We found the experience very enjoyable from the time of embarkation till disembarkation. The staff were friendly and helpful. Entertainment was of a high standard and was excellent. Our first port of call was Noumea and I was able to catch the hop off, hop on bus at a cost of $20. This was arranged through Ports and shore excursions. It proved to be an inexpensive way to view Noumea. A must see is the War Memorial in Noumea. I would highly recommend the Cliffs of Jokin tour on the Isle of Lifou. Included in this tour is a visit to a vanilla growing farm. As this was our second cruise to these islands I would also strongly recommend visiting Jinek Bay which is also on Lifou. The snorkelling at the Bay is a fantastic experience as there is a vast amount of coral which is easily visible and as for the aquatic life, it is amazing. Read Less

Have to commend the captain as he had some very difficult decisions to make but he managed to still get us our 5 stops. Wasn't very happy with the food. Main dining room menu didn't change very much and food was not as good as I have had on other ships. Entertainment wasn't as good either. Loved the daytime trivia, seemed to always be a trivia to go to and Chloe the entertainments manager was great. Thought the evening shows could have been a lot better. Room and bathroom were plenty big enough and always clean. Staff very friendly and always ready to help. Embarkation and disembarkation went without a hitch and used Carnival for transport to airport. Shore excursions were mainly booked privately but all went very well and most enjoyable, must say Isle of Pines is now my favourite island. Loved the outside cinema and watched a few good movies there. Also happy to see a few members of staff moving towels so others could sit down. Read Less

CARNIVAL SPIRIT embodies CARNIVAL’S value for money and family themes. WATER SLIDES and SPLASH POOLS plus TWIN FAMILY SWIM POOLS appeal to the young (and not so – at 73 I can’t resist the high GREEN THUNDER SLIDE nor the 24hour soft serve machines). Dining rooms my 3 previous cruises saw food vary from good to overcooked. Wait-staff usually great – only one guy hopeless. Highlight: the nightly song and dance by wait+kitchen staff – enjoyed by most passengers. + head honcho DESSIE does a brilliant job. Latest trip saw saw gppd waot staff. one meal brilliant – othrs slightly cold overcooked food (how long had they been sitting in the kitchen? – this was the second sitting seeing CARNIVAL could not meet all requests for ANYTIME DINING) + fellow table guests just too colourful fer this introverted couple (I got the impression they thought us boring – not wrong in comparison) + meal finishing time which dictated the LATE SHOW in the theatre – not great for old dudes wanna hit the sack before 1300. Consequently LADY BLACKELDO and I abandoned the dining room for a buffet dinner after the 3rd night. Gotta say there was nothing disappointing about the buffet dinner in comparison. BUFFET food away from dinner echoed dining room. Good ….. and not so. Somehow the spacious buffets seem more crowded than other ships. There are a few bottlenecks – surely some hotshot expert can sort this out. Sunning areas spacious and numerous – maybe best of all ships. But interior lounge/relax areas a bit short. Each theatre spacious – entertainment from good …. to not so. Gyms most spacious and best equipped of all 5 lines I’ve used. I noticed this trip my one complaint re NO CHIN UP BARS had been rectified. Spacious, sunny (but with shade) ADULTS’ ONLY areas policed VERY well. This is important – I’m over sharing the adults’ only pool and spa with kids – suffering the glare of parents – can you dudes read THE SIGN ON ENTRANCE?? …. apparently not. Sensitive types may find CARNIVAL’S Las Vegas style décor a bit flash – although SPIRIT is down a step from LEGEND. But I did notice some LEGEND type wall art in the corridors not seen on previous cruises. DESTINATONS – I kinda like PORT ARTHUR and HOBART. Fer a start, they are a bit different fom our usual PACIFIC ISLANDS destinations. Plus both were great for TIGHTWADS like us who just wanna get off the ship and explore the area independently. I’m over expensive ships’ tours. This latest cruise saw streamlined check-in (cruise cards not issued – waiting at cabin doors [yeah I know what yer thinging]): quickest of all my previous 13 cruises. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was going to New Zealand. One of the things to do on my bucket list. Carnival Spirit is an awesome ship. My high lights of this cruise was the El Fresco dining out on the deck under the skies. The entertainment was awesome. The entertainment in the dining room at dinner was great. I also enjoyed the art and crafts at soulplay with Adam. I also enjoyed the Green Thunder cocktail and great value for money. Eli was very accommodating and friendly. The stateroom stewards were great. I loved the animal towels. Especially the cat one I really enjoyed. There was nothing that they wouldn't do for you. I also loved Auckland and Bay of Islands. Very picturesque. I also enjoyed the Seranite adult only section. I also loved how they are with people with disabilities I myself have very low vision and they were great with me. Well done Carnival Spirit. See you at the end of December 2019. Read Less

We chose to get away from the hustle & bustle of Christmas preparations and relax with the family (kids & grand-kids) on a Christmas cruise. The children went to kids club, some enjoyed it, some didn't. If you don't like lots of kids then this is not a cruise for you. There was plenty to do (if you want to) things like trivia, dance lessons, crafts, games, swimming, water slides, shows, parties. The food choice is very good. We ate breakfast mostly in the buffet which we found better than in the main dining room. Evenings we preferred the main dining room. The Nouveau Restaurant, for that extra special gourmet food was excellent. The staff everywhere were generally friendly and offered great service. We had a couple of things wrong in our cabin which our cabin steward got the maintenance crew to fix within an hour. The entertainment was very good with a good variety of entertainers (jugglers, magicians, comedians, acrobatics, dancers, singers. The ports were all tender ports (using lifeboats not a wharf to disembark). At Lifou we chose the Jinek Bay Marine Reserve excursion for great snorkeling. Numbers are limited so need to book as soon as you can after boarding ship. $26 p.p. There is no beach at Jinek Bay so not suitable for children unless they can swim/snorkel. Isle of Pines is beautiful where you land there are white sandy beaches within a short walk with lots of sea life (turtles, coloured fish, coral. Where you land on Mare there is not much, a few market stalls no nice beach. There is only has one excursion, a bus journey to Yejele beach for $25 per adult, $20 per child (aged 3 - 12 years). On a previous cruise there were lots of stingers on the beach and in the water. It's a beautiful beach but we didn't get off the ship there this time. Read Less

I chose this cruise because it was sailing out of Sydney and I have always wanted to do that. It was also going to New Caledonia where I haven't been before. It was my first cruise experience and I was a little nervous about doing it on my own. It was the most social holiday I have had on my own. I must have spoken with 50 people at various times during the cruise. The overall experience was fantastic. I did upgrade to a Grand Suite so my room was very nice and comfortable. I also chose the pick up at Sydney airport as I was flying in and out from New Zealand. Because I was the only person doing that they put me in a taxi instead of the coach. Great service. No problems with embarkation and disembarkation. It was probably not a good idea to be flying in and out on the same day as the cruise but lucky for me all went smoothly. I even got time to take the ferry over to Manly for a few hours before boarding the ship (they stored my suitcase). The food was pretty good. I chose to do the Chefs Table and that was a great food experience. I felt the alcohol side of this was a let down. No Cocktail just a glass of bubbles and the wine served during the meal was house wine standard. It was interesting to see the kitchen but i think it would have been better to then go to a separate dining area. It was difficult for me to hear what the Chef was saying due to the background noise. My time ashore was fantastic. Loved Mare and Isle of Pines for snorkelling and swimming. Read Less

Went with 10 family members kids and grand parents etc. Fantastic French provincial day core. Glass elevators. Elegant dining room. Rooms were adequate. Had a balcony double bed and 2 bunks. Cupboards and drawers could be better if they had suitcase space only. Bathroom adequate. Larger then the P&O's Jewel bathroom. Not as good on board activities that we expected. Could have been better like movies should have been on in the theatre instead of just on the open deck where it was raining and noisy. Most of the time no movies were playing throughout the day. In room should have had the better movies playing also. Bad movie scheduling that collided with early diner service also causing people to be late. 7.30 pm dance shows were good. comedy shows good but not enough seats in small theatre. Not as many shops on board as the Jewel also. Most on board activities were geared towards spending big bucks like art auctions that not many people showed up to and had old chipped frames obviously had not sold very often. Come on we paid enough to be there already. Pools were nice with kids shallow bit but could have been heated and needed more spas as overcrowded. Be nice to have an indoor kids playground too for bad weather. Buffets were good and elegant dining and waiters dancing entertainment a plus. Elegant dining was only opened for lunch and breakfast sometimes. 24 hour pizza and ice cream. Needed more ice cream machines in buffet area. Sore excursions were very pricy and the free hop on and off at Noumea was not advertised until the morning of after we had spent hundreds on tours. $530 for 4 for 3 days of tours. The train was good value but not the afternoon bus tour as it doubled up on the look outs we had already been too and beach not as good for snorkelling. Maree was beautiful and only cost $90 for 4 for day for bus transfer. Good snorkelling and local beach food sold. Noumea was a beautiful and clean place but very expensive for currency conversation. $20 for 2 coffees in an ice cream shop. Good shops above ferry terminal that took Australian dollars. P&O pulled up to the Warf where Carnival had bus services as docked in the shipping yard a bit painful. Good kids arcade and kids club activities, but not as good for older kids as the Jewel. Overall enjoyed our cruise and staff were helpful. Excellent frozen cocktails for $10.50 end up. Excellent gym and sauna if you can find it. Gym and adult spa closed for chlorination in the day on a rainy day, bad scheduling. Hardly any fitness classes, only expensive PT sessions. Need yoga and abbs classes on. Spa was extremely expensive minimum $175 a treatment. Mini golf never had any balls, always missing. Fun themed dress up nights, but didn't know it was Halloween until final days before and we purchased the wrong costumes. Read Less

The embarkation process was efficient but the security checking staff need to improve their manners and consideration of elderly passengers, and try to emulate their counterparts at airport security checks. Dining in Empire rooms unsatisfactory, queues to get in, noisy loudspeaker announcements and meat and fish dishes sometimes tortured. Exactly the same dishes available in better condition in La Playa grill. Price of wine unreasonably high cf my previous cruises, $14.25 per glass. The La Playa grill was well run with pleasant and efficient staff I was told there was no longer alibrary on board, a deprivation The cabin was good and steward efficient and pleasant The electronics for allocating places on tenders to go ashore at Ile des Pins broke down leading to delays, confusion, and yet more queuing. Someone at breakfast first day out warned me to “expect the atmosphere of visiting your local RSL club in Sydney “ - a very perceptive remark. It was a good time of the year to be out of Australia. So Singapore to Sydney sounded good Cruise was just average in terms of dining and entertainment. The formal dining - service was very good from Ilham and staff. The food was so/so. A number of dishes were not up to scratch - cold/cool, tough, undercooked etc. One entree, braised rabbit, tasted very much like minced beef and was served as a party pie - one swallow, and gone. Some meals however were very good. However the range of food was not great, and repetitive. On the plus side, serving sizes were generally good, not too big. Formal dining suffered from very intrusive 'entertainment' provided by waiting staff. These people are amateurs with an inflated opinion of themselves. This entertainment occurred too often, was too long and too loud. The announcer went on too long and far too often about how good her staff were. Buffet dining was also average - fruit (apples, pineapple) was of mediocre quality. Variety at lunch time was limited. Also, can't they afford a range of teas besides just Liptons? Coffee was undrinkable, but Carnival are not on their own there. Entertainment featured 2 magicians and 2 hypnotists - surely one of each is enough.we stopped going to the shows, though some were reportedly quite good. The resident singers/dancers were quite good. Guest relations were very helpful, and the sales outlets were far less pushy than on Celebrity or Holland America. Misinformation abounded, whether from the line itself, guest speakers ("Darwin does not have a hop on hop off bus)" and other passengers. Read Less

I don't think the Komodo Dragons would eat them!!!! Noted no bananas or peaches, pears, apricots. Pizza was pretty good. Snags & Pies excellent. Guys BBQ good for a change. Buffet, when tables cleared, were seldom washed. Maitre de excellent. Some entertainment - Brilliant, but 2 Hypnotists? Comedians rated from poor to excellent. Miss Houdini one of the best acts I have seen at sea. Needed indoor movies in afternoon. Kiwi cruise director: a breath of fresh air. Captains interaction with guests very good. No Orchestra???????? To see 2 destinations we had not visited before. We had been to Singapore several times so there was not much for us to do. Embarkation was lengthy. The food on the ship was only average and if you wanted better food you had to pay a lot for it. Beer and wine was very expensive and you could not take even 1 bottle on board initially. The main parts of the ship were kept very cold ( for whatever unexplainable reason). The balcony cabin was ok, but i doubt we will use Carnival again, they came a poor second to Royal Carribean. Hygiene could be improved, there did not seem to be enough hand dispensors. The boat is old and it shows in many places , perhaps if we had been on a newer ship the experience may have been better. We were hesitant about carnival but it suited for a quick trip after 5 days in sydney we did the same cruise 11yrs ago on a P&O ship but spirit was much better, we weren't planning on doing shore excursions due to the cost and we had previously been there. Only got off in noumea to get free WiFi it is very expensive on ship. We had a minor issue with seating at emerald dining room as we wanted a table for 2 but it was quickly sorted out. For my husband's birthday we booked nouveau Restaurants it was the most amazing meal best steak hubby has ever had side dishes, dessert and service was top class it was worth alot more than $45 each. All other times we ate at emerald dining room we could not fault the food, service or atmosphere, we were very very blessed to have a private tour and tasting in galley for emerald it was amazing something l had always wanted to see CYRIL the chef was lovely and explained all the ins/outs of the kitchen, produce and training we loved the opportunity and really made it special many thanks to isabella from dining room for selecting us.. I went on this ship three years ago and in my opinion it has gone down hill a bit. The food is not of very good standard on the buffet and the restaurant has the same food as the buffet with only one soup offered each day. The only good thing was the free pizzas which are the same. They do not force people to wash hands before going to the buffet as other ships do which is a huge health issue. The cabins don't get sheets changed anymore and we went for 12 nights and no more turn down service and chocolates and no change of towels in the evening if needed. The adults area have had half the cabanas taken away replaced by lounge chairs so it is hard to get one till late afternoon. The table tennis tables are outside on the deck for the wind to blow the balls to the pool deck below and they must have a room for adults to play table tennis tournaments which they don't have. The pool table is in the casino area and charge $10 a hour to play should be free. The tender service was a joke with only 4 tender boats and one way in and out so slowed the process down to a wait of 1 hour to 1.5 hours not fair on parents of children. The shows in the Palace was 10 out 10 every night was exceptional best i have seen so far. Read Less

Went on this cruise after being recomended by a friend. Embarkation and disembarkation were smooth and ran well. Cabin staff were excellent and nothing was too much bother for them. The ship for it's size had a poor selection of shops, dinning areas were adequate, with 3 different dinning areas, but food was no better than average. Entertainment and activities, were focused on kids, evening entertainment consisted of a 1hr show, bingo, card games, or just drinking in the bars with music that was too loud to be able to communicate with our company or bar tenders. Overall service was average at best, finding plces on the ship was not clearly signed or publicised, and the first 2 or 3 days was spent trying to find things to do, and were they were rather than enjoying the cruise. Shore excursions were also hit and miss, an explanation of what to expect or do on each island would have been nice, the shore excursions book told us a little, but did not always live up to expectations. More information at time of booking, regarding disembarkation, airport transfers and tours available enroute to airport would have been a help, as the ship had to be disembarked at 9am and our flight was not till 7pm, so we had to store our luggage at our expense to be able to enjoy the Sydney sights. I happened to walk into the Cruise specialist TA and ask if there were any good deals around for a cruise out of Sydney. A balcony room for 2 people for 11 nights at a total cost of $2,300 seemed like a good deal, so I accepted. Embarkation worked well. We were on the 12 - 12:30pm check-in and onboard about 12:45pm. Decoration is a matter of personal taste - think Vegas Casino and you won't be far wrong. Dining - Don't miss the Nouveau Restaurant if you like good food. We went the first night as they were offering a free bottle of wine that night. All the food was a very high standard, the steaks were exceptional. Servings were large, so go there starving - we had trouble getting through it all. The free bottle of wine was also quite reasonable, better than I was expecting. We ate at the MDR most of the time. We requested the Your Time Dining, but failed to get that. Not really a fan of the fixed dining times, but I guess at this price point it's the most efficient for Carnival. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Food was fairly bland, even the "spicy" food - adequate but not exciting as I guess you have to expect. My wife is Gluten Free, and she wasn't all that impressed. Compared to her experiences on the P&O Dawn and Aria, Spirit didn't really try very hard. Like P&O, in the MDR, she would get the next day's menu at dinner. The idea was she could pick any menu item and they would modify it to take out the wheat. P&O didn't have any difficulties with that, often providing really great dishes. Carnival Spirit managed OK sometimes, but other times we arrived for dinner to be told "couldn't do that" - only option was to then find a gluten free item on the menu. We bought the $185 wine package. Worked well and provided a reasonable saving on the price if ordered separately. One negative - they crossed off two wines that were listed on the Carnival web page and on the paper sheet we received after purchasing the package in the MDR. One wine crossed off was the only sparking, so that probably upset a few people. Music & shows - we enjoyed the music in the bars. Music Manila were good, especially when playing music from my vintage. Liked the Epic rock show, others were a bit ordinary. I was pleasantly surprised by the Chippendale Library. I expected a small pile of ancient blockbusters, but many were 2016/17 editions and some I even wanted to read. Quite few USA centric books about people I'd never heard of, but really not bad at all. Overall - pleasant enough cruise for what we paid. Read Less

This was our first cruise with Carnival. We chose this cruise to celebrate our wedding anniversary and my wife's birthday. We were very happy with the choice for the following reasons * value for money * friendly and enthusiastic staff throughout the ship * fantastic dining experience in the Empire Restaurant with good quality food, correct and friendly service and amazing entertainment by staff * comfortable, well appointed cabin * relaxing Serenity adults only area * smooth embarkation, disembarkation and shore excursion processes * good quality evening entertainment - not outstanding but pretty good as part of the overall experience. * clean and well maintained public areas * not only the acknowledgement of our special occasions by staff but the genuine joy in helping us celebrate * the efforts to cater for children. There were a number of children on the cruise but as elderly guests we were able to avoid them Really our only complaint was the expectation to pay for room service meals that were available free elsewhere on the ship. In summary the Carnival Spirit is marketed as a "fun ship". This is exactly what you get in spades. Read Less

As for embarkation & disembarkation absolutely no problems ran very smoothly. We chose this cruise as 9 day trip from Sydney to New Caledonia and Vanuatu - to experience for ourselves the cruising experience. Carnival Spirit seemed to suit but we had no real experience with any cruise ship so went largely from reviews like this. It seems all ships have good and bad reviews but Spirit seemed to meet most of our requirements. Our overall experience was very positive, and we have recommended the ship to our children who have families of their own. The outstanding feature and the thing that impressed us the most was the very positive attitude of the crew - starting from the captain and his Officers - to the staff who looked after us in the dining room and our state room. They are committed to making sure guests enjoy the entire experience - and while we are not able to compare them with any other cruise ship or line - there is no doubt their attitude is a key performance indicator for Carnival Line. After leaving such a negative report on the Ovation of the Seas in Jan I thought it only fair I should leave a report on our last cruise on Carnival Spirit in March. We first cruised on this ship back in 2001 doing the Los Angles to Acapulco cruise and just loved her then and have since been on her many times ex Australia and some 16 years later still love her. I am not sure what makes this ship so special, she sails well in seas that others do not do so well in, she has a bright decor and to be honest possibly the BEST CREW that sails out of Australia and has this consistency year in year out making for a great cruise. There is some magical formula Carnival have found with this ship ( in particular) in that all the crew are very friendly & always with a smile, they do keep the ship clean and well maintained despite its rising years. The cabins are good size, clean and have stewards that look after you as good as any cruise line and the food on board is not far removed from the far more expensive cruises you may take. The down side is that it is a family FUN ship and therefore you have kids running riot with not to many crew wanting to get involved and discipline ( ouch that is a word from the past) mind you this can and does happen on “5 star” cruise lines however providing you can avoid school holidays then in the main you can cope with “the unruly” where you can escape to the Serenity area for adults over 18 only when you have had enough. The Entertainment is good/ average however seldom do you get any better than 3rd or 4th rated entertainers on any ship out of Australia unfortunately despite the hype that is given as we all know. In addition to the good food there is several soft serve stations for both the kids and adults and forget your calories at least once and visit one of the best hamburger joints at sea ! along with the best chips ! at Guys Burger Joint , do not leave the ship without trying these and see if you can work your way through all the different hamburgers choices on offer all served complimentary and with big smiles. For those wanting specialty restaurants there are several all with a reasonably cover charge albeit there is unfortunately no Chinese restaurant on board. I can only speak for the balconies and ocean suites but they are bigger than many of the other ships and very comfortable. The lifts particularly the aft set must be the FASTEST of any ship sailing out of Australia and it is great to go to a lift without more than 60-90 seconds wait to get where you want to go to. While I am the first to be concerned with hygiene it is fabulous to go into the La Playa restaurant without the demeaning greeting of washie washie smiley smiley happy happy, having said that, not enough people take care in hand washing and it really is a case of using common sense within your own personal hygiene habits and looking out for those that don’t consider others in this area, a bit like driving a car & looking well ahead and be prepared to look after yourself. The manageress of La Playa ( she is from Romania) runs a great restaurant and has it clean and running like clockwork while at the same time everyone is happy- great job There is obviously a host of things for the children to do and for the adults apart from Bingo and Trivia there are numerous classes to take part in albeit some can attract a attendance fee. In summery the Carnival Spirit is one of the best cruise ships we have here with some of the best deals you will ever get for a cruise on a 4 1/2 star ship and it is simply a ship you must sail on to realise just how good she is and the value for money she offers. A bonus for those that like the news is you get aussie TV in your room for several days each way before the satellite becomes too weak or it re enters the foot print. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we chose Carnival because of the price and that it covered our birthdays. Our trip started well with the shuttle from the airport it was easy to use,( they found us) quick and our luggage was well taken care of at the port. Our cabin was a pleasant surprise comfortable and very clean. Later we found it to be well appointed. We sailed out of Sydney and the views from the ship were outstanding. We used most of the dining options, and enjoyed all of them. The Empire being our favourite not just because of the great food, but because of Dessi and her marvelous team who not only feed us each night but entertained us. Our waiter Godfrey sand and danced for us each night. We enjoyed the Red Frog Pub and again our waiter Eka gave us personal attention. The stops at the islands were wonderful, some with not a lot of touristy things which was nice. Our cabin stewards Turi and Andi keep our cabin in very good order and went out of their way to help us celebrate our birthdays with messages in colour pens on the mirrors. We found that all the staff we came in contact with remembered our names and made us feel like we were special. Lastly the young people who put on all the shows, Wow what talent. The comedy club, very entertaining. We travelled from Adelaide to join the ship, We are a couple late 60's and early 70's. We disembarked with ease, no rush, shuttle to the airport in time for our flight. Would we do it again...........in a heart beat. Thank you Carnival. Read Less

Thought we would try another cruise line for a change. Carnival Spirit had a small five day cruise from Sydney to Moreton Island, and return. First the good news. Getting from the airport to the ship was made easy by electing to use the Carnival airport to ship bus transfer, the unexpected bonus was the priority boarding pass which enabled a quick painless boarding procedure. Good one Carnival, very impressed. The ships decor is something to behold. If the pharaoh's statues and ancient Egyptian history is your thing you will love it, actually after the initial shock and working out that it is very Los Vegas casino style you begin to like it. The thing is Carnival call it the fun ship and this is IMO the general theme, don't take it too seriously and have fun, get into the swing of things. The staff and very friendly, nothing being too much trouble. We had a balcony cabin and it was good, very good in fact and well maintained. Under way there was little if any movement and there are more than adequate places to find a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the passage. The food in the dining rooms was average, in the buffet not so good. Being aimed at the family market the pool decks was overcrowded with children, the same for the buffet. Entertainment onboard was at best high school standard, Pay TV if you wanted a movie, drinks reasonably priced, shopping mall stocked with overpriced jewellery and watches, the clothing store has either no stock of quality items on popular sizes or poor quality goods in plentiful supply. The sweet (confectionery) shop however is a winner, obviously aimed at the kids and parents pockets. Basic question, would we travel with Carnival again? No. Read Less
