The Grandchildren really enjoyed waterworks. Entertainment was good too. Read Less

I went into my first cruise with extremely low expectations. It was my final college Spring Break week; I figured it would be mediocre, the food would probably stink and just overall be a cheap cruise. The boat is on the older side of their fleet but other than that I was completely wrong. The Carnival Elation staff was awesome. The first day I went to the dining hall and asked a crew member where I should bus my dishes to and he said, "You're on vacation, we are taking care of everything." It was exactly that, vacation. The food was excellent, the room was ALWAYS clean and the shows were great. I personally enjoyed the comedians, they were hysterical. Overall I would highly recommend a trip with Carnival. Read Less

Guess I learned my lesson. Spring break is very busy. Hard to find a deck chair, waiting in lines, and long lines to get on and off the ship. But overall the service was great, food was plentiful and yummy, entertainment was great when we could get in. This ship is beautiful and clean. The spa is awesome and a good way to get away from the crowd. Room service was really cool. Night or day I never had to wait long. Sea day brunch was really good. The ports were so fun. Cozumel, Belize and roatan were worth the time. Overall I loved everything about this vacation but I wou love to try it during a non Spring break week. Read Less

This was only my second cruise, I'd cruised on the Norweigen Sky before, for a 3 day cruise 3 years ago. I loved the norweigen sky. this cruise, was for a friend/co-workers birthday. i read alot of reviews regarding the ship to prepare myself for our 4 day cruise. I was prepared for how old the ship looked, i knew it was an older ship, so i wasnt too alarmed by the rust and outdated areas. Our room was an interior state room, on the riveria level. it was aft. i'd read reviews of interior rooms, and to bring night lights b/c it would be dark, and no where to put anything, we actually had plenty of room, lots of lighting everywhere. a couple of tv stations, most of the news stations were miami news stations, so i was caught up on miami news. i read a few reviews that mentioned that this was a small ship, so you would more likely be seasick, were absolutely correct. the other 3 members of my party all experienced seasickness the 1st day, for me, it bothered me, but i wasn't completly miserable. it didnt hit me until the last day. it was a combination of the seafood pasta and the rocking motion, that i ended up very nauseated the last night, and did vomit. the other members of my crew did vomit the first day. the resteraunt food was okay. i really enjoyed the day we had lobster and shrimp, that was very good, and the prime rib was good, but otherwise some of the food choices were okay. the breakfast was okay also. i enjoyed the omlette station in the buffet, and the seaday brunch was good also. i enjoyed that you could order as much as you wanted. some of the wait staff were very rude, and would rearrange us at our table, without first asking, they would just pick up your plate and tell you to move to another seat. Great Ship. Very clean for her age. Loved that most of the 2.0 stuff was not on it yet. The youth staff was not good at all and we were very disappointed. The rest of the staff was GREAT! Very entertaining and energetic. The lounges were clean and done nice. We would sail on her again! The only drawback to whole cruise was our cabin. We were offered an upgrade for a small fee. We were so excited. We were told it was a great area, especially traveling with a toddler. WRONG. We were right below the weights in the gym. Loud banging from morning until night. Made it very uncomfortable to relax in the cabin. The cabin was nice inside and we loved the balcony, but just could not enjoy the cabin because of the noise. Made us VERY tired for the rest of the trip, but we made the most of it and enjoyed all the other amenities. Cabin Stewardess was best on any cruise I have been on in 20 year. Food was better. Not sure if they switched over the menu to the American Table yet, but this was better than the cruise I went on last month that had this new menu. Read Less

Recently I took an adventure with my family to Mexico from Port New Orleans. The cruise was awful from the beginning. We had no one to make us feel welcome at the port and no one to help point out what direction our room was in. The first thing we did was eat, the food was awful the whole trip. As a first time cruiser I was really excited about the $300 15/day alcohol package but that was actually stripped from my wife for the rest of the cruise because the staff thought she was too drunk! She wasn't even that drunk first off and secondly, I would understand making her wait 6-8 hours if she was drunk but strip her drinks and waste our money for something so minor? Wow how strict! The best and basically only think to do was hang out by the pool all day, we have a pool at our house where I could've done that! Next when we got off the port in Cozumel, there was no beaches to swim at, just rocky beaches and tourist shops. We had to take a taxi four miles just to enjoy the beach! When we tried to get out at Progresso, they wouldn't let my wife off of the boat because they shut down her alcohol card and I guess they did not want her to drink in Mexico! The casino was PACKED and very small. The ship was filled with crazy drugged out college kids. This trip was awful and a waste of money! DO NOT CRUISE WITH CARNIVAL Read Less

If you haven't sailed with Carnival in the past you would never know anything was missing, tha being said, this was our 7th cruise and the service is going downhill fast. Embarkation was great, New Orleans could teach Galveston a thing or two. We always do FTTF and we appreciate getting to our room early, our bags came with everyone else. We did overhear there were 300 people who purchased so it could be that our bags arrived with theirs but doubtful. Room: We had a spa balcony and Our room had the shelves removed from one of the closets and had a bar which was very frustrating as there was no where to put clothes unless you brought everything on hangers. Also, the drawers stuck in the dresser and my husband had to pull them out each time. Also, we had no water pressure and cold water the first few days until it was fixed, the pressure was always a problem. Our steward was nice but never replaced our water after we finished it so we'd have to get it elsewhere. He was overworked. Food: just okay, I'm tired of the same stuff in the dining room and the quality has just gone down. Steakhouse, brunch, and pasta bar were great. I feel like the sauces in the Mongolian grill were watered down because they are normally great but they weren't this cruise. Try the huevos rancheros at brunch, it's the best. Entertainment: Best I've seen in a while, 8 seconds was very campy but good. Dancing in the streets is the best shows I've seen in the fleet, don't miss it. Ports: Cozumel - always good, went to Nachi Cocom. Belize- if you like knock offs you will love it, every shop has the same fake clothes and purses. The Belikin beer is very good. Roatan: Amazing, really a gorgeous port. We swam with dolphins at Anthony's key and it was great. I can't wait to come back. Spa: we got a spa room to enjoy the therapy rooms and thallasopool. The pool wasn't working and you couldn't get the jets to turn off or the water shower to come on. Disappointing. The top to toe package was good, Precious was good. Casino: Just say no, lol Overall: great cruise, I'm just sad at the changes. Prices are going up and service is going down to where I am looking elsewhere. I won't not sail carnival again but I will look at other lines.   Read Less

Went on my 7th cruise with Carnival. Rooms had to be corrected, group of 6 with 3 cabins, when I moved everyone around to the correct cabins, they took 2 people off of my charge account, when I went down to correct, they acted as it I did something wrong until I showed them the paperwork that i had indeed set up the charge accounts correctly.3 of the 6 of us are gold members and we received letters in our cabins the first night about the pins with the year on them, but only one of us received the pin with the letter.Very disappointed in the old tired menu they still continue to use. Went on the Glory a few months ago with their new American Dining Menu and it was great, but it hasn't rolled out to all ships yet. Entertainment was just as tired, same old shows, still showing the same movies at the "Dive In Movies" as the cruise we went on almost 6 months ago. The wait staff seemed lost, drinks sat empty, only one offering of bread on most nights no parm cheese offered with Caesar salad one night, 6 steaks cooks wrong at our table alone in one night. 2 nights I was not served my 2nd appetizer, on 2 other nights one person in my group didn't receive the correct entrée so by the time they took back the wrong item and delivered the correct one, we didn't all get to dine together. Debarkation day, room attendant knocked on the door at 7:15 am trying to get us out of our cabin at 8:15 am the water in our cabin got shut off. Boat was nice, but the staff needs an upgrade. Embarkation and Debarkation: both went quickly and smoothly. On debarkation, I liked up to get off the ship at 7:30a and was in a cab by 7:45a - - fastest departure ever! Dining Room Service: We had anytime dining, and we ate in the Crimson dining room mid-ship level 3. We were so very fortunate to have Wassanna as our lead waiter. Service every night was absolutely fantastic. She was simply amazing and I must say, Wassanna was the star staff member of the entire ship for us. Very upbeat, very nice, and incredibly personal. We really enjoyed Wassanna. On the last night, she was booked so we sat in another area, and service was somewhat like the bottom of a bird cage if not worse. So yes, Wassanna was amazing and we wish he had her on that last dinner seating. Other Service: The Spa was great. Beverage service was absolutely horrible everywhere we went, and I mean everywhere. You order a drink, and the average wait time to get it was about 15-30 minutes (no joke!). Shop service was good. Photo service was fair. Cabin steward was just ok, when we first got to the cabin there was trash and personal belongings left from prior guest, a broken light fixture (that was never fixed), and sticky stuff on the counter. Adrian our steward did clean everything but unlike most cruises, service did not impress, but neither was it poor. Food: Buffet food good, dining room food great, burger bar fantastic, Wok was the best, and Pasta Bar was very good as well. Overall, very pleased with the variety and quality of food. Guests: Seems like most guests were from areas near New Orleans, most drove to the port. The Southern slang was very prominent (and entertaining for us being from CA). We liked our cruise mates but many had terrible manners, such as breaking in line and eating at the buffet line. Entertainment: Excellent job Dream! Wow - - every show was amazing. Singing, dancing, acting, the band...all far above what we generally get on Carnival. We were most impressed with the onboard entertainment. Loved the FunForce break dance team....and the comedians! This was our 38th cruise, and 11th for Carnival, 2nd time on the Dream. Overall we were very pleased with the cruise, and for sure would do this cruise on this ship again.   Read Less

Embarkation: Pretty smooth, New Orleans is an easy port to get into. We had to wait a while to get on the ship because we arrived a bir later than we planned. Ship: The ship is nice and well appointed, with that being said, we prefered the Sunshine. We missed the Blue Iguana Taco/Burritio Bar and Guy's burger joint. Since we were on Spring Break, you had to get out early to get a chair near the pool. The water in the pool stayed too cold for me to ever get into it, bu that did not scare my kids (6 & 7) from swimming. You may want to know that there is a lot of salt in the saltwater pool. Our room was nice and kep very clean. We were on deck 10 and just a few steps from the pool, an awesome location. Food: Standard buffet breakfast, head to the back it is usually less crowded at the omlet station. Lunch-very eh to me (probably why I only gained 3.5 pounds) Dinner- we had anytime dining and usually ate around 6. The fare was good. I was really happy with the vegetarian options. Considering that I normally don't choose vegetarian options, it was a nice option. My hubby and I did the Chef's dinner one evening---one of the best experiences ever--maybe even better than Remy on DCL. It was a 3 hour dinner and I tried so many things I would never try. If you have the money, I reccommend it. Cons: The smoke from the casino was terrible, perhaps there were more smokers on this ship than we have experienced in the past. The smoke traveled the whole 5th deck. The Mongolian grill always had such a long line, I never could try it. I'm talking probably a 45 minute wait. The shows were just ok, the two main singers were sub American Idol talent. Spa-DH got sucked into the Cloud 9 pass, which he used only once. I think it was a waste, as on port days he never had a chance to get in. The Spa also ran a "Special kids Ice cream mani/pedi party" it was billed as a party, but in reality, it was not a party just an individual mani/pedi AND they had very few appointments available. Finally, the kids club was a disappointment. I blame more of this on children that did not know how to behave than the staff. My girls hated going because they said that activities would be stopped when kids did not listen to the counselors. Pros: Amazing ports!!! This was our second time sailing the same itinerary. This time we went to Mayan Princess in Roatan--fantastik time! Goff's Caye in Belize, beautiful tiny island. Mr. Sancho's in Cozumel. Mr. Sancho's was beyond words. Read Less

The embarkation process in New Orleans was very smooth and quick, at 230PM. I thought that we'd be the last passengers there, but there was line up for the passengers who did not complete their online registration. We walked up and had to wait less than a minute, and our stateroom was ready by the time we got onto the ship. The only bad thing about getting on board so late, is that the buffet is about to close as the Muster Drill is at 330PM. I was expecting to see a lot of people throughout the ship on sea days. It was a nice surprise that that wasnt the case. Sure there's your usual line ups for the buffet on Lido deck, but nothing out of the ordinary. The slow line ups were for the Mongolian Wok, as they have 2 sides with 3 woks each, so it does take some time to get through the line up. If you want a deck chair on Lido, then you'll have to be up there by 800am at the latest. On the second sea day, we had to find another spot for the day. Punchliners Comedy Club was very good. Jeff the Fun Dude is your host and is funny. Give each comedian a chance, as they were entertaining for the most part, and a couple of there were just OK. We watched 3 of the shows in the theatre. Luckily there were some decent singers on our cruise for the the Guest Talent Show. The Fitness Room was pretty empty during the mid to late afternoon - seems like a good time for the staff to be in there. The casino ventilation was horrible. Even smokers were complaining about the smoke. You could smell it down the hall on deck 5. The Lanai hot tubs were lukewarm, except there was one on the last sea day that was very hot. Roatan - we booked a Zipline and Beach excursion with South Shore Zipline. Kirby was great in communicating with me via email. We should have booked a longer zip tour. We enjoyed it immensely, as our teenagers wanted to do it again. They drove us to West Bay Beach for the afternoon, and a drink is included there - beer or non-alcoholic drink. I picked up lunch at the Argentinian Grill, while friends had gone to Celeste's. Belize - we did not book an excursion for this port. We finally got off of the ship around 1230PM, as it took a long time for 3400+ passengers to tender in. We went to the Wet Lizard for lunch and used there sporadic WIFI. The kids went back to the ship after lunch, while my wife and I walked around the shops before heading back. The ship is tendered about 5 miles off the coast and the tender takes about 20 minutes. Cozumel - we took a taxi to Mr Sancho's. We had gone there 10 years ago, and went back there. They offer a $55 all inclusive package, and an a la carte pay as you go option as well. The 2 sides are separate but you can walk between the 2 along the beach. Give yourself a little extra time to return to the ship, as the street around the port is busy with taxis and shuttles returning other passengers. Post cruise - we used Machu Picchu Tours in New Orleans to hold our luggage while we walked around the French Quarters, before they came and took us to the airport. Angel is the owner operator, and is a friendly guy to deal with. They also offer a park and cruise package. Read Less

My husband and I sailed March 8th. We arrived at the port around 10:30 and were on the Dream by 11:30. We took our carry bag by the room (2470) and left it immediately. The door was left open because the attendant had not completed the cleaning. We went up to the lido deck and began the food fest that lasted for seven days. We had early dining in the Crimson Dining room. We were at a table of 8 and so enjoyed everyone at our table. Our room was on the second deck and at the very back of the ship. We walked up one set of stairs to be in our dining room for dinner and for breakfast. We took the aft elevators to the lido deck and spent most of our time in the sun on the aft pool area. The last sea day we did have a problem finding a lounge chair but it was ok because by then we had plenty of sun and really did not need to lay out for long any ways. The food in the dining room was very good, the wait staff was superb. The food at the buffet was good. We loved the Mongolian Wok and I loved the Tandoor. The shows were delightful. We saw two comedians and they were both very funny. This is a beautiful ship that we will look forward to going on in the future many times again we hope. We loved being on the back of the ship. The noise of the anchors and lines going out at the ports did not bother us because we are early risers. The only thing I would do differently would be self assist to disembark as we could have left the ship at 8:30 instead of 11:15. We spent lots of time in the casino but did not win!!!! We did receive an offer for a free cruise for an interior cabin if we booked within 15 days. I called this morning and was advised that the cruise had to be taken by July. Thus we will not go so soon. Read Less

My friends and I wanted to do Mardi Gras but not the whole week. So this was the perfect cruise. We left on Saturday and returned on Thursday which gave us plenty of time to see the sites and parades in New Orleans. The ship is small and a little outdated but I can go on the tiniest, oldest Carnival Ship to the middle of the ocean and still have a good time. This trip we enjoyed the casino...a lot. We got to know the host and enjoyed some surprising free fun games. Our cabin was nice and clean. We enjoyed the shows and comedy. One of my favorite things on a cruise is the breakfast omelet. The line is usually a little long, but well worth it. Didn't participate in the pool activities or Carnival Shore excursions much, but highly recommend the dolphin experience in Cozmuel. Background Info: My husband and I booked this cruise as a Christmas gift for my parents. This was their first cruise (first time out of the country) and our fifth. Ship information: While the Elation is an older ship, it is very well maintained and very clean. We booked two ocean view rooms. Both were the size we expected which allowed for plenty of room to move around and be comfortable. While this is one of Carnival's smaller and older ships, it is still beautiful and is a great ship to sail on. This ship did tend to rock quite a bit more than any other ship I have been on. This may have been due to weather conditions. Activities: There were activities happening on the ship every 15 - 20 minutes or so. For people who wanted to stay very active and involved in everything, they had plenty to do. For others who just wanted to relax, there was plenty of time and space for that as well. We did have some pretty cold weather leaving New Orleans and coming back into port at the end of the cruise which toned down some of the deck activities. Service: Service on this cruise was a little less than I was used to. Our room steward never stopped by to introduce himself which was sort of a sore spot for me. I have been used to knowing the room steward on previous cruises and having them call us by name each time they see us. I was a little sad that we missed out on that this time. In the main dining room the food service was slow. There were very long lapses between getting rolls to ordering to getting our food. Our head waiter, Mr. G, was wonderful though. Port & shore excursions: We stopped in Cozumel, Mexico and Progreso, Mexico. The destinations are fairly close together but the difference between the two was amazing. Cozumel is more of the "rich" area where you can expect to find up-scale restaurants, shopping, etc. We did the Casa en la Playa, Rocky Shores excursion and LOVED it! The location was beautiful and the service was top notch. Progreso is a VERY poor area of Mexico. We didn't book an excursion here but should have. You can shop in a few shops at the end of the pier then a few more after you get on a bus and go into "town" but leaving the bus stop area is not recommended. We walked about three blocks outside of the bus station and had to turn back because we felt very unsafe. In the port area of Progreso there are guards with very large guns. Travel to embarkation Port: We drove 16 hours to the port but will never do this again. Too much driving before and after the trip! The port is in a very industrial area. While the port area is clean, the area around the port is run down and dirty. Cabin: We had cabins U21 and U25. Both are exterior window rooms. Rooms were very clean and we did not hear a lot of noise from other rooms. Dining: Service was a bit slow but the food overall was great in the main dining room. They had a great variety of food choices and CHOCOLATE MELTING CAKE! Entertainment: The Let's Rock show was good. My parents were very skeptical about going to the show because they thought it would be "corney" but they really enjoyed it too. The singers and dancers all did a great job. We did not attend the WIN show because it conflicted with other things we wanted to do on the boat during those times. They also offered other entertainment such as BINGO, Family Feud, towel animal folding, etc. There was plenty to do to keep everyone busy. Disembarkation: Disembarkation was was quick and easy. We were called one floor at a time for self-assist. We went from being called to disembark to being completely through customs in 30 minutes or less. Summary: Beautiful, clean ship. Service was a little slower than expected but was acceptable. We all had a great time. Read Less

Very disappointed in this cruise. Food was average at best. Breakfast was good, lunch was tolerable, and dinner, average at best. Entertainment was scarce. The entertainment they did have when they did have any was good. There was very little musical entertainment on the ship. The shows were okay, but not very conducive to those who got put into late dining. The mirror on the back of our door was never cleaned, was dirty when we arrived and stayed that way, although I had no small children that would have messed it up. The window was also never cleaned. The second evening there was no service at all from housekeeping. We had to request for the animals to be left in the room. In reading some of the reviews about this cruise, I wonder if we were on the same ship. There was no one I spoke to that enjoyed the cruise. The Progresso, Five-Star Resort All-Inclusive Day at the Beach was unbelievably bad. The food they served was not edible. Funny how they serve hamburgers that taste like cardboard when you are in Mexico. The loungers looked as though they were for refugees. Everything seems to be around "alcoholic" drinks and tips. Very disappointed.   Read Less

My better half and I took our first cruise on the Carnival Elation out of new Orleans. It was an overall great experience. We are from Atlanta and decided to fly into New Orleans a few days before the Sailing in order to enjoy the City for a few days first. Once we finally got to the port to book the ship, it was a quick and painless experience. Getting boarded onto the ship was quick and easy. Our luggage arrived promptly. About US - Mid 40`s, Very Young at Heart, Social Drinkers, Foodies. About the Cruise: Pros: 1. Good Food and always available. 2. Our state room was a nice size. 3. Nice entertainment. Great comedians, Amusing shows. 4. Fun Posts of call. Plenty of Excursion for all tastes. Cons: 1. Always felt like Carnival was trying to reach into our pockets. Many of the so called "events" are just sales pitches trying to get you buy jewelry, art or other things you do not need. 2. Avoid the Art Auction. Really felt like I was watching a street hustler playing 3 Card Monte the whole time it was going on. Absurdly overpriced prints being pedaled with every sleazy trick in the book. We did get a free glass of Champagne for going in though. 3. Some staff can be rude. Had one bartender and one person at guest services that clearly did not want to be bother by any of those pesky customers. 4. The boat is an older Ship and it is starting to show a little. Still very nice and clean but aging. 5. The biggest complaint was the Serenity deck. The place for Adults to get away and not have children running around. It was always very packed. Lounge chairs were not available as some people would come and claim chairs by putting stuff on them and then disappear for hours. Since this is one of the more popular areas on the boat and always crowded, Carnival should impose rules that if you are gone for more than 10 minutes someone will store your items left on the chair till you get back and free up the chairs for people that are actually there. With all that said, It was still a great time. We enjoyed every minute. For the two bad experiences we had with staff, we had great experiences with everyone else on board. We never got to enjoy the serenity deck but there was plenty of room poolside and fortunately there were not a lot of children on our cruise and the ones that were there were well behaved. In Cozumel, we did not do an excursion. Just spent the day shopping and hanging out in some great Bars along the beach. Very relaxing. In Progresso, we did the All Inclusive Excursion and that was great too. Nice Pool, Great beach with tons of sea shells to find. Great booze, food and service. We are already planning our next cruise and would do this same one again without a second thought.   Read Less

Pros: The staff on the cruise are so nice and work so hard. Really enjoyed the dining room style meals and environment. My favorite part was the adult comedy at night. Cons: The general food area was always very crowded, even during non meal hours. The music/DJ outside on the deck played the music way too loud, it was very unpleasant. Cozumel's beach was nice but way too many hustlers all over the place, it was terrible. They try and get every penny out of you constantly. I will never go back to this part of Mexico. Progesso is sketchy and dumpy. The Mexican Army were all over holding guns in there hands. Why are the cruise ships taking tourists here?? Highly NOT recommended!   Read Less

as a first time cruiser, everyone said you will be hooked! We were. Loved every moment of it! my husband being an old retire sailor, spent years at sea. He loved it. we were traveling with 3 other couples and all our rooms were nearby. We had the Empress Deck. they had interior rooms. We had a $30 upgrade to an ocean view. Sailing out of new orleans it takes 8 hours to get out of the channel into the gulf. the further down you are, and the closer to the aft, will give you a smoother ride. we had room E160. one windy day we went up to the top decks, closer to the front of the ship. That thing was bouncing all over and we were so glad our rooms weren't up there. The crew on the ship was the most helpful, polite, friendly folks ever. Our room steward, Sokate, was amazing. I could get spoiled having my room cleaned not once, but twice a day. At nite while we were at dinner he would come in clean bathroom and fix the bed, turn down covers, leave chocolates, and leave the bed light on for us. Ronald and Patrick our waiters in the Inspiration dining room, were also top notch. two days we had windy weather and you could feel the ship moving from side to side. My sailor said if you worry yourself about being seasick, you will get sick. he said its all in your mind. not once did i ever feel sick. The food was fabulous, the service, the drinks, all were extremely good. the entertainment choices each evening was great. We truly had the best vacation we have ever had! our friends has already found a cruise for Feb 2016 for us leaving from Charleston to the Bahamas for 7 days. 5 days is just not enough!   Read Less

This was my 12th cruise (of 19) with Carnival. There were four of us (high school friends) and two were newbies (the other was on his second cruise). We enjoyed everything except the slow service in the dining room at dinner on two of the five nights we ate there. Unfortunately the slow service was made worse by the couple we were seated with (it seemed they were able to talk continuously without breathing & when adult beverages entered the picture, it only got worse). Oh well ... we enjoyed the buffet and grill the other nights and it didn't really matter. Lido Deck bar service was awful. Absolutely awful. I resorted to telling the servers that their tips would improve if we were served quickly & it made an incredible difference. We tried going to the bar to buy our own and realized it wasn't the servers who were slow. The entertainment was so-so at best: worst piano bar/player ever! -- the shows had potential but the directors just couldn't keep from going too far and ruining them. Only Edd (guitarist/singer extraordinaire) brought the entertainment rating up. He was awesome, talented and friendly -- and would play more often if I was running the show! Can't wait to sail again. Booked in November, but I'm thinking I may need something else in between! P.S. Embarkation and disembarkation were both fine. Quick, painless and organized. Read Less

We travelled as a party of 4 adults [2 couples]. Problems encountered include: - Although we had booked the holiday as a group we were assigned to different tables in the restaurant. This took the restaurant staff about 30 minutes to resolve. - Service in the restaurant was slow and erratic - we continually had to prompt staff to offer us bread, take our order for wine, offer us coffee. On one occasion we had waited 30 minutes for our main course only to have to send our meals back because the food was stone cold [acceptable if a salad but not for lasagne]. - Service in the bars and on deck was slow. Waiting 20 - 30 minutes for a drink after placing an order with a waiter was not unusual. There seem to be too few waiters for the number of guests. - to traverse Deck 5 it is necessary to walk through the Casino which reeks of tobacco smoke. If you are a non-smoker then using the casino can be an unpleasant experience. Good things : - good shows in the theatre plus good music in the main lounge. - comfortable cabin and good service from the steward, - overall quality of food was good. - service in the cafeteria was good. Overall conclusion is that I would not book with Carnival again, nor would I recommend them to family and friends. Read Less

We booked our cruise just a couple of weeks before departure and received a very good price for a balcony room on deck nine. Embarkation was a little crazy. Everyone prints out their luggage tags and places them on their luggage ahead of time, but when we arrived, some guy from Carnival had us fill out another one and then ASKED for a tip! There was a very long line to check in and it took about an hour to get through the line and onboard. The room was very typical of any balcony room on Carnival, but the bedding pillows and decorative throw were very worn. The room steward did a pretty good job of keeping the room clean; although, I am not sure he always knew when went to dinner. Unfortunately, we had a room that adjoined another and we could hear every word the people in that room said. They were a group of young adults, and their music at times was quite annoying. Be sure to ask for a room that does NOT adjoin another! Their were plenty of places on the ship to eat. We dined every evening in the Scarlet Dining Room and our service was impeccable! Our waiters were probably the best were have ever had on a cruise, and we have cruised NCL, Celebrity, and Carnival several times. We never had to asked for anything, the service was prompt, and the food very good. I thought the food was better than our eleven-night cruise last September on Celebrity out of Rome. We ate lunch a couple of times in the pasta bar.... delicious. The buffet is typical and not fancy. The burgers and pizza were great. We did not try the steak house as we just don't think we should have to pay additionally for dining. The entertainment was very good. I have a music background, and I thought the musical productions were pretty good...... not Broadway quality, but pretty good. I particularly like the set designs, and I liked that I could understand the words when the songs were sung. So often you can't understand the words on these loud and high-energy numbers, but the singers did a good job. We had just booked a cruise another Carnival cruise out of LA for October to Hawaii, and when I went to the future cruise desk to ask some questions about it, I found out that they were offering a $200 onboard credit that Carnival will not give us since we had booked the cruise two weeks ago. Apparently, you have to book while onboard to get the credit even if you have the low-price guarantee. Pretty sorry of Carnival in my opinion. We did enjoy the cruise very much, but I am very disappointed that Carnival would not honor the onboard credit for our future cruise. Read Less

This was our 14th cruise, and 3rd on Carnival. Overall, we enjoyed it, and it was a big improvement over our last Carnival cruise. Embarkation: It seems that most passengers embarking in New Orleans drive to the port. There is a 6-level parking garage that made it very easy to check your bags, park and board the ship. We did not pay the extra $50 to buy "Faster to the Fun" express embarkation, and for us, that was a good decision. When we got there (approximately 1:30), the fast line was longer and slower than the "normal" line. Overall the food was very good, with the notable exception of their Prime Rib. I didn't know you could mess up prime rib, but they did. My husband sent his food back one night because it was cold, but otherwise it was quite good. We regret that we did not discover the Pasta Bar until the last day. You fill out a form indicating the type of pasta, sauce, and add-ins, and they custom-make it for you. It was delicious and very fresh. Another hint: the Tandoor station on the back of the Lido deck never had a line. In the mornings when the other lines were long, Tandoor had a smaller buffet selection of standard breakfast items, and no line. On embarkation day, the Lido was very crowded with long lines and we had to hunt for tables, but the rest of the week was much more manageable. The entertainment on this ship was excellent, and a huge improvement over the last Carnival Cruise we took. There were comedy shows most nights. We learned to get there early because it was often full. We saw 2 of the show lounge productions which were also excellent. And their Love and Marriage show was a hoot. The last sea day, the Cruise Director had a Q&A session about life on the ship that was very interesting. We only took one shore excursion, in Cozumel. Almost all of their shore excursions depart at 8:15, which seemed too early for us. If anyone enjoys jogging or a good walk, Costa Maya was a great place for it. There is a wide median with a path down the middle right outside the port gate, connecting to a palm-lined median that continues down another street. When that ends, you can head toward the lighthouse and further if you want. It was all flat and felt very safe. As with other ships, the Wifi is extremely expensive, and we almost never saw anyone using the many computers on board. Some of the places in Cozumel would give you their code if you buy something, but the one we used was pretty slow. I had no luck getting connected in Costa Maya. In Roatan, the port area will sell you a unique wifi code for $5 for an hour or $10 a day. Though nobody likes to pay for this, it was a speedy connection and well worth the $5. Disembarkation went very smoothly. You can either put your luggage outside your room the night before and claim it when you get off the ship, or just carry it off yourself. We put ours outside the room, but were a little after the 11pm deadline, and it was still sitting there the next morning. No problem. It was our fault for being late. Carnival, like other cruise lines, has made cutbacks which are sometimes apparent. There was no ice bucket in our room, although our cabin steward brought one when we requested it. They don't give receipts for your purchases unless you specifically ask for one. If the dining room had a wine steward, we never saw him. Our waiter took our wine order and somebody else brought it. They no longer put a bread basket on your table, but dole it out to you. And lines to get a drink on the Lido deck were lengthy. (Try the Serenity area if it's open). Overall, it was a good cruise and I'm glad we took it. My main complaint was the smoking on Deck 5. The casino reeked of smoke even when the tables and machines were closed. It filled most of the 5th floor. A lot of the activities are in the Oceans lounge of Deck 5, but another smoking area was on the Promenade deck just outside this area. Every time someone opened that door, anyone inside got hit with a wave of second-hand smoke. Ugh. Read Less
