Port of call to Grand Turk. Many activities, bars and restaurants on ship. Cost was good. Drinks were awesome! Good pizza and Guys burgers. Buffet was not great and lines very long. We ate in main dining room most dinners. The smell was bad at times and in certain spots one time it was horrible and I almost threw up on deck 4 passing through. Our room air conditioning worked good and room didn't smell. Loved Half Moon Cay beach as it was nicest beach I have been to beside Bermuda, so blue and soft sand like powder. Very relaxing. Amber Cove pool and Port was very nice. Grand Turk was a nice Island to ride around on golf cart butnwqs surprised at how rocky the beach was in the water hard to walk in water and had to be careful. The ship was a nice size and the cruise Director Simon was the best of any cruise I've been on. Other cruise lines we never even saw cruise director. Simon was in the middle of it all having a gtrat time along with us. Lovely Jubly!!!! Read Less

Room 6338 on the Carnival Magic September 22 - September 28, 2019 Exotic Eastern Caribbean Cruise 6 Day. Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, and Amber Cove Dominican Republic Husband and Wife Cruise First off let me just say, the Carnival cruise lines gets too many negative reviews. Our trip started out with arriving at Ft. Lauderdale at 10:30 we boarded the ship after check in immediately around 11:30. The buffet elevators were programed to take you directly up to the Buffet which is on deck 10. We ate at Guys Burger and went to the bar to order a drink. We tried to get to our room which was 6338 and our luggage was outside of our room and badge keys were in the mail box. I AM NOT KIDDING YOU. We were able to unpack and situated. This trip made us Platinum Cruisers and when we opened the door there were two lanyards on the bed and 2 pins with a letter of thanks. Very classy Carnival! I have read where people say some nasty things about Carnival doing this because it's cheap. Shame on you, it cost a lot of money for things like this and a company to show their appreciation. I am not a princess and I appreciate things like this. Elevators were crowded but you’re on vacation with a lot of other people who want to have fun. This is where you manners should prevail. The elevators time was about 10 minutes to get into one. Because we stayed on the 6th floor we would run down the steps to the casino to the 5th floor. We are also Premier Member's (Casino Spenders) and received little gifts every day. LOVED IT. First thing I did was go out on the balcony. I tried before to find a review about the room and could not find one so I will take the time to explain it as best that I can. The balcony is on the 6th floor looking down at the outside shower and the Jacuzzi was to the right of it. I really didn't think too much about it because I planned on being in the casino most of the time. However, there was only one incident where about 8 teen agers were in the Jacuzzi getting on one another shoulders goofing around and splashing water all over the place. This went on about one hour with swearing between each other and making out. I eventually called 911 and reported it. The security guard was up and walked the floor and told them there was a complaint made by the passengers, they told the guard we were all laughing at them and going along with it. The Security Guard remained firm and told them to stop it. After the guard left they started to yell at us all for ratting them out. The boat was just leaving port from Half Moon Cay and they wanted to know why we were all out on the decks (Where are these parents?) Finally they left, Thank God. I do not blame Carnival because the parents should be more responsible with their kids especially teenagers. They still can still get into trouble regardless of where it is. With this being said, I do think that nobody under 18 years of age should be in the Jacuzzi’s without adult supervision. The buffet was really good which surprised me. We do not attend the sit down dining because it takes too long for us. Out of all of the other ships, Freedom, Valor, Liberty, Glory and Conquest this was a better buffet. Very tasty. The deserts were not that sweet which made you not want to overdo it. That was a good thing because it’s amazing to see how people just gorge themselves on the food. The casino was outstanding. I love the bigger ship because it gives you a lot more machines to play on. Even when the nights were really crowded you can find a machine to play. And yea the smokers are really bad. I had one lady that always seemed to be sitting next to me just smoking and blowing it my face without playing the slots. No problem I would just move to another machine. The machines let you play with wins and on the last day my husband won almost $1,200.00 which was very cool.  There were vapors on the boat but the casino employees would catch them and remind them there is not vaping on the boat. Our room Steward was so wonderful and attentive we always had ice in the room and the room was clean and not smelly like some other people have complained about. I did not smell anything on the ship other than good food and cigarette smoke. Also, the crew were amazing they were always working so very hard on keeping the ship clean. I know that this is a long review but Carnival does not get enough good reviews!!! I cannot wait to book another trip on the Dream, Horizon and eventually the new. Dismemberment was the best I have ever had. This guy should be a trainer in keeping things organized and staying right there to direct people to keep doing the same things that other people were doing. Usually there is no leadership and people crowd the hall way and there is congestion everywhere. NOT THIS TIME. Thank you Carnival Cruise lines you are the best and hope to see you soon!!! Read Less

This was our very first cruise. Didn’t no exactly what to expect and was nervous at first. Everything turned out beyond what I could have asked for. The ship is huge with 2 pools (wished they were a little bigger) but both very nice. The service was great. The dinning room was definitely my families favorite with our 3 favorite servers that we continued to request the entire cruise (Gede Arnawa, Ketut wiranan, and Nant) Arnawa was our favorite!! Very outgoing and went beyond what we could have asked for. Always making us laugh and all around a fun guy!! Danced with him at dinner a few times too haha. He was a highlight on our cruise. Some of our favorite places to eat lunch were guys burgers (so yummy) and pig and anchor (boyfriend loved this and I did too) Our favorite bartender was Keke she was amazing! She knew how the make the best bloody Mary’s and very friendly! The cheers drink package was definitely worth every penny. Drinks are about 10$ so we took full advantage of the drink package!! The entertainment was great! The comedy quest show was hilarious! One of our favorites. Simon was our cruise director and he went above and beyond with entertaining everyone. He had a white night party, and 80s party both which were very enjoyable. The last day he did a balloon drop! Was soo cool! The ports that we visited where half moon cay (water crystal clear, my favorite) Turks and cacios, and amber cove. 3 absolutely beautiful ports. In half moon was a perfect beach day and visiting the pirate ship bar! Turks and Caicos we rented a golf cart and rode around the island. Got to visit margaritavillie jacks shack, and more! Amber cove we did zip lining shore excursion. Loved the excursion. Only downfall they didn’t tell you everything you needed to have to be prepared for excursion (shoes, very long shorts, etc) would I go on a cruise again?! Omg yes in a heartbeat!!! Read Less

I read all the review that I could find about the Carnival Magic, some of them worst than others. That being said, I went on this vacation with an open mind and low bar. Let me tell you that was the best thing I could have done and I was not disappointed. My friends and I arrived in Ft. Lauderdale the day before we embarked and stayed at a Hampton Inn which had free airport shuttle and $10 per person transport to the cruise terminal. The hotel was so/so and I would not stay there again. We ended up taking an Uber, which from the hotel to the cruise terminal was less than $20 for an UberXL. From the time of being dropped off by our Uber to getting on the ship, only took 12 minutes. Way to go Port Everglades! Our cabin was amazing. We booked a cove balcony as I've been in one before and I would certainly do it again. People mentioned in some reviews about a sewage smell and we only experienced it in the hallway between rooms 2298-2280 for less than 24 hours, I believe on the third day. It was strange because once you got to our room which was 3 doors down, the hallway smelled fine. Nothing was ever noticeable in our room. Ilham, our room steward, meet us on the first day and asked when we wanted turn down service. Ilham and his assistant were on top of their game. Every time I would walk by them in the hall they would great me and ask me how my day is going. We brought soda onboard and left the extras for them because they were that wonderful. The food on the ship was amazing and I would highly suggest going to the dining room every night to eat. I went with a couple of friends and each night they ordered two entrees because they couldn't decide what to eat. Our waiter, Marvin, and bus boy, Luis, where down to earth and I could not have asked for better wait staff. Guy's Burger are wonderful and I could have had those for every meal. The buffet was so-so, typical buffet food and at one point I went to the Mongolian place and it took 30 minutes of waiting in line to get my food. Pizzeria was never a disappointment and I suggest #4 which is the Formaggio. Simon London, our cruise director, was EVERYWHERE. He is hilarious and all the shows he hosted had a huge crowd. I highly, highly recommend the Love and Marriage show. We sat toward the front and we were crying because we were laughing so hard. Simon was certainly kept on his toes with some of those answers. I also recommend going to the decade trivia in the atrium. It's not really trivia as much as it's a huge sing-a-long and the CD bringing out guests from the audience to participate. In some of the reviews, I was reading the was no Quest scavenger hunt, but on our ship there was. Unfortunately, we were not able to attend because it was extremely late at night (I believe 2330) and we had to be up early the next day to be one of the first off the ship for our excursion. Our piano bar player, Scott, was another fantastic entertainer. The first night we stumbled upon the piano bar by accident and every night thereafter, we spent there because it was that much fun. The Fun Squad on our ship worked really well together and with our Cruise Director. For some of the events they were scripted, but you could tell they were going off script because they would be laughing on stage. Our favorite port was Half Moon Cay. People say there is not good snorkeling there, but that a bunch of crap. They obviously did not try hard enough. If you walk all the way to the end of the beach (its a pretty far walk), there is fantastic coral with huge fish. I would only recommend this if you're a strong swimmer though, the current can be a little strong. The downside of this port is it's a tender port. I had to wait in line for about 35-45 minutes to get a number for the tender. Perks of waiting though, is you are one of the first people off the ship and it feels like you have the beach to yourself, especially if you keep walking away from the crowds. Hopefully Carnival will start building a pier for Half Moon Cay. I did not like Grand Turk at all. So much so, I would not go on another cruise to that port. We had an excursion there, but it was cancelled because not enough people signed up for it. We ended up making our way down to Jack's Shack. That place was nice, but the drinks were overpriced. If you go here, may sure you bring your water shoes with you because the beaches are rocky and full of sea weed. Amber Cove was beautiful. My friends kept singing the theme song to Jurassic Park. We booked a tour through Iguana Mama for the Damajagua Falls. I would HIGHLY recommend the company for an excursion. We were only able to do 7 of the 27 falls because of drought in the area, but they gave us a reimbursement and told us up front about the situation. We did not spend much time in port itself, but there are many shops. If you've made it this far, thank you. Overall, I would recommend this ship and would sail her again. If you go in not expecting a whole lot, you will have a wonderful time. There are many activities on board and you need to try each of them out. If you don't like it, simply leave, there are other activities. The Carnival Magic will not let you down. Read Less

I hate to badmouth, but I have no choice but speak my mind and speaking only about this Carnival ship, not the rest. You charge us that kind of money, we expect first class all the way! One engine was bad when we left and stabilizer didn’t work and rocking so hard, people vomiting and running to buy Dramamine! We were suppose to go to Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos and we didn’t have enough power because they knew that when we left Port Canaveral and were diverted to Nassau instead. Why didn’t we wait and get the parts and fix it and be delayed a few hours, everyone on board was asking? Took two days to get back to Port Canaveral on one engine from Nassau. Food mostly cold and elevators took sometimes 10-15 minutes! Only bright spots was Cruise Director Chris and Guy Burger was hot and good! We spent a total of $3000 for the cruise and SW plane tickets and got one day in Nassau and water was rough on all beaches and lifeguard blew the whistle and told us to get out of the water. We paid for 5 days and drove around on one engine for 4 and never saw Dominican or Turks, plus my husband and I work for a contract company and you don’t work, you don’t get paid! Carnival offered us half our cruise fare toward another cruise. Hubby said pass! We went to Nassau last cruise and husband didn’t like it and said no more, so where did we go! My hubby said no more Carnival because the ships are too old and unkept. People smoking outside our balcony room and the whole ship smells like smoke and people smoking everywhere. He has asthma and had to use his inhaler quite because he had problems breathing with all that smoke! I told several security persons about it and just walked away? I been on different cruise lines and food was hot and ship looked kept up. Rust spots everywhere outside around pool and deck areas. Need to sell this ship and order another one. I’m going back to Royal Caribbean! Also, it was our 40th wedding anniversary cruise on the HELLation! Carnival got the gold mine and we got the shaft! Read Less

Our first full day at sea the ship broke down and the captain decided that taking us to the Bahamas for a day would make up for a 5 day cruise to Amber Cover and Grand Turk. The food was horrible and half the elevators didn’t work most of the cruise. Carnival felt they were doing us a favor by refunding $100 to each person with 50% off our next cruise. It wasn’t my fault the ship was old didn’t have the ability to make it to the destination. I asked for a refund and was told that I signed a disclaimer and wasn’t entitled to a full refund. Carnival also felt that one day in the Bahamas was just as good as a two day to the Caribbean. We floated out at sea for three full days with nothing to do. It was the worst experience with a company that states they provided quality care and travel. Carnival only cares about making their money and not about the cruisers that help pay their salaries. If your reading this don’t use carnival for your vacation, spend a little more money and cruise on a reliable liner that will actually get you to your destination. The crazy thing happened, the ship started working miraculous when we were getting off the ship. They were preparing to take the same broken ship back out to sea that couldn’t even get us to our destination Read Less

First I would like to state i rated a 1 because there were no minus buttins to select. We chose this cruise to celebrate our wedding honeymoon because of the destination from Port Canaveral to Turks &Caicos, and to Amber Cove D.R. Unfortunately this didnt happen and we ended up in Nassau Bahamas. The itinerary was switched after we were disembarked on the second day. The ship had mechanical issues our balcony door to our suite was broke and therefore impacted the air conditioning and refrigerator in our room. Secondly, prior to boarding our ship we had to carry our luggage to the top floor of the ship ourselves as we were informed Carnival dismisses their porters at 2pm daily. We did not get what we paid for nor did we enjoy this cruise. The staff seemed to not care and are powerless to try and accomodate for our losses. Carnival ruined my honeymoon. If your lokking for luxury this is not the ship nor the cruiseline you want to select. My husband and I are so sorry we didnt cruise with Norwegian as we normally do. Read Less

My family and I just returned from the 5 day Exotic Eastern Caribbean on the the Carnival Elation. Let me 1st start off by we never made it to any of our designated ports. My family and I have cruised a lot over the years and this by far was the worst cruise we have ever been on. This ship is older even after been refurbished in 2018. There is not a lot of activities on board, the staff is very unfriendly especially at the bars and Pixels. The pool is very small and the serenity deck has no pools only 2 hot tubs that the water was always freezing. We stayed on Deck 14 and the entire time we were on the ship there was only 1 working elevator on the ship that went to Deck 14. And half the time you had couldn't get on the elevator because there was a group of teenagers who were constantly joy riding on the elevator. The food on Lido was not great, and every time we ate at the dining room we were rushed by the staff. And if you purchase the alcohol package the drinks are very watered down. From the time the ship departed on Sat the entire ship was rocking. So badly that passengers were experiencing motion sickness. We departed on Sat 9/21 and was informed on Sunday that due to the ship experiencing mechanical problems we will not be docking at any of the designated ports. We were re routed to Nassau on Monday to see if the ship could be repaired, and left on Tuesday morning with the ship still not being able to be repaired.. There were no excursions offered by Carnival in Nassau because of the previous hurricane in the Bahamas. We were informed that we will be compensated with $100 on board credit per person and 50% off a future sailing. On board credit which you had to use on there ship, so in reality we got no compensation. I fully understand that sometimes issues comes up beyond our control, but I also believe in being treated fairly. The compensation we received for this cruise was terrible considering the hassle we went through. At no point and time was it any of the guest fault that the ship had mechanical issues. Carnival needs to step up and give all there guests that was on this sailing all a better compensation. My family and I probably would not consider Carnival for our next cruise unless we get some other form of compensation for this sailing. This ship needs to be retired it's old and outdated with just too many issues! Read Less

What a complete joke of a cruise. The ship is completely outdated, the food is subpar and not being able to actually go to your destination makes it a very frustrating experience. There was a billow of black smoke pouring out of one side of the stacks as we were about to depart. I knew something was wrong right away. Then the proceeded to take us into 10-15ft swell while telling us that we're not going to make our destinations due to engine problems. Incremental weather I understand but engine problems? I'd that's the case refund us instead of offering some measly ship credit. They should have decommissioned this ship because everything about is old. The pool holds 50 people max with a 2000+ people on board. The 3 jacuzzis are smaller than my bath tub at home and the decor is something out of an 80's movie. Somehow the stars on Cruise Critic show 4 but you can see its actually less than 3.5 stars..... Read Less

First, as so many other reviews let’s start with the fact that they knew this ship was having issues before we left the port and they decided to take off anyway. With one engine working we didn’t go to our designated ports of DR and Grand Turk but instead ended up in Nassau. The refrigerators were not working. The elevators were malfunctioning. The ship was rocking terribly. And for some one who is a frequently cruiser even I had to take some Dramamine. Then to add insult to injury late night past the time that housekeeping should be coming in room an attendant decided to come in my room and stand in the doorway until I awaken out of my sleep and ask him why he’s here. There was roaches in my cabin when I notified guest services of the security issue with “Mr late night peeper” and the cockroach I was insulted by offered a bottle of wine or a steak dinner. I have never felt so violated in my life. Thanks carnival I will never ever get on your ship again even if you paid me to Read Less

Have travelled with carnival in the past and it has been generally good and the dates of this trip worked for me. Let me say quickly that the ship was not up to the usual standard. Food not as varied as previous cruises and the ship looked wore and tired. However the main reason for writing was the fight that broke out in the Tiffany dining room on the 4th night. After a small period of rasied voices one person raised a chair above his head and smashed it into another person's head. This wasn't the end of it. The same person was going to hit the person again had he not been stopped by other guests. Security was called. And it took them some time to arrive at the scene by which time the culprit had left the scene. I did speak to security as i was a witnes to the crime and they showed no interest in me giving a statement and description of the assailant. Therefore for me as a guest, sercurity, passenger safety, and the risk this posses to vunerable peoples safty (a child was in the area and several disabled perople were in the area) leaves me with great concern about carnival attitude to the crimes committed on board. The passenger was taken to the hospital part of the ship and there didnt appear to be any police presence whe we arrived back at dock at the end of the cruise. With that being said i will never book with carnival again and advise others not to do it. I await carnivals response to this. If there is one. Also on a final note about security, let me not dwell to much on the issue with marijuana being smoked on board. Especially previlant on deck 11 the family area. After explicitly being told not to, what was sechrity doing about this. Again await carnivals response to this. Read Less

Due to a continuing health issue, we chose this cruise’s Eastern Caribbean schedule. I will preference this by telling you I’m a Platinum level. So how can they screw up the embarkation and disembarkation. Embarkation went smoothly. Disembarkation, so so, this time we decided to carry our luggage off the ship. We received our waiting area location, right next to the “fast to the fun” quests. When the time came to disembark, the cruise director came in said Platinum quests can go, all the Fast to the fun people headed for the door. The cruise director stated we are all platinum today. Don’t know how you feel but I earned me status. Once on the ship my wife and I took a tour to become familiar with the ship. Standard layout for Carnival’s older ships. We hung out until time for the muster drill. This is where it starts to go downhill. We get to our muster station, it’s 90-95 outside. We stand there for over 30 minutes waiting on the safety instructions. Finally they give the instructions, lasted less than a minute, and had to wait another 30 minutes to be released. Our luggage did not come until right before dinner, we selected the early dinning. So much for being priority. Headed down to dinner, table mates were great, we hit if off from the beginning. I was surprised at the lack of menu selections. Portions were small and the taste was less than savory. Service was great, waiter took very good care of us. Standard entertainment you would expect from Carnival. We went to the comedy club, comedians were great. Standard lido deck entertainment, nothing new there. Our ports were nothing special, San Juan, Grand Turk, St Thomas and Amber Cove. Took an excursion to St Johns, beach was OK, water was rough, due to the storms out in the Caribbean. On our way back to St THOMAS they break out the rum punch, as you can imagine some, many indulged way to much. To the point that I had drinks spilled on my hat, Hands stepped on and people falling all over me. Not a good trip back. Once back we headed to the ship. We noticed a longer normal line to board. Again we stood in the backing sun for over 30 minutes to board. The metal detector broke down and they had to wand everyone. You would have thought to open up the other gangway. The onboard ship experience was less than stellar, smokers know no boundaries, the smoking areas were well defined, however some felt they could walk the ship with lit cigarettes. Smoking on the balcony was common, yet I did not see a single Carnival crew member say a word. I understand what to expect on a Carnival cruise, drinking, parting, and general a wild crowd. However, I have never been on a cruise with so many cabin, balcony doors slamming shut at all hours of the night. People running up and down the hallway every night at 2am. My wife and I have decided we will not sail on a Carnival cruise again. We are going on a Celebrity cruise end of October. Read Less

We went on this cruise with casino offer and port is close to home. So price was very good travel to and from was easy. Was a bit concerned about the bus between to get on ship but it went very smoothly not much wait on embarking or disembark. We had an ocean view on first floor room was larger than many balcony we have had in the past. Or room steward was one of the worst we have had we saw him the first day asked to have ice 2x per day he said they don’t do rooms 2x per day we said understand can clean room in morning is fine but just want ice due to no refrigerator finally saw him again on the 3 rd to ask again for ice did receive ice after that but didn’t always get fun times never received invite to meet and mingle and most likely didn’t receive other thing from casino. Room was clean but that was about all. Food was okay ate in main dining room with my time dining. You have to go to 5th floor to get your table assignment then down to 3 rd flor for seating or you can use app to get table assigned. We used the app first 3 nights, first two had some of the worst service ever over 2 hours to get thru meal cold food very disappointing, debating if just going to buffet would be better but don’t really like buffet on the 3rd night was seated with Gultekin as waiter. The reminder of cruise we went to 5th floor so we could request his area, he was friendly effectively took orders and served food timely was on top of his team. If you are going in next few months ask for him for sure you will not regret it.. He said he is going to the be changing ships in few months he is hopefully going to be on Magic. Casino one of my “spots” I play “penny slots” was large enough it was smoky but they have very limited areas where people can smoke so this is going to be the result. Waiter in casino Sabastin was great others were more of the regular place order and wait till you run out of money put more in machine so free drink becomes expensive lol. I enjoy slot tournament but on this ship they do not have electronic board to track seems to decrease the fun only did once because of this. Could not tell you who the host was no desk for host who I usually try to meet, as I said was on board with as casino offer not a “big” spender but usually at least once the host will come and say hello not on this ship. Had been to all 3ports before but had never had to go through customs in San Juan before not a big deal but a hassle nobody really able to answer about change but said it was because we were back in USA after other ports. For the price I paid for 8 days was a good value had never stayed so low on ship before it was not my favorite but would do again for the price. The serenity area is larger than many but due to rough seas top floor was closed for 2 days. It is not as quiet as most because it faces over main pool so you hear all the music and or movies this could be a plus to some but was one time I really missed my balcony for quiet reading time. Chair hogs abound as always but this was the first time I had a confrontation with one as I said top floor was closed and every chair or couch had towels on them a young couple sitting and reading saw us looking for a seat and said they moved stuff to take a seat and that the seats next to them with towels holding seat had nobody for an hour we decided to also move towels onto table and have a seat over the next hour nobody came back. The young couple left and someone else sat down thatt is when the fight began people from those chairs came back and started saying that they had only been gone for 20 minutes and the person had no right to take chairs we spoke up it was all very confrontational and unpleasant but the woman did not give back chair as she should not have to do they were gone at least the hour we were there and according to previous people another hour. The folks who had been in our seats came back and just took their towels they knew they had been gone to long to expect seats still be empty. Honestly unless you are going to the bathroom or a dip in the pool don’t save chairs! If people would stop doing this there would always be plenty of seats maybe you don’t get your first choice of location but so unfair to come out early in the morning save a group of chairs with no intention of returning for hours. Awww vent over! Read Less

Chose this cruise due to length (8 nights) and ports visited (St Thomas, St Maarten and San Juan) plus it left out of Charleston SC which was convenient for our family cruise. I would recommend the Sunshine. Staff was nice and entertainment staff was great. Loved the Ocean Plaza area. Trivia, great music (2 to 12). Enjoyed the Java Café each day. The Atrium parties were fun and the cruise director, Adam, added to the entire experience. Love the Thirsty Frog and Carnivals Red Beer. Our cabin was fine (interior on 6). Towels animals every day made me smile. Ports were awesome. Excursions were fun. Met great people. Also, enjoyed Alchemy Bar and the assortment of drinks. Bartenders did a great job. LOVED the Build a Bear and made a Carnival Bear (and I'm an adult) lol Shows were good. Comedians were funny. Negatives were: the food was below par. Buffet food was cold most of the time. (Salad bar was good). Not enough healthy choices. Lack of vegetables on buffet. Limited choices. Need more fish & chicken that was edible. Deli was good and stayed busy. Pizza was not very good. NCL has much better food. Although Bar Service was overall GOOD. The bartenders don't work a bar very well. They don't honor 1st come 1st serve AND they take orders around the entire bar; make many drinks at once leaving people long waits and newcomers to bar even longer waits. Bad system overall. Other negative for this cruise was piano bar which we usually love. Zack Daniels not a very good singer but can play piano and entertain. But found him overbearing in some aspects. Also, Aretha, bingo, was rude and crude. Rest of staff was great. One other negative was the water pressure. It's an older ship but fine except for the water pressure in shower/bathroom sink. Also, Carnival seems to have problems with sewage smells around their ships that other cruise lines don't have. Public toilets over flowing (ie: Casino bathroom). Don't see this on NCL, RCI or Celebrity. We've been on 4 cruise out of Charleston (Ecstasy, Fantasy and Sunshine). We've enjoyed all 4 and are pleasantly surprised by our experiences. Love this port. This was our first Platinum cruise and we enjoyed the party and guest service priority. Thanks Read Less

Chose this cruise because it was departing from Charleston, SC and going to San Juan. The food selections and quality was amazing. The entertainment especially Zack Daniels in the piano bar was great fun every night but Thursday. Thursday is his drinking night and he was not performing. The shows in the Liquid Lounge where really good. The Acoustic Jams with the young couple Unity entertained us almost every night. They sang a variety of songs and he whistles well while she plays the drum. Ketut and Joyce took good care of our rooms and the Omelet Station on the Lido deck in the Havana Bar was my favorite breakfast most mornings. I would recommend this ship to the 50 and older travelers. They made up 90% of the cruisers onboard. If you require a wheelchair to get on and off the ship this port and this ship does it better than any of the more than 14 ships of 6 different cruise lines I have traveled on. I can't wait for our next cruise on this ship in January 2020. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we had a blast. Right from the port of entry the carnival people where polite and very respectful. Once onboard the ship was very amazing. The night dining meals was fantastic. Our waiter bent over backwards to meet our needs. Aba was one of them and the other was Edward. Once we got settled in our room was very clean and the air conditioner worked great. The balcony was nice at night time. Our room Stewart was niaom "not sure of spelling" Niaom was very polite and helpful. Anything ask he would go out of his way to get it done. Over all trip was fantastic and we seen land that my family thought they would never see. Half moon cay was a beautiful island to spend the day. Our next cruise will be to Bermudas and will be with the pride of possible. Can't forget the ship cruise director Dr E he put together and awesome week of entertainment. Read Less

We were celebrating our 50th Anniversary with family and friends. We had 8 cabins booked and we all were satisfied with our cabins. The Magic is done up in good taste and easy to find where you want to go. Buffet was very good, no problems other than an occasional long line but nothing to complain about. Would be nice to have a larger variety of desserts other than the cakes. Also for breakfast, it would be nice to have donuts along with the little pastries, but all is good none the less. Dining in the dining room was very nice but being a large group, we were pretty much the last table to leave. Service was excellent as always but a smidgeon slow. We also miss HOT, HOT, HOT dance. We said the same thing the last 2 cruises. Bring them back please. We have been on several Carnival ships and always enjoyed them. Never any complaints! Entertainment is why I didn't give a 5* rating. That has gone down hill within the last couple of years. None of us were pleased. The comedian was good but it was repeated the last day. We rushed to get to the area so we could get seats to find that it was a repeat of Monday night. Therefore, no entertainment the last night was available. We want to go on another Carnival cruise but fear the same thing will happen. We always enjoyed the Vegas style shows so I guess we'll have to visit Vegas to see that again. Excursions are getting pricier every year but that is to be expected with everything these days. We were unable to visit Half Moon Cay which was a disappointment but understandable due to the hurricane. That was the main reason we booked this cruise because that was the only island we have not visited yet. They took us to Nassau instead which we've been to 6 times. LOL Read Less

My wife and I just returned from the 5-day Elation cruise from Port Canaveral to Grand Turk and the Dominican Republic. We had a blast and would highly recommend this cruise. However. . . if you are expecting a luxury cruise, you will be disappointed. This is an older vessel, and much smaller than other ships we've been aboard. The buffet selection is limited and the pool is small. But it's like $450 to ride on the ocean, visit sunny Caribbean islands, and partake in all kinds of fun activities. Reading some of the reviews reminds me of the Louis CK bit where customers are complaining about wi-fi problems on an airplane. ("Oh really, what happened next, did you fly through the air incredibly, like a bird? Did you partake in the miracle of human flight"). Grand Turk The port at GT is just like all Carnival ports - a bunch of tourist trap shops and overpriced food. My wife and I did the snorkel excursion which was a good time. If you don't want to hang around on the ship, the beach in GT, (right next to the port) is amazing. Clearest water you can imagine. We also took a cab ($10) to Cockburn Town to check out the local scene. I do NOT recommend this and I would never do it again. Not a lot to see and frankly a bit scary. Dominican Republic We ported in Puerto Plata. The port there is the same old same old. The beaches are a bit further away. My wife and did the monkey excursion and it was phenomenal. A lot of folks rented ATV's or did the cable car or zip lines. Elation Cruise All in all the service was good, the embarkation was easy (expect delays disembarking), and the entertainment offered was fun. I've been on better cruises, but you get a bang for your buck here and if you keep that positive attitude you will be satisfied. Read Less

Because I had to cancel the Horizon ship cruise due to being hospitalized last year I booked Sunrise.Sunrise offered same itinerary on New York port embankment. In order not to lose my money I went back on this ship formerly Triumph. I didn't like this ship appearance in 2005 and I didn't like it after being refurbished in 2019. The crew was polite, the entertainment and food was great. But the design, appearance and 70% of the guest was undesirable. The buffet was overcrowded and you only had deck 5 that went straight from the back to the front. School opened the week I boarded making it almost children free. But the food lines we're long with many of the adults pushing and grabbing for food and seats. When they finished eating they remaining at the table playing cards and talking. Many times I had to take my food back to my room. The elevators were small and the scooter riders rolled over others getting on and off without an apology. If fewer people we're booked the cruise would have been a better experience. I have a mobility problem and I was constantly being run over by motorized scooters and able bodied runners. Sunrise is a small ship with big ship population. No relaxation anytime. Sunrise has a project environment in the Atlantic ocean. This was my second and last time with carnival. I do thank I Nyoman and the happy feet doctor(P) who sold me arch support and 30% of the passengers who Mastered the art of courtesy and good manners. Read Less

I never write reviews but felt inclined to after seeing so many negative reviews. This is my 4th cruise. I just came back from the 8 day Eastern Caribbean cruise - a cruise which I was a little concerned about because of so many poor reviews. I'm glad I don't always believe what I read. First, the ship is beautiful. Yes it's a smaller ship but at no time did I feel crowded. Never had a problem getting food - Pig n Anchor, grill, Mexican, raw bar etc.- never more than a few minute wait. Your Time Dining for dinner is great - download the app and request a table. The wait was never more than 10 minutes. Menu changed every night. We were very happy with all our choices. Yes the buffet could get busy but again it was never more than 10 minutes in line. The drink area does bottleneck and it was the only area that annoyed me but it was no big deal. Entertainment was varied and very good. The Acoustic Trio in the Red Frog Pub was our favorite. Mike the cruise director was hysterical and really got people involved but wasn't pushy. All ports of call were beautif - Amber Cove was our favorite. We didn't do any excursions because we just wanted sun sand and water. All in all you get a lot for your money. Embarkation was a breeze - disembarking is still a chore. Read Less

Introduction: This cruise was booked 16 months prior to sailing. While it is not our first cruise, it is the first with my daughter and her husband who had no previous cruise experience. I sprang the invitation to my daughter just 6 months before the cruise. To say they were excited is an understatement. We traveled to NYC by train the day before sailing, my wife and I from Boston and my daughter and son-n-law from Philadelphia. Embarkation: I have become quite disappointed with the embarkation and debarkation process on Carnival in Manhattan and this cruise was not an exception. Up until 2016 Priority Boarding for Platinum, Diamond and Suite guests we always had a VIP lounge and a separate boarding area. The process was fast, efficient and comfortable. No longer is this the case. The Platinum, Diamond and Suite guests no longer have a lounge, and are grouped together with Faster to the Fun and persons with disabilities. The Ship: When I was looking for a cruise for September it was exciting to see a different ship was coming to New York. For reasons some who have read my previous reviews are aware my wife and I limit our cruises to those out of New York and Boston. We had not sailed on the Triumph before its transformation to the Sunrise this year. I had actually booked the cruise before the change was even publicized. I prefer the ships under 110,000 so this met my entire criterion. The ship was clean which given it just went through a $200 million refurbishment should not come as a surprise. While it never, even breakfast at the Lido, seemed crowded it always felt compressed like they want to be all things to all people. Each venue seemed shrunk to fit. The two exceptions were Pixels and Serenity. Way too much space taken up with this money grabbing venue of which my wife took full advantage. We unfortunately were unable to find any seating at Serenity on the three times we attempted. Simply stated we are not early risers so we just went back to our wonderful balcony which I discuss next under Stateroom. I was a bit disappointed with the layout of the ship. Getting to the Limelight Lounge on Deck 4 with the Punch Liner Comedy is a bit complicated. You have to traverse the Radiance Dining Room or walk partially through the Casino on Deck 5 then take the elevator or stairs down to Deck 4. Rarely will you be able to enter through the back side next to the Sunshine Dining Room. Stateroom: I originally booked Grand Suites but about a month before the cruise when we were “visiting” the ship on-line my wife saw the Captain’s Suite. As the saying goes “Happy Wife, Happy Life” so I checked and miraculously there was one of the two Captain’s Suites available. My daughter and her husband were pleased with the Grand Suite but I can not give any details given I did not ever see the suite. As for the Captain’s Suite, it is a bit more than two people need, separate bathrooms…? really now! Lots of storage space, large televisions in the sitting room and bedroom, lots of electric outlets and USB outlets, huge balcony with a table and four chairs and two lounge chairs and a spectacular view out the front of the ship. The room is directly above the ship’s bridge so the view is as good as the Captain’s. My wife did find the bathtub while jetted was smaller than previous suites. Food: The food was fine in all the venues we visited with the exception of the lobster in the MDR and the Seafood Shack. My wife, who is a Maine lobster fanatic found them to be, in her words “slimy”. She did find the shrimp and chowder to be very good and I have the tab to prove it. Also we are not Sushi lovers, did not find time for the tacos at the Blue Iguana Cantina or Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse. I would be remiss to not mention Guy’s Burger Joint. My two previous experiences of biting into a piece of charcoal and then a leather belt will never be forgotten. Being the forgiving type and always giving a second chance, in this case third chance, I went for it. And glad I did. THIS was what I had wanted all along. Even though it was well done, it was still juicy and delicious. I really enjoyed this burger immensely. We did dine at Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Cucina del Capitano and both are well worth the additional fee. More of an observation rather than a criticism or complaint we have always left the dining room after eating satisfied. This time we felt stuffed. My daughter, who is not afraid of food, was unable to empty her plate on several occasions. It seems Carnival, possibly just this chef, has increased the portion sizes. Previously, we would order another entrée, go to another venue and get something more to eat, get a soft serve ice cream or simply wait till the late night dining at the Lido. None of that occurred on this cruise. Staff: The staff throughout the ship was wonderful. The bar/ lounge staff, the dining staff, room steward guest services, etc. If they ever knew our name, they would always greet us using our names. I’m not sure how they do it, sometimes I do not remember my own. Entertainment: Al Ernst is one of the funniest if not THE funniest guys I have seen on a cruise ship. Yeah, he doesn’t swear up a storm or look for ways to insult the audience or have a bunch of filthy stories to tell but he is one heck of a great comedian. Thank you, Al for two wonderful evenings of humor. The shows in the Liquid Lounge were enjoyable with very talented performers. We did find the Electric Violins in the Sunrise Lobby played a louder than we prefer thus did our drinking and socializing elsewhere. Ports/Excursions: We only left the ship at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic. We missed this Carnival private port on the Vista in 2016 due to strong winds. We rented an Ocean View Cabana which was very enjoyable. My daughter and son-in-law rode the zip line once and decided as much fun as it was, the trek back to the top really wasn’t worth it. The pool looked very inviting and there were plenty of chairs but I really enjoyed sitting and relaxing in the Cabana with an occasional hop into the water. Getting up the ladder out of the water is quite an ordeal. I suggest a couple more rungs on the ladder deeper in the water. Pretty tough on us older folk (I’m 72) and those who may be a bit on the hefty side. On the other port days we took advantage of the pool as the ship was vacated of passengers. Ah, maybe this is when we should have visited Serenity! No pool though. Debarkation: We were told to be in the Liquid Lounge at 8:15 A.M. to take advantage of Priority Debarkation. Not sure why we had to be there when we weren't allowed off until 9:30 A.M. No coffee, juice and pastry were available as has been the case on previous cruises. Had I known, we would have had a relaxing breakfast in the MDR and been the last people off the ship at 10:30. Conclusion: This certainly wasn’t our first rodeo with Carnival and God willing not our last. Overall the cruise was great with the exceptions of embarkation and debarkation. I hope to sail the Sunrise again and take advantage of the some of the other things it has to offer. While we have been on prettier ships, enjoyed better pampering and sailed for more days we are thankful the lord gave us the physical and financial ability to go on this cruise and will have memories that will stay with us the rest of our lives. We enjoyed cruising on the Pride. Leaving from Baltimore is a plus. Only a 30 minute drive from home. Check in was a breeze, they had a good system that was quick. Slowed down to take a picture for memories. Boarded ship nlt 1pm and room was ready by 2pm. Met our stateroom steward, Tegum. He kept our room tidy and requests handled in a timely manner. This was our fifth time on the Pride. Our first stop was to Guy's Burger and we were not disappointed. The burgers are juicy, the extras are plentiful and the fries are just as delicious. Menu in dining room was okay, but we did try the sushi bar (the boat for Two) was more than enough, especially with soup and salad and a drink. We celebrated my birthday and Teguh surprised me with discounts for Spa and tours. We had an obstructed view balcony. Dr E, the Cruise Director was very entertaining and the highlight of the cruise. Itinerary was changed due to Dorian. We stopped at Amber Cove. The port had a variety of stores, restaurants, activities and beaches. The people were very nice and the port offered free wifi. We look forward to returning to Amber Cove in the future. Read Less

We chose Carnival because it was budget friendly! It was my husband, myself and our 2 year old and 6 other family members. Went onto the ship with such hesitation as everyone seemed to have terrible things to say about Carnival and I can tell you none of them were true. Our steward Yoga was incredibly kind and thorough. The entertainment staff Adele and Lee made us feel like family and always at home and we were hugging them when we left the ship, they were fun, upbeat, kind and caring! The entertainment was phenomenal. The Cruise Director Mat was incredible, he has the best attitude and is so good at what he does as is everyone else. Cristian and Lauren who both do bar waiting we incredible they are such nice people and made us feel at home. But Tommy the head waiter in the Renoir Dining Room was absolutely incredible! When I say personable and kind I genuinely mean he made us feel so welcomed and we requested him every single night. We had a chaotic family of 9 and he and his team we wonderful. My daughter was looking for him every single day as we walked the ship and the last night she gave him a hug and we all took pictures. He knew every single one of us by name and I hope we get to see him and the others again next cruise, that goes for all the staff. Everyone from housekeeping to fun squad was great. By the end of the cruise we felt like a family on the ship! The only con is the added extras you pay for and they can get pricey but I would do it all over again.
