Regarding our vacation on Carnival Magic 6/16, my family of six will not set sail again with Carnival after our experience this week. There were numerous disappointments all week long, starting with the delayed departure and loss of a port.
Since we are from NC, we had planned to drive through the night and arrive just before boarding. After we have packed up and ready to hit the roads, we see an email saying there was an emergency and the ship would be delayed Saturday. We take off anyway because the email said there would be an update although the time given was not exact and we were already on the road to hear that the next update would by 9:30 in the morning. Since that’s all we knew, we continued to Florida anyway. It took us doing some extra research online to find out more details later in the evening and discovered the embarkation would be much later, so we were forced to get a hotel room for the night.
Saturday morning, we find out the most disappointing news yet. Carnival had removed our favorite Port, St. Thomas, from our itinerary. St. Thomas was my reason behind booking this cruise. We had been once before on Carnival Sunshine four years ago and absolutely loved it. We had dreamed of seeing this island again and had planned this cruise on Magic for over a year and a half knowing we were going to St. Thomas again. My family of six was very disappointed. By this time, we are already in Florida, time taken off work and money spent on this cruise and Carnival is already disappointing us. And you thought it would make it better refunding $50 credit plus $15 on food? That miniscule amount of money in no way compensates for what we lost from our vacation. Yes, part of the delay was because of a medical emergency, but a significant part of it was also because of maintenance issues meaning the ship could not go full speed. That’s not an unexpected surprise that is not your fault, that’s something you should be fully accountable for. Simply saying “Sorry” and throwing $65 at the problem doesn’t cut it because your ships are not running correctly causing us to lose an island from our trip.
So why would Carnival take away our favorite island stop, St. Thomas? We heard because it was further away but that still didn’t make any sense. It was not even the first on the itinerary.
Due to this change in time, it was complete chaos at the Port. I have pictures of the disaster. We took a shuttle from Park Port Canaveral that should have been a 5-minute drive to the Port and it turned into 1 ½ hours of sitting in traffic. Before that we had stood in the heat of the parking lot for about 30 minutes because no shuttle could make it back to the parking lot because of the chaos. The workers at the Port were angry as well over the chaos. Thankfully there was someone passing out tiny bottles of water, but it couldn’t get passed out fast enough to people standing in the heat ready to pass out.
Let’s move on next to Dining Room. We chose At Your Time dining due to having four kids involved in Circle C and O2. One night we had to wait 30 minutes, another night, we had to wait over an hour! One of our sons took the beeper to the hostess and said it was not working but was told it was. We waited even longer. Finally, my husband goes back to hostess and all of a sudden, they have a seat for us, and our party written down with several others at the hostess station on a post it note. I can only assume that they knew there was a problem paging us, but never came out to get us and just waited for us to complain a second time. All this time, we have to sit listening to deafening music in the entry lobby. We walk in and over half of the dining room is empty. We later get the worst service. One thing I wanted my family of 6 to do every night together was have dinner together and talk about the day. That night activities were already starting, and kids bailed out of dinner by the time we were able to sit down. We had waited so long I couldn’t blame them for wanting to leave. Service was horrible. The hostess later asked me what was wrong, and I told her. We later get a cheese platter delivered to our room I guess to apologize. I had went to bed early, asleep in the bed and someone walked into the room and delivered it waking me up. I was in my PJ’s, no privacy at all after 9pm. We didn’t eat the platters.
Staying with the food areas, of all the cruises we have been on, I’ve never stood in line in the buffet areas as long as we had to on Magic. You really need to figure out a new arrangement. There were long lines everywhere we went to eat lunch. And what’s wrong with those floors in Lido? I slipped so many times walking and saw others doing the same. Once I almost really got hurt catching myself on the wall.
Let’s talk about these drink plans. My husband and I purchased the Cheers for ourselves and Bubbles for our kids. First of all, we couldn’t start our Cheers package until later than we could have yet still paid full price for day one. The worst part though is there was absolutely no place on the ship besides the evening dining room that our kids could get a soda without sitting at a bar. Seriously, Carnival? Are you already promoting alcoholic drinking onboard with children? Our last visit there my son had went to one bar so much a bartender actually told him not to come back. It was hot, and he was thirsty and we bought the package. He had every right to get his drinks there when you don’t have non-bar areas to go to. This was in the Red Frog Pub Bar. We have traveled Royal Caribbean and children were able to use drink machines at any time around the ship. Maybe Carnival needs to copy this idea. And seriously, what’s up with signing a receipt after every drink even a Coke after we have bought your packages? I get you want extra tips but my kids had no spending rights on their cards, so they didn’t need to sign a receipt with every soft drink they ordered. Also, why can’t the kids get a bottle water with their Bubbles package?
What is wrong with the temperature in the room cabins? We had two rooms and our room with a balcony was much, much hotter. We couldn’t enjoy our bigger room because it was so hot. We reported it to housekeeping that sent someone that left us a cute little card that said it was working to Carnival’s Standards. According to many guests we met, they also had the same issues with one even said she had them check her room THREE times. My husband and I could not sleep at nights for sweating so much. Our sheets were drenched every morning. The last night I even tried propping open the balcony door to feel the breeze of the ocean with my head at the bottom of the bed, so I could breathe fresh air and not feel like I was suffocating in that stuffy, hot room.
Now onto the worst part of the cruise. Thursday evening on Cruise Elegant night, my family had been sitting in Northern Light and my daughter and I chose to take a break to the restroom on deck 3. On our way back to the restaurant, a very large man threw up and splattered many people in the bar area. I was covered down my bare arms and down the front side of me. Luckily my daughter was standing behind me and it only got her feet. I was so stunned I didn’t know what to do. Several were affected. One of your Carnival Crew members actually came up to me and said, “Are you okay?” Seriously? Okay? I have SOMEONE ELSE’S VOMIT down the front of my dress on elegant night. I was disgusted and all you can ask is if I’m okay? I said “I need to go to my room and change”. I didn’t feel like having a conversation in front of many others covered in puke. My daughter and I take off to our cabin to realize we left our keys at the dining room table. Thankfully our room attendant let me in. To be asked if I was “okay” was insulting. Who is okay with being vomited on by a complete stranger? I know your company cannot control another man puking on guests but at least train your crew to effectively handle the scenario. I never finished my meal that night. I could only think of bathing and getting into clean clothes. I was so stunned this happened it took me a while to reconsider going back out for fun.
It’s great to market yourself as the cruise line for partiers and hard drinkers, but if a passenger is drinking so much they can’t control themselves and puke all over multiple families, your bartenders should be responsible enough to cut them off before that point. Read Less
