We decided on the Carnival Fantasy because of the Panama Canal Transit. We had never wanted to cruise Carnival because of the reputation of "Party Ship" but the cost was great and the timing was perfect so we took a chance on the September 16th, 11 day cruise out of Mobile, AL. This ship was so far above my and my husbands expectations. It had just received very bad news coverage from a disgruntled inspector (after we purchased the cruise), and we were already risking the party atmosphere. We were so shocked to find not one of the things we had read or heard about the ship to be true. The staff was amazing and went above and beyond to know who we were and how to make each moment more enjoyable. This was a Journey cruise (over 10 days) so we were with this staff longer than most. We found relationships built that were genuine and positive. The captain was great at keeping us in touch and informed which made it a positive interaction as we sailed. The meet and greet with the staff was elegant and professional – as well as very entertaining with the professional ballroom dancers and Shipmonk’s performing the perfect mood setting music. Drinks were flowing and appetizers and staff met with the elegant ambiance they had set for the evening. The dinning staff was attentive to our every need - greeting us by name and having the things we enjoyed on the ready. Seon, Lady Ann, Pratama, Kataporn and Ola (short version of Ola's name) were dining room stars! Singing, smiling and ensuring our water was always topped off, our sides were always ready and available and any extra’s or additions were cared for. The cleaning staff was amazing! They were constantly wiping windows/handrails/glass as well as vacuuming and cleaning floors. Seti cared for our stateroom in way that made it a place to look forward to coming back to so we could see the surprises he had laid out for us! Selva was one who constantly worked! From the day we got on board and he was getting the luggage out … to meeting him all over the ship as he cleaned, vacuumed, mopped, dusted and always smiling and wishing us a good day. It was a pleasure to have Seti and Selva on the cruise! There was nothing about our Carnival ship that lived up to any negative reputation which had proceeded it. It was clean, run well, fun, relaxing and enjoyable. Marty was the Cruise Director for the first part of the trip and Rico the Cruise Director for the last. They were amazing! Why different Cruise Directors on one cruise? There was a special event we never know about held where Carnival and St. Jude’s are in a partnership, Carnival does various little events on ships to raise money they give to St. Jude’s. This was so touching to learn about. We had our fund-raiser onboard and our ship raised over $15,000 for St. Jude! It was incredible to be a part of. But, back to the reason Marty left the ship mid-way. Marty was selected as one of a very few Cruise Director’s to go and present St. Jude with the monies raised, as well as getting the opportunity to meet with some current families at St. Jude and talk with staff to see exactly how the monies are used to help each family personally. It was a blessing to learn of Carnivals involvement with such a wonderful purpose. Once Marty left and Rico took over – it was just as amazing and Rico’s heart and joy were evident in his calling as Cruise Director. The promotion mid-trip allowed us all to see how much each person values their various roles onboard. The majority of the staff was just as much as professional and fun while being available to complete whatever task was on hand for them. Even in the photo department the ship was not pushy in any way and we found Fresca was so kind and yet fun and willing to capture a great shot, or let us move on by when she saw it would be an interruption. That alone was amazing. The ports of call were different on Carnival than other cruise lines. They ensure you have a wonderful experience if you are even just visiting the port. It was cleaner and easier to get off and back on the ship than others we have sailed. The excursions were well explained and when we did take them (we did not at each port) the staff was highly educated in the experience we were about to embark on. The transportation was in new buses with air conditioning and bathrooms, locations were clean and organized and it was safe and so fun and entertaining! Overall we had so many positive experiences and interactions on our Panama Canal cruise we were amazed. It wasn't all perfect, as with anything when you are with people in the same place for 11 days there will be a snafu to two, but the good was actually great and we are looking forward to taking future cruises with Carnival - hoping to run into some of the same staff again to catch up and see how they are doing – as well as meeting up with people we met on the cruise for creating new memories to last a lifetime. Thank you Carnival for completely changing our impression and view of Carnival cruise line. We are glad we took a chance and grateful for the amazing Panama Canal crossing experience! Read Less

Embarkation Smooth! If you're driving to the Mobile Alabama port get there early. We arrived one hour prior to our "scheduled" time and got one of the very last parking spots. Upon pulling up to the garage you'll be directed to one of several lanes where the baggage handlers will collect the bags you don't want to carry on. Make sure your luggage is clearly marked with your stateroom printout tags. Then it's straight on to park. Traversing security you'll find the metal detectors are very sensitive (good). Getting through security was a breeze, about 20 minutes between parking and stepping on board. If you're waiting for your stateroom to be ready, one option is to grab lunch at the Lido Deck buffet (10) It will be busy. Ship experiences – food and drink Guy's burgers is awesome! I could eat there for every meal. The buffets are average. The dining room was very inconsistent. Two meals were good, one was fantastic and two were terrible. Of the terrible ones, the stuffed palermo was grossly under cooked, and a seafood plate of calamari, scallops and shrimp had all of three small pieces of each seafood with a huge serving of noodles making it hard to even find the tiny morsels. Breakfast in the dining room is great. The "your time dining" was really a "stand in line for a pager, then wait a half hour for a table dining." Onboard Activities The main pool is good, get there early if you want a lounge chair. The water slide was enjoyable even for this 50+ year old :-) Entertainment Pauly, the Cruise Director is amazing. Non-stop energy and charisma. The main stage show was pretty good, the comedy show was great especially since the comedian stayed away from politics. So tired of that. The piano bar was disappointing compared to Zack Daniels on the Carnival dream a few months ago. Service and staff Service was very good. Budi - our room steward was awesome. Dining was good, and the bartenders tried very hard to keep up. Carnival needs to hire more. They shifts they make them work are to long. The bartenders try so hard to be "up" but you can tell they are exhausted. Ship Design & Cleanliness She's carnivals oldest, and it shows. The layout doesn't flow like the newer ships and causes congestion. The shopping area seems almost as an afterthought kind of jammed into the front of the ship right by the main theater. There were constant problems with the elevators. Both atrium elevators were out of service for most of the cruise, and occasionally one of the four remaining forward elevators would be down. When underway there's an oscillation you can feel, presumably from the propellers. It’s a shaking sensation, clearly not the gentle rocking from the waves. It’s quite strong in some areas of the ship, to the point of being annoying. Overall cleanliness is good, the public area bathrooms could be kept cleaner and maintained better. One of the men's rooms sinks on the eighth floor only had scalding hot water. Cabin The cabin was big enough, the bed was two twins jammed together to make a king. It was reasonably comfy. We discovered there are a select few cabins labeled "inside" which are really outside cabins with two portholes. Score! Cabin with a view for an inside price :-). The bathroom was clean and reasonably big. The handle on the sink was broken, they promptly fixed it for us. Mobile If you're there during Crawfish season, or just dig craft beers and cocktails check out Haberdasher, 113 Dauphin St. in downtown Mobile. During crawfish season they have a free feed with a beverage purchase on Sundays. Cozumel Commercialized. You must walk through a "mall" filled with motivated sales people before you get off the dock. Get a very good 1hr massage for $25 - $40 U.S. in the shopping area across the street from the port. Fantastic Scuba diving! Really fantastic. Need more time in port here. Call for all to be onboard was 3:30pm. Pregreso Progreso is small, extending just a few blocks south of the water and 5 or 6 miles east/west following the shoreline. The dock is connected to the mainland by a 7km, 4.5ish mile pier. Buses run every 10-20 minutes, and the 15-20 minute ride from the dock will drop you off just a block and a half from the beach. There are many souvenir stores just as you step off the dock before you can get on the bus. same shtick as the mall on the dock in Cozumel. We scurried through these as we knew we'd have to walk back through them before you can get back on ship. We found better deals in town. Had fun walking around and visiting with the locals. Get a massage on the beach or elsewhere for $25 U.S. The beach is beautiful with food and drink service to the beach from Los Henequenes restaurant and bar just across the street. Wish we had more port time here. The ship was back underway by 4pm. Summary A video review is in the works and upon completion I'll post a link to it, if Cruise Critic will let me update this review. Great cruise for the money. To a degree we lucked out because the weather was fantastic, and sailing was very smooth. Cozumel is very commercialized. I'm a Scuba Diver and diving there is fantastic. Progreso was interesting, much less touristy, although something tells me that's going to change. Fun shopping for trinkets and haggling over prices. A real old Mexico atmosphere, yet we still felt safe. We enjoyed this cruise, however if one gets impatient easily it may not be the best choice. The Fantasy is showing her age, and clearly needs some maintenance. Its congested, especially the pool on the lido deck on sea days and the dining room line can wrap around the atrium. The crew, both officers and front line, are friendly and work very hard to make up for some of the ships shortcomings. I've been on much more luxurious vacations and ships, but for the money this is hard to beat. Especially if you don't mind using the stairs once in a while. Read Less

After a challenging year, my husband and I were looking forward to an affordable getaway in the sun. We drove from Southern Ontario, Canada to Mobile, Alabama, US to board the ship. Mobile felt welcoming, safe and uncrowded. Embarkation was the smoothest of our 9 cruise experiences... pay-by-text parking with plenty of spaces, efficient and attentive staff... it was 15 minutes from our arrival to boarding the ship. Brilliant! This smaller ship - the eldest in the Carnival fleet - is lovely and well-maintained. Everyday, throughout our cruise, we saw maintenance personnel working on painting, shampooing, repairing, etc. This is a sea-going vessel of 20 years, hosting thousands of guests per week, so a few signs of wear and tear are both realistic and charming. I cannot see any reason to complain... particularly when you consider the vacation price. Great value! We aren't usually keen on ship designs that include split dining rooms (much preferring the layout of the Panamax ships like Carnival Legend), because we find that it interrupts movement/flow of people, resulting in crowding. However, that wasn't an issue on this ship because of the smaller passenger capacity - a pleasant surprise! There were rarely issues with finding a seat in the Lido buffet, around the pool (if you're flexible about location) or at the very-popular comedy shows. Our cabin - an aft-facing oceanview - was clean and in good working order, with a comfortable bed and accommodating attendant, Artawa (who learned our names and preferences very well). I would recommend a change of the shower curtain and the art work above the bed, which both looked a tired/worn, to keep things fresh. We registered for and received flexible dining, where we could have a private table for two on our own schedule. The new American-inspired dining room menu is less extravagant than in years past, but still very good... especially if you are willing to try their locally-inspired options. On our first night, we were assigned to an excellent dining room team - Nelson with Octavian and Darma - and opted to request them each night for the duration of the cruise. Since we prefer to eat dinner after 8:00 pm, there was never a wait time and we got more face-to-face time to get to know our team. Every night, Nelson made a recommendation to match with our wine selection, or to match our experience from the day, and they were all great. We were so pleased that we chose to leave an extra $100 USD in cash gratuities for them, in addition to our prepaid amount. The key to the highly successful entertainment team was the AMAZING cruise director, Paully: hilarious, energetic and very friendly. We had a completely unique cruise experience (even compared to our previous sailings with Carnival), because we chose to attend events that we would normally skip, in order to see him, and those experiences became the highlight of this vacation - 80s and 90s music trivia in the Atrium, Cruise for St Jude, deck parties, etc. This vacation really was about spending time relaxing in the sun, so much time was spent enjoying Serenity and the Lido pool deck areas. In Cozumel, we purchased a Downtown Shopping and Beach Excursion from Carnival and had a great time. The host Ricki and the driver Hector were both knowledgeable and accommodating. There were two shopping stops - one more commercial with mass-produced trinckets at posted prices, and one more traditional with handicrafts at negotiated rates. The beach club was excellent - all facilities (pool, beach, chairs, change rooms, bathrooms, wifi, snorkels, etc) were included and well maintained. There was also a bar and restaurant for an additional fee, which we did not try, and some on-site shopping. We enjoyed the beach and were particularly impressed with the lifeguards and snorkeling staff who interacted very well with all the guests. We did participate in a local Tequila tasting and purchased a nice bottle of locally-made Anejo as a souvenir. In Progreso, the ship docks out in an industrial area a few minutes' drive from downtown (shuttles are available). It was a very hot day, so we chose to only explore the small duty-free area right beside the ship and, then, get back onboard, taking advantage of the nearly-empty public spaces. We noticed several other guests chose to stay onboard as well, with many finding a quiet corner to enjoy a board game or a book. So relaxing! If I had to recommend two improvements for this ship: 1) Main theatre - reconfigure the seating to improve the view. There isn't enough elevation between rows, particularly on the balcony, to allow an unobstructed view of the stage. 2) Add Alchemy bar (perhaps replacing the one beside the comedy club venue) - We missed those unique cocktails from our previous cruises. Overall, we had a fun and relaxing time. Our cruise director and dining room team made the experience extra special. The warm weather was great, and the vacation value cannot be matched. Highly recommend! Debarkation was handled very well. There was a short wait where they had to slow down the flow of people through the immigration check point, but that was no inconvenience. Paully walked down the line of guests, explaining the delay and making sure we were still smiling. The terminal was extremely efficient, and we were sitting in our car (which was surprisingly cool considering the hot weather that week) within a short time... and wishing we were boarding again! Seriously, we called long-distance from our Canadian cell phones to see if Carnival was sold out for that next departure. In Mobile, we visited the USS Alabama and USS Drum historical site, which was interesting, affordable and well-staffed to handle the influx of cruise visitors. We were given a discounted entry rate and spent hours exploring. We left late in the afternoon and started to make our way back home (to plan our next cruise adventure). We're looking forward to our next opportunity to book with Carnival. Read Less

First time cruiser excited about seeing Cozumel. I knew beforehand smoking was allowed in the bars and the casino, but I did not know the whole ship would smell like an bar! The lounges and casino do not have physical doors, The entry is wide open and the second-hand smoke travels throughout the ship. I will never go on another cruise unless it is non-smoking or doors and ventilation is installed. Also, there were so many drunk people even though it was not spring break time. I saw one college girl vomit onto a towel on the Serenity deck. The pool was very small and i would never take children on the cruise since there is such a drinking/partying atmosphere. I saw many, many women in the hallways and hamburger restaurant in only bikinis. Appropriate cover-ups were not enforced. The ship was clean and our dining room waiters Eric and Jorge were fantastic. It was hard to find your way around especially since the stairs are not labeled and you never knew which floor you were on. Floor level signs would have been a huge improvement. The onboard entertainment is what I would call cheesy. The bingo was $40 for three bingo cards and lasted less than 10 minutes of actual calling time. The website lists many restaurants, but in reality most of them were in the same cafeteria and each area was labeled as a separate restaurant. For example the ice cream machine was given a separate restaurant name. The coffee shop and sushi counter seemed to be tucked away in a small out of the way area and hard to find. The jewelry and pictures were pushed heavily. The pictures taken were displayed haphazardly and were moved around so much you could not keep up with your pictures to purchase. Read Less

This was the worst vacation I’ve ever been on. Which is sad because this was our honeymoon. There was absolutely nothing to do. The food was mediocre at best and it was rarely at it’s “best”. The best food on the ship was Guy’s Burger Joint which closes pretty early in the evening. Our room was nasty upon entering it for the first time. It looked like someone has rubbed sticky food over the remote control for the TV. When I went to draw the curtains back there was only a metal wall instead of a window. I don’t recall that ever being stated in the room details. Also there was only one outlet. By day two of the cruise we were both more than ready to get off the boat. We are both, of course, sitting here hours after we are supposed to disembark, waiting because everyone is so incompetent. Never again. Read Less

The ship was dirty and the food was terribly disappointing. It was like a bad night at a Golden Corral just before they throw the food out. The wait staff and stewards were very friendly, but 2 of the 3 times I went to Guest Services, I dealt with someone who was totally incompetent. I don’t know if this was a training issue or personnel issue, but the attendant was totally unfamiliar with the what the “First to the Fun” included or even what it was. We also purchased the “Chef’s Table” experience. Again, the service was great but most of the food was terrible. The pro was not with the food itself, but with the execution. The wagyu beef in particular was over cooked and drenched in what tasted like McCormack’s sauce. We got back to find that Carnival double-billed all are expenses onboard and sent my bank account into chaos. We will cruise again, but never with Carnival. Read Less

First let me say that we had bad weather almost the entire time which was not Carnivals fault but the whole boat smelling of sewer, the elevators not working half of the time, and people throwing up on the stairs and It getting left there were all very gross and off-putting. Our itinerary stated that we had an extra fee associated with the dining room we were assigned to and this being our first cruise, we spent every meal in the Lido buffet where the fool was golden corral quality at best. Cozumel was overpriced and the sales people were very aggressive and we had to pay a "fee" to enter a free beach. Every onboard activity was laced with a sales agenda and we were stuck on the boat an additional 9 hours due to "weather conditions". we paid over 150 in tips to people we never even met. I will say that our room steward was excellent, thoughtful, and friendly. I guess cruising is not for everyone. We drank a lot of overpriced alcohol and gambled in the casino where ashtrays were as esteemed as gold bricks but other than that, there did not seem like there was much else to do. I will never get on a boat the rest of my life but experienced cruisers told me that the cruise we were on was not typical of most cruises. I still feel traumatized from the fact that we couldnt just walk away when the going got rough and that is my opinion of this particular boat. Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise because we saw a deal online and have never been on one before. So we figured we'd give it a try. Room service was great. Our room was always clean and we always had clean towels. The food was good but we just wish there could have been more selections to choose from. Also we enjoyed going to Serenity to get away and relax. I do have to point out some things that could use some improvement. There is only one swimming pool for over 2,000 passengers. We never were able to go swimming because the pool was always over crowded with kids and teenagers and so were the hot tubs. There should be at least three olympic size swimming pools on the ship. Grown ups like to go swimming too. There should have been more activities for grown ups. It's great that there is a lot of entertainment for the kids and teenagers but about the only option for adults is the casino. Since neither of us are into gambling, there wasn't much to do. Even the night clubs are geared for the younger crowd. How about a ballroom where you can dance with your partner to romantic music? Adults need to have some of it as well. Also, the basic package should include a bit more and the site should be a bit clearer on what it does and does not cover. When we booked, our understanding of the trip was that, when we were in port, there would be easily accessible beaches for the passengers to visit. It wasn't until we were onboard that we learned that these beaches could only be reached by booking a shore excursion. Which, of course, cost extra! The menu needs to be extended and there should be more of a beverage choice. And the prices of alcohol drinks need to be reduced. We paid $1,200 for this cruise so we feel that we should have gotten a lot more in the package. But since this was our very first cruise we still had a good time. Read Less

So we just returned from a cruise on the Fantasy. We experienced both positive and negative aspects of the ship and staff: PROS: 1) friendly staff. We rarely encountered our steward and didn’t need any additional assistance, but it was nice to have the bed made and clean towels. The staff was nice and it was apparent that they kept the ship clean despite its shortcomings. 2) delicious food. The dining room had great selections. We are huge fans of the American Table series. There were a few duds, but the crab cakes were delicious!!!! 3) bartenders. The bartenders at the atrium bar were attentive and remembered our specific preferences. CONS 1) the ship is gross. The ship is the oldest in the fleet and it shows. The seats in the universe lounge have a musty smell and the rooms need serious TLC. The fake wood contact paper was peeling. There were poorly repaired holes in the walls. There was a red chair rail that runs the length of the room (I think to disguise cords for the lights, maybe). Under this the wall was moldy and disgusting. This was about 2 feet from my face as I slept so I felt gross. The bathrooms need a deep clean/refurb. When it dry docks in January I TRULY hope they completely gut the rooms because they need it! 2) our room stunk. Our room always smelled like fuel or sewage. According to a mechanic, this was due to the opening of the lines and could not be avoided. If you’re around the middle of the ship, you may experience this. Pretty bad- we knew we were getting close to our room from about 50 feet out. 3) sometimes there isn’t a lot going on. I wish there were more shows or offerings. We didn’t want to play bingo or go to arthritis seminars so sometimes there were limited offerings. Overall, we had a good time, I just wish the ship was in better shape. We may wait and see what the repairs look like or use another carrier out of mobile. This boat is not for us as it currently stands. Carnival- PLEASE make this ship clean and updated! Its sooo rusty and old when compared to others docked in Cozumel! Read Less

We chose this cruise because it departed for Mobile(only an hour from home) and we were interested in relaxing on the cruise and not planning on getting off the ship for excursions. The ship is one of the smallest in Carnival's fleet, which was a plus since my wife cant walk long distances. We enjoyed the friendliness of the crew and the lack of the crowds that can be overwhelming on the larger ships. The entertainment was excellent considering the small theater and limited number of other venue's The main complaint I had was the food. I found that the dining room selections were more limited that on previous cruises on the Carnival Dream and Conquest. Even on Elegant night, the Entree's did not include Lobster tail and Filet Minion as was included on previous cruises, although Lobster tails were offered for an additional fee. I also found the preparation was not very good with most of my dinners overcooked and dried out and the steak was mealy and grizzly. While the Wait staff was for the most part friendly and helpful, I found the pace of dinner extremely slow, which probably the reason most entree's arrived cold. During breakfast in the dining room, I usually received my toast 5-10 minutes before I received my eggs, which were overcooked 2 out of 5 mornings. Another issue was people "Vaping" in the passageways and on the pool and Serenity decks. Even when crew members observed the "Vaping" they said nothing. Overall I enjoyed the cruise and am considering taking another on the fantasy in the not to distant future. I do hope that Carnival will work on improving the food service Read Less

My husband and I booked the 4-Day Cruise out of Mobile to Cozumel as an anniversary getaway and loved every minute of it. We showed up a few minutes before our scheduled boarding time and couldn't have had an easier experience going through security and on to the ship. We had an oceanview room with a king sized bed - the room (bathroom included) was a perfect size for just the two of us. I had expected much smaller accommodations and smaller bathroom but was pleasantly surprised. There is PLENTY of closet storage space in the room too. While the ship may be older they absolutely make the most of what they have. There are constantly people cleaning and making sure it looks it best. They also drain and scrub down the pool each night. We stayed on the boat instead of doing an excursion in Cozumel and LOVED having the pool all to ourselves. The food was pretty good - not the best we've had but definitely not terrible. Pretty much everything on the breakfast buffet was great - and Guy's Burgers are fantastic. The Dining Room food was always presented beautifully but tended to be a little hit-or-miss. The soups were always surprisingly good. SERVICE was 100% top-notch in every way. Always helpful and kind whether it was your room steward or wait staff in a restaurant. We would absolutely book this cruise again and already look forward to the next time we go. If you are simply looking to relax and enjoy, this is a great vacation. Read Less

Our cruise to Mexico had been a phenomenal trip with so many new experiences. Planning out a trip is always fun, deciding where we were going to go was difficult since there are so many options. I had decided to surprise my boyfriend to a cruise for his birthday. I made the choice to go on a cruise since, neither of us have ever gone and had thought it would be a great experience for both of us. I booked our cruise through Cruise Only and they had such an easy system that made it so simple to book. Cruise only provides discounted prices when it comes to cruise that way everyone can go and have some fun. When it came to our cruise I was also able to make payments. I purchased the suite with a balcony that way we can enjoy the view whenever we like. So, I had a year to make payments which made the trip more affordable not to have to come up with a huge lump sum all at once. Getting the suite, we were considered VIP which meant it provided us to have the option to load and unload when we went off the boat. We will be on the cruise for four nights and five days. I gotten a great deal on a flight for both of us there and back seventy-five dollars per ticket. Which was cheaper than if we had driven plus the time we would have had to take. Which Cruise Only provided us discount on flights that made it a lot easier to find great prices. In July of 2018 was when we had an opportunity to get on the boat they made us feel like royalty, our bags were taken to our room. Our port was in Long Beach and headed to Catalina and Baja Mexico. We will be on the boat for a week and was excited for our adventure. I believe everyone should have an opportunity to go on a cruise and see if they like it. Make sure to bring nausea medicine everyone one deals with the motion of the boat different, we were fine but there were others who were not. So, I recommend going on a short cruise first, just in case you do have nausea you’re not spending a week being sick. One cool thing is we had everything exclusive meaning we were able to eat whenever we got hungry and order pretty much whatever we like. Breakfast and dinner had a place where we can go sit down and eat, to have a server. One night we did order steak and lobster which was not included in the price, but was affordable and tasted great. On the Carnival boat there, customer service was great and was there for every need that we had while we were on the boat. From the custodians, servers everyone was amazing. The staff were from all over the world. We did find out that the laws are different at sea and the cruise ship could work the employee as much and pay them as they desire. That is why they hire so many people who are not American because a lot of foreign countries just want the chance and willing to work less hours for less pay. Which showed us how blessed I am really to live in the US. We meet a custodian who was in contract for 6 months with Carnival meaning she will be on the boat for that time and work long hours. She loved her job and was happy with what she did. So, for the most part everything we could expect the staff provided us with what was needed. There were so many activities that were included in the trip which were shows such as comedians, musicals, magic shows and much more. My favorite was the comedians, it was my first show ever and the eighteen and plus had me dying in laughter. We spent most of our time in the jacuzzi which was nice with the view of the ocean or land. We also participated in activities of the boat such as jet skis, a tour in Catalina and Mexico. We had an opportunity to see the culture and Mexico by going to the Blow Hole, while walking to the Blow Hole so many people were out selling crafts and really hustling. In Mexico we had an opportunity to do a tequila tasting, which I have never been a fan and actually enjoyed it. They had tequila that was watermelon flavored. Our View of our room was amazing while we were at land. We booked the suite with the balcony so we could view our location whenever we liked. At sea, the sunset was beautiful and had an opportunity to really admire the sunset with the water. At night it was black and we could not see anything but the sound of the water which was very relaxing. Our room was smaller than I would have thought with booking a suite, but what else would we expect on a cruise boat. My only negative review was there was a lot of children on the boat and not many places that adults could go to relax. They had one area that was twenty-one and up which was very small, they had two jacuzzi and a few chairs to get sun at or relax, I did spend a lot of my time in the jacuzzi to relax but there would be filled with people. I do not have any children so I would probably go on another cruise boat that is serviced more to adults than people with kids. Carnival would be a great cruise once I have a family since they had so much to do for children. Overall, I loved our cruise and we had created so many memories and it was our best vacation, we have ever had after our cruise our vacation did not end there. We decided to stay in Long Beach a few nights after too enjoy are vacation some more I cannot wait for our next cruise. Read Less

It all started at check in when the carnival app went down. It showed we didn't have a reservation, which we did but the staff was super rude. We finally get on the boat and everything is great until we get to our room. I don't think a deep clean has been done in our room for months. I can't even tell you how much dust and mold was in our room. It sparked up my ashtma and allergies, and I'm still sick from this. Even the crew said it was paid and there was nothing they could do, besides get a fan.(which helped some) The ship was very old and probably needs to retire. Considering I have been cruising with carnival for years, I did have a high expectation that it would be a great cruise like my previous ones. And to top it all off the last day our toilet broke at 8am and did not get fixed until after 3pm. Even though we asked our stateroom Stewart three times, and called guest services three times it eventually got fixed. I even found an engineer in the hall who said "that's not my job".The engineer then leaves our door wide open to the public for quite some time so we get in touch with security who is the biggest joke of them all. We had a meeting and they still refused to say it was there mistake even though we seen the key report. It was just our room that had these problems but it surely wasn't taken care of. Denzel, Rhea and Anita in the dining area definitely took care of us though. Duraio at the front desk was phenomenal. Read Less

This was our first time on Carnival. We chose this cruise because it was the closest port to home and we didn't have to spend money on airfare. It also fell right on our anniversary and was a super great deal for a 5 night cruise. Not any balconies on the Fantasy except for the suites so we had an ocean view stateroom. We bought faster to the fun and check in was a breeze. We thought faster to the fun was well worth the money and will try to get it again if we ever cruise with Carnival again. Room: We were able to go right to our room as soon as we boarded and drop off any carry on luggage we had. The room was ready and looked good. It was clean and well kept. No stains on the carpet or anything. It was in a great location on the ship as far as being able to access everything. The only thing I didn't like about the room was it was right below the galley for the 2 restaurants above. I usually won't get a cabin under a galley, restaurant, pool deck, or nightclub. I decided to try this one out since I couldn't find a single review were people reported noise. I am an early riser anyway (4:00 am) so it wasn't a big deal but around 4:30 am every morning, there was lots of noise from above. Stainless steel dishes dropping, tables crashing together, and what sounded like a floor jack rolling crates of food around. I knew better, so it was my fault that I booked it... Dining: Guy's Burger Joint, and the Blue Iguana Cantina, were excellent. We ate at one or both of these every day. The buffet on the other hand was super small and you could not reach 50% of the items because they were located behind the food in front and you had to ask a server to get it for you. The food was average at best, so not overeating at the buffet was not a problem. I had a reuben sandwich from the deli. The meat was like rubber and very fatty. The main dining rooms were good. I liked all of the meals I had. The macaroni and cheese was awesome. Entertainment: We only saw one comedian and he was funny... We spent most of our free time on the ship on the 21 and over serenity deck. Since we didn't have our own balcony, this is where we would go to be outside. Service: The service on the ship seemed good for the most part. Our room steward asked us if we wanted morning or evening service or both... I kind of felt uncomfortable with this because it felt like he wanted to do the minimum to get by. Normally if I only wanted one or the other, I would put the " do not disturb " sign on the door... Because sometimes I like morning service, always evening, and sometimes I like both. He did fill up my cooler with ice every night. I thought the service in the main dining room was better than I expected. It was great! I left the main server extra cash at the end of the meal. Ports: We liked Progreso. We always go out of the main port area to do our shopping. The vendors in the city were very aggressive. We just tried to remember they were just people trying to make a living. We had fun talking with the locals and eating the food we would come across along the way. Cozumel: This was our 4th time to Cozumel. I think they have some of the most beautiful water in the world. We had a scuba trip booked through Carnival and It was canceled.. I went to the desk to ask why, and they said the Carnival Breeze bumped our 9:00 am time slot and we would have to go later in the day. Thanks Carnival, but no thanks... Overall we had a good time, but I don't think I will ever book another cruise without our usual aft facing balcony. The junior suite on the Fantasy is just an ordinary balcony stateroom on any other ship, except for double the price. I couldn't see paying the price for only a 5 night cruise. Read Less

We chose this 5 night cruise from Mobile to celebrate our birthdays. We have done the same itinerary twice before sailing form New Orleans and enjoy visiting Mayan sites from Progreso and love everything about Cozumel. We drove in the night before and were able to experience one of Mobile's many Mardi Gras parades, which was quite a treat. Embarkation was about as painless as possible, we parked at the port, as alternatives were hard to find. We parked about 11:00 and were on board by about 12:30. We stayed in a porthole room, it had plenty of room and storage for the two of us. While we had lunch on embarkation day from the buffet and deli. we had most of our meals in the Celebration Dining Room. Food was generally good, as was the service. We particularly enjoyed the new breakfast menu served on port days. We also enjoyed breakfast burritos from BlueIguana several mornings and burgers from Guys for late lunch after touring from Progreso. We went to a comedy show one night, the lounge used for comedy is smaller than on previous Fantasy class ships, so that was very crowded. We went to all three production shows, they were decent overall, but we felt the country show was week. Live music around the ship was pretty good, there was one very good duo and a single performer and second duo that were pretty good too. The fun squad seemed to do a nice job keeping the energy level high and there seemed to be a fair amount of activities. In Progreso, we took a shore excursion to Dzibilchaltun, It was an interesting site, and our guides spoke English well. In Cozumel we took a taxi to the ruins of San Gervasio and toured on our own, which we enjoyed. We had the driver drop us off at La Choza where we enjoyed a delicious lunch. We walked back downtown and took a cab the rest of the way back to the ship Debarkation seemed to take a long time, but went smoothly. Overall we had a very good time. Read Less

Number 14 and 10 years since we were on her for our honeymoon. Over the past several years I have noticed a steady decline in service from Carnival in general due to less staff and more work. Being a smaller ship means you get more of that attention we used to get. The service was a 5 STAR!! Mikey the CD was the best I have been around when it comes to customer service. He actually interacted with guests everywhere and gave off lots of empathy! He was high energy and fun. (and I never really paid attention to CDs) Super easy port to embark and debark! Food was over all very good with its usual fair to just good. Only a 4 star review due to the age she is showing. Very very worn, but CLEAN. Probably in its twilight years with Carnival. Did not do shows or comedy but heard good things. There was always something going on. Casino staff was a 10! Karaoke has had a MUCH needed upgrade and is now Touchtunes Karaoke. Did the Carnival Pub crawl and beach excursion in Progresso and we had a blast (fyi-not really beach time), and Mr Sanchos in Cozumel for our 7th time and it won again! Was the roughest cruise we have ever been on but not their fault as it was weather related and the old ships do not have the stabilizers. One IMPORTANT note for the drinkers out there: Until about 8-9pm there is a VERY limited menu SHIP WIDE to order drinks off of due to State regulations so you really get shorted on the Cheers package! We had taken the carnival dream out of new orleans on this same itinerary...we thought. this cruise on this old boat out of mobile, al is a "whole 'nuther thang." don't plan on having your beverage package delivered or get anything but a soft drink or watered down "boat drink" until you are in international waters...this is alabama, after all. "junior suite" was about same size as simple balcony stateroom on larger boats like dream. v-cabins are on deck 11, which has only two elevators working (kinda)...the glass ones to the atrium that don't go to the gangplank or to medical! so, while there are two other full elevator banks forward which traverse all decks, carnival locks them out for the entire cruise including debarkation!!! think about that if you are in a wheelchair or have a sprained ankle or are trying to get you and your luggage to the debarkation deck when all 4 elevators on the floor are locked out! ...and the elevators in the atrium were a running joke from all aboard! they would just stop (not overloaded,) or doors would close, then open up for no reason whatsover, and do it over and over again, often catching people in the 'elevator jaws of death!" ---that line never failed to get a tired laugh from those poor souls just trying to get somewhere on the boat. Now...here is the real rub: we were supposed to have two shore days. but, when we received our 'updated' itinerary, we ended up arriving at the first stop at costa maya at one o'clock in the afternoon, leaving at 8 that night! we said, "ok, at least we have a whole day in cozumel..." but nooooooooooo. turns out we could get to cozumel by 8 am, but, we had to be back on boat no later than 3:30!!! this itinerary used to go out of new orleans using dream-class ships, and it was a very good trip (we took one last year,) with a good boat, and lots of time on shore days. fantasy is not that way! in fact, it seemed like they need to retire that old girl...it is just worn and unable to provide the product that people think they are buying. ...and if carnival can't live up to their "2 shore day" promise coming out of moblie, well...then they shouldn't advertise it. i may never cruise with carnival again...darn sure not out of mobile. The fantasy is very old and really is starting to look it. BUT the main selling point of going on the ship is Mickey the Cruise Director. He is amazing. He is where you get the definition of fun. I don't think it is possible to be on the ship and not have interaction with him. He is everywhere and talks to everyone and pushes those that are not having fun to have fun. The food this time was NOT good at all in the dining room, and the service was not any better. We went on the ship 6 months ago and I wrote the food and service were amazing, that was not the case this trip. Guys burgers were good but the Blue Iguana was better. Now the dining room was really good when you went there for sea day brunch. Just not dinner. The center bar is where everything happens, Russell and Nancy the bartenders are amazing, very friendly. Really enjoy them.. Russell actually sings and is really good. Take 2 the duo that sings on the ship is out of this world. She gives Whitney Houston a run for her money. Where ever they are playing on the ship go there, they take requests. The rooms were old but good, They are kept clean, the entire ship is kept clean. weird this trip they did not push hand washing. All in all still a good trip for the money. Read Less

My better half and I booked a quick 4 day jaunt down to Cozumel out of Mobile on December 7-11. We could not have predicted the monster cold front and winter storm that would roll in the same evening and fully encompass the Gulf of Mexico in the grip of 50+ mph winds and steady cold rains. I'll admit this may have impacted my review somewhat. Being cooped inside for four days on an aging ship listening to constant announcements about how to donate more money to the parent company will tend to make one a little grouchy. Parking C+ We arrived just after 11am CST and were able to park quickly and efficiently. If you do not prepay online you must pay at a kiosk. Advisable to take a photo of your license plate beforehand unless you are Rain Man and have memorized it. The kiosk was not very user friendly but we got through the process unscathed. Onboarding/Embarkation B+ Nice folks throughout the process will guide you through the maze that leads to the check-in area. Don't try to sneak in any alcohol, this is not Carnival's first rodeo and they will find it (not speaking from past experience or anything..ahem). Even at this busy time we were onboard the ship within 15 minutes of paying for parking. A vast improvement over the 1-2 hour cattle calls of Carnival's earlier days. Public Areas B- This ship launched when Wilson Phillips was topping the charts, so keep that in mind. The atrium is actually very nice, albeit dressed in dated neon..but it is tasteful and the ship was decorated for Christmas (The Holidays if you are sensitive). The Promenade deck has a bland and seldom used disco, a phenomenally popular karaoke bar (great fun!), a comedy club that appeared thrown together as an afterthought and a casino which should provide it's patrons with free chest x-rays due to the lack of ventilation. Every smoker from Charleston to Corpus Christi was on this cruise and they were ALL gambling. Some wear could be observed around windows and mirrors but the ship looks very good for being 27. Dining areas were clean and well managed. Muster Drill D- Oh come on, have you ever been to one that wasn't an exercise in claustrophobia and and masochism? Drink liberally beforehand. Cabin C We had an Ocean View on Riviera Deck 4. Two twins beds that push together to make a queen. Nothing special. You don't cruise to stay in the room. Contrary to previous reviews, we did have a hair dryer in our room...so there's that. Bring your own toiletries, Carnival doesn't give you the abundant samples they once did. Or maybe Guy Fierri five-fingered them during a complementary tour...who knows. Dining B Speaking of Guy Fierri, oh my goodness the burgers are delicious! I had one every day for lunch and tried each variety. They are all great! Blue Iguana has tasty taco salads, burritos and the like with a broad selection of sauces and flavorings. The buffet food was okay...except for the desserts. Do yourself a favor and wait until dinner for dessert. We chose Your Time dining and enjoyed our meals in the Celebration Dining Room. Wait staff were friendly but hurried. Making them dance to Gangnam Style is ridiculous but I guess some folks enjoy it. We enjoyed chicken, escargot, mahi mahi, prime rib, etc. but gone are the days of chateaubriand and baked Alaska. Now the menu is more like a really nice Applebee's. Entertainment and Activities A- Karaoke was a blast and was always packed. The comedy shows were very, very funny and we sat through three in a row one night. I enjoyed the casino but basically lost my shirt, which I would have had to throw away anyway because I would never have gotten the smoke smell out. Our Cruise Director Mikey was omnipresent and engaged. Due to the weather, all activities and contests that would have been on the Lido Deck were instead held in the Atrium. Considering the situation, things went smoothly and entertainment value was not compromised Service B I have never had a complaint about service on 11 Carnival cruises. Everyone was wonderful again with one exception. There was a lady working at the Specialty Coffee bar who wasn't having a good day for two days in a row. Not rude just not at all friendly, unusual for this cruise line. Ports and Shore Excursions C Cozumel. Been there, done that, did it again, and again, and again. The weather did not cooperate and we have been here enough to be bored with it. We couldn't go to the beach so most of the afternoon was spent on deck trying to get a cloudtan in 35mph gusts. Disembarkation F Good God if there is anything that can make the Muster Drill seem like a week in Bora Bora it is disembarkation from a Carnival cruise. It took about 17 hours (okay, maybe two) and was disorganized and confusing. Yet even as you are finally walking off the ship ready to begin your long journey home there is Cruise Director Mikey, giving you a parade wave and a "Bye-Bye" to send you on your way. I've gotten a little jaded over the years. Carnival just isn't doing it for us anymore. It took four days of being stuck inside with no sunshine to make that abundantly clear. Your mileage may vary... Read Less

Lets start with that I have cruised 25+ times on the smallest ships and the largest ships over several lines. I have been to almost all of the Caribbean ports. I have my favorites, but that is not what this review is about. I vacation several times a year, so I am not "desperate" for fun. This trip was with a group of 8, of which 5 were newbies. Embarkation was simple and flawless. Do not pay for Carnival's "Faster to the Fun" ticket which allows faster embarkation....it buys you 4 minutes. The cabins are standard cabins with the normal complaints...lack of hanging hooks, not many electrical outlets, etc... The A/C did work great...coldest ever! Carnival did cut room steward service to 1 time a day, which you choose with your steward. They of course do an excellent job. This is the oldest ship in carnival's fleet. It has been refurbished several times, and is beautiful. At times it shows its age in insignificant ways. I'll let you find them. NOTHING that could dampen my vacation. The food was very good in both the buffets and the MDR. Guy's Burger Joint has great burgers. 24 hour pizza and ice cream is a big plus. No specialty dining rooms, but a specialty Steakhouse section on the menu in the MDR for $20pp. We did not do it. Entertainment was great. In the past I have not been a fan of the Fun Ship 2.0 entertainment, but it was much better this time. The entertainment staff could not have been better. Mikey the cruise director is the BEST that we have EVER had! Bar service was better than in the past also. We had a medical emergency after leaving Mobile, and had to return to port. This altered our schedule and we missed Progresso...oh well. This did result in an OVERNIGHT trip to Cozumel which I have never done.....been to Cozumel about 15 times...always love it. Carnival gave credit for the missed port. Disembarkation was the fastest ever(self carry as always). I was home by 8:15 am WOW. In summary, I have read the bad reviews about this ship. Some people can not be pleased. If you take what is given and roll with the punches, this ship can create a vacation you will remember a lifetime. Nit pick and any ship will be your dungeon. Everybody is aware that this was the Cruise that Carnival dubbed the Cruise to no where. Apparently from what I heard from other people on this ship a man was stabbed by his wife for bringing his girlfriend along for entertainment. Carnival always has creative names for taking the money and cancelling the fun off the fun ship. The food on this particular cruise ship is definetly far below what I have experienced on other Carnival Ships. They may be using this as the save a buck ship. The desserts are awful too. They look great but when you taste them they lack flavor and the artificial sweetener taste is unreal. Carnival has better food than this on the other ships. I know that for a fact. The Old Holidays food was better than this. Carnival you really need to do better than this when people trust you with Vacations they wait on all year. Somebody from Carnival needs to get on the Corporate jet unannounced and check this mess for themselves. For anybody that wants to point out value for money As an excuse I will head you off and point out that I can Vacation anywhere in the world on any Cruise ship. If that's an excuse for less they just need to call it what it is. I didn't shop a deal and I don't want that being an excuse to do less. I'm going to take one more Cruise on this ship and see if it is a series of unfortunate events. I truly hope so. The bathroom by the burrito bar was overflowing in the floor that was located by the buffet dining room. Carnival you better start treating your guests better. I will remind you -They don't have to hand you money. A positive is the room porter was great. He got tipped well as a result. I don't want a deal! I want to trust you to give me what you promise. That is all. Deliver what you promise!! Look for yourself. Don't take my word. Check!!! I have had wonderful cruises with your ships in other states. I know your capable. Is it just this ship?
