Very good time of year to go to the Mediterranean...starting at the end of August and ending in mid-September. Weather was perfect. Princess was the consummate host. We greatly enjoyed the food and the variety of ports we went to. The entertainment on board has gotten better and the service continues to be exceptional. I would recommend the itinerary we took to anyone looking to see a variety of different ports in the Mediterranean, at a fair and competitive price. The highlights of the cruise included Santorini, Montenegro, Barcellona, Florence and Rome, although there were at least 5 other ports. The quality of the food was quite good. We took advantage of the fine dining options twice and enjoyed the food and service immensely. We are seasoned travelers who keep coming back to Princess due to the loyalty rewards programs they offer, which are some of the best in the industry. Read Less

Booked obstructed view cabin on Emerald deck with free parking. Couple of new stops, Marseilles and Ajaccio in Corsica. Embarkation was very smooth, very quick and the parking with parking4cruises was a breeze. Got on board about 12.30 and had a very good lunch, then went to find the cabin. We noticed an awful sewage stench as we walked along Emerald Deck corridor, when we got into the cabin it was even worse, unbearably so. We went down to customer services, joined a long queue and reported the problem explaining we were not prepared to stay in a sewage stenching cabin. It was explained to us the cruise was full and no other cabins were available but they would try and rectify the problem. We returned the cabin and the lady in the next cabin was reporting similar problems to the steward who was explaining they were trying to do something about it, our cases had arrived but we didn’t really want to unpack them due to the awful smell in the room. We went up on deck, and then to muster drill where about 300 of us crammed into Sabatini’s and waited around 20 mins for the Captain to tell us that safety is the main priority. Ship then set sail for Barcelona. We then watched the Cup Final on the big screen outside. Nice touch by Princess putting the game on and coming round with pizza, hot dog and mini burgers. It was very cold out on deck, we managed to get a couple of movie under the stars blankets even though there was some rigmarole over signing for them or we would be charged and others around us weren’t allowed blankets as it wasn’t a movie. By this time I’d had a few Dos Equis’s and was engrossed in the game so wasn’t sure what all the fuss was over the blankets but several people were not happy we had blankets and they didn’t. We got back to the cabin and the smell had nearly gone, we had a message on the answerphone from Customer Services explaining they had changed the filters (whatever that means) and the smell would disappear which it did. Not the best start though, we promptly unpacked albeit 4 hours later than we would have liked. Depending on where you sunbathed the sewage smell returned throughout the cruise but never as bad as day 1 in our cabin. Princess need to sort this out when the ship is next in dry dock. We usually go anytime dining but when I booked the cruise I noticed in the Berlitz guide that this ship has the same profile as Golden, Grand and Star which we’ve sailed on before and really enjoyed. However as Caribbean Princess as an extra passenger deck there are 500 more passengers than its sister ships so we booked fixed dining 8.15. This turned out to be a good move as we heard many tales of woe about long wait times from fellow passengers who were on anytime. Food Started off okay, we sailed on Grand to Hawaii in February and the food was excellent throughout. On here first 3 days were good, especially the sit down lunches but once we hit the ports the standard of food and variety seemed to go downhill. So much so we decided to try Sabatini’s, had a really great meal although the service was very slow, booked 8.30 slot, starter arrived at 9.15 and didn’t leave until 10.50, couple on next table walked out due to slow service. Memorable meal nevertheless By day 9 we hadn’t met our Maitre D or restaurant Section manager but the evening meal was frankly lousy, 4 out of 6 were returned and we asked our waiter to send over the Maitre D who was “busy”. The following evening the Section Manager appeared, I explained to him the quality of the food on this cruise was nowhere near the standard previously experienced on other Princess ships. To be fair for the last 3 days we had some really good meals and no further problems. Buffet on the last sea day was the best I’ve ever seen on any cruiseship, just a pity quality and variety dipped so badly during days 4-9. Water in the buffer tasted like surgical spirit, couldn’t work out if it was the water or ice that was over chlorinated, so much so we got all our water from the outside bars. Service Room steward Clifton was excellent, did a wonderful job. Bar service was patchy, they had a couple of happy hours on the ship in specific locations between 3 & 4 Club Fusion in afternoon and 11-midnight in the nightclub. The bars were very busy and on 3 occasions I asked the waiters for drinks only to be told “I’m collecting glasses, use the bar”, “try another waiter I’m too busy”, “I’ll be back in a minute” never to be seen again. If you’re paying 15% service charge on drinks you should get better service than that, although in their defence the ship was full of brits and the staff were run off their feet. At the Captains Champagne evening a waitress from Crooners barged into my wife spilling a drink down her with no apology whatsoever. On final day went for a sit down breakfast at 7.05 (we had a 8.00am disembarkation slot). Took an hour to get a bowl of rice crispies and a couple of fried eggs so we didn’t manage to get off until 8.25. Sunbeds After first couple of days weather was brilliant and you had to be up early to bag the best sunbeds. In the daily patter it explained that unattended sunbeds after half an hour will have their belongings removed but I never saw this enforced. We always managed to get a couple of beds but there were many others who couldn’t find one despite the dozens of empty sunbeds with towels on. Smoking was allowed in the Casino so the Atrium and back of the theatre always smelled of stale tobacco. I guess cruiselines will eventually move into the 21st century and ban smoking indoors, the sooner the better. Ports of call Barcelona, always a favourite of ours. Caught the port bus €3 returnto Columbus statue. Walked down to the beach, up La Ramblas to La Boqueria market for a couple of Estrella Dams then down to the Gothic Cathedral. Ajaccio, had a wander round the town and main shopping streets, walking distance from ship. Civitavecchia, was in Rome in April so just had a mooch around the port and picked up a couple of bottles of Sambuka and had a very cheap bottle of Peroni in a locals bar Livorno took the shuttle into town and caught the train to Lucca, walked round the city wall, took just less than an hour not bad in 30 degree heat. Marseilles, visited Aix-En-Provence although because it was Sunday most of the shops were closed which was a bonus, had a look around the old port in Marseilles before returning from the ship. Gibralter, still a poor man’s Clacton-on-Sea although the duty free prices are a real bonus. Much better if the cruise had stopped in Malaga instead. Entertainment 4 singers and dancers shows, enjoyed Piano Man the best, couple of comedians, great pianist, couple of singers. Guy in crooners Tommy McPhee was excellent but we could never get a seat in there as the ship was so busy. Saw his show in Explorers, better venue for him. Movies under the stars, saw 3 films including The Second Exotic Marigold Hotel. Ace sat outside watching a movie munching popcorn Overall Had a good time weather was great and we enjoy the Princess brand and have another cruise booked with them on Coral in September. Would I cruise on this ship again, probably not, far too crowded for our liking, food not as good as other ships and overall service poorest we’ve experienced on 23 cruises. Read Less
