeping. I'm currently planning to return to the Sunshine again in May 2019 and I have a back to back cruise planned for December 2019 aboard the Panorama out of Los Angeles. Any reason to go on cruise, is a good reason, as I continue on the hunt for more delightful times at sea! Read Less

I picked it for the numerous food venues. I knew it was an older ship and read it was difficult to navigate because of what some called chopped up decks. I watched a few youtube pointers and found the ship was fairly easy to get around as long as you knew Decks 3 & 4 were not straight through from front to back. DW and I learned our way around quite quickly by Day 2 of an 8 Day cruise. Room Steward and MDR waiter and assistant were very good and attentive through out the cruise. We generally found the ship's staff to be polite and helpful through out our cruise. I was able to sample the Blue Iguana, Guy's Burgers, Deli Sandwiches, Pizza and Market Place buffet. All were quite good and we were able to avoid long lines. Food in the MDR was very good too. Embarkation was the quickest and smoothest of all 10 of our cruises. Disembarkation was almost as quick too, a very pleasant surprise. We had a Deck 5 OV cabin behind the Alchemy Bar. Plenty of room/space and no noise from the bands that played. Now for the biggest cruise complaint on this ship and not so much the ship. Though we didn't hear sounds from the bands after hours, every single night, people were slamming cabin doors and I mean SLAMMING!! every single "blanking".night. On top of that, we heard people running up and down the halls yelling at the top of their lungs. Cue the noise around 11 PM all the way to 4:30 in the morning. I'm not talking about 5-6 cabin doors, I'm talking about in the 30s at least every night. OMG, what idiots do that all night long? I'd be willing to rate this cruise 4 stars but because of all the noise and lack of sleep, I dropped it to 3.stars. Would I sail on Carnival again? Yes but not on this ship. Read Less

Hello everyone. I want you to think twice before booking a cruise with Carnival Cruise Line. I recently cruised with them for the first time on 11/2/18 on the Carnival Sunshine. It was my wife’s and I honeymoon. We got married last year and booked the cruise back in March but could not cruise until November because we are on a strict budget. The cruise was good until we woke up on our 3rd morning. My wife was getting ready for the day and woke me up in a frenzy as our cabin began to flood. She was petrified, as she has never been on a cruise, but knows water on a boat is never a good sign. I hopped out of bed and noticed our room was starting to flood from the bathroom. It was very disgusting. There was all sorts of nasty floating in the water(they mentioned it was Grey & Black water). I called guest services right away and was told repairmen are in route to our room. We were told to come up to guest services. Upon arriving at guest service I was told to go to breakfast while they work on the problem, and to come back to guest service after breakfast. After breakfast we went back to guest services and I was told “that was a fast” and they were still working on the issue. 2 hours later the found us a room because the cruise was sold out. So I was told I had to go back to the room and pack everything up so we can get our new room. When I got back to our flooded room the door was propped open water was flooding out into the hallway, and no one was watching our room. Upon inspecting / repacking everything up in almost ankle high water I noticed my iPad that was on the bed was missing. So I ran back to guest services yet again and reported this. I mentioned to them the door was wide open and no one was watching my belongings as my wife and I were shuffled off elsewhere while they fixed the broken pipe in the wall. Long story short our honeymoon was ruined by this, guest services did nothing for us on the boat. We were told many times we had to call guest services about “our issues”. When we finally got off the ship and I called customer services all they could offer me and my wife for our troubles and a stolen iPad was $100 onboard credit Read Less

Dining was very good except they did not follow my request that I had book from May 2017 for a table for two only. After talking very firmly with them this was resoled, We also dined at the Fahrenheit Steak house, the manager had very poor customer service skills, she however apologize for not greeting us. Entertainment and Activities was very good.Overall service was GREAT!!. This yr I booked this one without looking at reviews and after I booked it and read some stuff was kind of worried. However, there is nothing to be worry about. Chris the cruise director was amazing. The staff was very helpful and extremely sweet. The activities were fun and engaging. The comedy shows and theater performances were well done and the CIA Band was amazing! Very talented people all over the ship. I wish the pool by the Lido deck was bigger, but did enjoyed the Water Works Park very much. I wish people stop complaining about the minimum gratuity Carnival ask for and hope the company makes it mandated. Unfortunately there is always rude people that doesn’t respect the hard work of others. Overall, great & fun ship! Had an amazing experience! Read Less

We decided to go on Carnival Sunshine because it was mine and my daughter's first time cruising and we wanted it to be very special. We loved the shows, playing Bingo, playing the games at the Red Frog Pub, and the food was amazing! The food at the buffet was always fresh and clean and all the staff working at the cafeteria was friendly and always there to pick up our dishes. The dining was amazing! We had such a good time with our waiters and they made it so enjoyable that we can't wait to go back! Edgar, our main waiter was truly awesome. He was quick, efficient, kind and so funny. He played my tricks on my daughter and we all had so many laughs. Edgar made our dining very special and it wouldn't have been enjoyable if Edgar wasn't there. He was kind and very friendly. The activities on the boat were fun and we loved going to the shows that Chris was holding because he made the shows always so funny. Alena, she worked at the buffet during the nighttime was also very kind and she worked very quickly and was always smiling. She talked to us and she just made our time on the ship more enjoyable. Alena is a very hard worker and is very open talking about growing up in Ukraine. I was able to connect with her because with both grew up there and spoke Russian and I liked that I was able to talk to her in our native language. Another reason we would travel on the carnival sunshine again was that our cleaner was very awesome. Jaya was our cleaning guy for the 8 days on the ship and he was so friendly. He cleaned our room every day, we came back with our beds made and new fresh towels with a towel animal sitting on our bed. My daughter loved the towel animals that Jaya left. Jaya was always smiling when we saw him around the ship and he would always ask us how we were doing and how was our time on the different islands. Jaya did amazing work on the ship for us and we are very grateful for his work and dedication he has towards his job. We would love to go again and we are already planning for our next summer trip with Carnival. Thank you, Carnival for making it such an amazing experience that we will never forget. Keep up the good work and a special thank you to Edgar (Main Waiter), Alena (Buffet Staff) and Jaya (Cleaner) for making our time something truly special! Much love Carnival!! Read Less

Carnival sunshine is a conquest class ship that has been changed We had a really nice time. The ship is really for the active as the sports deck is a main hub. The sky ropes course, miniature golf, football, basketball, ping pong, and other games is on the back of the ship along with the kids clubs. One deck below is the water park. The place for the adults is a 3 level serenity area for the adults in the forward. The middle is common ground The ship is in good shape, the food choices are good. The main show lounge is a little small and so is comedy lounge so let’s minutes have trouble getting a seat Our room steward and dining staff were great and friendly The deli person had a chip on his shoulder or needed interaction training The cruise director had lots of energy and was fun and created great energy First time I waited for food on a carnival ship as the wok and a few other areas there was obvious crew food sneaking and waited longer than normal and then it was obvious crew were doing a lot of full plate wrapped sneaking, maybe crew food is getting not so great and the crew area The shows had good themes, classic rock, 1970’s show, Motown, Sunshine did a great job getting rid of the disco and putting a red frog pub and ocean plaza in its place. Its more open to everyone now and more casual. The music has been moved out of Casino and into ocean plaza which is great for non smokers and allows a better flow of foot traffic The Casino is now smaller but once you have so many slot machines how does having more not being used helping anybody I do think this ship with so much emphasis on the active would not be fun if the weather kept all indoors due to rain, no sliding roofs on this ship 100 percent would recommend this ship Read Less

Took this ship so we could see Aruba. We knew the ship was older, and were prepared to not be awed. Few things that were troublesome. We had a suite on the back of the boat. Cabin 5340. Our drains drained really slow. water in tub was ankle deep after shower. Very creaky and shuddered a lot where we were. More than i have ever experienced before. I talked to an officer and he told me the run to Aruba is always rough. Open sea 11k feet deep. Wind was blowing 55 knots across bow first 2 days. On way back after Curacao ocean was like a lake. Just know it will be rough if you go to Aruba. Forget the internet and chat on carnival hub app. Bought the social media and chat options. Neither worked hardly at all. By day 3 we gave up and got refunds. Of note is on the new ships the app and social media work like high speed internet. It's an old ship so not overly upset. Went to a few shows they were as expected. Got to get their early to get a seat. Slides were good kids loved them. The Rum Frog bar was dominated by the teens. Couldn't get in there to play shuffle board or fooseball they were always there until all hours of the night. Couldn't even sit there and play cards due to all the noise from the teens. Carnival should address this as it seems to be a common theme. The lido pool area was crowded as was expected. My major problem is that from 8 am until 10:30 am they have the ship talk show on the screen. Rather annoying and loud. I'm on the boat to relax play some music. If i want to watch 3 people talk about mundane and dumb topics I can stay home and watch the view. Play some music. Then when they finally play music it's crap techno stuff. I don't mind some but one can only take so much. Play some variety. When they played some classic rock it got the best reaction. I mean really Journey or Brittney Spears it's a no brainer. The different bands throughout the ship were ok at best. Too many 1 or 2 man entertainment. The best was the band 5 aft. They played classic rock. Yes i am older and a child of the 80's, but they packed it in when they played. Seems that is what people want. Give them more! The sports bar is a mess. Majority of the they had cricket on the TV. We are mostly americans. Where was the US open golf or a baseball game. Then it didn't open until 2pm. Makes no sense. right next to casino, and forget ordering wings. They had to come from room service took over an hour and were cold by the time we got. The Casino gets an A+. Besides the smoking, which was choking me out at times, the tables were open and the staff was awesome. The new way they take care of the players is more like a vegas feel. I played enough to get my free drink card by day3, but they were always buying us drinks I only paid for 3 the first 3 days and still had plenty while playing. Super nice. lots of giveaways etc etc. At the end of the day the cruise was as expected on an older ship. My advice is stick to the new ones. Read Less

My husband is deploying soon. We decided to take a trip for the holidays we will miss together. That was a mistake. Carnival is a scam. The ship is so out dated. The room was filthy, the staff was super nice but that is the only good thing I can say. The casino charges you money if you insert cash, then if you win, take a look at your final bill... you really didn't. The food is great if you like the same options every day. The pools are so small you can't get in them and then when the crowds of people are gone, it closes. Called room service 3 times during the five days and no answer, it rings busy. The excursions were great but keep in mind... they were off the ship. Next time we will use another line or take a plane, hotel and car rental. Also... calling customer service after the cruise- is useless. The answer in a nut shell... sorry you feel that way. Wow. Read Less

Love the Eastern Caribbean islands I know you should start a review with the good , then the bad - but I must do in reverse this time. This was my 25th cruise and it's the 1st time I am saying Never Again to a ship. Starting on day 2 I felt sick from the motion of the ship. Even in my lower deck mid-ship cabin I could feel the constant rolling of the ship. I've never had such a feeling. During the cruise I came across 8 other people who felt the same way and all of us were multiple cruisers. Now I know 8 out of 3006 is not a high percentage but it's enough to keep me on other ships and not the 'destiny class' ships. Thankfully my companion had no problems with the ship. Now on to the Good parts about the Sunshine. Cabins: Our cabin seemed larger than the one we had on Conquest last year. I know the sofa was longer. The bathroom setup was also better with a full shower instead of the little square with clingy curtain. Towel Animals I like coming into the cabin and seeing the lastest design but I must say some of them are starting to be unrecognizable; but we play the "Guess what I am game" [Have yet to get the hanging monkey in our cabin] Entertainment is a matter of opinion - we disliked the Playlist Productions but fully enjoyed all the comedians [4] that we saw. We enjoyed the duo playing in the Ocean Plaza most evenings. We missed the Chamber Music that was in the atrium of the Conquest. Also there was little seating in the atrium bar area. Not conducive to informal gatherings. Bar Service: Employees were all professional and cheerful whether they were serving me a soda or a drink. By the way they made a terrific "Dark 'n' Stormy". Casino: The casino must be walked through to get from front to back of the ship. Unless you want to go up or down a deck and work your way through. Smoke from the casino could be smelled in the atrium area as the casino entrance was only feet away with no doors or air machine. I noticed they ran an air purifier at the back of the casino. Shops on Board: Only a few items that were ship specific which did not stop us from coming home with souvenirs. Still have not been able to find a Ship Funnel charm, I've seen them on-line but have not found on last 3 ships. Food : again a matter of opinion - Food was plentiful all over the ship. We really enjoyed eating at the Cucina del Capitano for lunch. I had been looking forward to JiJi's but found it disappointing. The Havana Bar bites were tasty. MDR meals were of a wide variety of good choices each night. Serving sizes were more than adequate. Here's the rub, I felt most of the food to be lukewarm and my companion loved it all as served. Each to their own. Service was great onboard in all departments. Kudo's to the hard workers that do room service carrying those heavy trays and getting them into the cabins through the narrow entrance way. So in summary: you can see our cruise was a Good one all things considered. But Sunshine - I will not return to you, sorry. We had cruised the eastern Caribbean last fall and wanted to do again. At the time we could be off work the ship we were on last year was going out of a foreign port [Miami]. So we chose the Sunshine out of Port Canaveral (1 hr from home) Maybe I should have waited till the Conquest was back in Fort Lauderdale. Read Less

This was my first ever cruise and I get an unbelievable experience! I'm 16 years old boy and I decide to join a teen club (club O2) this club for teens from 15-17 years old, I meat so many new people. club O2 helped all of us not to be scared of each other. Club was opened till 1 am but after when it closed, we went to the food market and we wear talking for 2 or more hours, or we just wondering around the cruise. Some of us made some relations ships (boyfriend/girlfriend). We all were kind to each other. My self, I meat with 2 18n years girls, we get so much fun together. They wasn't allowed to join this club and that sad, but they still made some friends. So Carnival Sunshine if you can please make one more club for teens from 18 to 20 years old. Crue group is super friendly, food is really good. They even have a pizza place that open 24/7. Carnival Sunshine offers all people a great shows, partys, and more fun. If you want to get a WiFI you need to pay almost $100, but trust me it not worst it! Without internet access, people becoming more friendly to each other. Last what I want to say is that it always hard to say goodbye to your vacation, friends, etc. We all become so close to each other, but this is life and we can't change it, but what we can do is when you at a cruise, do not waste your time, take this chance meet new people. don't afraid to come to a person and say "hey, how are you?" On day 3 of the cruise, I saw a beautiful 2 girls and I come to them and I said "Hey, what a beautiful dress" and im actually happy right now that I did it, because we get a good time together and now we texting each other and I hope one day I will see them again) Thank you Ko-Ko (teen club operator) for your games and support! Thank you Carnival Sunshine for this unforgettable experience! And of course, thank you, my friends, specially Ruthie and Erica for this unforgettable time we spend together!! Read Less

We sailed aboard the April 6th sailing of the Carnival Sunshine. This was our 21st Carnival cruise and we were a little disappointed with the ship. First of all, we are Platinum members and LOVE sailing with Carnival. We have never had any complaints of any of our cruises until now. First of all, our shuttle from the hotel in Cocoa Beach was over an hour late. When we finally arrived at the port, we proceeded to the Platinum/Diamond members check-in counter. We had no problems checking in. It was when we got to the line that was boarding the ship, we asked where to the VIFP members board. An older gentleman said "here in this long line". I said that we were Platinum members and he replied "we boarded YOU people an hour ago". Talk about rude! So we waited along with the other 300 people in line. By the time we boarded the ship, all of the food areas had LONG lines. So we skipped lunch and headed to our cabin (7177), which wasn't ready yet! We asked the steward if we could drop off our carry-ons and he reluctantly said OK. When checking out the cabin, I noticed that the toilet had a very long crack down the side. I showed it to the steward and it had to be replaced before setting sail. And we had to go through 3 remotes for the TV during the cruise because they quit working. Before we headed off to explore the ship, the steward asked if we wanted morning or evening service for our cabin. We were never given the choice of both morning and evening service. We chose the morning service. During the entire cruise, our cabin was never serviced before noon. It was while we were exploring the ship that we noticed so many differences compared to the other Carnival ships that we have sailed on. The main auditorium was much smaller than other ships. No "sofa type" seating. Just chairs. The Lido deck, too, was so much smaller. The chair hogs had everything saved by 8:00am. The layout of the ship was very confusing as well. It took us several days to figure out where the Comedy Club, Steakhouse and other venues were. Did not like the layout at all. Oh yeah...the sewer smell that everyone talks about. It was very noticeable during boarding, especially at the Atrium area. It smelled similar to our sewage treatment plant here in town. Once the ship set sail, however, we never noticed it again until we docked back in Port Canaveral. The 2 crew members that I talked with at Guest Services acted as though they had better things to do other than wait on the many people in line. On our first day at sea, I asked for a deck of cards. The gal told me that they didn't have any and that I should check back the next day. I went back the next day while we were docked at Grand Turk and they had the cards. I guess that there's a playing card factory in Grand Turk? On debarkation day, I also asked that we get something other than the chocolate covered strawberries delivered to our cabin since we are both diabetic. The gal said that she would take care of it. Well, we got the strawberries, which we just sat outside of our cabin for pickup. Disappointed with Guest Services! There were very few activities each day prior to noon. We are used to trivia games starting at 9:00am or so on the other cruises we've been on. But nothing until noon on this ship. One of the Fun Crew that did trivia had such a strong Spanish accent that it was very hard to understand the questions that he was asking. He ended up passing the question to one of the passengers to read it for him. Boring mornings! The ship uses the American Table/American Feast menus and we found most of the food to be pretty good. Every time we had a baked potato, it was under-cooked and very hard to eat. This was the first time we experienced these menus and some of our long-time favorites were missing. We, did however, enjoy our meals. The service was much slower than before, but we attributed it to our waiter having many more tables to serve than we've seen in the past. We enjoyed the steakhouse one night and thoroughly loved it. Best meal on the cruise! Our ports of call included Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Kitts and St. Maarten. We always love stopping in GT and spend the entire day at the beach near the pier. San Juan is not one of our favorite stops, so we just stayed on the ship with about half the entire ship. At St. Kitts, we took an island tour and enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks to Thenford Grey's tour, our first time here left us with many happy memories. In St. Maarten, we had scheduled at tour to Orient Beach and Maho Beach. However, due to hurricane damage, we were not allowed to go to OB. The French side of the island was completely destroyed and the government won't allow tourists in yet. At Maho Beach, the beach was so very crowded that we just grabbed some nachos and drinks at the Sunset Beach restaurant. Never did see any large airlines land while there, just the small puddle jumpers. The entertainment on the ship was excellent! We enjoyed ALL of the shows and musicians onboard. Very good!! All-in-all, we still had a good time on this cruise. I doubt that we will ever cruise aboard the Sunshine again. It just didn't meet our expectations on this cruise. We will, however, continue to sail with Carnival. Read Less

We have sailed on the Sunshine about 5 times. Out of New Orleans, Port Canaveral and New York. Mainly the cruise have been the Caribbean cruise, but he New York sailing was a New England cruise. We chose this cruise because we had not been to Aruba or Bonaire, and because we liked the beach at Grand Turk. I love the layout of the ship. Love the Steakhouse, JiJi, the Deli and the Sushi place. My favorite place to eat at breakfast and lunch is back in the Havana bar area where the do the noodle bowls. I only occasionally get any thing off the Lido Buffet, unless I want a salad or desert, but the food seems to look fine. I never had an issue with any food in the MDR and find all the wait staff, even though they are busy, to be very friendly and accommodating. This last time we were offered an upgrade to a Spa Deck Balcony room and really like it, especially being able to use the VIP area in the Spa. I like the music and Comedy shows, but love the Jackson Rayne Magic show. The only minus (why I have it as a 4. 1. my wife like to lay out by the pool, but you can't get a pool chair unless you get out on deck at 6:30 am.. They have a sign asking people to be considerate, but that doesn't help and they state that they'll remove belongings after 45 minutes out someone not being present, but I never seen them actually do it. 2. The Limelight Lounge is so small that if you want to see a Comedy Show you have to be there 30 minutes early to wait in line. 3. It use to be called Any Time Dinning, but now they call it Your Time Dinning and I can see why they changed it. Normally we eat right at opening time so we can make the earlier shows, but once this time we had a consultation in the Spa at 6:00 so we did not make it until 6:30 where when we checked in we were given a device to let us know when they were ready for us and told it would be 30 to 40 minutes. For us it was 40 minutes, but another family we sat by waiting had been waiting for an hour. Needless to say I was not late again, but had to be down at the check in desk at 4:30 to be clos to the front of the check-in line. Read Less

we sailed, 2 couples in 2 cabins, on the 8 night 9 day cruise out of port canaveral. My 2 rating is for the ship only, not for rental car or port experience, but included in my review. Rental car: budget, took forever to get shuttle to go, it was sooo busy. people super nice. Port: quick and easy , we arrived in our scheduled time and kept going step by step and on ship in no time. 1st day: Walked on ship on deck 3, no information on where to go, what was open, etc. we heading to our stateroom, we knew way from checking prior to going, and they were available which was great, dropped out things and heading to lunch on deck 5 which was quiet, heard lido was crazy busy etc. we had our time dining, we inquired how it worked and was told they would try to get us in but confirmed we would most likely need to eat at the buffet... thankfully this was not so. Our cruise was changed due to weather, 2 days at sea and then st. Thomas instead of St Maartan, which was all fine. To keep short and to the point: the Good: very relaxing, easy going. our room attendant was fabulous -thank you... deck 5 sitting area was nice and had great music etc. the comedian was great - we heard, we never got a seat. the illusionist was great, we did see him. The spa staff and manager were friendly. Staff looking after photos for most part were good and we did purchase more than normal. There were enough tv channels, i do not know what others are talking about. cnn, tbs, etc etc. the carnival hub app for your cell was good WHEN it worked. The Bad: - Most un-informative ship i have every been on, things just never seemed be right, also when we got off at ports, within the first 2 hours of arriving, we never received maps and information etc. we have never been on a cruise that this happened. i felt like a garbage picker trying to pick up what other passengers had discarded, they must only take so many down and when gone, stop handing out. motion - worst ship we have ever been on, there were waves, but not to what we have seen on ships like NCL gem, pearl etc, same size approx. drawers were opening, dinnerware was sliding off tables onto floors etc, stablizers were horrid. Cruise director - was around ship, did not seem to keep momentum up, and repeated same things over and over, during the tour information we listened for approx 15 minutes and did not learn a thing so we left. food - while the food was ok to good. there was not a good selection, buffet hardly changed, same old same old every day. guys burgers good, fries also when they were not loaded with salt. dining room staff - maybe lacked training. 1st 2 nights we left without coffee, even though we asked prior to dessert and when it arrived. dropped steak knives in laps, knocked things into food. i do not believe 1 time we had a refill of our coffee offered at breakfast in the sunrise dining room or dinner. we had to ask for orange juice. after we asked if they had pastries they said no, but we saw different servers taking them to their tables. On my husband birthday night, i verified it was on slip etc, yes, but when it came time, they brought our dessert and after i asked they did it. which , well there was no point.. very very disappointing. when we had baked potatoe, only 1 of 3 nights did we get the sour cream etc before it was cold. shopping expert, - rude - all i am going to say customer service desk - ok - shore excursion - took us for 2 1/2 hours instead of 3 1/2 hours, paid 65.00 each, received 25.00 in total refund... better than nothing, but tour was useless. decks and chairs - - well as stated by others, good luck. we went up at 7am and most were taken. we always enjoy even sitting outside on the lower deck, which on this ship is 3, but they had next to no chairs there, maybe 6 in total.... crazy. smokers side had more and nice ones to. but full most of time. smell - yes smokey in casino, yes sewer smell in areas around atrium. etc. Read Less

I wanted to go to Aruba and Curacao and they were was best ports!!! I had not been on the Sunshine yet (out of 12 Carnival cruises) and the reviews were not favorable but I thought the Sunshine was great. The comedy club was too small but we got in every night and the YTD worked great for us - it was no big deal to get our table reservation on Deck 5 and then go down to Deck 3 to eat. We never had to wait and we ate there 5 of the 8 nights. The steakhouse was fabulous, the italian dinner was awesome but my favorite was JiJis it was the best food and atmosphere I wish they all had Jijis on them. Our waitstaff (headed by Kit) was fabulous and we requested them every night. The comedians were awesome and I laughed every night. I would definitely do the Sunshine again - it is one of my favorite ships so far. Read Less

The style of ship that has a lot of seating and usually 3 floors of the main lounge is what we need. People want to see the show but it is hard to find a good seat in the liquid Lounge. The comedy lounge is also too small. The reason They made it smaller while adding 150 to 200 extra people. Yes they put more people on the ship and less room for them to see to set in to watch comedy or see the dance show. They also added 3 new resturants that you have to pay extra money to eat in. They should not have destroyed the Destiny. The cast and crew were wonderful Emma is a sweetheart . James Steven Tyler the money man Josh Erica and all the other cast were wonderful. My room was made to accommodate only 2 people. The passengers before me had a roll away bed brought in . I asked that the extra linen be removed. I even put them out myself only to have them and 3 not 2 but 3 life preservers stuffed back in my closet taking up space I should have been able to use. Read Less

We boarded the Carnival Sunshine on a 70 degree day. It was the start of my husband's and my adventure. The boat was clean and in decent shape for a 22 year old boat. The cruise had 5 sea days and three islands (Bonaire, Aruba, and Grand Turks). The first two days were sea days. During these days the weather was cloudy, sometimes rainy, and very very windy. It was difficult to do anything much on deck because of the wind. The upper decks were mostly closed. Our first island was Bonaire. My husband and I took a motorcycle excursion offered by the boat. It was a fun day touring the island. The motorcycles weren't in the best shape but I would recommend the excursion for motorcycle fans. More rain, clouds and wind. Our second stop was Aruba. In Aruba we attempted to go to a nearby beach. Once we got there, we couldn't stay as the wind was so strong it was blowing the sand everywhere and felt like glass hitting us. As for Grand Turks, we never made it. Two people needed medical attention on board and the ship stopped at the nearest port in Dominican Republic. It was one crew member and one passenger. To be honest, I was very surprised that the ship changed their course. Most ships med vac people who are sick off the ship to a hospital. We were not given details of the illnesses, but I heard that the crew member was back on the ship working. The Dominican had no beaches, but had a private set of pools and stores. We were mostly confined to that area. Unfortunately, I was really looking forward to seeing Grand Turks and was very disappointed. The breakfast and supper food was decent. However the luncheon buffet wasn't all that good. My husband and I ate pizza and hamburgers after trying several buffet dishes that we didn't like. In my opinion the pizza was excellent. So I ate it mostly every day for lunch. The entertainment was super! The shows were great and the bands were great. The space was limited though for dancing and sitting. So here is my bottom line recommendation. I believe January and February are too cold to travel in the Caribbean. I didn't feel I got the best bang for our buck weather wise. I felt five sea days was too many for an eight day trip. I also would travel on a newer ship as I felt the ship was lacking some of the things a newer ship would have, for example a helicopter pad, space in the venues, and stairs into the pool. Read Less

It is hard to write about all the great things that were on this cruise, there are so many!! From the start it was great, fast onboard checkin, easy to use the Carnival Hub to find out what is going on. Fantastic food, loved lobster night. The waiters and waitresses were great, felt like a princess. The ship was big enough to do anything you wanted to do. The entertainment was very good, would have liked more comedy nights. But all the shows were professional done. Bought the cheer package, only recommendation is that you should be able to buy drinks also, for your friends you meet on the trip!! Bought more pictures on this cruise than any other, pictures were professional and excellent. I could write all day about the excursions, all were very good, loved the Horseback riding, snorkeling with the string rays, here were many. Tubing was great but I wish it was a little longer. The guides for this excursion were excellent. The only excursion that was just ok was swimming with the turtles. Not many....the ports themselves were beautiful and fun. My cabin stewards were great, love the towel animals. I had a balcony, it was great. Nice to sit at night. Used the spa for several different services, it was great.. no one thing was not worth the money. Internet was not great but it has improved a lot since the last cruise I took in Jan 2017. I think I am going to just disconnect next time. Highly recommend this itinerary. Will book this same cruise and boat again. Disembarkation was easy and very accommodating, had to get off early, had NO issues. Read Less

We picked this cruise for the reasonable cost and a chance to see four ports in eight days. My wife, parents, and I had a great time. Embarkation was just as expected for a non-priority traveler. Check-in was smooth, but had to wait a little for our zone to be called to board. We did some research prior to our cruise and learned we were traveling on an older (updated) ship. We had an interior room on deck 6....right in the middle. We've heard of nightmare rooms so small that two people couldn't stand at the same time. Not on this ship. Our room had plenty of room to walk around and plenty of closet space. However, only one chair/stool to sit down. My parents balcony room had even more space and a small couch and table. Our room steward (Kadek) was great. We chose service twice a day. We read on other reviews that the bathrooms did not have an electrical outlet. That is false. There is one located near the ceiling above the sink area. There were so many activities going on each day, we had to plan in some breaks. Best drink deal was found in the Red Frog Pub; on port days, they offered half off deals for their fishbowl drinks. Each one equaled four tall drinks for only $11.47 (including tax and gratuities). This was the first cruise on the Sunshine for our Cruise Director (Lee). He is definitely a high energy guy and we really enjoyed him. The entertainment was top notch. We loved the Christmas special. Carnival has made it a priority to honor the veterans. There were at least 3 events in the dinning room where veterans could enjoy some desserts and talk with fellow veterans. Additionally, they provided a great Veteran show in the Liquid Lounge If it is possible, everyone should see Lee's dedication to our heroes. Recommend bringing a sweater or light jacket. The evenings on deck can be chilly. Also, the Liquid Lounge and MDR air conditioning work great. Food was great. We opted for "your time dinning" in the main dinning room. We never had to wait for a table. The only included venue we did not eat in was JiJi's....due to the long lines. The 24 hour pizzas hit the spot each time. If you want a place to relax in a quiet place, check out the Library lounge. This trip included stops in Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Kitts, and Amber Cove. We all thought San Juan was the best stop. A lot of Old San Juan is struggling with power issues. However, everyone there put out the welcome mat. We thought we would be able to use the free hop on-hop off trolleys. Unfortunately these are still not running. Thus, it was a brisk walk to the Forts and back....about 2 miles round trip. In Amber Cove, the Carnival created resort area is beautiful. We did a sightseeing/shopping excursion into Porta Plata and were kind of disappointed. We don't recommend going downtown on your own...it was pretty scary. Debarkation went pretty smooth. The only glitch was when people tried to "jump the gun" before their zones were called. We got through the process before our original scheduled time. I believe that was due to Lee's excellent instructions. Read Less

I'm so nauseated at Lido food and MDR food is barely passable for a few days. So very grateful for Steakhouse and Ji Ji's (both excellent). Typical Carnival experience - fun but lacking decent food. Guys burgers were disgusting. Multiple people complaining about diarreah (sp) mid-cruise. Ship was typical Carnival - fun experience, dated décor, lousy food unless you pay extra. Value internet plan did not work as well as other ships but was ok (e.g., my dog-sitter emailed me two photos of the dogs and I email back that the photos were not attached - he assured me he sent them, then next day they appeared. Apparently photos take hours to upload). Shower pressure was better than most ships on deck 8. Casino was not as good as other ships. The ultimate horseback-riding, zip-line and farmhouse lunch excursion was great - moderate paced, even an 80-year old woman was able to zip-line (her first ever!) thanks to the flexibility of the guides. I rated dining "Very Good" but that's only because the "pay-extra" restaurants were extra. Had they not existed I would have rated Dining POOR. Well done, Carnival. Read Less
