The Silversea expedition ship Silver Cloud may be old, but it’s totally modern, attractive and comfortable. My wife and I had a wonderful 34-day cruise in spring 2019 from Capetown to Lisbon, stopping at 17 places in western Africa. Our suite was great, as were the staff and the public areas. Food ranged from good to very good, sometimes excellent. There were shortcomings. Three scheduled ports were dropped before we left because of security issues. People booking this cruise in the future need to know they may not get all the ports they paid for. Also, not all the ship excursions were well-run and supervised. And the enrichment speakers could have been better. The Ship. Built in 1994 and heavily refurbished in 2017, the Cloud looks like a real ship. It’s almost perfectly maintained. Painters were frequently seen doing touch-ups, a sign of a well-run vessel. Suites have pleasant, usable balconies, two chairs, a sofa, a coffee table and a desk, and small but utilitarian bathrooms with a shower. Storage space was okay. We asked to have one chair removed, as it crowded the room and wasn’t needed, but the staff refused. Soundproofing between rooms was inadequate. Basic wifi was free and worked well most of the time. Air conditioning was okay. We had Room 622—a perfect location. The pool area had sufficient lounges, but one of the whirlpools was too cold and sometimes closed and complaints failed to correct the situation. The captain, Vincent Taillard, and the ship officers were cordial but standoffish. The social director, Moss Hills, was delightful. And quietly famous. Years ago, with another company, he helped lead the successful abandonment of a sinking cruise ship. The Food. We’re critical people, and we mostly enjoyed the meals. A few dishes seemed too edgy. The breakfast buffet could have used more variety. And, like seemingly all cruise ships, the Cloud featured awful frozen hash-brown potato patties. A reuben sandwich at lunch was terrible. How about some simple recognizable grilled sandwiches? Overall, we had good choices and found the food at least good and sometimes excellent. I had fillet mignon four times—really good each time. Wine and cocktails flowed freely. We enjoyed every glass of wine we drank, although we realize they don’t serve $40-a-bottle wine. Room service food was good. Waiters were good. The Restaurant, where you don’t need reservations, was the best. La Terrazza, which features Italian in the evening, lacked variety. The Grill, on the outdoor deck, features a grill-your-own meat on a hot volcanic rock. We went once. Never again. I guess some people like the concept. We don’t. Why not just have a good outdoor grill/barbecue? There is a specialty French restaurant that requires a steep extra charge. The Expedition. The Cloud fell short here. Admittedly the itinerary was ambitious, including places were many ships never go, in a difficult environment. We wanted to experience the sights and culture of west Africa first-hand. We did. Every port offered a least one shore excursion covered by the ship fare. Some were great. Some were okay. Some sadly lacking. Some didn’t deliver what was promised when we reserved. Guides were sometimes poor. Supervision from the ship expedition staff was too-frequently lacking. The expedition leader, Nicki D’Souza, was not up to the task. Silversea needs to hire people from Tauck to demonstrate how to run tours. We had one great speaker—a former top assistant to Nelson Mandela. But where were the black professors, journalists or politicians from west Africa? Not on our ship. Conclusion. We’re not sure we’d book the cruise again. It’s really expensive. The missed ports and the shaky shore excursions were irritating. We could and should have gotten more for our money. But we accomplished a lot of our goals and we learned and we had fun. Read Less

Due to the delay we only embarked on 26Jan 2019 sadly missing two days of fun we were looking forward to..nevertheless once on board we were in awe of the beauty & magnitude of the ship & then the fun started. We loved the various lounges & bar areas for relaxation & good music. The dining sittings in the restaurant caters for everyones needs & the staff serving guests with a smile & then having the opportunity to meet wonderful people at the table we share with.Our highlight the sushi restaurant (my favourite). Our balcony cabin for two very spacious & clean..the staff (& that includes everyone) very friendly & helpful at all times & they work long hours daily. Its also fantastic on the pool deck soaking up the sun & having fun with activities organised by the entertainment team.Its your lucky day if you win something.The shows in the theatre outstanding!!!Professionalism beyond words! The cruise overall is too much to see & do & theres too little time..definitely another cruise planned for the future.. Read Less

Third time on Oceania, first time on the R-Class Nautica. Had a great time on this 30-day cruise up the east coast of Africa and then Asia seeing some out of the way places but meeting some great people onboard. The biggest detractor on this cruise was time and how long it takes to get from point A to point B. Itinerary Planning - This is a shared responsibility between Oceania Corporate and the Captain of the ship. These itinerary’s are made years in advance and must be executed by the Captain at the helm. Durban - 3 hours late, Maldives - 5 hours late, Phuket - 5 hours late - Unacceptable. The reason given, currents were bad or wind was high. This tired ship can only do about 18,5 knots, we didn’t have high seas or storms to contend with, this was an example of poor planning and not having enough time reserve between ports of call. The skip of Mombasa for terrorist threat is understandable but could have been communicated sooner, the add of Praslin in the Seychelles deserves an “At a boy”. Ship - Loved the size of the ship and the old world charm but its time for an upgrade. The common areas were in good shape and are still receiving the TLC they deserve. Would like to see Toscana and Polo combined to make room for Red Ginger with the scheduled refurbishment. The Nautica Lounge has a nice layout to it but when the entertainment uses the dance floor instead of the stage it can be difficult to see what is going on. Didn’t see a lot of activity in the casino, this space could get better utilization. Enjoyed the spa deck on the front, a quiet space for reading, and the hot tub there was great. Dining - Ate in all the venues and service level was top notch. This was really evident in the Terrace Grill. During the morning rush there were countless “Good Mornings”, tables were reset quickly, and beverage servers ever present. Enjoyed the regional specialty nights especially the game night of Kudu, Springbock, Crocodile, and Impala. For the GDR did not experience the same quality as previous sailings, the deserts were routine. Saw the same menus in Toscana and Polo as year prior, shouldn’t these change a bit. Entertainment and Activities - You can’t expect the same performance level that is received on a 2500+ passenger ship. With that said this group or entertainers and dancers held there own and then some. You got to know these performers throughout the 30-day cruise as they were the ones hosting the various activity games onboard. I think you will see Paulina and Luke have their own headline acts soon. John’s comedy/magic show should become a regular act. He was pretty darn good at having fun at the daily trivia forum. Was glad to see bridge lessons being offered as corporate had said they wouldn’t prior to the cruise. Bridge should be expected on a cruise of this duration. The string quartet every evening in the atrium was well received and glad to see them get two headline shows. The off-board entertainers and lecturers were pretty good. Ports and Shore Excursions - Took this cruise mainly for the itinerary and was not disappointed. Arranged mostly private tours with the CC forum prior to embarkation. These were well done and received a more intimate experience than the Oceania sponsored trips. The tendering process was orderly with a sensitivity to private excursions. Oceania needs to cut their fees in half to be competitive. Met some interesting fellow travelers from various points of the world. By sharing evening dinner or Happy Hour you get to exchange in some great conversations. We enjoy Oceania and will return. Read Less

My husband & I chose this trip so he could take some CE and do a safari!. We booked the pre-cruise safari at Lion Sands River Lodge. While Oceania did not really do a good job with communicating our hotel info or flight info to the bush, it all worked out & the Lodge was amazing! We had 4 game drives and 1 bush walk. Pre-Safari, we booked a night at the Residence Boutique Hotel. The Residence is a beautiful, intimate hotel that used to be the Chinese Embassy. It is in a gated compound, very safe. They arranged for their driver to pick us us from the airport, gave us a driving tour of Johannesburg the next day, and delivered us safely to 54th of Bath Hotel booked by Oceania. 54th on Bath is a very nice hotel basic. I think it is part of the Omni Group. Breakfast was included and we all had omelettes. There were 8 from the Nautica going on Safari. Flight was quick and soon we were on our way to Lion Sands. Our time there was the highlight of our trip! We wished it was longer. Soon we were on a flight to Cape Town. we did not have time to see any of CapeTown precruise. We sailed roughly 1 hour after boarding. We were tired! We were in a "penthouse" cabin 8065. It was of course very small compared to the Marina penthouse cabins. I wanted to upgrade all along but the reasonable price upgrade was not offered until we were on safari & my travel agent said it was gone within minutes. Our butler, Vinod was a Gem! He helped with some dining problems and was just overall the best we have ever had. The food was very good in the main dining. My favorite thing was in Toscana, the Carbonara, but you have to eat it quickly because it seems to harden up. We had to request escargot in the MD. It was perfect. The escargot in Polo is soupy and neither of us cared for it. I not sure when it asks about excursions, aside from the Pre-Cruise safari, we booked everything privately because I do not like tour buses or large groups. If you do this cruise and you feel the same consider booking something through the ship while in East London (a place I will be blocking from my memory soon). We booked through Kevin Agram. We did not have him as our driver. Our driver knew nothing and insisted on taking us to the "townships" for 2 hours and then segregated beaches! It was the lowlight of our trip, having already seen them in every town we visited in South Africa. We did do great excursion through Red Dunes safari in Namibia, but if you want to see seals, book a catamaran tour. I heard they jump right on the boat! Richard's Bay & Durban we used Trinity Tours, Brian High. We went to several game reserves and same things as the ship but cheaper and we had a lovely dinner at the Oyster Box Hotel in Durban - don't miss the curry bar. Also do not eat Curry unless you at the Pot & Kettle in the Valley of a Thousand Hills. Very good wine at Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc. $7 per bottle! In Mossel Bay, we used Tours for South Africa and went to Botlierskop Game Reserve (same as the ship) but much cheaper and included lunch. In Port Elizabeth, we used Afroventures Tours and had a wonderful day safari where we actually saw 3 lions!! When we came back to Cape Town we had a day tour to Stellenbosch to taste wines. It was late get started because of immigration problems or something. So we only got to see 1winery (Waterford - Excellent) and then we had dinner at the Wijnhose. I kept saying the winehouse & no one understood me! Excellent food and flights of wine. I would definitely go back to Stellenbosch. Read Less

Cabin and Sailing We both really enjoy sailing with Seabourn, however it must be said that we are starting to see a few cracks in the wall apart from the service which continues in our mind to be 110% Subsequent to our 2017 sailing in Alaska with the mini refit in December we were rather disappointed. The pool deck after we were advised had been replaced remained faulty and was at one time cordoned off. Dining wise, we found that although there was ashore, an abundant supply of salad vegetables, the buffet did not always reflect this. The main dining room experience was not that of a calmly run restaurant but one where all the waiters where walking at top speed all the time.That said the new Thomas Keller Dining experience was first class. We also noticed that on a considerable no. of times the guest services telephone just kept on ringing, one time in excess of 4 mins. Look all these things are not big deal but just drag down the whole perceived ambience and sailing experience with Seabourn. Lets hope our May sailing with Ovation provides for a better experience, at least the cabins should be top notch. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we have already sailed on the Oceania line (Riviera). An added bonus was the fact that the departure port was in our home city of Cape Town. We also wanted a longer cruise and 30 days was wonderful. The Nautica was an ideal size with only about 600 passengers and there was never any inconvenience when trying to dine in any of the restaurants. The food was really good and varied and I never heard any complaints from any other diners. We had a change in Executive Chef mid way through the cruise and I have to say that, whilst the previous Exec Chef was great, we noticed an added standard of excellence when Chef Gary Potiphar took over. Compliments to all of the staff involved for the most amazing Christmas decorations. They were beautiful. The Xmas and New Year festivities were totally celebrated and there was a lovely spirit of friendship and goodwill all over. The Cruise Director, Ray Carr, was outstanding. A man with a great sense of humour and a very good rapport with his staff. We didn't attend any of the evening shows but those who did said they were very good. The ports along the coast of Africa were 'ok'. I feel that Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay, and Richards Bay could have been avoided altogether and more time spent possibly in the Seychelles. A pity we had to miss Madagascar due to the plague there. We were notified of this well in advance of sailing and it crossed my mind that we could possibly have taken in Mauritius instead of having the couple of extra sea days. We took none of the ships' tours as they are vastly overpriced. Mainly we took advantage of Tours by Locals. We would certainly travel on the Nautica again were we to find an itinerary that suits us. This was a destination specific cruise. Lecturer Mike Boll was fabulous giving histories of the countries visited. All nationalities were onboard which was a great mix. Entertainment was average & the so called "pool deck party" was a real disappointment - lacked food, poor music selection & no ambience or time given in setup. NCL takeover of Oceania is evident...cost cutting....toiletries not replaced in concierge room & had to be requested, room not serviced appropriately upon embarkation & wine prices (+18% gratuity!) expensive, wait service thin. The Horizon room was empty usually by 9:30-10 pm! Shore excursions were overpriced as usual. Food was above average, particularly in the specialty restaurants. The whirlpool private area available to concierge & above staterooms lacked lounges & chairs for those wanting to visit, & were taken by the same people regularly, as were the lack, & hogging, of lounges on deck 5. Concierge rooms are not worth the extra money on the smaller Renaissance class ships. The cruise director was corporate in presentation & too formal, & lacked the necessary social interaction for all levels of clientele. The most appealing aspect of the cruise was that staff recognised returning passengers & were very friendly & obliging. Read Less

It is almost as if we were in a different universe than the "Not what I paid for" cruiser. We are frequent Oceania cruisers and found the food and the service on Insignia very good. Yes, we were unhappy about the "deals" since we had booked early and paid top dollar. But as the deals were announced our agent went to bat for us and we did get some compensation in the form of ship credit. There were no production shows but there were many guest entertainers who were on board for a brief stay. This provided for diverse programs which we felt were better quality than the cruises where there was an in house team of entertainers. The orchestra was excellent and there was dancing in Horizons every evening before dinner as well as before the show in the Insignia lounge. West Africa is probably not for first time cruisers, but we found the ports interesting and we learned a lot about the history and cultures of the region. Two improvements over our previous Oceania cruises: we found the destination staff to be extremely helpful to those not using the ship excursions and the lecturers, especially Dr. John Freedman, were excellent. This was our first time on Cunard. We embarked the QM2 in Cape Town which was shambles due to large number os people embarking and a colour blind co-ordinator. We were offered tea, coffee & biscuits but some lunch would have been nice, even if only a sandwich. The ship itself is a bit tired but everything was clean and nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were cheerful, helpful and polite. There was so much to do on this ship. Shows, talks, concerts, quizes, games, instruction classes, library, spa etc etc. We were not bored! Even with all the choices of food I did find some of the meals unpleasant. Horrible gravy like sauces on beautiful pieces of cooked fish, or meat, which I think should have been served separately. Even the vegetables were soaked in this gravy sauce. Good vegetable dishes were very lacking all round. I do think the QM2 could do a lot better. The Spa area was very good but ridiculously expensive. I once visited the hair salon for a blow dry and was given the third degree about the condition of my hair and what product I use which was completley unnecessary and stopped my going again. Sadly we also caught colds but managed to shake it off but were left with the Cunard cough which did linger even after returning home. Our ports of call were Walvis Bay, Gran Canaria and Madeira. We did a tour of the Namibian desert and dunes in Walvis Bay. In Gran Canraria we took the two-stop bus vsiting Maspalomas and Puerto Mogan. In Madeira we took the shuttle bus to Funchal and spent time exploring on our own. I realise that the QM2 likes to call itself a liner rather than a cruise ship but it was a cruise. Overall we had a nice time and it was certainly an experience. Would I go on Cunard again? No, mainly because of the standard of food and because there are better cruise liners offering the same but better. Read Less

What sold us on this cruise: The two features that sold us on this cruise was the itinerary and the all visas would be included. Getting visas to some of the more exotic places is a real challenge, so having that as part of the trip's inclusivity was great. Besides that, being on a grand voyage we'd also get almost all the perks the top tiers of Seven Seas Society members get including my favorite: free laundry and dry cleaning. I can't say this is typical on Regent, but it was a great differentiator on this trip. Embarkation: Upon embarkation we had a bit of a rough start, I have to assume because port authorities in Cape Town did not allow Regent personnel to help with embarkation. The impression was terrible. We got herded into a tent, with no one telling us what to do, I deduced that we had to sign a statement that we didn’t have Ebola and then “optionally” put some of our luggage through a bag x-ray. There didn't seem to be much enforcement so who knows what the purpose of lugging our bags around was anyway. To use an analogy: this was like being invited to a grand ball and arriving in our finest having to wade through raw sewage to get to the front door of the palace, and then trying to forget all that with a glass of champagne. First impressions: The first thing my wife noticed while first walking through the ship was the lack of flowers. During past cruises there were a lot more plants and orchids in our room, rest rooms etc. The new décor was interesting, I suppose the trend is to move away from wood grain (I personally love wood grain and the old style of the explorer lounge). My wife noticed that the lighting outside the Horizon lounge in the bar area was very bright, perhaps it needs a dimmer? Otherwise it might serve a very good place for the security officer to perform interrogations :) I also noticed that there were no pens in our cabin, most likely an oversight that we did rectify through our steward. Speaking of housekeeping, now even standard cabins have both a steward and stewardess as a team which is an excellent idea. It solves getting your cabin cleaned quickly and efficiently and solves almost all issues regarding cabin needs. We have sailed on Regent more than any other line and can't help comparing the current cruise with our past ones. Ever since our first cruise it seems more and more obvious how the company has been applying cost savings and cost control measures. Having been in the corporate world myself, I can certainly understand it from the corporate and investor side however, the risk is to make sure your customers can’t tell the difference, otherwise you are on the very bad trajectory of the airlines. I haven’t met anyone in recent times that ever says airline travel is a joy. I'm sorry to say that on each new Regent Cruise, the accounting side of the company seems to shine, and repeat passengers tend to be left wanting. I realize it is very difficult to maintain the level of luxury and "features" that existed in the past while still making money, but it is sad if it can't be done. To be fair to new Regent cruisers, I don't think what we're referring to as lacking would even be noticed since as a new passenger you're evaluating the cruise as is, and not comparing to something else. Don't shy away from Regent because of this. Regent is still an excellent cruise line, it just isn't as good as Raddison used to be. Entertainment: On the entertainment/lecture side, it seems we experienced a watered down version of what we used to have. On this cruise, aside from the destinations loop on TV there were no destination lecturers which really diminishes the ultimate experience one could have in visiting new places. While the handouts etc. are fine, having an experienced traveler on board who can give you tips on where to go, what to see, the history etc. is really important. I had heard a rumor that the destination lecturers had their stipends eliminated by Regent which, if true is a pretty short-sighted way of cost controlling. I am aware of the new partnership with the Smithsonian, but that didn't help us on this cruise. While the on-board entertainment has been good, its still a “lite” version of what we use to get. In past cruises, especially trans-oceanic, we’d have the destination lecturers, special interest lecturers and possibly up to two celebrity speakers such as Terry Waite or a former Apollo Astronaut. On this cruise we have a very good aviation historian who I enjoyed – but he was not essential to the itinerary we were on, and a very nice cook book author who I’m afraid was misplaced. She should be doing cooking lessons in the Horizon lounge with small group not a show and tell in the theater. I was surprised there wasn’t an astronomer on board as we’ve had on previous cruises to help us enjoy the unique experience of viewing the night sky in the middle of the ocean. Needless to say with such a small group of speakers we couldn't have Liar’s Club or other game shows since there just were'n't enough lectures/entertainers on at one time to do that. We had Name that Tune on some evenings which was good but we used to have all sorts of other games after the show in the evening. Fortunately Teatime Trivia was very popular and fun. On the positive side our cruise director Jaime Logan and his wife Dana along with the singers and dancers were top notch. To us they made all the difference and salvaged our entertainment experience. We found all of them very approachable, and the shows were absolutely fantastic. Some shows were repeated in our second segment, but we enjoyed them as an encore. All these people work tirelessly to put on a great show 24/7 and make our cruise stand out. Bravo to all of them! On our second segment we had an excellent author and historian to help us enjoy the ports of southeast Asia. What a shame she did not get on in Cape Town. I have never sailed on Oceania, but I have talked to other frequent cruises who have sailed on both and the consensus is that Regent is a pre-paid pre-packaged version of Oceania now, rather than a true luxury “whatever satisfies the customer” line that it used to be. Kudos goes to all the onboard staff, who despite having one hand tied behind their back by corporate rules still manage to make our voyage wonderful. Read Less

We have cruised fairly extensively for nearly 20 years but this was the smallest ship we have experienced. We arranged our own travel to Capetown as Silversea had used up all their "block" before we booked. We stayed one night at the Table Bay Hotel and would recommend it very happily. Embarcation was a very simple matter - taxi from the hotel - 5 minutes to the ship and abouit another 5 minutes to board and have photos taken etc. Our cabin (suite)was very clean and tidy - the only downside was the rather small bathroom. Our butler fixed us up with toiletries and, more importantly, stocked the bar with our requirements. No champagne! We thought it must have been an oversight but it seems there was no champagne on board - we certainly did not receive any. Our balcony was a bit tight and showed signs of wear and tear. The staff on the ship were excellent and many remembered our name. The entertainers tried hard but it would be unreasonable to expect top class entertainment on such a small ship. Dining,of course, is very important on any cruise and we really liked the main Dining Room. La Terrazza was up and down a bit - we had dinner twice there - once was very poor the other very much better. Hot Rocks was good fun and most enjoyable. The big disappointment was Le Champagne - we went once and had the North American Dinner. The main course was prime rib which was exactly the same as we had eaten in the MDR the evening before - not fine dining, in our opinion. We cancelled our second booking and noticed that Le Champagne had 0 customers on several nights and only 2 or 4 on others. It certainly was not worth the $130 which we paid. A rethink by Silversea is overdue. We took two ships tours - one in to the desert in Namibia which was first class and one in The Gambia which was awful. Both tours were grossly overpriced. The shuttle buses which were laid on at all the ports were very good - some even had local guides to give a commentary on the way in to town.The tender experience at Porto Novo was a bit lively to say the least! It was so rough that the Captain had to suspend the service for a while. the passengers were (nearly) all good fun and good company. The makeup was UK76 US44 Europe54 Canada10 Australia12 other 5 so the ship was about 2/3 full which made for a very comfortable cruise. We have now had 3 cruises on Silversea - would we go again? Yes - but probably not on Silver Wind or Cloud as we prefer a larger ship. Read Less

As previous Silversea cruisers, we were very excited to be joining the Silver Wind on February 2nd out of Cape Town after our private 10 day safari in Namibia and short stay in at a great new modern boutique hotel-- Harbour Bridge Hotel and Suites in Cape Town. Try and visit Namibia before it changes. Namibia has some of the most diverse landscapes in Africa. Dunes 1000 feet tall, game parks, dramatic coastlines, shipwrecks, etc.. . Plus try and save your money to do a private safari. There is nothing like the feeling of telling your guide, that you need a few more perfect shots of that rhino in Etosha game park and not worry about offending someone else in your group. Well maybe, my husband got a little tired of my 2000-3000 pictures taken in the month we were in Africa. ----And our guide called me, Mrs.Spielberg on the next to last day of our trip. What the heck! Doesn't everyone carry 5 cameras/camcorders? We took a great all day excursion with Rob of the Cape Convoys Tours in Cape Town, plus the next morning he took me at no charge (my dear husband slept in) with others up to get the cable car up Table Mountain. We hadn't been able to go there because of the clouds, which covered Table Mountain for about 10 days. After we came down, the line to get up the mountain was 3 hours long. Well enough about the pre-cruise experiences, we got on the Wind and were shown our suite along with our room attendant and butler (female). Believe it or not, our butler got seasick---thought that was cute, plus she was new and it showed with service issues. Things happen. Did that dampen our cruise--heck, no. Never had a bad cruise, just some better, than others. I wish I cared about drinking more, but alas I told the butler to load the refrigerator with fruit juices. You can have anything within reason ie. Grey Goose, champagne, Scotch, wines, etc. all okay. The food was good, but not as memorable as our last Silversea cruise on the Shadow. The size of the Wind is great with just under 300 passengers. We lost one port due to high winds and waves, but since it was our last one before the disembarking port, that was okay. No one wants to tender in 12 ft seas, besides we had a great "dolphin safari" after we left the port area. Would we go on another Silversea cruise---sure, but only if it is discounted and has a really interesting itinerary.
